Shita-kiri Suzume no Beni-enmaWP (舌切り雀の紅閻魔, Tongue-Cut Sparrow Beni-enma?), Class Name Saber (セイバー, Seibā?), is a Saber-class Servant summoned by Ritsuka Fujimaru in the Grand Orders of Fate/Grand Order.

Profile[]

Identity[]

A young swordsgirl bearing the title of the famous "Shitakiri-Suzume (Tongue-Cut Sparrow)" from Japanese folklore, and diligent owner of Enma-tei. She appears in folk legend as "a creature who helps people in the mountains." This is also how she is portrayed originally in Uji Shūi Monogatari, a collection of stories from the early Kamakura period.

While she is not originally supposed to be a summonable Heroic Spirit, here she takes the form of a "representative who receives the wishes of children."

A gokusotsu (獄卒?), a kind of oni akin to prison wardens in Hell, who runs "Enma-tei." Adopted daughter of Datsue-ba and King Enma. It is said that in her previous life, she was a young girl living in a brothel who wandered into the mountains and died. At King Enma's command, she managed Mayoiga on the surface, and her job was to weigh the sins of the people who arrived. However, for no reason in particular, she grew fond of the nearby human village, and was caught by an old woman when she went down to the village. Afterwards, she was saved by the old man, and decided to take the stance of someone who supports "good humans," eventually taking her current form of the Shitakiri-Suzume.

Also, by popular demand from the Heroic Spirits, she periodically conducts cooking classes at the Throne of Heroes. A midget cooking teacher, and also a demonic drill instructor. Uzume is a graduate of the Beni-enma Culinary School. The Japanese yōkai servants have all received Beni-enma's training and developed under her. As such, regardless of their legendary or mythological backbone, servants who were completely unable to cook, such as Tamamo-no-Mae, Kiyohime, Osakabehime, Takiyashahime, and Suzuka Gozen address Beni-enma as "Beni-sensei," and respect and fear her.

Appearance[]

Personality[]

Beni-enma enjoys a pen pal relationship with Tamamo-no-Mae, Kiyohime, and Osakabehime. Her cooking is on par with EMIYA. She chides the lazy, and is also a dedicated helper who serves the honest with a great deal of gusto.

A proactive introvert. While she looks precious, her personality is closer to that of a swordsman or an official than a young girl. As she is earnest and considerate, she communicates respectfully and seriously, no matter who she is talking to.

Even though she is not someone like Tamamo-no-Mae or Kiyohime, who can live entirely according to their own whims, she does not bear animosity towards similarly impulsive people, and will not reject them. Although she carries the atmosphere of a fair, cool-headed judge, in reality, she is a loyal sparrow who deeply treasures every favor done for her, holding them close to her heart.

Relationships[]

