The El-Melloi Classroom (エルメロイ教室, Erumeroi Kyōshitsu?) is a classroom at the Clock Tower. It is run by Lord El-Melloi II as part of the Department of Modern Magecraft Theory, but it used to be run by Kayneth El-Melloi Archibald as part of the Department of Spiritual Evocation.[1]
The classroom's building is located in an area of London called Slur Street.[2]
Most of the students collectively serve as the Masters of True Rider Hippolyta in the True and False Holy Grail Wars of Fate/strange Fake.
History[]
Previously one of several classrooms run by Kayneth El-Melloi Archibald, Waver Velvet purchased it with funds borrowed from Melvin Weins. The item purchased is specifically “the right to have a classroom in the headquarters of the Clock Tower.” Compared to being "something like a castle," the cost of purchase is similarly "enough money to buy a castle."[3]
Teaching classes under the Department of Modern Magecraft Theory for three years, noted to be an impressive achievement for a Magus without backing, Waver was granted the title of Lord El-Melloi II due to the machinations of Reines El-Melloi Archisorte and became the Lord of the Department of Modern Magecraft Theory.[4] For a time, the El-Melloi Classroom was the only place of study for Modern Magecraft Theory, so some in the Clock Tower use the El-Melloi Classroom interchangeably with the Department itself despite it being only a single part of the actual Department. The Department eventually grew considerably in terms of staff and students due to the Classroom's influence.[3]
The Classroom consists of a regular small seminar for around fifteen core students and thirty-five auditing studentsWP. Due to the popularity of Lord El-Melloi II, there is great interest from many students to join, but the students of the Classroom keep control over the incoming students. There exists a black market for tickets to gain access to the Classroom.[3]
For the El-Melloi Classroom, where New Age Magi come in droves,[5] they are said to be its "star of hope."[6]
As of 2009, there are less than fifteen graduates of El-Melloi II's class. Even counting people who dropped the course and graduated in other Departments, there are still less than fifty. But despite their small numbers, their faction is said to control the Clock Tower's power balance.[7]
Currently there are many houses with their eyes on El-Melloi Classroom students.[8]

Lord El-Melloi II's Case Files[]
The class receives the largest focus in this series, with El-Melloi II, Gray, Svin Glascheit, and Flat Escardos being main characters, and several others such as Caules Forvedge and Yvette L. Lehrman appearing as supporting characters. During the time period of Case Files Svin is the most senior student in the current class, having joined one month before Flat.[10]
Fate/strange Fake[]
Rohngall and his disciple discuss the students of El-Melloi II and how many have reached the Brand and Pride ranks at an unprecedented level.[11]
About thirty of the students of the El-Melloi Classroom travel to Snowfield after the death of Flat Escardos and the emergence of Thia Escardos. It is revealed they are collectively the Masters of Hippolyta, with the exception of Yvette, who was excluded as a liability that would betray them whenever she found it funny and thus was not granted a Command Spell by Verner Caesarmund. While one of the Command Spells is shared among the entire class, Verner independently controls the other two.[7]

Flat Escardos was the very first student created for El-Melloi II, having been created by Ryohgo Narita in 2008. As the first student, he became the standard for every student created after.[12]

