[v] TYPE-MOON Manuscript - Worldbuilding, p.030-032

Worldbuilding
In our latest work TsukiRE, the worldbuilding inherited from the previous version has been updated to be deeper and more modern.
There are a few things that are not going to be revealed yet, but I would like to introduce some things that were part of that update.

Setting
The city goes by the name of Souya.
In the old version, we used a provincial city as the setting, but now it’s been changed to an urban one. A fantastic place, neighboring a gigantic factory about four stations away, reminiscent of the Tokyo-Yokahama Industrial Area.
The protagonist’s highschool lies close to a residential area far from the station, so he does not hang out there on his way home from school. On the ends of this residential district lies a forest that has been there since ancient times, and by this forest’s entrance lies the mansion of the great landowner Tohno family.

Mystic Eyes of Death Perception
The peculiar ability possessed by the protagonist Shiki. Categorized as a psychic ability.
He can see the normally imperceivable ‘lines of death’, something akin to the point of collapse in all things.
These lines of death are like seams, which means all it takes to sever an object is to run a blade through them.
The strength and hardness of the object does not matter. No matter how hard or frail, the feeling is always the same. Perceivable = Cuttable.
In addition, as things dismembered by the lines of death ‘kills’ that specific part, no healing is possible. This is because the severed part has died on the existential level, even if it only looks like it has been cut.

Shiki is a living being and thus able to better understand the death of things that are alive just as he is—this is why he unconsciously perceives the lines of death of the living.
However, Shiki himself can stress his consciousness and overexert his eyeballs to visualize even the ordinarily incomprehensible lines of death on inanimate objects, through which he can perceive even the ‘death of space—death of existence’, as an ultimate locality. (Shiki’s brain is unable to withstand seeing the lines to this level)

In addition to the lines of death, there are the points of death, which stand above the lines.
If the lines of death are blood vessels, the points of death are hearts.
Those that have had their point of death pierced are killed in literally a single strike. Just as in the case with the ‘death of space’, Shiki has to overexert himself, or else he cannot see them.

An important point is that while the lines of death exist in all things, there are differences in how distinct they are.
Putting it simply: the lines of death are lifespan.
He can easily perceive the death of humans who only have the lifespan of about fifty to a hundred years, but it is difficult for him to perceive the death of existences who possess a lifespan in the hundreds or thousands of years.
Meaning, as long as he is trying to perceive the concept of death as a shape, he cannot quite so readily grasp it coming from things that are difficult to kill.
This is the reasoning behind why when Shiki is up against Greater Dead Apostles or Arcueid in the story, he has to push his consciousness to the limit if he wants to perceive their deaths.

(*Greater Dead Apostles are ‘hard to kill’, while Arcueid ‘cannot die’. Shiki’s murder of Arcueid in the beginning of the game made the impossible possible. In the Tsukihime world, things like Arcueid dying or Arcueid being killed were events outside of what was normal.)

Psychic Abilities
Special abilities endowed to the body from birth such as those possessed by Shiki, Kohaku and Hisui are known as psychic abilities.
They are impossible to gain after birth through either training or study.
Through successive inbreeding, it is possible to pass on these psychic abilities to some extent, even if it is not possible to perfectly reproduce the ability possessed by the parent.
Shiki, who comes from a clan known as Nanaya that have passed along a mutant gene, could be seen as an even further mutation.
(*The Nanayas’ special ability is not associated with ‘death’, but rather concerns ‘karma’. The reason this altered into ‘death’ with Shiki is because of his near-death experience)

Mixbloods
Those that have inherited the blood of ancient purebloods, like the Tohno and Saiki.
Pureblooded species are non-humans (oni-kind), or alternatively those that have strayed from being human and turned into onis.
As they have inherited the role of nature’s sense of touch (output devices), they have abilities different from those of psychic ones.
Psychic abilities are ultimately something which the human performs on their own, while the abilities gained through mixed blood is natural interference/natural contact—not something manifested by just one’s own personal abilities (one’s brain).
In addition, psychic abilities (generally) abide by physical laws, while the abilities of mixbloods often do not. Fantastic stories, folklore, tales of old—in order words, unnatural phenomena which cannot occur in reality.
Psychic abilities and mixbloods have a relationship similar to that of magecraft and magic.

Magecraft and Hexcraft
Technology used by Ciel and Roa. Known as magecraft—spatial interference and application methods based on rituals (systems).
Anyone can use it with enough training, but the potency depends on the individual’s own qualities (the number and quality of their Magic Circuits).
In the story of Tsukihime, runes, kabbalah, hexcraft, witchcraft, wonderworking, etc, are all bundled together as magecraft. Xian arts and esoteric buddhism are also included in this, but as they are part of a different faction, they are not brought up in Tsukihime.
It is basically all-purpose, but cannot make the impossible possible.
At the end of the day, magecraft is a technique for abbreviating the processes of methods possible to the individual themselves.
Even if there was magecraft that allowed one to go to the moon, it would still require preparation with costs on par with—or even exceeding—that of actually creating a rocket.
“Sure, it’s amazing being able to shoot fire from one’s hands—but nothing more than just amazing. If all you wanna do is shoot some fire, wouldn’t it be more efficient to just bring a blowtorch?”
This is the simplest explanation you can give regarding magecraft in TYPE-MOON lore.
You could say that magecraft is something which modern science can substitute for.
But you could also say that magecraft can substitute for science.
Seperate from this, that which can perform things impossible to realize through modern human technology is what is called Magic.
By the time of Tsukihime’s story, that which can be called Magic have decreased to five.

True Ancestors
Those treated as the ‘original bloodsuckers’ in the Tsukihime world.
They are the cause of the vampires who run rampant among the public, even if the True Ancestors themselves are a far cry from the common perception people have surrounding vampires.
They are few in number and exceedingly close to immortal.
Even if they are exposed to sunlight, it would only ever give them slight anemia, and they are not affected by the cleansing rites employed by any religions either.
True Ancestors are not individuals independent of the natural world like humans, but an older species still at one with nature.
That they’re often misunderstood as undying and eternally youthful is because they are the planet’s sense of touch. In the first place their time-scale is different from that of humans.
Their lifespan is naturally immense; its limits, so to speak, are only those of nature itself. True Ancestors and fairies are something akin to the planet’s white blood cells. So they possess abilities sufficient to exterminate any of the various factors which would do harm to the planet.
However, at the time of their birth, a singular error occurred within them.
Probably due to the influence of that after which they were modeled.
They turned out to possess the desire—the primordial, survival-oriented desire—to ingest the blood of intelligent lifeforms.
Moreover, because they were incarnated as protectors, their objectivity was diluted. They gained autonomy, as one of the many species living on the planet. Basically, they came in possession of a sense of values closer to that of a human’s.

