Altera (アルテラ, Arutera?), Class Name Saber (セイバー, Seibā?), is a Saber-class Servant summoned by Ritsuka Fujimaru in the Grand Orders of Fate/Grand Order.

Profile[]

Identity[]

Better known in history as Attila the HunWP (アッティラ・ザ・フンWP, Attira za Fun?). She was the overlord who established a great empire in the 5th CenturyWP. She was a warrior and king of the Huns, a tribe descending from the XiongnuWP (HunniWP). Leading an army on horseback, the conquests of this great hero covered a great part of the map, controlling a vast territory spanning from Western Asia to Russia, Eastern Europe and even GaulWP. It can be said that she invited the eventual collapse of the Roman EmpireWP.[1][2][3]Throughout her life, Altera was always in the midst of battle. Due to the terrifying acts she commited in war, she was greatly feared in all European nations as the Scourge of God (神の鞭, Kami no Muchi?, Whip of God) and the Divine Punishment (神の懲罰, Kami no Chōbatsu?).[1][2] She is a pure King of Combat (戦闘王, Sentō-Ō?).[1][3]

Attila the Hun is known as EtzelWP in the Nibelungenlied. Etzel's previous wife passed away and she later married Kriemhild, who handled the ruling court. Kriemhild merely used the king for the sake of her revenge against her previous husband Siegfried's killers. Altera barely remembers her, as at the time Altera was like a machine focused on destruction.[4] Attila is also known as King Atli in the "Völsunga saga", "GuðrúnarkviðaWP" and "Sigurðarkviða hin skammaWP" from the Elder EddaWP, etc.[5]

In actuality, however, Altera is not related to the Huns at all. She was discovered within the dark ruins of a civilization from thousands of years ago by the Hun elders, with the tattoos of combat on her body and the Photon Ray in her hand. After she killed an armed man, the elders began to regard her as "destruction" itself, and she went on to destroy civilizations as her instincts dictated.[3][6]

History[]

FGO Altera scene

Altera was an avatar of destruction. An engine of war that scythed down the many lives who had stood in her path. That was how she had been made to be… or so what the elders of the Huns had said to her. That she, Altera, existed for battle. That she had no father, no mother. That she had been “discovered” by the Huns, descendants of the Xiongnu people. Yes, she had no memories of parents, nor of friends, nor of a family. Instead, the world was filled with enemies. As shown by the marks of war carved into her flesh from the beginning, she lived only to fight. It was her born nature and her role. It was her purpose to exercise her capabilities as intended, and she never held any doubt on the matter.[1]

Becoming destruction itself, Altera fought like a raging tempest, king of the Huns yet not one of them. It barely even registered to her that she had armies at her back as she swung her sword with a single mind. "Destruction. Domination. Invasion." She could not be sated, even as the lands of the Huns grew beyond their ability to control. She merely swung her sword and continued the slaughter.[1]

In contrast with her martial achievements, Altera did not succeed politically, and her empire rapidly fell apart and dissolved after her death.[1][2] Even in the moment when death came to her, she recalled—as she laid in a pool of her own blood, she had thought only of ways to fell Rome.[1] However, the awe and dread infused in the name “Attila” remains in the memories of people to this day.[1][2] History had even forgotten that she was a woman.[1]

Appearance[]

Altera is a beautiful tan-skinned girl with red eyes and white, veil-like hair under her actual white veil. Her body is carved with the white marks of war and tattoos of combat as the Crest of the Star.

Personality[]

In truth, Altera dislikes her more common name of “Attila”. She does not dislike its meaning – ‘father’ or ‘controller’ – but rather its sound, and is somewhat more attached to the German “Etzel”. She calls herself “Altera” and wishes to be known as such, but it is difficult to have her explain the reason. Only to the very small number of people she trusts will she quietly disclose the truth – because "Attila" does not sound charming or sweet.[1][4]

With her excellent instincts, Altera can deal with even the most drastic of circumstances without abandoning her reason – a proud and logical fighter. However, there is a sort of ’emptiness’ about her.[1][2] Although she lacked emotions while she was alive, Altera gained the ability to feel when she was summoned as a Servant. However, she feels uncomfortable with emotions because she doesn't know how to express them.[7]

Regardless of friend or foe, Altera has some magnanimity for those warriors whose skill (performance) she has acknowledged, but those who stand against her are treated as only obstructions to be removed, and she is fundamentally merciless. There is no hesitation in her blade.[1] In battle, she can coolly and correctly grasp the situation, becoming a merciless killing machine.[1][2] She has an innate compulsion to destroy, of which she describes it as being even greater than that of a Command Spell's.[4] In truth, this is because she is the Cerebral Corpus of Velber 02; her connection to the White Titan has been disrupted due to the destruction of Velber 02's Earth-based body, but lingering memories of her former existence remain in her mind even if she cannot make sense of them.

