EMIYA Alter[Note 1] (エミヤ オルタ, Emiya Oruta?), Class Name Archer (アーチャー, Āchā?), is an Archer-class Servant summoned by Ritsuka Fujimaru in the Grand Orders of Fate/Grand Order.
Profile[]
Identity[]
Not the Mumei (無銘, lit. "nameless"; per Extra, 銘 refers to the naming of a blade?) that was borne of society, but a disgraced, heartless executor (執行者, shikkousha?, lit. "one who enacts") who has cast aside his own name.[1]
His memories are damaged, and his past is similarly lost. The man has forsaken morality, and scorned the bonds of affection—sneering at himself who has become as a dead man walking as he continues along his way.[1]
Of course, should the life of a single human vary to such an extent, a reason necessarily exists.[1]
That which abased the spirit of the man who was as the steel of a sword is said to have been a woman akin to the Holy Mother in her compassion. The price that the man came to pay in pursuing the subjugation of her Malice (魔性, masei?, lit. "demonic nature"; often used to refer to "demonic allure") was the 'disposal' of her many followers, including his own guardian and her son; by their martyrdom did he fall to the Path of the Heretics (魔道, madou?, lit. "demonic path"; in Buddhism, a walk of existence beyond the Six PathsWP, from which there can be no salvation).[1]
Appearance[]
EMIYA Alter, in contrast to his natural self, has a more shaven hair-style, a duller skin tone, and golden eyes. His outfit consists of black sleeves with golden accents ending in thick metal manacles, black pants with a weave pattern, and white boots, rather than the red overcoat Mystic Code of his counterpart. He also lacks his counterparts torso armor. His back also shows a crimson "IV" tattoo. In his Second Ascension, he gains a waistcoat, and orange lines of corruption spread across his body, changing to gold in his Third Ascension and losing the sleeves he wore.
In the North American version of the game, EMIYA Alter's skin tone is lightened to be the same as the normal EMIYA's.
Personality[]
Absent of ideals; absent of ideology—and consequently of the highest efficiency. Virtually as a machine—or so the nameless antihero self-proclaims. Being that the foundation of his existence is in some portions corrupted, he ushers forth merciless slaughter to the pursuit of his goals.[1] Once he wished to save everyone, but he came to forget his reasons for doing so.
EMIYA Alter's memories of his previous life are fragmented at best and for the most part have been lost completely. It is implied that were they to be restored, the part of him who was once Shirou Emiya would cause his Spirit Origin to self-destruct out of sheer disgust over what he has become. As far as EMIYA Alter is concerned, he is nothing more than a living weapon to be used and disposed of as his Master sees fit.
Relationships[]

Role[]
Fate/Grand Order[]
Subspecies Singularity I: Shinjuku[]
EMIYA Alter is contracted to kill Baal. He joins the Phantom Demon Alliance since it gave a greater probablity of achieving his goal, knowing there would be no repercussion for destruction in a culled timeline.[8] He also killed the Saber and Lancer members of the Alliance when they deserted.[9]
In Barrel Tower, Baal informs his compatriots that Chaldea has sent Ritsuka into the Singularity. He hacked the Rayshift coordinates to make them fall, but it didn’t go so well. After the meeting, he orders EMIYA Alter to command the flying squad. He also points out EMIYA Alter still hasn’t disposed of the Phantom. EMIYA Alter compares Phantoms to brainwashing devices, but Baal says they’re nothing more than ability enhancers. EMIYA Alter refuses to have one fused into him, preferring to stay nameless, also suspecting a botched transplant could affect his Spirit Origin. Baal tries to assure it’s perfectly safe, having spent 3000 years developing it. EMIYA Alter then leaves to double check the sniper spot he picked out earlier before things get hectic with Chaldea’s arrival.[9]
He later leads a squadron of Hornets to Jeanne Alter’s territory to kill her. He fights her until she uses La Grondement Du Haine to force him to retreat. Retreating to a nearby rooftop and still feeling the heat, he recognizes the flames were made from Jeanne Alter’s imagination since she never experienced the flames that killed the real Jeanne d’Arc. He slightly regrets he couldn’t use her one-track mind to sic her on targets, but he recognizes such explosive power would only complicate matters. He then leaves, thinking she killed herself with that attack.[10]