As they have ceased to be free of self-interest—such as noncorporeal elementals ought to be—they have lost sight of their role as protectors, to the point that among them some have even become like humans, and gained independence from the natural world.
Those known as the True Ancestors have no limits.
As a result of being provided back-up from the planet, if the need should arise, they can strengthen their abilities until that need is met. (However, the amount and speed that each True Ancestor can increase it by differs per individual)
In addition, the power of their will is enough to take actual form, meaning that the thoughts of the True Ancestor becomes a weapon on its own, influencing even the world.
Fantasy Materialization—also known as Marble Phantasm—the reformulation of the world through probabilistic fluctuations.
However, they cannot directly interfere with individuals that have become independent from the world like humans or animals. Humans have weakened by distancing themselves from nature, but at same time, will not perish even if nature itself does—obtaining absolute freedom. At the of the day, Marble Phantasm can only freely exert change unto the environment and the situation.
As a slight digression, if the ridiculous situation of a castle appearing in the middle of a city at night was to occur, this is thought to be because the vampire (True Ancestor) suzerain of it willed it into creation.

The True Ancestors are a species which are practically gods, but they do have a flaw.
Though True Ancestors, they are still bloodsuckers. It is the very act of sucking blood itself which serves as their silver stake to the heart.
Though they are the cause that created the vampires (Dead Apostle) on Earth, they themselves have absolutely no need for drinking blood to continue living. The energy they need for that they can get through the ingestion of calories.
That said, they cannot go against their instinct as a species (to ingest and partake in the information of intelligent life = bloodsucking), which results in them sucking the blood of humans.
They execute humans in order to bring harmony to nature—though in actuality, they need them more than anything else in order to fulfill their own desires.
This contradiction causes the minds of these proud beings to collapse in on themselves. The more blood these proud elementals suck, the more they degenerate into beasts, craving pleasure the same as any human would.

This degeneration is rightly called ‘falling to evil’.
True Ancestors which have this happen to them forget the consciousness they have birthed for themselves and become a powerful vampire who begins corrupting the world.
As they do not have lifespans, ‘to lose sight of their values’ is the same as their ‘death of self’.
In order to prevent this death of consciousness, True Ancestors use a large part of their abilities to inhibit their vampiric urges.
The longer they withstand their desire to suck blood, the more it grows, yet they keep suppressing it—an unending battle of perseverance. By slamming the tremendous power of their will up against their own mind, they can control their desire to drink human blood.
Invariably, as they hold back on sucking blood more and more, the time eventually comes when they realize that they cannot suppress their vampiric urges any longer and so they enter into an eternal sleep by their own will. This is the activity threshold for those with an endless lifespan—one could perhaps say it is what humans would actually call their lifespan.

Dead Apostles
Something much like what the public at large imagines of a vampire.
Weak to sunlight, sucks human blood, transforms into beasts or mist and is immortal.
Called vampires in the game out of a consideration to make things easier to understand.
*However, the creature known as the vampire started being talked about in the 1900s. In real folklore, they are actually the monster with the least pedigree. In contrast, werewolves, who are often seen as their henchmen, are a monster passed down from days of old—in fact, parts of what the vampire was modeled after was taken from the characteristics of werewolves.
That’s why in the world of Tsukihime, they are more properly treated as bloodsuckers—the general term for things that suck blood from their own kind.

Dead Apostles are—just as one would imagine from their name—dead. They are divided into those that have been transformed into one by some kind of magecraft, and those that have had their blood sucked by a True Ancestor, and become its puppet.
Unlike True Ancestors, both of these kinds have to suck human blood in order to survive. Blood is considered a necessity for their vital activities.
They are also weak to sunlight, and as they are unable to completely rid themselves of the shared awareness of being human, they are defeated when faced with religious cleansing rites.

[v] TYPE-MOON Manuscript - Zelretch Kishur Schweinorg, p.033-035

Zelretch Kishur Schweinorg

Overview
The Wizard Marshall. One of the oldest mages, having been active since before the common era.
When the war between Crimson Moon and the Mages Association broke out around 300 AD, the mages were too preoccupied with their own single-player antics to be able to function as an army, so Zelretch took them by the neck and unified them, becoming feared as the Wizard Marshall in the process.
He repelled Crimson Moon, but in the process the #3 of the 27 Dead Apostle Ancestors charged him and sucked his blood, and though he defeated this one too, he was ultimately turned into a Dead Apostle.
Afterward, he was to become mankind’s enemy, unable to oppose Crimson Moon… but he just thought ‘I wasn’t mankind’s ally to begin with—kinda just wanna go retire’, taking the opportunity to disappear from the center stage of magecraft.

After becoming one of the 27 Ancestors, he came to understand Crimson Moon’s views, and began hating him even further.
On the other hand, after comprehending the system behind the 27 Ancestors, he became aware of the other Ancestors’ way of being, and so stopped hating vampires themselves. After all, some of the Ancestors were far more pure in their scholarship compared to the Mages Association’s advocates of pre-established privileges.

Appearance
From his outward appearance he looks like to be in his 60s. His facial features are Germanic.
He is a stern-looking elder, his gray (originally blond) hair in a dishevelled back sweep, though on account of his youthful expressions, he can also look to be in his fifties.
190 cm tall, well-built, with excellent posture—the very stereotype of an esteemed military-man.
Consult the picture book that came with the Tsukihime anime as a bonus prologue for how his clothes look.

