Alternate Versions
Gáe Bolg

Gáe BolgWP (ゲイ・ボルク, Gei Boruku?, "Gáe Bulg" in Fate/unlimited codes) is a cursed spear with an ominous design that was obtained from Scáthach in the Land of Shadows by Cú Chulainn and one of the many weapons inside Gilgamesh's Gate of Babylon. Gáe Bolg was carved from the remains of Curruid's skull.[1] Its name is derived from the term for "serrated throwing weapon", ga bool’ga, evoking an image of lightning.[2] Scáthach had wished for him to slay her with the spear, but she had already ceased being mortal by the time he received it from her. It is a glory given to only the most gifted of warriors, and it was not utilized once after he left the Land of Shadows until his fight with his close friend, FerdiadWP. He later used it again on his son, ConnlaWP, when he was backed into a corner during their fight. The spear leaves behind but one regret: that it has only taken away the lives of his loved ones. It killed his one and only close friend and his son that grew up in a distant land, even though it was meant to have killed one woman before them.

It is unique in that it functions in two different ways, each different enough to have them be treated as separate Noble Phantasms. The Anti-Unit thrusting technique of the spear is the main offensive ability he utilizes, but the Anti-Army throwing ability is the spear's true function as a throwing weapon. It is descended from Gungnir, which belongs to Odin in Norse Mythology, and Brionac: The Five Roaring Stars (轟く五星(ブリューナク), Todoroku Go Sei(Buryūnaku)?), the lance of the Celtic god of light and Cú Chulainn's father, Lugh.[3] Due to its large size, it was said that no one but Cú Chulainn was powerful enough to wield it as a throwing weapon, and some stories say that he threw it from the fork of his toes to increase its power.[2]

Gáe Bolg: Barbed Spear that Pierces with Death (刺し穿つ死棘の槍(ゲイ・ボルク), Sashi Ugatsu Shitoge no Yari(Gei Boruku)?, also translated as Spear of Impaling Barbed Death) is an attack focused on a single target, created by Lancer to suit his own style, that strikes a fatal blow that always pierces the opponent's heart and ruins their body from within with its thousand iron thorns. It literally freezes the mana in the air, and it can easily be perceived as a sure-kill technique by all those around simply from being charged with magical energy. Once Gáe Bolg's name has been called, the cursed spear reverses the nature of causality, the meaning of "cause and effect" in the order of things, to make it so the cause of the "lance being thrust" comes from the effect of the "opponent's heart being pierced" by it. It determines the opponent's fate simply through its use, an always fatal move that pierces the heart with one thrust. It is also possible for him to activate it without actively striking the heart.[6] It is an attack on destiny itself, and while not a surprising fact due to its wielder's demi-god heritage, it is a top-notch power even with its seeming limitations in power due to being a step away from the Authority of the Gods.[7]

The actual action of the thrust is merely a formality, as the lance has already pierced the opponent's heart before the attack has even started. The "result" of "the heart of the opponent has been pierced" is created earlier than it is thrust, while the "cause" that "the lance has pierced through the heart" is generated later. Aside from great luck, it is a technique that determines "if it is released, the opponent is dead." Its range of effectiveness and power are weak compared to its other ability, but it has a low energy cost. Even with its nature of interfering with destiny and effect of "almost certainly will destroy the enemy's heart", the attack only utilizes magical energy in the double digits compared to a single spell from Caster costing hundreds of units of magical energy, and each activation is a sure kill, making it one of the most efficient Noble Phantasms with extraordinary usability that can be used up to seven times before Lancer must obtain more magical energy from his Master.[8]

The lance can move at impossible angles, signified by turning into a red beam of light, that always manages to reach its target. Even if he thrusts directly at the feet of the opponent, such as in the battle with Saber, it will immediately point upwards towards the heart without growing or bending and without any movement from Lancer, and if it is thrown from a distance of ten meters, or rather than truly being a throw, "Lancer's own body is fused with his soaring spear", it will manage to reach the target without fail. This action looks completely normal to onlookers, as if it were already piercing the heart, because rather than truly changing its course, it changes the means to match the result simply as an action meant to prove the fact that the heart was pierced. It can only be used against living beings, so it would have no particular effect against inanimate objects like rocks or houses.[9]

The lance curses the target upon striking them, delivering wounds that cannot be healed while Gáe Bolg still exists in the world. While Lancer mentions that even a regular thrust through his heart would be hard to heal, being struck by the Noble Phantasm gives the greatest effect. As the "lance of cause and effect", it curses them, leaving them unable to change their fate without great luck. Those who are cursed will bear the wound until they die unless Lancer is killed or the spear is destroyed. Saber is only able to heal her wound on the outside, and while she is able to fully heal a much greater wound from Berserker in a matter of hours, she is plagued by the wound delivered with Gáe Bolg for weeks afterward. Shirou is able to recover slightly with Avalon, but the wound still persists until Lancer's death. Its curse is no longer effective against him with the scabbard's protection, but it takes over half a day to heal even with its potent regenerative abilities.

