Artoria Pendragon (Alter) (アルトリア・ペンドラゴン・オルタ?), Class Name Saber Alter (セイバー・オルタ, Seibā Oruta?), is the Saber-class Servant of Sakura Matou in the Fifth Holy Grail War of Fate/stay night's Heaven's Feel route. She is a changed version of Artoria Pendragon after being consumed and blackened by the mud from the Shadow. She is one of the Servants summoned by Ritsuka Fujimaru in the Grand Orders of Fate/Grand Order.
Profile[]
Identity[]
Also called Artoria Alter (アルトリア・オルタ, Arutoria Oruta?) and better known as Arthur Pendragon/King Arthur. In history, he/she is a different figure that may not have been known to others as possibly being the legendary King Arthur himself. Accompanied with her inversion, the holy sword Excalibur is also dyed in the attribute of evil, turning into a jet black sword. It seems that Excalibur, a sword gifted from the fairies, has the possibility of possessing both attributes of good and evil as well; there exists Vivian, the Fairy of the Lake who possesses the attribute of good, and Morgan, who exists as the antithesis to Vivian that possesses the attribute of evil. In addition, in Artoria Alter's Fate/Grand Order Interlude Vortigern, who was criticized as the "look-alike of Vortigern, the late Vile King of ancient times" from a certain person (Servant), was a figure who usurped the throne of Britain and was the older brother of King Uther, the father of Arthur.[1]
Appearance[]
Corrupted by Angra Mainyu, Artoria Alter is vastly different from her normal self. She is also called Black Saber (黒セイバー, Kuro Seibā?).
The results of her alteration is not only within Artoria Alter's interior but also extends to her outward appearance. The color of her skin becomes pale, and the pupil of her eyes that were at first concealed behind a black visor during the moment of her summoning becomes golden from her original green eye color as well.[1]
Because the armor she wears was dyed jet black and grew in weight due to changing into a heavier armor, its power has increased more than normally.[1][2]
- In Fate/hollow ataraxia, she wears her casual clothes; a gothic dress called Alter Gothic Dress (オルタ・ゴシックドレス, Oruta Goshikku Doresu?).
Personality[]
A different aspect of the King of Knights devoted to cruelty, greatly unlike the case of the normal Artoria. She is referred to as Saber Alter.[1] A behavior without futility, a cold-hearted personality that makes Artoria seem like a different person, but if one is to carefully come into contact with her, they might notice that what lies at the basis is still the same.[2]
Artoria Alter's personality changes vastly from her normal self upon being corrupted by Angra Mainyu, but she cannot be called a villain. She is more of a dark hero who is still an idealist clinging to her own values even after being blackened.[6]
After taking in by the hatred of the curse, Artoria Alter comes to the realization that the duty of a hero is to be hated and ostracized, that a hero's only duty is to cut down foes using all their strength. She believes that she was prepared for such an outcome upon drawing Caliburn, and decides to entrust her blade to All the World's Evils. While she still takes her duty as king seriously, believing it is her obligation to those whose lives were lost because of her, she no longer believes in the ideals set for herself and her people. The end was concluded long ago, after all her prayers and glory vanished on the hill in CamlannWP.
While alive, Artoria did not fall into the path of evil even once, but she too had doubts, inner conflicts, hatred towards herself and grief towards the surroundings.[2] This figure, influenced by the curse of the Holy Grail, is someone that had such issues hidden within her raised to the surface and caused her "policy" to go inverse.[1][2]
Because a section of her character's attributes has been inverted, the basis of Artoria Alter's character speak words and display deeds like those of a "tyrant's", which is the exact opposite of her usual character, but there is no change in her goals and ideals themselves, and it seems she shows a bit of her original self as her feelings towards the people who are close to her have been left behind and intact, although barely.[1][2] The usual Artoria persisted in being chaste for the sake of her ideals, but this Artoria approves tyrannical rule for the sake of her ideals.[2]
Having been violated by the curse of the Holy Grail, this is a side of the King of Knights, a tyrant that persisted in being heartless. Maybe, the "ideal king" that King Arthur pursued was something like this after all.[2]
Maybe because her Magic Core goes outside the scale, but at any rate, Artoria Alter is a Servant that eats a lot. The dragon is a glutton.[2] In addition, even her food preferences, which could be regarded as her identity, have changed: she spits out cooking with courteous, elaborate, abstruse tastes as bad and chews down large quantities of junk food.[1][2] A new identity for Artoria who came into contact with the foundation of foreign cultures, as if food culture has become a Heroic Spirit. Concerning her who has an evil heart that is outside of the norm, meals become nothing but refreshing fuel, and it seems the manner of being able to eat food in a simple way is desirable for her.[1] Awful eating habits, but she herself seems greatly satisfied, so maybe this can be called a form of happiness.[2]
Concerning her motive on what to wish for on the Holy Grail and what rouses her to pursue it, it is no different from Artoria's. However, affirming her strength to the point of committing atrocities, she not only responds to the desires of a Master wishing for a strong Servant because of their objective to fight and save the world, but she responds to also do battle against the Master's more repulsive enemies and the more powerful adversaries, as well as to train the Master in improving their skills. Her methods surely differs, but her approach to guiding and understanding the Master is certainly Artoria Pendragon's. In addition, in the world of Fate/Grand Order, her existence as a Servant is separate from Artoria Pendragon's, and Artoria is no longer consumed by the blackening caused by the curse of the Holy Grail. Probably due to the fact that Artoria Alter only exist in the Heaven's Feel timeline where Shirou chooses Sakura and that Artoria herself has already ascended to Avalon during the Fate timeline which was confirmed by Merlin himself.[1][7]
Artoria Alter is mostly emotionless towards the situation of Shirou, Rin, and Sakura. While she seems to hold favor for Shirou and Rin coming out victorious, she is largely apathetic towards the entire situation. In the case of the battle going wrong, she doesn't care about the victor and can only hold a slight amount of pity towards those left alive. She feels a connection to Sakura as someone who has felt similar despair.

She simply states it is her victory, and compares him to all of her other enemies who had risked their lives and died meaninglessly.

Fate/stay night[]
Heaven's Feel[]
In the Heaven's Feel route, the first three days are the same as the Fate route, but the damage Saber receives from Berserker does not weigh heavily on Shirou's mind. After Saber gives her the explanation of the basics of the Holy Grail War, the topic of Illya and the Einzberns is brought up. Saber contemplates on explaining due to Shirou's confusion over Illya's hostility, instead telling Shirou to seek out the answers from Kotomine Kirei even though she wishes to have little contact with the priest. This line of conversation leads to the revelation of her connection to Kiritsugu in the previous war and her reason for disliking Kirei as a former enemy Master. Despite her dislike, she firmly believes Kirei is someone who will answer any questions clearly asked of him. As they head to the church, she suggests that Shirou not reveal the same Servant was summoned twice. After he comes back out after learning the answers, Shirou finds Saber's worried reaction funny, and also causes him to wish to reaffirm their contract as allies.
In the movie adaptation, Shirou isn't carried back home following the encounter with Berserker, instead he's lied on a park bench while he heals. Saber doesn't explain the basics of the war, only convincing Shirou not to endanger his life again. Shirou and Saber's visitation to the church occurs after their encounter with Rider, which follows their encounter with Berserker. There Shirou learns from Saber of her connection to Kiritsugu in the previous war, and Kiritsugu's role in said war from Kirei. After he comes back out learning the answers, Shirou and Saber properly introduce themselves, and affirm their contract as allies.
Shirou and Saber decide to patrol together at night, and then give a false explanation to Taiga and Sakura about why Saber is staying at the Emiya Residence. They begin their patrols that night, and Saber senses that someone is being drained by a Servant. They come upon Rider and Shinji Matou preying upon a woman for energy. Saber quickly engages and dispatches Rider easily, but Zouken Matou appears before they can deal with Shinji. Shirou is eventually appeased with Zouken taking charge of Shinji, although Saber is reluctant to let Shirou near him due to him being inhuman. Although she wishes to continue fighting, she stays her hand to help save the woman's life, and they bring her to the church for healing. As they discuss the situation, Shirou makes a clear resolution to end the war, and Saber says that she will never betray his trust.
In the movie adaptation, the encounter with Rider occurs after Shirou and Saber's encounter with Berserker while they're heading home. The woman that Rider is feeding on is Ayako Mitsuzuri. Saber doesn't say anything following Rider's defeat when Shinji is torturing Rider. She doesn't say anything about Zouken, only keeping Shirou away from him. After Shinji and Zouken leave, Shirou becomes curious about Illya's hostility, to which Saber responds that Kirei could provide the answers. Shirou decides to do just that as he carries the unconscious Ayako with him.
The next morning, Saber and Shirou argue about where she should sleep and him continuing to go to school normally despite the potential danger without her being able to be by his side due to being unable to enter spiritual form. After Shirou returns home, he finds Saber with Taiga, and the discussion of their sleeping arrangements leads to a misunderstanding. They continue their patrols that night, planning to check Ryuudou Temple due to information about a Master and Servant being there from Rin Tohsaka. Saber agrees with a direct attack, but they find little upon arriving at the mountain other than Saber briefly seeing the katana of the recently killed Assassin before it fades away. As they make their way into the temple, they find Caster standing over the body of Souichirou Kuzuki. Before Saber can charge, Shirou warns her of the ominous feeling he gets from Rule Breaker, but she attacks in anger after believing Caster to have killed her own Master. Caster then regains her composure and attacks Saber, only to be easily cut down as Saber negates her spells. They decide to contact Kotomine to heal the residents of the temple and return home for the night.
In the movie adaptation, Shirou and Saber do not investigate Ryuudou Temple until the movie's climax. As such Saber doesn't see Assassin's disappearing katana nor does she kill Caster as punishment for killing her own Master. The killing of both Kuzuki and Caster is instead done by True Assassin.
Shirou is left sick the next day due to Rider, as Sakura's Servant, using Breaker Gorgon on him and taking his energy.[10]
Fate/hollow ataraxia[]
Saber Alter appears in the prologue as a Servant of the Edelfelt sisters in the recreated Fifth Holy Grail War. She, along with the original Saber, kills both Bazett and Avenger.
Saber Alter appears again in a comedic scenario when Shirou plucks her ahoge in an attempt to find her Reverse Scale. After getting a new set of clothes from Rin, Saber eats a meal cooked by Shirou, but she spits it out, much to Shirou's great dismay. However, Saber Alter pleasantly eats the hamburgers made by Shirou at Rin's suggestion.
Fate/unlimited codes[]
Saber Alter is known as the Dark-Tainted Tyrant (闇に染まりし暴君, Yami ni Somarishi Bōkun?). Her story begins after Saber is corrupted by Dark Sakura, realizing that the hatred now corrupting her is the true form of the Holy Grail she was seeking. She decides to take up All the World's Evils, entrusting her blade to it. Sakura asks her how it feels to be reborn as her Servant, and Saber says that it feels like she has awoken from a very long dream, finally prepared to face the reality she had long since ignored. Sakura is surprised that someone of Saber's stature conforms to her so well. Saber believes that, as a king who believed in the ideals of her people and then sacrificed herself for those ideals, she is in the best position to truly understand despair. She decides to make her sword Sakura's own in order to sow the hopelessness she desires.
