BeowulfWP (ベオウルフWP, Beourufu?), Class Name Berserker (バーサーカー, Bāsākā?), is a Berserker-class Servant summoned by Ritsuka Fujimaru in the Grand Orders of Fate/Grand Order.
Profile[]
Identity[]
Beowulf is the protagonist of "BeowulfWP", said to be the oldest epic poem of English literature. The setting of the epic poem amounts to south of modern SwedenWP to the vicinity of DenmarkWP.[2]
This tale is composed in two parts; part one is the story about Beowulf proceeding to exterminate the giant Grendel together with fifteen of his subordinates, while part two portrays an aged Beowulf unfolding a mortal combat with a fire-breathing dragon, fifty years after.[1][2] He lost his fighting passion when he slew Grendel.[3]
Legend[]
The ScyldingWP clan’s chief, HrothgarWP, built a hall named HeorotWP (meaning HartWP, a male deer) and held a banquet every day and night to celebrate. However, the giant Grendel, irritated by the great noises of the celebrations, attacked Heorot and slaughtered the Scylding clan’s men every night.[1]
Twelve years passed, and one warrior took along with him fifteen of his subordinates to visit Hrothgar. That warrior’s name is Beowulf. Beowulf stayed at Heorot as Hrothgar evacuated, and Grendel came around late at night. He would fight his opponent unarmed and tear off one of Grendel’s arm.[1]
After a brief time of peace, Grendel’s mother came to snatch away Grendel’s torn arm and kidnapped one of Hrothgar’s men. Beowulf chased Grendel’s mother and beheaded both her and Grendel.[1]
A delighted Hrothgar gave Beowulf treasures of gold and silver, but the disinterested Beowulf returned to his own country afterwards to present the treasures to his king HygelacWP and serve him just as how it was before. That disinterest is not only towards his allies, but also to king Hygelac, and he became a target of ridicule. Although, his fighting spirit have not been turned off.[1] Rather, his youthful passion has been replaced with a mere desire for peace and quiet.[3]
After five years, Beowulf became king. However, a fire dragon who was angry about its treasures being stolen attacked the country Beowulf was governing, the people falling into disorder.[1]
Reluctantly, Beowulf in his aged body spurred on in the direction of the dragon to exterminate it. Only one of his subordinates, a young man named WiglafWP, accompanied him, although this person had already lost his nerves while they have yet to reach the dragon. At the end of a fierce fight where his long-lost fighting spirit blazed anew, Beowulf killed the fire dragon, although he ceased breathing due to the dragon’s poison.[1][3] His last request to Wiglaf is to “use the treasures for the sake of the people”, the treasures buried in EarnanæsWP (Whale Cape).[1]
Contrary to his image, this king attained greatness, someone who was dependable in the governing of the country, and moreover, was indeed respectable as a king who reigned without his selfish desires getting in the way of his governance. Beowulf himself was truly apathetic to the monarchy, but it seems that he was best suited to the role of king. This figure doing battle while gambling his life for the sake of the people even though they said that the man was unfit to be king is no doubt worthy of a heroic figure.[1]
Regrettably, the epic poem of “Beowulf” has been lost with the exception of the episodes of Grendel’s and the dragon’s extermination, of which they still remain, but there is no doubt that these episodes became the source of numerous legends scattered throughout the world.[1]
Appearance[]
Personality[]
That being said, since the Beowulf in Fate/Grand Order has been summoned in his golden age, he is a battle-maniac by nature. It seems that, if he were to meet Achilles or Heracles, he would end up entering a mode of "there is no choice but to talk with our fists!" He lacks most of the merits and demerits from Mad Enhancement, and even mutual understanding by means of conversation is possible. He possesses reason, and it is also possible to have a high grade conversation with him.[2]
As a king, Beowulf ruled over his people well, but his current state of mind is closer to a terrorist. He believes that creation and destruction are but two sides of a coin and destruction is only a stepping stone for creation. He might not be a suitable candidate for kingship and he shares this sentiment. He longs for destruction more than any king, and his savagery which allowed him to slay even dragons did not diminish even as he grew old. However, he is kind to the weak (such as his people and females).[1]
Beowulf basically sees his Master as an equal or approaches them with minor superiority. Depending on situations, he would either agree or disagree with the Master. However, he is hardly a rational one, so he would most likely jump onto reckless gambles and risk his life to fulfill the mission assigned. While he has no desire for the grail, he would give everything he has to obtain it for his Master simply because of their pleas.[1]

Quotes[]
"Well, heroes are all mostly sharp people yet messed up in the head. My work is to pulverize the worst of these lot."[1]
"As you live a life as a hero, you will definitely encounter these people. Despite having the ability to handle the problems themselves, they chose not to as they find it a bother to think and beg for help instead. My reply is this: "Shut up and do your duty.""[1]
"Kingship was not a suitable job for me. I will not hold onto it again."[1]

Fate/Grand Order[]
Brynhildr's Trial Quest[]
Beowulf and Fionn mac Cumhaill are fighting Helter Skelters in London when Riitsuka and Brynhildr arrive to help. He disappears after the battle.
