The Chinese Lostbelt (中国異聞帯, Chūgoku ibuntai?), designated Order Lostbelt No. 3 (ロストベルト No. 3?), is one of the seven Lostbelts appearing on the blankened Earth during the Human Order Revision incident. Originating in 210 BC China, its Lost Depth is E, its Proper Human History Resemblance is A, its King is Qin Shi Huang, and its associated Crypter is Hinako Akuta.[1][2] It is the third of the Lostbelts visited by Chaldea Security Organization in the undertaking of the Grand Order to restore Earth and the Human Order.
The events of Chaldea's visit to this Lostbelt are covered in the third chapter of Cosmos in the Lostbelt; SIN: Synchronized Intellect Nation (人智統合真国 シン, Jinchi tōgō makuni Shin?), alternatively The Crimson Beauty Under the Moon (紅の月下美人, Aka no gekka bijin?).[1]

The Lostbelt diverged from the Proper Human History in 210 BC, during the end of the reign of Qin Shi Huang. Qin Shi Huang, during his search for an elixir of life, discovered the artificial body of Nezha, which he used to develop technology that allowed him to continue existing in an artificial form. This method allowed Qin Shi Huang to continue ruling China forever. Due to his “immortality” and technological equipment, he eventually managed to conquer the whole world after years of wars, dubbing this new empire as the Eternal Sin Empire.[3]
After his conquest was completed, Qin Shi Huang created a planetary defense system that surrounded the whole Earth, called the “Great Wall”, which allowed him to monitor everything in the world. Despite the advanced technology in his control, the common folk were kept uneducated, with no access to this technology. Thus, the society of the empire remains at a basic farming level. However, the people live in complete peace, with no conflicts occurring over hundreds of years. Qin Shi Huang also artificially “froze” many of the greatest warriors that emerged over the years, so that their talents could be used at a later date. This includes Xiang Yu, Qin Liangyu and Han Xin.
The E-Rank Lost Depth is very low due to humanity not being in any danger. The main divergence is due to technology stagnation amongst everyone other then Emperor Qin.
History[]
Prologue[]
David Bluebook continues his journey for answers, having left the colony of survivors he was accompanying. On his solar-powered motorcycle, he has driven from Australia to North America. He soon comes across remnants of buildings and, sitting on what was once a sofa, he recalls the year Earth fell to invaders.[4]
On New Year’s Eve, every satellite around the world was lost in an instant and by consequence, cosmic rays became undetectable. The Fantasy Tree’s branches had covered the planet in a dome and the world was turned blank. Twelve hours later, the Trees descended on the Earth and killed nearly every human over the course of three months. Afterward, they returned to the sky. Those killed by their branches turned into dust upon their deaths. Those who survived, like David, only did because they hid in underground facilities.[4]
David decides to rest for today and continue his journey tomorrow. He suspects he will reach his destination soon. It was the last place recorded by satellites and the only one not wiped clean. An area in Southern Nevada———Area 51.[4]
Wandering Sea docks
Sion Eltnam Sokaris invites the Chaldeans to come into the Wandering Sea. They aren’t so certain, though, so Ritsuka, Mash, and Leonardo da Vinci volunteer to check it out. They meet Sion, who jokes about collecting damages for the usage of her creations, TRISMEGISTUS and the Paper Moon, without her express permission to serve as an icebreaker.[4]
She welcomes them to the Wandering Sea, already knowing who they all are and what happened to Chaldea at the start of 2017. She is perplexed by who Chaldea’s director is now as her information about it being Da Vinci is out of date. Goredolf Musik enters with Sherlock Holmes and introduces himself to be Chaldea’s new director.[4]
Holmes introduces himself to Sion and surprises her by already knowing who she is. He tries to pass it off as deductive reasoning until Ritsuka calls him out for merely quoting Sion’s file from when he touched Tri-Hermes. Sion is impressed he didn’t lose his mind.[4]
A boy appears ready to fix the Shadow Border like Sion requested, so he needs everyone off it. Goredolf realizes the boy is a Servant, surprised the Wandering Sea is also capable of summoning Servants. Sion confesses she made a modified version of Chaldea’s system and summoned the boy to be her assistant. She calls him Captain and confirms a Phantom Spirit was used to make up his Spirit Origin. She then gives the Chaldeans a tour, starting with the Command Room.[4]
Ritsuka and Mash are surprised by how much it looks like Chaldea’s command room, though Sion says this one is the original. She spent the last three months making it since she came to the Wandering Sea. She calls it TRISMEGISTUS II, a perfect reproduction of the TRIMEGISTUS she lent to Chaldea.[4]
She reveals she proposed Paper Moon-based Zero Sails as a means of sending people into Singularities. But Marisbury Animusphere proposed a more reliable method———Rayshifting. By sharing his most secret arts with Atlas, he had willingly risked the destruction of his family by the other Lords. Atlas, out of respect, agreed to provide Chaldea with TRIMEGITSUS, thus enabling the completion of Chaldeas.[4]
Holmes asks how she survived the reset of the world, and why she was waiting for Chaldea. Sion answers the first question by revealing it was thanks to her being in the Wandering Sea, which always drifts between the world’s Textures and therefore impervious to the reset.[4]
As for the second question, she had predicted the world would cease to be in 2017. She told her father about it, but he found it trivial as he sees humanity’s end every day and told her to solve it herself since she discovered it. Sion, seeing that everyone was too busy dealing with their own end of the world predictions, left Atlas for the Wandering Sea and secured it as a safe haven for her and the Chaldeans. She knew the enemy would attack their base, but she also knew they would survive and fight back. It was for that reason she made a second Chaldea for them.[4]
At the Crypters meeting, Koyanskaya reports the loss of the Scandinavian Lostbelt and Ophelia Phamrsolone. Hinako Akuta calls her out for a fake mourning and expresses general disgust for her. She gets infuriated, though, when Koyanskaya points out she ignored Ophelia’s issues, but Scandinavia Peperoncino intervenes. He sees their hashing it out as a sort of funeral for Ophelia. Hinako has no words of condolences for Ophelia and only came to report on her Lostbelt. She leaves, requesting Koyanskaya not to be sent to her Lostbelt, even by accident.[4]
Beryl Gut asks Kadoc Zemlupus why he is still alive, seeing it was his Servant who destroyed Chaldea, so they should hate him more than any other Crypter. But seeing he is unharmed, Beryl can’t help but wonder if Kadoc defected to Chaldea. Kadoc denies it as he’d still be in the Border if it were true. He is merely a loser who escaped death through sheer dumb luck. Beryl jokes about it, claiming he only cares Kadoc is still alive.[4]
It baffles him, though, how a third-rate amateur like Ritsuka is still alive. Peperoncino reminds him they have the perfect defense thanks to Mash’s protection. Beryl envies Ritsuka for being able to play the hero while hiding behind a girl like Mash.[4]
Kirschtaria Wodime asks Daybit Sem Void for his thoughts on Ritsuka, but their success too baffles Daybit. Kadoc considers Ritsuka a joke for needing to rely on Mystic Codes to convert his life energy into a magical energy for his Servants, which requires them to be as close as possible. Ritsuka is incapable of self-defense, needs to command their Servant from the frontlines, and is trying their best not to piss themselves the whole time.[4]
Koyanskaya reconfirms Ophelia willingly gave her life to stop Surtr with her Sirius Light, abandoning her responsibilities as a Crypter. Kirschtaria is disappointed that Ophelia couldn’t even take control of the Scandinavian Lostbelt, peaceful as it was. He also confirms he had Ophelia keep Surt around as insurance in case Scáthach-Skadi sympathized with Chaldea given her nature, but it seems even that was too much for Ophelia. Koyanskaya is delighted by Kirschtaria’s deviousness and agrees not to mention the incident to the Alien God or the other Alter Egos.[4]
Daybit recalls Koyanskaya said she lost track of Chaldea around the North Sea, though he discounts the possibility they Zero Sailed given their lack of resources. He and Kirschtaria thus conclude they reached the Wandering Sea, the one place the Alien God couldn’t touch. Not even Koyanskaya, with her ability to travel between Lostbelts, can enter it without knowing its exact location.[4]
As that is the case, Peperoncino suggests forgetting Chaldea for now and focus on their duties. Beryl, however, finds they can no longer ignore Chaldea and recommends crushing them. He thinks Koyanskaya should do it as part of her job as one of the Alien God’s apostles.[4]
Since Grigori Rasputin’s team is currently battling Proper Human History Servant in the Grecian seas and that creepy omnyouji refuses to budge from India, Koyanskaya agrees to take the job even though it isn’t in her contract. She will do so by assassinating their only Master.[4]
After Koyanskaya warps away, the Crypters leave the meeting one by one. Kirschtaria sees the loss of the Scandinavian Lostbelt as only a minor setback, though no longer having Surtr as a fail-safe is a strategic loss. He realizes Ophelia saw him as a great figure and so he will strive to live up to that and create a new Proper Human History.[4]
Two weeks later, Sion and Captain have completed their recreation of Chaldea. However, it seems Captain forgot to make Goredolf his office, having not realized he was the director. He leaves the Command Room to presumably build Goredolf’s office.[4]
Sion reviews what the Chaldeans have been up to thus far from the Border’s logs. Ritsuka and Mash remember, however, they found a survivor’s journal in one of the remnant buildings. Sion takes it from Ritsuka and while he has no issue with its contents, she finds it strange it was recorded on paper. Goredolf finds that perfectly normal given there is no electricity. Sion thinks to herself that is why she finds it strange the letters weren’t written in ink or pencil, almost as if they were burned into paper or something similar. She decides to leave it be for now until more information is available.[4]
On the subject of Lostbelts, Sion explains a Lostbelt’s strength isn’t based on its age but on how it differs from Proper Human History. Given what they know about the Russian and Scandinavian Lostbelts, she has come up with a metric by which to measure and compare Lostbelts. She calls it Lost Depth, and the greater it is, the more Proper Human History is refuted. She has already assigned preliminary Lost Depth rankings for all seven Lostbelts.[4]
Pulling out a map, Sion shows there are three Lostbelts in Europe, two in Asia, one in South America, and one in the Atlantic. The Atlantic Lostbelt is the only place on Earth with an ocean from before the bleaching, not counting the Wandering Sea. Sion identifies it as the one whose Fantasy Tree branches are spreading throughout Earth’s atmosphere. She suspects it is also Kirschtaria’s home base.[4]
Da Vinci suspects what the Lostbelt’s civilization could be. Holmes finds things will be difficult if her thinking is correct, as they have no means of reaching it with the Border incapable of long sea voyages. Furthermore, the Lostbelt’s civilization would have existed since prehistoric times… a robust, stable world that will have had 12000 years to develop.
