Map of Edo and surrounding areas in Fate/Samurai Remnant.
EdoWP (江戸?) was a city in historical Japan, specifically the old name for Tokyo. Edo is the setting of the Waxing Moon Ritual in Fate/Samurai Remnant, as well as the Edo Singularity in Fate/Grand Order.[1][2]
History[]
Rivaling Kyoto and OsakaWP in size, this metropolis is known for having numerous neighborhoods nestled within it. Though Edo was once a patch of wild wetlands with few inhabitants, the area began undergoing gradual development after Ota DoukanWP constructed Edo Castle there. After emerging victorious from the decisive battle of Sekigahara, Tokugawa Ieyasu chose to establish the shogunate in Edo in 1603, turning it into the seat of Japan's new government.[3]
As Ieyasu was establishing Edo, it is said that he received help from the Tendai monk Nankoubou Tenkai. The city of Edo is in fact one giant Spirit Font. Above ground, temples serve as protections against the arrival of evil spirits from unlucky directions. Beneath the surface lies a veritable mesh of Leylines. Though Edo's topography has led to it being called a city of water, as it was meticulously designed by preeminent mages, it could also be called a city of Magecraft.[3]
Some time before Lady Kasuga died in 1643, a Singularity formed in Edo when Kama took over Edo Castle.
In 1651, Edo was host to the Waxing Moon Ritual. Edo's rich magical history and powerful spiritual land was taken into account when devising the ritual.[3]
Edo was renamed Tokyo in 1868.
Locations[]
Akasaka[]
AkasakaWP (赤坂?) is the territory of Zheng Chenggong in Fate/Samurai Remnant. It is a town where several daimyo of high status reside, such as the Kishu Tokigawa. It is a particularly favorable Spirit Font and contains the Tokugawa family temple, Zojo-ji.[3]

Asakusa[]