He later kills the Phantom of the Opera by triggering an explosive inside the singer’s body before he can divulge James Moriarty’s connection to the Alliance. He doesn’t give his exact reasons, finding it weird for Moriarty to ask. Moriarty asks him if he knows his True Name. EMIYA Alter refuses to say anything, and prepares to kill Ritsuka and Moriarty. They get ready to fight when Yan Qing, disguised as Hassan of the Cursed Arm, arrives and convinces EMIYA Alter to retreat.[11]
Emiya Alter returns to Barrel Tower to report he killed the Phantom, which Baal already knew. He is confused why Yan Qing is risking getting close to Ritsuka’s party. Baal replies Yan Qing cannot resist the temptation of observing people up close to see if they’re worth transforming into, which EMIYA Alter finds that risky. Baal agrees, yet also calls it glorious and arrogant, and notes Yan Qing could kill anyone at a moment’s notice. EMIYA Alter compares Yan Qing to an evil sentient time bomb that could go off at any moment in that case. Baal then instructs him to inspect the progress of Shakespeare’s monsters, as King Lear is nearly complete.[12]
After Hessian Lobo is killed, EMIYA Alter asks Baal if the “magic bullet“ is already on its way. Baal answers it isn’t yet, and says only they can protect Barrel Tower now. EMIYA Alter decides to prepare an ambush outside, which it if works, Ritsuka’s party will be caught in a pincer attack at the tower’s base. Baal warns Sherlock Holmes would deduce that strategy instantly. EMIYA Alter responds the battlefield isn’t a place for cold deduction, only chaos and fervor. He leaves to execute his strategy after Baal admits he isn’t useful when it comes to practical tactics.[13]
He orders his Hornets to get into position, suit up for heavy combat, and use anti-Demonic Beast gear if needed. He continues to keep the Servants pinned down with a steady stream of gunfire using cursed armor-piercing ammo. After the Hornets leave with their orders, EMIYA Alter notes they stand no chance against Artoria Alter. He then calls a fool Ritsuka for willingly to meet their end here after saving the world and wrong for thinking they can save Shinjuku. Eventually the Hornets detect a approaching motorcycle, and open fire on it thinking Artoria Alter is on it. EMIYA Alter goes to confirm her disappearance, but upon inspecting the motorcycle, he realizes it was a decoy. He then detects a Servant nearby, shocked when Ritsuka and Artoria Alter come from above. He asks her how they did that, saying they would’ve detected and disrupted any Command Spell energy. Artoria Alter tells him they arrived via a makeshift launcher. The two fight When EMIYA Alter notices his Hornets are under attack by Coloraturas sent by Sherlock. Moriarty deploys a smokescreen, which Artoria Alter uses to switch a Hornet with a disguised Moriarty. EMIYA Alter sees through the disguise, and shoots at him. Nonetheless, he allows Moriarty to enter the tower, as Baal has been expecting him. He then follows in after Ritsuka’s party, ordering the Hornets to blow up the entryway to seal it once he’s inside.[13]
He ambushes Baal once he and Moriarty reveal themselves to be collaborators. Baal knew EMIYA Alter meant to kill him when he joined the Alliance. EMIYA Alter in turn knew Baal planned to use him as a disposable tool. He helps Ritsuka’s party, fighting Baal while Ritsuka and Artoria Alter fight Moriarty.[8] They defeat their respective opponents, but Bennu suddenly appears in the sky above Shinjuku, having become a magic bullet. EMIYA Alter goes with Artoria Alter to intercept it now that he’s achieved his objective. After Moriarty is defeated, Bennu ceases being a magic bullet, allowing EMIYA Alter to shatter it with Unlimited Lost Works. Artoria Alter then destroys the pieces with Excalibur Morgan. Afterwards, EMIYA Alter sees her ride off on her motorcycle to visit somewhere before she disappeared. Returning inside, he commends Ritsuka for their leadership. He offers to help them for a price if they’re not enemies when he’s summoned again and disappears.[14]
Subspecies Singularity: SE.RA.PH[]
Switched with his regular self by BB, EMIYA Alter ends up at the Thighs near the chapel. From its roof, he watches Ritsuka’s party fighting through and exploring SE.RA.PH. When they come to the chapel, he reveals there is a terminal hidden behind the altar that contains a report. However, it is locked to even Servants and Alter Egos, so its key needs to be found. The group believes the report may contain a clue, and decide to search for the key tomorrow.[15]
