Map of the Singularity.

The first Magical Girl was a demon raised amongst humans and fought for them.[1] She became best friends with a girl named Mila but was forced to kill her when Mila became the first corrupt Magical Girl.[2] Due to her hiding her identity, she was forgotten by both humans and her brethren following her death and passed into legend as the First Lady, the first Magical Girl. Eventually, her regret over killing Mila triggered the formation of a Reality Marble. As well, her desire to spread the Magical Girls' magic of love and throughout the world attracted Echoes, the spirits of failed Magical Girls, from various worlds.[1] Their despair and obsession to remain as Magical Girls became a flow of magical energy. Using this flow, the First Lady formed and sustained the Reality Marble as an Echo.[1]

As part of her plan to grant her wish, the First Lady gave the Echoes temporary bodies and magical energy. She then instigated the Magical Girls into killing each other to try and establish their own kingdoms.[1] Only a few proved strong enough to survive this conflict and each was granted a jewel that granted them absolute authority in their respective kingdoms.[3] The survivors included: Connacht ☆ Medb, Nursery ☆ Rhyme, Medical ☆ Medea, and Mahatma ♀ Helena. Medb, the strongest Magical Girl, founded the Land of Snow and Honey.[4] Nursery ☆ Rhyme founded the Land of Sweets.[5] Medea founded the Land of Dragons and Sea, where she isolated herself out of despair of killing other Magical Girls.[3] Helena founded the Land of Dead Bookshelves, serving as the grave keeper for the Echoes.[6] Medb eventually became the First Lady's servant and was made to gather more Magical Girls for her.[7] However, none could grant the First Lady's wish because they weren't real Magical Girls. Thus she determined she needed a real one.[1]

Meanwhile, Mila, an Echo thanks to her brief time as a Magical Girl, sought to save her friend from her regret. Her wish to do so opened a leyline to the outside and summoned Chloe von Einzbern into the Reality Marble.[2] Chloe arrived during the Magical Girl conflicts and hid her presence until her magical energy was depleted.[1] That was when she met the First Lady through a familiar and became her vessel.[2] The First Lady then found a way to peer into parallel worlds and found the Magical Girl ideal for her plan, Miyu Edelfelt.[1][2] So while Miyu and Illyasviel von Einzbern were headed for the Mirror World, The First Lady ambushed and brought them into the Reality Marble.[4][8]

Upon arriving, Illya and Miyu were attacked by Medb, who started to rebel against the First Lady and recruit Magical Girls to her side.[7] The First Lady took advantage of this and captured Miyu while disguised as a familiar of Medb's.[6] She then imprisoned Miyu in her castle and restrained her in the Anti-Magical Girl Mystic Code, Voile de Deuil.[6][1] Meanwhile, possessing magical energy greater than the First Lady at the time, Medb opened a leyline to Chaldea and inadvertently summoned Mash Kyrielight and Ritsuka Fujimaru as the former's familiar into the Reality Marble.[2]

History[]

Grave of the Abandoned[]

Person A asks Person B if they can be friends forever and ever. The latter calls the former idiot, asking if they had forgotten they screamed at them “I’m done with you!” yesterday. Person A admits they did, but thinks it’s fine since they’re both magical girls.[4]

Unaware what a magical girl is, Person B assumes her friend meant witch and calls it a failure for her to admit to her own immaturity. She also doubts she has any talent for magic since she can only seem to read some spell tomes. Person A thinks that is plenty talented, though, given she herself can’t do it.[4]

Person B tells her to give up before she even starts and suggests she study runes first if she wants to use magic properly. Briefly forgetful again, Person A promises to do her best studying. Person B exasperated by her friend’s forgetfulness.[4]

Mash wakes up Ritsuka in a grassy field. It seems they have experienced an unexpected rayshift, though it seems to be just the two of them. Where they are is a mystery to the point Mash feels it is a different world.[4]

Ritsuka suggests they explore. Mash agrees to do so with caution when she hears something cheerful sounding coming toward them. She tries to protect Ritsuka from it when it collides with her head on knocking her over.[4]

What crashed into Mash turns out to be a talking stick. It apologizes for what happened, but sensing they’re outsiders from their magical energy, it requests the pair’s help. It explains someone scary is chasing them, adding they were fighting when it got launched into the air. Mash is surprised there is fighting in such a seemingly peaceful place and asks who the talking stick is. The talking stick proudly introduces itself as the Magical Stick of Love and Justice, Magical Ruby.[4]

The three are then suddenly attacked by a barrage of spells from the air by Medb. Ruby recognizes her as the one who attacked her and her master. Ritsuka and Mash feel this Medb differs from the Medb they know. Medb introduces herself as the Magical Girl of Honey and Geis, Connacht ☆ Medb, the queen who rules the Land of Snow and Honey.[4]

She demands Ritsuka and Mash hand over Ruby immediately and summons monsters. Ruby refuses to let Medb be her master, however. Medb’s monsters come closer, prompting Ritsuka and Mash to fight them.[4]

After her monsters are slain, Medb concludes they can’t fight at full strength in the neutral zone. Mash tries to stop her from summoning more, but her attacks are ineffectual for some reason. Even so, she refuses to retreat because otherwise they’ll be captured by Medb.[4]

Ruby’s master then appears, exhausted from running. Impressed she survived being hit by her chariot, Medb asks for her name and invites her into her army. The girl introduces herself as Illyasviel von Einzbern. She rehects Medb’s invitation and demands she return Miyu , her best friend. She then transforms into a Magical Girl with Ruby.[4]

Medb decides to kill Illya upon seeing her transformation, but Illya easily overwhelms her with two magical blasts. Fortunately for Medb, though, Mini Cú shields her from the third blast that was meant to finish her off. The two of them then withdraw.[4]

After they’re gone, llya suddenly returns to normal because of the magical energy feed from Ruby not stabilizing for some reason.[4]

Illya explains she and her friends were traveling from her world to the “Mirror World“ when an unknown force took them to the current location. Miyu Edelfelt was immediately kidnapped by a magical creature and that is when Medb appeared proclaiming herself a magical girl and attacked unprovoked.[4]

Mash understands Illya and her friends come from a parallel world different from Chaldea’s Earth. Illya asks Ritsuka and Mash what their Earth is like, but they hesitant to answer.[4]