Goredolf orders they ignore the other Lostbelts and focus solely on reaching the Atlantic Lostbelt, their greatest immediate threat. Sion concurs as, unlike Russia and Scandinavia, the Chinese and Indian Lostbelts’ storm walls aren’t expanding, so there is no immediate danger from them. As for the British and South American Lostbelts, TRISMEGISTUS has calculated they will self-destruct on their own. Sion even suspects humanity in the British Lostbelt will be extinct in a matter of months, though she is curious why it is the only Lostbelt that is surrounded by a wall of light. As for the South American Lostbelt, she can only conclude its civilization is about dead and gone.[4]
Since making the Border sea-worthy will take at least a month, Sion invites the Chaldeans to relax in the meantime, particularly Ritsuka and Goredolf. Goredolf goes off to take a hot shower. Ritsuka and Mash, meanwhile, go off to check out their new rooms.[4]
Sion requests Da Vinci’s permission to tinker with the Ortenaus’ bunker bolt mechanism. She would like to add something to it before they reach the Atlantic, a Conceptual Weapon she was working on related to one’s longevity.[4]
That night, Ritsuka is having trouble sleeping, so they go to the cafeteria for a snack. Meanwhile, at the dock, Goredolf is upset his office isn’t done yet and was told by Captain to use a sleeping bag at the dock until it’s done. He decides to have a midnight snack.
Ritsuka finds Goredolf in the cafeteria eating a cake. Goredolf offers them the other half of the cake, which they take him up on. Goredolf admits, though, that the cake had a note that read “For Ritsuka” and assumed the others baked for a Master welcome party tomorrow. He took a taste of it, but before he knew it, he already eaten half of it. He becomes worried, however, when Ritsuka confesses they didn’t know about the cake. They then both notice they’re looking pale.[4]
The intruder alarm goes off. Captain arrives in the nick of time to protect Ritsuka and Goredolf from Koyanskaya’s surprise attack. Goredolf is so shocked to see her in the Wandering Sea that he blurts out her full name: Tamamo Vitch Koyanskaya.[4]
Koyanskaya reveals the cake was poisoned, though half a portion means half the potency. She baked the cake so the poison would be undetectable. She notices the others coming so she warps away. Captain takes Ritsuka and Goredolf to the infirmary.[4]
Half a day later, following Ritsuka and Goredolf’s treatment, the Chaldeans gather in the Command Room. Holmes says Goredolf has at best ten days to live. Ritsuka meanwhile is essentially fine thanks to the poison resistance through their contract with Mash.[4]
Holmes unfortunately reveals the base sequence for Koyanskaya’s poison no longer exists on Earth in 2017, making an antidote impossible. Sion explains it was derived from a plant called Xian Shuai Ming Mai or “Immortal Decline”, a name most likely of Taoist origin.[4]
Given its Taoist origins, Da Vinci surmises the plant came from China. But while it is gone from the modern era, she is certain they find it in the Chinese Lostbelt. She even resummoned Nezha from the Spirit Origin graph to serve as a guide. Goredolf orders everyone to prepare to go to the Chinese Lostbelt.[4]
Before that, however, Da Vinci wants to know how Koyanskaya could warp into the Wandering Sea as it should be impossible given its nature. Holmes deduces she must have used an anchor, and since she has no prior connection to the Wandering Sea, the only possibility is that one of them possesses something connected to her. Goredolf realizes it’s the lipstick Koyanskaya gave long ago and promptly destroys it.[4]
With that and all traces of Koyanskaya taken care of, the Chaldeans depart for the Chinese Lostbelt via Zero Zail.[4]
The Third Lostbelt[]
A woman speaks with a man who is about to drink poison so he may no longer displease the emperor. She cannot understand why he must kill himself and offers to kill those who forced this loyalty upon him. The man feels honored she would be angry on his behalf, but he believes this is a fitting end for Gao Changgong. She admits she could never understand the way he speaks of life and death, being that death is beyond her. He regrets she will never attain peace in death. His last wish is to see her again someday after death, a wish she also wants to come true. He then drinks from his chalice.[5]
The Chaldeans arrive in the Lostbelt in a farmland where the city of Shinyan would be in Proper Human History. They locate a nearby leyline and get ready to establish the summoning circle. They find it strange, though, how peaceful and primitive the civilization seems to be compared to the previous Lostbelts.[5]
Farmers approach them, upset the Chaldeans for ruining their field with their vehicle. They run off to get their supervisor, though, when the boy with them identifies the Chaldeans as foreigners based on their strange clothing. They come back with their supervisor and become hostile, forcing the heroes to pacify them without harm.[5]
After the farmers retreat, the heroes return to the Border. Da Vinci establishes the summoning circle, though the summoning will take time. In the meantime, Holmes recommends negotiating with the vllagers. Da Vinci agrees to explain the things to the farmers when everyone realizes her innocent looks could be useful in negotiating. A peaceful resolution is soon met thanks to Da Vinci talking with the men and Holmes with the women.[5]
Later, Da Vinci reveals there was no response from the Lostbelt’s Throne of Heroes when she connected to it with the leyline. As such, she switched to using the Spirit Origin graph, so now they all need to wait for a Heroic Spirit to answer their summons. She doubts one will come, however, as their definition of a Heroic Spirit may differ from the Lostbelt’s.[5]
Sunrise, Ritsuka and Mash talk about how peaceful it is when they notice a streak in the sky. Mash presumes it is normal in the Lostbelt, given that the locals aren’t taking notice of it. Da Vinci and Holmes, meanwhile, try to get information from the villagers, only learning the barest minimum about their emperor.[5]
Suddenly. the village is attacked by Kritchat from the Russian Lostbelt to the Chaldeans’ astonishment. After slaying them, they determine the Lostbelt’s Tree is hidden like Sombrero was. They also surmise Koyanskaya is the one who brought the Kritchat over from the Russian Lostbelt.[5]
Da Vinci shows surveillance footage from a drone she sent towards the capital. It is of a highly advanced metropolis and a massive floating construct, demonstrating the Lostbelt’s technology surpasses the Proper Human History. Da Vinci then shows footage of a line in a low orbit that runs along the storm wall. She reveals the capital is the only technologically advanced place in the Lostbelt, as the rest is just farmlands. Its location corresponds with Proper Human History’s Xianyang, a city from the Qin Dynasty.[5]
Elsewhere, Hinako tries to get the Emperor to understand the threat Chaldea represents, but he seems dismissive of Heroic Spirits and considers the Counter Force to be nonsense. Koyanskaya also tries to convince him, claiming Chaldea brought over creatures that threaten the people’s safety. The Emperor leaves it to Hinako to deal with Chaldea since she is so concerned about them, wishing to see what Servants can do.[5]
In another room, Hinako complains to Koyanskaya about her luring Chaldea to the Lostbelt, believing the other Crypters would have been more suited to kill Ritsuka than her. Koyanskaya claims she lured them because she thought Hinako was the most suitable since she’s good at defense. She didn’t botch her plan on purpose, but she knew Holmes and Da Vinci would quickly determine the poison’s origins, which is why she warned Hinako ahead of time. She thinks it makes sense for them to join forces being misanthropic outcasts, which Hinako doesn’t deny.[5]
But she finds that doesn’t explain why Koyanskaya brought over “pets” and questions if she ordered them to kill people. Koyanskaya denies she did, saying the creatures merely trying to survive in an unfamiliar environment. She finds that more endearing than deranged livestock, like this nation’s people. Hinako warns her she’ll be in serious trouble if the Emperor learns she brought over Demonic Beasts from another Lostbelt. Koyanskaya says it’s part of her lifelong project and promises Hinako she will not disrupt her life’s work.[5]
Hinako declares she will not let Chaldea disrupt her Lostbelt and warns Saber not to go easy on them. Saber promises he will not let her down. Even though it’s behind a mask, Koyanskaya can tell Saber has a beautiful face and envies Hinako.[5]
Eternal Empire[]
The heroes suspect Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor of China, is the emperor residing in Xianyang. The Qin Empire was very much ahead of its time and if it remained the sole power in China, it would have grown to where it couls easily conquer its neighbors and speed up humanity’s progress considerably. Shi Huang’s death was the catalyst for its fall, but if he attained the immortality he sought, China would have theoretically skipped all its centuries of strife and gone straight to modernization.[6]
However, this Qin is completely devoid of the societal change that typically accompanies scientific progress. The primitive state of the village is a prime example of this and makes it clear the Emperor has no intention of sharing the benefits of his empire’s progress with his citizens.[6]
