The First Singularity (第一特異点, Daiichi tokuiten?) is one of the seven singularities manifested by Beast I during the Human Order Incineration Incident. Located in 1431 AD France, its Humanity Foundation Value is C+ and, though it doesn't manifest, Demon God Naberius is designated to it. It was the first of the seven singularities visited by Chaldea Security Organization in the undertaking of the Grand Order to restore Earth and the Human Order.
The events of Chaldea's visit to this Singularity are covered in the first chapter of Observer on Timeless Temple, Hundred Years' War of the Evil Dragons: Orleans (邪竜百年戦争 オルレアン, Jaryū Hyakunen Sensō Orurean?). It has the subtitle Holy Maiden of Salvation (救国の聖処女, Kyūkoku no Seishojo?).

The Singularity occurred in France, 1431 AD, shortly after Jeanne d'Arc was burned at the stake. Using the Holy Grail, Gilles de Rais attempted to resurrect Jeanne but was unable to, instead creating a new Jeanne out of the Grail itself, twisted by Gilles's wishes and feelings. Jeanne Alter then summoned five more Servants, giving them all the attribute of Berserker. Jeanne Alter, Gilles de Rais and their forces subsequently began a campaign of revenge against France, killing King Charles VII and many others, including Pierre Cauchon, the bishop who played a key role in Jeanne's death, whom Jeanne Alter personally burned to death.[1]

Prelude[]
Within the Singularity, 1431 AD, Orleans, France, Ruler Jeanne d'Arc Alter and Caster Gilles de Rais summon five Servants to their command, bestowing them all with Madness Enhancement. Jeanne Alter sets her Berserk Servants to freely commit atrocities and spread chaos and destruction throughout France, before having Gilles bring in her prisoner - Bishop Pierre Cauchon, the man who had put the living Jeanne d'Arc to the stake, only three days prior.[1]
Horrified to see Jeanne somehow still alive, the Bishop begs for his life as the hate-filled Jeanne Alter condemns, taunts and finally burns him to death as her personal vengeance. She sets the Bishop's clergy to the mercy of her Servants, all given the attributes of a Berserker: Berserk Saber, Berserk Archer, Berserk Lancer, Berserk Rider, and Berserk Assassin, with Gilles de Rais acting as Berserk Caster.[1]
With her Servants, herself, and yet another asset summoned instead of a Berserker, Jeanne Alter aims to burn the world to the ground, raising a dragon as her banner of catastrophe - starting with Orleans.[1]
Meanwhile, in Chaldea, Ritsuka Fujimaru prepares for their first mission of the Grand Order with Mash Kyrielight - correcting the first of the seven Singularities threatening humanity's existence, and securing the Holy Grail used to create it. In the Command Room briefing by Dr. Romani Archaman, Chaldea Servant Leonardo da Vinci formally introduces herself, briefly astonishing Mash and Ritsuka with her apparent switch in gender from her historically male self, due to manifesting as Da Vinci's ideal of beauty - the Mona Lisa.[1]
With their first task being to secure a leyline as a base camp, and Roman and Da Vinci as mission support, Ritsuka and Mash begin their first quest, Rayshifting into the First Singularity: AD 1431, Orleans.[1]
Land of the Hundred Years War[]
Ritsuka, Mash and a stowaway Fou arrive in 1431-era France, in the middle of the Hundred Years' War, during a supposed period of respite, with King Charles VII of France having entered a peace treaty with Henry VI of England. Upon their arrival, they discover a massive, anomalous ring of light in the sky above, as large as North America.[2]
Spotting a French scout brigade, Mash attempts to make contact, only to accidentally aggravate them by not speaking French. Assured that temporal paradoxes cannot occur in a Singularity, the group non-lethally fend off the French soldiers. The soldiers retreat to their nearby fort, and the group follow in order to gain information.[2]
Chase the French Soldier[]
The party arrive at the fort to find it in mostly in ruins, filled with wounded soldiers, despite it supposedly being a period of peace. They inquire about King Charles, only to learn that the King is dead, killed by the flames of Jeanne d'Arc, who has risen again as "The Dragon Witch", forcing England's retreat.[3]
