Gilles de Rais (ジル・ド・レェWP, Jiru do Rei?), Class Name Caster (キャスター, Kyasutā?), is the Caster-class Servant of Ryuunosuke Uryuu in the Fourth Holy Grail War of Fate/Zero. He is one of the Servants of Ritsuka Fujimaru of the Grand Orders conflicts of Fate/Grand Order.

Profile[]

Identity[]

The version whose notoriety as "BluebeardWP" (青髭WP, Aohige?) normally overwhelms his heroic aspect. [4][5][6] He was a French nobleman, ranked as a baron, and member of the military during the 15th century.[4][5][6] He had a vast fortune, buying up many works of art, and it seemed to many that it would never deplete.[5] His apex land holdings eventually exceeded those held by the Duke of BrittanyWP and could be regarded as a threat to the king.[7] He became a national hero during the Hundred Years WarWP while serving under the Jeanne d'Arc after helping to recapture OrleansWP, and he was given the highest honor with the title of Marshal of FranceWP.[5] Both were present at the coronation ceremony of King CharlesWP, decorated as saviors and national heroes, and it became a memory that forever encapsulated his glory that even his corruption could not overwhelm.[8] Gilles viewed Jeanne as the basis for everything to him, his sole salvation and the proof that God existed, so his pious heart fell into despair after Jeanne was executed as a heretic.[4][5]

Gilles before his execution ("The Execution of Gilles de Rais")

Gilles wasted his seemingly endless fortune extremely quickly to the point where his public finances were almost entirely depleted, so he started to get involved with alchemy with his friend François Prelati, a cleric, to make up for the financial burdens.[4][5][7] As he went into madness over the loss of Joan, he began to perform cruel deeds to prove that God is absent because he should punish such actions, losing sight of his monetary problems in dabbling in alchemy and instead concentrating on the aspect of the black magic of summoning demons.[4] François was the primary magus in charge of the rituals, Gilles having no true knowledge of the craft and only acting as a patron.[7] He started to abduct young boys from the area of his domain, raping and slaughtering them by the hundreds, which eventually made him the model for fairy tale "Bluebeard."[4][6]

Despite the atrocities, others only feared that he would sell his domains to an enemy nation for the purpose of raising money, so they convicted and executed him for his blasphemy and cruel deeds only for the political pretenses of seizing his territory in 1440.[4] Due to the nobles of the era disregarding the human rights of commoners, they felt the populations of their territories were no more than disposable livestock. They equated their slaughter to no more than animal abuse and would not have even dealt with Gilles had his land holdings not been so large and had he not been so recently wasteful.[7] It could be said he who "couldn't help but hold suspicions against God exactly because he extolled God too much and infatuated himself with scornfully cursing God" was "finally destroyed without being judged by God."[4]

Appearance[]

A young face without a single crease yet.[9] He has huge, rolling eyes and oily, glistening cheeks. Because he was originally a knight, he has a muscular build and is a very tall individual.[10] Along with the deathly pallor of his face, he reminded Ryuunosuke of a painting from Munch.[9] Those abnormally big eyes easily remind one of nocturnal animals.[6]

His garments too were quite odd and were definitely queer.[9] A luxurious robe of ancient design; sanguineous scarlet patterns adorned the pitch-black fabric.[6] He donned an inky black cassock, and an evil aura reeled about it. Also, the patterns dyed crimson red on the cloth was as if stained with blood.[11] His figure, tall enough to reach the clouds, was wrapped in a much-folded robe, decorated with luxurious latches made of precious metals; his whole style looks exactly like some "evil magician" from a manga. When silent, his features would look dreadful like the face of a corpse, but when smiling without any apparent maliciousness, he would seem as pure as a saint.[9] He has a cracks on one of his hands. He usually has a look of scorn on his face, unless he's having fun torturing and killing people.