Suddenly, an object is launched from Xianyang toward the village. The villagers identify it as a Benefaction, which the Emperor uses to grant gifts. Da Vinci, however, is detecting a Master and Servant inside the container. It soon lands with Akuta and her Servant Saber coming out of it. They fight the heroes, but are soon forced to retreat.[6]
Akuta reports her failure to the Emperor. He still doesn’t see Chaldea as a threat, but he will allow Akuta to continue since her first attempt amused him and will even provide her with ten of his puppets. He calls out her reluctance to fight and tells her to fight only to win. Akuta promises not to fail and ends the calls after the Emperor says he looks forward to a future with more substance.[6]
Koyanskaya thinks the Emperor is punishing Akuta. But the Emperor refutes it, as he sees no sense in it when he does not yet see Chaldea as his enemy. They may come have from another world, but the same is truth of Koyanskaya and Akuta. The Captain of the Guard warns Koyanskaya if Chaldea were to mount an attack, she and Akuta will be suspected of being their advanced guard. Koyaskaya denies this and asserts the Chaldeans have only been troublemakers since they arrived, unlike her and Akuta.[6]
The Chaldeans talk about how Akuta differs from how her profile described her, being a misanthrope rather than an introvert. Mash recalls shortly after Team A was formed, she discovered Akuta actually used her books as a cover to keep close watch on her teammates. Akuta seemed like she was suspicious of everyone, almost as if she was guarding a secret. Holmes agrees to look into it.[6]
Another Benefaction is launched from Xianyang, this one containing reinforcements which obviously cannot be human. Fortunately, Da Vinci just finished summoning Mordred, Spartacus, and Jing Ke, finding it appropriate since they’re up against an empire. Jing Ke is glad she might get another chance to kill Shi Huang.[6]
The reinforcements turn out to be automatons, and with their aid, Akuta and Saber try again to kill the heroes. Yet despite using his Noble Phantasm (his mask) to boost his leadership capabilities, Saber is still unable to defeat the heroes. Holmes deduces his True Name is Prince of Lanling a.k.a. Gao Changgong. Akuta and Lanling retreat to re-strategize. Nezha joins Holmes in examining the automaton remains, suspecting something about them.[6]
The Emperor tells Akuta she need not bother with a third attempt, as it’s clear her Servant is no match for Chaldea alone. He is now convinced Servants are formidable and so realizes sending more automatons will not make a difference. He therefore decides to lend Xiang Yu to Akuta, which delights her. However, as it will take time to deploy him, the Emperor orders Akuta to keep an eye on the Chaldean so they do not take further action against his empire.[6]
Koyanskaya surmises the Emperor is testing Akuta. The Emperor admits it and now understands the threat the Chaldeans pose. However, he has yet to see how Akuta will behave when she believes she has the means to defeat the Chaldeans. Koyanskaya realizes the Emperor still doesn’t trust her or Akuta. She finds it difficult to read someone when she can’t see their face.[6]
The Emperor admits he underestimated Servants. But he dislikes the idea of summoning dead heroes——Heroic Spirits——to defend the world against an existensial threat, perplexed that Koyanskaya’s world is so perilous to permit it. Koyanskaya doubts the Counter Force would ever manifest in the Lostbelt.[6]
Given the potential threat Chaldea and their Servants pose, the Captain of the Guard suggests awakening the heroes sleeping in Mt. Li. The Emperor agrees precautionary measures should be made and orders the frozen heroes to be awakened.[6]
Aberrant Shadow[]
Based on the villagers’ reactions to the automatons, Holmes concludes they are ignorant of war to the point they do not know weaponry. But before he can say more on the matter, he is interrupted by the arrival of Jotunn from the Scandinavian Lostbelt. The heroes proceed to slay the frost giants, with a few fleeing. Mordred suspects they have a nest nearby and recommends finding and destroying it.[7]
The heroes then learn the Lostbelt’s populace has no concept of separate nations, only knowing of rumors that said foreigners were human-looking monsters. This leads to the conclusion that the Qin conquered the world and brought upon a peace so perfect that the people lost all concept of war.[7]
The Captain of the Guard reports to the Emperor he has arrived Mt. Li. The Emperor carefully contemplates which heroes to have released from cryosleep, requiring them to be strong, kind, modest, and extremely loyal. He grants the Captain of the Guard leave to pick which hero to wake up. The one chosen must also be capable of defeating a Heroic Spirit, though not so strong they cannot be defeated themselves should they get out of control.[7]
Demonic Beast of a Strange Land[]
Holmes tries asking the villagers if they know any cold places nearby, explaining the monsters from earlier come from such climates. The villagers, however, reveal they are prohibited by the Emperor from leaving the village. They do not understand the problem with it as everything is provided for them.[8]
In private, a boy tells Ritsuka and Mash he knows of a cold place nearby, being the only one curious enough to explore outside the village. He only went there once, but he recalls it's in a forest close by.[8]
As it may be their only lead to Koyanskaya, Holmes decides they should investigate the nest. The expedition team will consist of himself, Ritsuka, Mash, Jing Ke, and Spartacus. Nezha and Mordred, meanwhile, will stay behind to guard the Border.[8]
The boy leads the expedition team riding on Spartacus' shoulders. He and Spartacus bond, with Spartacus approving of his curious and explorative nature and the boy being inspired to be like Spartacus[8]
The team soon come to a village that had been destroyed by Kritchat. After slaying them, Ritsuka, Mash, and Holmes notice they were weaker than they were in the Russian Lostbelt, yet more coordinated. Holmes attributes their loss of strength to their change in environment and finds it likely someone trained to work together like a military unit. Koyanskaya is mostly responsible, though it raises the question of when she had time. The team continues their expedition.[8]
Following the Kritchat's footprints, the team eventually reaches the monsters' nest, a cave, when they become surrounded by giants. They slay the giants, but find it strange that following Kritchat tracks led them to giants. It makes Holmes curious what they'll find inside.[8]
Inside the cave, the team finds evidence of cohabitation between Kritchat and giants. Someone, most likely Koyanskaya, took the time to domesticate these monsters to share territory. Jing Ke doesn't think there was a goal in mind and believes Koyanskaya merely enjoys tormenting innocents. The team is then beset by monsters that they fight off.[8]
The monsters retreat further into the cave, leading Holmes to conclude someone is definitely controlling them. He doubts it will be Koyanskaya who they will find deeper inside. The team head further in to confront whoever commands the monsters and end the attacks.[8]
Further in, Ortenaus' sensors detect a D'yavol Tron and a fire giant, both of which have an increasingly insane amount of magical energy levels. The team then finds the D'yavol Tron and the fire giant cannibalizing the Kritchat and the other giants respectively. They soon finish eating and attack the team.[8]
The monsters are slain, but Holmes is disappointed there was no conclusive evidence Koyanskaya was responsible. He deduces the monsters were cannibalizing each other for a long time, having gain the ability to absorb their prey's magical energy either by being forced to learn it by environmental change or by Koyanskaya enhancing them. Without evidence, he can only surmise Koyanskaya has her own reasons for traveling between Lostbelts. The team return to the village after Jing Ke harvests the D'yavol Tron’s alcohol gland.[8]
The White Cavalry Heroine, the Best in the Land[]
Jing Ke recites a poem by Li Bai and begins to teach the villagers how to read and write. Spartacus laments their illiteracy and sympathizes with them to the point he declares it cannot be assumed Proper Human History is the only one that deserves to survive. As such, he implores Ritsuka to observe the Lostbelt’s denizens to understand they both resist the collapse of their worlds and see which is fit to inherit humanity’s future. He says the coming battle will determine which it will be and warns he will side with the Lostbelt if he finds true human dignity in it. If that should happen, he would like the villagers to learn of Proper Human History’s poetry and feelings if they are to inherit it.[9]
The Captain of the Guard returns from Mt. Li with two of the empire’s best warriors. First is Qin Liangyu——Commander of the White Cavalry. Second is the strategist and the Emperor’s oldest and most loyal retainer——Han Xin. With them, he is certain the empire’s defenses will be airtight.[9]
The Demonic General Descends[]
Xianyang has launched another Benefaction. Holmes finds it odd that compared to Kadoc and Ophelia, who waited for the opportune moment to strike, Akuta attacked rather quickly. He agrees with Ritsuka that it may be because there is no else to fight given how peaceful the Lostbelt is, so it’s possible there is military force capable of engaging Servants. He believes, however, that this coming battle will tell them much about this world’s military strength.[10]