After fending off an attack by undead skeletons, the soldiers confirm Jeanne's apparent resurrection. The fort is then attacked by "Jeanne's" creatures from the air - Wyverns, a subspecies of Dragon. Suddenly, a flag-bearing Servant arrives to assist, rallying the confused soldiers to fight the wyvern attack.[3]
With the Wyverns defeated, the soldiers react in fear to the flag-bearing Servant - Jeanne d'Arc, Ruler-class - believing her to be the Dragon Witch. Jeanne beckons the party to follow her, and they oblige, seeking information.[3]
Jeanne's Mystery[]
In a nearby wood, the party join Jeanne in clearing out straggling monsters and wyverns before they can attack the fort. After nightfall, the party and Jeanne formally introduce themselves, and Chaldea explain to her their mission. Jeanne explains that she manifested mere hours before, but is highly weakened, and lacks many of the powers she should possess as a Ruler, including the ability to discern Servant's True Names.[4]
They deduce that a second Jeanne d'Arc has manifested, the true "Dragon Witch" who killed King Charles VII, controls the dragons, and committed a massacre in Orleans, further deducing that this second Jeanne, "Dark Jeanne", possesses the Singularity's Grail. With Orleans occupied, the foundation of humanity and civilisation is at risk. Jeanne resolves to take back Orleans and defeat the Dark Jeanne to save her country, with the party choosing to join her without hesitation.[4]
The team plan to gather information on the enemy before committing to an assault on Orleans, potentially finding allied Servants. However, Jeanne does not possess her Ruler ability to detect Servants, but notes that the Dark Jeanne would not be similarly hampered - making their location likely already compromised.[4]
After Ritsuka sleeps, Jeanne and Mash talk alone, Jeanne sharing to Mash her insecurities regarding her incomplete summoning. Being unable to access her knowledge from the Throne of Heroes, Jeanne reveals she feels much like a brand new, inexperienced Servant - an experience Mash relates to as a Demi-Servant, and she uses her experiences with Ritsuka to comfort and encourage the Ruler.[4]
Information Gathering[]
The following day, the company set out to gather information from the nearby towns and forts surrounding Orleans, making for the town of La Charite. Suddenly, Roman detects a Servant's presence in La Charite, which leaves immediately after. Realising the town is burning, they rush to the scene. They arrive to find the town already burnt to the ground, with no remaining life signs, and crawling with undead. They fight off the zombies, as well as a group of wyverns arriving to feast on the townspeople's corpses.[5]
Jeanne is horrified at her other self's actions, unable to understand how hateful she must have become in order to commit such atrocities. However, Roman alerts them to the Servant presence returning to the scene - five Servants, closing fast. Despite Roman and Mash's calls, Jeanne stands her ground and awaits their arrival, wishing to find out her other self's true intentions.[5]
Dark Jeanne[]
Jeanne Alter arrives in La Charite, with Berserk Lancer, Assassin, Rider and Saber. The two Jeannes confront each other, both astonished and disgusted at their contrasting natures. Jeanne questions Jeanne Alter as to her motives, to which Jeanne Alter questions why Jeanne would want to save the country who betrayed her. Jeanne Alter means to burn France down as vengeance for being betrayed, no longer able to hear the Lord's voice, and condemns the good Jeanne for her naivete and being incapable of growth.[6]
Jeanne Alter tasks Berserk Lancer and Assassin with killing Jeanne. The two Servants attack, while also arguing over how to divide Jeanne up after killing her. Together, the team manage to fend off Berserk Lancer, revealed as Vlad III, the Lord Impaler, by Berserk Assassin, revealed as the adult Elizabeth Báthory, or Carmilla.[6]