Asakusa in Fate/Samurai Remnant.
AsakusaWP (浅草?) is the home town of Miyamoto Iori and the land which the Rogue Servant Gilgamesh is tied to in Fate/Samurai Remnant. Many visitors travel here from other neighborhoods in Edo to worship at Senso-ji. The visitors describe the town as very lively, though it pales in comparison to the hustle and bustle of a true city. Iori lives in a particularly secluded corner of Asakusa.[3] Gilgamesh has established a shop here named Babiloni-ya (巴比倫弐屋?).
Asakusa is the location of the final battle in Fate/Samurai Remnant's "Entreat the Darkness" route.
Edo Castle[]
Edo CastleWP (江戸城?) is the residence of the Tokugawa family and the seat of Japan's government. It stands majestically in the heart of the city, asserting the authority of the daimyo and the Shogun's family. Once nothing more than a small castle built by Ota Doukan, it underwent additional construction and outfitting over the course of a few decades after Tokugawa Ieyasu made it his home.[3] All of the leylines of the entire Kanto region converge under Edo Castle.[4]
Chaldea travels here during the Edo Singularity in Fate/Grand Order, and it is the location of the final battle in Fate/Samurai Remnant's "Flames of Resentment" route.
Futago[]
Futago (二子?) is a farming area south of Todoroki, facing the Tamagawa river. The ferry boats along the river act as vital means of transport, for there are no bridges. The crossing points for the boats often have to be rebuilt because they are washed away every time the river floods.[3]
Kanagawa Port[]
Kanagawa Port (神奈川湊?) is a fishing port sprawling out before Edo and the land which the Rogue Servant Arjuna is tied to in Fate/Samurai Remnant. Lodging areas built near the Tokaido make it a vital transport point with a lot of traffic. The mountain Gongenyama holds a ruined castle.[3]
Kanda[]
KandaWP (神田?) is the territory of Yui Shousetsu and the land which the Rogue Servant Li Shuwen is tied to in Fate/Samurai Remnant. It is located in northeastern Edo. Much like Ueno's Kan'ei-ji and Asakusa's Senso-ji, Kanda's shrine was built to protect Edo Castle from evil spirits. The market in the town draws many looking for fresh produce.[3]
Kan'ei-ji[]
Kan'ei-jiWP (寛永寺?) is the territory of Tsuchimikado Yasuhiro in Fate/Samurai Remnant. It is a temple in Ueno created to protect both Edo and the shogunate, as Ueno is located to the unlucky northeast of Edo Castle. It is heavily guarded and maintained by the shogunate because it is the Tokugawa family temple. One of its many famous landmarks is the Ueno Great Buddha, said to be made in the likeness of the original in Kyoto.[3]
Koishikawa[]
Koishikawa (小石川?) is the territory of Chiemon and the land which the Rogue Servant Circe is tied to in Fate/Samurai Remnant. A desolate area in northern Edo. Though there used to be farming villages near the Denzu-in temple, few live here now. The name means "river of small stones", referencing the rock-filled river in the area.[3]
Nihonbashi[]
NihonbashiWP (日本橋?) is a prominent shopping area centered on a bridge that connects Sumidagawa and Edo Castle. it is the starting point of all five major highways that spread across Japan. It contains the Uogashi fish market and a bell tower that rings every hour, which was originally housed in Edo Castle.[3]
Okachimachi[]
Okachimachi (御徒町?) is Edo's entertainment district. Its name is derived from the many low ranking soldiers (okachi) who live here. The town features various circus tents and animal shows.[3]
Setagaya[]
SetagayaWP (世田谷?) is a plateau with several villages in southern Edo. It has an abundance of natural beauty with a peaceful atmosphere, contrasting the urban bustle of other parts of the city. The grave of an ancient king lies along the Tamagawa river.[3]
Shinagawa[]
ShinagawaWP (品川?) is a port town and post station along the Tokaido Highway, a major road connecting eastern and western Japan. It has many inns and serves as a major waystation to and from Edo with plenty of merchant traffic.[3]
Suidobashi[]
Suidobashi (水道橋?) is one of Edo's most prominent mansion districts. The Tokugawa family and the various daimyo live here. The name means "waterway bridge", coming from the water conduits installed in the nearby Kanda River.[3]
Tamanawa[]
Tamanawa (玉縄?) is a region technically located just outside Edo. It has become popular for having many famous places such as Kotoku-in, a temple with the Kamakura Great Buddha statue. Tamanawa Castle atop a hill in the area was recently abandoned by the shogun's decree, but it continues to be maintained by the Matsudaira family, the daimyo of Tamanawa.[3]
Todoroki[]
Todoroki is the land which the Rogue Servant Kiso Yoshinaka is tied to in Fate/Samurai Remnant. It is a valley with abundant natural beauty. The Fudo Falls at Todoroki Fudoson and Jinben Cavern along the Tamagawa river have long been held as spiritual places. Monks from all over Japan come to train here.[3]
Torikoe Shrine[]
Torikoe Shrine (鳥越神社?) is a shrine located on the outskirts of Asakusa, dedicated to Yamato Takeru. Overgrown with trees, the shrine grounds have a peaceful, solemn ambiance. It was once called Shiratori (white bird) shrine, from a story of a military group who were shown a path to cross the nearby river by white birds. The current name Torikoe (bird-passing) also comes from this story.[3]
Ueno[]
UenoWP (上野?) is the land which the Rogue Servant Tamamo Aria is tied to in Fate/Samurai Remnant. It is a plateau northeast of Edo Castle, which is considered unlucky because oni and demons are said to come from that direction. Large numbers of lotus flowers bloom in the summer here at Shinobazu Pond, making the area resemble the Buddhist pure land. As such it attracts crowds of tourists.[3]
Yokosuka[]
YokosukaWP (横須賀?) is a port town technically located outside of Edo, and the territory of Dorothea Coyett in Fate/Samurai Remnant. As an important point on the Kanto shipping industry, ships from all over Japan constantly pass through. The Tomyodo Lighthouse is built at the entrance to the port.[3] Many buildings in the area are constructed in a European style because of the Dutch traders.
Yoshiwara[]

Yoshiwara in Fate/Samurai Remnant.
YoshiwaraWP (吉原?) is the red-light district of Edo and is the territory of Takao Dayu and the land which the Rogue Servant Samson is tied to in Fate/Samurai Remnant. Its name is said to derive from the fields of weeds, or "yoshi", which were in the area before it became the pleasure quarter. The only entrance to the town is the Daimon Gate.[3]
Zojo-ji[]
Zojo-jiWP (増上寺?) is a temple near Akasaka and the land which the Rogue Servant Cú Chulainn is tied to in Fate/Samurai Remnant. Though originally built elsewhere, it was moved to its current location after being selected as the Tokugawa family temple. As it lies in the direct opposite direction from Ueno's Kan'ei-ji, it is believed to also protect Edo Castle from evil spirits. The temple's Sangedatsumon Gates are said to purge worldly desires of those who pass through them and put them on the path to reach the Buddhist pure land SukhavatiWP.[3]