Mordred destroys the container with Clarent Blood Arthur before it can impact. But a centaurian-like automaton with magical energy equal to a dragon-class Demonic Beast emerges from the wreckage and attacks the heroes.[10]
The heroes struggle against the automaton when Lanling arrives. He demands the automaton explain why he attacked without them calling him Xiang Yu. Xiang Yu answers he needed to evaluate their opponents’ abilities, but with the data he gained from this encounter, they can now devise a strategy. He then returns to camp with Lanling.[10]
At her camp, Akuta reiterates to Xiang Yu what she told him about there being a version of him who remembered as a human man by later generations, something he finds bizarre. She then tries to describe what the world would be like if the Emperor died naturally, but the Emperor interrupts, not wanting to hear it.[10]
Xiang Yu assures the Emperor defeating Chaldea will not be an issue for him. The Emperor believes him, but to be absolutely certain, he orders Akuta’s team to rendezvous with Liangyu’s battalion. Akuta disagrees, believing Xiang Yu makes victory a forgone conclusion and that Chaldea should be eliminated as soon as possible. The Emperor reminds her she retreated twice already, so her tactical insight isn’t welcome. He tells her team to continuing monitor Chaldea until Liangyu arrives.[10]
In the Border, Holmes and Nezha report their findings regarding the automatons. They are all degraded imitations of Nezha, meaning their basis is Xian Arts instead of science. But based on the combat footage she watched, Nezha concludes Xiang Yu is much closer to her. She theorizes he was originally a humanoid based on her design and became as he is now after many modifications.[10]
Based on these findings, Holmes ponders if Shi Huang recovered the lost Xian Arts from Shang Dynasty and gained an understanding of them. If so, scientific progress would have subsequently evolved into something wholly different from Proper Human History. That would explain how Shi Huang gained immortallity and why the Lostbelt’s technology is so unusual.[10]
Meanwhile, outside on standby, Ritsuka and the others discuss Xiang Yu, particularly his predictive abilities. Jing Ke finds it odd he would be a general under the Qin emperor, as he was a central figure in the rebellion that destroyed the Qin dynasty following Shi Huang’s death.[10]
Da Vinci interrupts to inform them that a human army led by a human general is approaching by land. The heroes suspect this army will join up with Akuta’s army and try to overwhelm them with sheer numbers. At Jing Ke’s suggestion, they go to intercept Akuta's army before her reinforcements arrive.[10]
The heroes and Akuta’s team do battle until Liangyu arrives with her battalion, ordering both sides to stand won. She tells Akuta it is the Emperor’s command.[10]
Meanwhile, the Emperor clarifies to Koyanskaya his orders for Liangyu were to find Akuta and Chaldea and provide aid for the losing side. He is using this situation to determine which side truly benefits his empire, and which doesn’t. Koyanskaya reiterates that she and Akuta came to serve the empire in its hour of aid, which makes the Emperor wonder what exactly threatens his empire.[10]
Han Xin says the greatest danger to the empire is the rest of the world beyond the Storm Wall as it is cut off the Emperor’s blessings. He recommends sending in trustworthy soldiers to investigate the world outside the storm, though they first require a means to cross it. As Chaldea was able to cross it with their vehicle, he recommends seizing it and learning everything about it.[10]
The Emperor admits to Koyanskaya he has been calling her by the wrong name on purpose since he wasn’t sure if he should call her by the name she deserves: Daji. Koyanskaya tries to escape, but the Captain of the Guard renders her unconscious with a single strike. The Emperor then declares negotiations will begin anew.[10]
Speaking through the vibrations of Mash’s shield after firing a focus magnetic beam at it, the Emperor offers to give the Chaldeans Koyanskaya in exchange for letting him examine the Border. If they accept, they will be under his protection. This clearly upset Akuta, to which the Emperor reprimands her for trying to destroy Chaldea, along with the Border, despite knowing that wasn’t what he desired. However, since she still has her uses, unlike Koyanskaya, he will not punish her. He warns her though he will have Liangyu kill her should she insist on continuing her war with Chaldea.[10]
Ritsuka agrees to the Emperor’s condition, so the Emperor requests the Chaldeans to let the engineers Liangyu brought with her examine the Border under their supervision.[10]
He then reveals the line in low orbit is called the Great Wall, built to protect the world united under the Qin from extraterrestrial threats. But ever since the Storm Wall appeared, the Great Wall only covers China. So for the sake of reuniting his empire, he wants to manufacture vehicles like the Border, not believing what he was told about Lostbelts or Pruned Phenomenons. He hasn’t even seen the Fantasy Tree, but he knows Akuta is hiding something.
Da Vinci requests the Emperor speak with them directly so to at least see his face. But the Emperor reveals they have been looking at his visage for some time. Da Vinci realizes the floating construct at Xianyang is the Emperor——Qin Shi Huang. It is his holy vessel, the result of transferring his Authority from his earthly body to an undying machine and in the past 2200 years since it has grown and expanded with his nation.[10]
Qin Shi Huang[]
Holmes and Da Vinci deduce Shi Huang devised a means to immortalize his mind after analyzing Nezha’s remains, abandoning his previous attempts to become an immortal Zhenren through alchemy.[11]
The Chaldeans then discuss the potential consequences of sharing the Border’s schematics with the Qin and the eventuality of the Lostbelts competing for survival, like Kirschtaria said they would. They recognize Zero Sail is the sole advantage they have over the Lostbelts, but if a Lostbelt had that technology, they could easily dominate the others. Such would be the case with the Qin, who would attack the other Lostbelts to reclaim what they think is their lost territory. But while this could be advantageous for Chaldea, it would ultimately make them responsible for creating the biggest threat to restoring Proper Human History since they provided the Qin with the means to conquer the planet. They could also end up as collateral damage in the battle between the Lostbelts.[11]
Holmes finds it peculiar that Akuta seems to be trying to stop Shi Huang from expanding his territory, which is in contrast to the alliances Kadoc and Ophelia formed with their Lostbelt Kings. Her only interest seemed to be destroying Chaldea. Mash gets the sense Akuta wanted to do so before Shi Huang started paying attention to the outside world.[11]
Da Vinci gives Ritsuka a Mystic Code modeled after No Face May King for the purposes of hiding from Shi Huang’s sight. Then suddenly the Chaldeans hear what presumably sounded like another Benefaction. They leave the Border to check.[11]
It was indeed a Benefaction, which, according to Liangyu, is Shi Huang’s way of thanking the villagers for their hospitality toward the Chaldeans.[11]
The boy shares his portion with Ritsuka, which turns out to be medicine. Holmes (following a brief outburst) recommends having the drug analyzed, since it is likely to be unique to the Lostbelt. He is also curious about the wheat, which he is certain was heavily modified. He decides to study both the drug and the wheat after Da Vinci suggests it.[11]
Later, Liangyu speaks with Ritsuka, Mash, and Holmes while engineers examining the Border are on break. In answer to their confusion as to why she still lives, she reveals accomplished warriors such as herself are cryogenically frozen in Mt. Li during times of peace, and only awakened when needed.[11]
She confirms the Qin’s army is composed of the automatons and those waken from cryosleep to lead said automatons. The only living soldiers left are the royal guard in Xianyang, some of whom were taught Xian Arts by Shi Huang himself. But with the world truly at peace, the Emperor has no need for a standing army. Even as a child, Liangyu’s only experience with war was through history books because by then the Qin already dominated the planet. She only became a warrior to stop revolts.[11]
From Liangyu's account, Holmes deduces the Qin had achieved world domination by the 13th century. Liangyu reveals they implemented gunpowder well before any other country, so no other nation could oppose them. The discovery of the Fusang Tree was also helpful, as it helped to advance their medical science exponentially.[11]
The embodiment of the Xian’s secrets, Shi Huang discovered the Fusang Tree while searching the Xian world for the secrets to immortality, though he was already immortal by that point. With the medical knowledge he gained from it, he eradicated disease and hunger and made strength-enhancing elixirs, all of which made conquering the world all the easier.[11]
