ArchimedesWP (アルキメデスWP, Arukimedesu?), Class Name Caster (キャスター, Kyasutā?), is a Masterless Caster-class Servant charged with the security of SE.RA.PH in the Moon Cell Holy Grail War. He is an independent Servant in the conflict and the main antagonist of Fate/EXTELLA.[2]

Profile[]

Identity[]

A "celebrated genius in human history." A mathematician ahead of his time.[2]

History[]

Originally, Archimedes lived around c. 287 - c. 212 BC as a mathematician, engineer, and astronomer. He was born to a line of artists, and took up astronomy just as his father did before him. At the time of his death in the year c. 212 BC, he resided in the city of SyracuseWP, located on the eastern coast of current-day SicilyWP. Archimedes' famous achievements involve a range of geometrical theorems from "On the Equilibrium of PlanesWP", "On the Measurement of a CircleWP", and "On the Sphere and CylinderWP", as well as "Archimedes' cattle problemWP" in Diophantine analysisWP.[1]

While his peers considered him a genius, they also considered him rather strange. Archimedes lived in proud seclusion far from AlexandriaWP, the hotbed of academic pursuits at the time, and preferred written correspondence to face-to-face dialogue. Most scholars of his era treasured recognition just as much as discovery, and basked in the praise of the citizens around them. Archimedes had no such interest, and was said to have been fixated on the beauty and accuracy of his own theorems.[1]

Archimedes was also the cornerstone of Syracuse's defenses, as he was even more talented as an engineer than he was a mathematician. The seaside city-state relied on his supreme war machines far more than it did on ordinary soldiers. PlutarchWP wrote in his Parallel LivesWP that Archimedes was related to King Hiero IIWP, the ruler of Syracuse. It is easy to imagine how he ended up in the position of chief engineer tasked with the defense of the city-state. Archimedes' fame as an engineer was known throughout the land from early on. The ancient Greek historian PolybiusWP, born in c. 200 BC, wrote a following account in his Universal HistoryWP some seventy years after Archimedes' death.[1]

« If you were to see these works, you would easily understand how the intelligence of a single human being can bring about something amazing if they are given proper stage. In truth, the Roman armies who had shown overwhelming might on the planes of both ground and sea were convinced that they would be able to conquer the city-state of Syracuse should just that single old man disappear. However, as long as Archimedes existed, and his methods of protecting Syracuse were in place, they would fear to tread anywhere near the city's walls. »

(Polybius)

Many of the defense mechanisms Archimedes invented effectively demolished a variety of would-be invaders. However, in the year of c. 212...[1]

Syracuse formed an alliance with CarthageWP in the Second Punic WarWP against the Romans, and so Syracuse and Rome became enemies. Consequently, a Roman force led by the General Marcus Claudius MarcellusWP laid siege to the port city by both land and sea. Archimedes' fortifications effectively repelled invaders, but the city fell to treachery, and Archimedes lost his life in the aftermath. However, his story comes to an end after the siege, rather than during it.[1]

Archimedes' name was well known to the Romans, and the victorious General Marcellus sent out orders that the scholar was not to be harmed. According to popular account given by Plutarch in his heroic tale Parallel Lives, Archimedes was contemplating a mathematical diagram when the city was captured. A Roman soldier commanded him to come along, but he declined, saying that he had to finish working on the problem. The soldier then flew into a rage and killed Archimedes with his sword. (Plutarch calls this story a mere rumor, and clarifies that there were other rumors as well, like one stating that Archimedes was killed because the soldier thought the technical drawings in his possession would be valuable spoils of war.)[1]

It is said that Archimedes' last words, uttered to the soldier who stopped him while he was drawing geometric configurations in the study, were "μή μου τούς κύκλους τάραττε" meaning "Do not step on my figures/Do not disturb my circles!" Despite those last words being well known, they are not noted in Parallel Lives, and their source remains a mystery.[1]