Ruby confesses to Mash that she analyzed her when they collided earlier, concluding she has a rare class of Heroic Spirit installed. Mash confirms she is a Shielder, though she hasn’t a clue what Ruby means by “installed”. She tries to explain what she is when Illya cuts off to tell Ruby she can’t seem to install the Class Card, meaning Miyu can’t either.[4]

Mash finds it very unusual for there to be a spell to let a Heroic Spirit temporarily into one’s body. It is similar to Pseudo-Servants, but those are exceptions only used during the Grand Order. Mash wonders then if Miyu’s kidnapping is connected to the fact she and Illya use the same kind of magecraft.[4]

Ritsuka realizes a Demi-Servant is similar to a magical girl, embarrassing Mash when Ruby concurs she has magical girl potential. Romani Archaman then makes contact and reveals they’re inside someone’s Reality Marble.[4]

Meanwhile, elsewhere, Magical Sapphire finds Miyu restrained by lace ribbons. She prepares to use her blade mode to cut Miyu free when Miyu warns the ribbons are draining her of all her power and fears the same will happen to Sapphire. She tells her to find Illya and warn her about how dangerous this castle is and how terrifying their foe is. Sapphire complies, promising Miyu she’ll come back for her.[4]

A Strange, Strange Land of Sweets[]

Romani explains what a Reality Marble is, though he has never he heard of one on this scale. Ilya recalls when she first jumped into this world, she saw for an instant many castles and kingdoms and an area surrounded by a black wall for a second when she first jumped into this world. She is shocked to know all of that was made by one person.[5]

Mash asks Romani if he can give Illya temporary refuge in Chaldea. He refuses as the rayshift only works for Ritsuka, Mash, and Ritsuka’s Servants. Interfering with other eras too much would also go against Chaldea’s goals of protecting humanity. But Mash reveals Illya is from a parallel world, and there wouldn’t be any era interference since events are inside a reality marble. Illya, however, refuses to take refuge in Chaldea, needing to save Miyu.[5]

Ritsuka thinks now would be a good chance to power Mash up. Leonardo da Vinci, who has been listening to the conversation, agrees with Ritsuka, and theorizes Mash cannot currently use her full strength because she doesn’t fully meet the Reality Marble’s conditions. She thinks it could be a good learning experience for both Mash and Chaldea.[5]

Romani relents and says the staff will continue to monitor the Reality Marble and the rayshifts. He orders Ritsuka and Mash to return to Chaldea, at least temporarily. But Mash decides to stay behind to protect Illya, knowing she can at least fight monsters. Ritsuka rayshifts back to Chaldea once Mash establishes the summoning circle.[5]

Upon returning to Chaldea, Ritsuka is shown a video by Romani that was recorded when they and Mash before they were suddenly transported into the Reality Marble. It shows Ritsuka taking a nap in the command room, with Mash trying to wake them up. Suddenly Mash is rapidly shifting back and forth between her regular and Servant form before the video ends with a flash of white.[5]

Romani tells Ritsuka they can interpret the video later and leaves Mash to their judgement. Da Vinci seemed to have noticed something but when Romani asked her, she only laughed and said “it’s still a secret”.[5]

As for Illya, Romani reminds Ritsuka they are a member of Chaldea above all else, and the one Master who can bring about humanity’ preservation. He advises them not to forget Chaldea’s mission and to be cautious in all their judgments, even cold at times.[5]

Ritsuka asks where Da Vinci is. Romani tells them she is in her lab, adding she has something for them. He recommends picking it before they go.[5]

On their way to Da Vinci’s lab, Ritsuka runs into the Phantom of the Opera and Blackbeard. The latter had heard Ritsuka was “invited” to a world of magical girls. He raves about magical girls for a bit before demanding Ritsuka they take him with them. Ritsuka ignores him and continues on toward Da Vinci’s lab.[5]

After retrieving the aforementioned item from Da Vinci’s lab, Ritsuka returns to the Reality Marble and is immediately informed by Ruby that Illya and Mash were abducted by the residents of the Land of Sweets.[5]

Land of Sweets

Land of Sweets

Meanwhile, in the Land of Sweets, the candylanders swarm Illya and Mash, begging them to stay forever. Ritsuka and Ruby quickly arrive. Mash explains she tried asking the candylanders for information about the area, only for them to suddenly abduct her and Illya.[5]

The candylanders are overly rowdy, so Ritsuka tells Mash to calm down somehow. Mash turns into her Servant form followed by Illya turning into her magical girl form.[5]

However, the candylanders all run away upon learning Illya is a magical girl. Illya uses this to her advantage to coerce information out of one of them. The heroes learn the Queen of the Land of Sweets may know something, so they head for Candy Castle.[5]

But first Mash asks Ritsuka about the head accessory they’re wearing that looks like Fou’s ears. Ritsuka reveals it’s a Mystic Code Da Vinci gave them. Mash can only assume it has a function in this world. The heroes continue on their way.[5]

Entering Candy Castle’s throne room, the heroes are welcomed by the queen, Nursery ☆ Rhyme, much to Ritsuka’s surprise. Romani says she is s Servant but confirms she is not the Reality Marble. But she is also simultaneously a Master, though that could be attributed to her ability to control magical beings.[5]

Nursery ☆ Rhyme agrees to tell Illya what she knows about her friend and Ritsuka if there are other magical girls if they play with her. Illya suggests they play later, but Nursery ☆ Rhyme as her only playmate is a black sheep. Said black sheep turns out to be the Demon God Glasya-Labolas when she summons it, though.[5]

She complains she has grown tired of the candylanders as they break too easily for her to play with. She doesn’t blame though, considering they were once human. But according to her, Glasya-Labolas is kinder than anyone and will play with her forever. Left with no other choice, the heroes then “play” with Nursery ☆ Rhyme and Glasya-Labolas.[5]

Pleased with the outcome, Nursery ☆ Rhyme agrees to help Illya find Miyu. But upon learning Miyu is a magical girl, she tells her to give up. She explains the Reality Marble is a world where magical girls gather who will disappear when they stop "playing". She, like Medb, is one of the magical girls who was able to create their own kingdoms. Those kingdoms being the Land of Sweets, the Land of Dragons and Sea, the Land of Dead Bookshelves, and the Land of Snow and Honey.[5]