Saber Alter eventually encounters Shirou, telling him that she will destroy all who pass. She believes such a warning to be pointless considering that he would never simply walk away from the fight. He notes that Saber has yet to make a move to kill him, but she simply refutes that she will not attack until he steps before her. Upon taking his battle stance with Kanshou and Bakuya, she asks if he does not intend to copy her sword instead. Such things do not matter, as she is simply surprised that he has taken arms. Considering it to be an act of hostility, they battle with her coming out as the victor.
After having collected all the Servants within Sakura, she notes that Saber Alter has been draining twice the magical energy from her for some time. Saber Alter is confused, until her original personality manifests itself. She claims that she has not yet rid herself of her old self, and her old self claims that she is what she would have been like on the wrong path. Saber Alter believes that is twisted logic, and asks that even if she were to be defeated, would her old self be able to handle the fact that Shirou was killed by her own hands. She tells her old self that she will not remain, that she and her ideals will be given eternal despair.
Saber emerges victorious over her old self, and she tells the King of Knights not to cry, lest even she may tear up. Her old self asks how it could end as such, but she simply says that it is not the end. It had already concluded long ago, all of her prayers and glory vanishing on the hill in Camlann. As her old self fades, Saber Alter tells her to close her eyes before true despair, the birth of Angra Mainyu, presents itself to her. Saber Alter says to sleep soundly, for she is the light inside of her.

Fate/Grand Order[]
Singularity F: Fuyuki[]
Artoria Alter is a Servant in the prologue "The Contaminated City in Flames" who is guarding the center of Fuyuki City's Greater Grail and has a strong link to it. She appears as a Heroic Spirit in Fate/Grand Order, and it seems that Artoria was cursed by the Holy Grail in this prologue.[1] She received a Holy Grail from Lev Lainur Flauros, and she tried to maintain this Singularity by restarting the Holy Grail War, thus bringing unnecessary trouble for Lev.[11] She fights Ritsuka Fujimaru and Mash Kyrielight and is defeated by them. (In First Order, it was Cu that defeated her.)
Miss Almost Weekly Santa Alter[]
By using Excalibur Morgan as a jet engine on sleigh, Santa Alter scares off her reindeer. Needing reindeer to pull her sleigh, she summons Ritsuka to a snowy field to be said reindeer. Once they arrive, she tells them she wishes to deliver presents to all to express her daily gratitude. She then explains why she summoned them, and the two set off to deliver the presents.
As they towards their first destination, Santa Alter opens a letter from Darius, but the writing is too black and smeared for her to read it. So she decides to figure what present to give him when she meets him. Arriving at her destination, Santa Alter takes notice of the Phantom of the Opera and Lu Bu‘s lamentations, and decides to give them presents out of pity. She asks them where Darius is, prompting Darius III, who she mistook for a candle tree, to call out to her. The Phantom, Lu Bu, and Darius then attack her. After defeating them, Santa Alter asks if they learned their lesson, and gives them their presents.
Flying to her next destination, Santa Alter reads aloud a letter from Marie that states she would like a present that you’ll make her two friends stop fight with another. Chastising Marie for asking her for such an impossible present, Santa Alter says that Marie should pick out a present herself if she wishes to bring her friends together. She then goes to tell the story of how she got two knights to stop fighting in public when Astolfo confronts her. Astolfo signals Marie Antoinette down below to fire at Santa Alter. Marie shoots down Santa Alter, causing the latter to crash-land on the field below. There Santa Alter fights Marie and Chevalier d’Eon, considering both to be thieves. After defeating them, she asks Marie if she is the same one that sent the letter, which Marie confirms. Seeing that the situation was a misunderstanding, she hands out presents to Marie and D’Eon. She then takes her leave, ignoring the eagerly waiting Astolfo. As she flies off, Santa Alter tells Astolfo that he doesn’t get a present since he failed to help at Orleans, but she does throw an expired Halloween pumpkin at him.
Walking through a snowy field, Santa Alter states that her next delivery is for Jean Kay, who lives in a nearby cave because of her profession as an assassin. Ritsuka asks her if she means Jing Ke, to which she admits she doesn’t speak Chinese. Santa Alter then hears a strange sound coming from the cave. She and Ritsuka follow it inside to find it is Martha punching a sandbag. Santas Alter asks her about Jing Ke, but Martha tells her and Ritsuka to leave after having some warm soup. Refusing to do so, Santa Alter asks Ushiwakamaru when a drunk Jing Ke arrives. Ushiwakamaru explains Jing Ke’s drunkenness is the result of drinking since a traumatic event ten days ago. Saddened that she couldn’t arrive sooner, Santa Alter tries to deliver her presents, but Martha, Ushiwakamaru, and Jing Ke attack her when she says she is Santa Claus. After defeating them, she asks them about their issue with Santa Claus. She is told that another Santa Claus confiscated their belongings after they failed to pay for their presents. Expressing grievance over their story, Santa Alter gives the women their presents. Surprised that another Santa Claus could deceive them, she leaves with Ritsuka for their next destination.
Due to a storm, Santa Alter leaves Ritsuka and her sleigh behind in the sky. She lands on a ship being occupied by EMIYA, David, and Robin Hood. David boasts being the most victorious king, so Santa Alter decides to test that claim before handing out presents. After defeating David along with EMIYA and Robin, Santa Alter tells them she came in response to a letter. Robin confesses he wrote the letter, for which Santa Alter tells him not to be embarrassed as he has worked hard. After praising Robin for supporting his Master from the shadows, and criticizing EMIYA for spoiling his Master, she gives presents to David and Robin. She then tells the group that their real present is being prepared elsewhere and will arrive soon before leaving. Returning to her sleigh, she hears Elizabeth Báthory performing a concert for the three Archers. She is shocked to see that the next letter is from Gilgamesh.
Arriving at Gilgamesh’s house, Santa Alter thinks about him waiting for her arrival, but returns to her sleigh and takes the night off. As she thinks about the food they could eat on their day off, Santa Alter and Ritsuka are drawn into the inner world of Nursery Rhyme and Jack the Ripper. Hearing of their loneliness, she believes the two are the spirits of young girls that died while ignorant of love, further believing they gained a sense of self during Christmas due to their loneliness. However, since neither wrote letters to Santa, she cannot give them presents, but she’ll do so if they defeat her. Nursery Rhyme and Jack lose, but out of pity, Santa Alter exaggeratedly pretends that they defeated her instead. Congratulating them on their “victory”, she gives several presents to Jack and Nursery Rhyme, calling them merely the spoils of their “victory”. She then gives each of them their individual presents. She proceeds to leave, but is stopped by Jack, who thanks her with Nursery Rhyme. They tell her that another Santa visited before, but left telling them to wait for the real Santa. Returning to the sky, Santa Alter decides to punish the other Santa before delivering her last present.
Santa Alter soon confronts the other Santa, Julius Caesar. He tells her and Ritsuka about how the others mistaking for Santa allowed him to deceive them. After hearing, Santa Alter decides to kill Caesar for the sake of Santa Claus. She defeats him in battle, but he escapes before she can finish him off. With the matter of the other Santa resolved, Santa Alter goes to deliver her last present.
Heading towards her final delivery, Santa Alter states that the last letter is from an Alter Servant like her, who requested a board game everyone can have fun playing together. Arriving at the location, Santa Alter is confronted by Jeanne Alter, who threatens Ritsuka for her defeat in Orleans. Santa Alter is surprised Jeanne Alter wrote a letter to Santa, that she wants a present despite her hatred, and her handwriting is easy to read despite being illiterate. Jeanne Alter explains how she learned to write. She asks Santa Alter why she’s calls herself Santa, and tells her to bring out the real Santa. Santa Alter tells her she has delivered many presents despite her not being a saint, saying she originally became Santa to throw Jeanne Alter’s present in her face. Believing Santa Alter to be pranking her thinking that she’s lonely, Jeanne Alter shows she was playing a board game with the anguished spirits of Pierre Cauchon. Santa Alter sees her cheat to regain first place, and tells her she won’t make any friends nor become a Servant if she doesn’t repent her ways. Jeanne Alter doesn’t want to be a Servant however, and she doesn’t want anyone’s help, especially Ritsuka’s. Hearing this, Santa Alter decides to fight Jeanne Alter, who fights along with spirits of Pierre. After defeating her, Santa Alter states that Jeanne Alter won’t change no matter how many times she loses, and that she must be defeated mentally. She then gives Jeanne Alter her present, which makes Jeanne Alter resolve to build up her Spirit Origin and become a Servant before returning to purgatory with the spirits of Pierre. With her final delivery complete, Santa Alter thanks Ritsuka for their hard work, and grants them the chance to summon her.
The Second Generation is Alter-chan ~2016 Christmas~[]
Santa Alter attacks Alter Lily with Excalibur Morgan when the latter sneaks into her room to demand her sack, thinking she was Jeanne Alter. She goes back to sleep, deciding to ignore that Alter Lily’s voice was younger. Later, she enters Ritsuka’s room and speaks with them and Jeanne d'Arc alone upon seeing Alter Lily. She reveals that Alter Lily will disappear in her current state. In order to maintain her body as Servant, she needed to become something. However, Alter Lily wants to become Santa, even though children shouldn’t. Thus, Ritsuka devises a plan that will help Alter Lily realize her desire under the guise of making her Santa. After returning from their discussion, Santa Alter decides to give her sack to Alter Lily if she proves her worth as Santa in the combat simulator. Alter Lily barely passes, so Santa Alter gives her her sack.
Santa Alter later deduces Jeanne wishes to see the sea, so she asks Nursery Rhyme and Jack to grant it. Nursery Rhyme and Jack grant that wish when they bring Alter Lily to the sea, which Santa Alter and the others bear witness to. Santa Alter thought Alter Lily would realize her own desires after delivering two or three presents, but she underestimated her stubbornness. The plan would’ve taken a different approach if Alter Lily gave up after an obstacle or two, but the latter continued to trudge forward. She, Jeanne, and Amakusa Shirou then tell Mash that it wasn’t them who conceived the plan. After Ritsuka is revealed to be the mastermind, Santa Alter reveals it was also their plan to make it look like Llamrei II’s engine broke after it crashed. However, no one told Mash about the plan since she cannot lie. Santa Alter also confesses Romani Archaman was in on the plan. She then hides with everyone expect Ritsuka when Alter Lily comes to talk with them.
Subspecies Singularity I: Shinjuku[]
Artoria Alter establishes her own territory in Shinjuku, following her summoning after forming a truce with Jeanne Alter to leave each other alone. She established a burger shop as her hideout and adopts a stray dog she names Cavall II. At some point, she fought Baal under the guise of James Moriarty. She learns he and Hessian Lobo are members of an alliance of four Servants that rule Shinjuku, the Phantom Demon Alliance. She tried to investigate the other members when she encountered Edmond Dantès, who told her to help Ritsuka.