A bit of trivia: When the Roman orator and politician Marcus Tullius CiceroWP was serving as a quaestor in Sicily in c. 75 BC, he reported finding the tomb of Archimedes near Agrigentine gate in Syracuse, clearly neglected and overgrown with bushes. It is said that the tomb contained a sculpture illustrating the late scholar's favorite proof, consisting of a sphere and a cylinder of the same height and diameter. This was one of the greatest mathematical accomplishments of his life.[1]

Personality[]

Archimedes favors logic and rationalism, does not stray from his own views if possible, and endeavors to treat all things with objective dignity.[2]

Archimedes is introverted, stubborn, and active. He is the personification of order, individualism, reason, and rationality. He is loquacious, but while his tone is gentle, there is fire behind his words. He is a curious creature, both social and rational.[1]

Archimedes believes that the world should be peaceful, and does his best to ensure that it is, but he also places himself above this level of reasoning. "Totalitarianism is the best method to achieve societal happiness. That is because we are able to acquire more resources in the most efficient manner by these means. This is how a system should be. Yes, indeed... All human beings, aside from myself, should work for the greater good."[1]

Archimedes approves of a society that is logical, but not necessarily because he dislikes conflict; rather, he thinks it is necessary to sustain a machine with high productivity.[1]

Archimedes believes that the solutions he seeks are paramount to everything else, and he has used everything and anything as mechanisms to help achieve his goals.[1]

The foolishness of humans... The weakness that prevents them from accepting reality for what it is because they prioritize their emotions... This is what Archimedes hates, but it is not a personal dislike so much as animosity towards the overall way humans exist.[1]

Archimedes hates the way humans cannot succeed individually without creating a "hideous" society, and is disappointed in people whose opinions are swayed by their emotions. Thus, it is rare for him to show his animosity in front of people.[1]

Archimedes lived his mortal life as a man who could not see the beauty in anything other that the solutions he created within himself. Because of his great intellect and his broad view however, he was never ostracized from society. Even though he was resigned to the fact that he was "different" from everyone around him, he was also socially adept and magnanimous, and his genius contributed greatly to the advancement of Syracuse.[1]

Other mathematicians of the time only pursued the "beauty of their theorems", and did not concern themselves with the way society should be. And so, Archimedes could even be considered an aberration of his time as he performed work in both math and industry. His dual nature is what led to his conflicted personality as both an engineer in the service of mankind, and an egoist.[1]

After Archimedes becomes corrupted by the Umbral Star, his frustrations with both his own fallings and the foolish commoners all rise to the surface, turning him aggressive. Truth be told, he is in a constant state of anger. He recalls every goal he failed in life... He laments that humanity makes the same mistakes over and over again... His superior intelligence is still his defining trait, which makes him angry about everything.[1]

And so, Archimedes thinks nothing of manipulating others.[1]

As a matter of fact, Archimedes enjoys it. He had always thought that the only things that would move as he intended were his numbers, his creations. But after all this time, he has realized that even the world itself is merely a tool, one he can manipulate to his heart's desire.[1]

So Archimedes hides his aggressive nature with a smile, and finds joy in the way that he can now draw fully upon all of his strengths to achieve his goals.[1]

"Previously, I had only found joy in numbers. Troublingly enough, I now find that my own life is somewhat amusing."[1]

One could even say that Archimedes has finally regained the innocence of his youth. He can even smile at his enemies, as he considers everything a "tool". He recognizes the obstacles before him, but he does not hate them. Even if he was betrayed, as long as the process that led to his betrayal is logically correct, he is satisfied with the outcome.[1]

What he truly dislikes and find distasteful are opponents who have "strayed from logic." He loathes those who would not choose the correct answer when it's right in front of them. His mortal enemies are those who would rampage down the wrong path at full speed ahead without a shread of reasoning.[1]

Role[]

Fate/EXTELLA[]

Prior to the start of Fate/EXTELLA's story, Archimedes is given form as a technician to perform maintenance on SE.RA.PH, chosen by the Moon Cell as a trustworthy administrator for his skills, personality, and merits, but after coming into contact with the harvester of worlds known as the Umbral Star, Archimedes becomes its devoted apostle.[1][2]

