Erice Utsumi (宇津見エリセ, Utsumi Erise?), Class Name Lancer (ランサー, Ransā?), is a Lancer-class Servant summoned by Ritsuka Fujimaru in the Grand Orders of Fate/Grand Order.
Profile[]
Identity[]
A 14-year-old girl from a near-future Japan during the aftermath of the Holy Grail Wars, feared as the “Grim Reaper” for her work hunting down Servants as part of Mosaic City (Akihabara)’s Nightwatch.[1]
In a future timeline different from Chaldea’s, she threw herself into the Holy Grail War with the final Servant summoned into the world “Voyager”. However, even she has no idea what the result of this was.[1]
From a young age, she has been possessed by evil spirits she calls “Dread Spirits". One result of this is the spirit appearing on the surface of her body as a black sludge. To adapt to the worsening effects of the possession, she named it “Demon King (Erlkönig)” allowing her to control it at will. However, the evil spirits within are always hungry for sacrifices and if they’re not satisfied, they will consume Erice’s body.[1]
Appearance[]
Personality[]
Attached to the importance of efficiency, Erice prefers practical, functional, and durable items, tools, and clothing.[1]
She likes spicy food that is highly nutritious and isn’t overly concerned about flavor. She dislikes mages, though ironically she uses magecraft herself.[1]
Erice is well versed in Western and Eastern Heroic Spirits of modern and ancient times thanks to spending much of free time researching materials related to them. Though she uses her vast knowledge to coldly deal with Heroic Spirits, she holds deep respect towards the life they once led. This initially led her to be hostile toward Chaldea, which she thought has enslaved Heroic Spirits en masse, before learning of their mission to restore human history. While she may pretend not to care about being in Chaldea, she secretly passes everyday away, getting so excited that she nearly gets a nosebleed.[1]
She is not yet used to the fact that she currently exists as a Servant, and continues to treat Voyager as if he was her own Servant.[1]
Relationships[]
- Voyager
- "Voyager... I'm no longer his Master. And that's why what I'm about to say is probably not appropriate or even sensible, Master, but I just can't help but to give some advice. Please use him with care."[2]
- Voyager (Third Ascension)
- "Uwah, Voyager looks so grown up. I didn't know he could look like that. That's honestly unsettling. Maybe the biggest predicament in my Chaldean life. Huh? He changed for my sake? He made it so I wouldn't have to be the older sister because I couldn't handle the job? Oh, that brat. Well, I gotta be responsible to prove him wrong. Okay."[3]
- Lancelot
- "So that's the Knight of the Lake... Ah, so he's Galahad's... H-hmmm...I'm half convinced, half skeptical... Forget his normal self...I guess when someone's put in the worst situation and their unbelievable talent gets honed to the extreme...you have the recipe for a monster like that... The Round Table is terrifying."[2]
- Mash Kyrielight
- "To think that the one who fused with Mash is THE genuine Holy Knight Galahad. Is it a form of spirit possession different from the Heroic Spirit Possession that I know of…? Although, it’d be nice if that’s seen as a desirable connection from Mash's standpoint."[4]
- Knights of the Round Table and Gray
- "I'm getting a lot of hearsay from the Round Table associates on my choice of swimsuit. The weird thing is that each of them had a very different impression of it. What kind of person Sir Kay was? The mystery deepens."[3]
- Francis Drake
- "Sir Francis Drake... She single handedly sailed through the seven seas and explored the planet. A Hero who holds a special place in my heart. But it's not like I know her personally... And I'd be happy to know if she's someone special to you, too. But honestly, I didn't know she was female. ...I'm still a little rattled by that fact."[2]
- Circe
- "That island witch, she isn’t any different from the Circe I know… Then, that’s her original personality. …As expected from Greek mythology, so sinfu… No, so profound."[2]
- James Moriarty
- "Huh? I'm not saying it right? "Freikugel" is the correct term for magical bullet, and "Freischütz" means shooter? Ugh...you're right... Th-thank you for your advice...mister moustache..."[2]
- Marie Antoinette/Marie Antoinette Alter
- "Queen Marie. She's so dazzling. I can't look straight into her eyes. I don't know what it is... Is it her noble pride...her love towards all...her devotion? No... Is it her pride that enables her to be true to herself no matter what?"[2]
- Marie Antoinette
- "She's so dazzling. I can't look straight into her eyes. In my own world, in the past, I had killed that person’s son… so because of that, I completely feel indebted to her, no matter what. Though, perhaps there’s more to it than that. I looked at that person, who is pure in all respects, with suspicion without meaning to…"[4]
- Kijyo Koyo
- "I envy you, Koyo. You look terrifying, but you're still very trustworthy. Why? Well...because...my instincts tell me... Huh. Actually, I don't know why. Maybe because you look like someone I know...?"[2]