Fifth Singularity: E Pluribus Unum[]
Beowulf serves in the Celtic army under Medb, and is warden of Alcatraz, where Sita is kept prisoner. When Ritsuka’s party arrives on the island, Beowulf sends waves of dragonkin to bar them. He is diasppointed they didn't come to fight when Florence Nightingale demands he release Sita so she can remove Gáe Bolg‘s curse from Rama. He refuses , so the group is forced to fight him. After he's defeated, Beowulf allows the group to pass.[5] When Fionn and Diarmuid Ua Duibhne confronts the group upon them exiting the prison, Beowulf declines to help the knights and returns east.[6]
Participating in the final battle between the Americans and the Celts, Beowulf faces off against the north American army in the hopes of fighting Ritsuka’s party from Alcatraz. He is disappointed, though, when he sees Elizabeth Bathory and Robin Hood instead. Nonetheless, he is impressed Robin eliminated 60% of the Celts with his traps, but claims the Celts will still achieve victory with the remaining 40%. He then fights Elizabeth and Robin, easily overpowering them until Li Shuwen arrives. He and Li Shuwen engage in a fistfight, but they’re soon interrupted when the dying Medb used the Holy Grail to summon Clan Calatin to destroy the north army. Beowulf then helps fight against the horde of Demon Gods.[7][8]
Eventually, To protect the others, Thomas Edison attempts to self-destruct himself by overloading his Noble Phantasm. But he’s stopped by the sudden appearance of Nikola Tesla, who arrived to save the era in repentance for his actions in London. Realizing their attacks are effective, Tesla and Edison unleash their Noble Phantasms simultaneously to seal Clan Calatin off. Arjuna then arrives and sacrifices himself to launch a restricted Pashupata to destroy Clan Calatin.[9]
Beowulf is disappointed that the era of strength has ended when Helena Blavatsky proclaims those like Tesla and Edison helped more people than his type ever could. Nonetheless, he recognizes his strength is still needed. He then disappears, amused at the prospect of being summoned by Ritsuka.[9]
Summer Event: Chaldea Heat Odyssey[]
Beowulf appears on the island 2,000 years after the demon boars had destroyed the boar piglets' civilization. Using his fists, he made many of the demon boars into his underlings. Later he finds Sasaki Kojirou and Karna washed up on the shore and saves them from being eaten by demon boars. To thank him for his hospitality, Sasaki and Karna agree to be his subordinates.
Later, Beowulf easily kills a giant demon boar that Ritsuka, Mash, and Cú Chulainn were struggling against. He apologizes for stealing their kill, but he needs the meat to feed his demon boar underlings. Cú Chulainn asks him if he's their enemy, to which Beowulf replies that he isn't their ally. He then leaves with giant demon boar after declaring he wants to take over the world.
He later finds a lost boar piglet and takes them back to his ruins lair. From the piglet, he learns Martha is called the Goddess of the Iron Fist for her fighting ability. So when Ritsuka, Mash, and Martha come to his ruins lair, he has Sasaki and Karna bar the group's way to him to test Martha's ability.
After the group defeats them, Sasaki and Karna bring them to Beowulf. Impressed by Martha's fighting ability, Beowulf suspects she is a famed fighter. Martha insists she is only a saint, though, and demands Beowulf to return to his duty as a Servant who protects and guides the weak. But Beowulf ignores her and orders his demon boars to attack her. After Martha kills his underlings, Beowulf is even more impressed by her and realizes why she is called the Goddess of the Iron Fist. He then reveals he took a piglet hostage and fights Marth.
Accepting his defeat, Beowulf recognizes Martha as the stronger one. But he's glad he could fight someone tough in the end, talking as if he's dying. Martha refuses him to let him and tells him to rebuild the town. She threatens to thrash him if he refuses, so Beowulf accepts the task.[10]
Beowulf, Sasaki, and Karna later join the others as they prepare to escape the island. To show his thanks, he asks Martha for a rematch, but that only annoys Martha. Everyone then escapes the island and is contacted by Romani Archaman. They learn they were only gone for an hour before rayshifting back to Chaldea.
