Black Marie (黒いマリー?, localized as Dark Marie) is a character appearing in Fate/Grand Order.
Profile[]
Background[]
Appearance[]
Black Marie initially appears the same as Rider Marie Antoinette, but wearing different clothing resembling Little Red Riding Hood.
After she is exposed she takes the form an older and more voluptuous Marie. She mocks Erice and says this is just the result of Erice's guilt and fears manifesting, and Marie would never actually look like this. However the real Marie says that it's actually accurate, and that she's even wearing Marie's mourning dress.[1] This appearance is nearly identical to Marie Antoinette Alter's Third Ascension.
Personality[]
Black Marie is cold and haughty, saying that the masses exist to serve and revere her, the image of Marie Antoinette in the eyes of the people.[1]
Role[]
Fate/Grand Order[]
Board Game Apocalypse[]
She initially looks like, and is believed by everyone else to be, the real Marie Antoinette, but as the story goes on she loses Marie's usual upbeat personality. After being exposed by the real Marie, she then pretends to be another side of Marie's personality. Her true identity is revealed when Ritsuka Fujimaru realizes she couldn't know about Louis and Erice since Marie wasn't present for their encounter.[1]
While seemingly "Marie Antoinette Alter", Black Marie (黒いマリー?, localized as Dark Marie) is actually Erice Utsumi's Dread Spirits taking the form of Marie in response to Erice's connection to Louis XVII and her guilt over killing him. She seeks to drive Erice into despair, and says that deep down it's what Erice wants.[1]
The real Marie compares their relationship to the relationship between Jeanne d'Arc and Jeanne d'Arc Alter (who was also a copy created by a third party), calling her "my own personal Dragon Witch".[1]
Abilities[]
Her Saint Graph Designation is Avenger.
Black Marie can create a black mud-like substance, the same as Erice's Erlkönig. It spread until it threatened to consume Shinjuku, and various Japanese monsters spawned from it.[2]
Development[]
In the Orleans Singularity, when discussing Jeanne Alter with Jeanne, Marie alluded to Black Marie's possible existence by saying "If my version of the Dragon Witch appears, I would probably think 'oh, that's the other me'. And accept the things she says."[3] In regards to Black Marie's appearance, in the "Does Moon Goddess Dream of Dumplings?" event, Marie stated "Everything I eat goes right to my breasts. The more I eat, the bustier I get."[4]
Marie's Interlude "The Fragile Lily" also featured a dark version of Marie. This one was a Shadow Servant and represented the darker part of Marie's psyche who hates France for what the people did to her family.[5]
Black Marie's initial appearance, her Little Red Riding Hood costume, first appeared as the Craft Essence "Heroic Spirit Festive Wear: Marie Antoinette", released for Fate/Grand Order's 4th anniversary.
Creation and Conception[]
Black Marie was designed by Ginka in Fate/Grand Order.