Personality
Lawful Good.
Extroverted, self-assured, proactive.
A thoughtful sage—one who assesses the whole and imagines a bright future. Though he has a scary look that makes others distance themselves from him, he is a man of social justice and has good and honest morals.
However, though he has them, that doesn’t mean he applies them to himself, and is rather a man of freedom who does whatever he likes.
“I’ll force rules upon the Mages Association for the sake of a brighter future, but I never said I’d follow those rules myself” is something he actually follows through with.
He has the same attitude as a grandpa who often laughs as he watches over the life of his mischievous grandchild.
Though he is an observer, he will still butt into arguments (in fact, if someone is about to make a blunder, he will warn them, a smile on his face), and if he realizes things are about to spill over onto him, he will childishly hinder it with full force. That’s the kind of adult he is.
Zelretch generally sees himself as an alumnus who has already graduated from ‘Earth Academy’. Meaning, as long as the academy itself doesn’t go under, he will just warmly watch on from afar at the various problems afflicting it—broad-mindedly thinking something like “I did about the same when I was young”
The highlight of Zelretch’s life was his showdown with Crimson Moon, so everything beyond that he sees as nothing more than ‘the rest of his days’.
Although, that is precisely why he’s very proactive when it comes to assessing the situation surrounding Crimson Moon. One could see it as taking care of the aftermath of his adolescent period. The reason Zelretch headed for the castle of the True Ancestors and blessed the birth of Arcueid was because she was the factor who would take his place in bringing an end to the Crimson Moon problem.

Manner of Talking
His first-person pronoun is ‘washi’.
He calls people by their personal name. If he has respect for someone of a more noble personage, he will use their appropriate title of honor—‘princess’, ‘king’ and so forth.
If who he’s talking to is someone he personally likes, he may go as far inadvertently calling them “omae-san”.
He does not use ‘~ja’ or ‘‘~jawai’ or such, at the end of his sentences.
He speaks like a dignified elder, but try to keep in mind that his sentences are a bit youthful here and there.
“I intended to remain youthful forever, but it didn’t quite go as I wanted”
The ideal is to avoid long sentences—make him come through with each individual word.

Abilities
The father of jewel magecraft—to store magical energy in minerals, stabilize them and use it for various applications in life and for supporting civilization.
Even if we assume that the Earth did not fall into the hands of humanity—remaining in the Age of Gods—he might have still piloted rockets using just his jewels.

The Second Magic concerns the attestation and application of parallel worlds.
By making it possible to travel to parallel worlds, he proved that there is still room for the world to develop in different ways.
Thanks to this, the world’s lifespan has been extended. Even if our history fails, and we destroy ourselves, there might still be others of us out there—this concept granted hope to the planet, which had been in the process of losing its dreams.
Zelretch’s method for travelling through parallel words is a simple one—he transfers himself to a jewel in a different temporal axis.
For example: if he wants to transfer from World A to World B, he will gather jewels in World B until they gather up enough to take Zelretch’s shape, and then Zelretch’s soul will transfer over. In an instant, the jewel golem transforms into Zelretch. At that point, the Zelretch in World A will turn back into its original form as a pile of jewels.
As long as minerals and jewels exist there, he can travel into any world he wishes, but as he only has a single soul, he cannot be active in all of them at once.
He originally travelled with just his physical body, but because of various circumstances he eventually settled for this method as it was the easiest.
In addition, as a small amount of time lag occurs when he travels, he is also capable of a tiny bit of time travel as well.
To answer the question of ‘if he doesn’t travel with his physical body, how could he be a Dead Apostle?’—as someone who has inherited the Hemonomic Principle of one of the 27 Ancestors, he has been corrupted on the soul-level, so it's impossible for him not to be.
Vampirification is not the transformation of the body, but of existence. It’s like if the entry in the Akashic Records that read ‘human’ changed class to ‘Dead Apostle’—to become a vampire in one’s very being.

Career
One of the oldest mages, having been active since B.C. Also one of King Solomon’s pupils.
After Solomon's death, Zelretch witnessed the end of the Age of Gods with his own eyes, and then disappeared from the center stage.
Afterward, when one of his fellow students (Brissan) was starting up the Mages Association, he helped out in laying its foundations.
As a result, the mages who had not perished became involved in the war against Crimson Moon 200 years later. In this battle, Zelretch transformed from human to Dead Apostle.
He has been observing many different parallel words ever since, detachedly spectating the course of their events.

Standing

Attitude toward the Mages Association
Due to his promise with Yumina, and the fact that he is old acquaintances with the headmaster, he shows up now and then to act as an advisor for them. He has accepted the weakening of mage ideals as something that happens. However, if some weakling comes before him and starts going off about their own theories he will beat them and their weak character into shape.
When there are issues concerning Magic, he appears before the Association and delivers fair and just judgment.

Attitude toward the Holy Church
He does not concern himself with them in the slightest.

Attitude toward the Dead Apostles
He does not interfere with them as long as they do not cause some particularly large-scale mischief.
He has seen through the mechanisms behind the 27 Ancestors, but has deliberately chosen to quietly observe them. He is tea-drinking companions with the three idiots of Agape, Lovematroos and Caubac. Rumors have it that he becomes like a simple grandpa doting on his grandchild when dealing with Agape.

Attitude toward the True Ancestors
Zelretch is highly regarded among the True Ancestors as he is one of the most prominent mages in the human world.
Zelretch, on account of having been alive since before the common era, is friendly with the elementals known as the True Ancestors, and often provides them with counsel:
“Kishua, hey, listen. You know that ‘Christianity’ thing humans are doing among each other? What’s that? A new type of magecraft system?
“That’s a detailed Manual to Mankind’s Prosperity. It will one day even turn out to be a best-seller. Well, it’s for the best if you don’t know much about it. You’d probably lose your minds.
“I see, if you say so, then it’s probably true. By the way, I’d like to try a bit of that wine they make in Bourgogne. Could you get some?
Stuff like this.

Attitude toward Rin
‘Tohsaka’s descendants sure did well! Alright, there aren’t any Magician seats left, but I will hammer some unreasonably difficult magecraft into you! They’re things I’ve worked out but unfortunately never taught anyone!’ So he goes, a bit happily.
Anyone who is a Magician’s pupil is first started off with a living hell where they might accidentally destroy the universe—like with Aoko from Mahoyo. Although Rin never minded it that much, instead simply tilting her head, wondering if maybe she had just had some kind of tremendously hellish thing shown to her, after which she kept puking for a whole month.