As thanks for playing with her, Nursery ☆ Rhyme gives Illya a jewel, saying it may help her find Miyu. Illya reluctantly accepts it after a bit of convincing from Ritsuka and Mash, promising to give it back to her later. Nursery ☆ Rhyme simply smiles.[5]

Outside the castle, Mash realizes her attacks were more effective on Nursery ☆ Rhyme compared to Medb. Ruby attributes it to her Magical Girl power increasing. The jewel then suddenly glows and points towards the Land of Dragons and Sea.[5]

Meanwhile, Miyu demands her captor undo her restraints. Her captor compliments Miyu’s magical energy flowing through her restraints, the Voile de Deueli. But it isn’t just her magical energy, Miyu’s very existence functions as a superb vessel. Her captor only needs a little more for it to reach the outside world and fulfill her dream.[5]

Miyu complains her captor won’t even show her face, so the latter introduces herself as the First Lady. She claims no magical girl can resist her and forcibly kisses Miyu until she bites her lip. Amused by Miyu’s stubbornness, she reveals the Voile de Deueli are alive and wonders if the spell eating away at Miyu’s Magic Circuits will reach her subconsciousness first or if Illya will arrive first. Either way, she will accomplish the dream of abandoned girls.[5]

The Land of Dragons and Sea[]

Now sailing the ocean, the heroes take the time to have lunch. While they’re eating, Romani, recalling Illya mentioned she and her friends had trouble moving to the Mirror World, asks her how she returns to her original world. Illya admits she wasn’t thinking about it all, so Romani asks Ruby.[3]

Ruby explains neither Illya nor Miyu know spells that advanced. More precisely, even if they could cast such spells, they wouldn’t have the skill and knowledge to select a return location accurately. Ruby needs them to figure it out for themselves and has no issue with it.[3]

Illya complains about Ruby’s attitude, but admits her focus on Miyu made her forget a lot of things. She thinks about everyone back home when she suddenly realizes she forgot she left Chloe von Einzbern back in the real world. She describes Chloe as her twin sister of sorts, saying it’s a long story.[3]

Romani, though he doesn’t want to make empty promises, promises to do all he can. But he calls the fact Illya’s and Chaldea’s worlds are somehow magically connect dangerous.[3]

As for news on the Reality Marble, he starts to say he is working on it when he detects wyverns fast approaching the heroes’ ship. The jewel is pointing in the same direction, so at Ritsuka’s behest, the heroes fight the wyverns.[3]

On another ship, “Medea Lily” reports to Mini Jason that the heroes have broken through the wyverns and are now approaching, much to his annoyance, as he can clearly see it himself. But he expected the heroes would slay the wyverns without issue, revealing he sent them to lull the heroes into a false sense of security so he can eliminate them in one fell swoop.[3]

Medea, in response to Mini Jason’s demands, releases her Magical Ship in a Bottle. She apologizes to him that she could only prepare it with five dozen Dragon Tooth Warriors and a ram with a curse that decays the enemy’s keel. Then, on her command, the galley charges at the heroes’ ship.[3]

The heroes defeat the Dragon Tooth Warriors that boarded the ship when they’re greeted by Medea, who introduces herself as the Magical Girl of Love and Healing, Medical ☆ Medea. She asks which kingdom’s magical girl they killed to get her jewel. Illya asserts Nursery ☆ Rhyme gave it without bloodshed.[3]

Medea realizes Illya has come for her jewel. As a magical girl, Illya isn’t someone she can welcome, but as a queen, she can’t ignore her either. She invites the heroes to her castle, wanting to praise their bravery and recklessness in gathering jewels.[3]

Inside her castle, Medea reveals she is not the Servant Medea like Ritsuka suspected but is merely modelled after her. Compared to the Servant System, which is active, she and the others are passive and born from unconscious. Their purpose was different from the start; they weren’t summoned but wished to be this way.[3]

Arriving in her throne room, Medea decides she will not turn Ritsuka into a pig like she originally intended now that she understands their circumstances. But she refuses to leave Illya alone because the latter is a magical girl. Mini Jason, however, telepathically convinces Medea to cease her sneak attack on Illya upon recognizing her honest nature.[3]

Medea offers to never interfere with the heroes’ affairs if they never interfere with her kingdom. But she refuses to hand over her jewel, as it supports her kingdom and grants her power.[3]

She reveals the Reality Marble once had many magical girls, but they warred against each other, trying to establish their own kingdoms. She killed many magical girls during this time and her jewel grew in weight and shone brighter with every kill until it became the catalyst of her kingdom.[3]

Ritsuka asks her about the area outside the kingdoms’ jurisdiction. Medea reveals that is the Neutral Zone, a buffer zone where a magical girl cannot receive the blessings.[3]

Equating the loss of her jewel to her own death, Medea demands the heroes leave her kingdom. She tells Illya she can use the jewel to create whatever she wants, like a kingdom of friends. But Illya doesn’t want more friends and only wants to return to her world with Miyu.[3]

Medea, however, reveals magical girls cannot leave the Reality Marble and believes Illya will use the jewel’s power in the end. She tells her to give up on Miyu and offers to teach her how to make friends, seeing that as the best way to Nursery ☆ Rhyme’s memory, revealing she disappeared after giving her jewel as they’re what keeps magical girls alive. Illya laments over Nursery ☆ Rhyme, but even so, she refuses to give up, causing Medea to finally snap and fight the heroes.[3]

Refusing to be defeated, Medea prepares to transform into her adult self, despite Mini Jason’s pleas for her not to. But Illya refuses to stop any longer as she only came to save Miyu, not destroy Medea’s kingdom, proclaiming she’ll find a way to save Miyu without the jewels. That is why she doesn’t want to fight Medea anymore, believing Medea created her kingdom to fight for something she holds dear.[3]

But Mini Jason reveals Medea created her kingdom out of debt to him. She had been protecting her jewel out of fear of other magical girls, and under Mini Jason’s advisement, isolated herself so as not to become a witch. If she ever leaves, she will turn into a witch and thus into another Echo.[3]