Kayneth demonstrated genius level talent during his time as a student. He was the youngest lecturer to grace the podium of the Department of Evocation in its history. His skills were not only in research, but also politics. Due to his great lineage, he had extensive connections. He was expected to form the greatest faction in the Clock Tower.
He did not participate in the Holy Grail War due to necessity or duress, it was merely to add a splash of "martial prowess" to his life's story. That was it. Although he did not severely underestimate the Three Founding Houses, he did boast that Lord El-Melloi could overwhelm them by skills alone.
The reason Kayneth brought many dangerous Mystic Code had nothing to do with research, but for entertainment value. Kayneth had talents not only in Spirit Evocation, but also in many fields of magecraft. He was really a man of many talents like Gennai Hiraga or Cao Cao.
Kayneth even considered the Heroic Spirits ---- Servants, to be part of his stock of Mystic Codes. Because he never acknowledged the humanity of Servants, he did not understand Diarmuid's loyalty even until the very end. As a result, he effectively lost through self-destruction.
However, Diarmuid was not choosey of his Master, he would acknowledge anyone who would accept his loyalty. As a result, he did not understand Kayneth as a person either. If Diarmuid really appreciated Kayneth's talents and experience, then Kayneth would have treated him with a much softer attitude.
To Kayneth, unable to bond with his Servant was the second most unfortunate event at the worst. The most unfortunate event by far was encountering Emiya Kiritsugu. Although as a mage, Kayneth won by an enormous margin, as a killer, he was miles behind Kiritsugu. It was inevitable that Kayneth would lose in a melee such as the Holy Grail War. Because of Kayneth's sudden death, his many valuable research accumulated in the Clock Tower was unorganized and left unattended. Although they were almost lost, the most useless formal student suddenly appeared to save the day. He had an unusual talent of "could not put magecraft to practice, but ingenious in the reinterpretation of theories and classification of systems". This student eventually compiled a tome named "Lord Kayneth's Encyclopedia of Arcane Secrets", which laid the foundation for the flourishing of House El-Melloi and its descendants.
By the way, in the Fourth Holy Grail War, the following strategy would insure the absolute victory of Team Lancer:
- Kayneth must not let his Servant recognize such things as honour on the battle field or knights' pride. He must let Diarmuid realize that the Holy Grail War was merely dirty chores that needed to be done.
- In order to fulfill the previous item, Kayneth must avoid any contact between Diarmuid and Saber with his best effort.
- In combat, Kayneth must prioritize securing an exit. In a battle, missions would be considered accomplished if Diarmuid scored one hit with Gae Buidhe. Repeat this tactic, and exhaust all hostile teams.
- Capitalize on Team Berserker. Team Berserker was a powerful enemy against all other teams, but Lancer had an advantage due to compatibility. It would be optimal to let Berserker destroy the other teams and reach the finale. He could then be defeated at that point.
ケイネス・エルメロイ・アーチボルト【人名】
学生時代から神童と謳われるほどの才能の閃きを見せ、降霊学科では最年少で講師の座に着く。学究の才能ばかりでなく政治的手腕も巧みで、家門の良さ故に有力なコネも大勢。ゆくゆくは時計塔内の最大派閥を形成するものと嘱望されていた。
彼が聖杯戦争に参加する理由には必ずしも切迫したものがあったわはではなく、自らの経歴の中に「武功」として評価される逸話も欲しくなった、という程度のものでしかない。『始まりの御三家』の必死ぶりを侮っていたわはではなかろうが、それを才覚のみて圧倒できてこそのロード・エルメロイ、という自負があったのだろう。
どちらかといえば研究畑の人間だったにもかかわらず、おそろしく剣呑な礼装を準備していたのは、単純に趣味の産物である。彼は降霊術のみなら、ず様々なジャンルの魔術で才能を見せ、その出鱈目な多才ぶりは平賀源内か曹操か、という有様であった。
英霊を使役するサーヴァントという存在すらも、彼にとっては数ある礼装の一つ、程度の認識でしかなかったのだろう。英霊の人格というものを認める気が毛頭なかったが故に、ディルムッドの忠義に打しても最後まで理解を示すことができず、結果として自滅も同然の敗退を遂げる。
とはいえ実のところディルムッドも、マスターとして自分の忠義を受け正めてくれる相手なら誰でも良かった節があり、ケイネスその人の人柄と向き合っての相互埋解を怠っていたのは事実である。もし板にディルムッドが、ケイネスの才能と経歴にメロメロになるほど感服した上で忠誠を誓っていたならば、ケイネスとてもうちょっと柔らかい接し方をしたんじゃなかろうか。
まあ、サーヴァントと信頼関係を築けなかったことは、ケイネスにとって二番目の不運に過ぎず、ブッチギリに一番の不運は、衛宮切嗣と巡り会ってしまったことに尽きる。魔術師としての位階は切嗣よりはるかに勝りながらも、殺人者としては切嗣に及ぶべくもなく、聖杯戦争という殺し合いにおいての敗退は必定であった。ケイネスの突然の死によって、彼が時計塔において積み重ねてきた多くの貴重な研究は未整理のまま放置され、あやうくその成果は散逸してしまうところだったのだが、いちばん無能だった一人の元弟子が、『魔術の実践はからきしなのに、理論の再解釈と系統分類は天才的』という妙な才覚を持ち合わせていたことで、最終的には『ロード・ケイネス秘術大全』という一冊の魔道書として編纂され、すべての秘術はアーチボルト家の管理上へと戻されて、後の家門の繁栄を盤石のものとした。
ちなみに第4次聖杯戦争におけるランサーチームの必勝パターンは……
• サーブァントに戦場の誉れとか騎士の誇りだとかを意識させない。聖杯戦争は汚れ仕事の処理業務だと常に諦観させておく。
• 前述の条件を満たすために、セィバーとの接触は極力避けること。
• 戦闘においては常に退路の碓保を最優先し、ゲイボウを一撃当てたら目的達成とみなし撤退する。これを繰り返し、各敵対チームの消耗を待つ。

