Fernando Croze (フェルナンド・クローズ, Ferunando Kurōzu?) is one of the people involved in the Contract of Atlas incident of Lord El-Melloi II Case Files.
Profile[]
Background[]
A priest dispatched to Gray's old home, Blackmore Cemetery.
Though a member of the Holy Church, he is neither an Executor, nor a man with any connections to the central organization. Though he has knowledge of Mystery and magecraft, he is fundamentally just an ordinary person. For places where the potential need for aggressive action is low, people like this are often sent.[2]
Fernando was assigned to Blackmore Cemetery only several years prior to the events of Lord El-Melloi II Case Files. He is considered an outsider to the villagers, and Lord El-Melloi II suggests he will not think about his experiences in the village after he departs on another assignment.[3] Ten years ago he alerted the Holy Church when Gray's face changed to resemble King Arthur's, though he was more concerned with the villagers' change in how they acted toward her than in Gray's face itself.[4]
Appearance[]
Fernando Croze is an overweight middle-aged man with a triple chin, though "spherical" may be a more apt description. He looks more like a ball of fat than a person.[5]
Personality[]
Depending on the situation, rather than resorting to violence, people who are able to gently win over others show better results. The Holy Church is well aware of that. For that reason, after reporting about Gray’s transformation, he suffered no small amount as Sister Ilumia was dispatched and their village became a front line of sorts.[2] Fernando and Ilumia are in different factions within the Holy Church. If they had lived even a few centuries earlier, no doubt Ilumia would have hunted him down for heresy.[4]
The funeral prayer Gray offered in the Castle of Separation was taught to her by Fernando. “When someone has been driven mad by loss, even if only a little, offer solace first. The question of the existence or lack of faith can be dealt with later.” Such was the way he taught Gray of the balance struck by the Blackmore Cemetery, no matter that it clearly contradicted the teachings of the Holy Church.[2]
He agrees with the Holy Church's stance that King Arthur is a heretic and as such wants to prevent her revival. However, Fernando feels that that has nothing to do with Gray, that the villagers of Blackmore Cemetery are simply pushing past beliefs onto future generations and forcing others to be sacrificed.[4]
Role[]
Lord El-Melloi II Case Files[]
Father Fernando, accompanied by Sister Ilumia, is the first villager Lord El-Melloi II and Reines El-Melloi Archisorte meet alongside Bersac Blackmore. When they do their introductions, his lack of reaction to the El-Melloi name indicates that he is not a part of the World of Magecraft. Having been invited by a devotee, Fernando takes his leave and lets Bersac be the one guiding the newcomers to the church to pray to the Black Madonna since he is too busy to do so.[5]
He was gravely injured by the Corpse King's skeletal minions when the temple in the swamp rose to the surface.[6] When the Corpse King died, Logos React began to malfunction and sucked all of the residents of Blackmore Cemetery inside of itself, including Fernando.[7]
case. Atlas' contract[]
This arc takes place inside a simulation of the village created by Logos React, with a simulation of Fernando included.
After Gray and her friends defeated Logos React's avatar the citizens trapped inside it were freed, including Fernando who, while in critical condition, had not actually died yet. Ilumia rushed him to a hospital.[7]
Abilities[]
« "Hear this, all ye people; give ear, all ye inhabitants of the world, both low and high, rich and poor together. |
(Fernando's Baptism Sacrament, taken from Psalm 49) |
Although he is fundamentally just an ordinary person,[2] as a member of the Church Fernando is capable of using Baptism Sacraments. He uses one such Sacrament to destroy some of the skeleton minions of the Corpse King, and is able to repeatedly cast the spell countless times in order to wipe out a large group of the undead. His Baptism Sacraments are not even as strong as a typical Single Count spell, but he believes calculating magical power in this way only matters to the Mage's Association. Due to his obesity and lack of training in combat, he stumbles and trips over himself when attempting to fight alongside Ilumia on a battlefield.[1] He has no other special abilities beyond his Baptism Rites.[4]

- ↑ Lord El-Melloi II Case Files Volume 6: case. Atlas Contract (Upper) - Chapter 4 Part 3