Although she recognizes combat as where she is truly in her element, Altera personally does not like it. She fights because she is a fighter. In the name of the violent and unchained God of War, she kills all who stands in her way and destroys all ‘civilization’ before her, nothing more; that being said, she has since gained a slight amount of nuance and only actively destroys what she deems "bad civilization". She is unused and inexperienced in matters outside of war and combat.[1] Altera was born with a fondness for the God of War, Mars (Ares).[1][2] She would call him “Marc”, though she did not enforce this on others. It was just something she preferred.[1]

Altera treats her Master stoically, recognizing them as a general or adviser-like figure, and will generally go along with anything they say with an “I see.” This relationship significantly infuences her, with Altera being closer to a fighting machine on the battlefield that fully relies on an external software (the Master) to process thoughts.[1]

Having become a Heroic Spirit and taken form as a Servant, Altera began silently questioning herself. Had she perhaps been too much of a warrior? What if she had not become the embodiment of destruction itself? What if she never gripped the Sword of the War God?[1]

She had been feared by Europe as the punishment brought down by their absolute deity, the very Whip of God Himself. She had been a fighting machine. What life could she have lived, if not as a warrior?[1]

What would she have spent her time on? Would she have been a traveler, freely circling the world on the back of her horse? Would she have been a grower of life, tilling the earth as she had seen the people of Europe done? Would she be baking bread in a smoldering oven? Hunting birds and beasts in the wild? Would she be learning words and language, and writing it down in books? Would she, with reddened cheeks and a gentle smile, have pressed herself into the breast of another?[1]

She did not know. But she wondered…[1]

Altera wants to destroy the Holy Grail, but if she were to have a wish for it, her wish would be "I want to try living a life other than that of a warrior." She does not despise the life that she spent fighting, but she is interested to find out how she would have lived otherwise.[1][2] "Just, if I were not a warrior, what sort of life would I lead." She holds such a curiosity.[2]

Role[]

Fate/Grand Order[]

The Altera in Fate/Grand Order is the Heroic Spirit form of the Titan Altera. Although the Altera of Fate/Grand Order is no longer connected to the titan version of herself, she recalls traces of that connection, which she considers memories of a previous life that she can’t quite grasp. But a vestige of her old self’s power is still buried in the depths of her core...[3]

Second Singularity: Septem[]

Altera is summoned by Lev Lainur Flauros after his defeat by Chaldea and Nero Claudius. Although his Holy Grail should have ensured absolute obedience, she immediately dispatches him and absorbs the Grail before advancing towards Rome.[10] Chaldea and Nero manage to stop her before she destroys it, and Altera disappears, content knowing that there are things in the world that even she cannot destroy.[11]

Do Moon Goddesses Dream of Dango?[]

Hiding inside the bag of dumplings as she eats them, Altera is eventually discovered by Artemis when Mash tries to take the bag back to Chaldea. Cutting the bag along with Caligula when he looks inside the bag, she emerges from the bag to the shock of Artemis. Curious about Artemis’s surprise at her appearance, Altera states she appears wherever there is civilization. Rejecting Artemis’s notion that she destroys anything as a misunderstanding, Altera states she realized that there are good and bad civilizations, with dumplings being good and Moon Festival being bad. Deciding that she’ll take the dumplings, and destroy the group for having Moon Festivals, she fights them. After being defeated by the group, Altera comments the dumplings were good, and wonders when her Noble Phantasm will attain its true power before disappearing.

Final Singularity: Solomon[]

Altera is amongst the "Septem" Singularity Servants to aid Chaldea against the Demon Gods Pillars.[12]

Event: All the Statesmen![]

Summoned by the Nameless Master, Altera first confronts Ritsuka's party after Paul Bunyan chopped down an entire forest. Calling herself Wyatt Earp, she and Billy the Kid have come to punish the group for illegal deforestation. Bunyan insists she was going to ship out the lumber so the wood doesn't go to waste, but Altera still decides to punish her. The group forces her to retreat. She flies east towards Chicago.

Ritsuka's party encounters her again while they're eating hamburger steak. She now calls herself Buffalo Bill, but she miscounts the number of weapons she has in her introduction. She leaves and comes back, only to repeat her mistake. Frustrated, she tries to redo her intro again, but Ritsuka tells her she doesn't have to. Altera agrees and declares the group will be punished for killing the endangered buffalo, ignoring Geronimo's statement that the herd was berserk and not one part was wasted. She is forced to retreat, warning the group not to go any further.

She is encountered once again at the Columbian Exposition with Nikola Tesla, calling herself Davy Crockett this time. She sends Thomas Edison into a rage by calling DC bad civilization, triggering a fight. After Tesla disappears, Altera leaves, warning Ritsuka and Bunya they'll encounter their worst nightmare if they go any further.

Another Altera is later used as the vessel of Goddess Columbia. She disappears after Columbia is defeated.

Yet another Altera appears when Bunyan's decreasing perception of Ritsuka's party threatens their existence. Like them, she wants to help Bunyan, even though she knows Bunyan is a danger to the world. But she believes that the act of resisting in itself should be a great civilization. Then, contracting with Ritsuka, she destroys Bunyan's Grail with Teardrop Photon Ray.