Tamamo-no-Mae
"Sigh...Her cooking ability has improved, but Tamamo is still not there yet. With her using the seasoning known as love in such excess, her danna-sama will grow fat in a month's time. What is she trying to accomplish by raising a human according to her tastes?"[2]
Kiyohime
"While Kiyohime's cooking is quite stirring, nearly anything would turn delicious if fire and oil were to be employed. That's not all home cooking is about. A tenzo's teachings/doctrine will have to be drilled into her in the temple one more time"[2]
Tamamo-no-Mae / Kiyohime
"They were both students overflowing with motivation. However, the fly in the ointment was that when I took my eyes off them, they would go "I messed up, but, oh well!". Individuality comes after you've become fully qualified, you know?"[1]
Osakabehime
"To teach Osakabehime cooking would be the same as returning a chick to its egg again and making it start over. ...Chirp chirp. As expected, there is no choice but to put her to the sword and having her reincarnate in a different universe."[2]
Suzuka Gozen
"Suzuka Gozen's fine the way she is. In society, there are also people who can't cook up even a meager meal no matter what they do. It's the same as reading a book, but not understanding it. Even if it's some crude cooking, it's alright if it can give serve as nourishment and satisfy your tastes. Next, you just have to find yourself a husband."[2]
Tomoe Gozen
"What is Tomoe? A pitiful monster that can't do anything other than twisting off heads? To put an onigiri inside an onigiri, does she have no concept of side dishes? Munching on daikon without even cutting it into thin slices, do you want Yoshinaka-sama to cough up blood?"[2]
Tomoe Gozen and Suzuka Gozen
"Tomoe-sama can't seem to get rid of her war-like methods no matter what... Always conducting herself as though she was on a battlefield, that mentality is probably because she was always running through battlefields with Yoshinaka-sama. On the other hand, Suzuka-sama is way too free-spirited. I was taught how to make chara-ben."[1]
Ibaraki-douji
"I heard she was a terrifying oni who laid waste to Kyoto, but she was quite a reasonable oni in the end. She isn't an oni from hell so we have no connection, but I think she could adapt relatively well to the red tape of Hell. ...Well, that habit of stealing things will have to be fixed..."[1]
Ibuki-douji / Ibaraki-douji / Shuten-douji
"I am an oni from Hell, but from the looks of it, that one's an oni of the present world. I can sense the blood of a high-class god from Shuten-douji, but Ibaraki-douji has a smell similar to mine. ...She must have been a human, originally."[2]
Tawara Touta
"Master! Master! C-c-could that fine gentleman over there be Tawara no Touta-sama!? By all means, let's decorate Touta-sama's arrow as a ceremonial arrow used to drive off evil in the Enma Pavilion's offering hall!"[2]
"The rice person! He's Japan's strongest warrior who even defeating a god-eating centipede with an "Eiya"! He also eats his meals with gusto as if they were really delicious!"[1]
Sasaki Kojirou
"That farmer's quite the cheeky one. What's the big deal about that Tsubame-gaeshi's of his? A mystic sword merely for cutting a swallow is absurd. ...Eh? Why did that farmer appear to have multiplied? Dimension warping? He'd go that far just to slay a swallow? ...De-de-deviant────!!"[2]
"He's a shady samurai, but his ability is the real deal. In the first place, since his main battlefield was the mountains, I just can not understand the meaning behind swinging that long sword around all freely like that. Not breathing a word about the incredible training he put himself through, chirp, that is worthy of respect, but...as expected, he is a deviant!"[1]
Nursery Rhyme
"That lovely little girl's name is Nahzeree Raim, right. I don't really get it, but she looks warm and fluffy. It would be nice if I could befriend her. ...However, her origins seems a bit scary..."[2]
Fionn mac Cumhaill
"He was a great help back in the Enma Pavilion. Fionn-sama shines a lot more when he is observing his surroundings than when he is alone. I want to become a person like that too."[1]

Event: Sparrow's Inn Daily Report[]

Five hundred years ago, while a guest at the Enma-tei, the Bamboo Cutter discovered his five family heirlooms were missing from his pouch. Beni-enma and the sparrows searched the inn but failed to find the culprit, only learning there was no sign of forced entry. The Bamboo Cutter concluded it was an inside job and held the inn responsible for the loss of his heirlooms. He therefore demanded to be compensated, though it was more than the inn could afford, sending it into debt. New Guests also stopped coming to the inn due to rumors saying there was a thief. In order to repay the debt, the collected gratitude kept in the Tribute Hall was used, even though it’s meant to grow the Enma-tei’s Spirit Origin. As a result, the Enma-tei fell into disrepair and now its sole function was to repay the Bamboo Cutter’s interest. The Bamboo Cutter also got the rights to the Enma-tei.

When Ritsuka's party come to the Enma-tei, Beni-enma welcomes them as its proprietress and thanks them for rescuing one of the inn’s sparrows. She then calls Tamamo-no-Mae, Kiyohime, and Tomoe Gozen, all of whom are her students in her cooking class at the Throne, to the front. Drawing her katana, she tests how much they have improved through battle, saying one’s skill in the kitchen manifests in the body. But to her disappointment, none of them improved. However, she notes Tamamo can more than hold herself in the kitchen and Kiyohime has improved her heat control. Tomoe is unfortunately her worst student, so Beni-enma will have to reteach her everything from the beginning, starting by developing her palate. Beni-enma then escorts everyone to the dining hall.

There Ritsuka’s party meets another guest of the Enma-tei, Moneyed Monkey. Beni-enma explains he used all of his money to pay for five centuries of accommodation, all because he didn’t want to work anymore. She also tells Monkey to not speak of the demonic monkeys that have been hassling the inn and its sparrows, wanting to make her new guests feel welcome and declaring she’ll take care of it herself when she has the spare time. A sparrow then reports three “bandits” from Chaldea are raiding the Tribute Hall.

