AmourWP (アムール?) is a Ruler-class Pseudo-Servant in the body of Caren Hortensia summoned by Ritsuka Fujimaru in the Grand Orders of Fate/Grand Order.
Profile[]
Identity[]
Also using the True Names Caren Cupid Hortensia (カレン・C・オルテンシア, Karen C Orutenshia?) and God Caren (ゴッドカレン?), she is a Pseudo-Servant of Amour, the God of Love in Roman mythology, in the body of Caren Hortensia. Due to Amour's power and Caren's personality matching each other, they were reborn as the perfect miraculous fusion Divine Spirit Caren-chan (according to her). Her Spiritual Core also possesses the aspect of Amour's Greek counterpart, ErosWP (エロース?).[1]
More so than the Caren from Fate/hollow ataraxia, she is closer to the Caren of Fate/tiger colosseum.[2]
Although Amour and Eros are generally considered to be counterparts of the same god of love, the fundamental difference is that Amour is a primordial deity while Eros was the result of the mythos being sublimated to be son of Aphrodite (or Venus to the Romans).[3]
As a sacrifice, she was chosen to be a Servant for the side of humanity during the Human Order Incineration.[1]
Appearance[]
Personality[]
In three words, Caren's personality can be described as dry, cool, and cynical. She may be a young girl, but you'll never hear her speak honeyed words. Is she a saintly devil, or a devilish saint? Scathing. Clear-eyed. Abusive. Promiscuous. Ruthless. Caren has been described in these terms, but above all, she is a saint who is girlishly innocent at heart. Her powerful conviction and faith stem from her lifelong dedication to her Lord in Heaven and all the souls He loves.
When in her position as Church overseer, she is reticent and never gives word to her own opinion or circumstances, however, when in cases such as these, where she is not restrained by her duties as a nun, she speaks, works, plots and even makes moves befitting of the mastermind behind any story, and does so often.[2]
When Caren was chosen to play Amor's role, the jolt that ran through her body was not revulsion toward a false god, but rather a thunderous sense of duty. Amor may be of a different pantheon, but his role as a messenger of love is an admirable one. Is not the best way to return God's love carrying out that duty with all her heart? And if that means unilaterally altering people's fates, who can blame her for being excited!? ...Burning with a newfound passion for her work, she changes her name to Caren C. Hortensia and sets off to bring righteousness to Valentine's Day at Chaldea.[1]
Eros, the god of love in Greek mythology, and Amor, the god of love in Roman mythology, comprise Caren's divine core. Although she goes by Amor in her angelic form, Caren uses her own name while in her default second Ascension form and completely rejects Eros (he's useless anyway). Furthermore, she puts impersonates Cupid, said to symbolize both of the aforementioned deities. This behavior too stems from Caren's devout belief that love is selfless. Amor aside, this is also part of her rejection of Eros (sexual love).
In Greek philosophy, there are four types of love: erotic, friendly, philanthropic, and filial. Caren's idea of a god's philanthropic love (agape) shuns erotic love, which she sees as vulgar. Thus, Caren is a Pseudo-Servant of Amor, a god of love, but fundamentally denies Amor and Eros, believing herself to be a messenger of a far greater form of love. The eccentric, contradictory streak of masochism and sadism that runs through this Servant is indeed very much like Caren.[1]
Though... be that as it may, she loves seeing people suffer; just as much as she loves for her own body to suffer. Basically, both sadism and masochism have come together to form her ridiculously pain-in-the-ass personality.[2]
Her words and actions are eccentric, but the foundation of it all is her "devotion to the world."[1] Because of this, though her plotting serves to make people's lives better, she arranges for exceedingly arduous hardships in order to achieve such betterment... apparently. She finds the amassing of wealth to be a virtue, but only because money is the symbol of authority that rules over man. God is, after all, the desire to be loved and ruled over. For someone like Caren, who occasionally becomes one with God's love when she finds herself deep in prayer (according to herself), to amass wealth is to bring oneself happiness.[2]
If it's for the sake of exorcising devils, she willingly offers up her body to any human or animal, always prioritizing their happiness over her own.