Christmas Event: Merry Christmas from the Underworld[]

When Chaldea is assailed by Sumerian Fever, Altera is the only one unaffected thanks to her Natural Body Skill and her resistance to the planet's mythology. She then met Dumuzid, who convinces her that Chaldea is being attacked because Kur isn't getting any Christmas presents. He asks her to help him appease Ereshkigal's anger. She agrees to help, and Dumuzid grants her his Authority to make her Santa Claus. He then told her to deliver a present at Kur's lowest level.[13]

Altera saves Ritsuka from Gallû Spirits after Gilgamesh transported them to Kur. After destroying the spirits, she tells Ritsuka to grab onto her sheep when she notices their free fall is rather slow. She asks them to guide her as they did with the previous Santas. She believes their goal to descend into Kur and her goal to deliver presents are aligned. Their destination is the bottom-most level of Kur, the Abyss.[14]

Descending to the first gate, Ritsuka is confused about the Christmas decorations, so Altera reads a letter to explain. According to it, Christmas has come to Kur because it is merging with Chaldea’s accumulated knowledge for unspecified reasons. Due to Ereshkigal breaking her oath, time and space in Kur have become disrupted. Chaldea was blamed for this, so the Sumerian Fever was unleashed to destroy it. During this time, Kur is deep and narrow instead of wide and shallow. The seven gates are now the seven layers, and beyond its seventh layer is the Abyss. There lies Kur’s temple, where Ereshkigal resides. Until she is defeated, Chaldea will continue to suffer.[14]

Altera and Ritsuka soon reach the first gate, confronted by its gatekeeper, Medusa. Medusa refuses to let them pass since neither is technically dead yet. To pass, they need to either die by her hands or give her a present. Altera fights her to see if she’s worthy of a present. Afterward, she gives her a Craft Essence featuring Shinji Matou, only for Medusa to cut it down. She then gives a more comical one featuring Shinji, which Medusa reluctantly accepts and opens the gate. Medusa warns the other gatekeepers won’t be kind as her and believes Altera doesn’t yet know how to be Santa. After Medusa ascends, Altera and Ritsuka pass through the first gate.[15]

As they descend towards the second gate, Altera tells Ritsuka how she became Santa. Ritsuka tells her that Dumuzid tricked her, but she refuses to believe it. The pair soon reach the second gate and meet its gatekeeper, Angra Mainyu. He immediately demands a present from her and claims to be another Santa that delivers cheap garbage. After Altera defeats him in a fight, he grabs two presents for himself from her sack. She scolds him for his greed, but he says children waiting for Santa's presents are greedy. Santa himself is also greedy for delivering presents to those who don't even believe him. The gate then opens, and Angra Mainyu hints Quetzalcoatl is the next gatekeeper. Altera and Ritsuka pass through the gate.[13]

The pair reaches the third gate to find it already open and its gatekeeper gone. Ereshkigal appears and reveals she banished Quetzalcoatl for being an outsider and a goddess of Venus. She then reveals she is currently conducting a ritual to hand over her Authority in the Abyss. Altera is surprised she could defeat Quetzalcoatl, to which Ereshkigal explains everyone’s powers are rendered useless in Kur. Ereshkigal then blasts Altera with red lightning, only for it to be ineffective. Altera tells her that Ritsuka wants her to stop Kur’s attack on Chaldea, otherwise, it’ll be destroyed by tomorrow and Christmas won’t be celebrated. However, Ereshkigal flies into a rage upon hearing they’re from Chaldea, forcing Altera and Ritsuka to fight her. Altera implores Ritsuka to retreat to the second gate, but Ereshkigal refuses to let them escape. An evil spirit appears however and implores her to return to the Abyss. It warns Kur will disappear if she isn’t present when the ritual is conducted. Ereshkigal tells Ritsuka and Altera to return to Chaldea, but Altera says Ritsuka could die from Sumerian Fever if they return. Ereshkigal reveals however she cannot transfer control of Kur unless she erases everyone who knows about her. After she leaves, Ritsuka and Altera agree then need to talk with her again.[16]

Altera hears fighting at the fourth gate and rushes there to mediate it. She and Ritsuka find Ushiwakamaru attacking and insulting Musashibou Benkei. After forcing them to stop fighting, Altera gives Ushiwakamaru a present: a picture of herself. Ushiwakamaru refuses it, so Benkei accepts it instead. Altera tries again with a picture of Benkei, but Ushiwakamaru again refuses, forcing Ritsuka to ask her what she wants. Ushiwakamaru privately tells Altera what she wants, and she is gifted with a Craft Essence depicting Ritsuka and Mash. The gate then opens, and Altera follows Ritsuka when they rush through at Ushiwakamaru’s behest.[17]

After passing through the fifth gate guarded by Jaguar Man, the pair wonder who is attacking Chaldea, if not Ereshkigal. Merlin at the sixth gate reveals the malice left behind by Nergal in Kur is what is attacking Chaldea and imprisoning Ereshkigal. Nergal is trying to usurp Ereshkigal’s position to be the god of the underworld. Merlin then reveals Nergal laid out a trap for Ritsuka and Altera. Nergal then appears and attacks the group, but they defeat him. Altera wonders if the attack on Chaldea will stop now, but Merlin says it won’t since Ereshkigal is the one who sent the plague. He reveals Ereshkigal is attacking Chaldea to commit suicide. She should’ve stopped being a Servant and returned to the normal underworld system as a consequence of breaking her oath as a goddess to help Ritsuka. But she couldn’t because they were humans in Chaldea that still remember her, and there are records of her battles stored there. Ereshkigal plans to give Kur to Nergal’s hands and dissolve herself in the waters of the Abyss to take responsibility. While defeating Ereshkigal will stop the Sumerian Fever, Merlin warns Nergal will rule Kur if Ereshkigal disappears. If Nergal does rule, Kur will become a place of suffering and decay. Merlin then pulls a Craft Essence depicting Altera from her sack that he claims is a dream she wished for. The gate then opens; Merlin warns the seventh gatekeeper isn’t allied with either Ereshkigal or Nergal, and their only desire is to defeat Ritsuka and Altera.[18]