In Fate/EXTELLA LINK, he has the following costumes:

  • Robes of Resentment (怨嗟のローブ?)
  • Phantom Punk (ファントム・パンク?)
  • Heretic Acolyte Garb (魔道の神官服?) (DLC)

Personality[]

Caster is a troubled person, having lost the woman he admired.[2] Like his Master, he is almost devoid of any morality, and wishes to use the Holy Grail to revive his lost love until he meets Artoria. Caster initially expresses an interest in Artoria, appearing to be familiar with how she came to ruin at the end of her life. In truth, it is because he has mistaken her for Jeanne d'Arc, whom he had been infatuated with when alive. Even after Artoria reveals her true identity, Caster continues to delude himself, believing that her memories were warped by the trauma of her death. He even makes plans to capture Artoria and force her to remember her 'true' past.

He enjoys offering his victims brief moments of respite, or even the hope of release or escape, before inflicting death through gruesome and horrific means. According to Caster, allowing his victims' hope will amplify the despair and terror upon their moment of death, a fact that he revels in.

Relationships[]

Jeanne d'Arc
"Oooohhhhhb! My Master, you are godlike! No, you must very much be God Himself! You have done well to bring her here before me!"[12]
"■■■■■■■■!!!!!"
(※ He’s so overcome with emotion that it’s indecipherable)[13]
Artoria Pendragon (Saber)
"Alas, we meet again Jeanne incarnate! Let us celebrate by consuming the evils of the sea."[12]
"Huum... Compared with Jeanne herself like this, hohoho... The volume was overwhelmingly different... I am sorry for this... This was a cruel misunderstanding that exceeds the Lord’s indifference... I apologize from the bottom of my heart. Oh? Why are you readying your Holy Sword? From overhead? To a low position?"[13]
Abigail Williams
"What a thing... This is, the smell of the abyss...!"[13]
Nero Claudius / Mordred
"No, this will not do... Not just any blond knight maiden will do... You need to be far more clean, pretty, honest, and pure... More, how should I put it..."[12]

Role[]

Fate/Zero[]

Caster was summoned shortly before the Fourth Holy Grail War began. His Master was Ryuunosuke Uryuu, a serial killer who unwittingly performed a successful summoning ritual using the blood of a murdered family. Ryuunosuke lacked a catalyst so the Grail chose a servant with the closest personality to Ryuunosuke. He first introduces himself to his Master as Bluebeard.

It soon comes to the attention of Risei Kotomine, the Holy Grail War's regulator, that Caster is kidnapping children throughout Fuyuki (for use in his spells and for his Master's amusement), and that he and Uryū lack the discretion practiced by the other Master-Servant pairs. Fearing their actions might compromise Tokiomi Tohsaka's chances of winning the War, Risei suspends all fighting and offers a reward of extra Command Spells to the Master who dispatches Caster and Uryuu.

Using the captured children as hostages, Caster draws Saber out and traps her in battle with his seemingly infinite army of summoned monsters. He is defeated when Lancer intervenes, breaking through the monster horde with Saber's aid, and using Gáe Dearg to disable Prelati's Spellbook and dispel the summoned creatures. An enraged Caster then retreats.

When Caster and Ryuunosuke returned to their lair, they found that their work was destroyed by others. While Ryuunosuke cries, Caster comforts him but to his surprise Ryuunosuke claims that God punished them for having too much fun. Caster is surprised though, when he's asked about the existence of God, as he didn't believe his master to be spiritual. Ryuunosuke then shares his philosophy that God must be somewhat malicious to make the world with them in it, as he believes that God likely enjoys displays of violence, gore and evil actions. This firmly wins Caster over, as he hails Ryuunosuke as a brilliant philosopher and they resolve to perform a grand spectacle to amuse God.

Caster and along with his monster are killed by Saber

Caster along with his monster are destroyed by Saber.