Mini Jason gives Medea’s jewel to Illya, not wanting Medea to become a witch. Medea accepts the outcome but remains silent on the subjects of magical girls fighting. She will disappear like all the girls she has slain, but thanks to her lingering attachments, it will take a while.[3]

Returning to the ship, Illya determines they need to find the Reality Marble’s owner to get a clue on Miyu’s whereabouts.[3]

Meanwhile, Miyu sees the dream of a magical girl mourning the death of her friend Mila.[3]

The Land of Dead Bookshelves[]

Land of Dead Bookshelves

Land of Dead Bookshelves

Following the light of the jewels, the heroes arrive in the Land of Dead Bookshelves, which seems devoid of life. Mash takes notice of a large black wall, but Romani can’t seem to scan past it.[6]

A ghost then suddenly appears. As it’s alone, Ritsuka advises they go around it when it suddenly leaves for the black wall. Illya thanks Mash for not hurting the ghost. She admits she is worried about the ghost because, while it did terrify her, it also seemed sad.[6]

Land of Dead Bookshelves Library Exterior

Mahatma ♀ Helena's library exterior

The heroes proceed to the kingdom’s center, and it is still empty. The guiding light of the jewels has also disappeared, so Illya transforms to get an overview of the area.[6]

While she does that, Ritsuka tells Mash about what happened in the control room. Mash admits her memories from the time she visited the control room until the rayshift are hazy. She didn’t worry about it, though, and wonders it’s because she was swept away in the Reality Marble’s aura or because she changed.[6]

Suddenly, Ritsuka and Mash hear Illya screaming when they see many ghosts emerge from the walls of the buildings. These are clearly hostile, so Ritsuka and Mash fight through and rendezvous with Illya.[6]

The ghosts are strong and more keep coming, much to Illya’s worry. Fortunately, they all retreat when Mahatma ♀ Helena comes out of the central building (which was empty earlier) to see what the commotion is about. She is shocked to see a magical girl would still visit a land drained of its magical energy.[6]

Illya asks her if she is the Land of Dead Bookshelves’ magical girl. Helena confirms she is at least one of them, and apologizes for the brutal welcoming the others gave the heroes. She reveals this land is the graveyard of magical girls and the ghosts were once magical girls. But she is a gravekeeper/librarian, not a queen, and hasn’t been a magical girl for a long time.[6]

Romani reassures Illya that Helena is not a ghost, adding she has a Spirit Origin response similar to a Servant like the other magical girls. He wonders then if she was camouflaging her life signs.[6]

Helena recognizes Romani’s communications as a leyline directly linked to a parallel world and concludes that is how “she” found a way to the outside world. Illya assumes she means Medb. Helena brings the heroes into her library so she may continue talking without danger.[6]

Inside Helena’s library, Ruby shivers at the sight of all the books, knowing what they are, but declines to tell the ignorant Illya. Illya notices a stuffed lion—Mini Edison. Helena says he was her former partner, and he hasn’t spoken in a long time.[6]

Romani realizes why he couldn’t scan the library’s interior, revealing to Ritsuka and Mash that every book is a grimoire. Helena reveals the Land of Dead Bookshelves is called such because the ghosts and grimoires were all once magical girls. It is the graveyard of those poor girls who were plunged into this world. They are called Echoes, the echoes of magical girls, and they sleep in the form of grimoires.[6]

Helena presumes the Echoes outside attacked the heroes because either they wanted someone to join them or they wanted a rival to match spells with as they once did. They don’t attack her because her role is to serve guests and possesses the jewel that symbolizes her role.[6]

Ritsuka asks her if she is the Reality Marble’s owner. Helena answers she is not and reveals it was created by a magical girl called the First Lady according to the Echoes. She resides in the Reality Marble’s center beyond the black wall, which cannot be destroyed by or be perceived beyond by any magic.[6]

Illya asks Helena who Medb is then. Helena says Medb is a powerful magical girl, but she isn’t the First Lady. She asks Illya why she is so fixated on Medb. Illya tells her how Medb kidnapped her friend Miyu. Helena finds that strange as she thought Medb only wanted the jewels and wonders if the First Lady is responsible for this change.[6]

Romani notes Helena seems knowledgeable about parallel worlds. Helena reveals all the Reality Marble’s magical girls were once girls from parallel worlds who couldn’t become magical girls in their own anymore. They had no choice nor anywhere else to go, and it’s only here they could continue being magical girls. It is their paradise in a sense and their final destination.[6]

Ritsuka calls it a Throne of Heroes for magical girls, but Helena insists it is nothing as noble or innocent as that. The girls here just pathetically clung to the idea of being magical girls and fought until they ended up as ideas…. Echoes.[6]

Though she would rather not know, Mash asks if she was summoned as a magical girl too. Helena all but confirms it, revealing Ritsuka is her familiar, and calls her the Dangerous Beast-type Magical Girl, Squishy Mash, much to Mash’s embarrassment.[6]

Moving on, Helena tries to give Illya her jewel, unconcerned that the Echoes will attack her without it. She isn’t a magical girl anymore, so she doesn’t care about the jewel’s power. She tells Illya there is no need to hesitate, believing she will eventually meet the same fate when the world abandons her, when she loses her wish.[6]

But she tells Illya her assumption that it wasn’t Medb who kidnapped Miyu, but the First Lady. She always assumed the First Lady silently monitored the world from beyond the black wall by transforming her familiars to blend with those of other magical girls. She thinks Illya may get closer to the truth if she asks Medb if the latter lets her live.[6]

Illya thanks Helena for the information, but she refuses to take her jewel. Helena reveals, however, all the jewels are needed to bypass the black wall because according to the Echoes they are crystallized emotions that grant wishes. They should be able to cross the wall and even reach into the outside world, though Helena warns that may be what the First Lady wants.[6]

Ruby theorizes the First Lady’s familiars can bypass the black wall, but she doubts the First Lady would let others control them. Illya realizes that means the First Lady is deliberately making the magical girls and decides she must be stopped. But Helena advises against fighting the First Lady, for her power in this world is absolute.[6]