Artoria Alter later rescues Ritsuka on her motorcycle while Moriarty holds Hessian Lobo off.[12] After escaping, she tries to take them to her hideout when they’re stopped by Cavall II. She denies he’s her dog, but still brings him and Ritsuka into her hideout. There she gives Cavall II food while reprimanding him for leaving on his own again. After Ritsuka tells her about Moriarty’s heroics, Artoria Alter reveals she fought him before. Though he was exceptionally stronger, his personality differed, and subordinates occupied him. Artoria Alter then tells the others about the Alliance, of which Moriarty and Hessian Lobo are part of. She decides to go with Ritsuka to rendezvous with Moriarty, while also warning that Moriarty may betray them given the city’s nature. Ritsuka recalls they’re to rendezvous at Shinjuku Station, but it’s large and labyrinthian. Leonardo da Vinci decides to narrow down Moriarty’s location the best she can.[13]
The next morning, Artoria Alter commands Cavall II to guard the hideout before leaving for Shinjuku Station with Ritsuka. But while guiding Ritsuka through the station, Artoria Alter is unnerved by the empty campsites of the ruffians that usually occupy the station. She hypothesizes someone cleaned it up so Ritsuka wouldn’t flee, but they didn’t account for a guide. She then notices and defeats the perpetrators, Hornets. Afterward, she helps Moriarty with his own Hornets. She threatens him, believing him to be the same one she fought before, and demands to know his True Name and Noble Phantasm. She also asks him why he risked his life to save Ritsuka even though they’re not contracted. Ritsuka believes it is because he is a hero. Artoria Alter realizes Moriarty isn’t the same one she fought before but demands to know who is. Moriarty reveals his True Name was stolen, along with most of his power. He agrees with Da Vinci that he was split into good and evil, suspecting he’s the good half. He then deduces Artoria Alter’s True Name merely from her swordsmanship and demeanor, shocking Artoria Alter. The group then returns to the hideout.[13]
A sudden phone call alerts the group the next morning. Answering the phone, Ritsuka learns from Edmond that EMIYA Alter and his soldiers are heading for Jeanne Alter’s hideout at Shinjuku National Park. Artoria Alter is perturbed that Jeanne Alter established her territory with no regard for others. She contemplates tying her to the back of her motorcycle and riding the Metro Expressway. Moriarty reveals Jeanne Alter attacked him when he snuck into her territory, which Artoria Alter affirms she’d do the same. Regardless, the group leaves to save Jeanne Alter.[14]
They soon arrive at her location after she barely escaped from EMIYA Alter. After swapping insults, Jeanne Alter asks Artoria Alter why she came since they had a truce to leave each other alone. Artoria Alter answers that is no longer the case, boasting she has a Master now to the former’s disbelief. She then accuses Jeanne Alter of trying to poach Mash, claiming Mash is her knight since Galahad is possessing her. Jeanne Alter however counters Mash isn’t Galahad. She then tries to attack Moriarty, believing he's the same one who grievously wounded her. But she is convinced he isn’t and joins the group despite her mistrust.[14] Artoria Alter doesn’t approve though, and the two argue until Jeanne Alter leaves to get her own set of modern clothing after noticing the former’s. While she searches the ruins of a boutique, the group is attacked by thugs and their so-called Super Chimera. They kill the thugs but Hessian Lobo appears and kills the Super Chimera in a single bite. Jeanne Alter returns and unleashes her Noble Phantasm. Artoria Alter reprimands her for nearly killing them and denies giving her the signal when she realizes it was Moriarty. Just according to Moriarty’s plan, the flames of Jeanne Alter’s Noble Phantasm prevent Hessian Lobo from escaping. The group fights him until he escapes. The Alters realize Moriarty intends to target Phantom of the Opera and Christine Daaé next. They then fight until Moriarty convinces them to wait until Phantom and Christine are dead.[15]
Returning to the hideout, Artoria Alter tells Jeanne Alter to enter spirit form or leave if she doesn’t like it. After another call from Edmond, the group learns the other Moriarty is the leader of the Alliance,[15] further exacerbating the Alters' distrust of their own Moriarty. In response, Moriarty says they should defeat Phantom so he can gain their trust. He warns, though, that they'd be killed if they were to attack Phantom directly, as the 200 Coloraturas stationed in Kabukicho would severely outnumber them. Artoria Alter contemplates using Excalibur Morgan until Moriarty reveals Shinjuku’s magical energy comparable to the Age of Gods would reduce it significantly. Moriarty then asks the others to bring him a Coloratura, which he’ll use to observe Kabukicho.[16]
Leaving the hideout, Artoria Alter assumes Edmond knows Moriarty’s true identity since he told her not to trust him. The group then notices Coloratura kidnapping people, so they go in to capture one. After capturing a Coloratura and helping the people escape, the group return to the hideout. There they learn Coloraturas are constructed from humans. Moriarty reveals he rigged the Coloratura with a bomb. Said bomb will be triggered when the Coloratura returns to Kabukicho with the others at their regular intervals. The group will then take advantage of the confusion to kill Phantom and Christine. After Moriarty finishes rigging the Coloratura and gives the detonator to Ritsuka, the group head for Kabukicho.[16]
Placing the rigged Coloratura with the others, Moriarty orders the Alters to take their positions. Ten minutes later, the bomb is detonated. The resulting explosion scatters the Coloraturas, so the Alters move in to destroy them. Mash later calls them to help Ritsuka and Moriarty against EMIYA Alter, but they’re busy dealing with the still active Coloraturas. They arrive just when EMIYA Alter retreats thanks to Hassan of the Cursed Arm’s intervention, disappointed their attacks barely missed. The group then returns to the hideout, joined by Cursed Arm.[17]
Back at the hideout, the group relaxes. Cursed Arm soon reveals himself to be Yan Qing, an Alliance member, in disguise. He takes Ritsuka hostage, but the Alters arrive to stop him. He dodges their attacks and makes his escape as Artoria Alter chases him on her motorcycle, with Jeanne Alter following. Unfortunately, they’re unable able to rescue Ritsuka thanks to being delayed by the Hornet soldiers and King Lear called by Yan Qing.[18] The Alters later beat Moriarty for letting Ritsuka get kidnapped.[19]
Fortunately, Sherlock Holmes rescues Ritsuka from the Alliance’s base of Barrel Tower. The Alters express their concern and relief upon Ritsuka’s return. Returning to the hideout, the Alters learn Moriarty’s True Name, further increasing their distrust of him. Artoria Alter suggests permanently banishing him. Sherlock then explains how the Alliance’s goal of destroying the planet is possible without utilizing outside forces by doing what Thomas Edison and the Lion King tried to do. Artoria Alter calls the Lion King's plan shallow and ill-conceived but understands it as the result of much agonizing. Da Vinci realizes Shinjuku is in a culled timeline, meaning it will have no adverse effect on history. But Ritsuka decides to save Shinjuku regardless. Sherlock then explains how evil Moriarty plans to use the powers of the Freeshooter to load a meteorite into Barrel Tower, then fire it into the planet’s core as a magic bullet to destroy the planet. He then suggests they eliminate Yan Qing next. Ritsuka and the Alters leave to steal clothes for Sherlock and Moriarty’s plan. Afterward, they change their clothes.[20]
At a party hosted by Yan Qing, the Alters delight in seeing Ritsuka uncomfortable with their disguise. Taking a camera phone from a passerby, Artoria Alter has Jeanne Alter hold Ritsuka while she takes pictures and uploads them to Chaldea’s server. Afterwards, Artoria Alter dances with Ritsuka while they wait for Yan Qing to appear. She then notices Hornets upstairs, so she expects Yan Qing will soon appear. She becomes enraged, however, upon seeing he is disguised as her. Yan Qing soon notices her and orders the Hornets to attack. Joined by Moriarty, the group defeat the Hornets followed by Romeo and Juliet. More Hornets appear, with Yan Qing being disguised as one of them. Ritsuka removes their disguise to shock him into revealing himself as part of Moriarty’s plan. Yan Qing reveals his True Name and fights the group. Sensing that he’s going to lose, Yan Qing activates a bomb under the building to collapse it, prompting the group to escape. After Moriarty kills Yan Qing, the group prepares to leave when they’re found by Hessian Lobo.[21]
Confronted by Hessian Lobo, the group sees he’s been fused with the Invisible Man. He then instantly targets Ritsuka as they’re the only human around. Unable to defeat him, the group decides who’ll stay behind to hold Hessian Lobo while the rest escape. Jeanne Alter takes the task upon herself, so the others can escape. She tells them to use that time to find a way to defeat Hessian Lobo permanently. She rejects Artoria Alter’s suggestion of choosing someone among their group fairly. Artoria Alter wishes her luck, and escapes with the others.[22]
At the hideout, the group recognize they’ll need to trap Lobo, recalling he died after falling for one using his dead mate, Blanca. They can construct a leg trap, but they lack a white wolf like Blanca to lure Lobo. Artoria Alter soon realizes they wish to use Cavall II as bait. She argues against it, asking how they’ll fool Lobo’s nose. Sherlock explains there is no need to, but Artoria Alter still refuses to put Cavall II in danger. However, Cavall II agrees to the plan, to her surprise. The group then leaves to initiate their plan.[23]
Later, the group set traps while Ritsuka and Artoria Alter wait for Hessian Lobo on her motorcycle. Hessian Lobo soon arrives, and the pair leads him into the traps. He easily avoids the first two, but he’s caught in the third when he stops upon seeing Cavall II. Taking advantage, Ritsuka and Artoria Alter fight Hessian Lobo before he can break free. However, before Artoria Alter can finish him off, Hessian separates from Lobo and blocks her attack. He then throws his weapons away and tries to protect Lobo; Artoria Alter tells him to move aside or fight. She then tries to chase after Lobo when he flees after biting off his leg. Sherlock stops her, though, understanding both Hessian and Lobo will soon disappear. Artoria Alter finds it a shame that Lobo cannot return home, as he is too blinded by revenge to remember where it is or his pack. She then notices Cavall II following after Lobo.[23]
Back at the hideout, Artoria Alter rewards Cavall II with better than normal dog food for their bravery. Moriarty states EMIYA Alter is standing guard in front of Barrel Tower with over 200 Hornets. Sherlock deduces Evil Moriarty plans to use Bennu, an asteroid measuring 500m that was observed in the current year, as his magic bullet. Returning to the topic of EMIYA Alter and his Hornets, Moriarty sends Da Vinci pictures of them. She relays information on their formation and weapons, the same used against large Demonic Beasts. Artoria Alter realizes she’s their target, so they can’t charge in on her motorcycle. Mash then recalls how she and Ritsuka were launched by Arash during Camelot.[24]
While EMIYA Alter and his Hornets are distracted by her motorcycle, Artoria Alter and Ritsuka are launched into their ranks via a makeshift launcher Moriarty made according to what Mash said earlier. As Artoria Alter fights EMIYA Alter, Sherlock sends out hacked Coloraturas to attack the Hornets. Moriarty then throws down a smokescreen which Artoria Alter uses to swap a Hornet with a disguised Moriarty. The group then uses this opportunity to enter the tower.[24]
Inside the tower, the group ascends it, defeating Macbeth along the way.[25] Reaching the top floor, they’re greeted by the evil Moriarty who’s been expecting them. He announces Bennu is already here thanks the Freeshooter’s power and fights the group. They defeat him, but a Demon God in humanoid form manifests in his place. Having regained his memory, he reveals he waited for 3000 years to kill Ritsuka and introduces himself as Baal. Moriarty then pierces Sherlock, revealing he and Baal were partners. After absorbing Sherlock to gain his power, he explains he allied with Baal to achieve revenge against their respective rivals. He also explains. In order to catch Sherlock off-guard, Moriarty erased his own memories and evil personality to create a good persona. Baal did the same, believing himself to be the Evil Moriarty. EMIYA Alter then appears and shoots Baal, revealing he was contracted to kill him and only joined the Alliance for a greater chance of success. He then fights Baal, while Ritsuka and Artoria Alter fight Moriarty. However, Baal declares Ritsuka will absolutely die before disappearing. Bennu suddenly appears in the skies above Shinjuku. [26]
Moriarty explains the Freeshooter’s seventh shot will always shoot someone precious to the shooter. Mash realizes Bennu is the seventh shot, and Artoria Alter realizes it activated the moment they tried to kill Moriarty. Mash then deduces Moriarty made Ritsuka into his precious someone, so now Bennu is heading towards them. Moriarty confirms Artoria Alter’s suspicion that getting Ritsuka into the tower was part of his plan. He declares there are about five minutes left until Bennu is loaded into the tower, and reveals he became good to make Ritsuka vulnerable. Artoria Alter takes EMIYA Alter with her to intercept Bennu.[27]
With Moriarty’s defeat, Bennu ceases being a magical bullet, allowing EMIYA Alter to shatter it with Unlimited Lost Works. Artoria Alter then destroys the pieces with Excalibur Morgan. Afterward, she leaves to speak with Cavall II one last time before she disappears. She tells him he’s free to be a stray or choose a new owner. But regardless of his choice, Artoria Alter knows he’ll be fine, and thanks him for standing guard. She then tells him to go and disappears.[27]
Summer Event: Dead Heat Summer Race[]
Artoria Alter notices a flyer for Ishtar’s race. While she believes Servants have no need for vacations, she will accompany Ritsuka to the beach, believing they deserve a vacation. She understands Ritsuka wants her to win the race, but she cannot do so as a king. So she will participate as the greatest maid of all to ensure it’s conducted properly and fairly. She later changes into her swimsuit and enters Da Vinci’s workshop to get her own vehicle built. But since Nero Claudius beat her to it, Artoria Alter offers to the people Da Vinci needs to build Nero’s vehicle. Nero tells her to leave until Artoria Alter points out a rule requiring racers to compete in teams of two, with one driving and one supporting. Nero questions why she wants to ally with her. Artoria Alter answers she needs to win, so she needs a skilled race instead of a familiar subordinate. Nero accepts her proposal, saying the latter can have the reward. Artoria Alter wants the reward, believing it’ll be useful to Ritsuka. More importantly, though, she wants to demonstrate her superiority to them. She and Nero shake hands to confirm their alliance. They then duel to determine who will be the driver.
