LakshmibaiWP (ラクシュミー・バーイーWP, Rakushumī Bāī?), Class Name Saber (セイバー, Seibā?), is a Saber-class Servant summoned by Ritsuka Fujimaru in the Grand Orders of Fate/Grand Order.

Profile[]

Identity[]

She was a leader of Indian uprisings against the British Empire during 1857.

Though she claims to be possessed by the goddess Lakshimi, she is actually possessed by Lakshima’s sister, Alakshmi

Lakshmibai negotiated the survival of the kingdom of Jhansi with England after the king’s natural death. At that time, England did not recognize that an adopted child had the right to inherit the kingdom and annexed countries without an heir to the East India Company. The hopes of Lakshmibai, who attempted to survive through adoption, were crushed. When a special envoy of the Indian Governor-General Dalhousie visited Jhansi and declared the country will be annexed to the British territory, she firmly asserted she will not renounce Jhansi. After that, Lakshmibai became the flag-bearer of Jhansi’s rebellion.

Jhansi’s rebel army fought with such dauntless courage that the British army was astonished. In 1858, Jhansi’s castle finally surrendered to the suppression army, but Lakshmibai somehow escaped. Uniting with other rebel armies, she continued the resistance at the land of Gwalior. However, the momentum of the rebellion didn’t spread more than that, and after two months, the British army assaulted the castle of Gwalior. Lakshmibai fought hard, but while commanding on the front line, a bullet hit her and she reportedly died.

Alakshmi[]

She is a modern Servant related to the Indian Lostbelt furnished with Divinity. Through special circumstances, a Divided Spirit of Lakshmi dwells in her body, so she is akin to a half-Pseudo-Servant. Their names matching has raised her magical affinity, and boosted that situation.

Lakshmi, however, isn’t the one who dwells in her, but her elder sister, the goddess of misfortune and unhappiness, Alakshmi (there are theories about they being the same being/different aspects). Alakshmi is also said to be the second wife of the demon Kali that will appear in the period of Kali Yuga. Only one part of the goddess is inside Lakshmibai, so her personality is almost the same as Lakshmibai’s as a queen.

Lakashmibai rarely feels Alakashmi from within her body but sometimes that same Divinity leaks out and brings misfortune to her.

Appearance[]

Personality[]

A serious queen, but she has a simple and sturdy character. As such, she has a lot of pride. She isn’t particularly belligerent, but she’s wise enough to choose peace without hesitation if it is the best solution. On the other hand, if the only option is to fight, she has the strength to put her life on the line and fight to the end.

She has no particular wish from the Holy Grail. That is because she knows Jhansi is part of the country called India now and therefore is at peace. It is great if the people are happy and she does not feel the need to force them to return to being a kingdom. However, if the people were to come to harm unfairly, she would turn to any power to save them, whether it be the Holy Grail or Alakshmi.

She treats the Master as the supreme commander of the rebel army. So she’ll obey them, but will butt in if their strategies are poor. Also, if their bearing as a leader is bad, she’ll get mad and correct them.

Relationships[]

Jeanne d'Arc
"Hmm... I feel some mysterious affinity with that girl there. What? A frenchwoman who fought against England? ───I see. Seems like we'd get along."[1]

Role[]

Fate/Grand Order[]

Yuga Kshetra: Samsara of Genesis and Terminus[]

Over ten days before Chaldea's arrival, Lakshmibai is summoned to the Lostbelt. She is granted Alakshmi's divinity and tasked by Alkashmi to save her sister, Lakshmi, from God Arjuna. Concerning this task, Lakshmibai organizes the people of Dewar into a Resistance against God Arjuna.[3]

When Ritsuka's party comes to Dewar in search of the Resistance, Lakshmibai accuses them of being God Arjuna's Lokapala upon sensing Ganesha's divine aura. She fights them when Holy Beasts suddenly attack. She then jumps on the village wall as she accuses the group of leading the holy beasts to the village. Suddenly though, she loses her footing and falls the wall into one of the pitfalls meant for the Kali. After seeing the group slay the holy beasts, Lakshmibai realizes her mistake and apologizes. She introduces herself and lies that she has Lakshmi's divinity. Hearing this, Rama gets uncomfortably close to Lakshmibai to see if he can feel Sita’s presence. Lakshmibai grips his head with crushing force in response, as Rama realizes he cannot feel Sita’s presence. Despite the risk of being deemed flawed, Lakshmibai joins the group. She then leads them to the location of God's Skyboulder.[3]

Along the way, Lakshmibai reveals the Cube was already there when she was summoned. The group soon reaches the Cube, but the abnormal number of Kali there forces them to retreat.[4]