Archetype:Earth[]

[v] TYPE-MOON Manuscript - Archetype:Earth, p.042-047

Archetype:Earth

Class: Berserker
True Name: Archetype:Earth
Gender: Female Body
Alignment: Lawful Chaotic
Origin: Tsukihime
Region: Earth
Height/Weight: About 200 meters when emerging (depending on the CG)
About 100 meters when stabilized (as big or bigger than the tallest building in the city. Adapts to the level of nearby civilization)
※Its weight stays the same no matter the state—being the same as the normal Arcueid. Given that it’s just the lifeforce spilling out from Earth given shape, if pressed to give an answer, I’d say its weight would be the mass of Earth, or something. So, no matter the action it takes, as long as it’s on the surface of Earth, it’s not heavy, and so its weight doesn’t cause any damage to the terrain—meaning, when the Luminary walks, it doesn’t cause the ground to sink in or anything like that. However, this does not apply to man-made objects.

If normal Arcueid is:
Strength: B Endurance: B Agility: B Magic: A Luck: B Noble Phantasm: EX

Then Luminary Arcueid is:
Strength: E Endurance: EX Agility: B Magic: A++ Luck: EX Noble Phantasm: D

Personal Skills
Marble Phantasm: D
Though Arcueid normally has this at A, here it has been ranked down to D.
True Ancestors in a Luminary state can only use Marble Phantasm in an approximate manner.
Due to having turned into a Luminary, she cannot construct any detailed fantasies.

Event Storage: EX
The ability to conceptually and physically store things that have been cultivated on the surface of Earth.
The confiscation of all creations birthed on the surface of the planet—its Textures.
An ability on par with the Divine Spirits’ so-called ‘Authorities’, though given that it’s a function possessed by the planet, it is less of a skill, and more of a system.
The gravitational field that appears under Arcueid’s feet when she has turned into a Luminary has enough of a reach to store all Textures on Earth.

Mana Discharge (Planetary): A
The super version of Mana Discharge—the Breath of the Planet.
What animals know as ‘breathing’. She inhales magical energy (mana) from the atmosphere and then exhales it into the outer world as new magical energy after circulating it through her body—a Mana Cleaner.
This is the reason why the Earth gets filled with high-density mana when the Luminary appears, causing humans to die.
The gravitational field that appears under Arc’s feet when she’s turned into a Luminary has enough of a reach to store all Textures on Earth.

Class Skills (Passives)
Luminary: A
Rapid expansion (Inflation) of the Spiritron Core.
A phenomenon more simply called a ‘Luminary’.
(‘Inflation’ is originally terminology from astronomy—it’s what the exponential expansion of the universe that occured after the Big Bang is called) A state of excitation possessed by True Ancestors of the highest grade—their royalty. It’s said to occur as a side-effect when the True Ancestor has by some means had its body completely destroyed.
When Arcueid—a small yet heavy being—loses the body which forms her frame(box), the compressed magical energy within is released, and the result is that her Lifescale expands (though this is actually a false impression).
Though Arcueid’s consciousness is in the center of this light, as she no longer possesses a body to serve as a wall, she takes a state where her surplus magical energy levels remain, while the sort of self-image she imagines for herself is projected and dispersed. The Association calls this a Spiritron Frame (Lightframe). In other words, this is a natural phenomenon created out of nothing but mental power.
If one carelessly destroys a True Ancestor who still has magical energy in surplus, the energy stored within their body manifests—a retribution mechanism—to become a calamity that destroys human cities.

Arcueid does not cause Inflation when Roa still has part of her power and she’s about to die from maceration, but with her having killed Roa in Ciel Route, her love toward Shiki causes her to bug out—unable to keep suppressing her vampiric urges, she brings about this phenomenon. Correction: she unintentionally brings about this phenomenon.
Luminary Arcueid is about 200 meters when she’s emerging, and about 100 when she’s stabilized her dispersed consciousness and is in her normal state.

— Mystic Eyes (Hyper Wide-Range)
All intelligent beings who Luminary Arc looks at will have their minds paralyzed, either out of fear, or out of worship.
Unless those seen by Luminary Arc have unusually powerful mental strength, both escaping and fighting is infeasible.

— Fantasy Dequantification (Nullification of Normal Attacks)
Because of being in a mental form, only attacks which Arcueid recognizes as ‘oh, this one will suck’ are capable of wounding her.
In addition, being in an energy form means all injuries she receives are instantly restored to normal.

— Geothermal Manipulation & Atmospheric Manipulation
To change the surrounding environment into a harsh one.
The ground going into high-temperatures alone is enough to impede the activity of life, with all that approaches at the mercy of the atmospheric turbulence, as though a leaf in the wind—in short, she’s a personification of natural disasters.
An existence which is earthquakes, typhoons, tsunamis, and the likes, all put together.
Princess Arc from Melty used all these consciously and intentionally, while Luminary Arc can only ever use them unconsciously and reactionarily.
They are only activating automatically as biological functions, and cannot be controlled.
Princess Arc is actually the one who is the superior of the two, given that she can properly use these disasters as weapons, and is able to keep damages to a minimum.
The Luminary is not a form meant for attacking, but for regeneration.
It is nothing more than a necessary procedure for recreating the body of the True Ancestor so they will once again be able to act out their role as one. Therefore, it’s unable to move from the spot where it manifested, no matter what (as there is no need to).
It’s sort of like the cores and surface-level synchrotron radiation quantity of stars.
The convergence of hydrogen and helium through strong gravity leads to planets being pressed together into masses of resources, eventually forming a benign crust after they cool down, while a Luminary is meant to turn into a body after its convergence.
The benefit to having a body goes without saying: the establishment of an ego—a self. Remaining a Luminary means that eventually the consciousness would eventually merge with the Earth itself and then disperse as mere energy.
→ However, in Ciel Route, as Arc couldn’t control her reason/emotions, she also couldn’t cancel her Luminary. The only thing awaiting her at the end of that would be to perish from dispersal.
→ In addition, once she started walking out of jealousy, she gave up on being a chrysalis. Though the Luminary is ultimately a system meant for returning her to normal, once it is employed as an individual lifeform, even Arcueid will start falling apart at the seams, and eventually completely perish.
→ On the other hand… if one was to use the Luminary as a means of birthing a new, stronger individual instead of as a means of returning it to normal, then this would not apply. It would be able to act as a new True Ancestor, while the Arcueid of before would then quite literally disappear.