At the racetrack, Artoria Alter confirms with Nero that all racers are required to wear swimsuits. They are both driver and assistant, as it isn’t against the rules for them to have concurrent roles. They both wanted to be the driver, but neither of them would permit the other. However, there wasn’t enough time to agree, so they compromised to share the role of driver. Ritsuka asks why they both wanted to be the driver, to which they answer the driver gets the glory. Ishtar then shows everyone the ritual tools, which are key to erasing the Singularity and indicate a team is a legit participant. They integrate into the vehicles, and any vehicle trying to race without them is automatically disqualified. After commentary on each team from Ishtar, the race begins.
A gang of thugs appear before the racers. Artoria Alter and Nero start the battle with their Noble Phantasms. After the thugs are defeated, Atalanta arrives. She is the leader of the thugs, whom she considers her children to the racers’ confusion. Calling the wasteland Atalanta Plains, she tells the racers that its roads lead to where she and her “children” planted Seed Apples. She says they are essential to her “children” ‘s future, so she cannot permit them to be destroyed in the race. Everyone ignores her but soon learns she planted land mines to protect the seed apples. . Atlanta is eventually defeated, and the racers move on to the next area.
The race brings everyone to an active volcano, where they meet Boudica at its crater. She offers to cook them something, only to turn hostile. Her hostility is due to what happened to Britannia, and the fact she doesn’t have a playable swimsuit version this year despite modelling in one last year. She has become an Avenger, believing she must utterly break the racers’ spirits to protect her homeland. She will do so through a game of chicken to the mouth of the volcano, setting it up so the racers can’t cross the volcano until they beat her. The racers accept her challenge; Artoria Alter lets Nero be the main driver after seeing her enthusiasm. Eventually several racers drop out, which Artoria Alter finds better than easily removable stains. She and Nero eventually near the mouth of the volcano, but the former says they won’t be able to brake in times. Nero says they will slam the accelerator instead, intending to win Boudica’s challenge. She steps on the brakes at the last second, but she notices Boudica isn’t reining her horses. She and Artoria Alter save her before she can fall into the volcano with her chariot. Boudica asks Artoria Alter why she doesn’t hate Rome like she does as they both fought against it. Artoria Alter replies she cannot answer that, but she finds Nero’s opulence pleasing. This makes Boudica that realizes that herself as a Heroic Spirit and her living self aren’t the same person. She apologizes for previous behavior, believing it resulted from having her Spirit Origin changed when she summoned. Nero asks her who won the challenge. Boudica points out it was Oda Nobunga and Mysterious Heroine X since they actually went into the volcano. She then says the road to the next area will open once she disappears. She disappears, wishing the others good luck. Artoria Alter and Nero then escape when volcano starts to erupt.
Eventually the racers arrive at a river. Penthesilea appears and explains the more beautiful they are, the faster they will go. She introduces them to the judges: Mister B, who judges their personal beauty, and Da Vinci, who judges their vehicles’ beauty. As the race continues, Artoria Alter and Nero notice they aren’t going fast enough, so Nero dives into the river to let the spray of the water to highlight her beauty. Artoria Alter uses something from Merlin she installed into the vehicle to release floral fragrances. Unfortunately for her and Nero, Mister B judges them as decently cute. Everyone (except Helena Blavatsky and Frankenstein) soon beats him up after noticing his double standards, revealing him to be Blackbeard in disguise.
The racers soon enter the fourth area, which has breast-shaped hills. Artemis and her copies fire on them, warning they cannot go through Artemis Valley as they please. She will allow them to pass if they can find the real Orion among his copies and return him to her. Artoria Alter agrees with Nero to drive through the valley without Artemis’ permission, comparing love, hate, romance to stains you’re unsure whether or not to clean. However, the Artemises fire a volley of arrows that force them to crash it into the hillside.
The racers reach the last area, a bridge over a large ravine, with the Ishtar Temple at the finish line. Nero notices the others are close behind them, so she tells Artoria Alter not to take her foot off the accelerator no matter what. Artoria Alter agrees, saying she’ll shower Nero in ale herself when they win. However, everyone plummets into the ravine when someone cuts down the bridge.
Summer Event: Death Jail Summer Escape[]
The racers find themselves at the bottom of the ravine. They’re attacked and overwhelmed by Hessian Lobo, who Artoria Alter suspects is a fake. Medb arrives and reveals Hessian Lobo is a securiy system made in the original's shape, confirming Artoria Alters's suspiscions. Medb then arrests the racers for placing weird textures on her land without permission. The racers fall unconscious and wake up in Medb’s prison. They find out that their powers are negated within prison. Medb tells the racers that she locked their vehicles up somewhere outside the prison after sensing a strange power from them. The racers are then brought to their cells, where they soon meet Ishtar’s avatars. They then encounter Carmilla working as a prison guard. Carmilla determines they're too weak to escape and opens their cells.
In the courtyard, the racers meet Gorgon, who's only brought out of solitary confinement for exercise. She agrees to tell them about the prison if they help with exercises. However, the fight is soon interrupted by Florence Nightingale, who leaves after Gorgons says none of them are injured. Minamoto-no-Raikou deduces Gorgon is a projection of her real self inside her cell. Gorgon confirms thus then reveals it's impossible to destroy the prison’s barrier from either the outside or the inside. However, the racers can take advantage of Medb’s overconfidence in her Prison Field to find blind spots to escape. Carmilla then brings the racers back to their cells. There, Nero and Artoria Alter agree with Ishtar that they need to escape first if they wish to reach their vehicle before the others.
The next day, the racers still haven't found an escape route. They see Quetzalcoatl training other prisoners to be luchadores. After some sparring, the racers are sent back to their cells. They then follow Ritsuka's advice to dig their way out of the prison.
However, the racers' tunnels all converge onto Gorgon's cell, where she is chained there by divine steel. Gorgon asks the racers to stop Nightingale from spraying her with reptile sanitizer. But the racers remind her that they were never friends and that she only used them to vent her frustrations. Gorgon replies that she'll help them if they defeat Nightingale. After Nightingale is defeated, Artoria Alter threatens Gorgon with the reptile sanitization spray. Gorgon, however, points that she melted the bottle’s bottom with her acid. Nero determines they can use her acid to clear any obstacles that bar them while digging. Since they had a deal, Gorgon spews her acid into special magical containers for each team.
Unfortunately, while digging, they discover the Prison Field extends underground. They return to Gorgon's cell, who seems to be enjoying their predicament. After venting their frustrations, the racers realize they have no choice but to kill Medb to disable the Prison Field. Gorgon reveals there was another prisoner who tried escaping by killing Medb. She defeated them and revealed she has a conceptual weakness to projectile cheese. But Medb is always protected by her warriors. Gorgon reveals Medb always takes a shower in her warden’s office at the same time every day. James Moriarty, Thomas Edison, and Nikola Tesla point out they need someone intelligent as them and Charles Babbage, who also knows the prison’s layout if they want to successfully snipe Medb from outside her bathroom window. Gorgon reveals there is a prisoner who knows everything about the prison, despite being in solitary confinement. She then gives the racers general directions to that person's cell.
They dig into the prisoner’s cell, who turns to be Enkidu in tight restraints. Enkidu asks the racers to do something for them. Artoria Alter thought they wanted her to clean their cell if Ritsuka gives her permission. It would also give her an excuse to employ the Maid Reward Cards she made. She then decides to clean Enkidu’s cell with dizzying speed without stopping unless begged to. While they wish to see their cell cleaned, Enkidu wants to spar with the racers to see if they’re fully functional. Enkidu afterward then agrees to provide the racers with the necessary calculations. Carmilla arrives to feed them, and attacks everyone after seeing Enkidu unrestrained. After defeating Carmilla, Enkidu, Babbage, Edison, and Tesla make blueprints for their cheese-apult.
After building it with the materials Ritsuka provided, the racers use the cheese-apult to assassinate Medb while she’s in the shower. However, Medb kicks the cheese away thanks to training her body to automatically react to incoming cheese. Helena considers the Medb in this Singularity to be a little different from the usual Medb, almost as if she was optimized to protect her land. But it's also possible any Celtic woman can pull off what Medb just did if she trained hard enough. Enkidu reveals there is another way to remove the Prison Field, one only they know of. They reveal the control device for the Prison Field is a stone above the ground. The racers soon realize it’s in the statue of Medb in the courtyard. Enkidu then reveals there is a prisoner who is master of disguise that the racers can use to trick Quetzalcoatl into disabling the Prison Field. The racers then dig their way to the prisoner’s cell.
They arrive in the prisoner's cell, only to find Carmilla there to their shock. They fight her, but in the midst of it, she turns into Nightingale. After being defeated, she reveals herself to be Yan Qing in disguise. He agrees to disguise himself as Medb to trick Quetzalcoatl into disabling the Prison Field in exchange for fighting him. But Raikou has him sit in the corner and lectures him until he gets sore. Afterward, Yan Qing (disguised as Med) gets Quetzalcoatl to disable the barrier underground, allowing the racers to reach their vehicles in the warehouse.
