Canaan (カナン, Kanan?) (stylized as CANAAN) is a 13-episode anime television series, conceptualized by TYPE-MOON co-founders Nasu Kinoko and Takeuchi Takashi.

Story[]

Plot[]

Based on a bonus scenario created by TYPE-MOON for the game 428: Fūsa Sareta Shibuya deWP, Canaan's story is based on its eponymous protagonist. A Middle Eastern teenaged girl and a mercenary, Canaan is dispatched by her unknown superiors to the city of ShanghaiWP in the People's Republic of ChinaWP where she meets up with Maria Ōsawa. Now a photographer, Maria reunites with her friend Canaan after being saved from harassment during a trip to the Middle East years ago. Unknown to her, Maria suffers from partial amnesia since she had been the target of an attack by mysterious terrorists in Shibuya, TokyoWP who planted with the Ua virus in her before her father Kenji was able to save her life by using an anti-Ua virus vaccine created by the Okoshi Pharmaceutical company. Their presence in Shanghai, however, has been greatly overshadowed by the upcoming NBCR International Anti-Terrorist Conference in the same city where Alphard, Canaan's hated rival, plans to stage a terrorist attack with her subordinates known as "Snakes".

  • Hebi (蛇?, Snake) is a terrorist organization that Alphard leads. Hebi, in a joint venture with the CIA, created the Ua virus, which means flower of death in Swahili. It is a biological weapon of mass-destruction that kills its victims within twelve hours, causing parts of their bodies to bleed. The use of the virus in a bio-terrorist attack in Shibuya forms the background of 428: Fūsasareta Shibuya de. Oosawa Kenji develops an anti-virus.
  • Borners are individuals infected with the Ua virus but managed to survive. As a result, their bodies mutate and possess unusual abilities, with few exceptions (Yunyun, who gained an extra appendix due to the infection, does not have any special ability, for example). When someone becomes a Borner, blood vessels from a random part of his/her body would surface to form a mark with the shape of a flower. In order to suppress the virus, Borners require regular intakes of a special medication, or they will still die.
  • Unblooms are also victims of the Ua virus infections who survived before the advent of the anti-virus. They, too, have blood vessels from a random part of their bodies surfacing to form a mark with the shape of a flower. Unlike Borners, however, they did not gain any special ability or otherwise mutate, except that they become deathly vulnerable to UV rays and outside noises. Those individuals who venture outside the Factory must wear masks that look like a mascot head costume (and serve to shield the wearers from the aforementioned hazards), the removal of which invariably ends up killing them.

Development[]

The episodes of Canaan are directed by Masahiro Ando[1][2][3] and created under the direction of the Project CANAAN group[3] with Kinoko Nasu being the scenario director[2][3][4] P.A. WorksWP did the animation for Canaan.[5]

It was based on the scenario that they created for the Nintendo Wii visual novel 428: Fūsasareta Shibuya de, which is noted for being one of the few games to be have been awarded a perfect score by games publication Famitsu.

WorksWP doing the animation.[5][7] A 17-second commercial was later aired on the show's official website.[8] Comp AceWP magazine had announced on a flyer that its July issue will serialize Canaan's manga adaptation.[9]

Canaan was also scheduled to have a theatrical release of three movies compiling all of its 13 episodes starting in October, 2009.[10] However, said screenings never happened.