The two Servants continue to argue amongst each other as they attack, and the team fight off Carmilla and her wyverns. Dissatisfied with both their failures, Jeanne Alter calls them off despite their protests, preparing to send the other Servants after them. The team take the opportunity to try and flee, fighting their way through the line of wyverns surrounding them, while Jeanne holds off her other self, and Dr. Roman panics and attempts to consult Internet idol Magi★Mari, to little success.[6]
Suddenly, the team is joined by a cheerful, young girl Servant bombastically coming to their rescue. Berserk Saber recognises her as Rider, Queen Marie Antoinette, the Flower of Versailles. Marie confronts the enraged Jeanne Alter, openly opposing and taunting her, and comically allying with the good Jeanne. Marie fends off Jeanne Alter's Servants alone, while the Chaldea team continue to fight their way through her wyverns.[6]
With the wyverns defeated, Marie signals her Servant companion - Caster, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who uses his Noble Phantasm, Requiem for Death, to allow them all to escape. Angered, Jeanne Alter tasks Berserk Rider with tracking the heroes down, and reporting their location to Jeanne Alter without fighting. Carmilla announces her intent to kill Marie first, to Berserk Saber's - revealed to be Chevalier d'Eon - quiet dismay. After tasking her remaining Berserk Servants to commit further wanton slaughter, Jeanne Alter leaves them and flies away to summon additional Servants.[6]
One Thing After Another[]
The group successfully escape La Charite with Marie and Amadeus, and make for a leyline in a nearby forest detected by Roman. Clearing out the monsters surrounding the leyline, they settle down to rest for the day. Mash creates a summoning circle to connect to Chaldea, while Da Vinci gives a brief lecture on Servant class affinity.[7]
As they fend off periodic attacks by roaming monsters, the new Servants properly introduce themselves as Rogue Servants inexplicably summoned without a Master into the Singularity, with Marie in particular idolising an embarrassed Jeanne. With Chaldea explaining the circumstances of the Singularity to the pair, Marie suspects Berserk Saber's true identity as D'Eon.[7]
Jeanne notes that Jeanne Alter's Servants have been granted Madness Enhancement, giving them Berserker-like traits, and further theorises that the rogue Servants were summoned as a natural reaction by the Grail to oppose it already having a wielder before a Holy Grail War has begun. They suspect this implies other Servants may have been summoned similarly throughout France. The team decide to have Dr. Roman search for these Servants before Jeanne Alter can find them to compensate for Jeanne's diminished Ruler capabilities.[7]
As they rest for the night, Marie and Jeanne have a girls' talk, bonding over their respective childhoods before becoming a Servant. However, the camp is attacked by monsters and wyverns, followed by an approaching Servant - Berserk Rider, who reveals herself as Saint Martha, tamer of the Tarasque. In her efforts to resist Jeanne Alter's Madness Enhancement and maintain her sanity, she violates her orders to observe the group to test them in battle instead, imploring them to slay her to prove their might.[7]
Martha is defeated by the group, and as she disappears, she warns the group that Jeanne Alter controls a mighty Dragon far beyond their abilities, and tells them to seek a Dragon Slayer Servant capable of defeating it in the city of Lyon.[7]
Search for the Dragon Slayer[]
In her palace, dissatisfied with Berserk Rider's defeat, Jeanne Alter orders Gilles to contact the Berserk Assassin. Gilles assures Jeanne Alter that she is the real Jeanne, and she resolves to correct the mistake of her existence as part of her regret, encouraged by Gilles. She sets out to mobilise with an unknown asset, joined by newly summoned Servants - Berserker-class Lancelot, Knight of the Lake, and Assassin-class, executioner Charles-Henri Sanson.[8]
After asking around for information in a nearby town, Marie returns to the fort where the team is hiding to report that Lyon had been destroyed a while before, with its refugees settled in the nearby town - Lyon now being filled with hellish monsters. However, she also reports that Lyon supposedly had a protector, a knight that defended it from attacking wyverns and monsters - before being overwhelmed by the arrival of enemy Servants and going missing, resulting in Lyon's destruction. They suspect the knight to be the Servant they are looking for.[8]