After purchasing the terminal key from BB, Ritsuka uses it on the terminal. After Ritsuka views the record, EMIYA Alter isn’t particularly surprised the Seraphix crew fell into violent mass hysteria. Meltryllis reveals the planetarium is in the middle of SE.RA.PH, and it’s the source of the digitization. Ritsuka, Meltryllis and Gawain decide to continue exploring while Tristan and Mable Macintosh stay in the chapel. EMIYA Alter leaves to kill the Servants.[15]
Joining Ritsuka’s party at the final zone of the Flank Seperator, he agrees with Meltryllis that it would be easier to kill Tamamo Cat than to recruit her, saying unreliable allies are more troublesome than tough opponents. The group eventually encounters and fights Cat. After she is defeated, EMIYA Alter seemingly fatally shoots her. However, she lives because he used his knowledge of Magic Circuits to target and destroy the parts of her Spirit Origin infected by the Karmaphage. Now free of BB’s control, Cat joins the group.[16]
Returning to the chapel, the group notes the areas they have left to explore. Meltryllis reveals SE.RA.PH. has a two layer structure, with a front side and back side. Humans and Servants cannot cross the border between the sides though, only Sentinels can. Thus, the only way to get to the back side would be to flip SE.RA.PH over. Ritsuka realizes there is a way to flip SE.RA.PH. Meltryllis reveals they can reach the Command Room through the back side, where they can flip SE.RA.PH. again to arrive at the Chest. While this method will help them bypass Breast Valley, they’ll still need to fight Passionlip. EMIYA Alter questions Ritsuka’s lack of fear of Alter Egos, only understanding it with Meltryllis not Passionlip. After Ritsuka gives their answer, Meltryllis reveals Passionlip will help if her restraints are destroyed. EMIYA Alter agrees to accompany the group to the back side, but refuses to fight Passionlip.[16]
Outside, while the others are asleep, he expresses his disbelief that they survived this far, and calls it wasteful for them to explore SE.RA.PH or try to solve the mystery of Seraphix. He therefore finds BB’s proposal of killing every Servant very appealing. He calls the Moon Cell an unlimited Holy Grail capable of falsifying the past in the spiritron world, and finds most Heroic Spirit (including himself) can’t resist that temptation.. He considers it naïve to believe everyone is acting purely out of the goodness of their hearts.[16]
The group arrive at the Flank Separator. Ritsuka hits the Separator using a tickling hand they bought from BB, and SE.RA.PH starts shaking. BB sends a Sentinel, Elizabeth Bathory, to punish them for their transgression. The group defeat her, but Passionlip begins approaching. Gawain holds her off, while Ritsuka successfully flips SE.RA.PH.[16]
Arriving on the back side, EMIYA Alter considers Gawain’s “sacrifice“ necessary to ensure they could get to the back side safely without losing anyone else. Suzuka Gozen greets the group. She ignores BB’s orders to escort them and fights them. After the fight, BB orders her to return to the temple. Suzuka tells the group to check out the Nape if they plan to head to the Command Room. She then leaves saying the Seraphix’s crew brought the crisis on themselves, and Seraphix was never just an oil rig.[17][18]
The group soon comes to a gate reserved for employees that reported directly to the Animuspheres. They’re forced to destroy its defenses when they fail to present identification. They eventually meet Robin Hood again, and he warns them Passionlip is waiting for them on the front side. He also reveals BB developed a weapon that can break “the shackles” on Passionlip’s heart, along with her restraints. He then takes everyone except EMIYA Alter back to the front side. BB then offers EMIYA Alter a chance of survival if he kills every surviving human on SE.RA.PH, and captures Ritsuka. If he does that, he’ll learn the secret about SE.RA.PH, as part of his job as Counter Guardian. EMIYA Alter promptly agrees to join BB, admitting he was getting tired of helping Ritsuka’s group.[17]
He returns to the chapel before the others returned with Arnold Beckman and Passionlip. He says he wants to confirm something, and having Seraphix personnel will make it easier. After Ritsuka views the record, EMIYA Alter surmises Zepar somehow learned of the Moon Holy Grail War from a different timeline, and summoned BB to transform Seraphix into SE.RA.PH so he can be reborn. Meltryllis reveals BB summoned Servants to procure the Pseudo-Spiritrons needed to keep SE.RA.PH running and use their deaths from the “Moon Holy Grail War” as a fuel source. The group decides to defeat the Sentinels and BB before stopping Zepar’s plan.[17]