When Archimedes interfaces with the once-sealed Ark of the Stars, he becomes corrupted by its influence. He then begins to make preparations so that the Umbral Star can consume the Moon Cell once and for all. Although he acts like a vassal to the Umbral Star, he has no intention of placing himself beneath it. For its part, the Umbral Star has no method to control Archimedes either.[1]

If asked why would he work for the Umbral Star, Archimedes would reply with:

"No reason. I am simply bored of the civilizations of Earth. I want to know about how intelligence of other sentient life forms are constructed."[1]

Archimedes is the mastermind who awakens Altera's deadliest form, the White Titan Sefer.[1]

The Caster Servant Archimedes appears before Nero Claudius, who fights for the two Regalias. Archimedes is a standalone Servant summoned as a maintenance engineer for the Moon Cell Automaton, the spiritronic computer that created the spiritronic virtual world SE.RA.PH. He says that the 14,000-year refresh cycle for the Moon Cell's systems is happening right now. However, he declares that the Regalia, articles of authority, are necessary for the system refresh; they are incomplete, having been divided between Nero and Tamamo-no-Mae in an accident. He renews the determination of Nero and her Master to fight, not just for dominance over territory, but to stabilize the lunar world itself, which has begun to show signs of discord.[2]

Flame Poem[]

Following Tamamo-no-Mae's declaration of war, Archimedes appears before Nero in her palace. He introduces himself as the system engineer for Moon Cell, and lies about what happened to Hakuno at the Moon Cell. He further lies that the Titan residing there divided the Regalia when it attacked Hakuno. He also explains how the Moon Cell undergoes a system update every 14,000 years, for which the complete Regalia is needed to complete the update. He lies that he was the one who rescued Hakuno after they were attacked by the Titan. After Nero thanks him, Archimedes praises her as the rightful ruler of SE.RA.PH, and calls Tamamo a mere pretender. He reveals Hakuno's amnesia is the result of them being divided along with the Regalia. He discerns the Hakuno with Nero as the Mind, and explains they need their Soul to prevent them from disappearing. After confirming the Hakuno with Tamamo is their Soul, Archimedes offers his services to Nero, to which he is named her strategist. Later at Mare Mellum, he explains the Regalia's ability to draw mana from the Moon Cell to empower its wielder.

Some time later, Archimedes reports to Nero that her forces are continuing to reclaim her territories. He further report that she has also conquered nearly 80% of the new territories as well as 70% of Tamamo's territories. This leaves only 30% of SE.RA.PH left before Nero claims all of SE.RA.PH.

Later in Mare Luxuria, Archimedes appears and congratulates Nero on her victory over Tamamo. He explains to her that his skills are needed to reunite the Regalia as per his duty as the Moon Cell's system engineer. He orders Tamamo to give her Regalia to Nero, but tells her to rejoice as the Mind and Soul of Hakuno will unite once the two Regalia are joined. He confirms the truth of his words to Nero, and prepares to unite the Regalia when Nero interrupts him. Then, like everyone else, he is surprised when Elizabeth appears and steals Tamamo's Regalia from her. When she puts the Regalia on her finger, Archimedes explains its mana is overloading due to it rejecting Elizabeth as unworthy. After the Regalia shatters, he agonizes over how a clash between two Regalia shouldn't have ended like that. He also laments how he'll perform the update now since the Regalia impossibly broke, as it's impossible to run the update without the full Regalia. He then wonders if there may have been a context-sensitive function that automatically updated the system. Suddenly though, Altera emerges from Zero Dark, and seemingly destroy Archimedes with Void Cells after easily breaking through his defense.

After Nero returns from her assault on Mare Origio, Archimedes reveals his survival. He tells Nero the Moon Cell chose her, as the victor of the Holy Grail War, to fight its only threat, Velber. He explains Velber is an alien threat from outside the galaxy that enters the system every 14,000 years. It is technologically similar to the Moon Cell, its circuits are made of Void Cells, it runs on spiritrons, and it keeps records of everything it destroys. During its last visit fourteen millennia ago, Velber nearly destroyed human civilization, and stole data from the Moon Cell upon hacking its core. Archimedes reveals the Regalia was created as a defense against Velber since Moon Cell was built to only survey and observe. He explains the previously planned purpose of the system update was for the Moon Cell to counter-hack Velber, completely close its core off, and insulates itself in an unbreakable digital wall. The Moon Cell anticipated Velber could adapt to that though, so it sought someone to fight against Velber with the Regalia. Archimedes calls Nero the Moon Cell's chosen protector, saying she has the task to defend the world. He then explains he held off telling Nero about Velber until she succeeded in uniting SE.RA.PH under her. After Nero makes her speech about protecting her people, Archimedes offers his fealty to her.