Altera and Ritsuka arrive at the seventh gate, but it is unguarded. But Ishtar suddenly blasts through the gates to reach the pair. She has come to avenge the humiliation she suffered at Ereshkigal's hand by dominating the underworld. She tries to return Ritsuka to Chaldea, saying Ereshkigal will disappear before it succumbs to Sumerian Fever. They refuse, though, despite being told Ereshkigal doesn't remember them. Ishtar then fights them and Altera to test their resolve to enter the Abyss. She is defeated despite her increased power since she was concerned for Ritsuka's safety. She then asks how they'll open the gate and how they opened the previous ones. Altera explains that she gave the gatekeepers presents, which makes them happy. The gate thus considers them saved and open. Altera then gifts Ishtar with a jewel pendant, but the gate doesn't open. Thinking about what would make her happy, Ritsuka gives her an ATM. The gate opens in response, and Altera and Ritsuka pass through.[19]

The pair arrive at the Abyss, but Altera finds they cannot go down any further. Nergal tells them the living can't do so without a guide, as their soul would be devoured. He then moves to kill Ritsuka to ensure Ereshkigal will disappear and Kur will become his. Altera finds she cannot truly destroy him without Ereshkigal's help, so they need to dive to the Abyss' bottom and pull her out. Leonidas then arrives to help at Merlin's request. He tells Ritsuka that they already hold what they need: the Sands of the Underworld. Using the weight of the sands, Ritsuka and Altera sink to the bottom of the Abyss while Leonidas holds off Nergal.[20]

There they encounter Ereshkigal, finding her face has rotten away. Altera asks her why she attacked Chaldea, even though she’ll disappear before it succumbs to Sumerian Fever. Ereshkigal answers it’s because Chaldea is a threat for reducing her to such a state. Ritsuka asks why she needs to disappear, and she tries to answer when Nergal’s voice interrupts. He tells her to obey him so Kur can be reborn as a realm of pain and suffering. Altera realizes it is Nergal’s Authority using his rage and hatred as an avatar with Ereshkigal weakened. Nergal confirms he is the evil while Ereshkigal is the good, both incarnations of Kur itself, and both represent its future. Ereshkigal then complies with his demands to kill the pair so she can finally disappear. Altera struggles against her until Ereshkigal confesses she discarded something precious. She then tries to give her those discarded memories, but Nergal takes over Ereshkigal’s body to kill Altera. Dumuzid arrives, however, and blocks Nergal's attack. He reveals he recovered and safeguarded Ereshkigal’s memories. Altera then returns Ereshkigal's memories to her, and Dumuzid escapes. With her memories restored, Ereshkigal ejects Nergal from her body and returns to her old self. She realizes her mistake and that Nergal only wanted Kur for his own self-gratification. Altera and Ritsuka then help her banish Nergal. Nergal is shocked Ereshkigal can wield his Authority so effectively, and wonders why he surrendered it to her. Dumuzid reveals he is the malice born from his battle with Ereshkigal, so he lacks memories of what happened afterward. He also reveals Nergal gave his Authority to her as a friendly gesture of respect, but Nergal refuses to believe it and disappears.[20]

Afterward, everyone returns to the Abyss’ surface. Dumuzid reveals once the date becomes December 24, Chaldea will return to December 2017, and Kur will return to December one year prior. Ereshkigal then prepares to return Altera and Ritsuka to Chaldea before the date changes, promising to help in the future. Altera and Dumuzid both remark that her smile made the journey worthwhile. Therefore, Altera decides that Christmas is good civilization. However, she doesn’t understand why Dumuzid helped Ereshkigal since it was her and Ishtar that took his power and life. Dumuzid admits he is neutral, and he holds no ill will towards either goddess. Altera then asks where Ereshkigal stands in his ranking of women, to which he implies she is the sole beautiful flower in Kur. Realizing the date will soon change, Altera and Ritsuka escape Kur at mach speed, wishing it Merry Christmas.[20]

Christmas Event: Holy Samba Night[]

As it is forbidden to have the same Santa for two years in a row, Altera asks Quetzalcoatl to be this year’s Santa. Quetzalcoatl accepts the job and goes to receive the Christmas Grail, but she dons a Santa samba outfit, having misheard Altera. Nevertheless, she happily accepts the situation as is. Leonardo da Vinci interrupts the conversation and demands to know what the strange signal she detected was. Altera’s sheep, Zerco, explains Quetzalcoatl and the Christmas Grail’s myths were incompatible with one another. Quetzalcoatl admits her power was spilt in two, with the other half disappearing elsewhere. Altera agrees and reveals the Christmas Grail is missing as well. But Quetzalcoatl isn’t concerned, believing she can still fulfill her duties as Santa. Altera agrees, saying she’s happy as long as Christmas is peaceful. Then, after Quetzalcoatl suspects the part of her that left her combat-loving side, Altera realizes Quetzalcoatl is a Ruler now and wonders if it’s because the side of her that stopped her people making human sacrifices is stronger.