In his second bid to capture Saber, Caster merges a horde of his monsters into an immense, Lovecraftian beast, with himself at its centre. Despite its vast strength and regenerative powers, it is ultimately defeated by Saber, who incinerates the beast with her anti-fortress Noble Phantasm, Excalibur. The light from Excalibur's blast causes Caster to recall memories from his past, before he began his forays into murder and the occult, back when he still served alongside Jeanne d'Arc. This evokes tears and a measure of regret in Caster, moments before he is destroyed along with his monster. He was the second servant to die in the Fourth Grail War.

Einzbern Consultation Room[]

Caster gave Irisviel von Einzbern a mask of himself to her, saying it is not much as a present. Irisviel describes him as a polite gentlemen with glistening eyes. Caster pops up in the Einzbern Consultation Room and shocks Zecchan, Zecchan calls him a fish monster. Caster calls Zecchan a cute, adorable girl and asked if she wants to be sacrifice or tortured. He couldn't help himself from pulling a Cyrano de BergeracWP upon feeling her throbbing flesh. He misses his conversation with Ryuunosuke as they could speak all night long about perspective of art.

His happiness was perfect as the Holy Grail War was filled with everything he ever wanted from the beginning to the end. He was content that he made a friend who understood him. He found hope when he recalls the light of Excalibur in his final moments. While Caster doesn't have any regrets but he does have a question that made him linger before merging with the Greater Grail. Caster says he cannot help but think how he was saved yet Jeanne was not. He shouted out that she was betrayed by God and the people. He wonders if she is suffering eternal pain from burning in the inferno by those in power. He decided that he cannot leave and is determined to return to the Holy Grail War to save her.

Irisviel unexpectedly pokes him in the eye to calm himself down and Caster recalls the past when Jeanne poked his bulging eyes. Irisviel tells Caster that she was saved and was acknowledged as a Saint and became a famous idol in all media. Irisviel hands over a bandanna with the Jeannite★President (ジャンヌナイト★団長, Jan'nunaito★Danchō?) imprinted on it. Caster becomes the number one fan and the president of Joan's fan club group. Before he leaves, he thanks Zecchan and Irisviel and promises to reunite with Joan.

Fate/Apocrypha[]

Fate apocrypha - Gilles

Gilles killing children in front of Ruler.

After Caster of Red shows Ruler illusions of her past through the use of First Folio, Caster changes to a different scene, a scene after her execution in her lifetime and therefore story. Caster of Red changes the scene to Gilles's castle, a scene which caused Ruler to think weird. Caster of Red shows Ruler with visions of Gilles de Rais's tale. Caster of Red changes his method and summons Gilles de Rais via his Noble Phantasm and the support of Hanging Gardens of Babylon and Assassin of Red, Caster of Red takes the soul of Gilles and given him a body. Ruler witnessed Gilles killing children but says it is just a hallucination. Caster of Red corrects Ruler saying it is actually real, Gilles is seen gripping onto a boy with silver hair. Gilles talks about how this happened to him because she abandoned him. After witnessing the atrocities Gilles had committed, Ruler started to break down. Gilles tell her that she's a saint who tried to treat everyone equally, even Pierre CauchonWP. Gilles pointed out that she was not honest about her feelings for Sieg, Ruler denies it and says she only assisted him because he needed help. Gilles then says that Assassin of Black needed help and she killed her. He then adds that how it is obvious she loves him, that her universal love for humanity is just a lie. Ruler says that she doesn't love him because she doesn't have the right to love. After all she is the Maid of Orleans, Jeanne La Pucelle.

Caster of Red and Gilles both claps and tells her, she has done a good job. Caster of Red cancels the illusion and took her out so Shirou Kotomine could talk to her. However Gilles is still in the real world as well. They tell her that Sieg died fighting against Lancer of Red. Ruler uses her presence detection to confirm and finds that Saber of Black is gone. She starts crying saying because she got him into this mess she was really the one who killed him. Shirou comes in and talks about how he wants to give everyone Third Magic so they won't end up like Gilles who changed because she died. To prove that point Gilles changes into his form from Fate/Zero. Gilles talks about how the children can't be saved so he has to atone by saving the world.

