Constantine XIWP (コンスタンティノス11世?), Class Name Rider (ライダー, Raidā?), is a Rider-class Servant summoned by Ritsuka Fujimaru in the Grand Orders of Fate/Grand Order.
Profile[]
Identity[]
Full name Constantine XI Dragases Palaiologos (コンスタンティノス11世パレオロゴス・ドラガセス?). The last emperor of the Byzantine Empire, the state also known as the Eastern Roman Empire. His death, and the fall of the capital city of ConstantinopleWP, marked the ultimate end of the great empire known as Rome. In the twilight of that empire, he fought til his very last breath.[1]
The Byzantine Empire, once a flourishing capital of trade, saw decline even before the religious conflicts between East and West, and even before the fierce attacks of the Ottoman EmpireWP. By the time Constantine ascended to the throne as emperor, his dominion had already stooped to consist solely of Constantinople and its environs.[1]
From the very moment he became emperor, it was already in such a life-and-death crisis that it could hardly be called an empire anymore. Constantine XI, great-great-great-great-grandson of Michael VIII — founder of the Palaiologos family — and his family were unable to repair the crumbling palace, and so they narrowly lived on in a small, barely habitable part of the building.[1]
Then, the young sultan, Mehmed II, decided to occupy Constantinople. He dispatched messengers to seek capitulation, but Constantine XI rejected them outright, and so commenced the hopeless defense of the siege. Constantine XI sent for reinforcements from neighbouring countries, but few of them dispatched any, and so in the end he went to meet the enemy forces with a meager assembly of soldiers and mercenaries.[1]
That desperate siege, said to have been fought by 100,000 to 7,000 men, lasted for two months thanks to the threefold walls stemming off the invasion, but even so, they ultimately fell.[1]
Appearance[]
Personality[]
He usually makes an effort to maintain a gentle tone, but takes on a rather crude tone during dire emergencies.[1]
A mild-mannered intellectual with a noble bearing. Though he might seem to treat resignation as a virtue, he is actually determined to "fight them with all that I possess". However, others have a hard time even perceiving that determination of his. Perhaps this stems from the fact that he was the last emperor of his empire, that is to say, a hero who succumbed alongside his state.[1]
"We will perish", "we will lose". He was convinced of this, yet "even so, we have to fight with all that we possess." To an outsider looking on from the side, this contradictory state of mind would seem a logical matter of course to this man.[1]

Role[]
Fate/Grand Order[]
Chaldea Boys Collection 2022[]
Constantine defeated one of the mass produced monsters before the arrival of Chaldea, sapping his strength to the point where he is not capable of fighting as a Servant. Initially assuming the name Michael (マイケル?) due to the shame of lacking his normal strength associated with his True Name, he aids Chaldea.
Realm of the Thanatos Impulse: Traum[]
Summer Event: Arctic Summer World[]
Whilst not appearing as an NPC, Constantine is mentioned in the news ticker being cheered on by Ibuki-douji as part of her "Midsummer Cheerling Squad" as he bows his head to the other Roman Servants.
Abilities[]
Constantine XI is a renowned Heroic Spirit famed for protecting his city from a prolongued siege while outmatched and outnumbered.[3][5] Kriemhild considers his talent for defense almost maddening.[3] However, Sherlock Holmes and Vlad III agree that he can't begin to compare to Charles the Great. If the Righteous Realm was truly leaded by Charles during the Traum Singularity, their victory would be a foregone conclusion.[4]
Combat[]
In his battle animations in FGO, Constantine is seen summoning soldiers from his armies, calling in volleys from arrows, cannons, and trebuchets, and striking foes with a large metal chain which appears to be telekinetically controlled by him. His soldiers are shown wielding two-handed swords, one-handed swords with shields, and grenades containing Greek fireWP. In one of his attacks, he is seen holding his sword in a defensive stance, then unleashing a beam of rainbow-colored light from it. His sword can also be seen glowing with a different, golden light when he performs other attacks. The source of these abilities is unknown, and they may be a product of a Noble Phantasm of his not yet detailed in FGO or its supporting materials.
He rides a white horse in combat.
Holy Grail[]
During the events of the Traum Singularity, Constantine is stronger than normal due to being the holder of the Reinstatement Realm's Holy Grail. The backup of the grail is powerful enough to transform an ordinary soldier into a warrior worthy of being sent to Valhalla or a true warrior into a hero. In the case of Constantine, who was an already existing hero, he makes a formidable opponent to Chaldea, just like Kriemhild.[5]
Don Quixote powered by the Righteous Realm's own Holy Grail is able to endure multiple attacks from Constantine XI. Due to this, Constantine recognizes him as a formidable foe that brings him joy. While Constantine eventually overpowers and gravely injures him, Quixote refuses to back down and keeps fighting him regardless. However, Constantine would have killed him had Charlemagne not intervened.[7]
Skills[]
Class Skills[]
- Magic Resistance (B+ Rank)[1]
Personal Skills[]
- Independent Action (C++ Rank)[1]
- Prayer of Hagia Sophia (C- Rank): Possesses the protection of the cathedral of Hagia SophiaWP. Unfortunately, it is not expected to be particularly effective in modern times.[1]
- Twilit Empire (EX Rank): The last emperor of the Byzantine Empire (the Eastern Roman Empire). Constantine XI was the last emperor of the Roman Empire, and when Constantinople fell to Mehmed II, the state — all that flowed from Rome — met complete cessation.[1]
- Quietus Privilege (C Rank): A variation of the skill Imperial Privilege. Certain skills not originally possessed can be acquired for a short time if the user asserts themselves. As the last emperor, he is not able to possess an extensive selection of privileges, and furthermore, he wastes a great deal of Magical Energy each time he exercises a privilege. However, Constantine, who faded away on the battlefield as a mere soldier, is able to bequeath those privileges to others.[1]
Noble Phantasm[]
Constantine's Noble Phantasm is Theodosius Constantinos, which summons the three-layered walls of Constantinople. Although this Noble Phantasm promises to safeguard a vast range, encapturing a maximum of 7000 people, as the number of people increases, the likelihood that it will fall rises, diluting the bestowed protection.[1] Legend tells that Constantinople's walls fell because someone forgot to lock a single gate. Due to this, there will always be a gap in his defenses, even if it were no bigger than the eye of a needle.[8] Constantine himself considers 1000 people to be the limit if the aim is to actually provide stable defenses. When summoned by Chaldea, he constructs an even more robust fortification, utilizing his Noble Phantasm on the Master and party alone.[1]
While this Noble Phantasm is powered by the Reinstatement Realm's Holy Grail, even Astolfo can only break one of its three layers. Despite Roland being present, Astolfo believes that it would be the same for anyone else trying to brute force it. He claims that it feels as if those walls emobodied the entire concept of defense, so they would probably need a Servant on the same level as Mehmed II to even have a chance of getting past them.[6] Although powerful enough to block weakened Charlemagne's Joyeuse Ordre,[7] Minamoto-no-Tametomo's Instant Sinking Moonbow was able to break through one of its gaps from 21.3 kilometers away, destroying it completely and mortally wounding him.[8] However, Sherlock Holmes believes that it he only pierced Constantine's defenses he had been empowered by a Leyline at the time.[9]