Holmes inquires about the farmland, finding its size widely disproportionate to the village’s population. Liangyu answers beyond the harvest there isn’t much work to do since the wheat grows by itself. She also confirms what the villagers can’t eat is taken to Xianyang. But wheat isn’t only grown for food, it also generates the Qin’s primary fuel source: Ethanol.[11]
Liangyu, having heard they’re from another world, then laments how Ritsuka and Mash are made to fight despite their kind natures and sees Mash’ adeptness at using her shield as an indication of how harsh their world is.[11]
Later that night, Spartacus speaks with Mordred about his realization that the Lostbelt has the peace and happiness he sought in life. He therefore questions if Chaldea should be here and if Heroic Spirits truly have a place in the Lostbelts.[11]
Speaking with Ritsuka, Mash compares the Lostbelt to Goetia’s vision for a human history free of strife and suffering. She disagreed with him because she felt a world without a modicum of pain or adversity felt wrong to her. But the Lostbelt seems to be close to what Goetia envisioned, yet still rich with life. Mash thus bemoans the fact they must destroy it.[11]
She then alerts Ritsuka to Lanling’s would-be ambush. He and his Master never agreed to a truce, so he sought to kill Ritsuka under the cover of night. Liangyu arrives to protect RItsuka and fights Lanling.[11]
With Liangyu done stalling for time, Shi Huang demands Akuta explain herself. Akuta merely claims everything she has done was for the prosperity of the Qin. Shi Huang, understanding threats to her life will not cow Akuta, orders Xiang Yu to crush his core. Akuta immediately begs the emperor to spare him, promising to serve faithfully from now. Shi Huang agrees to her pleas, so everything goes back to their respective camps.[11]
At their camp, Akuta explains to Xiang Yu that in the world where Shi Huang died naturally, he was hidden away in the secret Kuaji laboratory to bury the emperor’s quest for immortality following his death. But a man named Xiang Liang, who sought to use his superhuman abilities to further his ambitions of ruling China, found and reactivated him. He named Xiang Yu and presented him as his nephew, despite knowing he wasn’t human. Xiang Yu confesses his original chassis was humanoid.[11]
Continuing, Akuta reveals to Xiang Yu that he was based on Nezha. He looked human, so no one had reason to suspect he wasn’t, regardless of how exceptionally skilled he was. In time, future generations would he know him as one of China’s greatest warriors, yet none would ever know the truth about him.[11]
Xiang Yu, however, questions Akuta how she can know the truth about him if Xiang Liang kept it secret. He asks her who she truly is. Akuta answers she is the one who came to this Losbelt solely to be reunited with him, calling him her beloved Lord Xiang Yu.[11]
Land of Peace[]
The next day, Ritsuka and Mash tell the others what happened with Akuta. Da Vinci and Holmes reveal Akuta’s entire background was falsified, with all evidence pointing to Marisbury as the one responsible. It makes everyone question who she truly is and what her goal is because it seems more important than her responsibilities as a Crypter. Even destroying Chaldea is secondary to her concern for Xiang Yu, another mysterious individual.[12]
Mash notes how the name Xiang Yu only means something to those from Proper Human History while in the Lostbelt he is known as Kuaji Zero, as Ritsuka recalls. Da Vinci says Kuaji is where Xiang Yu’s uncle, Xiang Liang, began his revolt against the Qin following the emperor’s death and where Xiang Yu got his start as a warrior.[12]
Regardless, this Xiang Yu is from this Lostbelt, so Holmes cannot fathom why Akuta, who is from Proper Human History, would care for him so deeply as to abandon her other goals. Goredolf believes it’s because she fell with him at first sight.[12]
Afterward, the Chaldeans talk with Jing Ke, Spartacus, and Mordred about maintaining their truce with the Qin, at least until they can secure an antidote from Koyanskaya. Mordred is all for it, while Spartacus is vehemently against it. But he is left truly speechless when Jing Ke agrees with maintaining the truce. Holmes then winks at Ritsuka, Mash, and Jing Ke to indicate he wishes to speak with them outside.[12]
Holmes tells the three that his analysis of the Benefaction drug revealed that while it prevents illness by boosting a person’s immune system to an unfathomable degree with no adverse side effects, it also kills them before they reach old age. This explains why the heroes haven’t seen any elderly people. Furthermore, the drug was designed to be this way. The wheat was also designed to be more effective than its natural counterpart to eradicate hunger. Everything in the Lostbelt was designed to remove pain and suffering. Jing Ke thus compares the people to livestock, finding that it makes sense for Shi Huang to do so once he abandoned his humanity.[12]
Holmes then theorizes the Lostbelt lost its connection with the Throne because there is no suffering to facilitate the need for a Heroic Spirit.[12]
Jing Ke thanks Holmes for telling them of all this, as all her doubts are now gone. She swears to kill Shi Huang in the end, willing to wait as long as it takes and focus on curing RItsuka for now.[12]
Later that night, Liangyu overhears the boy reciting Li Bai’s poem and learns the Chaldeans taught him and the other children. She reports this to Shi Huang, prompting the emperor to call Chaldea Confucians.[12]
Morning Star of Rebellion[]
Nezha and Jing Ke report Spartacus has left and is leading some villagers toward the capital. As the Qin may see his actions as open rebellion, Goredolf advises Ritsuka to use a Command Spell to stop Spartacus, which Holmes concurs with. But Mordred implores Ritsuka to do that because if they do, Spartacus may forget why he came from the Throne to help. She instead asks them to let her convince Spartacus to stop, by which she means beating him until his legs give out.[13]
Ritsuka gives Mordred their approval. Jing Ke decides to come with, feeling partly responsible for the villagers’ decision to join Spartacus. Ritsuka, Mash, Mordred, and Jing Ke then depart, with Nezha staying to protect the Border.[13]
They eventually catch up to Spartacus and demand he stop what he is doing. He refuses to listen, so the heroes have no choice to follow Mordred’s plan.[13]
Much to Jing Ke’s frustration, however, the fight only seems to make Spartacus more excited. Regardless, Mordred continues fighting him, both unaware they are draining Ritsuka of magical energy and putting them on the verge of collapse.[13]
Suddenly, Nezha arrives with Fou and tells everyone to stop fighting. She informs them that Liangyu hijacked the Border and shows that Holmes gave her the Spirit Origin graph for safekeeping. Ritsuka calls Shi Huang out for breaking their deal. But Shi Huang counters Chaldea is a threat to his nation, accusing them of being Confucians.[13]
Jing Ke realizes Shi Huang has gotten worse these past 22,000 years and deduces it is because of his anger at her teaching the people how to read and write they all have been labeled as Confucians. She goes to explain what Confucianism is, noting how Shi Huang hates everything about it.[13]
Shi Huang proclaims the people live in blissful ignorance, but Chaldea has led them with their Confucianism, comparing to the two a tumor that must be excised before it spreads. He considers the gaining of knowledge to be the source of all conflict and so he keeps the people ignorant to maintain peace. It horrifies to think of worlds so filled with conflict, like the one the heroes come, as to facilitate the creation of a Counter Foce. He then orders Xiang Yu to kill the heroes.[13]
Jing Ke asks Ritsuka if she should apologize for pitying these people. Ritsuka tells her what she did wasn’t wrong. Hearing this invigorates Jing Ke, who declares they work to atone for their mistakes and ultimately learn to forgive one another. That is something she believes the Lostbelt will never have. The battle with Xiang Yu then begins.[13]
The heroes struggle against Xiang Yu as his near-precognition reads their moves before they happen. But the situation only gets when Akuta and Lanling arrive to assist him. Shi Huang permits it, saying there is little time left. The battle continues anew.[13]
Meanwhile, in the Border, which is being towed away, Liangyu accuses the Chaldeans of enlightening the villagers only to further their own ambitions. She hints something horrible will happen if the people are given knowledge.[13]
Shi Huang orders Akuta, Lanling, and Xiang Yu to evacuate the area. After they’re gone, Jing Ke surmises the emperor ordered a retreat because he is going to unleash an indiscriminate attack that will wipe out the entire area. Shi Huang confirms her suspicions, revealing he released a payload from the Great Wall that will strike the heroes’ location in three minutes. The heroes are disgusted the emperor would destroy the village just to keep Confucianism from spreading.[13]
The Great Wall’s payload becomes visible, horrifing the village to know the rumors about “stars” falling on villages that reject the emperor’s blessings were true. The boy even questions if it was wrong of them to recite poetry and try to go to the capital. Spartacus rejects it was wrong, though, believing they followed their dreams in search of freedom like any would do. He now knows what he must do.[13]
At his request, Ritsuka orders Spartacus with a Command Spell to jump. Spartacus is empowered and leaps toward the payload. He takes it head on and proceeds to destroy it with Warcry Overload.[13]