Later, Dewar is attacked by Nezha. During the fight though, Nezha decides to overload herself by rapidly using her Noble Phantasms because she couldn't stand having Kubera (who's considered the same as her father) exist inside her any longer. She then explains which territories each Lokapala is charged with, with exception of Ashwatthama who's on an independent mission. After Nezha disappears, it is deduced killing the Lokapala, thereby freeing the divinities inside, will return Servants like Rama to their original strength and reduce God Arjuna's power. The group agrees to target Asclepius first. Lakshmibai recalls a town in the southwest that she suspects Asclepius will appear at.[5]

The group arrive at a village, where a doctor came and stopped an epidemic from spreading. They suspect it’s Asclepius when he appears and denies it. He summons the undead using Yama's power. The group fights the undead, but they’re constantly restored. Suddenly, God Arjuna appears and defeats the group. He then leaves, and Asclepius prepares to finish them off. However, Daybit Sem Void suddenly appears and his Grand Servant destroys Asclepius' undead. After those two leave, the group recovers and force Asclepius to retreat. They then leave the village out of concern they’ll be considered outcasts after God Arjuna defeated them.[6]

On their way back to Dewar, the group learns from Scandinavia Peperoncino that God Arjuna’s power will decrease if people stop revering him as a god. They also realize Lakshmibai’s Resistance could be used as a starting point for this goal. Peperoncino suggests they incite rebellion in the other villages. Unfortunately, the group reaches Dewar to find it besieged by Holy Beasts. After killing them, they move the survivors to Bichu.[7]

The next morning, Bichu’s citizens and Dewar’s survivors argue about the latter slaying Holy Beasts. The town is then attacked by the Kali, which the group fight joined by the survivors and later the Bichu citizens. Aided by Vayu’s power, William Tell snipes the Kali from far outside the village, but the Holy Beasts continue attacking. After all the Kali are dead, William changes his target to Ritsuka’s party. Though suspicious of the group, Lakshmibai puts those feelings on hold to focus on the battle. She then asks Ajay to bring her a horse carriage in exchange for jewels. After it’s brought, she drives the others to William as Alakshmi’s powers attract William’s arrows to her instead of their intended target[7]

After forcing him to retreat, the group return to Bichu. Lakshmibai agrees to teach Bichu's citizens on how to fight. She then demands to know why Chaldea wants the rebellion against God Arjuna to succeed. Ritsuka confesses that the Lostbelt will disappear once its king, God Arjuna, and its Fantasy Tree are destroyed. Lakshmibai grabs Ritsuka, naturally angry at the deception. She soon calms down and signals to Ritsuka to meet her later tonight.[7]

That night, Lakshmibai asks Ritsuka's honest opinion on the Lostbelt inhabitants and what's happening to them. Ritsuka tells her they feel bad for the people, but they have no choice but to destroy the Lostbelts to save the Proper History. Lakshmibai is reminded of how she acted during the Indian Rebellion and realizes she has no right to judge Chaldea. Though she has issues with what Chaldea is doing, she agrees to continue helping them to stop God Arjuna, She then Ritsuka confess that they erased the people of three Lostbelts already. From their expression, Lakshmibai can tell that Ritsuka is a normal human trying to bear the responsibility of what they've done the best they can. After reiterating her intentions, she leaves as she wonders if Ritsuka would still trust her if they knew her secret.[7]

The Kali Yuga eventually begins, and the group prepares to leave Bichu with the villagers now trained in combat. But they’re forced to fight a large Kali that’s amalgamation of other Kalis instead. While they’re fighting, holy beasts and Asclepius arrive. Asclepius uses his newly granted Varuna divinity to strengthen the holy beasts. The group defeat him and the holy beasts when Asclepius notices his body breaking down. Peperoncino suspects God Arjuna gave him another divinity, knowing he’d self-destruct. Rama kills Asclepius. William then arrives, forcing the group into another fight. They struggle against him thanks to him using Vayu’s power to change his arrows’ trajectory. As the fight continues, Asha picks up a crossbow and aims it toward William. William aims his crossbow but notices himself unable to fire. Ganesha tries to get him to remember his son, but God Arjuna erased those memories.[8]

As William struggles mentally, Rama deals a fatal blow. He tries to finish him off when Ashwatthama arrives.[8] William gets up and shoots Ashwatthama as he remembers he was made to forget something. The group uses this opportunity to retreat. Ashwatthama chases after them when he suddenly collapses from William’s arrows. God Arjuna then arrives and begins preparing Mahāpralaya. The group run towards the Border to dive into the Imaginary Number Space. The Border crew pick up Koyanskaya after noticing her trying to hitchhike.[9]