Later, going against the rules, Altera joins Black Quetzal Mask’s (Quetzalcoatl’s evil self) Santa Tag Team Tournament on behalf of west Asia. Her justification is that she would become Neo Santa, which is totally different according to her, if she gained the “true” Santa power. She also thought no one would mind if she underwent a drastic image change. She loses, however.

After Jaguar Man (the tournament’s rules regulator) is defeated, Altera takes the chance to visit Quetzalcoatl in her team’s personal gym and to see Charlemagne’s niece, Bradamante, who is also Quetzalcoatl’s partner. Inserting herself in theirs and Martha’s conversation, she tries to ease Bradamante’s worry about winning through a secret substitute by telling her cowardice is a matter of perspective, certain she fought battles in the past where she didn’t always loudly proclaim her identity at the outset. Bradamante reluctantly agrees and, surprised, asks Altera who she is. Altera introduces her as Santa Senior and explains why she came to Mexico and why she is visiting now. Bradamante asks her if she knows Charlemagne, but Altera only answers that her relationships are complex and difficult to define. She then tells Bradamante and Quetzalcoatl that they’ll struggle against their next match, which is the semifinals, unless they come up with a killer finisher.

She later watches the livestream of the finals, during which Black Quetzal Masks dons the very concept of Santa Claus extracted directly from the Christmas Grail and claims only a Santa of equal purity can harm her now. Altera just goes along with her claims, completely clueless. She and the other Santa Servants then soon lend Bradamante their power so she can defeat Black Quetzal Mask.

Interlude[]

In her first interlude, The Beast Within (私の中の獣, Watashi no Naka no Kemono?), Ritsuka Fujimaru and Mash Kyrielight enters Altera's dream world.[7]

In her second interlude, Memory (私の記憶, Watashi no Kioku?), Altera, Fujimaru and Mash Kyrielight encounters Brynhildr. Brynhildr mistakes Altera as a woman who approached Sigurd.[4]

In her third interlude, My Sword of the War God (私の、軍神の剣, Watashi no, gunshin no ken?),[6]

Abilities[]

Although she is classified as one, Altera's combat abilities surpass those of Heroic Spirits.[1] Upon ascension, she mentions that her current vessel is harmonizing with her main body, and even upon reaching maximum ascension, she says that her strength is still limited by her vessel.[1] According to Mash, Altera's enormous Magical Energy rivals that of a Dragon.[21] Lev Lianur also regards Altera as the strongest hero, and he was certain that she would defeat Ritsuka's party even though they had just defeated Romulus as he had prepared Altera's summoning in advance as a contingency plan, should Romulus ever be defeated.[10]

Combat[]

Altera is capable of dodging Scáthach's surprise attack. On the other hand, Altera is surprised her blade didn't destroy Scáthach's spear. After Scáthach deems her too dangerous, Fergus mac Róich decides to delay her with Caladbolg while the others escape.[21]

Skills[]

Class Skills[]

  • Magic Resistance (B Rank): Cancels the use of spells with a chant that is three verses or below. Receives almost no damage even against High-Magecraft and Greater Rituals.[1]
  • Divinity (B Rank): Altera is not related to a Divine Spirit by blood; however, Europe was overrun on what was considered to be the Authority of God. The target of this fear was given the name, "Scourge of God." Because of this, Altera, who became a Heroic Spirit on Earth, has a high ranking Divine Spirit aptitude.[1]
  • Civilization Erosion (EX Rank): A subconsciously active Skill of the Heroic Spirit Altera. Anything in Altera's grasp is transformed into its best form currently most suited for herself. This is based on Altera's own perspective, not necessarily reflecting the object at its greatest or most excellent.[1] In this case, anything within Altera's grasp is transformed into the Photon Ray sword, an ability shared by her Moon counterpart, who additionally can summon the sword at will.[22]

Personal Skills[]

  • Crest of the Star (EX Rank): The unique pattern imprinted on Altera's body, a strange design that does not belong to the Huns but resulted from some advanced ritual. The higher the rank, the higher one's attack power is increased. By expending Magical Energy through it, Altera can temporarily enhance the performance of any desired part of the body. An efficient Skill that costs little mana but lacks the explosiveness of Skills like Mana Burst. In addition, this unique Skill also has the effects of the Instinct Skill - since it felt like it was missing a little something.[1]
  • Tactics (B Rank): An instinctive capacity for utilizing tactical knowledge in battles where many are mobilized. Provides a plus modifier at the time of using one’s own Anti-Army Noble Phantasm or when dealing with an opposing Anti-Army Noble Phantasm.[1]

Noble Phantasms[]