The attack delivers damage equal to the opponent's own health limit plus the damage from the spear itself, so the wound will be fatal no matter the opponent once they are struck. If the target has "100 HP", the attack will deliver "the damage caused by the spear + 100."[8] This makes it especially effective against those with high durability, even those who can survive being hit by Excalibur.[10] Even someone like Arcueid Brunestud, who is very much superior in numbers compared to Lancer, would be killed as long as she wasn't saved by her luck.[11] There is a small disadvantage against Servants who can move around even without their hearts like Heracles. The wounds from its attacks are rather clean, spilling only a small amount of blood compared to a regular wound of comparable size, and while a heart would normally explode from such a strike, it instead stops working with the single strike.

It is like Tsubame Gaeshi in that the best measure against it is to not allow it to begin. Unlike Tsubame Gaeshi, which there is no way to stop it once it has been used, it is possible to find a countermeasure for Gáe Bolg once it is found out that it will go for the heart.[12] It is impossible to dodge the thrust of the lance, no matter how agile or well guarded. Even having EX Rank Agility would be useless, so the only benefit would be to allow the opponent to back out of the attack's range before it is initiated.[13] While it would normally be ineffective against Berserker's God Hand, Lancer could take at least one of his lives by using his runes to power up the rank of the lance to A to bypass God Hand's nullification ability.[14]

The only way to effectively defend against the attack is to have a high enough degree of luck as to be able to alter fate, which would be heightened by also having good reflexive instincts; Divine protection, an auto-resurrection ability, a shield that overwhelms the magical energy of the lance, or, as a countermeasure, knowing it will strike the heart, by following Archer's strategy of quickly backing out of the attack's range before it is initialized.[4] Even if the opponent manages to avoid it with Luck, as with Saber, it still leaves a heavy wound on her that takes a long time to fully heal. If it is used against someone whose death is not part of their fate (such as Scáthach herself), Gáe Bolg will not even touch them and instead will fly wildly off-course.[15]

The conceptual strength behind it is strong, so it will clash with something like Fragarach. Even if Lancer is killed and the attack is nullified by returning it to before it was activated, such as when going against Fragarach's unavoidable counterattack, the lance's curse will wind back to the moment "Gáe Bolg" was chanted in order to carry out its purpose of striking the heart. Fragarach alters the order of events, but Gae Bolg reverses cause and effect. It has already pierced the heart as the result, so even its master's death will not impede it from fulfilling its duty. The two opposing laws clashing against each other leaves both Lancer and Bazett dead afterward.

Soaring Spear that Strikes with Death[]

Gáe Bolg: Soaring Spear that Strikes with Death (突き穿つ死翔の槍(ゲイ・ボルク), Tsuki Ugatsu Shishō no Yari(Gei Boruku)?, also translated as The Spear of Striking Death Flight), which is the true use of Gáe Bolg, is the largest and most powerful attack delivered using the spear. It is the “attack that unleashes countless darts at the enemy” that is spoken of in legends. It is the attack that made him a hero which utilizes the full potential of the lance's curse, converting all of Lancer's magical energy into raw energy and releasing the accumulated power after the spear is hurled, detonating on impact with enough power to blow away a multitude of enemies.

Lancer prepares to use this ability by backing one hundred meters away from his opponent, taking a crouching position on all fours, and accelerating through an approach run by dashing fifty meters before taking to the skies. He arches his back as if drawing a bow and hurls it towards the ground with all his might. It distorts space to create a "tapestry of action" that splits into numerous spearheads that pours down over the enemy. Compared to the very little usage of magical energy with the Anti-Unit technique, this ability has an intense consumption of energy.

It does not carry the property or concept of “always pierces the opponent’s heart”, but both the power and the area of effect are increased. Rather than dispatching a single foe with absolute accuracy, its focus as a technique is to attack the enemies together with the surrounding area in a carpet bombing fashion to cause massive destruction. Due to being hurled with all of his energy, it cannot be dodged or blocked under normal circumstances. Even resilient bulwark or an agile body are not immune to its power, so Gáe Bolg will send the enemy horde flying. If it were to also have the ability to directly strike the heart, it would be closer to the level of Lugh's power as a higher level version of Fragarach.[2] The idea that Archer is capable of blocking it with Rho Aias after the spear pierces through the first six layers seems impossible to him.