Lore
— Concerning the suppression of Arcueid's power.
The True Ancestors are the Touch of Earth—something like its immune system.
True Ancestors of the highest grade like Arcueid are one step above that of an immune system—something which would no doubt be appropriate to label as the Alter-Ego of Earth.
(In fact, the True Ancestors were only ever birthed to create a frame on the level of an Alter-Ego of Earth. All True Ancestors outside of Arc were failures. Yet in the True Ancestors’ last days, they succeeded in creating the Brain of the Planet that had been desired in the first place).
However, that such a lifeform would conduct itself in a human body could in itself actually be said to be something abnormal.
If you pack the energy of a celestial object into a tiny human body, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that it would suddenly go out of control.
As long as Arcueid remains active, her output is limited to always be one step above her opponent, but this is not a representation of her sheer power.
This is to protect the body in its function as an output device, and to prevent wasting energy (for the earth).
However, in the case that the limiter of the body is taken away from her, and Arcueid’s mental activity is unabated, the suppression of her power is undone.
The magical energy hidden within her body disperses almost in an explosion, and the limit on her ability to draw energy from the Earth is removed.
This is Inflation—the Inflationary Luminary Phenomenon.
Though normally bound to the planet's interior, being a ‘soul’ (the chances of a celestial object being born in space is practically none. Force of Fate and Spacetime Causality which lets this be established is defined as a soul) meant for prolonged utilization (administration) of its celestial object, once it leaks onto the surface, it causes a system critical error.

That said, True Ancestors almost never enter this state.
The usual True Ancestor’s mind is worn down by having to suppress themselves, so when their body is destroyed, they do not have the mental strength (as it is abated) to recover
Luminaries have manifested in battles with ‘fallen True Ancestors’—those who have succumbed to their own vampiric urges—but in those cases the Luminaries did not emerge on as large a scale as Arcueid did.
“If thou wisheth to exterminate a True Ancestor, thou shalt first wear down its mind”
This is a teaching passed down among the Church. Just as this precept suggests, Executors do not assassinate True Ancestors from the shadows, but instead defeat them in prolonged all-out wars from head-on—or alternatively—push them into self-termination from a lack of magical energy (because if you kill them via a sneak attack, there’s a high chance they’ll turn into a Luminary).

— Concerning the actions of Luminary Arc
Her gigantic size alone makes her powerful, but her actions are not all that showy.
The same goes for when she caught Ciel:

  1. She slowly reaches out for the astonished Ciel. Ciel, feeling she is in a pinch, tries to move back, but her body is heavy.
  2. Though Ciel would normally be capable of easily dodging Arc’s hand, she only barely manages. She pushes her body to try to keep going and create some distance, but it doesn’t obey.
  3. Ciel then notices that just being inside of Arc’s zone of influence causes a litany of debuffs such as… The thinning of the air, the heating of the ground, and what’s more, gravity being kind of weird.
  4. However, even having noticed this, it’s far too late. Arc enjoys watching Ciel pathetically squirm as she tries to escape. At this point, Ciel is practically done for—sewn into space from being looked at by Arc.
  5. Ciel can do nothing but watch with despair on her face as Arcueid slowly lowers her hand onto her. Once caught, the spectacle of her dismemberment inside of Arc’s hand begins.

— The dangers brought on by the three zones of influence
Arc has three layers of consciousness in her Luminary model.

3: AMAZING—Extended Consciousness that goes beyond the Surface Consciousness into the outer world.
(AMAZING—with the meaning of ‘awe’—the fascination of the unknown born from amazement and wonder)
It starts from 300 meters outside the Luminary and extends for several kilometers.
Air turbulence originating from the inside of the Surface Consciousness (2) is let loose (spills out) onto the Extended Consciousness, almost like sharp blades.
The turmoil of the harsh winds, magnetic fields and more, mean that the closer one gets to Arcueid, the more dangerous it becomes. It is impossible for a human to enter the zone of influence of her Surface Consciousness (2) unless they’re in a tank.
Though this is already a dangerous state, physically speaking, the more one distances oneself from the Luminary, the less the danger becomes.
Luminary Arc is completely unaware of the lifeforms inside this Extended Consciousness.
Humans who challenge it are like Don Quixote, voluntarily challenging a dragon—voluntarily going off to die.
Here, the Luminary can be seen as a dome of light—or alternatively, as some kind of symbol.

2: AUDIENCE—Surface Consciousness that extends radially for 300 meters diagonally with the Luminary at its center.
(AUDIENCE—not with the meaning of ‘spectators’ or ‘onlookers’, but that of ‘being granted audience’)
Within the 300 meters of the Surface Consciousness, afforestation proceeds far more dramatically.
The Luminary goes from looking like ‘some light thing’ to a human-shaped titan.
The vegetation that covers the ground’s surface are the same primordial plants as known to mankind, but their size and resilience make them almost completely different—basically, they’re huge, almost 10 to 20 times larger than usual.
These clearly display just how tough the vegetation of the Earth was in the past.
No matter how weak and adapted to the current environment of life that nature of modernity may be, it doesn’t change how frightening this primeval (paleozoic) vegetation once was (before the Mesozoic and the Jurassic periods when the dinosaurs lived, there weren’t any plants that could bear flowers, so be careful to not add that).
It gives off the intimidating impression that primeval nature was far more powerful than human civilization is.
Within this zone of influence, the ground is covered in primeval vegetation, making travel by foot almost entirely impossible (though this does not apply to people who are superhuman).
The difference in atmospheric pressure between the ground and the sky (temperature gradients caused by the oxygen consumption of the gigantic vegetation) perturbs the airflow, creating a corridor of harsh wind from the intersection of up- and downdrafts.
Obstructed by the plants, it becomes impossible to move on land, while the air turbulence in the sky makes it impossible to fly particularly well.
And yet, under these kinds of conditions, the automatic counter-attacks performed by the standard rampaging Arc are carried out as well.
This is because once an enemy has entered the Surface Consciousness, they are obviously recognized as such—as an enemy.
If they then by some stroke of bad luck enter Arc’s view, they will be restrained by her Mystic Eyes, at which point they’re doomed.
The automatic counter-attacks become like invisible claws, either cutting the enemy into pieces, or blowing them up into the air like a leaf, toying with them until they die.
Thinking that it's impossible to survive in the sky, one stops on the ground, only to find there is no oxygen left (the gigantic vegetation is sucking all of it up).
As should be evident from all this, the Surface Consciousness is not an environment in which the current mankind could exist.
Luminary Arc takes not a single action, settling the matter simply by recognizing those who enter as her enemy—almost as if they were fruit flies, flying toward their own death.