- "It’s fine Koyo-san, isn’t it? Although you’re very terrifying, you’re also someone who can be diligently relied upon. It’s disappointing that she has no memory of me and Voyager, but even so, I want to be dependable to Koyo-san."[4]
- "A Koyo that still doesn't know Karin? Koyo's case is a matter of the Throne of Heroes twisting time... And I also have some gaps in my memories. Something might cause us to remember. It's scary, but at the same time, it's irritating that it's taking this long to happen."[3]
- Amour
- "Amour... I mean...Caren. She's exactly like my teacher... No, this one still has some childlike innocence left in her. But the way she marches to the beat of her own drum, is a bit mean, and acts like she's been hurt after going through so much... She's like a fish that gets livelier in muddy water, but she envelops you so warmly. Yep, she's definitely like her. I never expected an encounter like this might be in store for me. Being a Servant sure is...hard...haha..."[2]
- "I subconsciously happen to call her “teacher”, although the other person sort of doesn’t mind much. My teacher… is one of the people who had taken the trouble to guide me from my little self, who was just like a doll, to someone who is now living as a human being. But you know, she herself was an AI, not a human. Caren-san, who is close to the original, was more intense than what I had imagined about her.”[4]
- "I keep always calling Ms. Caren "Sensei" on reflex. She didn't rebuke me specifically for it but she did tell me off with the faintest smile. "Your lexicon is lacking in variety. The Porca idiom cannot be your only poison dart. You're less of a death god and more of a god of poor vocabulary." Ah, ain't she the coolest?"[3]
- Jaguar Man
- "I feel an unknowable surge of power coming from that Mesoamerican jaguar Heroic Spirit Servant. Why does everyone call her Jaguamura?"[3]
- Sasaki Kojirou
- "See, I tried asking that samurai if his name was Tsuda and he was completely evasive with his answer. He said: "Mayhaps, yet I am Sasaki Kojirou, but one Servant of obscure grounds and career. Nothing else is needed in our noble Master's presence.". Sigh, I had a question for him..."[3]
- Napoleon Bonaparte
- "I see. Chaldea's Napoleon is an Archer. A different Servant from the Bonaparte I know. He was a Rider and much thinner. It's confusing, but that's one of the most interesting things about Servants."[3]
- Grigori Rasputin
- "That Priest... The Mad Monk Rasputin came to treat me to a wonderful meal. Aaah. That deep flavor feels nostalgic for some reason. The spice spread through my whole body. I could feel my chest sweating. Ghhhh, sorry, can I lie down for a bit?"[5]
- Elizabeth Báthory/Mecha Eli-chan/Mecha Eli-chan MkII/Nine-Tattoo Dragon Eliza
- "Eri-pie? Who taught you this nickname? Don't you think it would get confusing, with all the Elizabeths here? Well, if you really want to call me that, I won't stop you."[3]
Role[]
Fate/Grand Order[]
Board Game Apocalypse[]
- Main article: Board Game Apocalypse
Imaginary Scramble[]
Erice prevents Voyager from going into the Nautilus along with the other Foreigner Servants.
Valentine's 2021[]
When Erice, Illya, Miyu, and Kuro meet Caren C Hortensia they mistake her for the versions of Caren from their worlds.
Akihabara Explosion[]
Erice is part of the group chosen for the Akihabara Singularity since it is her hometown.
Summer 2022[]
Erice runs a theme park, Waku Waku Erice Land. Attractions include:
- An obstacle course inspired by Dan-no-Ura - Eight-Boat Leap, but it has proven too difficult for anybody besides Ushiwakamaru to clear.
- A pirate battle, but Blackbeard, Bartholomew Roberts, and Anne Bonny and Mary Read complain that their ships are way weaker than Francis Drake's and Erice is biased toward her.
- A show with the Argonauts, but she was unable to get the actual Argonauts to come. As such, Voyager is acting as Jason, Young Li Shuwen and Old Li Shuwen are acting as the Dioscuri, Orion is acting as Heracles, Robin Hood is acting as Atalanta, and Jack the Ripper is acting as Asclepius.
- A food court where all of the desserts are way too spicy for anybody to handle. Of everyone who has tried it, only Amour, Arjuna Alter, and a priest who Erice has not seen at Chaldea liked the food.
- An underwater expedition on the Nautilus where attendees take the place of Captain Nemo, but the Nemo Marines are being worked too hard to keep up with the demand and the real Nemo had to be restrained to a bed to keep from collapsing.
Wandjina World Tour[]
Abilities[]
Erice is neither a Pseudo-Servant nor a Demi-Servant, but rather a Quasi-Servant (準サーヴァント, Jun-Saavanto?, also translated as "Semi-Servant") as she is a miracle child of a human male and a female Servant. This has resulted in an incredibly odd summoning that produced neither an alternate existence nor a copy from the Throne of Heroes, but the one, true Erice. The summoning ritual is not supposed to produce genuinely living beings or "true" Heroic Spirits, but something about Erice's unique Quasi-Servant nature has enabled it.