The form and damage caused come close to Lugh's Brionac, but having the ability "No matter how many times it is dodged, it will strike the enemy" makes it a Noble Phantasm closer in nature to Odin's Gungnir. Archer comments that it surpasses the original Gungnir in power, and that out of all the spears he knows, it is the only one able to pierce more than one layer of Rho Aias. The spear travels at Mach 2, and the farthest he has thrown it is forty kilometers. Shirou believes that his actual range could extend to the other side of the Earth. Lancer thinks only two other people in the world, three conditionally, could beat that record.[17]

Gouging Piercing Spear of Carnage[]

Gáe Bolg: Gouging Piercing Spear of Carnage (抉り穿つ鏖殺の槍(ゲイ・ボルク), Eguri Ugatsu Ōsatsu no Yari(Gei Boruku)?) is the technique utilized by the Altered version of Cú Chulainn and his proper Noble Phantasm. The Noble Phantasm is nearly the same as "Soaring Spear that Strikes with Death" that his normally summoned counterpart has. It blows away a multitude of enemies by throwing this homing magic spear missile. By throwing the spear at such a force that would damage his own body, the attack gains power and range over one used by a normal Cú Chulainn. The spear inflicts area-of-effect instant death to the enemies, or great damage if instant death is avoided. The damage on the user's body is instantly healed by Rune Magecraft, though he still has to withstand great pain. Much like the other uses of Gáe Bolg, damage inflicted by this move is difficult to heal.[18][19]

Whereas Scáthach waits until the destruction ends to begin regenerating herself, Cú Chulainn Alter repairs it as he throws his spear, enduring the immense pain. Its power is equal to that of Scáthach's Gáe Bolg Alternative, as seen during their fight. Both spears claim to deliver fatal blows, while at the same time evading them. With different Noble Phantasms, the clash would have ended in both of them dead, not a draw. However, because both their Noble Phantasms are forbidden magical spears, both thorns of death trace identical paths and clash. A curious phenomenon that may never occur again.[20] In his first fight against Rama, Cú used this attack to counter-attack after Rama used his Brahmastra at full power. It managed to destroy 80% of Rama's heart in a single shot.[21] He also used this Noble Phantasm to sneak attack Karna while he was fighting Arjuna, mortally wounding him in the process.[22]

Piercing Crimson Lance[]

English | Japanese

« So, shall I do it?"
"Pierce, gouge, hit through!"
"Gáe Bolg! »

Gáe Bolg: Piercing Crimson Lance (穿ちの朱槍(ゲイ・ボルク), Ugachi no Shusō(Gei Boruku)?) is the spear of Proto Lancer. To differentiate from the Gáe Bolg in "stay night", Hanafuda calls the spear Gáe Bolg Origin (ゲイボルグ・オリジン, Gei Borugu Orijin?). It has two kind of attack methods; the Anti-Unit thrusting and the Anti-Army throwing.[23][24] Even though it is not being sealed, for some reason, Cú Chulainn is not employing this when performing regular attacks. He wields this scarlet spear and fully releases its True Name only as a "last resort", when he is convinced that he can finish off the target.[23]

    User: Lancer
The demonic spear used by Lancer. It is a cursed spear with an ominous design. It will unerringly pierce an opponent’s heart, and can annihilate dozens of people with a single throw.
In Celtic mythology, it is the legendary demonic spear possessed by the demigod Cú Chulainn. Because of its huge size for a throwing weapon, nobody except Cú Chulainn was powerful enough to wield it. In some stories, the spear is thrown from the fork of the toes in order to increase its power. The name of this throwing technique is also “Gáe Bolg”.
It is said that it would scatter into countless arrowheads when thrown, wiping out multiple opponents in a single throw. The name Gáe Bolg derives from “ga bool’ga” (serrated throwing weapon), which evokes images of lightning.

  3. Brionac explanation
Lugh's spear is normally either AreadbharWP, Gae AssailWP, or the spear LúinWP, but according to the corresponding Japanese Wikipedia page for the latter, BrionacWP was the name of Lugh's spear ; that spear is described in the Japanese Dictionary of Magic Tools (魔導具事典, Madōgu Jiten?) as having its tip split in five, and the light shot from each spear point could kill five enemies at once. It also says this is the spear that was used with a sling to pierce Balor's mystic eye (though other versions say this was done with a tathlum, a large forged rock projectile thrown with a sling). The spear Lúin was found in that same battle, leading to the association of Brionac to the spear Lúin. It appears "Brionac" is the name in Japanese only of the spear from the city of Gorias, one of the Four Jewels of the Tuatha Dé Danann (that spear is usually unnamed in known surviving Celtic literature). Other Japanese literary sources for the name can be found listed in here.