After the Yuga cycle resets, the group head for Bichu. There, they discover Ajay, and the people of Dewar were erased. Lakshmibai confesses the goddess inside her is actually Alakshmi. Rama realizes that is why he couldn’t sense Sita inside her. He tells Lakshmibai not to blame herself for what happened just because she has the goddess of misfortune's power. He convinces her to continue helping by saying not her luck, but their skill and responsibility alone will determine the outcome of their fight. Afterwards, Vitch guides the group to Ashwatthama’s location.[10]

By the first day of the second Yuga, the group finds Ashwatthama in the mountains. They fight when they discover he has Krishna’s curse after noticing how painful regenerating is for him. Peperoncino realizes God Arjuna placed the curse on Ashwatthama after stealing his contract with him. Ashwatthama confesses in his rage that he followed God Arjuna’s commands to escape from his eternal suffering. With his rage further increasing his power, he fights the group again. Rama then transfers his curse to himself since he and Krishna are both avatars of Vishnu.[11]

Joined by Ashwatthama, the group leave the mountains. He suggests they deny the Yuga to weaken God Arjuna by surviving and rejecting his Noble Phantasm. Ganesha agrees to help achieve Ashwatthama's plan. Lakshmibai thinks back on how God Arjuna erases those he deems defective and unnecessary. She finds herself especially so, yet she still wants her wish granted. Considering her as a friend, Lakshmibai promises Alakshmi that she will grant her wish. She then agrees to help achieve Ashwatthama's plan. She and Ganesha decide to use their Noble Phantasms to help achieve Ashwatthama's plan. Ashwatthama decides to send them into the past, which he can do thanks to God Arjuna’s constant resting damaging space-time. He will send them to the beginning of God Arjuna's rule, from which they will have to become an ever-present element. If they can do that, it will prove God Arjuna’s imperfection and weaken him in the present. Holy beasts then start approaching, so Lakshmibai uses Alakshmi's power to call upon the Kali to distract them. She confesses she realized that connection when they fought that Kali amalgamation in Bichu. She suspects it was a consequence of using Alakshmi's powers in the fight against William. As the others fend off the holy beasts, Lakshmibai and Ganesha activate Nahi Doongi and Ganesha Vighneshvara. They then enter the rift opened by Ashwattham’s Mahakala Shakti.[12]

It is revealed God's Skyboulder was created through the combination of Ganesha and Lakshmibai's Noble Phantasms. They are eventually freed when Ritsuka touches the Cube. Rama supports Lakshmibai in regaining her balance after her millenias of isolation. He tells her that since Alakshmi is Lakshmi's sister, she is Sita's sister, so there is nothing wrong with helping his sister-in-law. Ashwatthama then disappears due to using his Noble Phantasm and God Arjuna severing their contract. However, to most of everyone's surprise, Karna returns from God Arjuna's "trash dump" thanks to Ashwatthama relinquishing his own body and Spirit Core to him there earlier.[13]

Through Ashwatthama’s Spirit Core, Karna knows almost everything that has transpired since his absence and has temporary access to Shiva’s power. Seeing him, God Arjuna descends to face Karna as final yuga approaches. Ashiya Douman also arrives, and Vitch leaves. God Arjuna and Douman retreat following a battle with Ritsuka’s party and Karna filling God Arjuna with doubt.[14]

Ritsuka's party follows God Arjuna in the Border to Fantasy Tree Spiral when they’re stopped by the Sea of Milk. Lakshmibai decides to sacrifice by using Alakshmi's powers to focus the poisonous waters on herself so they can cross. But Captain tells her not to do it. Lakshmibai realizes she and Captain knew each other in life. Captain confesses though he never personally experienced the sepoy rebellion, the regrets of the him who fled from it formed his core. He tells Lakshmibai that he felt a connection with her ever since he was inspired by the rumors about her fighting, and knowing they were fighting at the same time. Lakshmibai does not judge Captain for choosing to survive, saying her path in life was the only one available to her. It is the same now as Lakshmibai continues to persist in choosing to sacrifice herself. But Captain activates his Noble Phantasm to transform the Border into the Nautilus to cross the Sea of Milk, revealing himself to be Captain Nemo.[14]

Reaching landfall, Ritsuka’s party arrives at Spiral. Rama gives Karna his Brahmastra to grant him Vishnu's power. Taking Shiva and Vishnu's powers as his own, Karna's Saint Graph transforms. God Arjuna and Douman then appear. Douman has Spiral fully activate, and God Arjuna absorbs some of its power for his fight with Karna.[14]