Marie also notes that supposedly, General Gilles de Rais had mobilised the routed soldiers in preparation to take back Lyon - they resolve to avoid him to prevent a misunderstanding, with Marie giving Ritsuka a cheeky kiss. After subduing a rogue group of soldiers-turned-bandits, they set out for Lyon.[8]
Upon reaching the ruins of Lyon, they split up to search for Martha's Servant, with Roman cut off by bad reception - Marie and Amadeus searching the west, and Jeanne, Mash and Ritsuka searching the east. Ritsuka's group find the Lyon townspeople turned into swarms of undead, and a fight breaks out to destroy them and arriving wyverns. They are quickly rejoined by Marie and Amadeus, and an arriving enemy Assassin - The Phantom of the Opera, who controls Lyon under Jeanne Alter's orders.[8]
They defeat the Phantom, and he disappears, singing a taunting song of Jeanne Alter and her evil Dragon. At that moment, Roman reconnects, warning them of an ultra-size lifeform and three Servants approaching - Jeanne Alter's forces. They decide to stay to fight and find the Dragon Slayer, and Roman detects a faint Servant signature in a nearby castle.[8]
Attack of the Giant Dragon[]
Inside the castle, Jeanne and Mash find the Dragon Slayer Servant, heavily wounded and delirious, and warn him of the approaching dragon. They return outside to witness the arrival of Jeanne Alter on her steed - the Evil Dragon Fafnir of Norse Mythology. Fafnir attacks, with Jeanne and Mash barely defending with their Noble Phantasms, Luminosité Eternelle and Lord Chaldeas. Their defence buys time for the Dragon Slayer - revealed to be Siegfried, the legendary slayer of Fafnir - to unleash his own Noble Phantasm, Balmung, forcing Jeanne Alter and Fafnir to retreat.[9]
Siegfried collapses from his wounds and exhaustion, and the group flee Lyon. Jeanne Alter sends her following Berserker and Saber after them to kill Siegfried, with the Berserk Assassin Carmilla soon to join them. In their flight, the group discover the French army under attack from wyverns and undead, and stop to assist.[9]
Jeanne Alter's Servants join the fray - Lancelot and Charles-Henri Sanson, the latter of whom Marie and Amadeus immediately recognise. Sanson has come to kill Marie in particular, feeling anticipation towards executing the same person twice. Jeanne leaves to help the French army retreat, who unfortunately mistake her for the Dragon Witch, while the rest of the group battle Lancelot and Sanson.[9]
Carmilla arrives to confront the lone Jeanne, taunting her as the French soldiers' abandon and insult her in their misunderstanding, but Jeanne remains steadfast in her optimism. Suddenly, General Gilles de Rais leads the French army to rain cannon fire on Carmilla's wyverns to assist Jeanne, allowing her to gain the upper hand. Overpowered, Carmilla orders Lancelot and Sanson's retreat. However, Lancelot, spotting Jeanne, goes mad and attacks her, mistaking her for King Arthur. Carmilla and Sanson abandon the knight and retreat, while the heroes assist Jeanne to fight Lancelot.[9]
Lancelot is defeated, regaining a modicum of his sanity as he disappears. The living General Gilles calls to them, overjoyed to find the true Saint Jeanne alive, and not the Dragon Witch. However, Jeanne is unable to bring herself to answer him, for fear of endangering him to Jeanne Alter. They leave, as the General Gilles hypothesises the possibility of two Jeanne d'Arcs.[9]
Pause[]
The heroes stop to rest at an abandoned fort. Siegfried explains that he was summoned early in the Singularity, and after being nearly killed by Jeanne Alter's Servants, one of them - Saint Martha - secretly helped to hide him in Lyon, managing to maintain some of her sanity.[10]