Then Ruler and Gilles have a debate about saving the world. Ruler manages to convince Gilles to repent and aid her. However she has complete belief in him anyway. Gilles doesn't have a status as Ruler saw him with her True Name Discernment skill. Physically he's weaker than a Caster-Class servant and he's weaker than his counterpart in the Fourth Holy Grail War. Ruler gives Gilles her Flag to protect Sieg while she's casting her La Pucelle. Gilles uses this to protect both Ruler and Sieg against Shirou's meteors.

Fate/Grand Order[]

First Singularity: Orleans[]

After being summoned into the era, Gilles attempts to use the Holy Grail to resurrect Jeanne but to avail. Instead, he creates Jeanne Alter, a version of Jeanne twisted by his hatred for France and God. After Jeanne Alter summons her Servants, Gilles brings Pierre Cauchon to her. She burns Pierre alive until nothing is left when he begs for his life. Gilles asks her what they should do with remaining clergy, to which she orders her Servants to kill them along with the rest of France. Praising her, Gilles decides to help her again as her general. He suggests they need to a symbol for them to rally under, to which Jeanne Alter suggest a dragon due to her connection with them now. He tells her that her vengeance is righteous for one who was praised only to be later discarded.

During their campaign, Jeanne Alter’s forces conquer Orleans, kill many people including King Charles VII, and destroy many towns including Lyon after defeating its protector, Siegfried.

Following Martha’s demise, Jeanne Alter orders Gilles to contact Carmilla. She asks him who he considers to be the real Jeanne, to which he answers it’s her. He describes their campaign as way of denying God, blaming Him for Jeanne’s tragic end. He tells Jeanne Alter not to stress herself out, claiming her destructive campaign is divine punishment and righteous vengeance.

He later treats Charles-Henri Sanson when Jeanne Alter returns from killing Marie Antoinette. He informs her that Sanson’s mind perished along Marie, saying they can only use him as a foot soldier now. After learning from Chevalier d'Eon that Ritsuka’s party is preparing an assault, Jeanne Alter orders Gilles to summon the Servants and dragons. Later, when Jeanne Alter’s Servants are killed and her wyverns are sent into disarray with Fafnir slain during a battle between her forces and Ritsuka’s party, Gilles convinces her to retreat back to the castle.

Inside the castle, Jeanne Alter orders Gilles to defend while she summons another Servant. Deciding to use Prelati’s Spellbook to buy her time, Gilles suggests she summon King Arthur. He then confronts Ritsuka’s party as they rush towards the throne. He angrily asks why they stand his way, destroying his world and trying to kill Jeanne. Jeanne asks him if Jeanne Alter is really her, to which he claims Jeanne Alter is the true Jeanne. He then fights the group, not even allowing Jeanne to stop him and Jeanne Alter. He overwhelms them at first with his sea demons until he begins to struggle against them, yet they’re still unable to finish him off. Kiyohime and Elizabeth Báthory decide to hold him off while the others deal with Jeanne Alter.

During his fight with the two, Gilles suddenly runs off to the throne room, with Kiyohime and Elizabeth chasing after him. There he finds Jeanne Alter about to disappear with her defeat. He comforts by saying he’ll destroy France in her stead before she disappears. Taking the Grail that emerged from her, he reveals he created Jeanne Alter after the Grail failed to resurrect Jeanne herself. He tells Jeanne that even though she would never hate France, he would hate it and swear to destroy it. Knowing she would forgive them, he will never forgive them. Refusing to let even Jeanne stand in his way, Gilles absorbs the Grail and fights the group. To his shock, he is defeated despite having the Grail’s power. He refuses to give up though until Jeanne tells him to stop and thanks him for believing her in life. He then disappears, saying only he should go to hell.