Mordred catches the falling Spartacus before he hits the ground. Everyone sees from his wounds that his Spirit Origin will not last much longer. Spartacus disappears, telling the boy that he will not die so as long as he keeps the light of rebellion alive in his heart.[13]
The villagers mourn for Spartacus, his sacrifice inspiring the boy to become like him one day. Then, as if in response, the Spirit Origin graph reacts to the leyline. Hope has finally blossomed in the people’s hearts, connecting the Lostbelt to the Throne.[13]
Meanwhile, in a forest, Chen Gong and Red Hare materialize.[13]
Dashing Through One Thousand Ri[]
Jing Ke suggests they split up into the three groups; one to pursue the Border, and two to take the villagers somewhere Shi Huang can’t observe. She tells Mordred and Nezha to guard the villagers, while she goes with Ritsuka and Mash to pursue the Shadow Border. Once the villagers are safe, Mordred and Nezha are to rendezvous with the Border pursuit team who will hide and wait near Xiangyang.[14]
In a dungeon cell, Koyanskaya is upset that her Spirit Origin has been sealed with a talisman, unable to believe Xian Arts could do that to her. Akuta then enters, and Koyanskaya, thinking she came to rescue her, asks Akuta to remove the talisman, which uses a god-sealing spell. Akuta, however, makes it clear to Koyanskaya that she always detested her, since she looks like a particular fox woman. Furthermore, she refuses to risk getting on Shi Huang’s bad side to help her and leaves.[14]
Ritsuka’s party continues to track the Border and suspect the Qin will interrogate the crew to understand how the Zero Sail engine if they cannot figure it themselves. Jing Ke, however, fears Shi Huang will have the crew executed once they have outlived their usefulness. The heroes are then attacked by automatons.[14]
They destroy the automatons but come across remains unrelated to their battle. Given that the Spirit Origin graph had activated, they consider the possibility a Rogue Servant was responsible. They decide to investigate further.[14]
The Priestess of the Alien God appears before Koyanskaya, who cannot understand what she is saying. But the Priestess’ words or action do not matter to Koyanskaya, for her contract is with the Alien God, even if the Priestess does speak for it.[14]
She asks her to remove the talisman, warning Shi Huang may cut down the Tree before it can produce seeds. But the Priestess leaves when Shi Huang speaks to Koyanskaya, completely unaware she was ever there.[14]
Shi Huang reveals he knows Koyanskaya was the one who brought over the monsters that were eating his people around the time Chaldea arrived. Koyanskaya tries to put the blame on Chaldea, but Shi Huang knows they would never kill for sport while she takes pleasure in it. Koyanskaya is surprised a record of her past self exists, even in the Lostbelt.[14]
With his greatest concern being Chaldea, Shi Huang tells Koyanskaya he can only spare rare moments for her. As such, he will have automatons torture her as an interim punishment until he can punish her himself. The automatons proceed to drill into Koyanskaya’s body.[14]
Koyanskaya begs him to stop the torture, saying she’ll leave the Lostbelt and never return. Shi Huang refuses as he is certain she would only torment other histories. He is fascinated, though, by the fact her Spirit Origin weighs 100,000 tons. But she is an enemy to mankind, so he will continue to have her tortured until he can devise a proper sealing ritual for her.[14]
RItsuka, Mash, and Jing Ke meet Chen Gong and Red Hare. Chen Gong confirms they are Rogue Servants and are in need of a Master. However, as they have their Lord Lu Bu’s reputation to uphold, they refuse to accept Ritsuka as their Master until they prove their strength. Red Hare thus fights the heroes to test Ritsuka’s strength.[14]
Chen Gong soon stops the fight, as he and Red Hare recognize Ritsuka is worthy of being their Master. As such they join the party and promptly prove their worth as allies when automatons attack the heroes.[14]
After the automatons are destroyed, the heroes are contacted by Da VInci, having modified their communicators to use Imaginary Number Space to boost their range. Holmes confirms they have been captured and are currently confined in Ankang. Jing Ke and the Border crew find odd, though, that the guards didn’t confiscate their communicators, as if it never occurred to them.[14]
On that subject, Holmes deduces the villagers’ primitive technology is the result of Shi Huang’s attempts to keep them ignorant, as all technological advancements are solely for the benefit of its ruler. He further deduces all of Xianyang’s technology runs on combustion engines, given ethanol is the Lostbelt’s fuel source. Any environmental impact from that is avoided though because the technology isn’t widespread. This also means there is no need for miniaturization and optimization. As a result, personal communication devices are inconceivable to the emperor and his people, a blind spot Jing Ke believes can be exploited.[14]
Ritsuka notices Goredolf hasn’t said anything. Da Vinci confesses the director’s condition has worsened to the point he cannot remain conscious. She explains the poison affects people differently depending on their karma, meaning the victim will be punished based how much bad stuff they’ve done. It is why Ritsuka’s condition has been little more than cold while Goredolf’s digestive system has failed. He was only getting by thanks to the secret IV drips Da Vinci was giving him. But away from the Border’s medical facilities, the director’s condition has plummeted.[14]
Holmes then reveals Koyanskaya is also a prisoner, so if they can all rendezvous at Ankang, they will have the opportunity to capture her.[14]
The Poppy Girl[]
Akuta tells Shi Huang that the Chaldeans will prioritize rescuing those imprisoned at Ankang over getting their most crucial asset, the Border, which is on its way to Xianyang, back. Shi Huang is confused why he can’t see the Chaldeans, but he has received reports of figures matching their description fighting near Ankang. Therefore, he permits Akuta to stay at Ankang, even giving her command of the guard. Xiang Yu, however, will stay at Xianyang, which Akuta accepts.[15]
Lanling admits to Akuta that the way Shi Huang views his subjects and the manner of his rule now that he is immortal frightens him. He asks her what she thinks of this eternal Qin empire.[15]
Akuta answers she doesn’t care and rants about how destructive humans are and how she’d prefer if they died out. She immediately apologizes to Lanling, though, and presumes he thinks she is a horrible person for using him for her own selfish ends. But Lanling admires her for her steadfast conviction and is honored to be her Servant.[15]
Ankang
The heroes reach Ankang undetected thanks to Da Vinci’s stealth devices. Jing Ke sneaks into the facility while the others wreak havoc at the front gate and rescues the Border crew, even getting stuff from the infirmary for Goredolf.[15]
Meanwhile, Shi Huang continues to analyze the Border, though he is baffled by the miniaturization of its electronics. Han Xin realizes from this that the Chaldeans may have built communication devices small enough to secret away on their person. The Captain of the Guard says he’ll arrange for more guards at Ankang, but Shi Huang tells him not to bother as hostilities are already underway. He further expresses disgust at the thought of the people having their own communication system, seeing it as a way for Confucianism to spread, and swears to destroy the Chaldeans for it.[15]
Ritsuka and Mash are reunited with the Border crew, who brought Koyanskaya with them. Holmes made her promise to provide an antidote in exchange for their help. Everyone then gets ready to escape when Lanling arrives with guards to thwart them. In response, Koyanskaya summons a Jotunn from her hair to deal with the guards while the heroes fight Lanling.[15]
After Akuta uses her last Command Spell, Koyanskaya triggers the explosive she planted beneath her. Akuta survived the explosion, however, and Lanling hurries to her. Koyanskaya tells the heroes to stop Lanling before he reaches Akuta. Mash fails to stop him, so Lanling reaches Akuta. Koyonskaya recommends they flee immediately, realizing the Chaldeans don’t know the truth about Akuta.[15]
Lanling implores Akuta to swallow her pride and feed on him so she may survive, for she has been reunited with her beloved after many years of grieving in solitude. It is his wish for her and Xiang Yu to live happily together. Reluctantly, Akuta drains Lanling of his Spirit Core through his blood, revealing her true nature is akin to a True Ancestor.[15]
With her healed, Lanling asks Akuta why she summoned him to be her Servant. Akuta answers it’s because of the warm memory of him speaking to her without fear. Lanling thanks his Master, calling her Yu Mei-ren. Koyanskaya reveals only she and Lanling knew the truth about Akuta.[15]
Though he understands she hates her eternal life and youth, Lanling conveys to Yu Mei-ren how comforting it is for mortals to know there is someone whose beauty will remain pristine forever. With those last words, Lanling disappears. Yu Mei-ren, sporting a new look, then engages with the heroes in battle.[15]
Travelers of the Century[]
Yu Mei-ren easily overwhelms the heroes, but leaves when Shi Huang reminds her to fulfill her pledge to him.