Both Ritsuka and Illya tell Helena that she can’t give up yet. Helena considers that an insult to her and the others as the grimoires all shake violently in response to Illya’s words for thinking they just accepted their fate. Still, Illya refuses to give up, saying she can’t accept someone else’s despair until she tried everything else herself. She is also certain Miyu hasn’t given up either.[6]

Ritsuka tells Helena she is here to bring Illya hope. Helena considers that empty consolation and gets angry at Ritsuka for thinking they know her story. She is tired and just wants it all to be over. She demands Illya take her jewel, forcing her to fight.[6]

Illya defeats Helena, but the heroes are still against the idea of taking her jewel and exposing her to danger. Ritsuka thus demands Helena join them. Helena reluctantly accepts under the pretense of seeing Illya’s demise.[6]

Meanwhile, in the Land of Snow and Honey, Mini Cú reports to Medb that the balance of the Bounded Field is collapsing. Medb concludes it is now time for her army to march and sounds the horn.[6]

The Land of Snow and Honey[]

Returning to the Neutral Zone, the heroes agree to return to the Land of Sweets to check on Nursery ☆ Rhyme per Illya’s request even though the light of the jewels is pointing toward the Land of Snow and Honey.[7]

Returning to the Neutral Zone, the heroes agree to return to the Land of Sweets to check on Nursery ☆ Rhyme per Illya’s request even though the light of the jewels is pointing toward the Land of Snow and Honey.[7]

Before they go, though, Ritsuka asks Helena what sort of magical girl Medb is. Helena calls Medb the strongest magical girl, as self-belief is the source of a magical girl’s power. Medb could thus maintain her sanity, unlike the magical girls. She was in the Reality Marble before Helena arrived and the two traveled together for a time. But Helena left Medb when the latter became obsessed with control.[7]

Illya realizes Medb’s attempt to recruit her into her army was why she mistakenly thought she abducted Miyu. Helena sees Medb still hasn’t given up on forming the Little Witch Codes to rebel against the First Lady’s rule.[7]

The heroes are then suddenly attacked by Medb’s monsters. Helena leaves the fighting to the others as she doesn’t want to fight against Medb and not to mention her power greatly diminished inside the Neutral Zone. With that said, Mash and Illya transform and fight Medb’s monsters.[7]

After the monsters are slain, Ritsuka and Mash fear they’ll be unable to return to Chaldea when they’re unable to contact Romani. Fortunately, Romani reestablishes contact with them but reveals Chaldea was attacked. Hostiles had been sent over using Chaldea’s own leyline connection, meaning the disconnect RItsuka and Mash experienced earlier was intentional. On-call Servants had repelled the attack, but they can’t keep doing it.[7]

Romani therefore orders Ritsuka and Mash to return immediately. However, he knows they won’t say yes so easily, but he needs them to understand this is urgent. He severs the connection to prevent any effects from the heroes’ side, giving Ritsuka and Mash five minutes to make a decision before he contacts them again.[7]

It suddenly starts to snow, signifying that Medb is attacking the surrounding lands. Ruby convinces Mash to deactivate her transformation to save energy now that she is solely dependent on Ritsuka’s magical energy with the connection with Chaldean gone.[7]

Helena agrees with Ritsuka that they need to pinpoint the cause of the assault on Chaldea. However, Ritsuka and Mash returning to Chaldea will solve the issue, nor will it go away on its own. Ritsuka and Mash thus agree to stay and continue to help Illya.[7]

With that settled, Ruby then has Illya teach how to recharge her magical energy through kissing. But just when Mash is about to kiss Ritsuka, Romani reestablishes contact to hear their decision. He seemingly disappointed by their decision and severs the connection again for the time being,[7]

The heroes travel to the Land of Sweets, only to find it has been assimilated into the Land of Snow and Honey as revealed by Mini Cú. Ritsuka asks him if he and Medb were the ones who sent hostiles into Chaldea. Mini Cú realizes Medb no longer needs to steal the First Lady’s power, if that is the case. The heroes then fight his monsters despite Mash being weakened in Medb’s territory.[7]

After his monsters are slain, Mini Cú unleashes his Noble Phantasm, Gentle Bite Coinchenn, on Illya, even though he knows Medb wants to recruit her. Mash fortunately protects Illya when Sapphire suddenly arrives. At Ruby’s behest, she makes a temporary contract with Mash, understanding she is Illya’s ally. Mini Cú retreats as Helena tells him to tell Medb that Illya has two jewels.[7]

Sapphire plays a message from Miyu. Miyu reveals she is imprisoned in the First Lady’s castle inside the black wall, which only the First Lady’s familiars can pass through. Not even Medb, who had attacked her and Illya, could penetrate it. Mash now understands Medb was eyeing Miyu from the beginning as well.[7]

Miyu believes the First Lady is why she and Illya were lured into this world, having seemingly found technology to interfere with parallel universes. She doubts it is for peaceful purposes and suspects it’s related to her captivity. She then ends the message warning Illya not to come.[7]

Illya is now extremely depressed, but Sapphire reassures her that Miyu is waiting for her. She regrets having to leave Miyu when she should be with her at all times. She thanks the Chaldeans for protecting Illya and pleads for them to save Miyu.[7]

Ruby notes Miyu’s transformation never lifted even though Sapphire is away from her. This leads her to conclude that the First Lady has special powers over magical girls. It makes her worry for Miyu.[7]

But Illya asks Sapphire why Miyu would say she shouldn’t come. Sapphire believes it is because Miyu knows something about the First Lady’s true identity. Helena recalls when Ritsuka asks about it that the First Lady is said to be the first magical girl. Similar to how Gilgamesh originates the existence of many heroes throughout history, she was the first to define the concept of “magical girl”.[7]

Ruby realizes by that logic every other magical girl is just an imitation that had been continuously copied, meaning they’ll be at a great disadvantage in terms of magecraft. Mash questions, though, if that is the real reason Miyu wanted Illya to stay away.[7]

Arriving at Medb’s castle, Helena decides to stay behind. Medb is expecting the heroes, and it’s either defeat or be defeated for her. Helena simply does not want to see any more magical girls. She gives Illya her jewel, telling her to return it if she doesn’t need it before the heroes go into Medb’s castle.[7]