The next morning, everyone discovers Gawain was killed while they were sleeping. Meltryllis and Passionlip are accused by everyone except Ritsuka and Cat because they’re Alter Egos. Meltryllis asserts they were outside at the time, and Gawain was too wary of her to allow her to ambush him. Seeing the lack of evidence, Tristan asks Ritsuka to continue exploring SE.RA.PH while he continues to stay behind to protect Mable and Arnold. He also asks EMIYA Alter to accompany Ritsuka so they can monitor him. He is suspicious of both the Alter Egos and EMIYA Alter, but he understands the Alter Egos wish to protect Ritsuka while EMIYA Alter isn’t especially concerned. Thus, he’ll have the Alter Egos protect Ritsuka while EMIYA Alter monitors the Alter Egos.[17]
Returning to the back side, the group head towards the Spine, the center of SE.RA.PH. Suzuka’s temple is there, and she is charged with the back side. However, the group finds the Spine has been gated off. They’re then contacted by Beckman, ordering them to flip SE.RA.PH once they’re at the spine to arrive at the planetarium. He also reveals SE.RA.PH will the reach the bottom of the trench in 15 real world minutes, or 24 hours in SE.RA.PH time. He ends his transmission, saying he’ll meet them at the planetarium.[19]
Entering the Spine, the group soon arrives at Suzuka’s temple. Suzuka proves too fast and strong for them to pin her long enough for Ritsuka to open her Maiden Coaster. Arnold suddenly contacts them to warn SE.RA.PH has started to sink faster, so he orders them to defeat Suzuka quicker. Cat uses her ultimate technique to trap Suzuka in response to her conviction to win for her Master. Ritsuka uses this opportunity to open Suzuka’s Maiden Coaster with the key they bought from BB earlier. Following the mental battle, Suzuka tries to jump off a cliff. Cat stops her, though, and convinces her to join them. Suddenly, a Demon God emerges from the ground and knocks Meltryllis into the dump. After it’s killed, Beckman warns there are only eight hours left before SE.RA.PH reaches the seabed and demands that they return to him at once, saying he’ll accompany them to the planetarium. When Ritsuka decides to save Meltryllis, Suzuka asks EMIYA Alter if he has something they could use to descend into the Trash Dump. He answers he can provide a tow cable, though it can only be extended up to 5 km with magical energy. He then asks Suzuka who’ll be accompanying Ritsuka, to which she says herself. Passionlip is too heavy for the cable, and Cat is too exhausted from her earlier spellwork. Suzuka and Ritsuka then use the tow cable provided by EMIYA Alter to descend into the dump.[19]
Once Ritsuka and Suzuka are in the dump, EMIYA Alter cuts the cable, and leaves for the chapel. There he kills Beckman before the latter could finish ordering him to retrieve a case of toxins from the sickbay that he planned to use on Ritsuka. After killing Mable, he declares the Animusphere experiment that Seraphix was built for will never be repeated. He prepares to go to and destroy the planetarium when someone with a familiar Spirit Origin taunts him. They remind him of the cult he slaughtered, even though the only evil person there was the woman who founded it. They are that same woman he killed after massacring the other members who tried to protect her. She also reveals she was the one that consumed Gawain and prepares to kill EMIYA Alter next.[19]
He isn’t killed though, and goes to the planetarium where the others went to. Failing to ambush them, he destroys the Coffins’ power source, and explains the Coffins’ purpose. Then, to remove all knowledge of the planetarium’s existence, EMIYA Alter prepares to kill Ritsuka, goaded by the unseen voice as his Spirit Origin is warped. Ritsuka’s party kill him with the help of Robin.[20]
Later, with his remaining consciousness, he destroys Kiara Sessyoin‘s Demon God hair entangling Meltryllis, thwarting Kiara’s attempt to possess Meltryllis after her heart was crushed. Kiara boasts to EMIYA Alter he can destroy her Demon Gods all he wants, as she can still use her arms to capture Meltryllis before they’re destroyed from the movement. EMIYA Alter counters she loves her body too much, declaring that her narcissism will be her downfall. He then puts a cable around Meltryllis’s waist, and Tristan pulls her up to safety. Seeing Meltryllis off, he tells Kiara that she’ll only sink like a stone with her current body. He then uses the last of his strength to fire a last shot at Kiara.[21]