1: SKINRAIL—Deep Unconsciousness that exists close (within 30 meters) to herself
(SKIN—with the meaning of the skin also being a railing, even if it’s close enough of a distance to touch with others)
In this zone of influence, the visual impairments coming from the turbulent airflow, the distortions of the Luminary’s energy, and so on, disappear, and the Luminary can be seen for real.
Unlike the revolving airflow hell that was the Surface Consciousness, here the atmosphere is stable, with the environment suited for life.
Once something enters this zone of influence, Luminary Arc will—though hesitantly—counter-attack.
Just by pointing her gaze towards them, she can invoke heat waves and gales that blow them away with an impact that’s almost like a hammer.
Luminary Arc herself almost never does things like punch or stomp though.
If they then stop moving after running out of energy, she’ll probably leave them be…
But if they happen to be an enemy she has an interest in, she’ll probably use her Atmospheric Manipulation to bring them up (into the air) before her eyes.
She went to the effort of stretching out her arms so ostentatiously in trying to terrify Ciel because—yes—Ciel was special.
As for Shiki, she stubbornly refused to ever touch him on her own, due to him having touched her—this pretend indifference is thought to have been a snide way for her to get back at him.

And now for some FAQs about the Luminary.
— Can you touch it?
Once it enters a stable state, the Luminary materializes—so yes, it has hit detection.
It feels both like hard stone and flowing water to the touch.
Also, Arc can will parts of it to rarefy, and when she does that, she can pass those through buildings and what-not.

— Since it's light, does that mean it’s hot?
It’s a bit hot, but not enough to get burned.

— How much reason is left in Luminary Arc?
Enough. She doesn’t feel like saying very much, but that doesn’t mean her reason is lost. It’s more that her True Ancestor supernaturality has gotten stronger.
She does talk, but not with her voice, instead sending orders directly to the other party’s brain (telepathy), meaning that her lips don’t move when she speaks.

— What does she look like to humans?
Depends on the situation and how far away they are.
First, when she’s emerging: it’s totally fine if she’s super scary here. I think something to the effect of the demonic terror found in the storyboard is fine.
Then, when she’s stabilized—around the time when she’s caught Ciel and is playing around with her:
When someone is distantly removed from the Luminary—300 meters or more outside her zone of influence—she only looks like light, while if they’re within the 300 meters of her zone of influence, she has a human shape. I think it'd be fine if one could see that there are eye-shaped holes (kind of like cavities) where her mouth, eyes, etc, are supposed to be.
When even closer to the Luminary—30 meters within Arc’s zone of influence—then the light being emitted looks more subdued, with her eyes and mouth (lips) shining with the brilliance of life. In fact, make her look even more beautiful than normal Arcueid.
This is like a perception manipulation effect that the Luminary has against intelligent beings.
Those who look on from afar will get the impression of something terrifyingly unknowable.
While those who have arrived close will get the impression of something beautifully unknowable.
Those who are far away are enemies who are to be killed without being shown the truth.
While those who are close by are allies who are to be given a glimpse of the truth—a truly spiritually divine (religiously speaking) mechanism.

Caubac Alcatraz[]

[v] TYPE-MOON Manuscript - Caubac Alcatraz, p.040-041

Caubac Alcatraz

Overview
Ranked 27 among the 27 Dead Apostle Ancestors.
His Idea Blood is a "failed product" or perhaps simply "unneeded".
A vampire who was a believer to the church before turning Dead Apostle.
The Crimson Moon made him lose heart shortly before the transition to AD, but the Crimson Moon also saw potential in him and gave him his pure blood, turning him into an Ancestor.
Since then, he has been holed up in an underground cavern lamenting his vampiric transformation, since he was too ashamed to go see his pious companions, not to mention they would kill him on the spot if they saw what he turned into.
Later a lot happened, leading him to build the great labyrinth of Alcatraz.

Somewhen around the year 1000AD, he completed the Triten scripture.
No one saw him ever since.
The Holy Church and the vampire society believe that he built his castle to protect his written truth, the Triten scripture, and when he got that done, a random dimensional distortion turned the castle into some amazing labyrinth not even he can escape.

He turned himself into an inorganic object out of hatred for his body's need to suck blood to extend his life.
He takes the appearance of an ordinary padlock.

In Mahou Tsukai no Hako, it was established that Hibiki is an artificial lifeform (the Triten) who turned human and got lost among the people there.

« Our world was created by the Lord, and its surface is covered in His love. The way humans go hog wild over food and whatnot is also because of Lord's love. The Lord's love is like, super immeasurable to human beings. »

Under the thoughts quoted above, he comprehended the Lord's love and wrote it down. That's what the Triten scripture is.

The punchline here is there on proofread, he realized that he made a model of the universe.
He obviously wasn't trying to create a model of the universe, but that was the final result of what he tried to make.
By reaching the conclusion that the universe is direct proof of the Lord's love, Caubac established he was right and built his labyrinth in order to hide his super ultra awesome treasure literally anyone would desire.
By the way, the labyrinth was made using the same techniques used to make Triten. For that reason, it's constantly expanding at the same speed that the universe expands. Super inescapable.

Now, the following section is about progress caused by the events of Mahou Tsukai no Hako:
Caubac had complete faith in Triten, but he took his eyes away for one moment and Triten disappeared from its storage and went to be human in some Japanese café.
Triten was supposed to be his proof, Triten = the Lord's love, and yet the result of its evolution was a human being!
No true Catholics would see God inside themselves.
Caubac shat himself from shock when he learned about Hibiki.
"In my attempts to prove God is real, I proved that He isn't."

※Addendum:
The following thoughts are the reasons why he considers Triten a mistake:
- We must not see God in ourselves.
- We must not pray for our own benefit. (Prayers are for the Lord's benefit. It's wrong to pray out of desire for salvation. You pray only for the Lord. Caubac's mindset is the same as Caren's.)
- The Lord's love is absolute and must never be questioned. Therefore we must not wish for the Lord to exist in any form different from the forms described in the scriptures.
God's Love = the world.
The fact that we're alive is a manifestation of His love and no matter how much suffering there is in the world, it's all part of grand system of God's deeds (love).