Arriving at the hall, Beni-enma and the others find Diarmuid Ua Duibhne and Fionn mac Cumhaill have eaten the offerings and Goredolf Musik has opened the offering box. Beni-enma explains the hall is the heart of the Enma-tei and dedicated to all the Shinto gods. The offering box contained all the previous year’s gratitude (QP) collected from the guests who finished their stay. Once a year’s worth is collected, it is customary to convert it through ritual prayer and offer it up to the gods of Izumo so the next year will be safe and peaceful. But with it now free, Beni-enma warns the Chaldeans they cannot leave as the gods will punish them if they do. She explains if they fail to replenish the lost gratitude before the offering day, which is in two weeks, they will all be turned into pigs. She can't help as it must be gathered by those who lost it and cursed in the first place. Her only advice to them is to work, explaining gratitude is collected from all living things staying at the inn every day. If they can ensure the other guests are happy and satisfied, they may increase the gratitude collected. Beni-enma then has Toshi escort the group to their rooms.

Sasaki Kojirou later comes to the inn. Beni-enma assumes that based on his face, he has seen a lot of bloodshed and suggests he try another inn if he means to purify himself. Sasaki assures her that he never killed a single person in life and, upon seeing Ritsuka, he realizes it was his bond with them that led him to the inn. A sparrow then escorts him to his room. Beni-enma is suspicious of him, remarking wandering samurai like him or Miyamoto Musashi always smell like trouble. Mushashi was a guest, but Beni-enma had to kick her out for causing a ruckus. But despite her suspicions of Sasaki, she will allow him to stay, having already promised the others that she wouldn’t interfere with their work. She thanks Ritsuka and Mash for the cleaning they’ve done so far and gives them leave to do whatever needs to be done.

On a following morning, everyone assembles in the entrance hall for their assignment. Beni-enma assigns the sparrows with cleaning the inn and the Chaldeans with gathering ingredients. She says the inn has gotten more guests ever since Chaldea came, so the larders to be restocked. While she has mixed feeling bringing in outsider Heroic Spirits into the Enma-tei, she cannot allow the guests to go hungry. She then guides Ritsuka’s party to the good hunting grounds, saying there are dangerous beasts in the mountains beyond the monkeys.

After they finish hunting, Beni-enma says the beasts were once more docile and recalls how Divine Beasts and Phantasmals ran rampant back in the Enma-tei’s heyday. But these days, the inn has stopped getting guests, faith has weakened, and humans don’t wander into the Enma-tei anymore. After Tamamo tries to cheer her up, Beni-enma tells the Chaldeans to continue gathering ingredients. She also recounts how the sparrows have issue with fighting opponents a little larger than themselves. Fionn realizes she is talking about the monkeys and asks when they became a problem. Beni-enma answers they have been around for centuries but didn’t become a problem until recently. They came all to the Enma-tei to seek refuge from the human world they could no longer inhabit. Because she pities them, Beni-enma doesn’t want to kill them, but fears she’ll have to if they get more violent. She then returns to the inn, promising to make wild boar hot pot tonight.

Later in the Thrush Hall, she fights Magistrate Tiger, who’s regressed to his old ways. Ritsuka and Mash soon arrive and help Beni-enma. Tiger calms down afterward and apologizes for his behavior. Beni-enma explains Tiger has been a loyal customer for years and that the inn’s staff been supporting his decision not to eat meat. Tiger again apologizes, explaining the smell of humans made him regress, and thanks Ritsuka and Mash for saving Beni-enma,. Beni-enma warns him not everyone is as generous as Ritsuka.

Outside the hall, she explains Tiger is much like Monkey and Chief Snake in that they’re all monsters who lost their homes. She sympathizes with them, so she can’t help but look after them. She thanks Ritsuka and Mash for coming when they did because otherwise she would have been forced to kill Tiger, expressing subduing an opponent without killing requires being stronger than them. It was for this same reason she didn’t understand how Ritsuka could keep Tamamo, Kiyohime, and Tomoe in line despite being human. But now she understands they enjoy serving them. She then gets back to work, telling Ritsuka to spend more quality time with Mash since the Enma-tei doesn’t get married couples often.