Vengeful Demon's Wail at the Prison Tower[]

A fragment of Gilles is drawn into the recreation of Château d'If to serve as the avatar of sloth. He spouts about how his blasphemy is an offering to God when Ritsuka and Edmond Dantès arrive at the third hall. He is honored by Edmond's words when he says he represents sloth because he let himself fall into depravity. After declaring he will torture Ritsuka into despair, he fight them and Edmond. After he is defeated, Gilles apologizes to Ritsuka back in Chaldea for a fragment of him troubling them in the prison tower. However he believes they'll escape the prison as long as the light of their soul never extinguishes.

Da Vinci and The Seven Counterfeit Heroic Spirits[]

A counterfeit of Gilles is created by Jeanne Alter. He's given the role of "a sad father who was loved by his daughter when she was a kid, but is now hated by her since she became a rebellious teenager."

Ritsuka's party encounters him in the Louvre on their way to confront Jeanne Alter. After explaining his role, Gilles asks Ritsuka not to interfere with Jeanne Alter. Ritsuka refuses, with Leonardo da Vinci adding they only wish to understand Jeanne Alter's motive. After being defeated in the ensuing fight, Gilles describes how Jeanne Alter is trying to become an individual, even though she is a counterfeit. He hopes they'll meet again someday and disappears.

Fate/Accel Zero Order[]

Gilles is killed by Ritsuka, Mash, El-Melloi II, and Diarmuid Ua Duibhne when they intrude into his workshop.

Event: Prisma Causeway[]

Gilles is a member of the Magical Gentleman, alongside Blackbeard, Phantom of the Opera, and Diarmuid. He is confronted by Ritsuka's party in the library of the Land of Dead Bookshelves. They question his interest in Magical Girls instead of something more akin to him, such as saints and witches and the like. Gilles answers he considers Magical Girls to be miracles of God, even calling Jeanne d'Arc a Magical Girl when she led armies after hearing God's voice. He then takes notice of Mash and Chloe von Einzbern, and mistakes them both for different versions of Jeanne. Seeing he considers even Fou to be Jeanne, the group fight and defeat Gilles.[14]

Christmas Event: The Second Generation is Alter[]

Jeanne Alter has Gilles meet her in the hallway late at night. Unlike her, he is happy knowing the children are getting excited for Christmas, though he doesn't understand why his smile frightens them. Jeanne, frustrated at Santa Alter, then tells him her plan to steal Santa Alter's sack and deliver presents before she can. Gilles is concerned, though, about the difficulty of stealing Santa Alter's sack since they both lack Presence Concealment. In response, Jeanne Alter reveals Child-Gil gave her an invisibility potion. Under its effects, she'll steal Santa Alter's sack, then spend the night delivering the presents. Believing her plan to be flawless, Jeanne Alter drinks the potion despite her initial fears. However, the potion turns out to be the Potion of Youth as Jeanne Alter is transformed into a child instead. This child version calls her adult self's plan mean but decides to proceed with it out of respect for her desire to be Santa. Introducing herself as Jeanne Alter Lily, she announces she was born to become the next Santa. Gilles is so excited to Jeanne Alter as a child that he ascends. Calling her adult self's invisibility plan dumb, Alter Lily declares she will instead convince Santa Alter that she's the better Santa. She goes into Santa Alter's room to do just that but is immediately and violently ousted. Hearing the commotion, Jeanne asks Gilles why he is making so much noise when everyone is trying to sleep. However, upon seeing Jeanne Alter Lily, she demands an explanation for her instead under the threat of poking his eyes out. Gilles explains to her what happened.

Chibichuki![]

Ryuunosuke and Caster was working on their art, Touko Aozaki altered Ryuunosuke's work on a whim. She recreated it into a Saber figure, Caster starts worshipping Touko as a "teacher" and Ryuunosuke calls it cool.