The next day, Archimedes offers to answer some uncertainties before Nero deploys her forces against Altera. He explains how Velber enters the Sol System every 14,000 years, and it destroys all civilization of a planet it passes. In Velber's last visit to Earth, 80% of the planet's surface was charred. During this time it accessed certain partitions of Moon Cell, which were quarantined and became known as the Zero Dark. Archimedes calls Velber the enemy of all life and intelligence, and he reveals Altera to be a servant of Velber. Next, he explains how the Regalia is a defensive mechanism against Velber. The Regalia temporarily grants its wielder special admin access, allowing the sovereign to use the Moon Cell's mana to infuse themselves with anti-Velber technology. He then confirms Nero's suspicious about the Attack Program she fought beforehand, revealing they're remnants of Velber's forces who escaped the Zero Dark. He then lies about how Altera is an Heroic Spirit chosen by Velber to lead its armies from the Zero Dark to conquer Moon Cell. He lies about not knowing Altera's past, saying she's concealing it with her skills or Noble Phantasm, and that he'll investigate the issue further. Speaking to Hakuno, Archimedes reveals the Titan that attacked them at the Moon Cell core is the same one that brought calamity to both Earth and and the Moon 14,000 years. He corrects Nero that Velber doesn't attack planets directy, rather sending its soldiers to destroy civilization. He confirms to Nero that the Titan awoken from its slumber in Zero Dark with Hakuno's approach, though he lies about it being near death and Velber looking for a replacement. He lies further that the Titan attacked him and Hakuno while they were registering the Regalia causing it and Hakuno to split into three pieces. He continues to lie that he helped Hakuno's Mind and Soul to escape, but failed to keep their Body out of the Titan's grasp. He lies even further that after the Titan died, Velber forced Body to summon Altera, who he says is helping Velber willingly, and keeping Body prisoner. He then confirms again to Nero that restoring the Regalia will stabilize Hakuno, though he doesn't know where Tamamo, who Soul accompanies, is. When Nero asks what will happen to Soul if Mind and Body are united, Archimedes explains Soul would eventually drawn to united Mind and Body, the "true" vessel of Hakuno. He explains if any of Hakuno's aspects, such as Mind or Soul were to disappear, their Body would eventually new versions of them, which retaining the memories of the originals up until the split. He then warns that if Altera was to kill both Mind and Soul, she would obtain the perfect Master since they're the Body.

When Nero proves victorious over Altera in Mare Carcer, Archimedes appears and congratulates her. He is curious how she won since Altera had a over 80% of victory compared to her victory over Tamamo, which was a mathematical certainty. He is surprised how Nero got Altera yield and took her as a subject instead of killing her. He call this decision to be unwise given the risks and lack of benefits. He then reveals himself to be a loyal servant of Velber, and attacks Nero, who defends against it. Calling it an honor to be called her adversary, Archimedes pushes her against the wall with his water jets as he call humans to be defectives that embrace emotion instead of reason. He fully recognizes the contradiction of him hating humans for their emotions, but he prioritize his goal over his feelings. He admonishes Nero for prioritizing her feelings instead of her goal, yet he calls her the one most suited among the Heroic Spirits to wield the Regalia. After stating he needs to break the Regalia, Archimedes forces Altera to transform into her original self, Sefar.

After Nero slays Sefar, Archimedes calls Mind the true wielder of the Regalia, though they both suffered a loss; the former losing their Body and the latter losing Sefar. Though frustrating at the loss, he accepts it and decides he'll have to start over. He ignores Nero's threats since he knows she used most of her Magical Energy to fight Sefar and the Regalia's power to survive Altera. Revealing Velber is returning, Archimedes slides into another parallel world to fulfill his task before the Quantum Time-Lock occurs.