The racers escape to the outside, where Medb and Quetzalcoatl confront them. Medb deflects shots from X's cheese blaster and decides to execute the racers, accusing them of covering Connacht with textures of another place. The racers defeat Medb and Quetzalcoatl, then return to the race once they disappear.
If Nero and Artoria are in the lead for the race, they come neck and neck with the teams whose vehicles can match theirs: Team Nobunaga and Team Fran. Thanks to Artoria Alter’s defensive maneuvers, they eventually get ahead of their rivals. After the race, however, an enormous storm moves toward the track as if it has a will of its own. Ishtar reveals this was her plan. Unbeknownst to the racers, their vehicles’ tires were carving magical energy into the Venus textures she placed on the land. She then reveals her temple is a giant ATM called the Ishtar Quantum Power System. The racers confront her when the relics she had them install in their vehicle are suddenly removed. The relics converge at the Ishtar QPS, which gathers the magical energy expended in the race. At the same time, the relics were storing the heat created by the friction of the racers’ tires running across the Venus textures for each relic to reach an excited state. The purpose of all this was for Ishtar to create a new Gugalanna. After using the relic and the Ishtar QPS to do so, she declares she can use him to destroy the Singularity. Da Vinci points that would work, but it’d also destroy Connacht. The racers then fight Ishtar and Gugalanna before he’s completely formed, but they struggle against him. Quetzalcoatl then arrives to attack Gugalanna, revealing the her that disappeared before Yan Qing in disguise. After she destroys Gugalanna, the racers and the race’s administrative staff get their picture taken by Georgios.
If Nero and Artoria Alter won the race, the former wants the latter to bask in the glory and celebrations alongside her. However, they argue when Artoria Alter wants to give the Holy Grail to Ritsuka herself. They then recall how Ritsuka passionately asked them to race individually, saying the experience caused their Class Change. They agree to punish Ritsuka for their trickery before proceeding to duel each other for the Grail.
Summer Event: Servant★Fes[]
Artoria Alter works as a waitress at the hotel where everyone is staying. She later appears at the shooting range to ensure Secace is in working order, praising it for picturesque locale. She reminds Mecha Eli-chan that the range is tourist attraction, not a military facility, when the latter gets infuriated that they ran out of ammo. She then watches in amazement with her and Billy the Kid as an old man gets a bull's eye everytime with a flintlock pistol without getting up from his chair.
In a subsequent loop, she prepares to serve a meal to Scheherazade and Nitocris. In response to Nitocris's surprise, she boasts she is skilled enough to work at multiple restraunts, serving as waitress, cook, and cleaner all in one. Following the meal, she draws her rifle when Scheherazade pays the exact amount on the check. She leaves them be though once Nitocris gives her her 30% tip.
Christmas Event: Holy Samba Night[]
Santa Alter enters the Santa Tag Team Tournament on behalf of England. Her partner is Astolfo, who she picked because he said he has a royal english bloodline and because Hippogriff can pull her sleigh. They are Quetzalcoatl and Bradamante’s first match. Santa Alter questions why Altera picked Quetzalcoatl to be this year’s Santa, considering her to be gaudy and flamboyant and samba to be unsuitable for Christmas. She considers it her duty and right as the original Santa to test Quetzalcoatl’s powers as Santa personally. Quetzalcoatl admits the situation is her fault, so she’ll clean up her own and prove beyond a doubt she can be a great Santa. After losing, Santa Alter concedes Quetzalcoatl is this year’s Santa and tries to warn her that she’ll be coming up against many aspiring Santas. But Quetzalcoatl interrupts and declares she fears nothing as the newest Santa who delivers presents while dancing. Santa Alter simply smiles in response.
Later, while watching the livestream of the finals, Santa Alter and the other Santa Servants lend their power to Bradamante so she can defeat Black Quetzal Mask (Quetzalcoatl’s evil self), who had donned herself with the very concept of Santa Claus extracted directly from the Christmas Grail.
Interlude[]
In her Interludes, while in the middle of conducting a training on her Master for their sake, facing a Servant that was possibly born because of the curse of the Holy Grail similarily like herself, and facing a Servant that was once called a former king similarily like herself, allowed Artoria Alter to picture her state of being and reaffirm her personal circumstances.[1]
Abilities[]
After being blackened, her magic reactor grew outside the scale, greatly increasing her Magical Energy consumption.[2] However, thanks to being Sakura's Servant, she was provided with her enormous magical energy supply.[5] Whereas Artoria used to contain her own power,[2] due to her past Masters usually being unable to provide her with sufficient Magical Energy,[28] in this condition, she wields powerful energy without hesitation.[2] As such, her destructive power has also been increased, becoming a fearful being, inflicting havoc and death upon the world.[5] Although Artoria was able to make use of her original abilities without being affected by the Master after making a contract with Rin,[28] and just seeing her standing in that state without moving a single finger was enough to make Shirou believe that there seemed to be no end to her overwhelming power and that she wouldn't lose even to Heracles,[29] in a sense, Saber Alter is even more powerful than she was in life, and none can deny that she is the strongest servant.[5][30] In straightforward attack power, she is the strongest.[31]
Combat[]
Having been released from Shirou and having access to a great source of magical energy, Shirou claims that Saber Alter is literally invincible and that not even Sakura, who had an extraordinary amount of magical energy, would be able to beat her.[30] The disparity in strength between Saber Alter and the Saber prior to her darkening is such that, whereas Artoria was greatly outmatched by Heracles and gravely injured in their first fight,[32] Saber Alter was able to easily corner and overwhelm him even in a direct battle.[5][33] Although Heracles smashed the ground with an attack powerful enough to destroy a mountain, even the flying rubble did not cause her to falter, and she simply made her way through Berserker's sword and the flying clods to attack his defenseless body.[34] Every single of her strikes is massive, and anyone fighting her without paying attention will have the top half of their body sent flying.[11] Their power is equivalent to an A rank attack, and as such, she sliced through Heracles' harder than steel body, killing him like it was nothing.[33][34] Although Berserker gained resistance to her attacks after being healed thanks to God Hand, Saber Alter was capable of killing him more times by increasing the power of her attacks with her Mana Burst skill, to the point where each of them looked like a Noble Phantasm. The only time she invoked the True Name of her sword to fire her Noble Phantasm is at the end of their fight when her lips are shown muted.[33] In the Fuyuki Singularity, Cú Chulainn noted that Saber had trouble defeating Berserker.[35]
In this state, Artoria's Luck has been greatly decreased. Although Cú Chulainn agrees that as Caster he wouldn't stand a chance against Saber Alter, he claims that he could have finished her off with just one strike had he been summoned as a Lancer.[35] Due to Saber Alter having lost "the protagonist’s compensation or the glimmer of the stars", a fight between Gilgamesh and her would be just a measure of their abilities. Back when they were alive, both had extraordinary magical energy output, so it would be a measure of their firepower, where Gilgamesh would gain a slight advantage due to his "omnipotence and cunning". Should they fight as Servants, Saber Alter could win due to Gilgamesh not having any assistance from his Master as he usually fights relying only on his own power, regardless of his master being a first-rate or third-rate Mage. Gilgamesh could defeat her if his “Master’s charm as a human” is high.[36]
Artoria is strong enough to block a strike from full power Cú Chulainn Alter without much difficulty, whereas even while weakened by Semiramis' poison he had been shown to be strong enough to kill Karna with one blow. After recieving Cú Alter's attack she decided to join Heracles in his battle against the Celtic warrior, to which he responded by releasing all his curses in the form of his Noble Phantasm Curruid Coinchenn. With it, he defeated them both. Since the fight took place offscreen, it is unknown whether Saber Alter used her own Noble Phantasm against him or not. Since right before their fight began Saber Alter said "Prepare to taste the steel of my scacred sword", it is implied that she wasn't actually planning on using the beam attack function of her sword but rather fighting him directly in close range combat.[37]
In exchange for her power having been increased more than normally, the armor Artoria wears was dyed jet black and grew in weight changing into a heavier armor.[1][2] Due to her armor having been reinforced, granting her more defensive ability than in her original state,[5] it seems like her agility has decreased as a result.[2] Whereas Saber Alter overwhelms Medusa in technique, vitality, and magical energy, Medusa was able to fight her thanks to her superior speed and her Mystic Eyes. Even though they weren't able to petrify Saber due to her having greater magical energy, it still forced a great pressure on her, reducing her abilities by one rank and stunning her,[38][39] allowing Medusa to keep her occupied by using her full strength for over twelve minutes.[39] Even in this weakened state, Saber was strong enough to repel Caladbolg II with one strike,[39] and to swing her sword at the speed of light.[40] As such, Saber Alter still overwhelmed Rider, and no matter how quickly Medusa leapt to attack her blind spots, Saber still deflected all of her attacks, without suffering a single scratch or showing any fatigue.[39]
Shirou Emiya claims that even with Archer's arm and if he were in perfect shape he wouldn't be able to beat Saber since he can't project any Noble Phantasm exceeding hers.[30] However, in their actual fight, whether it was in fear of breaking the ceiling of the cave they were on if she used it, or maybe because of some other reason, Saber Alter fought him using only her sword technique and not her Noble Phantasm, giving Shirou a slight chance of victory. The power gap between the two is still too great, so Shirou is forced to reach deep down into Archer's arm to pull out his ultimate tactic and use Kanshou and Bakuya's full capabilities. With the Triple-Linked Crane Wings, Shirou attacks her with the method he couldn't come up with, the stance that guarantees a sure kill. Targeting the enemy's neck, the two blades are thrown drawing an arc so they intersect right on the enemy. Although no hero can come out unscathed after being trapped between steel-penetrating Noble Phantasms, Saber Alter blocks them like nothing. By projecting the swords a second time, he blocks her attack, and before she has time to unleash a fatal strike, another surprise attack comes from behind her which she dodges thanks to her godlike cognition-like Instincts. Although Shirou attacks multiple times over her unguarded body by making use of the magnetlike properties of Kanshou and Bakuya, Saber Alter even blocks the simultaneous attack from four blades, destroying them in the process at the cost of leaving herself open. Although the battle would have ended with a stalemate, Shirou surpasses his limits by creating a third pair of swords with which he slashes her exposed body with a perfect attack, defeating her. Having blocked the two earlier surprise attacks from the enemy, her limbs were occupied for the briefest of moments, and thus, she wasn't able to block his final attack, which shattered her organs and crushed her spine. The battle would have ended there if Shirou had simply finished her off by destroying her brain or heart, however, it had taken everything he had to defeat her and as such, his mind had been destroyed in the process, leaving him motionless on the ground. Compared to her regular state's already superb regeneration, Artoria Alter's regeneration is bolstered by the almost infinite source of magical energy from Sakura, allowing her to heal those wounds in ten minutes and requiring the destruction of her head or heart for immediate death. As such, Saber Alter proclaimed her victory.[41]
Skills[]
Class Skills[]
- Magic Resistance (B Rank): Due to being blackened, the rank of this skill is lower than its original value. Still, its rank is considerably high, as it nullifies spells at B rank (activated within three counts) or lower, and it is difficult to harm her even with greater magecraft.[5]
- Riding (— Rank): In the maddened state while blackened, the loss of fine control makes it impossible for Saber Alter to ride beasts; rather, the mount cannot withstand it. Therefore, in reality, one can consider the Riding ability lost.[5]
Personal Skills[]
- Mana Burst (A Rank): Both Saber's body and sword are always infused with the Magical Energy supplied by the Greater Grail.[5] By instantaneously releasing her magical energy, her abilities are increased in a similar manner to jet propulsion.[1][2] It engulfs her more powerful attacks and leaves a black trail behind her strikes. She can release a burst of black energy in varying sizes called Burst Air (バースト・エア, Bāsuto Ea?) that can either travel towards the opponent or rise high into the air. Its power is great enough to give Rider of Shinjuku a mortal wound.[42]
She can create solid energy in the form of a dragon's head to grab, bite, and throw the enemy with Tyrant Clap (タイラントクラップ, Tairanto Kurappu?), and she can strike at the enemy from afar by surging magical energy around her and attacking with several black tentacles of energy. Of course, the magical energy which is constantly consumed is also quite large, so her appetite has also grown compared to her normal counterpart in order to sustain herself.[1][5] Artoria herself possesses average physical strength, but she managed to defeat countless enemies by strengthening all actions with her excessive magical energy.[2]
- Mana Burst (Reverse Scale) (A Rank): Upgrade from Mana Burst in Fate/Grand Order.
