Blackmore Cemetery (ブラックモアの墓地?) is a graveyard in WalesWP where King Arthur's remains are kept. It is named after the Superior Dead Apostle Gransurg Blackmore. The village attached to the cemetery is the hometown of Gray and protected by Bersac Blackmore, the last descendant of the Blackmores.[1]

Characteristics[]

The cemetery and its village are located somewhere on a steep mountain[2] that takes five hours by bus from CardiffWP to reach.[3] The village is roughly the shape of an ellipse that has been squashed to the north and the south, similar to a gourd, with the village's church in the middle, a swamp to the south, a hunting lodge to the west, and a windmill on a tall hill to the north.[4] In the surrounding forest, on the far end of the swamp, is a small shack which Doctor Heartless stayed at while he secretly observed the village.[5] There is an extensive network of tunnels under the entire area, referred to as the "true" Blackmore Cemetery. Deep within the tunnels is an underground temple with a design based on Avalon which can raise up to the surface, appearing in the swamp. This temple is where the ceremony to turn Gray into King Arthur would be performed.[6]

Most of the buildings are built with stone bricks and look like they are at least a hundred years old. The population is probably only around a hundred people, with the inhabitants giving the impression that it wouldn't seem weird if they donned clothes from the last century. Since it is on such a steep hill, delivery trucks probably aren't be able to enter easily, so it is inevitable that it is so undeveloped.[2]

The village's church, tended to by Fernando Croze, is located at the northernmost end of the village. It is a simple church, with ivy-clad brick walls that resemble fish scales, and spacious inside, with the ceiling quite high, and the interior well-cleaned, giving it a quiet atmosphere. Though it isn’t grand, both the golden candelabras and the wooden pews are swept devoid of dust. Its most impressive feature is a Black Madonna statue. Though she still holds the infant Jesus in her arms, her stature seem different and full of majesty. She stands straight, and her gleaming eyes stares downwards. She seems more like a female general than a kind mother.[2] The people of the village worship the statue enthusiastically. On occasions like marriages or births they report it to the Holy Mother.[4]

Behind the church is the graveyard, a swamp surrounded by metal fencing and with only a couple of stone graves standing inside it. Next to the church is Bersac Blackmore's cabin, a small, dilapidated house looking more like a large storage cabinet.[2] The iron gate to the graveyard is decorated with patterns of ravens, which are sacred to the graveyard due to the historical connection to Gransurg Blackmore.[4] For centuries the grave keepers have chosen a child from the village to train and be their successor so that the line of grave keepers continues, and Bersac chose Gray. Reines describes it as being like the village and graveyard have a contract with each other.[4]

While it's not well-known in the mundane world, in the World of Magecraft, Blackmore Cemetery is probably one of the most famous graveyards in the world.[3] Strangely enough, despite its fame in World of Magecraft, its exact location is known by very few people.[3][7] The cemetery is tended to by a line of gravekeepers dating back hundreds of years, the most recent of whom is Bersac Blackmore. It holds one of the seven contracts of Atlas, which Morgan le Fay used long ago to make Atlas let the village use Logos React and also to have Atlas create Add for her.

There are several rules that those staying in the village must follow: they must pray to the Black Madonna statue when entering the village, must not go outside at night, never go to the graveyard alone, and never go to the swamp.[7] The cemetery's gravekeeper knows when someone breaks these rules through their authority, though isn't able to tell who it was.[8]

The village near Blackmore Cemetery is entrusted with caretaking Rhongomyniad, sealed inside Add, and is home to a cult led by "Grandmother" that has tried for centuries to create a perfect physical copy of King Arthur who could wield the spear. They both know the truth of King Arthur being a woman and worship her in a quiet way that wouldn't get the Holy Church to come after them.

There are less than one hundred inhabitants of the village. The village is divided into two factions, each one keeping their own secrets. One is the Blackmores, the lineage of mages that has guided souls and guarded the graveyard for thousands of years. The other is the group who wished for King Arthur’s return, the devotees of Morgan le Fay and King Arthur. Actually, most villagers don't belong to either faction. Though most of the villagers are focused on the resurrection of King Arthur now, some of them would be chosen periodically to be grave keepers, and others were fanatical believers in the Black Madonna. The role of the grave keepers had never been at odds with the revival of King Arthur, but both sides kept secrets from and held grudges against each other. And then, one day, the Holy Church also joined, assimilating the Black Madonna with the Virgin Mary of their own religion, and used that as a reason to take root in the village.[9] The Church's interest is in preventing the resurrection of King Arthur, as they deem it heretical.[10]

The villagers had mostly given up on the ritual and only spoke of it in traditions and folktales, but that changed ten years ago when Gray's appearance suddenly changed to be a splitting image of Artoria. Once Gray became a perfect vessel, they intended on using the dagger Erosion to cut out Gray's mind and soul from her body so that King Arthur's could inhabit it.

Role[]

Lord El-Melloi II Case Files[]

Two months before the start of the series Lord El-Melloi II came to Blackmore Cemetery hoping that one of its famous gravekeepers would join him in the upcoming Fifth Holy Grail War. With their expertise in dealing with spirits, he hoped working with one would give him an advantage against Servants. When the corpse of someone who looked just like Gray suddenly appeared, Bersac told El-Melloi II to take Gray to London and never return.

case. Atlas Contract[]

Six months later Gray and El-Melloi II returned to Blackmore Cemetery, along with Svin Glascheit and Flat Escardos. Gray wanted to learn what the corpse that had looked just like her had been, while El-Melloi II wanted to find a clue about Doctor Heartless who he believed had been in contact with Zepia Eltnam Atlasia. However when the group arrived at the village they found it completely empty as if the entire population had disappeared into thin air, except for Zepia who remained in his guest room at the windmill.

The reason for the village's abandonment was that all of the inhabitants had been sucked into Logos React when it started to malfunction due to the Corpse King's death, and Zepia had stayed behind to observe the haywire Superweapon. The trapped citizens were freed after Gray defeated the Corpse King's rampaging avatar.

Despite everything, the village's contract with Atlas that allowed them to use Logos React was still in place, and Grandmother continued to be fervent about wanting King Arthur's revival. But the villagers all believed Gray to be dead, and so with her chance to reunite the mind, body, and soul now gone there was nothing Grandmother could do.

Other appearances[]

In Fate/strange Fake Flat recalls his visit to Blackmore Cemetery and compares Pale Rider's dream world to Logos React. Hansa Cervantes reveals that he has also been there before and personally knows Fernando and Ilumia.[11]

Residents[]

The village's population is less than 100.

The land protected by Bersac Blackmore.
Originally, the land was inhabited by a family of magi that manipulated spirits, and regarded birds as sacred. The name Blackmore is apparently drawn from a powerful Dead Apostle connected to this family. Though the Dead Apostle in question perished some two thousand years ago, the family took his name as a sign of respect for him. At this point, that family’s original name is no longer known.
At any rate, that family has now become one of gravekeepers, and though temporarily, they have been entrusted with the remains of King Arthur.