A couple of days later, the Enma-tei gets an influx of new guests, so much that they're crowding the bridge to the inn. Realizing they'll need more hands in the kitchen, Tamamo goes to ask Ritsuka, Mash, Kiyohime, and Tomoe for their help. Beni-enma tried to stop her, thinking they needed to do it all on their own. But after Tamamo shows the others the problem and asks for their help, Beni-enma reprimands herself for not realizing what would happen once the repairs were complete. Ritsuka readily offers their help, which Beni-enma appreciates. She, however, forbids Tomoe and Kiyohime from working in the kitchen, stating they ruin more dishes than they make. Instead, she'll have them wait tables. She also warns she’ll have to ask all the guests to leave if they cannot be shown proper hospitality. Fionn recommends temporarily hiring a Servant who can cook from among the guests. The others realize they can ask Tamamo Cat for help.

But Cat refuses to work in the same kitchen as her original self. She and Tamamo get into a fight about who’s more deserving to be Beni-enma’s student. Ritsuka stops the fight and Beni-enma has both of them help her in the kitchen. Beni-enma and the sparrows later take over for Ritsuka, Mash, Kiyohime, and Tomoe in taking care of the guests in the Phoenix Hall.

Beni-enma later meets with the Bamboo Cutter and asks him to give her a few more days to repay this year’s interest. The Bamboo Cutter threatens to sell off the inn but agrees to give a one-week extension when Beni-enma pleads for more time. After he leaves, Beni-enma admits to herself she has no way of paying back this year’s interest.

The next day, Beni-enma has afternoon tea with Ritsuka and Mash, commending them for the expansions they made to the Enma-tei. She confesses, though, that the inn was supposed to have closed down long ago as once the world at large modernized the inn and the hells were no longer needed. This year will be the last year the Enma-tei will be open, so the only issue is ensuring the Chaldeans aren’t struck with divine punishment. Ritsuka asks Beni-enma why she has been running Enma-tei for all this time. Beni-enma confesses she wanted to see the kind old man who once saved her again.

The day the Bamboo Cutter comes to collect arrives with everyone gathered in the entrance hall. The Bamboo Cutter immediately demands 100 billion QP for last year’s interest, refusing any excuses from Beni-enma about her inability to pay him back. As she can’t repay the interest, he seizes the Enma-tei and asks everyone to leave his property. But he makes an exception for the sparrows, considering them his property as well, and threatens to feed them to Tiger. The Chaldeans then claim to the Bamboo Cutter that they found the heirlooms that were stolen from him 500 years ago and take him the very room he stayed at: the Raven Room.

There Beni-enma and the Bamboo Cutter find the decorum is as it was 500 years ago. Goredolf claims they’re now in the Enma-tei as it existed 500 years ago as per Fionn’s “ability” to manipulate space-time. He then directs him to retrieve his heirlooms from the pouch on the table, warning doing so would mean he was the true thief all along. The Bamboo Cutter opens the pouch and laughs at the Chaldeans for thinking they tricked him into believing they traveled back in time. Because if they did, the pouch would be empty, as he never brought any heirlooms with him. Realizing what he just said, he has Monkey recall what he witnessed back then. Monkey claims he saw the heirlooms, but Kiyohime senses he is lying. He can’t even describe one distinctive feature of the heirlooms. Kiyohime then senses the Bamboo Cutter is lying about having brought the heirlooms to the Enmai-tei. Before Ritsuka could even blink, Beni-enma cuts off the Bamboo Cutter’s mask. The Bamboo Cutter is revealed to have been the true Monkey in disguise and is the same monkey from the “The Crab and the MonkeyWP". Seeing the jig is up, Monkey calls Tiger and Snake over and they fuse to become Nue. He then jumps out the window and heads for the shrine. Figuring he intends to destroy it, everyone follows after him.

Confronting Nue in the Tribute Hall, Beni-enma asks Monkey if he sought revenge for always being pegged as the villain when he was only trying to live his lfie. Monkey laughs at her for thinking such and confesses he just enjoys being cruel. Seeing Monkey has no intention of reforming, Beni-enma takes it upon herself to punish him. She and the others then fight Nue. To Monkey’s confusion, Tiger and Snake rebel against him, slowing Nue’s movements. They give their reasons for their rebellion and split from Nue, leaving Monkey behind. Beni-enma finishes him off, proclaiming those who lie solely for their own pleasure, and envy the happiness of others, will never have anyone come to their aid.