Once Ireland was called Erin, which means "green" in Gaelic. In this land named after its abundant greenery, there was a boy with great talent. His name was Sétanta. It is said that his father was the sun god Lugh and his mother was royalty. One day, he accidentally killed the guard dog protecting the house of master blacksmith Culann. Sétanta alone strangled to death "Culann's savage dog" that was well-known to have the strength of ten men. In order to compensate for this deed, for a while he himself would carry out the duties of a guard dog. Consequently, all began to call the boy "Culann's savage dog" i.e. Cú Chulainn.

In time, the grown Cú Chulainn was accepted as a member of the famous Akaeda Knights. His actions after that rendered him unmatched. He went to the "Land of Shadows" to fulfill his own love; there with incredible magic and unrivaled demonic spearmanship, he acquired Gáe Bolg. Cú Chulainn had become invincible but the sun still set. At a young age, a close Druid's prophecy said "in exchange for glorious deeds of valor, his life would be short" and accepting such a fate, he smiled and laughed.

In his final battle Cú Chulainn battled furiously and died pierced by his own magical spear. A crow landed on the shoulder of his standing corpse in his death. It is said that it was the incarnation of the witch Morrigan who continued to give him her unrequited love.

Naturally by his own beliefs, he prefers to fight with his full power as a warrior. However, due to the Command Spell of his Master Kotomine "Fight with everyone, then withdraw," he was commanded to involuntarily perform reconnaissance missions. Even in the middle of his first battle with EMIYA, he showed decisive action by leaving the battle to kill Emiya Shirou whom he recognized to have witnessed it. The withdrawal was also very skilled, giving the appearance of realizing that the situation was unfavorable. Contrary to his legendary battle prowess, Cú Chulainn's fighting in the Fifth Holy Grail War was extremely limited.

    Class Abilities
    Magic Resistance: C
Cú Chulainn holds a Magic Resistance of Rank C. Aria of two verses and below are cancelled, but beyond that High Thaumaturgy and Greater Rituals cannot even be defended against. That said, confronting a Servant of his superior speed (Agility A), finding the opportunity to use large-scale magecraft is next to impossible. Also, considerable skill is required to successfully "hit" him with the invoked magecraft. Judging from these factors, in situations of close combat, Cú Chulainn may have a "necessary and sufficient" rank of Magic Resistance.

In addition, as depicted in legend, he himself learned magecraft (18 Original Runes) in the "Land of Shadows", taking pride in having the skill and knowledge to qualify for Caster class. Even in a scene of the story, he sees through the presence of Medusa's Blood Fort Andromeda at a glance, considers the situation, and makes the decision not to destroy it. Cú Chulainn is not just a reckless warrior.

    Personal Abilities
    Battle Continuation: A
Legend tells that the dying Cú Chulainn tied himself to a tree before taking his last breath. For he who possesses such a legend, the dying struggle is particularly fierce. Even in a hopeless battle, Cú Chulainn was still able to demonstrate astonishing tenacity, delaying Gilgamesh for half a day.
Against Emiya who dextrously fended off his spear thrusts, Cú Chulainn countered with an unyielding fighting spirit.

    Disengage: C
The ability to withdraw from the battlefield in the midst of combat. Having been commanded to go on reconnaissance missions by his Master Kotomine, it can be said that this ability was fully demonstrated. From the start, Cú Chulainn excelled in seeing through battle situations, and had the responsibility to wage war and withdraw repeatedly from all the Servants.

    Runes: B
Cú Chulainn obtained 18 Runes from his studies with Scáthach (Norse Runes), appropriately using them to respond in different situations. It is said that among these runes, one with the purpose of searching existed. It was the ability that supported his elusive actions during the Holy Grail War.

    Protection from Arrows: B
Ability to deal with projectiles. This is a power Cu Chulainn was born with. It's said that it's possible for him to avoid any long range attack if he has made visual confirmation of his opponent. He can deal with most projectiles even in conditions where the opponent cannot be visually seen. Even if the battle with Hasan Sabbaha, he cancelled the throwing swords hurled from the darkness. As long as the attack is a thrown type, he can avoid even Noble Phantasms, but he can't gain the effects of this protection with respect to wide range attack types where the attack range of the weapon explodes on impact, or a direct attack by a weapon that has simply long reach.