Altera's Noble Phantasm is Photon Ray, the prototype of Divine Contructs and the Sword of the War God Ares. Even when summoned as a Servant of Earth, Altera is capable of unleashing its full power, Teardrop Photon Ray, a powerful Anti-Fortress Noble Phantasm.[1] In the Solomon Singularity, Romulus is unsure of whether its power is compounded or not, since a long time had passed since he last saw it. However, he claims that she seems to wield the sword more skillfully than his father. According to Boudica, it is the virtual manifestation of a Divine Spirit.[23] Although Saber Alter considers Altera herself to be a disappointment, once Altera starts drawing all the mana in the atmosphere into her blade, Artoria acknowledges her Teardrop Photon Ray as a worthy foe. Despite that Noble Phantasm being capable of incinerating the world, Excalibur Morgan overpowers it, annihilating Altera.[24]

In the Septem Singularity, after Altera absorbed the Holy Grail and fired Teardrop Photon Ray, Mash claimed that its tremendous magical energy reminded her of Excalibur Morgan. Mash also stated that Lord Chaldeas wouldn't be able to block it on its own, as she needed the help of Boudica's Chariot of Boudica to block it, and even then, Lü Bu and Spartacus were destroyed by the light since they were rampaging around the palace entrance. After witnessing its power, Nero feared that Altera would burn the Rome capital to ash to which Dr. Roman agreed she did in fact have the ability necessary to do.[11]

Forms and Alternate Versions[]

Santa[]

Look at the sky. If you are one who holds prayers for the Holy Night, you should be able to see it. The lone rainbow soaring through the night sky. The group of bleating sheeps. And her body wrapped in a daring costume, the beautiful figure of Santa who's feeling a little cold...! Her name is Altera the San(ta) (アルテラ・ザ・サン〔タ〕, Arutera za San(ta)?). The western king, the sword princess possessing the Crest of the Star, was awakened to the duty of Santa Claus by an ill-omened destiny, taking action without losing to the fact that she is in a poor physical condition (slight fever); she's the reliable third Heroic Spirit of Christmas. This time, she is accompanied by a large number of horse-riding soldiers from the great king's anecdotes... However, they are all in the shapes of adorable sheeps (space version). Why is it like this?[25]

An overly healthy body and mind, and a little ignorant... no, pure disposition was given to her as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. When Chaldea's staff was suffering from a mysterious fever, since Altera the San(ta) was the only "Servant able to move", for the sake of the peace of Chaldea and Christmas, riding on the back of a sheep called ZercoWP, she rushed out.[25]

Personality[]

For Altera, who wanted to ascertain the civilization called Christmas for some time now, this role was something she wished for. Changing into showy Santa clothes, she dove into the Underworld. The only thing making her anxious is the chilliness of the Santa clothes. "Doesn't it cover too little compared to normal clothing...?" says Altera, tilting her head. The personality is basically Altera's, but as a result of having a fever, her decision-making ability is lower than usual, so it's easier to give her detailed instructions. It even feels like she got sweeter and more charming. Due to the fever (thankfully), her civilization destroying meter has lowered considerably. The usual Altera's personality is 90% that of a warrior and 10% of a girl, while Altera Santa's 40% warrior and 60% girl. Altera's core is that of a romanticist maiden, so being entrusted with the role of Santa Claus makes her happy and excited.[25]

Since the Master is a reliable partner, they are seen as a lovely sheep and she refers to them as "fluffy Master". Since "I am Santa Claus before I am Altera now" is what she tells herself, her demeanor and responses are softer. In order to deliver "precious gifts" that were entrusted to her by the shining sheep, she relies on her straightforward Master.[25]

The name of the sheep she uses as her mount is Zerco. Its signature move is the imitation of Santa Claus Elder.[25]

※Santa Claus Elder is an imaginary being of Altera.[25]

Abilities[]

Although Altera was defeated by Karna (Santa), he regards her as a very strong opponent. He says it would’ve been dangerous for him had she been in perfect physical condition. The wool on her sheep’s body could absorb the impact from Karna's punches.[26]

Class skills:

  • Magic Resistance (C Rank): Invalidates magecraft with an aria of three verses or lower. Even if it’s a greater magecraft · Greater Ritual, she barely receives any damage. Since she sometimes can’t refute any claim of 『It’s different from the present I wished』 due to her natural kindness, her resistance to magical energy is lower than when she was a Saber.[9]
  • Riding (EX Rank): Chosen as a Heroic Spirit of Christmas, and engulfed by the quiet flames of a sense of duty, Altera has greatly improved · transformed her Riding skill. Concretely, she has become a sheep master. The figure running not on a famous horse, but on the famous sheep Zerco, is associated with that of the strongest king of the nomadic and equestrian tribe of the Huns who ran about the Western world… is it… associated?[9]
  • Civilization Erosion (EX Rank): A skill that is unconsciously activated by the Heroic Spirit Altera. It transmutes whatever she has in her hand into the best attributes for her current self. 『The best』 doesn’t mean 『the most excellent』, but refers to the current obsession of Altera herself. It’s not necessary to say what Altera’s current obsession this time is. Originally, the horses that should have been taken along as horses have all turned into sheep (kind of), and conversely her beloved sword Sword of the War God has been modified into the Cane (staff) of the War God. Amazing.[9]
  • Divinity (B Rank): Existence of aptitude as a Divine Spirit. Altera herself has no biological relationship with a Divine Spirit, but the fact of she trampling the European World was considered God’s authority, and being subject of awe resulted in her obtaining the two names of 『Punishment of God』 『Whip of God』. From those things, Altera, who became a Heroic Spirit on earth, possesses a high rank of Divine Spirit aptitude.[9]