Orchid Words[]

Like he did in previous world, Archimedes lies to Tamamo about him returning Hakuno to her palace following their encounter in the Moon Cell core. He later appear to lay praises upon her, and pledges allegiances to her. After being threatened by Tamamo, he tries to convince her to investigate and resolve the anomalies that recently manifested in SE.RA.PH. Tamamo ignores him to conquer SE.RA.PH for own selfish ends, which Archimedes prompt to warn Hakuno that Tamamo will do what she wants regardless if they agree or not. He again pleads with Hakuno and Tamamo to take action against the growing threat in SE.RA.PH at once. When Tamamo tells Hakuno that she cares about nothing but them, Archimedes realizes he can't force her into action if she refuses to.

The next day, Archimedes implores Tamamo to defeat Nero as soon as impossible, which she agrees with. He tells her that the Regalia can be restored when she defeats Nero, though he warns Nero established her own base deep inside her territory, so Tamamo will have to invade it. He also seems to understand Tamamo's plan to restore the Regalia. Later in the night, after Tamamo conquered Mare Mellum, Archimedes meets with Elizabeth alone in the throne room. He questions why she stays with a disrespectful queen when she could leave anytime she likes. He then removes the curse placed on her by Tamamo to torture her, and increases her spiritual value so she can properly wield the Regalia to avoid what happened in the previous world. Calling Elizabeth's concern for Mind ironic, he orders her to seize the Regalia and become the new Sovereign. He tells her that she can do whatever she wants after that, but she must be sure to fuse the all three pieces of the Regalia . Elizabeth questions why the Regalia needs to be fused if he's just going to break it, to which Archimedes answers that only breaking the complete Regalia will cause Moon Cell to shut down.

Later, as Tamamo congratulates her generals for their victories, Archimedes arrives to report that her continuous victories have weaken Nero's forces and Nero's base of Mare Aurum has been located. Later in Mare Aurum, he appears to congratulate Tamamo on her victory over Nero. His overt eagerness to fuse her and Nero's regalia makes her highly suspicious of him. Suddenly, Elizabeth ambushes Tamamo to steal Nero's Regalia, and Archimedes is delighted to see that Elizabeth is able wield it. He becomes utterly confused though like Hakuno and Tamamo when Elizabeth proceeds to eat the Regalia. As the overloaded Regalia tear Elizabeth apart, Archimedes observes it as the Regalia's auto-defense system against the unworthy working on the inside. He reminds himself though it isn't time to analyze as he ponders on what to do. After Elizabeth is transformed by her action, he severely reprimands her for destroying the Regalia again. Blaming it on him, Elizabeth proceeds to seemingly destroy Archimedes with Báthory Erzsébet.

Archimedes later appears in Mare Care following Sefar's demise by Tamamo, disappointed that she didn't do what he wanted her to do. Telling Tamamo to enjoy her peace while she can, he decides to slide into another world before the Quantum Time-Lock occurs; a process he'll repeat as much as needed. Elizabeth then appears, and he orders her to follow into the next world before proceeding with the sliding.

Dawn[]

Like he did in the Flame Poem arc, Archimedes establishes himself as Nero's adviser to achieve his goal et her to complete the Regalia for him. During Altera's invasion of Mare Aurum, he hacks into the Zero Dark's core, a process he tells Nero will take twelve minutes. They use Gawain as bait for Altera while they moved to their remaining forces to the Mare Carcer, where Archimedes continues to hack into Zero Dark's core.

