Fate/Samurai Remnant (フェイト/サムライレムナント?) is a video game released in late September 2023. It is an action RPG developed by Koei Tecmo Games subsidiary Omega ForceWP, with TYPE-MOON supervising the project.
Plot[]
« “Your wish shall perish..." » |
It is the fourth year of the Keian EraWP (1651) during the Edo PeriodWP, in a timeline designated for pruning.[2] Lone swordsman, Miyamoto Iori, the adopted son of Miyamoto Musashi, is suddenly dragged into a hidden conflict known as the Waxing Moon Ritual. There, seven Masters and Servants fight over the "Waxing Moon", artifact similar to the Holy Grail which could grant any and all wishes.[3]
Fate/Samurai Remnant has three diverging routes that the story can follow based on Iori's choices:
- Flames of Resentment diverges in chapter 4 if Iori chooses to pursue Tsuchimikado Yasuhiro. It focuses on Chiemon, and Lancer.
- A Ray of Light diverges in chapter 4 if Iori chooses to pursue Assassin. It focuses on Dorothea Coyett, Yui Shousetsu, Zheng Chenggong, and Caster.
- Entreat the Darkness is only available in new game plus after clearing one of the other two routes. It diverges in chapter 5 if Iori chooses not to destroy the Grail. It focuses on Iori and Saber.
In addition, there is a secret joke ending obtained by completing Gilgamesh's digressions.
Fate/Samurai Remnant later features a DLC with a new storyline involving the Keian Command Championship, which occurs after the second chapter. There are seven routes featuring the Masters challenging each other with their own endings.

Battle has you primarily taking control of Miyamoto Iori. He primarily fights using his twin swords, switching between five different stances, each with their own unique characteristics. If he is unable to use his sword for certain enemies, he can use Magecraft to counter them. When playing as Iori, your Servant will be mainly independently controlled, however you can temporarily take control of your Servant for a limited time. Certain enemies cannot be damaged by Iori's swords, however, if the enemy's Shell Gauge is depleted by Saber's Affinity Technique, Iori's attacks will be able to reach them.[6]
Exploration has you and your Servant wandering through various districts of the city of Edo. Where you can fight with other Masters and learn more techniques. Or interact with the townspeople, replenish energy from food stalls, and play with dogs and cats which can increase your affinity technique with your Servant.[6] [7]
Throughout the game, you will eventually come across Rogue Servants, who you can recruit to fight by Iori and Saber's side by meeting certain conditions. Doing so, you will be able to swap between Saber and the other Servant in the middle of combat as a playable character or have them support you in battle as an AI companion.[8]

Development[]
The origins of Fate/Samurai Remnant come from a lunch between Kinoko Nasu, Takashi Takeuchi, and Koei Tecmo's CEO Kou Shibusawa. Shibusawa is an avid player of Fate/Grand Order, and one of the things they talked about at that lunch was how his favorite story in the game is Shimousa, especially Musashi. As a result of that lunch and his appreciation for Grand Order, Shibusawa and producer Tomohiko Sho put together a proposal for Koei Tecmo to make a Fate game and presented it to TYPE-MOON. The entire Fate/Grand Order writing team got together to make the cliffnotes version of the plot and character profiles, and Koei Tecmo wrote the script based on those notes, with supervision from Yuuichirou Higashide and Hikaru Sakurai. Feeling that a Fate game needed the best staff, Shibusawa told the producer to use the writing team from Fire Emblem: Three HousesWP.[12]
It was announced during the Fate Project New Year's Eve TV Special 2022 (Fate Project 大晦日TVスペシャル2022?) on December 31, 2022.
The opening animation was produced by CloverWorksWP, and directed by Nakaya Onsen.
According to Tomohiko Sho, initially it was thought by Koei Tecmo team for the game to be set in the Sengoku PeriodWP in Japan. The period in which they are experts, and it is also one of the most exciting periods in Japanese history. As they talked with TYPE-MOON, instead of a period of conflict they became convinced that the tranquility and peace of the Edo period would be more attractive to represent the unique aspects of the Fate series.[13]
Koei Tecmo requested several Servants to be in the game. Some were accepted, such as Musashi and Jeanne Alter, but others the writers had to deny for reasons like they'd be too strong or were too major of a figure. As they built the roster the writers felt they had too many Japanese Servants and so chose ones from different eras who hadn't interacted with each other before to compensate.[14] Miyamoto Iori was originally one of these proposed Servants, but when Nasu saw him on the list he decided that Iori should be the main character, not a Servant. This decision was one that defined much of the project.[15]
