Assassin (アサシン, Asashin?) is an Assassin-class Servant able to be summoned by the Protagonist in the Grand Orders of Fate/Grand Order.
Profile
Identity
Assassin's True Name is Mata HariWP (マタ・ハリWP, Mata Hari?). She was a spy active in the underworld, and may as well have been the most wondrous individual among her kind. An exotic dancer, her legs continued to bewitch military officers until the day she was executed as a spy.[1]
History
A woman spy who suddenly and roaringly made a name for herself during the period of the First World WarWP, Mata Hari, also known by her real name as Margaretha Geertruida Zelle, was born in Leeuwarden, The Netherlands as the eldest daughter of a wealthy family.[2] However, from the beginning of her life, Mata Hari stumbled into futile circumstances. Her father’s company went bankrupt, and he had repeatedly cheated on his wife.[1] Due to the bankruptcy of her parents, her period of happiness has come to an end after being informed that her family is breaking up.[2] Mata Hari’s mother fell ill with anxiety, and died when her daughter was 14 years old.[1]
After her family’s dispersal, Mata Hari made an effort to study the practice of being a kindergarten teacher under the guidance of her guardian, but when the school’s principal performed a suggestive meddling love affair towards her, she was banished by her guardian. After that, she got married and later divorced.[2] Mata Hari’s marriage failed because her husband was a violent, drunken adulterer.[1] She later debuted as the dancer “Mata Hari” throughout Paris. Mata Hari is the sun, the name meaning "sunlight" in the Malay languageWP, and she was seemingly named as such by her employer who was pleased with her exotic appearance.[2]
Mata Hari shared the bed with a great number of men as a dancer as well as a prostitute. One of the customers was a foreigner who was visiting Paris, possibly being a high-ranked military officer and politician. Incidentally, it is believed that he secretly made her a spy.[2] This young woman, who spent most of her youth abused by the greed of men, seems to have taken well to being a spy who was terribly skilled at enthralling them.[1]
No clear evidence could be acquired regarding Mata Hari’s spying activities. She was executed as a double agent of both France and Germany at 41 years old. However, both French and German sides who unintentionally executed her did not believe her to be a spy that extracted a lot of important intelligence, and it was declared that she was treated at most as someone who sold secret information to some degree. Though at any rate, France took advantage of this situation to force all their military failures onto Mata Hari. They made her appear as a scapegoat for their unskillful military operations, the existence of Mata Hari carved into history as an accused spy for disclosing their intelligence information.[2]
There are various episodes spoken of the time of her execution where Mata Hari claimed “no man could shoot me” as she became naked, her beauty causing those nearby to go mad. In order to protect themselves, the shooters blindfolded themselves, but this was expected to be an exaggeration.[2]
Was Mata Hari truly a spy, or was she a common secret information broker? The legend of a beautiful woman trifled by fate has become known with her common stage name, her original name completely forgotten.[2]
Appearance
Mata Hari appears to be in her late teens, with looks of someone midway between a young lady and a woman.[2] Having an exotic appearance, her legs easily bewitches men.[1][2]
Personality
Exceedingly cheerful and maternal. No matter how old one is, Mata Hari will treat one as a “child” if one is of the opposite sex. However, she herself shuns her fleeting fate of having no fortune.[2] She likes noble people, be it men or even women.[3] On the other hand, she dislikes people who use their political power as a shield, stemming from her past that involved such people.[3]
Mata Hari is devoted to her Master... However, from her position's standpoint, it is easy for her Master to become a dangerous person (especially even more so if the Master is of the opposite sex).[2]
If Mata Hari had a wish for the Holy Grail, it would probably be for a beloved partner and a happy household, or eternal youth.[1][3] More than anyone, she knows how weak she is as a Heroic Spirit, and has given up on those wishes ever being granted.[1]
Back in her life, Mata Hari states that each time she is embraced and each time she is kissed, the amount of beautiful things she owns grows and her amount of treasures also grows. Although they are necessary in order to live, they're things she has absolutely no need of, and they keep forever increasing. However, they are not the things she truly needs, and the true need of her's for a beloved partner and a happy household goes away each time this happens.[4]
Relationships
From the standpoint of her nature, Mata Hari cannot have a particularly close relationship with another Servant, but she is relatively close with Boudica who arrived at an untimely death much like herself.[2]
Quotes
“Servant, Assassin. Excuse me for I am not a Hassan. Hmmm… Furthermore, I’m sorry but I am unable to fight.”[2]
“Ms. Mata Hari is good on the streets. So, let’s do that. Call me Mata Hari, Master.”[2]
“Oh my, are you alright? Okay, tell me everything. I’ll be able to do it if I listen to your story.”[2]
“Lend me your ear. I’ll secretly teach only you, dear...“[2]

In her interlude Meltdown Lover, Mata Hari accompanies Ritsuka and Mash on an investigation, which Mash has her lead. She has Ritsuka and Mash tail her when she goes to a tavern to talk with a man, and the pair waits outside the tavern until nightfall as Mata Hari instructed. Later that evening, she asks for the soldiers that have been following the man to come out. Revealing themselves, the soldiers attack, but Mata Hari and Mash defeat them. Afterwards, she gets one of the soldiers to reveal that golems guard the castle gate. After destroying the golems, the group confront the king of France, but he is revealed to be possessed and attacks the group when Mash tries to speak to him. After freeing the king of his possession, Mata Hari gets him to tell her everything he knows. With the investigation complete, Mash thanks her for her help.