After hacking into the Altera's cavern, he disables the Titan Altera while she was in isolation mode. During Altera's fight with Nero, he sneaks up on Hakuno and paralyazes them. After Altera destroys Nero, he reveals himself and tells her to fuse the three Regalia immediately. He commends Altera for achieving what her original self failed to do, even though she's an offshoot of the Titan. He then summons Hakuno to his side trapped in a cage of light, which hurts them when they touch it. He tells Altera to fuse the Regalia and destroy it to shut down Moon Cell to disable its jammer so Velber may return. He ponders if it may be more entertaining to reset ownership of the Regalia to himself. When Altera says she made her decision, Archimedes tells her that she only exists to destroy, so thought and decision-making are only hindrance to her design. He tells her again to fuse and destroy the Regalia to validate her existence, but she refuses to do so. In response to her refusal, Archimedes calls her emotions to be nothing more than mimicry, then tells her to give him the Regalia so he may destroy it. When Altera refuses to give him the Regalia as it belongs to Hakuno, he proceeds to torture Hakuno to coerce her into giving him the Regalia. Altera seemingly gives into Archimedes' coercion, but he ambushed by Gilgamesh's Gate of Babylon. He asks Gilgamesh is helping Altera since he only owned her a single favor, to which Gilgamesh answers he's saving Hakuno not Altera. Archimedes calls his answer illogical, but Gilgamesh puts it up to royal whimsy that Archimedes couldn't understand. After Gilgamesh leaves, Archimedes rants about how there's alway something stopping him in the end despite his repeated slides. He then fights Altera, but he's defeated and seemingly falls unconscious. When Altera decides to seal herself away forever in the cavern, Archimedes reveals he's still conscious despite having no mana left. He rants how emotion have again thwarted all reason, something that even Altera, an Anti-Cell of Velber, is affected by. Unable to bear illogicality of it all, he proceeds to force the Titan Altera to transform into Sefar. He tells Sefar to destroy the world as finds it to be a useless world tied to meaningless emotions not worth harvesting. He states he only has to slide into another world and bide his time again, and says Hakuno and Altera will die in despair before leaving.

Golden Poem[]

Like he did the Flame Poem arc and the previous, Archimedes tries to establish himself as Nero's adviser to get her to complete the Regalia for him. Hakuno however, with the transferred memories of the Body from the previous world, reveals his true plan to destroy the complete Regalia to disable the Moon Cell's jammer that prevent Velber's return. When Hakuno reveals him as a servant of Velber, Archimedes wonders if he failed to erase their residual memories, but realizes that isn't the case. Stating Hakuno has no way of knowing those memories, he aks them how they found about the jammer. Hakuno reveals they possess the Body's memories from the previous world, which causes Archimedes to ponder how that's possible. Knowing Hakuno doesn't possess the ability to slide and Moon Cell didn't send them, Archimedes dismisses the possibility of the memories coming from any the previous worlds. He is somewhat amused that the Body successful transfer their memories to another world, a feat that neither the Mind nor the Soul thought of. He decides to kill both Hakuno and Nero, then go to manipulate Tamamo into completing the Regalia. After he's defeated by Nero, Archimedes realizes the Body used the complete Regalia to transfer only their memories. Mocking their sacrifice as a failure, he dismisses Hakuno's declaration that they'll stop him and Velber since he'll just manipulate someone else to complete the Regalia. He then leaves stating that Hakuno can't avoid the inevitable as long as Sefar exists.

Later in the Zero Dark, Archimedes secretly watches the battle between Nero and Altera, as well as the following conversation. He reveals his presence to Hakuno and Nero after Nero given the Sword of Mars by Altera before she disappeared following the Body. He is delighted to see that the Regalia is at last complete and that the Hero Altera is gone as well. He confirms Hakuno's suspicious that he was watching everything in secret, mocking Altera and the Body's final moments along with their wish to free Altera from her fate. Stating Hakuno's efforts to save Altera and stop him ended in failure, he reveals that he disabled the Titan Altera sleeping in the cavern so she can't interfere with his plan to control the Ark of the Stars. Revealing the Ark is already under his control, Archimedes makes it plummet to crash through SE.RA.PH and corrupt the Moon Cell's core directly. He then fights Nero, but he is defeated. He wonders how he lost despite him using the most precise amount of energy from Velber to destroy her. He dismisses Nero's statement that he lost to her power as a Hero Spirit, believing that Velber is greater. He then reveals that the Ark is still falling, stating nothing on Earth can destroy it. However, to everyone's surprise, Titan Altera appears to stop the Ark's descent. Archimedes angrily asks how she escaped his Anti-Fortress Binding Noble Phantasm, to which she reveals Elizabeth freed her by mistake trying to drink her blood for her power. Infuriated at the absent Elizabeth, Archimedes is unable to comprehend how her actions go against his calculations despite her being a servant of Velber like himself. Calming himself down, he enters the Ark and proceeds to use it to drop the Zero Dark on the Moon Cell's core. When Nero, as Saber Venus, prepares to destroy the Ark's core, Archimedes protects it with multidimensional defensive shield, but she penetrates the shield with Charitas Domus Aurora and destroys the core.