    Divinity: B
The circumstances behind Cú Chulainn's great divinity is his father's existence. His father was Lugh, the god who governed over the sun, a member of the Danann divine family in Celtic Mythology. As a demigod whose father was an almighty god who possessed every skill such as knowledge, techniques and magic, and whose mother was Deichtine, younger sister of King Conchobar, he exhibited superior talent from birth. Boasting supernatural ability that separated him from ordinary people from a young age, in his training in the Land of Shadows, he received the original runes and terrible magic spear Gaé Bolg from Scáthach. Truly, he was a man predestined to become a hero. In Ireland, poetry and statues praising Cú Chulainn still remain to this day.

    Noble Phantasm
Gáe Bolg: Spear of Piercing Barbed Death
    Rank: B
    Type: Anti-Unit
    Range: 2~4
    Maximum targets: 1

While this is a technique employing Gáe Bolg as a melee attack, it is originally a magic spear for throwing. With a technique that reverses the meaning of "cause and effect" in the order of things, the "result" that "the heart of the opponent has been pierced" is created earlier than the moment it is thrust. Accordingly, the "cause" that "the lance has pierced through the heart" is generated from it later. Without a great deal of luck (like Artoria), it can be said that this is a technique that determines "if it is released, the opponent is dead." However, against Servants like Heracles who can move even when their heart is destroyed, there is a small disadvantage. Compared to the Spear of Striking Death Flight, both the range of effectiveness and the destructive power are weakened. However, it is worth mentioning that "the magical energy cost is low." For having such a strong effect as "almost certainly will destroy the enemy's heart," without the need of a terrible amount of magical power, it becomes an excellent Noble Phantasm of extraordinary usability.

    Gae Bolg: Striking Death Flight
    Rank: B+
    Type: Anti-Army
    Range: 5~40
    Maximum Targets: 50 People

The largest and most powerful attack delivered using Gae Bolg. The “attack that unleashes countless darts at the enemy” which legends speak of is Gae Bolg – Striking Death Flight. After accelerating through an approach run, Cú Chulainn takes to the skies and activates Striking Death Flight by hurling it towards the ground with all his might.
Different from Gae Bolg – Piercing Death Thorn, Striking Death Flight does not carry the property or concept of “always pierces the opponent’s heart”, but compared to Piercing Death Thorn, both power and area of effect are increased (intense consumption of Magic Energy). It is a technique that attacks the enemies together with the surrounding area, in a carpet bombing fashion. Even resilient bulwark or agile body are not immune to the power of Striking Death Flight; Gae Bolg will send the enemy horde flying. In legend, the demonic spear is said to split into 30 and pour down over the enemy, but it seems the number has increased after Cú Chulainn became a Heroic Spirit. During the battle with Emiya, Emiya spoke of Striking Death Flight “exceeding the original, Gungnir – Declaration of the Great God”.

    Lancer’s anti-personnel noble phantasm.
A cursed crimson spear with the infamous reputation of always going through the heart when thrust.
What it actually does is reversing causality, the spear being thrust after the outcome of striking the heart is established.
When its true power is invoked with its true name, Lancer’s crimson spear gains the outcome of already striking the heart before being thrust.
It didn’t hit because it was thrust, it hit so it was thrust, an attack on destiny itself.
What is needed to dodge Gae Bolg isn’t high agility but the power to reverse fate before the activation of Gae Bolg: high luck.
While it’s strictly anti-personnel and specifically targeting the heart, it’s a top-notch power that decides fate. It’s a noble phantasm a step away from being an authority, but it's no surprise that it is for its welder Cu Chulainn is the child of a god.

Barbed Spear that Pierces with Death [Noble Phantasm]
    Gae Bolg.
The cursed spear that always pierced the opponent's heart after being thrust.
Reverse causality --- a technique which broke the rules by launching the spear after it was already established that the heart was pierced.
Since the target was already hit by the spear, the opponent would always be hit regardless what kind of evasive maneuvers he took.
In order to evade Gae Bolg, one would require Noble Phantasms that automatically resurrected the target after death like that of Berserker's, or a high degree of Luck sufficient to negate the curse of the spear.
To put it into game terms, it would be an insane Noble Phantasm with a base damage plus an additional component that scaled with the target's HP.
For example, if Saber's HP was 100, then Gae Bolg's damage would be (Spear Damage + 100). She would absolutely be dead if it hit.
It was also an efficient Noble Phantasm with mana consumption only in the double digits.
Anti-Unit Noble Phantasms probably did not get anymore economical than this.
By the way, Piercing Death Thorn was a technique Lancer developed himself.
Originally Gae Bolg was a thrown Noble Phantasm. It was an Anti-Army Noble Phantasm rather than Anti-Unit.