Other appearances[]

In Fate/strange Fake, after having summoned True Caster using herself as a catalyst, Francesca mentioned that although she was ninety percent certain that she would summon herself, she still maybe hoped that Gilles could have turned up.[15]

In Type-Moon's April Fools' Day 2009, moon.cinemas.jp is a fake movie theater site listing a number of parody films. He was featured in Chariot Man: A True Tank Man (戦車男, Sensha Otoko?), a parody film of Densha OtokoWP. Caster plays the role of Sensha Otoko's Eirei Throne Channel internet friend with the nickname Danna (ダンナ, Dan'na?). He's known as criminal number 1. His role is expanded in TYPE-MOON 10th Anniversary Phantasm where he recently seemingly retired. He and the other Eirei Throne Channel suggested Sensha Otoko to buy a Saber figure for El-Melloi Girl. When Ryuunoksuke shows his new artwork, Danna seems dispassionate and compositing photos of Saber with Jeanne head gear. Ryuunoksuke accidently knocked over Danna's customed Jeanne figure with his artwork, Ryuunosuke sacrificed his artwork to save Danna's figure. However Danna dived and saved his artwork. He lectures Ryuunosuke as an artist and becomes passionate about creating new art.

Abilities[]

Caster merges a horde of his monsters

Caster merges a horde of his monsters

When Gilles de Rais was alive, he turned to alchemy in an attempt to relieve his financial difficulties and eventually strayed down a dark path that led him to try summoning a demon. But while it's certainly true that he participated in the ceremony, the actual magus was his friend François Prelati. As such, he is not a Heroic Spirit that qualifies for the Caster class. Much like Sasaki Kojirou, the Assassin class Servant of the Fifth Holy Grail War, Caster is an aberration in the normal Servant summoning process who cannot be called a proper Heroic Spirit. As such, the fact that Ryuunosuke's bogus ritual ended up actually summoning, is considered a total "fluke".[7] While his occult knowledge is terrifying, it is noted that Gilles has a good body build from his time as a knight, and he could potentially handle classes other than Caster if summoned properly. While he became a general, it can be said his money was his greatest asset rather than his martial prowess.[2]

He is capable of keeping human beings in stasis with his magic, allowing them to withstand incredible amounts of physical damage which would otherwise prove fatal. Beyond this, Caster is able to accomplish similar skills to other magi contained in the class, such as concealment, divination, and the creation of magic items, like the bracelet he made for Ryunnosuke that can control minds.

Skills[]

Class Skills[]

  • Item Construction (— Rank): At the cost of the acquisition of the summoning ability by means of his Noble Phantasm, the "Item Construction" Skill is lost.

Personal Skills[]

  • Appreciation of the Arts (E- Rank): If one happens to see a Noble Phantasm that possesses artistic anecdotes, there is a small chance that he might be able to figure out its true name.[1]
  • Mental Pollution (A Rank): A skill acquired through a distorted mental state, providing the power to shut out mental interference thaumaturgy. However, because of his twisted mentality, he is unable to understand anyone who does not possess an equal rank of Mental Pollution, though he displays no difficulty communicating with Ryuunosuke Uryuu. At Rank A, there is a high probability of reflecting mental interference magecraft.[1]
  • Evil Eye of the Abyss (C Rank): The final fate of Gilles de Rais that looked into the abyss and was looked back in turn. Those eyes suffered a great metamorphosis and became a thing that spreads fear, similar to those "things" that lurk in the depths. It is not a fear coming from violence or coercion, but because of making the "fear of the unknown" the opponent already has inside, they surface. Lost Sanity indeed.[16]

Noble Phantasm[]

In terms of Servants of the Caster class, Gilles is one of the weakest on record. Possessing very little ability in Magecraft himself, most of his power is derived from his Noble Phantasm, Prelati's Spellbook, which acts as a massive mana reserve and a guide for whatever spell he hopes to enact. Due to the effects of the spellbook, he is capable of summoning near-endless waves of demonic, amphibious familiars without fatigue, making him a viable threat despite his failings. His most powerful summoning is Gigantic Horror, a massive extradimensional evil god. Appart of its giant size, its most impressive asset is its high regenerative capabilities; not even the combined efforts of Iskandar with his chariot, Diarmuid and weakened Artoria, multiple mountain-shattering weapons fired simultaneously from Gilgamesh's Gate of Babylon or Iskandar's Ionioi Hetairoi are able to take it down. After witnessing its power, Tokiomi Tohsaka worried that only Ea would destroy it. It was ultimately vanquished by Excalibur.