Personal skills:

  • Gift of the Stars (B Rank): A skill acquired after becoming Santa Claus. Giving presents, enriching the heart. Although Altera wants to give presents, she can’t quite grasp the desire of others, and also because of her reserved personality, the skill rank is lower than Santa Alter (Artoria). Santa Alter has 『Gift of the Saint』, but in Altera’s case, it’s changed for some reason to Gift of the Starman.[9]
  • Natural Body (D Rank): Having become a Heroic Spirit of Christmas, since she can’t regulate her body temperature properly due to having the concept of winter added, it has unfortunately been lost. (Not used in 『FateGO』)[9]
  • Rainbow Sugar Sculpture (B Rank): The star attached to the Christmas tree’s top is called the Star of Bethlehem, and symbolizes the birth of the Messiah. It is said that those struck by Altera Santa’s cane with a clunk will be given great blessings and favors. A minimum version of Merlin’s 『Hero Creation』. It’s Christmas, this much of a cheat is allowed![9]
  • Crest of the Twinkling Star (EX Rank): A skill that has changed due to the fusion of the unique patterns carved on Altera’s body and the concept of Christmas. Through this strong blessing power, Altera-san awakens the potential engraved on her Saint Graph, and can act as Altera Santa for just three minutes on Earth! A super power-up for 3 turns. After 3 turns, stun.[9]

Noble Phantasm:

Altera's Noble Phantasm is Candy Star Photon Ray.

Development[]

Creation and Conception[]

Altera was designed by huke in Fate/Grand Order.[1][2] Her scenario writer is Hikaru Sakurai in Fate/Grand Order.[1]

Comment from Illustrator[]

"Miss Altera somewhat regrets that she turned into this difficult design where it was hard to put in and depict her having a fighting spirit. Although I received lots of orders, there are many of them that I do not remember by now in the last 2 years or so, but there are very amazing things written into this setting, huh? What’s going on in this? It is sort of that feeling. That setting… is it not shown yet? I honestly want to see!" (huke)[1]

"The rough sketch I drew when I said 「I’ll do it」 after being requested to do Altera the San(ta) went along easily so I worked happily with that pace. The scenario is the best and Ere-chan is so cute this has naturally entered my TOP3 of works I’m glad to have done! Thank you very much!" (huke)[9]

Whether or not one has aptitude as a divine spirit.
Altera is not related to a divine spirit by blood; however Europe was overrun on what was considered to be the authority of God. The target of this fear was given the name, "Scourge of God." Because of this, Altera who became a Heroic Spirit on Earth has a high ranking divine spirit aptitude.

    Civilization Erosion: EX
A subconsciously active skill of the heroic spirit Altera. Anything within her grasp is transformed into its “best” form currently most suited for herself.
This is based on Altera’s own perspective, not necessarily reflecting the object at its greatest or most excellent.

The higher the rank, the higher one's attack power is increased. By expending mana through it, one can temporarily enhance the performance of any desired part of the body. An efficient skill that costs little mana but lacks the explosiveness of skills like Power Burst.
In addition, this unique skill also has the effects of the Instinct skill - since it felt like it was missing a little something, or so she claimed.

    Military Tactics: B

    Character
First Pronoun: watashi Second Pronoun: omae / ** (without honorifics) Third Pronoun: yatsu / kyatsu / ** (without honorifics)

    ○Personality
With her excellent instincts, she can deal with even the drastic of circumstances without abandoning her reason – a proud and logical fighter. However, there is a sort of ’emptiness’ about her.

Regardless of friend or foe, she has some magnanimity for those warriors whose skill (performance) she has acknowledged, but those who stand against her are treated as only obstructions to be removed, and she is fundamentally merciless. There is no hesitation in her blade. In battle, she can coolly and correctly grasp the situation, becoming a merciless killing machine.

Although she recognizes combat as where she is truly in her element, she personally does not like it. She fights because she is a fighter. In the name of the violent and unchained God of War, she kills all who stands in her way and destroys all ‘civilization’ before her, nothing more. She is unused and inexperienced in matters outside of war and combat.

She was born with a fondness for the God of War, Mars (Ares). She would call him “Marc” though she did not enforce this on others. It was just something she preferred.

In truth, she dislikes her more common name of “Attila”. She does not dislike its meaning – ‘father’ or ‘controller’ – but rather its sound, and is somewhat more attached the German “Etzel”. She calls herself “Altera” and wishes to be known as such, but it is difficult to have her explain the reason. Only to the very small number of people she trusts will she quietly disclose the truth – because it does not sound charming or sweet.

○Motivation · Attitude to the Master
She treats her Master stoically, recognizing them as a general or adviser-like figure, and will generally go along with anything they say with an “I see”. Instead of trusting as a human being, the situation is closer to a fighting machine on the battlefield that fully relies on external software (the Master) to process thoughts.

Her wish for the Holy Grail is ‘to live a life not as a warrior’. She does not despise the life that she spent fighting, but she is interested to find out how she would have lived otherwise.