Relationships[]
- Cú Chulainn (Lancer)
- "Naturally, Amour and Ireland's Child of Light aren't connected at all. That I'm acquainted with Mr Cú Chulainn is due to Caren Hortensia's experience. Well, that was rightfully speaking nothing more than an event from a dream, and I'm not supposed to have a way of knowing him after I woke from my dream."[4]
- Child-Gil
- "Yes. I'm getting along with the young Gilgamesh-san here as well. Since that one has a really good financial situation."[4]
- Manannán mac Lir
- "What a wonderful Deity Servant. I expected no less from the famous Manannan of Celtic mythology. As for his human vessel, she is the among the greatest of all mankind in the durability department, so feel free to let her take as many hits as you want to keep shooting those Fragarachs."[2]
- Grigori Rasputin
- "I haven't given eschatology much thought, but I have no choice but to admit that we must find ourselves in the end-times. Why, because it must be the end of the world if such a temperate and upright monk from vast Russia were to choose him as their human vessel. Oh, but I do hear that Mr. Rasputin was someone who had a lot of tangles with the fairer sex... I suppose I am left with no other choice but to purify the both of you in the fires of my bazooka."[2]
- Senji Muramasa
- "Senji Muramasa... For some reason he concerns me. No, it's not the Heroic Spirit Senji Muramasa, nor the human who became his vessel... When I use abusive language on him from time to time, he feels really lonely. As if he nostalgically remembered golden days that didn't exist..."[4]
- Amakusa Shirou Tokisada
- "Speaking of Rulers, Amakusa-san is a wonderful one as well. He looks gentle but inside he's like forged steel. Is it the ruthless faith and passion beneath his smile? It makes me want a certain mite priest to follow his example."[4]
- Martha
- "I admire Saint Martha. That level of exposure… Nn, excuse me. That wonderful healthy body is furnished with a chaste mentality. That's just like the saints I learned about at the seminars. ...Er, eh? Did she just break through a hundred tiles...?!"[4]
- Ishtar
- "Ah, Ishtar-senpai, hii. As expected from my great senpai at the Holy Grail War. She came to Chaldea since way before♡ I'm a rookie who just arrived, the newest goddess, so I'll count on you for guiding and encouraging me."[4]
- Parvati / Kama
- "Parvati and Kama... huh. Both are goddesses who require special attention. Ishtar-senpai is a shitty small fry at love, but these two, how to say it... Love, is heavy..."[4]
- Artemis
- "Artemis was a goddess like this...? According to Amour's memories... She was a more ruthless and solid divinity. But, I don't hate this Artemis. Love pins down thoroughly, right!"[4]
- BB/BB Cosmos
- "BB... was it? She puts on airs of omnipotence, is impertinent, younger than me, is a little devil, and doesn't she lack a bit of decorum? Master... Do you like that type of girls?"[4]
- Ciel
- "Hm? Are you talking about her? That human juggernaut? Surely she would never show up in Chaldea... is what I used to think, but with Ciel anything is possible, I suppose. She may not look it, but she is someone who has nonchalantly defeated a handful of last bosses already. I'm sure that she would display tremendous soloing potential, and then go all 'oops, did I do it again?' here as well. Hopefully I have not jinxed us, God willing."[2]
- Angra Mainyu
- When it comes to a more simple, human love, there is only one she has wished happiness for by her own initiative. Even now, she keeps that wish, and those feelings, buried deep within her heart.[2]
Role[]
Fate/Grand Order[]
Valentine's Day 2021[]
Abilities[]
In combat, Amour is able to output Amor's powers in a variety of forms (arrow, bazooka, bomb, lightning, earthquakes) as well wrap up enemies in her Shroud of Valentinus.[2][5]
Her weapons are the massive God-Bazooka and the heart-shaped familiars of Mister Amor and Little Eros. Eros is abused by her constantly, but seeing as they appears to like it, there shouldn't be an issue. Through the power of her strong faith, she is able to guide the hearts of man in whichever direction she likes. Much like she's brainwashing or seducing them.[2]