Q: Who'd win if the Servants and the 27 Ancestors fought each other? Also, who'd win in a fight between Bazett, a renowned powerhouse of the Association, and Ciel, top class in even the Association?

A: Depends on compatibility, but basically Servants will have the slightly higher advantage. With Saber, Lancer, and Archer classes, we ought to be able to relax and see decent fights. In particular, Saber has THAT sort of Noble Phantasms so against guys like the 27 Ancestors that overwhelm by material quantity and alienness, she'd be REALLY tough.
....Well, there are also some of those tough Ancestors that can withstand a direct hit from Excalibur-class attacks, but against those guys that just (emphasis on just; other stats don't match up) have wickedly high HP, Lancer-aniki'd be pretty tough.

    Q. I have a question about the Servants vs. other character answer in the 9th issue of Comptiq. About a Servant with an average Noble Phantasm, who would have one and what rank would that have been?

A: That's a serious question. The level of the Noble Phantasm would be B, and ability being represented by numbers would be called an average Noble Phantasm. Broken Phantasm, Barrier of the Wind King (C), Gae Bolg (thrown) (B), that sort.
On the other hand, those with conceptual effects, destiny interference types fall into a special category. With Gae Bolg (regular), no matter how much Arcueid might be superior to Lancer in numbers, she will be killed depending on her luck, you see.

  12. Fate/stay night - Unlimited Blade Works route - Day 6: Absence of Saber

"Like Lancer's Gae Bolg, Assassin's Tsubame Gaeshi is something that can not be allowed to begin. No, unlike Gae Bolg, that allows you to find a countermeasure once you find out it will go for the heart, there are no possible counters for Assassin's secret technique even when you know about it."

Nasu Kinoko & Takeuchi Takashi • Character Discussion

    >The catalyst for Lancer's birth

Nasu: As with Berserker, Lancer's concept did not change much from old "Fate".

Takeuchi: I feel like Lancer was more tragic in old "Fate"... though I suppose he was quite tragic in this one as well.

Nasu: In old "Fate", Lancer had a Master who was more like Rin, so his role as the rival was a bit easier to grasp.

Takeuchi: Old "Fate" didn't have a character like Archer (Emiya), so Lancer filled the rival role instead. In old "Fate", Lancer was basically used as a gopher by a high-maintenance girl. I guess you could say he's had bad luck with women since those days.

    Nasu: True enough.

Takeuchi: Who was Cu Chulainn's Master?

Nasu: He trained under Scathach, known for being as cool-headed and beautiful as she was aloof. She definitely didn't coddle him. By persistently challenging her to a fight, Cu Chulainn earned his place as her apprentice and was granted the use of Gae Bolg.

Takeuchi: I believe his Master in old "Fate" was based on Scathach. She left an impression on me because I felt bad for Cu Chulainn finding himself under the influence of another woman like that, even after death.

    >Regarding Lancer's character design

Takeuchi: As Nasu mentioned earlier, Lancer's design concept hasn't changed much since the early days. His face in particular remains quite familiar.

Nasu: Especially his hairstyle, slicked back bangs hanging loose, and a ponytail.

Takeuchi: When I was designing Lancer's outfit, I asked Nasu about his concept and thought a bodysuit would go well with his character.

Nasu: Yeah, I think I asked for a bodysuit reminiscent of "Vampire Hunter D".

Takeuchi: I took that direction and ran with it. The final design does have a touch of sci-fi flavour to it, but my initial drafts were even more sci-fi.

Nasu: We had to tone down that sci-fi aspect to make him fit in better with the other characters. We couldn't have "Space Lancer 2004" running around.(laughs) Now that I think about it, Lancer's not the only blue character.

Takeuchi: Yeah, Saber's blue too... Why did we make Lancer blue, then?

Nasu: Blue's really the only colour that suits his concept, don't you think?

Takeuchi: Come to think about it, I've never seen a non-blue variation of Lancer. I guess it was also because he was clearly positioned as Archer's rival.

Nasu: The ancient rivalry between red and blue... As a side note, Gae Bolg was Lancer's Noble Phantasm in old "Fate" as well. When I was coming up with the abilities for it, I thought the notion of a battle between the "rules" laid out by Noble Phantasms would be a new and fun idea.

Takeuchi: Though it didn't work on Saber. (laughs)

Nasu: Haha, yeah. The sure-kill spear that didn't kill. That's the good old Gae Bolg for you. But that was the stage at which I figured out the true direction of "Fate". It wouldn't be about values and numbers, but a battle between concepts.

    >The Noble Phantasm Gae Bolg

Nasu: A weapon that strikes with guaranteed fatal blows sounds like a total cheat, but I guess it doesn't sound as bad now since we were just talking about Berserker earlier. (laughs)

Takeuchi: Are there any limitations to the use of Gae Bolg, or is the True Name the only requirement?