Inside the throne room, the heroes confront Medb. She confesses she saw a glimpse of Chaldea’s world through the familiar she sent, but she found it dreadfully boring. So she demands the Chaldeans forget it and join her instead, wondering if they’re stupid as well and want to die drunk on their own self-satisfaction.[7]

Mash, offended by Medb’s words, declares Chaldea’s Order isn’t for their own self-satisfaction. Medb calls Chaldea arrogant for thinking they can save the world by themselves, asserting they only want an excuse to say they tried to fight back when they never really ruled their own fate. In the end, though, Illya is the only one present she wants.[7]

However, failing to trick Illya into believing Ritsuka and Mash are secretly plotting to conquer her world, Medb offers to help Illya save Miyu. But in exchange she wants the two of them to join her, saying they’ll enslave Ritsuka and Mash. Mini Cú disagrees and recommends killing them instead, but Medb refuses.[7]

But Illya asks Medb if she is not just obeying the First Lady. Surprised how Illya knew that, Medb admits she did serve the First Lady and reveals the latter is unable to leave the castle nor the Reality Marble. But she took her wish for herself and granted it early, resulting in the loss of many magical girls.[7]

Illya calls Medb insane for essentially imitating the First Lady. Medb sees she’ll have to take Illya by force, wanting to steal her for herself before the First Lady does. But Ritsuka tells Medb she isn’t crazy, rather they believe, like Helena, that she is fighting against despair. Ilya is shocked Ritsuka would forgive such a selfish person, even though her attack on her and Miyu allowed Miyu to be captured and is trying to invade Chaldea.[7]

Medb becomes upset even more so when Ritsuka says the First Lady is at fault, not Medb. Mini Cú tries to kill Ritsuka with his Noble Phantasm for upsetting Medb, but Mash and Illya block it. Then, reinvigorated by Mini Cú, Medb fights the heroes.[7]

She loses and is told by Mini Cú that her sympathy for the fate of her fellow magical girls is why she lost. She denies she cares about other magical girls while at the same time confessing she made her army for those magical girls who had nowhere to go. Illya is shocked and realizes while Medb never said it out loud, she saw the other magical girls who disappeared as comrades.[7]

Illya’s words break Medb’s heart, triggering her castle to collapse. Medb accepts her fate and encourages Ritsuka to go and save their world. Illya and Ritsuka plead with her to come with them, certain Helena can heal her. But Mini Mini Cú reveals she can’t as she is now suffering backlash from having forcibly interfered with other worlds. Saving her now would be an insult to her pride, so Mini Cú tells the heroes to just escape. The heroes escape with Ritsuka giving Medb a final apology.[7]

After the heroes are gone, Mini Cú asks the dying Medb what the happiest thing in the world is to her. Medb answers she already has it, saying the greatest happiness a woman can have is being the next to one she loves when she dies. Mini Cú didn’t catch didn’t that and asks her what she said, but Medb is already dead, leaving Mini Cú to amusedly comment she won in the end.[7]

Outside the now collapsed castle, Medb’s jewel suddenly appears in Mash’s hand. Helena recognizes Medb has now become an Echo, so she’ll expect to see her in her library someday, though she never knew her to like books.[7]

Illya returns Helena’s jewel to her. Helena tells her Medb was more than willing to kill her, so there’s no need to pity her. Furthermore, Medb had entrusted her jewel to Mash, not Illya.[7]

With all four jewels now in their possession, the heroes can finally bypass the black walls. The jewels then suddenly glow even brighter.[7]

The Land of Stars and Crystals[]

Returning to the Neutral Zone, the heroes watch the black wall disappear. Illya, Ruby, and Sapphire fly up to get an overview of the First Lady’s kingdom. Sapphire senses the First Lady’s castle feels different from when she escaped. Illya and Sapphire then see something approaching.[1]

Back on the ground, Helena feels all the Reality Marble’s magical energy is gathering to the First Lady. She wonders if the First Lady found a vessel capable of containing that much magical energy.[1]

Then, right on schedule, Romani reestablishes contact with Ritsuka and Mash. He informs them following a meeting with Da Vinci that it has been decided that the Reality Marble is too dangerous to ignore and he personally wants to help Illya. Ritsuka and Mash will thus will get Chaldea’s full support.[1]

Da Vinci calls the Reality Marble a dumping ground for failed Magical Girls. Magical girls are themselves extremely unstable beings, possessing overwhelming magical energy and able to use magecraft sometimes intuitively and without rituals. But those failed magical girls who gave into despair, their obsession became a flow of unformed magical energy. This flow eventually became a stagnant pool, with the First Lady becoming its locus and the Reality Marble forming mostly on its own. The heroes conclude everything will return to normal if the First Lady disappears.[1]

Illya and the others return and warn the First Lady’s familiars approaching, so much to darken the sky. The heroes proceed to fight them off.[1]

Land of Stars and Crystals

The First Lady's kingdom

While fighting, Mash mentions how Romani and Da Vinci can talk to her and Ritsuka anymore. A leyline is established each they communicate or rayshift to the Reality Marble. As such, Romani and Da Vinci have cut off all normal communications until the return request home. But the risk of hacking still remains and Chaldea is delicate, so they have to avoid any more attacks. The heroes eventually breakthrough and enter the First Lady’s kingdom.[1]

As they get closer to the First Lady’s castle, Helena notices the familiars are changing and becoming stronger. Mash attributes this to the First Lady reacting to their presence to prevent their approach.[1]

Ruby wonders why the First Lady has been behind the black wall this entire time. Ritsuka thinks it’s because she is in a hurry to try something. Helena guesses it has something to do with the jewels.[1]

Mash realizes Helena means it was the First Lady, not the power of the jewels, that deactivated the black wall. She wonders if that means the First Lady has been intentionally making the magical girls fight each other from her kingdom. Helena feels it’s contradictory, as if there are two wills warring against each other. But either way, they’ll have to ask the First Lady herself to know her true motive.[1]

An overwhelming number of enemies then ambush the heroes. While fighting, Helena confesses to Illya that she was wrong about her and has realized again the power she wields. In recognition of that, she changes into third Ascension and wipes out the enemy. She implores the others to go on without her, deciding she’ll hold off the enemy while the others proceed to the First Lady.[1]