Combat[]
In combat, Erice primarily utilizes her spear, Dread Spirits, and water in her attacks.
Skills[]
Class Skills[]
- Magic Resistance (Spirit) (B+ Rank): Nullifies Magecraft spells that were done with a chant of three verses or below. It is difficult to damage Erice who has this rank of Magical Resistance with Magecraft, even if she was targeted by Great Magecraft, Ritual Spells, and the like. Erice particularly possesses a strong resistance to encroaching-type Spiritual Bodies.[4]
- Riding (C+ Rank): In addition to small-sized vessels from both ancient and modern times, Erice can manage modernistic means of transportation such as automobiles, bikes and light aircrafts with above-average skill.[4]
- Independent Action (B Rank): A special characteristic of a Quasi-Servant. Magical Energy is necessary in the case of taking action in combat, but if it happens to be taking action in things other than that, it is possible for Erice to act just like any other normal human being without consuming Magical Energy.[4]
- Divinity (E Rank): Erice is barely being endowed with a Divinity that originates from the Underworld Goddess Izanami. This Divinity also has an effect on her Riding Skill.[4]
Personal Skills[]
- Sacred Dread Spiritualist (A Rank): Possessing the evil spirits that lurk within her blood and being especially effective as a weapon against spiritual bodies.[1]
- Freeshooter (Imitation) (Rank B): An imitation of the magical bullets wielded by the Demon Hunter Samiel of Bohemian legend.[1]
- Grim Reaper (B Rank): The delusion of having to hunt down Servants that have begun to behave wildly and strayed from the norms by displaying the extensive knowledge she has surrounding Heroic Spirits and Anti-Heroes.[1]
Noble Phantasm[]
Erice's Noble Phantasm is the spear Ame-no-Sakahoko.[1]
Forms and Alternate Versions[]
Swimsuit[]
A swimsuit is defined as a piece of clothing that can get soaked without lowering the wearer's performance. With Akihabara being converted into a coastal resort town, swimsuits are casual wear.[6]
In a future different from the one Chaldea walks towards, she enters the Holy Grail War along with Voyager, the last Servant summoned in the world. Erice still doesn't know how this ended.[6]
Since she was a child, she's been possessed by evil spirits called Dread Spirits. Her spiritual illness expresses itself as black mucous pseudo-substance oozing out of her skin. The spiritual illness, which she named Erlkönig, is a specialized weapon against Servants. It freely changes its shape and hardness to devour Spirit Cores.[6]
She holds strong feelings of awe and veneration towards heroes and that respect applies equally to their Servant copies, so she interacts with them with utmost courtesy. On the other hand, she's extremely vigilant and distrustful of modern mages.[6]
She's focused on efficiency. She likes functional and practical tools and clothes, preferring the simple but effective. Her favorite foods are spicy and highly nutritional ones. Although she loves spiciness and is indifferent to subtle changes in flavor, she is sometimes very picky about her meals.[6]
She is a special individual born from a human father and a Servant mother. For that reason, Erice manifests in a state of Quasi-Servantification: a Servant with traits closer to a living human.[6]
Abilities[]
In her swimsuit Erice shows the ability to make summer-related items with Erlkönig to use as weapons, such as an inner tube and beach ball.

- Sacred Dread Spiritualist (A Rank): By allowing the wicked spirits living in Erice's blood vessels to possess her, she can proficiently use weapons effective especially against spiritual bodies.[6]
- Border to the Underworld (C Rank): Deploys a space of curses designed for pursuit and retaliation. It's based on the Japanese myth of Yomotsu HirasakaWP and the Noble Phantasm of the god of the netherworld.[6]
- Grim Reaper (A Rank): Her firm but questionable conviction that she must hunt violent and criminal Servants. Extensive knowledge about Heroic Spirits and Anti-Heroic Spirits, plus contact with an unsavory secret they consider their "original sin".[6]
- Noble Phantasm
Erice's Noble Phantasm is Ame-no-Kagaminofune.[6]
Development[]
Creation and Conception[]
Erice Utsumi was designed by NOCO in Fate/Grand Order. Her scenario writer is Meteo Hoshizora in Fate/Grand Order.[4]
Comment from Illustrator[]
"Ms. Erice was happy that the ideas came to me relatively smoothly. There was also a discussion where she was initially going to have a design with a black colour theme, but given that I wanted to let people have the image of primitive Japanese clothes when looking at her, I tried to make a white colour base for her design theme. It was fun to draw a large number of different facial expressions on her too. Her miffed face and cat face are my favourite." (NOCO)[4]