Final Singularity: Solomon[]
Beowulf is amongst the "E Pluribus Unum" Singularity Servants to aid Chaldea against the Demon Gods Pillar.[11]
Anastasia: Permafrost Empire[]
Three months prior to Chaldea’s arrival, Beowulf and Billy the Kid were summoned to the Russian Lostbelt by the remnants of the Counter Force. They wandered around with no knowledge of their situation. They eventually became the protectors of Yaga Demensk, and the leaders of a band of male Yaga. However, a number of them rejected human leadership and turned to banditry.[12]
Billy calls for Beowulf's assistance against Ritsuka's party when they come to Yaga Demensk. Beowulf immediately suspects Ritsuka of being the human mage with Ivan the Terrible, so he and Billy fight the group to test their strength. After proving themselves, the group are accepted by the duo and their men.[12]
Inside Beowulf’s cabin, Atalanta Alter proposes they join forces against Ivan. Beowulf and Billy have no issue, but their men won’t accept it out of male chauvinism. Denying he was responsible for the dead Yaga found earlier, Beowulf and Billy recall rumors of a human killing Oprichnik and Yaga alike. Beowulf then proposes they form an alliance out of his and Atlanta Alter’s concern for the potential discord between their factions. Billy suggests using Shanshan, a domesticated Demonic Beast which detects magical energy through scent, as a messenger. It cannot learn the others’ scents for differing reasons though, so Billy joins the rebels instead. Beowulf then warns the Oprichnik in Yaga Moscow have strength on par with a Servant and proposes his men attack the capital to draw their attention to give the rebels an opening.[12]
Beowulf later learns from his men of the attack on the new rebel stronghold, which resulted in the capture of many rebels, including Atalanta Alter and Antonio Salieri. Atalanta Alter gave herself up when some children were taken hostage, with Salieri following her lead. They were then taken to a prison fortress beyond the capital. Beowulf arrives at the stronghold after Ritsuka’s party escaped from Minotauros‘s labyrinth. Billy proposes they wake up Ivan since he can only summon the Oprichnik while sleeping. Beowulf then orders his men to attack Yaga Moscow, but Billy suggests using himself as a decoy as well. After his men leave, Beowulf joins the group. He then tells the others what he learned from his men. Sherlock Holmes warns the slightest disturbance in the capital could awaken Ivan after deducing others are trying to keep him asleep.[13]
The group drive the the Border to the prison, only to find it empty. Instead they find a note from Kadoc Zemlupus saying Atalanta Alter and Salieri are to be executed in Yaga Moscow in five days. The group then proceed to Yaga Moscow to stop the execution.[13] Billy, Beowulf, and Patxi acquire Bicorns for the group to ride to Yaga Mosow. Once they reach the capital, Billy goes on ahead of the others like they planned.[14]
As Billy fights the Oprochnik alone with his gun upgraded by Da Vinci beforehand, the others infiltrate Yaga Moscow. They stop Minotauros from executing Atalanta Alter, but he traps them all in his labyrinth. However that was in the rescue plan, and they kill Minotauros. Avicebron then appears and confesses he wants to use the labyrinth to build Golem Keter Malkuth. However, he lacks a core sufficiently strong enough to fight Ivan, so he chooses himself to be the core.[14] He then gives Ritsuka control of Adam before becoming its core. The labyrinth then proceeds to reconstruct into Adam.[15]
Ivan awakens with Adam’s construction. The Oprichnik then all disappear with his awakening. He emerges infused with a mountain-sized mammoth-like creature. Kadoc proposes to the group that they work together to defeat Ivan, suggesting they target his true body at the mammoth’s head. Atalanta Alter, Beowulf, Anastasia Nikolaevna Romanova, and Miyamoto Musashi then leave to hold Ivan off, while Ritsuka commands Adam to attack him. None of them can even scratch him, however. Fortunately, Salieri’s wrathful playing of Dies Irae from the palace leaves Ivan vulnerable. Ritsuka eventually uses Adam to rip Ivan out of mammoth after Mash and Musashi creates an opening with their Noble Phantasms. .[15]
Ivan asks Atalanta Alter, Beowulf, and Anastasia for their names, which they give. After Anastasia defeats him to gain the throne, Ivan leaves for Fantasy Tree Orochi. Atalanta Alter and Beowulf leave to meet with the others after Kadoc and Anastasia leave to usher in her rule.[16]