Examining Siegfried's wounds, they determine that he has had multiple curses placed on him, and cannot heal normally - only Baptism Rites from a high-ranking Saint Servant can break his curses, with Jeanne not having the power to do so. At Marie's suggestion, the team decide to split up to search France for a Saint Servant, believing one may have been summoned by the Counter Force.[10]
Drawing lots (also at Marie's insistence), they divide into two teams - Marie and Jeanne as a pair, and Amadeus, Mash, Ritsuka, Fou and the injured Siegfried as the other team. Amadeus is apprehensive about leaving Marie, but eventually relents.[10]
Marie and Amadeus talk once more before they part. While comically discussing Amadeus' first meeting and proposal to Marie as children, Marie laments ending her life as a silly, arrogant queen who childishly loved France. Amadeus reassures Marie that the country had always loved her, otherwise they could not have come to hate her to begin with, comforting Marie as they part, Marie wishing to hear Amadeus' piano when they next meet. The teams split, keeping contact via a communication device given to Jeanne.[10]
Ritsuka and Amadeus talk, Amadeus talking of his having come to terms with not being with Marie and his decision to commit entirely to his music. Mash questions his love for Marie, remembering his earlier assertations that all humans are filthy in his eyes. Amadeus assures her that one can still love things that are "filthy", not only beautiful things, a concept Mash struggles to comprehend, but Amadeus guarantees she will learn eventually on her journey.[10]
Meanwhile, Jeanne confides in Marie her unease, and admits being unable to understand her evil counterpart's motivations. Marie consoles her, and contrasts her own execution to hers - she had felt a small amount of hatred at those who killed her and her children, while Jeanne, who unconditionally loves people, does not, and is thus unable to comprehend having an evil side. Marie encourages Jeanne to openly reject the Dragon Witch as not the true Jeanne when they meet.[10]
Saint[]
Ritsuka's group close in on their destination - the town of Thiers, where Roman detects two rogue Servants. Seeing signs of a battle and a hellish noise that pains Amadeus, they rush to the scene. There, they find a Lancer - the younger Elizabeth Báthory, and a Berserker, the Japanese folklore beauty Kiyohime, in the midst of a heated, rapidly-escalating argument.[11]
The group rush to break up the fight, battling past monsters and wyverns to reach them, Amadeus in particular being deeply irritated by the pair's cacophonous spat. With Siegfried injured and Amadeus near-catatonic, Ritsuka and Mash attempt to break up Elizabeth and Kiyohime's fight, only to accidentally aggravate both of them. The pair unexpectedly form a truce to fight Ritsuka's team, forcing them to subdue the pair in battle.[11]
After pacifying the pair, the party questions them for any leads on Saint Servants. Kiyohime reveals she encountered one such Servant before meeting Elizabeth - Saint George, or Georgios, who headed west, the same direction Jeanne and Marie went. Mash contacts Jeanne's team, who is already making contact with Georgios in the western town.[11]
Jeanne and Marie convince Georgios to join them, after they complete the town's evacuation. However, the town is suddenly attacked by Jeanne Alter and her forces. Georgios is unwilling to leave before completing the evacuation, having been entrusted with their protection, but Marie offers to remain behind in his stead to protect her people as the Queen of France, despite Jeanne's protests. Reluctantly, Jeanne and Georgios flee, and Marie is met by Sanson, her executioner. Sanson claims to have the only right to kill Marie a second time, seeing it as his profession of love and respect to her.[11]
Rushing over, Ritsuka's group arrive at the western town, fighting through Jeanne Alter's forces to reach the fleeing Jeanne and Georgios. Meanwhile, Marie defeats Sanson in single combat, and she rejects him, accusing him of losing his way after so many executions. Sanson is devastated, wishing only for her to forgive him, but Marie assures him that she never held a grudge towards him, before he seemingly disappears.[11]