Alone in the Zero Dark, Archimedes confirms the Ark to be completely destroyed. He is disappointed that the Quantum Time Lock has already occured, but accepts he can no longer slide to try to reverse the situation. Accepting humanity's victory over him, Archimedes states that Velber itself will eventually return.

Fate/EXTELLA LINK[]

The Archimedes that appears is not the same one who appeared in the previous game. As proof, he lacks the markings that were branded onto his body by Velber due to his close contact with Velber 02's Core.

He's solely focused on maintaining the Moon Cell's functions, as is his duty. Hence, he doesn't care what Karl intends to do, just so long as he does not interfere with the Moon Cell's functions.

Abilities[]

Archimedes cannot participate in the Holy Grail War due to his position as head of security, but he can still fight even if he cannot compete for the Holy Grail.[2]

Adjacent Movement[]

Adjacent Movement(Sliding) (並行移動(スライド), Heikō Idō(Suraido)?) is a privilege permitted to Archimedes as a System Administrator (システム管理者, Shisutemu Kanrisha?) of SE.RA.PH, which permits the browsing of Quantum Realities (量子世界, Ryōshi Sekai?), and, within such, the authority to enact transportation (移動権限, idō kengen?, lit. "Authority of Transportation"). A capacity that permits movement between Adjacent Realities (並行世界, Heikō Sekai?).

Originally, the capacity permitted only that browsing be conducted. Even within the domain of SE.RA.PH, the projection of the Consciousness (意識, Ishiki?) and the direct transportation of the Corpus (肉体, Nikutai?) are categorically impossible. Per established record, the Corpus is unable to withstand Temporal Retrogression (時間の逆行, Jikan no Gyakkō?) or the bypassing of The Walls of the Worlds (世界附の壁, Sekai-fu no Kabe?), and collapses if such is attempted.

It was the corruption (浸食, shinshoku?, lit. "corrosion / erosion") of The Wandering Star (遊星, Yūsei?) that permitted Archimedes and Dark Eliza to do so; in becoming profaned by the Spiritrons (Cells) of the Wandering Star, their Existential Integrity (存在強度, Sonzai Kyōdo?, lit. "Existential Strength") was enhanced.

As in the events of the present time, existences such as Archimedes and Dark Eliza were submitted for recording by the Moon Cell, and Sliding will be prospectively disallowed to them as well. The period of time wherein "he wasn't yet identified as an accomplice to the Wandering Star" was to Archimedes the best opportunity by which to maneuver as a saboteur - but even so, his plot came to be foiled.

Incidentally, in the event that Archimedes or Dark Eliza slide into a different world, if there exists a reality similar to the World (Route) of destination, their "analogue" in the World of destination is displaced into the similar reality - merging into the particular existence that is identical to them. In the event that there exists for a given timeline no reality that is similar, a merging into a stronger "self" is enacted.[3]

Machines of Slaughter[]

The various and sundry inventions of Archimedes. They were each created with some other use in mind, but ended up being turned into tools of war. His inventions are born not of magecraft, but from his own ingenuity.[1]

For example, the Archimedes' ScrewWP (Syrakousón Méthodos or Syracusan Method) made it possible to create the giant warship SyracusiaWP. In short, it's a screw pump used to irrigate water (Syracusia sailed only once, to berth at Alexandria, where she was later given to Ptolemy - Ptolemaios III EuergetesWP of Egypt - and renamed "Alexandria".) The ancient Greek ship is said to have used a screw-shaped mechanism to expel water from the ship. These screws are also said to have been used in the Hanging Gardens of Babylon.[1]