After the others are gone, she realizes she forgot to tell them they need the jewels to return to their original world. She won’t give them her jewel, but she is confident they can return home as long as Illya and Miyu have two jewels. She realizes now, like Medb accidentally did, the true power of the jewels. At that moment, Mini Edison appears to fight along inside her.[1]

First Lady Throne Room

The First Lady's throne room

Arriving in the First Lady’s throne room, the heroes see a girl on the throne: Chloe. Illya assumes Chloe came to rescue Miyu. But Chloe reveals much to Illya’s confusion that she and Miyu have been in the Reality Marble for a long time, but she’s been in it since the beginning.[1]

The heroes find Miyu restrained by lace ribbons. Mash tries to check her condition only for parts of her restraints to turn into hostile familiars. Chloe explains it is a defensive reaction of the Voile de Deuil, an Anti-Magical Girl Mystic Code.[1]

Illya demands Chloe release Miyu immediately. Chloe wonders what she should do, as she went through all the trouble to make Miyu hers. It always annoyed her how Illya monopolized her.[1]

She reveals she had actually secretly followed Illya and Miyu when they went to the Mirror World. Flustered that they never noticed her, she accidentally jumped into the Reality Marble. All alone, she hid her presence from the magical girls who were warring with each other, not knowing who to trust. But hiding her presence depleted her magical energy to the point she nearly disappeared. That was when she met the First Lady through her familiar.[1]

Ritsuka tries to introduce themselves and Mash, but Chloe already knows who they are and their circumstance through Illya’s senses. She didn’t join them though because she thought Rin and Luvia would come to the rescue. But she knows her appearance in the Reality Marble was inevitability as the First Lady turned her against Illya by calling her an accessory to Illya. Illya denies that, but Chloe projects a weapon in response and fights her.[1]

Their shared pain puts Chloe at a disadvantage when she reveals she is the First Lady’s vessel. The First Lady then possesses her, having waited until after her duel with Illya as promised.[1]

She explains she is a demon raised in the human world. She fought for the people whilst hiding her identity, but because of that, she lost her homeland and was forgotten by both humans and her fellow demons. There is no one left who even knows her name, but she never hated anyone for it, nor did she fall into despair.[1]

Right now, her only desire is to spread the magical girls of love and hope throughout the world. It was those feelings of hers that attracted Echoes to the Reality Marble. Regrettably, though, she forced the magical girls to kill one another, as this world cannot fit all of them. So they need another world and she will not let the heroes interfere.[1]

She is also an Echo herself, having needed an invisible presence to form and sustain the Reality Marble. Despite giving the Echoes temporary bodies and magical energy to create their kingdoms, they couldn’t grant her wish as she needed a real Magical Girl. That is when she met Chloe and made her into her vessel.[1]

With Miyu’s power, she believes she can incarnate the Echoes into magical girls in the real world and spread them across parallel worlds to save people, dubbing it Prisma Codes. Illya realizes the First Lady’s obsession makes her worse than Medb.[1]

Refusing any interference with her plan, the First Lady declares she will soon absorb Miyu and Chloe, who resists assimilation with her even now. Illya sees the First Lady truly believes in magical girls, but she knows no wish is worth sacrificing Miyu and Chloe. Ritsuka agrees, asserting a selfish wish like that will never come true.[1]

The First Lady questions if the heroes reject her wish because she is an Echo unable to resonate with anyone’s heart and asks if they will forget her as well. Ritsuka says they have no intention of consoling her. Illya refuses to go that far, unable to repudiate her as she is her senior as a magical girl. But that is even more reason she cannot overlook what she is doing, believing she is making a mistake. The First Lady recalls Chloe told her the same thing.[1]

Illya tells her that her wish would become a curse, saying magical girls are always getting involved in half-baked outrageous trouble. Even so, thanks to that, she got to meet Miyu, gained a little sister in Chloe, and became dear friends with Ruby, Sapphire, Rin, and Luvia despite her initial reservations. The First Lady says she had friends too, but the world abandoned her.[1]

She suspects Ritsuka is the type who wants to be forgotten and believes they want to run from their duty to save the world. She doubts Mash’s connection with Ritsuka will last forever and asks her if she would cling onto the hope she could be with Ritsuka forever.[1]

But Mash doesn’t call that hope and recognizes the First Lady is very hurt from having no one to heal or protect her. She respects her for fighting against destiny all this time, but she doesn’t pity her. She considers it a miracle they met and promises to never forget her, even if she forgets her. The First Lady thinks Mash is lying.[1]

Miyu implores Illya to help the First Lady and Chloe, saying the former has an impossible wish in her heart and is crying on the inside. She also mentions being with Chloe all this time has been awkward. Her comment irritates Chloe so much she takes back control of her body. It doesn’t last long, unfortunately, as her anger toward Miyu allows the First Lady to retake control.[1]

The First Lady reveals her and Chloe’s desire for Miyu has allowed her to break through the latter’s mental wall and fully control her body. She proclaims once Miyu is emotionally broken from seeing the heroes defeated before, she will use to reach infinite worlds. The heroes fight the First Lady to save her from herself.[1]

With the First Lady defeated, Chloe slowly regains control of her body, and Miyu is freed. The First Lady tells Illya she won’t win if she doesn’t finish her off, for she will never give up. Illya and Miyu both tell her it isn’t about winning or losing.[1]

Miyu knows what the First Lady is doing is actually about atonement, but the latter just can’t accept what she has differs from Illya’s pure feelings. She implores Illya to tell the First Lady how she feels and to do so honestly, so it will reach her heart.[1]

Ilya confesses to the First Lady that she had forced herself to think that saving the world had nothing to do with her. If she were in her place, she wouldn’t know what to do or who to choose. But if her friends and family were in danger, she wouldn’t hesitate to use her magic. She would use it to protect everyone’s smiles, even if it meant she herself had to cry.[1]

The First Lady feels as if she is looking at her old self and laments the fact she had to sacrifice her best friend. Her friend had refused to become a magical girl and became an enemy of the world, so she had to stop her. She bemoans she will never see her again and regrets she can never apologize to her. At that moment, Helena and Mini Edison enter the throne room.[1]

The Windflower Blooming in the Breeze[]

Helena explains the First Lady’s familiars ceased to be a threat once the heroes began their battle with her. She had a difficult time reaching the throne room because the castle’s barriers are too strong and “she” can’t get in. She then takes everyone outside.[2]