Jeanne Alter arrives and confronts the lone Marie, dissatisfied that her other self has already escaped. Marie openly rejects Jeanne Alter's feelings of revenge, citing her own royal sense of responsibility, accepting her own fate when her people deemed her unfit for the sake of their happiness. With a final farewell to the Jeanne she knew, and a parting question as to Jeanne Alter's true self, Marie deploys her Noble Phantasm, Crystal Palace, to make her last stand.[11]
Baptism Rite[]
Ritsuka's group reunites with Jeanne and Georgios, learning of Marie's sacrifice, Amadeus having already come to terms with it since their parting. While Jeanne and Georgios heal Siegfried, Elizabeth and Kiyohime join the group, both contracting themselves with Ritsuka (with both also becoming unusually possessive of them).[12]
With Siegfried fully healed and ready for battle, the team make camp in a nearby forest, preparing for the final assault on Orleans alongside Jeanne the next day. Mash and Amadeus are unexpectedly separated fighting off monsters, and find themselves outside the forest alone.[12]
Mash takes the opportunity to ask Amadeus about his words after Marie's death - that humans choose who they love. Amadeus teaches her that humans have the obligation to choose what they care for and believe in for themselves, learning from their experiences in the world - before eventually, returning the favour by making their own mark on the world, through their legacy. He assures Mash that humanity will always be able to prevail over evil, consoling her, before they return to camp.[12]
While defending the camp from monsters, Amadeus and Jeanne talk together of Marie's idolisation of her, seeing a kindred spirit in her, a young woman who stood against the world, and Jeanne resolves to save France in order to grant her late friend's wish.[12]
In Orleans, it is revealed to Jeanne Alter by Gilles that Sanson survived the battle with Marie, but lost his mind from her rejection of him, becoming a mindless shell still fit to be a footsoldier. D'Eon arrives from their search of southeastern France, warning Jeanne Alter of the heroes' plan to assault Orleans in a final battle. Jeanne Alter and Gilles mobilise their entire force of Servants and dragons to meet them on the battlefield.[12]
The following day, the heroes make their battle plan. Siegfried and Ritsuka intend to take down Fafnir, Elizabeth resolves to confront her older self, Carmilla, while Jeanne plans the same with Jeanne Alter. The other Servants resolving to protect the others from wyverns from other enemy Servants, while Roman acts as scout. With planning complete, the heroes begin their march on Orleans.[12]
March to the Orleans[]
En route to Orleans, the heroes are met by a swarm of wyverns, led by the Berserk Archer, Atalanta, forced by her Madness Enhancement. They defeat Atalanta, freeing her from her insanity. She encourages the heroes to win as she vanishes, after which Roman detects the approach of an ultra-size lifeform - Fafnir has left Orleans, and the final showdown is about to begin.[13]
Jeanne and Jeanne[]
The two factions confront each other on the battlefield. Jeanne Alter announces her intent to turn France into a nest of dragons, sparking a new Hundred Years' War of Evil Dragons. Suddenly, the French army arrives to aid Jeanne, led by the living Gilles de Rais, firing on Fafnir and the Dragon Witch's forces. Siegfried steps forth to fight Fafnir, and Jeanne Alter sets her Servants to defend the Dragon.[14]
Vlad and D'Eon arrive to confront them first, with Jeanne, Mash and Ritsuka defeating them in single combat while Gilles' army fends off the wyverns. D'Eon thanks the heroes after their defeat, apologizing to the late Marie as they disappear. Vlad accepts his defeat, imploring Ritsuka to resummon him again to witness his true power.[14]
The heroes next encounter the mindless Sanson, which draws the ire of Amadeus. Amadeus' presence inadvertently restores Sanson's sanity, reminding him of their bloody rivalry over Marie. As one last gift to Marie, Amadeus helps Ritsuka kill Sanson for good. Meanwhile, the two Elisabeths face off against each other, each finding themselves irreconcilably disgusted at the other. Wishing to confront her sins, the younger Elizabeth rejects her future self, and she defeats Carmilla together with Ritsuka.[14]