Nasu: The Noble Phantasm will activate if Lancer is within spear-striking distance of his opponent. If his opponent has a high luck stat, the attack can still miss, though that is quite rare.

Takeuchi: So luck is the only way to dodge it?

Nasu: Yeah, I'd say so. Even if your agility was EX level, it wouldn't matter. The only reason why Saber survived Gae Bolg's strike was because her luck stat was high.

Takeuchi: I guess her precog ability helped too.

Nasu: I like to call it intuition. Add to that her B-level luck, and she was able to avoid fatal injury even though she still couldn't dodge the attack completely.

Takeuchi: Do you think it would hit Archer?

Nasu: Without a doubt. Archer knows that too, which is why he stays as far away from Lancer as possible. If Lancer ever got that look in his eyes and took the stance, Archer would backpedal like his life depended on it, because it would.

Takeuchi: I see... well, they do say discretion is the better part of valor. What about throwing Gae Bolg?

Nasu: Gae Bolg: Soaring Spear that Strikes with Death is purely destructive power.

Takeuchi: I guess it would be too much if Gae Bolg could strike the target's heart without fail when thrown as well.

Nasu: That would be an ability worthy of Lugh, Lancer's father... it might even be more powerful that Fragarach.

Takeuchi: Eternal Force Blizzard! Instant death. Something like that, right?

Nasu: Sounds about right. The legendary battles of ancient mythology were quite literally played out in god mode, after all.

    >The message Lancer carries as a character

Nasu: I imagine most of us want to feel like we've lived a good life. That thought was at the forefront of my mind when I was writing for Lancer. In "hollow" he has a line where he questions the necessity of hating one's enemy. I feel like that sentiment sums up Lancer's personality. I guess you could say it's my version of the manga "Haguregumo", just not as... unique. (laughs)

    Takeuchi: Or even Josuke Higashikata.

    Nasu: I don't know... Josuke's a bit silly.

Takeuchi: What about Juuza of the Clouds, then?

Nasu: Juuza is supposed to be like the clouds, but in reality he's totally paralyzed. He's just forever dragging his feelings for Yuria around.

Takeuchi: His death was admirable, though.

Nasu: To elaborate further on Lancer, he's always been portrayed as a slender warrior. The design concept for him was a panther, with tight groupings of solid muscles.

Takeuchi: I always imagined Lancer with softer eyes, which may be why I always drew him with slightly heavy eyes that were angled downward. But then I saw that other artists always drew Lancer with extremely sharp eyes. I would never have realised my mistake if I hadn't noticed that.

    Nasu: ...You're terrible (laughs)

Takeuchi: Yeah, I angled Lancer's eyes down for "Zero" before I checked the main game and remembered that his eyes were in fact angled skyward.

Nasu: Lancer's a truly hopeless character, isn't he? I mean, he died in an accident in Sakura's route... (laughs)

Takeuchi: How did he meet his end in Saber's route?

Nasu: He was defeated by Gil in the church basement. We didn't elaborate on this in the game, but Lancer was actually battling against Gil for half a day before he lost, so I think it's safe to say that Gil sustained some serious injuries in that encounter.

Takeuchi: I doubt many of the people who played the game spent much time thinking about that particular fight.

Nasu: Cu Chulainn is probably one of the top two greatest heroes in Irish Mythology. This may seem contrary to what I was saying about Berserker, but Lancer's agility and combat experience are enough to keep him alive even without some overwhelming super ability. Lancer is definitely a character based on the survivor archetype.

Takeuchi: Regardless of concept, as far as the story is concerned, Lancer was basically the bait in a giant dog fighting ring. Even the thrown Bolg was just there to make Aegis seem more impressive.

Nasu: Hey! Are you dissing Lancer!?

Takeuchi: I just think he was a very unfortunate character, all things considered. But I guess that's why the impression he left on me was something akin to clouds.

    Q. Lancer, Caster, Assassin, and True Assassins; all with normal attack and Noble Phantasms of B or lower. If they fought against Berserker, wouldn't it be a one-sided fight? Or are there any of them that can match up against him?

A: Assassin and True Assassin by themselves wouldn't even be a fight. Lancer can use his runes and Noble Phantasm together to temporarily raise the rank to A, but it'd still be a very disadvantageous fight but "one with some chances". Caster has two front-line Saber-class defenders, so if she uses her high sorcery then she'd be able to deal damage, but that would be limited to 2 to 3 times. Also, in the game, Assassin was able to push Berserker back because of the terrain advantage and support from Caster (weighing down Berserker's body). ...Well, since the compatibility of Assassin and Berserker is horrible, the fact that Berserker was even pushed back is enough to say "whoah, Kojirou's amazing".