Once she’s gone, the heroes discuss their surprise at learning Akuta was Yu Mei-ren—Xiang Yu’s lover in life—and that Yu Mei-ren was a bloodsucker. But Da Vinci questions why Akuta applied to be Rayshift candidate at Chaldea.[16]
Koyanskaya suspects Marisbury recruited Yu Mei-ren under a false idenity in case humans couldn’t survive Rayshifting since her Elemental body would definitely survive. Da Vinci deduces this was before the previous her was summoned to Chaldea, recalling Akuta was already a staff member before Team A was formed. She and Koyanskya agree Yu Mei-ren was merely Marisbury’s guinea pig to test Rayshifiting’s viability. But since viable human Rayshift candidates were found and his Demi-Servant plan succeeded, Marsbury assigned Akuta to Team A solely to fill the roster. Then, taking a truck from the hangar, the heroes escape from Ankang.[16]
Yu Mei-ren recalls how she was persecuted throughout the centuries as a monster for being immortal, even though she looked like any other human. She never wanted eternal life and would have preferred dying with her beloved. Marisbury eventually found her and convinced her to join Chaldea, though she only agreed because she had nowhere else to go.[16]
She recalls how Xiang Yu despaired over what her fate will be. She seeks an end to eternity, so that she may tell her beloved he no longer needs to weep for her.[16]
Woken up by Shi Huang, Yu Mei-ren is reminded it has been five months since her arrival and is told that his analysis of her body is now complete. Thanks to that, he has learned the secrets of the Zhenren’s immortality, and so per their agreement he gives Yu Mei-ren custody of Xiang Yu.[16]
Yu Mei-ren asks the emperor, though, why he would need to study her when he has possessed the Fusang Tree. Shi Huang answers he never came across a single Xian or Zhenren, even when exploring their lands. So she is the first genuine Zhenren he has met.[16]
Shi Huang asks Yu Mei-ren what she will do now. Yu Mei-ren answers she would like to stay somewhere remote in Chia and live out her days in peace. As for the Chaldeans, she is certain that one of the Mt. Li warriors will kill them. But she doesn’t care if the Lostbelt survives or not and leaves with Xiang Yu.[16]
The Captain of the Guard admits Yu Mei-ren’s parting words shook him. Shi Huang replies Yu Mei-ren is a Zhenren, a true human, so if she voiced her intent to protect this world, he would have unleashed his wrath upon her, for only one human may control this world. The emperor makes it clears he views himself as the Lostbelt’s only human while his subjects are less so.[16]
Koyanskaya is tied by her hands and feet. She gives the antidote to her poison, but there is only one dose. Goredolf is foricbly given the antidote since his condition is worse compared to Ritsuka.[16]
Holmes deduces Koyanskaya came to the Lostbelt because of the Fusang Tree from which the poison was distilled. Koyanskaya reveals the poison was derived from distilling the tree’s roots with yin energy while the antidote—Xian Hou Ming Mai or “Immortal Lifeline—was made by decoting the tree’s leaves with yang energy. She came to the Lostbelt after learning from Akuta’s report that the Fusang Tree still lived. The tree is in Xianyang, so that is the heroes’ next destination.[16]

Xiang Yu learns from Yu Mei-re how his Proper Human History self culled the China’s population in the chaotic years following Shi Huang’s death and made himself enemy to all China all so the next rightful ruler, Liu BangWP, would have an easier unifying the nation.[17]
Shi Huang introduces the Dou Dou Yishan (Qin’s counterfeit Border) orders Liangyu to lead them once they’re mass produced and deployed against Chaldea. Han Xin excitedly takes her with him to talk tactics.[17]

A squadron of Dou Dou Yishan attacks the heroes, but the unmanned vehicles prove to be the very definition of “glass cannon” and are easily destroyed. Da Vinci gathers a few pieces for analysis. Holmes deduces Yu Mei-ren will not interfere with the Qin's attempts to eliminate them and will only step in to defend the Fantasy Tree. The heroes then rendezvous with Mordred and Nezha, who report they hid the villagers in a cave with provisions.[17]
The Captain of the Guard reports the Chaldeans are drawing closer to Xianyang. which means Shi Huang cannot deploy an orbital strike without endangering the capital. Han Xin says he is having Liangyu bolster the capital’s defenses and recommends holding the Chaldeans off with more waves of automatons and Dou Dou Yishan. The Captain of the Guard also requests deploying the rest of the royal guard. Shi Huang grants his request.[17]
Later that night, Jing Ke collects from Da Vinci the device she requested her to make, which uses the comms protocol Koyanskya stole the same as the counterfeit Borders. Da Vinci warns Jing Ke that it only has a fifty-fifty chance of working and considers her plan reckless. Jing Ke doesn’t mind, as recklessness is what made her into Heroic Spirit.[17]
Leaving the tent, she then confesses to Ritsuka and Mash that she’ll fight Shi Huang as a diversion for them to reach the Fusang Tree. She cannot stop thinking about how she has another chance to kill Shi Huang. Ritsuka reluctantly allows her to go, telling her to come back safe. Jing Ke cannot promise that, but she can promise she will make it to Epang Palace. She then leaves while the others head off to defend the camp.[17]
As Chaldea gets closer and closer to Xianyang, Xiang Yu realizes from his predictive calculations that the capital will fall. Even so, Yu Mei-ren refuses to let him defend the capital, as that isn’t his duty anymore. Xiang Yu is concerned, though, that he cannot see the future beyond Xianyang’s fall, as if the Lostbelt will cease to exist years afterwards.[17]
Yu Mei-ren tells him that is how it should be, saying he’s earned the right to be released from the burden of predicting the future and carrying the responsibility. Xiang Yu responds, though, that ability allowed him to conquer and unite the world under the Qin. But Yu Mei-ren reminds him while e was praised in the Lostbelt, he was feared as a monster in Proper Human History. Because of this reputation, no one in the Proper History ever truly understood the reasons for Xiang Yu’s conquests. Xiang Yu suspects she understood his counterpart though.[17]
He then realizes Yu Mei-ren searched for him so long because his counterpart, with whom she shared solace in the fact they were feared as inhuman despite looking human, died. He suspects his counterpart grieved for her, knowing she would suffer in solitude after his death.[17]
Battle at Xianyang[]
Arriving at Xianyang, the heroes encounter the royal guard, fighting them until they reach the city proper. There, to their bewilderment, they see people creating works of art, blissfully unaware of the current situation. Automatons and Liangyu are trying to get them to evacuate the city, but they’re all more concerned about their art dedicated solely to Shi Huang.[18]
Koyanskaya describes how these people have nothing but a single bed in the basement and spend every waking hour creating pieces of art far more magnificent than anything they’ll ever own. Da Vinci is disgusted that their only subject is Shi Huang, refusing to even call it art. Koyanskaya agrees, noting how entertaining one another has been key aspect of culture as long as people existed. But in the Lostbelt, only Shi Huang is considered a true person and thus the only subject for these artists, all of whom were brought from all over the world to spend their lives creating art directly beneath Epang Palace. This means artists like William Shakespeare and Hans Christian Andersen could never be born. Even Koyanskaya, who hates humans, cannot stand the sight of humans living as livestock.[18]
After allowing her to finish the evacuation, the heroes ask Liangyu if Shi Huang is worth obeying, despite knowing he massacres citizens who are even slightly suspected of being “infected” with Confucianism. In response, Liangyu confesses an orbital strike destroyed her hometown when a charlatan named Zhang Xianzhong deluded her neighbors into thinking they could form their own nation for the sake of a better life. But Xianzhong moved on to incite another village beforehand. Liangyu pities those led astray by his empty promises.[18]
If it were possible, she would be happy to never have become a warrior, for all she ever wanted was to till the land with her family in peace. She says the peace they enjoy now was only possible because Shi Huang kept the people ignorant. Thus, she declares she will never forgive Chaldea for disturbing that peace and fights the heroes.[18]
She is nearly defeated when the royal guard arrive to aid her. Shi Huang had released them from his service and ordered them to defend Xianyang.[18]
Liangyu asks why Chaldea threatens her world, but she dismisses Ritsuka’s answer as the words of a Confucian. She questions how their world can function when it is seeped in endless conflict. Her family and her fellow soldiers all died so peace could be achieved, so she will defend it at all costs, not allowing herself to be led astray. She then fights the heroes again, declaring she has no need of other countries and other versions of herself.[18]
She is fatally wounded in the end, and laments how people die every time someone tries to incite so-called progress. Having witnessed it once again, she wishes she stayed in cryosleep. Terrified by the Proper Human History, she says her world should have been the one to survive for achieving lasting peace. She asks Ritsuka what future they see past all the lives they’ve sacrificed, but Ritsuka cannot answer. Liangyu realizes only Shi Huang has the answer and dies, saying she only fought for peace.[18]
Shi Huang learns of Liangyu’s death and realizes he must face Chaldea himself. As such, he releases the Captain of the Guard and Han Xin from his service. After Han Xin leaves, the emperor asks the Captain to look after Han Xin as one last favor to him. The Captain complies and leaves after the emperor assures him he’ll be able to cut loose for the first time in a long time.[18]
With everyone else now gone, Shi Huang demands Jing Ke show herself. Jing Ke materializes.[18]
Humanity’s Whereabouts[]
Shi Huang vaguely recognizes Jing Ke, but he thanks her for inadvertently putting him on the right track to immortality. As a reward, he will personally condemn the Proper Human History, declaring his world as good and moral because of all he accomplished, having no faith humans working together could do the same. He considers himself the only true human despite his mechanical body for he bears all responsibility for this world alone. Jing Ke surmises he is saying his regime made the world complete, which he confirms.[19]