After God Arjuna disappears, the group prepares to destroy Spiral when Peperoncino decides to stop them. Rama realizes Krishna’s curse disappeared with God Arjuna. Karna returns Rama’s Brahmastra to him, reverting to his original state. He spent all his magical energy in his fight with God Arjuna, and only through sheer force of will does he remain. He then joins Peperoncino and allows a fully revitalized and ascended Ashwatthama to retake his Saint Graph. Now rejoined as Master and Servant, Peperoncino and Ashwatthama fight the group.[14]

Eventually the group defeat them and destroys Spiral. Ashwatthama disappears, and Douman arrives. He intended to help defend Spiral, but Asclepius (resurrected through delayed Emulated Medicine) delayed him. After Douman’s current body crumbles away, Vitch transports Peperoncino to the Atlantic Lostbelt. As Lakshmibai prepares to leave, Rama tells her to join them again and carry herself with pride and dignity even with Alakshmi's power. Lakshmibai tells Rama that she feels he and Sita will reunite one day. She will pray for that day to come and bids Rama farewell. She tells Ritsuka that she refuses to accept the people will disappear nor does she condone the actions everyone took. In her belief, the people will reincarnate someday. Ritsuka looks sad at her words, but Lakshmibai tells them not to as she isn't telling them to share in her belief. She respects that Ritsuka for having the will to accept every other world will eventually them as the villain. She then disappears, wishing them good luck.[14]

Abilities[]

Lakshmibai dual wields a talwar sword and a rifle, using a technnique focusing on bodily rotations and thrusts. She is able to summon a barrage of gunfire. Her combat skills are impressive enough to impress Rama, who is as skilled as Karna.

Due to possessing AlakshmiWP's Divinity, she is essentially conduit for misfortune. This results in some rather unlikely incidents to occur, such as falling off a wall because the stone she standing on suddenly crumbled. More serious incidents are William's arrows redirecting to hit her vitals, even though he never misses and he was aiming at Ritsuka. However, having the Goddess of Misfortune's power seems to allow her to control Kali.

Skills[]

Class Skills[]

  • Magic Resistance (A Rank): Nullifies Magecraft of A-rank and below. Mages of the modern age are unable to damage her with their spells. This is due to the effects of the Saber-class and the divinity dwelling within her.
  • Riding (B Rank): The ability to ride mounts. She can handle most rides better than average, but she is unable to ride animals of the Demonic or Divine Beast rank.
  • Divine Core of the Goddess (C Rank): She possesses divinity as a Pseudo-Servant of a Hindu goddess.

Personal Skills[]

  • Charisma of the Rani (B+ Rank): A Skill that demonstrates the ability to command an army and a high charisma. The army-commanding power of the Queen who brought together the princely state of Jhansi and opposed the English forces. Rani is Hindi for "Queen". Thanks to her Charisma of the Rani Skill, she is able to reform Dewar's citizens in the Indian Lostbelt into a resistance against God Arjuna's forces.
  • Assault on Sipahi (B Rank): A Skill signifying how the Indian mercenary corps of the East India Company became the trigger for a rebellion. The rebellion in the princely state of Jhansi was triggered by the sipahis killing the English soldiers stationed there as they sympathized with the rebelling forces that occupied Delhi. However, since the sipahis left for Delhi after that, Lakshmi had no choice but to invest her private funds into hiring soldiers to protect the Jhansi that was left behind.
  • Resistance of Gwalior (A Rank): A Skill signifying her resistance to the bitter end against the British army at the castle of Gwalior that she reached after escaping from the fallen Jhansi. She lost her life on that battlefield.

Noble Phantasms[]

Lakshmibai's Noble Phantasm is Nahi Doongi, a Barrier Noble Phantasm that generates an absolute territory that protects from attacks/penetrations of the opponent. Rather than with the definition of “She protected and risked her life for the kingdom of Jhansi”, it activates by connecting with the causality of “What she protects is her kingdom”. It functions as an Anti-Army Noble Phantasm that converts the concept of “rejection against foreign enemies” into an attack when she is summoned as a Saber. Her sword flash carrying all her feelings is the determination to carry the country’s destiny on her back itself. Therefore, as a blade that will never bend or break, it’ll mow down the enemy with the radiance and weight of a country’s future.

Development[]

Creation and Conception[]

Lakshmibai was designed by Takashi Takeuchi in Fate/Grand Order. Her scenario writer is Hazuki Minase in Fate/Grand Order.[2]

Comment from Illustrator[]

"While hoping she would also show up as a Rider, I created the character design by focusing on the concept of a "tan Jeanne". The sense of distance is like that of the daughter of a relative of the Jeanne-san household. I was thinking whether the costume change in her third ascension would give off the feel of a princess general." (Takashi Takeuchi)[2]