The manga adaptation includes more events, such as two new Sentinels, EMIYA Alter's private investigation into Seraphix, and lastly a look into EMIYA Alter's backstory.[22][23][24][25]
Board Game Apocalypse[]
Event: CBC2023 Tales of Chaldean Heavy Industries ~B to B for Me and You~[]
Abilities[]
EMIYA Alter is regarded as a B rank Servant by BB.[18]
Combat[]
In the Shinjuku Singularity, he was shown able to deflect Jeanne d'Arc Alter's La Grondement Du Haine with his shield allowing him to retreat[10] and crack Bennu from the inside with his Noble Phantasm.[14]
Skills[]
Class Skills[]
- Independent Action (A Rank): The ability to be able to act independently for a period even if Magical Energy supply from the Master is severed. In cases where vast quantity of magic energy is needed, such as during usage of Noble Phantasm, backup from the Master is necessary .[6]
- Magic Resistance (D Rank): Invalidates single action magic usage.[6]
Personal Skills[]
- Bulletproof Treatment (A Rank): A Skill that may very well be called "Protection from Arrows” by means of the most modern Heroic Spirits. It’s designated as bulletproof, but strictly speaking most projectiles can be repelled.[6]
- Projection Magecraft (C-> A+ Rank): A magic that reproduces tools by his image for but several minutes. The pair of swords that Archer favored, Kanshou and Bakuya, was something created by means of projection magic as well. Its rank rapidly increases only when the projection subject is categorized as “sword”. Through the special trait of “able to prepare counterfeits many times over”, Emiya momentarily increases the power of the projected Noble Phantasms by making them crash and detonates.[6] His primary weapons are modified versions of Kanshou and Bakuya, capable of firing Broken Phantasms. He is also shown in his ascensions wielding a set of Kanshou and Bakuya in a merged, double voulge style, and lacking the Yin-Yang symbols in their centers.
- Trace On: Circuit Connect (Unlawful) (B+ Rank): Upgrade from Projection Magecraft in Fate/Grand Order.
- Derisive Heart of Steel (A Rank): A Mental Pollution Skill granted upon being inverted. Unlike Mental Pollution, it is able to force in the designated concept; close to a kind of brainwashing. The thought bestowed to him makes the protection of Human Order the priority; deeming the way of Guardians which forsakes everything other than that to be acceptable. Were this man not endowed with A-rank, he would not have been able to sufficiently exhibits the power of his inversion status.[6]
Noble Phantasm[]
EMIYA Alter's Noble Phantasm is Unlimited Lost Works.
Development[]
Creation and Conception[]
EMIYA Alter was designed by Shounen Sasaki in Fate/Grand Order.[1] his scenario writers are Kinoko Nasu and Yuuichirou Higashide in Fate/Grand Order.
His creation was insisted upon by Takashi Takeuchi who wanted to see an EMIYA Alter, even though Nasu stated there wouldn't normally be an EMIYA Alter.
Comment from Illustrator[]
"EMIYA who is very much out of the usual… I’ve drawn him in high spirit with who knows how many words that came out during the exchange with TYPE-MOON, strengthening the image of “EMIYA who upon further thinking looks like a prisoner!” Afterwards, his voice, his meager setting development, as well as his story began to take form, becoming a character; his role nimbly jumps over my image of him, heading into an unthinkable, heartrending direction that left a deep impression." (Shounen Sasaki)[6]

Pseudo-nerves within the body of a magus.
Magic circuits are responsible for converting life force into magical energy, and for connecting to the underlying grand sorcery formula.
Because the number of magic circuits a person has is fixed at birth, magi lineages do what they can to improve themselves and create an heir with even one more magic circuit.
Once the magic circuits have been opened for the first time, the practitioner can switch them on and off at will.
Each practitioner visualizes the flipping of this switch in their own particular way. For Shirou, the image is that of a gun's firing hammer, while for Rin it is stabbing a heart with a knife.
This image tends to be related to how the circuits were opened for the very first time, so there even those who can only open their circuits through sexual arousal or self-harm.
By the way, Shirou's number of magic circuits is an unexpectedly high 27.
Rin, on the other hand, has 40 main circuits, while her sub-circuits are 30 each.魔術回路【魔術】