At Orochi, after Ivan disappears, Atalanta Allter betrays the others at Kadoc’s behest in order to save the Yaga. As the group fight Atlanta Alter, her rebels fire at Ritsuka. Patxi shields them however, telling them to save their world become succumbing to his wounds. Billy then arrives and challenges Atalanta Alter to a duel, which she loses. After Atalanta Alter disappears, Anastasia uses her powers as the new Lostbelt King to let Orochi take root, so the Lostbelt can finally expand. She and Kadoc then fight the group. After they’re defeated, Kadoc tries to use the Sirius Light to rewrite the Lostbelt. Billy shoots at him, only for Anastasia to shield him. After she disappears, Billy knocks Kadoc unconscious. The group prepares to bring him to the Border when Orochi begins releasing True Ether. Da Vinci sends the Border’s extra magical energy to the group so they can ascend and stop Orochi.[16]
The group stop Orochi, but they lack the means to destroy it. The Priestess of the Alien God then appears at its roots, and freezes and shatters it with a touch. With Orochi gone, the Lostbelt begins to disappear. After Patxi is buried, Beowulf and Billy disappear.[16]
Abilities[]
Although the etymology of Berserker, one of the Servant Classes, is the word "berserk" from Norse MythologyWP, it has been told that the name "Beowulf" also has its origins in this word "berserk". However, Beowulf accomplished the feat of dragon-slaying while retaining his reason even after having aged and does not display even a fragment of madness.[2] In the North American Singularity he was regarded by Medb as a top-notch warrior alongside Arjuna.[17]
While linked to historical berserkers, Beowulf had never lost his sanity in life. Likewise, his Mad Enhancement merely makes him become a little rougher, but with absolutely no benefits in his stats or loss in his reasoning abilities. It is just to the degree of some ferocity being left, and there is no effect whatsoever to his Parameters.[2]
Combat[]
Beowulf is able to fight Anastasia Nikolaevna Romanova on his own.[16] In the -turas réalta- Manga, he is shown appearing in an instant to take on Nightingale, Mash, and Hector, and is capable of taking a direct punch to the face from Nightingale without so much as flinching. Nightingale is unable to see through his usage of Hrunting, believing it's as though he's not swinging but the sword is moving of it's own accord, while his strikes with Naegling are enough to bash Mash away and an encumbered Nightingale through a wall. Even when Rama unleashes Brahmastra, Beowulf is shown capable of surviving with only the loss of his left arm. Mash considered him similar to Fergus mac Róich, a Servant who specializes in battle, capable of fighting and leaving no room for her to commit to an attack.
Beowulf was defeated by Li Shuwen in a fist fight and he claimed that fighting Li was harder than fighting Grendel.[8] Beowulf has also been defeated by Summer Martha with a cross counter. Beowulf admited defeat and said that she is stronger than him.[10]
Rama while fatally wounded by Cú Chulainn Alter's Gáe Bolg was still powerful enough to defeat Beowulf with Brahmastra.[5]
Skills[]
Class Skills[]
- Mad Enhancement (E- Rank): The very True Name of this hero is receiving the influence of the word called 'Berserker'. He has reason, and it is also possible to have a high-class conversation with him. He has a little amount of ferocity being left behind in him, and there is even no effect whatsoever on his parameters.[1][2]
Personal Skills[]
- Berserk (A Rank): A composite Skill of the Valor Skill and Mad Enhancement Skill, negating mental interference such as intimidation, confusion and fascination, and increasing melee damage. Simultaneously, when using this Skill, he turns into a beast that fights with his instincts.[1][2]
- Instinct (B Rank): The ability to always “feel” the most suitable development for oneself during combat. By being summoned as a Berserker, he may slightly disregard his intuitions.[1][2]
- Rousing Brave (A+ Rank): Upgrade from Instinct.
- Battle Continuation (B Rank): One does not know when to give up even to the very end. In particular, even after entering old age, he still had the guts to go strong, and he did not stop breathing until he killed a fire dragon.[1][2]
- Perseverance in Old Age (A Rank): a Skill that embodies Beowulf's most well-known feats of slaying Grendel and Grendel's mother in his youth, and slaying a dragon in his old age as his final heroic act. Upgrade from Battle Continuation (Fate/Grand Order)
Noble Phantasms[]
Beowulf wields two Demonic Swords, Hrunting and Naegling, though they aren't where his true power lies.[2] His Main Noble Phantasm is Grendel Buster.