There they find the passive Echo from before, who Helena saw heading for the castle after the wall fell. She seems to be upset at the First Lady and looks like she has something to say something to her. Ruby has her possess Illya.[2]

The possessed Illya immediately smacks Chloe/the First Lady, calling her a dummy. Miyu thinks the girl possessing Illya might be the girl from her dream. The First Lady realizes from her speech that the girl is Mila, surprised she is an Echo. Mila affirms she was still a magical girl, even if it was for only a brief time.[2]

Miyu concludes Mila is the girl from her dream and asks her if she is the First Lady’s friend. Mila confirms she is—a former magical girl who was slain by the First Lady. Ruby realizes that means Mila is the first corrupted magical girl.[2]

Mila tells the First Lady she gave everything to make everyone happy. But the harder she worked, the less people smiled and their greed and dissatisfaction wore her down until she was crying even as she smiled. Mila didn’t think the world was worth saving, so she chose the First Lady over it.[2]

The First Lady is ashamed she never noticed her friend was here the whole time. Mila reveals without borrowing Illya’s body, she cannot maintain her consciousness. But she always felt the First Lady’s presence because the Reality Marble is a manifestation of her regrets. That is why she always wished to go beyond the black wall, so she could bring her peace.[2]

Helena realizes Mila was the one who opened a leyline outside the Reality Marble and it was her wish that summoned Chloe to this world. Mila was unaware of that, however.[2]

Mash asks what caused her sleepwalking at Chaldea. The First Lady reveals that was Medb’s doing, who used her vast magical energy to open a leyline. She only tried to use that opened leyline.[2]

She starts to disappear, triggering her Reality Marble’s collapse, starting from the lands furthest from her castle. Fortunately, Helena convinces her to give her ownership of the Reality Marble so it can serve as a refuge for wounded Magical Girls to stop them from becoming like her.[2]

About to disappear as well, Mila tells the First Lady that she feels betrayed at being abandoned and forgotten by the world. But magical girls aren’t selfish and use their magic for people they will never know. Otherwise, their impossible wishes become curses as their emotions get trapped in the gap between worlds and become purgatory.[2]

Mila tells the First Lady it is time for her to stop. She admits new threats will always appear, but that is why new magical girls like Illya are born, even if they are incomplete and not totally reliable. The First Lady accepts the future lies with them and disappears with Mila, leaving their hosts holding hands.[2]

With the First Lady and Mila gone, a new jewel—the First Lady’s— manifests in Helena’s hand. She basically explains, which Illya catches, that they need to use the jewels for someone else’s sake, otherwise nothing will change. Ruby senses magical energy flowing through them equally, so now everyone can go home. Chloe presumes they each take a jewel, face each other, and wish to go home.[2]

Helena reconfirms she will take the First Lady’s place and serve as host for the magical girls who come to the Reality Marble. Mini Edison is certain she can do it because he knows when she works at something, she commits her life to it. But this world is unstable and will probably fall apart eventually. Helena accepts that eventuality, saying she’ll go to another world when it happens.[2]

Illya thanks Ritsuka and Mash for helping her and friends, even though they have more important matters than she does. She can also tell even though they’re smiling that Ritsuka is suffering more than anyone, but they still help others. She believes only someone like that can save the world.[2]

Chloe apologizes to Ritsuka and Mash for the trouble she caused and tells them not to stress out too much. Miyu expresses her gratitude toward Ritsuka, impressed by what strong will they must have to save the world.[2]

Then, with the power of the jewels, Illya and her friends return to their world while Ritsuka and Mash are rayshifted back to Chaldea.[2]

Romani reports to Ritsuka and Mash that the leyline between the Reality Marble and Chaldea has dissipated completely, so now there is no way to know what is happening there. It can also be assumed the danger of interference from a parallel world is gone. However, to everyone’s surprise, Chloe has inexplicably appeared in Chaldea and is now one of Ritsuka’s Servants.[2]

Magical Gentlemen - The Encounter[]

Later, Ritsuka, Mash, and Chloe are suddenly summoned back into the Reality Marble. Blackbeard and the Phantom of the Opera then appear before them, wearing miniskirts on their regular outfits. Unable to become Magical Girls in reality, they found a way into the Reality Marble, and formed the Magical Gentlemen with two other Servants. The group notice the Reality Marble has changed since the last time, with its spatial connections and enemies being different. Helena also isn’t around despite becoming the Reality Marble’s new owner. Although considering Blackbeard and Phantom’s desire to be with Magical Girls harmless, Chloe nonetheless attacks them for turning her first mission into a farce. She misses however, even with Caladbolg III, forcing the pair to retreat. The group decide they need to defeat the Magical Gentlemen.[9]

White Masked Gentleman - The Destiny[]

Encountering the Phantom in Land of Sweets, Mash believes him to be harmless. Chloe, however, asks him what he’d do with a bird that it stopped singing, as he used songbirds as an analogy for girls earlier. The Phantom answers he would kill it, so the group defeat him.[10]

Blackbeard Gentleman - The Treachery[]

Next, the group defeat Blackbeard in the Land of Dragons and Sea.[11]

Bluebeard Gentleman - The Memories[]

Later, they defeat Gilles de Rais in the Land of Dead Bookshelves.[12]

Jade Gentleman - The Blood Tears[]

Next, they defeat Diarmuid Ua Duibhne in the Land of Snow and Honey.[13]

With the Magical Gentlemen defeated, the group return to the Neutral Zone and prepares to return to Chaldea. However, some occurrence throughout the Reality Marble prompts them to go into the Land of Crystals and Stars, the former kingdom of the First Lady.[13]

Witness the Transformation[]

Inside the castle, they witness a girl form from the shadows. The girl names herself Testament, and she looks exactly like Illya. She was created from the wishes of the Magical Gentlemen, the crystallization of their obsessive desire for a pure and ideal Magical Girl. However, Testament shows herself to be absolutely impure with the desire to spread despair. After the group defeats her, Testament reveals they were summoned into the Reality Marble to serve as spectators and her enemies. After she disappears, the Reality Marble is returned to normal, and the group return to Chaldea.[14]