- Instinct (B Rank): In order to maintain her reason in this state, constant self-control is required. Due to her constantly suppressing her rage, her surroundings are neglected and Instinct is dulled. On the other hand, Artoria in this state may be rather more likely to take action due to her behavior being distanced away from that of a hero's.[1][5] Despite this skill having been ranked down, Saber Alter still possesses the ability to always "feel" the best course for oneself during combat.[1]
- Twilight Star (A Rank): Upgrade from Instinct in Fate/Grand Order.
- Charisma (E Rank): Saber Alter boasts the natural talent to command an army,[1] however, the rank of this skill is much lower than normal, as the magnificent king's charm which once inspired and captivated her soldiers is gone. It increases her leadership skills while significantly decreasing the morale of her troops.[5]
Noble Phantasm[]
In this form, Artoria still wields Excalibur. Due to the nature of this Divine Construct as a “sword that amplifies”, when Saber was blackened, Excalibur blackened with her, becoming known as Excalibur Morgan.[43] In this state, the fact that it is the strongest holy sword does not change,[43] and it can be considered even more dangerous than its regular counterpart due to Artoria wielding it to her heart's content, without controlling her own magical energy.[2] As such, to beat Saber Alter in a one on one duel, her opponent would need to be a skilled user of a Noble Phantasm that equals hers. A contradiction, since very few Heroic Spirits may possess a Noble Phantasm surpassing hers.[30] Furthermore, thanks to the enormous mana supply granted by Sakura, Artoria can now invoke this Noble Phantasm without limit.[5] Thanks to this, after Saber was blackened in the Fuyuki Singularity, she began rampaging like a tiger released from a cage, defeating EMIYA, Benkei, Medusa, Heracles and Hassan of the Cursed Arm by herself.[35]
In her fight against Medusa, Excalibur Morgan managed to offset ninety percent of Bellerophon in less than an instant,[39] despite Medusa's Mystic Eyes producing a rank down on all of Artoria's abilities.[38][39] Saber's holy sword would normally have no trouble vaporizing Medusa's trump card, however, Shirou was able to aid her by making up for the difference with Rho Aias, barely gaining an edge in the confrontation of the Noble Phantasms. Thanks to their combined efforts, Saber was left deeply wounded, however, she still had some power left, and had Shirou not killed her right there with the Azoth Sword, Saber would have healed short after.[39]
In her fight against Caster Cú Chulainn and Mash, Saber Alter lost due to her tenacity wavering. Since she stayed her hand at the last moment right before firing her Noble Phantasm, Mash managed to block it with Lord Chaldeas allowing Cú to finish Saber off with Wicker Man.[11] Even in this weakened state,[11] Excalibur Morgan remains extremely powerful, as even after Altera absorbed a Holy Grail in the Septem Singularity and fired her Teardrop Photon Ray, its tremendous magical energy only reminded Mash of the sacred sword they saw in Fuyuki. Mash also stated that Lord Chaldeas wouldn't have been able to block it on its own, as she needed the help of Boudica's own Noble Phantasm to block it, and even then, Lu Bu and Spartacus were destroyed by the light since they were rampaging around the palace entrance. She would go on to doubt if Nero Claudius, Boudica and herself would be enough to beat Altera since she had help of a powerful Caster when they defeated Saber Alter.[44] Although Saber Alter considers Altera herself to be a disappointment, once Altera starts drawing all the mana in the atmosphere into her blade, Artoria acknowledges her Teardrop Photon Ray as a worthy foe. Despite that Noble Phantasm being capable of incinerating the world, Excalibur Morgan overpowers it, annihilating Altera.[45] Although Saber Alter boasts an unbelievable magical output,[11] Dr. Roman measures that the power output demonstrated by the Lion King when they first saw her in the Camelot Singularity is way beyond anything seen previously from Saber Alter.[46]
Wielding the most famous Holy Sword doesn't come without a disadvantage. Due to being the most famous holy sword in the modern era, anyone who gets hit by her Noble Phantasm and survives it will find out her True Name. Thus, it will allow her opponent to come up with a better strategy next time they face each other.[47]
In this state, Artoria doesn't even try to search for an utopia but instead pursues a more realistic common ground, understanding that no matter how much she pursues her ideals, all humans will eventually die in a meaningless way. As such, in the hypothetical case that Shirou gave Avalon to Saber Alter, she wouldn't be able to use it.[48]
Incarnation[]
She is blackened by the mud from the Holy Grail in the form of the Shadow, and she is incarnated by the power of the Grail to have more concrete ties to the physical plane. This makes her into a powerful being, and while Blackened Servants cannot return to spirit form,[5] Artoria never had that ability even as a regular Servant. She does gain the ability to travel quickly by sinking into the Shadow and moving elsewhere at Sakura's command. Due to no longer having to restrain her magical energy consumption, she has lost her limitations, causing her fighting ability and destructive power to jump significantly, comparative to a runaway train, but fine control is no longer possible for her.[5]
Forms and Alternate Versions[]
Santa Alter[]
"Miss Almost Weekly Santa Alter" has appeared.[49]
Artoria Alter has a festival-themed form known as Santa Alter (サンタオルタ, Santa Oruta?) under the Rider-class as an Event Servant, the self-described "Evil Santa Claus that cleaves through the breath-freezing winter." A form taken by Artoria Alter, who resolved herself to wiping out her own image and attempted to carry out activities as the ally of children/Santa ClausWP. The sack she holds in her hand is packed with the best selection of presents that she spent a whole year saving up.[50]
Having "taken a fancy" to acting as Santa Claus, Santa Alter has decided to briefly take up the role and deliver gifts as a means of giving "thanks for the life I have." She carries with her a bag of presents containing Craft Essences that she collected, also doubling as a bludgeoning weapon in battle. The increase in her weight accounts for the weight of the presents.[50]
Although Santa Alter has changed into the Rider Class, it is not like there has been any dramatic changes. The lack of futility in her behavior and the cool-headed character are a close resemblance to Artoria Alter, but the admiration towards Santa Claus that lies at her root is making her a little more kind.[50]
Personality[]
"At any rate, I feel like eating turkey." Because she has completely turned into Santa Claus, Artoria Alter's personality has changed in various ways.[50] The state of Santa Alter's personality is that of Saber Alter's, but there is some degree of difficulty in being bestowed the post of Santa, and with that role in mind, her personality changed to being frank. As Santa, her dreams and ideals of scattering smiles and being merry has resulted in removing the permafrost-like ice of her heart. Nonetheless, it is good that there is no change in her Spartan doctrine, being unaffected and sincere, and imbued with fortitude and vigor. She runs about for the sake of giving presents to children, gifting punishments to bad children, but later on throwing presents to them after they become good children.[49]
Santa Alter gathers unconditional trust in the Master and tells them of an aspiration of playing an active role as Santa together. The thickness of that trust is the most important role in gaining an extremely harsh victory————to the extent that she entrusts them the role of reindeer, the central part of LlamreiWP II. And it goes without saying that the Master chosen as her reindeer will anticipate heavy labor extending over the length of one week. Although she is greatly pleased with herself as Santa, the Master should absolutely do not begin to speak of that. Because there is no need to praise her as Santa. If one says "You're a good Miss Santa", etc. to sympathize with her success, don't you agree that it would be the day the sled rises to the stratosphere?[49]
Relationships[]
- Elizabeth Báthory (Halloween)
- An eyesore for she is the same festival Event Servant-type as Santa Alter. She'll make her a dragon steak for everyone.[49]
- Asterios
- Santa Alter feels obliged because Christmas is said to be associated with getting somebody to do excessive work. Needless to say, the last present delivered is a crown for Asterios.[49]
Abilities[]
Although Karna (Santa) defeated Artoria, he still regards her as truly first rate Servant. All things considered, she was of course, at a high level, and it’s worth noting that the weight of her bulging gift bag was as much of a threat as a slash from the black Holy Sword. Karna believes the only reason he won is that the ring they fought in was too small for her sled to move freely.[51]
Class Skills:
- Magic Resistance (A Rank): No matter what Great Magecraft it is, magecraft spells that are at the Ranks of A and below will be nullified. All claims and requests for presents are shut out. Santa Alter’s heart is tough.[49]
- Riding (A Rank): The ability for riding. If Santa Alter has the Llamrei II, a sleigh carrying presents, she boasts that it is even possible to deliver presents in one day from the order date. By the way, the reason the sleigh is soaring in the sky is due to Alter’s Mana Burst.[49] The sleigh that Santa Alter rides on has been handmade by herself, named Llamrei II (ラムレイ二号, Ramurei Ni-gō?), and it is pulled by a couple of reindeersWP, but she has lost them after they were scared off upon her using Excalibur Morgan as a "jet engine" to reach the stratosphere. She claims that she can guide the sleigh on her own, but feels that she needs a reindeer to "capture the hearts of the children" and thus commandeers Ritsuka Fujimaru as her reindeer by means of forcibly summoning them as her Master. She boasts that the sleigh has been assembled from ash tree's wood while having a brave horse and a lion as an image, but - no matter how one looks at it - it seems like nothing but a hippopotamus.[50] For fuel, she uses magical energy from stockings, the "crystallized wishes for presents from the children", to travel around the world.
Personal Skills:
- Instinct (A Rank): The ability to always “feel” the most suitable development for oneself during combat. Speaking of Alter, although she has attained more endurance than quickness, more power than speed, and became more insensitive than sensitive, for Santa Alter, she has no such stereotypes. For the objective of swiftly delivering presents to the children even in one second, that sixth sense is rising to its highest level.[49]
- Mana Burst (A- Rank): Speaking of Alter, although she has a dark aura hanging in the air around her, as if to say, “That battery, isn’t it leaking out?”, that sort of property is unnecessary for Santa. Since the presents must not be damaged, she is intentionally lowering the rank of her Magical Burst. “Why can’t you usually show that thoughtfulness, Miss Santa?”[49]
- Gift of the Saint (EX Rank): A Skill acquired by turning completely into Santa Claus. One can give presents, thereby enriching hearts. But because the design of the presents subtly differs even from what the targeted persons requested for, the effect of this is not able to go that far in fulfilling the targets’ expectations. One could even say that Santa Alter has the natural talent for making choices that subtly perturb the traumas of the recipients greatly.[49]
Noble Phantasm:
- Santa Alter's Noble Phantasm is Excalibur Morgan.