With the Enmai-tei freed of its false debt, King Enma allows the Chaldeans’ efforts to make amends to be used as the new year offering. The curse is thus lifted and the Chaldeans earn back the magical energy they collected as a Holy Grail. Beni-enma thanks them for all they have done, knowing the Enma-tei wouldn’t have been restored without their help. Before they’re rayshifted back to Chaldea, Ritsuka wishes Beni-enma happy new year. Beni-enma responds that Chaldea and the Enmai-tei now have an undeniable connection, so if they ever need help, she’ll be happy to fight alongside them, though it might take a while to convince Enma to give his blessing. She then tells the Chaldeans that they’re always welcome.

After they’re gone, she thanks the other guests for staying at the Enma-tei and gives them a grand farewell, wishing them good fortune in the new year and hopes they’ll come visit again. After they leave, however, Beni-enma worries with the Enma-tei busier than ever, the sparrows won’t be able to handle everything. She decides to hire outside help, even considering the demonic monkeys, though she wonders what prompted their mischief. An old admits that it was his fault as he asked them to bring some of his things to a kind sparrow he heard was in dire straits. Unfortunately, the monkeys forget the purpose of their trips. But since they never returned with the items, the old man asks Beni-enma if she ever got them. Beni-enma, recognizing him as the old man she so dearly wished to see again, answers with tears of joy that she did, saying they were a big help. She welcomes him back, having waited for him for a very long time.

Nahui Mictlan: Golden Sea of Trees Travelogue[]

Beni-enma appears in the South American Lostbelt as one of the servants summoned to help Ritsuka Fujimaru and Chaldea. She is turned by Camazotz into Beni-enma Alter, but is defeated when Koyanskaya of Light forces Gilgamesh's elixir of youth down her throat, turning her back into a child. When ORT reawakens, she is taught by First Hassan the Concept of Death, but it can only be used in the underworld border. She then turns into Beni-enma Alter and gives ORT the Concept of Death.

Interlude[]

[3]

Other appearances[]

In Fate/strange Fake, Tsubaki Kuruoka sees Beni-enma and the Enma-tei when she is dreaming about wandering between various underworlds.[4]

Abilities[]

Beni-enma is one of the most well-known Heroic Spirits in Japanese folklore.[3] Originally, she shouldn't have been summoned as a Heroic Spirit, but she was transformed into a Servant as the model of Japanese fairy tales and as the "representative that accepts the wishes of children".[1]

Combat[]

Beni-enma is a practitioner of Hell Sparrow Sewing Sword-Drawing Technique (閻雀裁縫抜刀術, Enjaku Saihō Battō-jutsu?), as taught to her by King Enma. Its name is frequently shortened to "Hell Sparrow Sewing" or "Hell Sparrow Sword-Drawing" depending on the technique in question. Besides the secret arts that comprise her Servant Skills and Noble Phantasms, named techniques under this iai style include:

  • Hell Sparrow Rising Chick (閻雀昇雛, Enjaku Noboribina?)
  • Fall WindWP (颪風, Oroshikaze?)
  • Sparrow's Sixth Circlet (雀六輪, Suzume Rokurin?)
  • Sparrow's Thrust - Great Cyclone (雀の一刺し・大旋風, Suzume no Hitozashi - Daisenpū?)

Her expertise gives her a unique perspective on battle and cooking, viewing them as the same and excelling at both. It is said that she is capable of cutting off a single layer of skin, and that she will even cut off tongues that spin lies...or not...?