The legendary warrior of the Ulster Cycle of Celtic mythology. A member of the Red Branch Knights and the strongest fighter of Ulster, he won his fame with his mastery of the invincible spear techniques taught to him by Scáthach, the ruler of the alternate realm called the Land of Shadows.
He has unusually taken form as a Berserker. Some factor of his summoning also caused all of his equipment to change and reversed his temperament. His expressions become cold, and the crimson demonic spear that is his Noble Phantasm has been mixed with darkness, overflowing with a foreboding aura.

    Height: 185 cm
    Weight: 72 kg

    Frenzy of the Faeries: A

The roar of Cú Chulainn awakens the spirits sleeping within the earth and crushes the will of enemy forces.
This mental interference causes a temporary decrease in STR and AGI in all enemies.

    Level 3 Bond
The altered and twisted form of Cú Chulainn, summoned by Queen Medb's wish.
He reigned as the Mad King and brought chaos upon the land of America.

This is not what his berserker form is supposed to be in life, nor how he is supposed to be when summoned as a Berserker.
When receiving the backup from the Holy Grail, his power surpasses his Lancer or Caster form.

    Level 4 Bond
Gouging Piercing Spear of Carnage — Gáe Bolg
    Rank: B++
    Type: Anti-army Noble Phantasm
    Range: 5-50
    Maximum Targets: 100

The homing demonic missile that is the proper Noble Phantasm of Cú Chulainn,
In his Alter form, it has increased power and effective range as he throws with such utmost strength that he breaks apart his own body.
This attack causes instant death in all enemy targets, in addition to dealing great damage if that does not take effect.
(By use of his Runes, he regenerates his flesh as he is throwing so he does not take any physical damage – though this does nothing for the enormous pain that he suffers.)

    Level 5 Bond
Grinding Crunching Beast of Death Tusks — Curruid Coinchenn
    Rank: A
    Type: Anti-unit Noble Phantasm (Self)
    Range: –
    Maximum Targets: 1

The storm of Cú Chulainn's rage wraps around him like armour and temporarily takes form as the exoskeleton of the Curruid, the monster of the crimson sea, from which the demonic spear Gáe Bolg was made. Wearing this offensive armour raises his CON and also grants him EX rank STR.
While this Noble Phantasm is active, he cannot use Gouging Piercing Spear of Carnage.

A Disaster-Class enemy found in Chapter Five.
At this point, since you are the main character, you might as well summon a certain Archer wearing a Mythological Mystic Code, and have the two of them fight in a mysterious space until the end of time.
    So, how about it?

    Type: Anti-Unit

A peerless great hero from the Celtic, Ulster mythology.
The "Child of Light" that received the blood of the sun god Lugh, his alias is hound of Culann. He is sort of the same person as the Lancer that is summoned with identical True Name, but - in both mind and body - he is somewhat more youthful than "that one".

    Level 1 Bond
    Height/Weight: 184cm・71kg
    Source: Celtic mythology
    Region: Europe
    Alignment: Lawful Neutral Gender: Male
Has mastered Rune magecraft in the same way as "that one".

    Level 2 Bond
A rough-looking pleasant man. Does not speak about "which is better" between justice and villainy, but his nature has a tendency towards justice. Not enough of an adult to understand things such the world's unreasonableness, the equal value of good and evil.
He is also a beast-master. In particular, compatibility with dogs is excellent.

    Level 3 Bond
Compared with the Lancer that is summoned with the same True Name, he is equipped with a heavy armor. And yet, the AGI parameter is A+, which exceeds "that one". One might think that this is not a difference in the performance of the body, but that the youthful mentality of pitching forward has lead to some sort of difference.

    Level 4 Bond
    "Piercing Scarlet Spear"
    Rank: B/B+
    Type: Anti-Unit/Anti-Army
Gáe Bolg. A spear of reversal of causality.
A scarlet spear - and spearmanship - received from his mentor Scáthach.
It has two kind of attack methods; the anti-unit thrusting and the anti-army throwing.

    Level 5 Bond
His feelings, thoughts towards his mentor Scáthach somewhat comprise a greater part of his heart than "that one". It is unknown if this is due to youth, or due to season.
Evidently, he is still unable to accept the world's unreasonableness, the equal value of good and evil--

He will probably think favorably of the Master who is facing the challenge of restoring human history, and should have no reservations about lending his strength.
But one must be careful. He is not bound to have the same reactions as "that" Lancer with the same True Name!