In Fate/tiger colosseum, Caren previously used a morningstar named "My Weight Is Equal to My Wielder's Love" with a weight that depended on how much love its wielder had. Although unseen, Caren still possesses the weapon. As Caren loves all of mankind, the weight of the weapon is equal to the weight of the Earth. Her Noble Phantasm is the Fate/Grand Order version of this.[6][2]
Skills[]
Class Skills[]
- Item Construction (A Rank): A professional at fashioning tools to be used on the heart. This represents Caren's arrows of love. They'll give you a push when you're about to falter, stirring your heart to function even better. She can create many such wonderful items.[1]
- Independent Action (A Rank): Caren C. Hortensia, messenger of love, serves more than just her Master. She has a duty to the Lord's heart and to all the people His love must reach. She is not bound by her Master's business; she does whatever she wants. Freedom.[1][2]
- Masochistic Spiritualist Constitution (EX Rank): A physical disposition prone to being possessed by nearby demons, regardless of the owner's will. Recreates demons that exist as phenomena and, under certain conditions, physically incarnates them. Easily afflicted by Poison, Curse, and Burn-related status effects. Furthermore, Caren's offensive power increases while under such effects. Fearsome sadism born of masochism. Still, it's not something she can do on command.
- Divine Core of the Goddess (B Rank): This was originally Amor's Divinity Skill, but his host's powerful faith has transformed it. To the girl, only her almighty Father possesses true divinity.[1]
- Steel Faith (A Rank): Caren's personal variant of the Craft Essence "Steel Training." An albino girl who should have died at birth defied all expectations and grew up. She believes that her survival can only be a miracle and physical proof of God's love. Acquired as a passive skill with resistance to Terror, Charm, and Buster effects.[1]
Personal Skills[]
- Shroud of Valentinus (A Rank): Eros (erotic love). This was originally Caren's trusty Shroud of Magdala, but she's now using it as a "shroud of lovers." Apparently, she named it after Valentinus to play along with the holiday spirit at Chaldea.[1]
- Golden Arrow (A Rank): Philia (friendly love). Angelic arrows that Amorize human hearts they pierce. Forcefully. "Love always comes as a surprise, doesn't it?"[1]
- Mana Burst (Love) (A Rank): Storge (filial love) aka God Caren. A super-buff called forth for the singular one she loves and must protect. Sounds kinda awesome.[1]
Noble Phantasm[]
Amour's Noble Phantasm is The Greatest Hits - "Calling Agape".
Development[]
Creation and Conception[]
Amour was designed by Shidzuki Morii in Fate/Grand Order. Her scenario writer is Kinoko Nasu in Fate/Grand Order.
Caren was specifically not given a voice line for Angra Mainyu because the confession in Fate/hollow ataraxia was something that could only exist in those promised four days. Those shattered pieces of glass do not exist in Chaldea.[7]
Comment from Illustrator[]
"Caren C. Hortensia is like if the Gods of Love from each mythology assembled inside of one human vessel. By letting this very crazy lore come together with these gods' crazy divinities, our rather quirky Missionary of Love was born. Separate from such mankind-scale love, she is actually a nun with who holds a different love deep within her heart. I have some memories of sending in a variety of design proposal, gradually refining each of the "forms of love" she represents. I had been instructed to make the first ascension easily identifiable as Cupid, so I added and removed a bunch of accessories, scarfs, and other things until eventually settling on the current outfit. I also had been ordered to make the paper bag, and baby stuff that had appeared in previous works, so I made sure that was reflected in her sprites." (Shidzuki Morii)[2]