Ibaraki-douji would normally be unable to keep up with sword strikes as fast as Beni's, however, while powered by Enma's stolen ledger, she is able to dodge all of them.[3]

Skills[]

Class Skills[]

  • Independent Action (A Rank): The blessing of the Straw Raincoat of the Sage (賢者の(ミノ), Kensha no Mino?) that conceals the form of its wearer and alleviates the compelling force of the world that would forcibly erase one from the present world. Beni-enma can act without burdening her Master.[1]
  • Ventriloquism (EX Rank): The result of the intensive training undertaken to be able to converse with others even with her tongue cut out. Skill seals targeted at her are invalidated.[1]

Personal Skills[]

  • Mind's Eye (Fake) (A Rank): Resistance against penalties incurred from visual impairments. The ability to foresee danger thanks to natural talent that one could liken to a sixth sense or a sense of foreboding. "I'm leaving the fact that I feel a connection with a certain Sasaki because of the completely identical technique and ability unsaid on purpose; when I meet that sham of a samurai, I’ll cut him down." Such are the thoughts Beni-enma harbors.[1]
  • Star Basket (Large) (EX Rank): Secret no. 1 of the Hell Sparrow Sewing (Sword-Drawing) Technique. The wicker-basket of recompense. Beni-enma takes two wicker-baskets about the size of dice out of the sage's robe, and unseals them. The unsealed wicker-baskets take form as one big basket roughly 1 meter across, and one small basket roughly 30 centimetres across. The wicker-basket of recompense applies an assortment of bad luck......negative effects on the enemies, but also restores their HP a little. No matter how hard she is provoking the opponent, Beni-enma does not forget that this skill is still a present at its core.[1]
  • Star Basket (Small) (EX Rank): Secret no. 2 of the Hell Sparrow Sewing (Sword-Drawing) Technique. The wicker-basket of gratitude. Contains the sparrow's blessings gifted to the honest old man. Causes a variety of good-luck effects for the party, and even restores their HP. Oh man, that's freaky. Also restores a little HP to the enemy side, for some reason. No matter how much she sets up a favorable situation for her team, in any case, Beni-enma does so in a present-giving fashion.[1]

Noble Phantasms[]

Beni-enma's main Noble Phantasm is Judgment of the Ten Kings - Journey of the Wicker Basket, the third secret art of the Enjaku Sewing (Sword Drawing) Technique.

Her second Noble Phantasm is Suzume Gaeshi.

Other Capabilities[]

  • Enma's ledger: Beni is the current owner of Enma's ledger, the notebook that records everyone's lives. In other words, it contains the deeds every person on Earth has ever done. While not be as powerful as a Holy Grail, it is still a magical tool once possessed by the great King of Hell himself, so it's still nothing to be trifled with. Its effects are strong enough to make Ibaraki-douji evade all of Beni-enma's attacks with ease.[3]

Development[]

Creation and Conception[]

Beni-enma was designed by Harada Takehito in Fate/Grand Order. Her scenario writer is Kinoko Nasu in Fate/Grand Order.[1]

Beni-enma was first mentioned by Tamamo-no-Mae in Fate/EXTRA. Back then, the background which Kinoko Nasu had established for her was that she was a great mentor to Japanese Heroic Spirits who were not so good at cooking, super strict because she was from hell, a master swordsman in sparrow iai, someone who had lost her sense of taste, and kawaii. The idea of her being a proprietress who runs a restaurant inside a mayoiga was added when it was decided to introduce her to Fate/Grand Order.

When it was decided that the "Tongue-Cut Sparrow" story was going to be the central source for her character, Nasu decided to mix Japanese children stories and folk songs into her setting as well. The plotline of "honest folk getting duped" evolving into "evildoers getting judged" came about by combining the stories of the tongue-cut sparrow and the judges of Buddhist hell. The six stories used in Beni-enma's backstory were "Tongue-Cut Sparrow", "The Old Man Who Blossomed a Dead Tree", "Lump-Removing Old Man", "Kaguyahime", "The Monkey-Crab Battle", and "Mayoiga".

The keywords for her design which Nasu gave to her illustrator Harada Takehito were "Great King Enma's daughter", "sparrow", "little kid proprietress", and "master of iai". He gave no further requests and had no doubt that Takehito would come up with something spot-on.[5]

Comment from Illustrator[]

"Her base look is in the image of a Japanese traditional doll and a Zashiki-warashi. From there, within the realm of 'that which might plausibly exist in fairytale illustrations', I added things like a sparrow Enma crown, a sparrow straw raincoat, a sparrow cook's apron, a tokin horn that's like the beak of a sparrow, a long sword which's size does not fit her, tall pokkuri getas and a short-length flame-patterned long-sleeved kimono...and done!...oh my, how cute! And that's how the process went. The lisp I scribbled down for no special reason has apparently been adopted into her setting." (Harada Takehito)[1]