Swimsuit[]
Even as an Alter, she will wear a swimsuit. Because it's Summer. But due to some kind of belief, she has put aside the crown of the king, and dons a brilliant white crown - a white brim.[52]
Yes, as a maid.[52]
The King of Britain, Artoria Pendragon's other facet as an Alter, further awakened to another conviction. Welcoming Summer not as a sole tyrant, the high-spirited Artoria re-evaluates herself as a kind of service. Whatever she's saying makes sense, but it's a complete enigma as to why she's become this way. In order to allow the Master to enjoy a far more enjoyable Summer, she has chosen the path of the maid. As she intends to hide the fact that she is Artoria, her attire has many things as part of a disguise.[52]
Excalibur as a mop. Secace as a pistol. Her combat style like a militant's. Mowing down opponents with a mop, stopping their movements with a pistol, using grenades for an explosion.[52]
As a maid.[52]
(Although the person herself wont admit it, and hasn't realized it) Alter, who has succumbed to the summer mana, has changed into a swimsuit. "I am not one of those so-called swimsuit Servants. That is because, before the swimsuit, I am firstly a maid." I see, an irrefutable, sound argument. However, ever since she turned into a maid, her overly serious personality has become much stricter. She will never allow a depraved Master to escape her eyes, taking on the role as the Demonic Chief Maid.[52]
Alter joins the Ishtar Cup together with Nero. Their team name "Tyrant Shooting Star" is actually her idea. A fitting name for the miraculous team between the celebrated, selfish emperor and a tyrant maid. Her motive for entering the race is to prove herself as the strongest. She obviously seeks a (physical) reward, but that is a separate matter, and feels it's fine to win for the sake of the Master.[52]
Nero regards "all the other teams as rivals", but for Alter, there isn't "a team I definitely cannot lose to." Nero and Alter. Both of them don't accommodate each other's whims, but as Nero wants to actively participate and enjoy the race, and Alter is seeking both the prize and to disperse her violent urges (stress), they joined hands and entered the Ishtar Cup together.[52]
There is no real interest to unveil the hidden truth of the race. Because Alter is under the impression that she is being cheered on as the number one protagonist, she is in a relatively good mood. She doesn't really look that way on the outside though.[52]
Alter's approach to the race is "No holding back". Nero, who doesn't think ahead and has her foot on the accelerator, and Alter, who thinks ahead but still uses the Nitro. Nero prioritizes "Beauty and Speed", while Alter prioritizes "Simplicity and Speed". Half of their interests are misaligned, but because the other half are exactly the same, they actually get along really well.[52]
... Surely, this is a miraculous team?[52]
Alter's alignment became evil not because she doesn't regard herself well as a maid, but supposedly because of her own tactlessness in resorting to forceful methods to achieve her ideal service.[52]
Abilities[]
Class Skills:
- Magic Resistance (B Rank): Nullifies Magecraft spells that were invoked with a chant of three verses or below. It is difficult to damage Artoria Alter who has this rank of Magical Resistance with magecraft, even if she was targeted by Great Magecrafts, Ritual Spells and the like... Because Artoria is being tainted by a dark attribute, her Magical Resistance has declined a rank.[9]
- Riding (B Rank): The ability for riding. Most vehicles and beasts can be managed with above-average skill, even those that did not exist in the time period one lived in for they are not an exception to this Skill. Large motorbikes can also be handled as a matter of course. Speaking of Alter, her motorbike is a cuirassier.[9]
- Independent Action (EX Rank): The ability to be able to act even with the absence of one’s Master. Although there is a master Artoria Alter ought to serve, that is a separate matter. She acquired the menacing Independent Action Skill from the belief that a maid’s service mentality should be free… a service that should be voluntary, and not be forced into doing by anyone else. As a result of possessing this Skill, her normal Parameters have lowered somewhat.[52][9]
Personal Skills:
- Summer Sweeper! (A Rank): A Mana Burst Skill that has been transformed for a maid’s use. An expert at washing anything away with cold water. While increasing her own serviceability (the ability to quickly perform service well), Artoria Alter strictly supervises the whole party, improving their morale.[52][9]
- Coaching (A Rank→ A+ Rank): The Artoria Alter of the seaside is also a cold-blooded governess (female private tutor). By means of a strict education and guidance, she corrects erroneous battle styles. Since she is quite Spartan, those coached by her incur great damage. It is a rare Skill called ‘Skill Recharge’, but it is difficult to use. Maid is not fit to be a meathead though, so she can use it despite its difficulty.[52][9]
- Reloaded (C Rank): The water gun Alter fires can have her Magical Energy added to its shots; something like Mana Burst (Water) so to speak, and yet this is something even more elaborately applied compared to that. Given that its recharge time is short, it is fine to either use it without reserve, or to aim for a one-hit kill by using Coaching on herself together with this to pile up the magical energy from a double reload into a single bullet – a Heartbreak Bullet. This is the maid etiquette from Maid’s home of England.[9]
Noble Phantasm:
Artoria Alter's Noble Phantasm is Secace Morgan. It is a combination of Excalibur and Secace, the short sword possessed by King Arthur that “can only be carried into mortal combats”. Secace takes the the shape of a small automatic pistol, transforming into an anti-material rifile when combined with Excalibur.[52][9]
Development[]
Creation and Conception[]
Artoria Pendragon (Alter) was designed by Takashi Takeuchi in Fate/Grand Order, the coloring and finishing touches of Stage 4 were done by Hirokazu Koyama and Shimaudon. The coloring of (Santa) Stage 4 was done by Shimokoshi.[1][2] Kinoko Nasu is the scenario writer for her character in Fate/Grand Order.[1]
Her third stage costume in Fate/Grand Order was first developed as part of the TYPE-MOON 10th Anniversary X Dollfie Dream Costume collaboration. Her swimsuit form comes from the same concept art, but with alterations like an extra piece of cloth on her right thigh and a hole near the chest area.
Comment from Illustrator[]
"For Swimsuit Alter, I got to send out all the design materials I wanted to do. The fact is, the maid component was planned to be one of those materials, but it should be said that it was to be expected, for that became the attire that has the most impact, don’t you think? She became quite the luxurious character where even her animation motions change in each of her Saint Graph stages. For the design of Alter’s water gun, I got Mr. Yukio Hirai to be in charge of that. In each stage, actual firearms were used as the motifs, and I got to finish the designs by mixing in an Altered composition into them." (Takashi Takeuchi)[9]
Reception[]
- In the first Popularity Poll of Fate/stay night in 2004, Saber Alter was ranked 35th.
- In the second Popularity Poll of Fate/stay night in 2006, Saber Alter was ranked 16th.
- In the Type-Moon's 10th Anniversary Character Poll, Saber Alter from Fate/hollow ataraxia was ranked 49th. Saber Alter from Fate/stay night was ranked 222nd.

Nasu Kinoko & Takeuchi Takashi Discussion
>The catalyst for Saber's birth
Takeuchi: Saber's character is rooted in the specific desire to draw a petite, blonde female knight. As we developed her character concept, we decided to aim for something that was fresh and stimulating. I guess the best analogy to illustrate what I mean is to say that if the archetypical characters you find in bishojo games are like juice, we wanted Saber to be more like pure spring water.
>Changes that developed over time
Nasu: It's pretty commonly known that Saber was a male character in the original work, so the only major change we made to the character on the concept side of things is the gender. In terms of the character's design aspect, we really didn't change much.
Takeuchi: I don't know if this would really count as a change, but I did propose putting the Pendragon crest on Saber's loincloth. The idea was rejected, though.
Nasu: You're right, she did look a bit more extravagant during the early stages.
Takeuchi: In all honesty, I still believe the very first sketch I drew of Saber was the best one. It's something I sketched while I was working for another company prior to this one. (Said while looking at Fate/side material)
Nasu: I remember... you gave her this distinctly supple firmness. Now that I think about it, you were drawing Sion from "Melty Blood" at the time, and she had the same look to her. According to Takeuchi, Sion was made up of the parts that were left over after he designed Saber.
Takeuchi: More specifically, the leftover parts from designing Saber, Rin, and Sakura. One thing I can say about designing Saber is that I never really had a specific image in mind, but I did have ideals that guided me. I simply did my best to give those ideals a physical form. I didn't really like female characters who had their hair up, but I had to admit that Saber just wasn't as appealing with her hair down. I think exposing the nape of her neck was a key element in conveying that "purity" concept I mentioned earlier. The little stray bits of hair that look like antennae were also an important part of illustrating her character. I even had those stray hairs in my original sketch.
Nasu: Oh look, you did! (laughs)
Takeuchi: It's a bit off-topic, but I do believe that the devil is in the details when it comes to character design. You can give this character a totally different vibe just by adding one strand of extra long hair to an otherwise bland or common hairstyle.
Nasu: I see...
Takeuchi: I swear Saber looks like an ordinary girl without those tiny strands, but once you add those strands she magically becomes Saber. I recall someone referring to such stray strands as "evidence of the king", and I think they were really on to something. The horns on Gundam characters are another excellent example of how the smallest details can be the epitome of characterisation.
>Designing Saber's outfits and armaments
Takeuchi: I basically infused every part of Saber's design with my own personal tastes and preferences. Her overall design is quite simple and decidedly rudimentary.
Nasu: If you think about it though, Saber is a rather rare design... in fact, you could say it's really quite daring! I mean, when was the last time you saw a main heroine in a game like this who wasn't showing any skin!?
Takeuchi: Exposing skin may be a reliable way to go in terms of design, but I guess I thought emphasising the knighthood aspect of her design made her appealing enough. If Saber shines as a character to an unusual degree, I would say it's because of the game's excellent writing, which really brought out the best in every character.
Nasu: When the character was brought to life visually, it really reaffirmed for me the beauty of Saber as a concept and I fell in love all over again.
Takeuchi: It was only afterward that I realised just how much of an impression this character design made. Oh, and I was delighted when you told me you thought she looked great without her armour too.
>Standing pose variations for the game
Nasu: It's great to have a wide variety of standing poses for the game, of course, but as a writer that very same variety can be a cause for distress. I feel so much pressure to make the best use of every pose and facial expression in terms of the text I provide for the game, which leads to hours of staring at these images in hopes of some inspiration. I had plenty of experience with this dilemma from the days of working on "Tsukihime", so at least I was prepared this time. I don't think there's anything wrong with games that only use about six different standing poses and leave the rest up to the player's imagination, but the driving concept behind "Fate" was to further evolve the methods we had refined with "Tsukihime", so it was important that we have as many facial expressions as possible to best match a wide variety of dialogue. Even the most basic human emotion like "happiness" can be expressed through multiple facial expressions, and working through these subtle differences can be quite taxing, but in the end it is precisely these details that really bring the characters to life. I know I may be repeating myself at this point, but as a writer, the multitude of poses and facial expressions is both a blessing and a curse. (laughs)
Takeuchi: One thing I learned was that people adapt very quickly to any luxury provided, and the more you offer, the more it emphasises the specific things you are not offering. I suppose the lesson here is that moderation is key in all things. (laughs)
Nasu: That's true. For example, when the player sees that we created an exclusive facial expression for a certain event, they might turn around and ask why we didn't provide one for this other event...