    ○Dialogue Examples
“My name is Altera. I am a warrior of the god of war and a descendant of the Xionghu.”
    “I will demolish that civilization.”
“If the Holy Grail serves as a vessel that records everything, then I’ll… simply destroy it.”
“I will destroy, and I will triumph. Up to now, as well as after this.”
“If I remember correctly, I am also a person called… Attila… Personally, I am not very happy about that. The reason? The reason is… I don’t know how to say it. Eventually, there may even be a reason that I can speak of, but as of right now, that name is just unpleasant.”

    ○Historical Figure
Attila the Hun was the overlord who established a great empire in the 5th century.
She was a warrior and king of the Huns, the descendants of the Xiongnu.
Leading an army of cavalry, the conquests of this great hero covered a great part of the map, from Western Asia to Russia, Eastern Europe, and even Gaul. It is said that this was one of the causes for the eventual downfall of the Roman Empire.
Throughout her life, she was always in the midst of battle.
Due to the terrifying acts she committed in war, she was greatly feared in all European nations as the “Scourge of God”.
She is a pure “King of War”. In contrast with her martial achievements, she did not succeed politically, and her empire rapidly fell apart and dissolved after her death. However, the awe and dread infused in the name “Attila” remains in the memories of people to this day.

    ○In Grand Order
She was an avatar of destruction. An engine of war that scythed down the many lives who had stood in her path. That was how she had been made to be… so the elders of the Huns had said to her.
It was her purpose to exercise her capabilities as intended, and she never held any doubt on the matter.

Becoming destruction itself, she fought like a raging tempest, king of the Huns yet not one of them.
It barely even registered to her that she had armies at her back as she swung her sword with single mind.
    Destruction. Domination. Invasion.
She could not be sated, even as the lands of the Huns grew beyond their ability to control. She merely swung the sword and continued the slaughter. Even in the moment when death came to her, she recalled – as she laid in a pool of her own blood, she had thought only of ways to fell Rome.

However, having become a heroic spirit and taken form as a Servant, she began silently questioning herself. Had she perhaps been too much of a warrior? What if she had not become the embodiment of destruction itself? What if she never gripped the sword of the war god?

She had been feared by Europe as the punishment brought down by their absolute deity, the very whip of God Himself. She had been a fighting machine. History had even forgotten that she was a woman. What life could she have lived, if not as a warrior?

What would she have spent her time on?
Would she have been a traveler, freely circling the world on the back of her horse?
Would she have been a grower of life, tilling the earth as she had seen the people of Europe done?
Would she be baking bread in a smoldering oven? Hunting birds and beasts in the wild?
Would she be learning words and language, and writing it down in books?
Would she, with reddened cheeks and gentle smile, have pressed herself into the breast of another?

She did not know. But she wondered…

    ○Affiliated Characters
    Other Servants
Other Servants All civilization must be destroyed. There is no difference between them.

    Caster Servants
Although she witnessed the works of curses in life, as she herself had few ties with magecraft, she holds some actual interest in those pure Casters who practice magecraft.

    [v] Fate/EXTELLA material - Encyclopedia: Altera (Earth) [Character], p.096-097 [T]

    Altera (Earth) [Person]
When the White Titan crumbled to the Earth, it left a small sliver of its lifeforce within its own ruins as a backup. In the world of Fate/EX, the elders of the Hun tribe, descendants of the Xiongnu (Hsiung-nu, Huna), excavated the ruins and found that sliver of life in the form of a human girl. Seeing her potential, they took her in and raised her.
As she grew, living as a Hun and taking on their language and culture, subconscious memories of Altera's previous life swirled in the back of her mind. Because of those memories, she became aware of the “War God”. She asked the elders a question:
“Does the War God have a name?”
The elders replied that there was a War God named Mars in the Western lands.
“Then my blade is the Sword of Mars. I think I would like to name it that.”
Despite the memories and dreams she could never explain, she believed herself to be an ordinary human.
And as a human, she led her people to march across the Western lands, establishing herself as the "Great King of Destruction”.
Said to have lived in the fifth century AD, she carved a great empire through much of the Western world.
Leading armies on horseback, she ravaged battlefields. Her empire was a vast territory consisting of western Asia, Russia, Eastern Europe, and Gaul, conquered through immeasurable bloodshed.
It is even said that she was responsible for the fall of the Western Roman Empire.
In life, she knew war and little else. She was called "punishment from God" and "the Scourge of God" in all corners of Europe. especially Northwestern Rome. The sight of her ferocious figure on the battlefield was widely feared.
...She never knew that her drive to conquer and destroy came from an ideology embedded in her very DNA.
That being said, the Altera on Earth had no other connection with the Umbral Star. She lived and died as a human, revered — among her own people, at least — as a hero. Today. she is known simply as “Attila the Hun.”
From the perspective of the Altera sleeping on the Moon, the life of Attila was but a fanciful dream. This is similar to the circumstances surrounding Saber and "The Forests of Camlann and the Holy Grail War" in Fate/stay night.
But Attila's memories left their mark on Titan Altera, sparking a glimmer of humanity within her. As a result, she began to question her programmed mission.
The Altera in Fate/Grand Order is the Heroic Spirit form of the Titan Altera.
Although the Altera of FGO is no longer connected to the titan version of herself, she recalls traces of that connection, which she considers memories of a previous life she can't quite grasp.
But a vestige of her old self's power is still buried in the depths of her core...