The world is a product of the Lord's thoughts.
Upon closer inspection of the components of the human being (body, mind, and soul), Caubac had the idea that he could prove the Lord's love by replicating all these components in text form.
He then started building his model from all possible accounts, probed into His whole Creation, gave it shape, and ended up with a model of the universe. (He didn't notice it was a model of the universe until it was complete)
And the fact that this universe was functional (even if there was no life in it) was all he needed to go ultra-convinced on his assumption that the Lord's love was real and that it approved his project.
Caubac built his labyrinth to protect this treasure. (Not because he was afraid of it being misused, simply because he was afraid of it being stolen from him)
He believed Triten was the only thing he needed in the whole wide world.
To be fair, that practically completed his purpose as a Dead Apostle as well, leaving him in a complete NEET state. He was right about Triten being the only thing he ever needed.
But imagine the panic when he found out Triten was operating as a human being.
It's the level of shock you get when your computer gets infected by a virus from a porn site.
He made a perfect image of God, and then it turned human.
Would that mean God is human?
That God is made from humans?
God eventually becomes human?
None of these options were possible. There is no God in humans.
But Triten became human.
The conclusion here is that human beings were all there was to the universe.
= God doesn't exist.

After approaching this line of argument, Caubac practically stopped thinking.
His strong will and proneness to delusion kept him on his feet, although in an unmoving state.

« One more time. I need to see Triten one more time. I could have just made a mistake somewhere along the way. Or maybe Triten really is... No, forget that thought. »

And so he started looking for Hibiki. That's the whole backstory for Mahou Tsukai no Hako.

※Completing his "Or maybe Triten really is..." sentence:

« Triten was a model for the universe with no life in it. (The word "life" here refers specifically to intelligent lifeforms capable of self-evolution.)
But in the process of its expansion, the universe birthed lifeforms.
That is God's true deed.
If Triten, an in-depth inspection of the Lord's love, birthed a human being, that's evidence pointing to the thought that the world is made from the Lord's love.
I knew I was right!
But... the problem is that by creating Triten, I kinda violated the creed that we mustn't create God. Actually, if a human can create God, then...  »

He got lost in this labyrinth of thought.
All that said, even if Hibiki is indeed Triten (God), Caubac would deny the notion on the logic that "God is an omnipresent essence, not something with a physical presence".

« God's love exists.
But it can't take a human form.
It can't take a form humans can comprehend.
He can't be alive. »

Above is an example of cool speech he would to reject Hibiki's nature or pretend he never saw it.
...This is the story of how he ruined his own beliefs and came out of his 2000-year-long battle in total denial, but even after all this, he still prioritized the ideal form of God's love over his own happiness and salvation.

[v] TYPE-MOON Manuscript - Lord El-Melloi II, p.036-039

Lord El-Melloi II

Overview
A magus working at the Clock Tower, the headquarters of the Mage’s Association.
One of the twelve Lords that rule and manage the Clock Tower, and the current head of the El-Melloi family. His skill in magecraft is mediocre, but his talent for teaching is recognized by everyone. Apparently.
His real name is Waver Velvet. Before being adopted into the El-Melloi family, he was no more than the eldest son of a fledgling magus. However, the Fourth Holy Grail War drastically changed his life, and before he realized it, he was suffering under the weight of the El-Melloi family’s mantle.

Appearance
British, male, in his thirties.
Though he possesses well-chiseled features, his constant expression of displeasure means he is rarely considered to be handsome.
185cm tall, 72kg. Black eyes and hair.
He wears his long hair straight, but it is kept quite well, so it is not too stifling or unkempt. He regularly smokes cigars, but only as a way of calming himself, with no interest in their flavor.

Personality
Lawful Neutral.
Extroverted, confident, proactive.
Has a wicked tongue, and hates people in general… or so he appears. In truth, just and upright.
Always speaks with a kind of disdainful condescension, but that doesn’t come from looking down on his interlocutors. Rather, it stems from a self-deprecating feeling of “compared to that, what am I even doing? I look like an idiot. I’m the biggest fool here!” Intelligent, possessing good judgment, and more than anything else having lost all sense of vanity, he is able to accurately accept himself as he is. As a result,

“Really, I wanted to complete it myself. But I knew it was impossible for me. The moment I realized that, I noticed that everyone around me was brimming with potential, but wasn’t making use of it. Is there any more infuriating way of life? It takes everything I have to protect what little pride I have left, so why do I have to worry so much about how those idiots live?!”

He often curses others in that fashion, but he also says things like, “I can’t bear to watch such a disgraceful waste. You, come over here!” as he regularly looks out for others.
Though he appears cynical and pessimistic, that is only because of how keenly aware he is of his own limits. At his heart, he believes in helping the weak and disciplining the strong. He does not like getting involved in affairs that appear irritating to deal with, but those same affairs tend to capture his attention and prevent him from focusing on other matters, so he often cooperates to resolve such situations, cursing the whole time. While his experiences have taught him to act courageously, he is still rather cowardly. That is the source of his predilection with making sure his preparations are perfect before making a move.

Manner of Talking
He uses the personal pronoun “watashi.”
For people he is meeting for the first time, or is not especially familiar with, he refers to them by “Last Name”-san or “Name”-kun. He drops the honorific when speaking to his own students. He refers to enemies by their full name with no honorific.
Reines is a special exception, where he refers to her as “kimi” (you) or “ojou-sama” (young lady) in an effort to avoid using her name as much as possible.

When requesting help from someone, he will refer to them as “lady,” “miss,” or “mister.”
He speaks like a young man who spends a great deal of time around old people. His sentences are long and meandering, like a university lecturer, and he often speaks with bitterness. He often adds qualifiers like “seems likely,” “that’s the situation,” or “perhaps that is the case.” giving the impression he is speaking of someone else’s concerns.
He speaks in a rather formal way, but often covers a wide array of topics, regularly diverging into talking about the newest things. Kind of like “for an old guy, you’ve got pretty young tastes!”

Most of his words are fairly strict, but when speaking with someone standing at a crossroads in their life, he becomes much more pleasant and agreeable, bolstering his reputation as a teacher. He is rarely excited by much, but behind closed doors, he becomes furious with his students’ shenanigans (like Flat’s).
“And now you’ve just made more work for me! I’m not even going to have time to sleep! Yes, I understand now, this is actually Hell, isn’t it? There are many depictions of Hell around the world, but one of those is surely where your students are running around causing problems at every waking moment!”
And of course, always around to watch him rant is the young lady Reines, wearing a smile as sweet as the worst medicine.