Supervised by Lord El-Melloi II, a classroom where Modern Magecraft is taught by three to five professors (fluctuating over time).
For a time the El-Melloi Classroom was the only place teaching Modern Magecraft, so there are some who use the terms interchangeably. Strictly speaking, however, the El-Melloi Classroom is only a single part of the Faculty of Modern Magecraft, a small seminar of about fifteen students. Including auditing students, that number jumps to about fifty. Left alone, there would be a flood of students joining officially, but there may or may not exist a self-governing body of students within the classroom keeping strict control of it. And there may or may not be a black market for tickets to gain entry.
In one memory scene, Waver borrows money from Melvin in order to purchase the classroom. Really what he is purchasing is “the right of have a classroom in the headquarters of the Clock Tower.” A classroom in the Clock Tower is something like a castle, so at the time Waver had to borrow enough money to buy a castle.
Furthermore, during the course of the events of Case Files, the number of teachers and students in the Faculty of Modern Magecraft grew considerably, reaching the numbers they have today.エルメロイ教室【組織/そのほか】
ロード・エルメロイII世を責任者として、総数三人から五人程度の講師（時期によって変動）が教えている現代魔術科の授業単位。
一時期は事実上現代魔術科=エルメロイ教室だったため、現代魔術科全体をそう呼ぶ向きもある。が、厳密に言えば、エルメロイ教室とはその内のごく一部、十五人ほどの少数精鋭ゼミである。ただし聴講生を含めると五十人ほどいる。放っておくと殺到するのだが、このへんは嫌われがちな自治生徒が取り仕切ってるとかいないとか。闇チケットがあるとかないとか。
回想シーンで、ウェイバーがメルヴィンに借金してエルメロイ教室を購入したというのは、こうしたゼミの「時計塔本部における教室の権利」のことである。時計塔における教室とはある種城のようなもので、このときウェイバーは城を買うほどの借金をしたのであった。

The lowest rank is Frame, but to obtain that rank the Clock Tower must recognize you as a "legitimate magus". A self-taught or unassociated magus is not "magus" to the Association, merely an outsider.
For a pleb with about five hundred years behind them doing their very best, Cause rank is the limit.
However, unless they "created some sort of magical foundation and stabilized it" they would not be recognized as having the sufficient ability for this rank.
Those marked as Fes are in a special slot. This rank is awarded as recognition for abilities outside of the normal: a special skill or achievement. For example El-Melloi II. Conversely a comparably high leveled magus can trapped be in Fes rank. Furthermore, although not the target of much gossip, ranks are given to lineages too. Normally a magus' rank and his family rank are in agreement, however in many cases a large gap calls upon tragedy.
Pride families where both the main and branch families do not have suitable successors will adopt and usher in an excellent magus from more common stock. Currently there are many houses with their eyes on El-Melloi classroom students魔術師の階位
最低位は末子だが、これを取得するためにも、時計塔で「正規の魔術師」と認められなくてはならない。在野のはぐれ魔術師や独学の魔術師たちは、魔術協会にとって「魔術師」ですらない余所者である。
おおよそ五百年程度の平民出身では、よほど頑張っても開位が限界。もっとも、これにしたところで「何らかの魔術基盤をつくり、安定させた」という功績がなければ認められない階位なので、十分な実力の持ち主といえよう。
※印がついている祭位は特別枠である。通常の能力とは別に、何らかの特技・功績を認められた場合、この階位をいただく事がある。エルメロイⅡ世がまさにこの例だが、逆により高位に匹敵する魔術師が、祭位にとどめられることもあるという。
また、あまり取りざたされることはないが、こうした階位は家柄の方にもつけられている。たいていの場合、最終的には魔術師の階位と家柄の階位は一致するのだが、大きく開きがある場合悲劇を呼ぶことが多い。

Makoto Sanda: In that aspect, Reines was the most difficult to work with. At the point where she made her appearance in Fate/Apocrypha, it was already decided that Case Files would be a thing. (Yuichiro) Higashide consulted with me, "Is it okay for Reines to be something like this?" So quite a bit of the part at the beginning of the second volume of the original novels where Reines is the narrator had been written out during the initial planning phase. I had wanted to solidify how Reines shapes up as a character to myself.
—The writers all have such solid coordination with one another.
Makoto Sanda: But Caules was more like an afterthought. When Fate/Apocrypha was completed, it was like, "Mr. Sanda, this guy is gonna head off to the El-Melloi Class", where Mr. Higashide naturally shoved him my way. (laughs) As far as the position the character served, that made things interesting, so I went along with it as well. Flat is similar but in contrast to that. Flat originally was a character that was born from an April Fools fanfiction piece by Ryogo Narita in 2008 (Fake/states night). Actually, I was keeping him company as he pulled an all-nighter writing it... That story aside (laughs), in other words Flat is the very first character created as El-Melloi II's student. Which means, he becomes the standard for every other student.
—Indeed.
Makoto Sanda: Of course, it's obvious if you have taken a look at the series, but while Flat eclipses others as a student within the class, I had to make sure that the class environment was such that it's not strange for him to be there. That was when I created Svin. Flat being the only genius wouldn't let him settle down as a character, nor is it really interesting as a group. Therefore, I needed to create a strange character that had just as much talent as Flat. And, since Flat is basically a trickster, I need a character that could stop him. That is why Svin is a character that is basically in charge of the rebuttals, but on occasion will go off the deep end just as much as Flat does.。