With Jeanne Alter's Servants wiped out, Ritsuka and Mash finally confront Fafnir alongside Siegfried, and utterly destroy the Evil Dragon in a final battle, turning the tide and sending the wyverns into chaos. On the verge of defeat, Jeanne Alter retreats to her castle, beckoned by the sudden appearance of the Caster Gilles. Jeanne and the heroes give chase.[14]
Chase After Jeanne Alter[]
Jeanne, Mash, Ritsuka, Elizabeth and Kiyohime chase Jeanne Alter and Gilles to their castle, the other Servants remaining outside to mop up the wyverns. Jeanne Alter heads back to summon a new Servant, while Gilles remains behind to face the group, using his Noble Phantasm, Prelati's Spellbook, to delay them with his creations.[15]
The heroes battle their way through the castle, eventually meeting Gilles, who claims Jeanne Alter is the true Jeanne. They fight their way past Gilles, with Elizabeth and Kiyohime staying behind to keep the Caster occupied. A slightly bothered Jeanne, Mash and Ritsuka push on forward to the throne room to confront the Dragon Witch herself.[15]
The Dragon Witch[]
Inside the throne room, Jeanne confronts the Dragon Witch. Following Marie's words, Jeanne simply asks her evil self if she remembers her family. It is made apparent that Jeanne Alter has no memory of her peaceful life in the country, before becoming the Saint, making her hatred and feelings of betrayal false and unfounded.[16]
Her suspicions confirmed, the emboldened Jeanne resolves to defeat the Dragon Witch, but out of pity instead of anger. Out of desperation, Jeanne Alter summons a force of Shadow Servants to stop the heroes, to no success, before fighting them herself in a Grand Battle.[16]
After an intense fight, Jeanne Alter is finally defeated. Suddenly, Gilles arrives, reassuring her that he will continue her duty, and comforts her as she disappears, leaving behind the Holy Grail. Gilles takes the Grail, revealing himself as the true wielder of the Holy Grail. "Jeanne Alter", as she was, had never existed as a Servant in the Throne of Heroes, as she was not a true aspect of Jeanne's inner darkness. Therefore, the Dragon Witch was an entirely original creation, given form by the Holy Grail by the true mastermind, Caster Gilles de Rais.[16]
Gilles admits his original wish was to revive Jeanne d'Arc, but was rejected by the Grail. Thus, he instead created a new Jeanne - the Dragon Witch - based on his own twisted longings and deep-seated feelings of hatred and betrayal. Unable to forgive his country, Gilles projected his feelings onto his wish to create a Jeanne resurrected as a vengeful hate-filled witch, made from the Holy Grail itself, a Jeanne contradictory to the Jeanne of life.[16]
His own feelings of hatred finally overcoming his idolisation of Jeanne, Gilles names Jeanne as his enemy. Jeanne resolves to stop him, as the Ruler and judge of the Holy Grail War, and together with Mash and Ritsuka, battle and defeat Gilles in a final Grand Battle, the last opponent of the Singularity.[16]
With Gilles defeated, and the Holy Grail retrieved, the Singularity begins to crumble as the timeline restores itself, and Mash, Fou and Ritsuka prepare to Rayshift back to Chaldea. The battle finally won, the allied Servants begin to disappear as they say their goodbyes and congratulate Ritsuka, their service complete.[16]
The living (Saber) Gilles arrives in the throne room, reuniting with Jeanne one last time. As Mash, Fou and Ritsuka return to Chaldea, Jeanne says her goodbyes, assuring them and Gilles that they will eventually meet again.[16]
Safely at Chaldea, Dr. Roman congratulates them on their first successful Grand Order, despite finding no sign of the traitorous Lev Lainur, and Da Vinci reports that 15th century France has been restored completely. As they return to their rooms, Mash ponders on Gilles' wish, in awe that raw feelings are powerful enough to destroy the world - a trait that Ritsuka notes as quintessentially human. Struck by this revelation, Mash resolves to follow Amadeus' words to her, and continue to grow and learn bit by bit as a human.[16]