She calls him a fool as he essentially admitted that his world has stagnated. Thanks to becoming a Servant, she has learned many things she couldn’t in life and proclaims the future of humanity is all about possibility. Using the Great Wall as an example, she says the Proper Human History would use those same resources for space exploration. Shi Huang dismisses her words when she pulls out something the Qin has yet to develop: touchscreen smartphone.[19]
Goaded by Jing Ke, Shi Huang scans the device and is shocked to see its processing power is similar to his own. But he is even more shocked when Jing Ke reveals nearly every human in Proper Human History owns one. Jing Ke says people use them to communicate with each other so that they may reach an optimal outcome of understanding and prosperity.[19]
She admits her world is beset by endless strife and knows the day people unite as one is still far off. But even though that day may never come, people still strive ever forward and hope for humanity to reach unforeseen heights. People like that become Heroic Spirits and answer the summons of those who share that hope.[19]
Shi Huang finds such a world precariously dangerous and he cannot permit that. Jing Ke says that is why one of them has to die so the other can continue guiding the Earth. But Shi Huang questions how she will kill him with her dagger and reveals palace’s defenses are already trained on her. He then starts glitching out as Jing Ke reveals he had downloaded a virus when he scanned the phone. The emperor finally remembers Jing Ke’s name and shuts down.[19]
But not a moment later, he reappears in humanoid form and fatally wounds Jing Ke. He commends her and vows to remember her name, for she is the only one to make him fear for his life not once but twice. Jing Ke disappears, believing it is perhaps her destiny to fail at the very end. Shi Huang says she is wrong, though, declaring her true worth as a Heroic Spirt lies in dying with a smile, even as she fails at what set out to accomplish.[19]
Meanwhile, the heroes enter the Ministry of Technology where they find the Border and are quickly met by Han Xin. He pretends they do not need to fight since the emperor relieved him of duty. But immediately he shows he remains loyal and sends soldiers to stop Chaldea from retaking the Border. Under his command, these soldiers prove stronger than the ones from before.[19]
The Captain of the Guard soon arrives to help Han Xin, confessing the emperor asked him to watch over the general until the end. He then fights the heroes, but after an exhausting battle, they emerge victorious and continue toward the Fusang Tree, leaving him and Han Xin collapsed on the floor.[19]
With the building’s structure now comprised, the Captain implores Han Xin to escape before it collapses. However, the two of them are too exhausted to move.[19]
Han Xin realizes the Captain misjudged his stamina midway through the fight, suspecting the Captain thought he could keep the same pace from his younger days. The Captain, to his shame, admits he began to feel his age at 150, despite Shi Huang’s personal instruction in Xian Arts. Han Xin tells him he should have entered cryostasis at Mt. Li when he had the chance, instead of staying on active duty. The Captain feeling nostalgic for the days he spent with Shi Huang then passes away. Han Xin remarks how peaceful he looks, as if he is only sleeping.[19]
Xiang Yu tells Yu Mei-ren that the Chaldeans will soon reach the Fusang Tree in the treasury. He realizes the tree is far more important than being the cornerstone of the Qin’s peaceful civilization and that this upcoming battle will determine the fate of this world. Yet despite that, Yu Mei-ren doesn’t want Xiang Yu fighting anymore. Xiang Yu, however, cannot go against his programming to protect the empire, so Yu Mei-ren will accompany him till the end.[19]
Crimson Beauty Under the Moon[]
Arriving at the treasury, Koyanskaya collects the Fusang Tree samples necessary to create an antidote. She then offers to show the heroes the real tree in the inner sanctum, but Holmes is cautious of her leading them into a trap. His suspicions are all but confirmed when Xiang Yu and Yu Mei-ren arrive like he long suspected. Da Vinci and Mash recall he said they would meet Yu Mei-ren again at where the Fantasy Tree is hidden. Ritsuka realizes the Fusang Tree is the Fantasy Tree, something Holmes had long had a hunch about.[20]
Koyanskaya tells Yu Mei-ren to use the Tree’s power, Mayall’s, to kill the Chaldeans. Holmes notices a pattern with the Tree’s names and deduces something regarding their true nature.. The heroes then fight Xiang Yu and Yu Mei-ren.[20]
Unlike the previous times, though, the heroes are able to defeat Xiang Yu. Koyanskaya demands Yu Mei-ren remove Mayall’s disguise, not understanding why she is holding back. Shi Huang is surprised to see the Chaldeans in the treasury, vexed that it took longer for him to reboot that he realized. His presence leads Mash to conclude Jing Ke is dead.[20]
Koyanskaya, ignoring Yu Mei-ren’s pleas for her not to, awakens Mayall. The Fusang Tree splits open and the Fantasy Tree Mayall appears right outside the city. Koyanskaya reveals Mayall has been absorbing magical energy from within the Fusang Tree’s pocket dimension, extending its roots throughout China’s leylines without exposing itself.[20]
Shi Huang realizes he was being told the truth about his world being pruned. But instead of feeling dejected like Vitch expected, he is elated to know his world existed at all, thanks to his greatness. He then declares he will prune away all other worlds.[20]
Koyanskaya surmises the emperor’s behavior now is why Yu Mei-ren kept the Tree a secret. Yu Mei-ren knew lying to the emperor would be pointless, so she told him the truth, knowing he wouldn’t believe it. By hiding the evidence that would validate her story, she turned fact into fiction.[20]
Shi Huang deduces Yu Mei-ren didn’t want Xiang Yu to be deployed in the war to make the Lostbelt the Proper Human History. He calls foolish her for choosing love, so he will not permit her to participate in the battle for humanity’s future.[20]
Everyone notices the palace descending swiftly. Koyanskaya concludes there is nothing left for her in the Lostbelt and warps away. Shi Huang declares himself Mayall’s guardian and crashes the palace near the Tree.[20]
He emerges from the ruins in humanoid form, whose power Holmes compares to a Grand Servant. It was grown by applying the eclosion ascension method learned from the Fusang Tree to Yu Mei-ren’s physiological data. Shi Huang originally didn’t plan on using it, but his discussion with Jing Ke changed his mind. Thus, he challenges the heroes to personal combat to determine whose world will be humanity’s future. The heroes accept his terms and fight the emperor.[20]
Shi Huang is defeated and impressed by Ritsuka’s conviction entrusts the future to the Proper Human History. But Xiang Yu refuses to accept the emperor’s decision. His beloved Yu Mei-ren has chosen the Lostbelt as her home, one she found after wandering far too long in search of peace. So for her sake, he fights the heroes despite his injuries to both protect Mayall and see the wishes of his counterpart fulfilled.[20]
Mortally wounded, Xiang Yu laments that he has once again condemned Yu Mei-ren to an eternity of solitude. He too wished they could have spent their days endlessly in peace, but to his regret, he couldn’t make that dream a reality. He now understands how it feels to have regrets in the end and dies wondering what Yu Mei-ren’s fate will be without him, reflecting his counterpart’s last words to her.[20]
In maddened grief from his death, Yu Mei-ren discards her incarnated body and allows Mayall to absorb her Spirit Origin. Shi Huang mentions Xian and Zhenren like her are essentially divided spirits of the Fusang Tree, so if Mayall fed off the Fusang Tree to manifest, she may be able to possess it. He decides he will aid the heroes, recognizing Mayall is a threat to mankind and Yu Mei-ren wishes to use it as a tool for revenge.[20]
Fantasy Tree Mayall awakens
After it finishes absorbing Yu Mei-ren, Mayall blooms and begins to emit cosmic radiation, leading Da Vinci to conclude there is an actual galaxy inside it. The heroes then proceed with their final battle of the Lostbelt.[20]
Mayall is destroyed and Yu Mei-ren ejected from it. She realizes Xiang Yu grieved because he knew she would become a vengeful ghost and she is ashamed that is what happened. Shi Huang reminds her Xiang Yu’s grief was about how she would spend her final moments, so to end that grief, she needs only choose an ending for herself that will let Xiang Yu rejoice. He suggests she become a Heroic Spirit, believing Xiang Yu would no longer lament her if she protected humanity in his stead. He further motivates her to do by saying Xiang Yu may be summoned if she were to bring her knowledge to the Throne. Yu Mei-ren disappears, silently contemplating the emperor’s words.[20]
Chen Gong and Red Hare return to the Throne with their duty now fulfilled, both hoping to see Ritsuka again someday. The Chaldeans realize from this that the Lostbelt does not have long. Shi Huang assures them that his people will not despair at the coming end, for he didn’t raise them to feel such emotions. He congratulates the Chaldeans and tells them to head for humanity’s next crisis, knowing they will not forget their responsibility no matter what.[20]
Returning to the Border, Ritsuka finds the antidote in their room. Koyanskaya had kept her word and left the antidote while everyone was busy fighting Mayall. Ritsuka then takes the antidote curing them of the poison.[20]
Mash laments they destroyed another world. She understands dead-end histories must be pruned away, but this Lostbelt was so peaceful, unlike the harsh environments of the Russian and Scandinavian Lostbelts. Da Vinci suspects, though, that the Lostbelt’s stagnating peace was why it was pruned away. Mash reached the same conclusion as well, but recalling Liangyu said she fought to establish that peace, she can’t help but think all their efforts will be for nothing. Da Vinci and Holmes agree that is a possibility, but it is one of many.[20]
Sion contacts the heroes to confirm the Storm Wall has disappeared. She tells them to return to base for their next Order, the completion of which will be essential for their expedition to the Atlantic Lostbelt. Their next destination is the Indian Lostbelt, which has been repeatedly expanding and contracting. Captain will be joining in on this mission as well.[20]
Meanwhile, the villagers have left the cave, having been told by a doctor in a white coat it was safe now. Shi Huang stays with them as a human until the Lostbelt’s end.[20]