Abilities
Element: Earth.
Specialty: Counteraction, Leyline/Organic Adjustment, etc. Extremely plain.
The quality of his magic circuits is on the lower end of mediocre. As Waver, he could produce about 20 units of magical energy. At the time he became Lord El-Melloi, that increased to 70 plus 10 (similar to hidden savings thanks to magical artifacts he possesses and the rituals he uses).
※For comparison, Shirou could produce 25, and Rin could produce 500. The cutoff for a full-fledged magi is considered to be 100.

As you can see, he falls below the line for a full-fledged magus. Though his talent for adjustment lends to his abilities as a teacher, his talent in that field mostly stems from his character and personality.
Totally unsuited to combat. Though he has a number of mystic codes for self defense, he rarely carries them around.

Assistant: “That talisman in your pocket is the only one you have, Professor?! Don’t you have any other mystic codes?!”
El-Melloi: “No. They’d be useless against a real magus anyway. There’s no point carrying a thousand of them around to extend my life by a couple seconds. I’d suffocate under them before they ever got to me.”
A: “How have you survived so long then?!”
E: “That should be obvious. I don’t go anywhere that an talisman like this isn’t enough to protect me.”

Though he has learned techniques to use in combat, his output is so low that he tries to avoid using them. He doesn’t carry small weapons like handguns around either. His last line of defense is his cigars, which contain (about ten units of) magical energy.
“You thought I smoked these stupidly expensive things just to look sophisticated and eccentric?”
“Well, I guess that’s not really wrong.”

History
Eldest son of the Velvet family, who first started their study of magecraft at the beginning of the 1800s. He was considered a bit of a prodigy in his hometown.
Full of hope, he applied to enter the Clock Tower, and through his connections somehow managed to join the classroom of a certain Lord, Kayneth El-Melloi Archibald. Thus he entered a rather elite course.
However, with only two hundred years of history under their belt, the Velvet family were infants to the world of magecraft. From the perspective of the Lords, he was only fit to serve as a member of the magical working class.
Rebelling against the authority and old-fashioned structure of the Clock Tower, he joined the Fourth Holy Grail War to prove his talents. In the end, he returned as the only survivor from the war. Thus ended what he thought would be the greatest battle of his life. He returned with a quiet resolve to face the battle that was the life waiting for him.

However, that was not to be the battle of his life. What awaited him on his return would determine the course of the rest of his life. With Kayneth and Sola-Ui gone, the Archibald family began to decline. The other Lords wasted no time in pillaging the rights, mystic codes, personnel, and wealth of the fallen family. In the few months Waver spent preparing for his return from Japan, the Clock Tower had undergone a great upheaval.
Upon his return, the Archibald family was on the edge of collapse. Feeling partially responsible for Kayneth’s death, Waver did what he could to at least preserve the El-Melloi classroom, but it was all for nothing. The young and powerless Waver had no way of saving the dying El-Melloi name.

Even so, he managed to sustain the El-Melloi classroom for three years. Keeping the magi of renowned families from leaving was an impossible task, so instead he set his sights on the younger generation, those studying modern magecraft. With little interest in gathering power for himself, he had no aversions to the new agers. Convincing an old lecturer that had lost his place in the Clock Tower in a previous power struggle to take the podium once again, he created an emotional fulcrum for the new agers to operate around.
Starting as little more than a school club, they eventually rose to the level of the other classrooms of the Clock Tower, and before he realized it Waver himself had completed the necessary courses to teach the classroom in an official sense as a graduate student.
Though he had a terrible reputation among the ruling class, he had become a star of hope for the younger generation, his own distaste for that fact cementing his popularity among the students. (Occasionally, his underclassmen and friends had to fend off assassins sent by the ruling class and the Archibald family.)

Around the time the difficulties of his life had created a permanent wrinkle in his brow, he received an invitation to meet with a branch family of the Archibalds, the Archisorte family. Confused by the invitation, he was presented with Kayneth’s body that they had retrieved (with its destroyed Magic Crest), and a report on the details of the Fourth Holy Grail War. The young head of the Archisorte family, Reines, claimed to have watched his every move with admiration since he had returned to the Clock Tower. She was one of his fans, she claimed with a grin.
Waver, of course, didn’t believe her for an instant, and expected to be killed at any moment. From the perspective of the Archisorte family, Waver was the cause of their collapse. But he hadn’t stopped there. He had also stolen the rights to the El-Melloi classroom away from them, and even if it was in a bid to preserve it, ended up transforming it into something repulsive. Killing him would hardly be enough to satisfy their grudge.
Confirming that Waver was well aware of that, Reines presented him with an offer. If he accepted her terms, she would keep the details of the Fourth Holy Grail War a secret, and furthermore would guarantee his safety. In exchange, he had to agree to the following three terms:

  • Repay all of the El-Melloi’s debt.
  • Maintain the seat of Lord until Reines is old enough to take it herself.
  • Restore Kayneth Archibald’s Magic Crest (the Archi Crest).

He understood how impossible those terms would be to fulfill, but also that if he refused, he would likely be killed immediately. He did feel he bore some responsibility, so he reluctantly accepted her offer.

W: “But what do you mean by that second condition? Isn’t it basically the same as paying back the debt?
R: “Ah, that. To put it simply, someone has to take the job of Lord until I’m old enough.”
Waver immediately felt suspicious.
W: “Wait. Are you saying—”
R: “Exactly. I’m sure dealing with the other Lords will be a pain, but I’ll leave it all to you, Lord El-Melloi II. Or should I just call you my beloved older brother?”

Waver immediately collapsed. Before he could so much as stand, she continued.
“Ah, I forgot one thing. There’s a fourth condition. You also have to be my private tutor. Having a brother not related to me by blood giving me private instruction is a great form of impropriety,” said the suspiciously grinning young girl.
Ever since then, Waver took up the mantle of Lord El-Melloi II (since he was Kayneth’s successor) in the Clock Tower. Such was the birth of one of the Clock Tower’s most charismatic lecturers, destitute yet holding the position of Lord and running his own classroom and department.

“It’s not like I’m asking you to work for the rest of your life. I just want your help until the rightful glory of the title of Lord has been restored. That sounds fair to me.”
“That’s the same as saying ‘work until you die,’ you demon.”