Archimedes expounded on the principle of the spiral, which his screw employs, in the treatise "On SpiralsWP", which he addressed to Dositheus of Pelusium, a student under Conon of SamosWP. It is known as one of the first considerations of a curved line that includes a spiral in mathematics of the ancient Greek era.[1]

Another invention was the Claw of ArchimedesWP (Syrakousón Harpage or Syracusan Plunderer), a giant weaponized crane. Archimedes and his associates employed many variations of this device in war. It was originally a machine set on the seaside, used to destroy ships that tried to land in Syracuse. Variations on the Claw could lift invading ships, using a pendular motion to throw them afar, or capture them by throwing a net.[1]

Finally, there's the Scale of Archimedes (Wizard of the Balances), a transportation device that would move even Heaven and Earth if it had the minimum required tools and output to do so. Archimedes theorized about levers and Balance in "The Method of Mechanical TheoremsWP" and "On the Equilibrium of Planes".[1]

According to Pappus of AlexandriaWP, who flourished in the otherwise stagnant period of mathematical studies in the fourth century AD, it was Archimedes' work on levers that promoted his famous quote: "Give me a place to stand, and I will move the Earth." Plutarch, as well, claimed that Archimedes was able to use the pulley and scale to transport objects.[1]

Because of this, Archimedes is called "The Wizard of Balance" within the world of mathematics. In fact, a certain study published on the works of Archimedes, by Kyoritsu Shuppan Co., Ltd., is called "The Wizard of Balance - The Numbers of Archimedes".[1]

  • Technique Elucidation (E Rank): Technique Elucidation (術理解明, Jutsu Rikaimei?) is a Skill to interpret and restore more or less anything that can be called a formula. Archimedes can not just repair magecraft, but also damaged circuits and even crests. An esoterica among esoterica even in an age when magecraft still existed. But completely useless in combat.[1]
  • Aptitude for Slaughter (Tools) (A Rank): Aptitude for Slaughter (Tools) (殺戮技巧(道具), Satsuriku Gikō (Dōgu)?) is a Skill possessed by Heroic Spirits fitting the Assassin or Berserker classes. Implements used gain a plus modifier in their damage dealt against "humans". A condition that Archimedes has even though he doesn't want it. It is like a sort of curse.[1]

Noble Phantasm[]

Archimedes' Noble Phantasm is Katoptron Katho Phlegon, the optical weapon used to burn the warships anchored in Syracuse's shore in Archimedes' legend.[1] Archimedes also possesses an Anti-Fortress Binding Noble Phantasm which he used to seal Titan Altera to get control of the Ark of the Stars. Furthermore, Archimedes is able to set up multidimensional defenses over the Velber's Ark.[4]

Development[]

Creation and Conception[]

Archimedes was designed by Arco Wada in Fate/EXTELLA.

  3. [v] Extella Material - Adjacent Movement

    Adjacent Movement [Circumstances]

Sliding. A privilege permitted to Archimedes as a System Administrator of SE.RA.PH, which permits the browsing of Quantum Realities (量子世界, Ryōshi Sekai?), and, within such, the authority to enact transportation (移動権限, idō kengen?, lit. "Authority of Transportation").
A capacity that permits movement between Adjacent Realities (並行世界, heikou sekai?).

It was the taint (浸食, shinshoku?, lit.

As in the events of the present work, existences such as Archimedes and Dark Eliza were submitted to record by Moon Cell, Sliding will be prospectively disallowed to them as well.
The period of time wherein "he wasn't yet identified as an accomplice to the Wandering Star" was to Archimedes the best opportunity by which to maneuver to as a saboteur -- but even so, his plot came to be foiled.

Incidentally, in the event that Archimedes or Dark Eliza slide into a different world, if there exists a reality similar to World (Route) of destination, their "analogue" in the World of destination is displaced into the similar reality -- merging into the particular existence that is identical to them. (Complicated ...)
If there exists no reality that is similar, a merging into a stronger "self" is enacted.