Takeuchi: Something I will say is that I wish we had given Saber a little more variety in terms of her costumes.
>The message Saber carries as a character
Takeuchi: Blondes are hot!
Nasu: Hahaha yeah, totally... ...Seriously, this guy needs help...
Takeuchi: There's definitely something hot about golden locks, but I think the true allure of blond hair is in the way it also carries a sense of style and nobility.
Nasu: Now that I think about it, both Arcueid and Saber are blondes... I'm starting to worry that you intend on drawing even more blondes in the future...
Takeuchi: Is there anything else we can say about Saber?
Nasu: I shouldn't have made her such a glutton. I mean, I didn't intend to make her that way, but the results speak for themselves. (laughs) I just wanted to convey how bountiful our food supply is now compared to what people had to endure in the past, like what Artoria would have seen for herself in her original life.
Takeuchi: You know, this one time I was pondering Saber's popularity and I came to the conclusion that it's her beam weapon that draws the fans. Graceful, young female knights are not all that rare, but you really don't see many who carry a powerful beam weapon!
Nasu: Well, there is a certain "white devil"...
Takeuchi: Of course that "white devil" is popular! She has a beam weapon too! You see what I mean? Blonde + beam weapon = victory!
Nasu: That's a pretty specific victory...
Takeuchi: In the final battle of "Hollow", I got goosebumps from the overwhelming trust I felt upon seeing Saber stand before the beast horde. I am convinced that this powerful emotion is rooted in our generation's reverence of beam weapons!
Nasu: I see... It all makes sense now. It's no wonder I'm such a huge fan of "Hato No Oyomesan" (Hatoyome)!
Takeuchi: Hato Beam!
Nasu: Exactly! Though the Hato Beam hasn't been featured much lately....

[] Fate/complete material III: World Material - The Servants of the Fifth Holy Grail War:
Blackening of Servants, p.038 [T]Blackening of Servants
The black mud in the Holy Grail contaminates the souls of those who touch it. It goes without saying for mere humans, and supernatural beings like Servants are no exception to this either. The contaminated person's personality reverses toward the orientation of evil. This is madness caused by touching Angra Mainyu. This is called "blackening". There are those who can use the black mud as part of their own power thanks to the properties of its contamination and those whose powerful egos have stayed back its mental pollution.
An example of the former is Matou Sakura and the latter is Gilgamesh. The blackened Servant is incarnated by the power of the Grail so the more concrete ties to the physical plane turns them into powerful beings.
Their physical interference power increases but at the same time they lose the ability to return to spirit form.
Also, as they no longer bother to restrain their magic energy consumption, their fighting ability jumps significantly. This momentum can be compared to a runaway train.
Because they are in that state, fine control is not possible, but in exchange, their destructive power increases.
They are fearful beings inflicting havoc and death upon the world. These are blackened Servants.
Saber Alternative
Class: Saber
Master: Matou Sakura
Alignment: Lawful Evil
STR: A
CON: A
AGI: D
MGI: A++
LCK: C
Noble Phantasm: A++
Saber Alternative, or Black Saber, is the name given to Artoria when she fell to Hassan, was consumed by the dark shadow, and obtained true incarnation during the "Heaven's Feel" route.
Artoria, now jet-black, could now invoke Excalibur without limit thanks to the enormous prana supply from the blackened Sakura. Thus, she could overwhelm Berserker Heracles even in a direct battle. Now unfettered and in a sense more powerful than she was in life, none can deny that she is the strongest Servant.
Class Abilities
Magic Resistance: B
Lower than original value due to the corruption. Still high, as it nullifies spells at B rank (activated within three counts) or lower, and it is difficult to harm her even with high thaumaturgy.
Riding: -
In the maddened state while blackened, the loss of fine control makes it impossible to ride beasts; rather, the mount cannot withstand it. Therefore, in reality one can consider the Riding ability lost.
Personal Skills
Instinct: B
Constant self-control is required to maintain Saber's reason while blackened. To focus on suppressing her madness, her surroundings are neglected and Instinct is dulled.
Power Burst: A
Saber's body is always suffused in the energy supplied by the Greater Grail. Her armor is also reinforced, granting more defensive ability than in her original state.
Charisma: E
The magnificent king's charm which once inspired and captivated her soldiers is gone. Since she rules by terror, leadership ability is improved but troops' morale is extremely low.
Noble Phantasms
Sword of Promised Victory -- Excalibur
Rank: A++
Type: Anti-fortress Noble Phantasm
Range: 1-99

Even while blackened, Artoria's greatest power Excalibur is still potent. However, the sword is tainted an ominous black. Just as the fairies of the lake (Vivienne and Morgan) manifest as both good and evil, the holy sword has its own dark side. Still, its "character" as a holy sword is greatest. The function of converting the wielder's magical energy into light through the blade does not change, but the light is transformed into the same darkness of the blade. - ↑
[] TYPE-MOON Ace 7 - 10 year Anniversary interview: Nasu Kinoko X Takeuchi Takashi X Urobuchi Gen
Q: OK then, we'll change topics. Saber has a lot of alter egos like Saber Alter and Saber Lily. How do you see them, Urobuchi?OK then, we'll change topics. Saber has a lot of alter egos like Saber Alter and Saber Lily. How do you see them, Urobuchi?
Uro: What I imagine is that for the Saber Lily storyline, in Fate/stay night, Saber was completely beaten by Caster, and so she became one of her Servants. Like, she thought "I'd be way better off with Caster than with Shirou." (Laughs)
Nasu: I never thought of that. Interesting. So in other words, the white dress represents how both her body and soul have been tamed by Caster. So Lily is truly like a "lily" to Caster... you crazy bastard, you did it again...
Takeuchi: Lily's design was inspired by the dress she wore when Saber was captured by Caster. Then, we just filled it with feminine qualities that Saber lacked and it became what it is now. So basically, I think Urobuchi really hit it close to the mark.
Uro: Really?! Lily looked like a villain to me from the moment I saw her. Imagine her appearing from behind Caster, really working those heels! Just thinking of it gets me excited!
Takeuchi: But in terms of villains, don't we already have Alter?
Uro: No, she isn't a villain, she's a dark hero.
Nasu: Alter is an idealist who clings to her own values even though she's been blackened. In that respect, she isn't a pure villain.
Uro: For example, Alter's like how Hakaider was in Mechanical Violator Hakaider (*8). And Lily is the enemy she would face. The wrinkles in the corners of her eyes are proof to that. She'd shine as a villain.
Nasu: Then after defeating Lily in battle, Alter would jump on a motorbike in the last scene and ride off into the sunset. Then the narration would come in: "She is a modern knight, who lives in a world of darkness!" (*9)
Takeuchi: Motorbikes aside, (laughs) I do think it'd be interesting to add meat to Lily's character in that manner. - ↑ Garden of Avalon - Chapter 06: In the Flower Garden

- Recognition
- Magic energy of Master
The three factors that affect the status of a Servant are land, recognition, and Master.
With respect to land and recognition, the closer one is to the land (cultural sphere) that was the stage of the legend of the Heroic Spirit and the more that spirit is known, the stronger he is.
The meaning of "strong" here is the Servant becoming closer to the strength, equipment of that of the legend. Through this blessing, the addition of another NP is also possible.
If Cu Chulainn had been summoned in his homeland Ireland, a castle, chariot, protection of sleeplessness, and the like would have been added probably. Also, if the magic energy of the Master is powerful, the Servant will become closer to his strength as in the legend.

Because Artoria has served under several Masters, she is a good example for demonstrating the effect that the Master’s magical energy has on Servant Status. Because Shirou’s Magical Paths were obstructed, Artoria’s ability cannot be called that of the best Servant while having Shirou as her Master. Artoria’s abilities rose when having Kiritsugu as Master. Her LCK status decreased since even Kiritsugu still could not provide sufficient magical energy, as a result the status was affected by the Master's way of life. When having Rin as a Master, Artoria was able to unleash her original abilities without being affected by the Master.

Nasu: Dark Saber has lost what you call the protagonist’s compensation, or rather the glimmer of the stars. So a miracle wouldn’t happen against Gilgamesh, it would simply be a measure of their abilities...
Takeuchi: If it’s not in life but as Servants, wouldn’t it change a lot depending on who the Master is?
Nasu: Back when they were alive, both had extraordinary magical energy output so it would be a pure battle of firepower. With his omnipotence and cunning (INT), Gil is slightly advantageous here. If it’s a Servant battle, Dark Saber can win against Gil if the “Master’s capacity as a Mage” is high. Gil will win against Dark Saber if the “Master’s charm as a human” is high.
Takeuchi: What does that mean?
Nasu: It’s because Gilgamesh tries to fight only with his own power, regardless of his contractor being a first-rate or third-rate Mage.? <Takenoko>

Excalibur’s appearance after being corrupted by evil. Excalibur functions by converting its user’s magical energy into offensive power. Because of this nature as a “sword that amplifies”, when Saber was blackened, Excalibur blackened with her.
In Arthurian legend, King Arthur received Excalibur from Vivian, a fairy of the lake. Just as the fairy Vivian who embodied goodness had her polar opposite in the evil Morgan, so too does Excalibur have the possibility of embodying both good and evil. However, whether Excalibur is filled with good or stained by evil, the fact that it is the strongest holy sword does not change.黒エクスカリバー

Nasu: Too bad! Dark Saber doesn’t even try to look at a utopia...!
Takeuchi: What do you mean?
Nasu: She pursues a common ground that is more realistic, so she doesn’t even think about entering a utopia...It’s like “It’s good to pursue ideals. But humans die meaninglessly. That is how I will treat them.”
Takeuchi: So that’s why Dark King likes junk food.

Profile
A form taken by Altria Alter, who resolved herself to wiping out her own image and attempted to carry out activities as the ally of children・Santa Claus.
The sack she holds in her hand is packed with the best-selection of presents that she spent a whole year saving up.
Level 1 Bond
Height/Weight: 154cm・52kg
Source: Miss "Almost Weekly" Santa Alter
Region: Finland (allegedly) Alignment: Lawful Good
Gender: Female
Because she has completely turned into Santa Claus, her personality has changed in various ways.
Level 2 Bond
Although she has changed into the Rider Class, it is not like there has been any dramatic changes.
The increase in weight accounts for the weight of the presents.
The lack of futility in her behavior and the cool-headed character are a close resemblance to Alter, but the admiration towards Santa Claus that lies at her root is making her a little more kind.
Level 3 Bond
The sleigh that Santa Alter rides has been handmade by herself.
She boasts that it has been assembled from ash tree's wood while having a brave horse and a lion as a image, but - no matter how you look at it - it seems like nothing but a hippopotamus.
Its name is Llamrei II.

Excalibur Morgan.
The sword of black aurora. Just as it is.
The fact it has no twists in the name makes you feel the difference between the Servant that made an appearance in Halloween.
An article that is entirely unnecessary for Santa Claus, but since monsters might come out during Christmas by some sort mistake, she won't lose anything by holding onto it.
Level 5 Bond
- Present of the Saint: C
A Skill acquired by completely turning into Santa Claus.
Enriching hearts by giving presents.
However, because said presents' design is subtly different from what the targeted person requested, you cannot expect much from its effects.
One could say she has a natural gift for making choices that subtly perturb the traumas of others.