Development[]

Creation and Conception[]

ZeroCasterinitial

Caster's initial designs.

Gilles de Rais was designed by Takashi Takeuchi in Fate/Zero.

Before Gilles de Rais was chosen for Fate/Zero. Gen Urobuchi had trouble thinking of a Caster-class Servant for the Fourth Holy Grail War, so he asked Kinoko Nasu if he can use a Chinese XianWP. It was when Nasu explained the Western-only rule of the Fuyuki system.[17] The inspiration for Gilles came to Urobuchi from the fact that many people, including himself, believed Artoria's identity to be Jeanne d'Arc. While he originally thought to tease the readers in the same manner with another woman who people would identify as Jeanne, he eventually came to the idea of using Gilles as a Servant.[18]

Takashi Takeuchi likes drawing a character with such strong peculiarities. While he used to be good looking, he comments that Gilles must have "wet his eyebrowless, round, and cute eyes as he was adoring Joan." Urobuchi believes he is more the style of a creature than a Caster, and that he is at his height when he smiles.[2]

Tsuruoka Satoshi (Voice actor of Gilles) claims he was inspired by kabukiWP and a mixture of big actresses and entertainers for his portrayal of Caster. When Ryuunosuke was shot in episode 14, Tsuruoka was overjoyed that he was able to feel, "Oh, no...Ryuunosuke..." That scene was original to the anime. Tsuruoka had recorded two versions after discussing the performance with Director Ei AokiWP. One was an upbeat performance like, "But do not worry, Ryuunosuke!", while the other performance, "You have died and left me alone" was sadder, was said as if he was cradling Ryuunosuke. The former was chosen for the broadcast version, but at the end, he go, "Behold, Ryuunosuke!" As a performer, Tsuruoka was happy that he had realized that Ryuunosuke still existed somewhere inside his heart.[10] According to Takumi YamazakiWP (Voice actor of Kayneth) said whenever Tsuruoka talked, the temperature in the studio went up two degrees.[19]

Atsuhi Ikariya was in charge of the character design for the anime version.[10] He says that when he first read the original novel, he had difficulty designing the Caster team.[20] He thought he was pretty emotionless at first.[21] After listening to the characters' actor made him think more about them, he realized he was incredibly rich emotionally so he hastily change his drawing and got him more interested in the pair.[20][21] He explained that Caster doesn't have eyebrows so it is hard to express his emotions. He plumped up the facial muscles in the area above his brow, so now his face can convey a wide range of expression.[21] By changing the shape of his forehead to match his emotions, his facial expressions are made richer and more pronounced. His fishlike wall-eyes in particular are a standout trait.[20]

Gilles de Rais was illustrated by Azusa in Fate/Grand Order. His scenario writers are Gen Urobuchi and Yuuichirou Higashide in Fate/Grand Order.

Comment from Illustrator[]

"It was lots of fun drawing Gilles de Rais’ rich facial expressions. I also had fun as a user with his appearances in the first chapter Orléans, limited time event, etc. I was also happy to see that the several growing states after the evolution were reproduced so solidly in the battle graphics! Please take care of Caster Gilles de Rais as the man in charge of the tentacles, guys!!" (Azusa)

Reception[]

Tsuruoka said he and Akira IshidaWP went to the café that Ufotable runs and he was shocked to see Ryuunosuke and Gilles were popular that characters like them were so well received. Tsuruoka thought the visual scene in episode 13 where Gilles and Ryuunosuke discussed about god was beautiful and he loved the light streaming down from heaven. That scene was a real positive moment for Satoshi Tsuruoka and Gilles. According to Tsuruoka, he considers the scene was so charming. Tsuruoka describes Gilles to be a slacker because he's always letting his hobbies get the better of him.[10]

Akira IshidaWP (Voice actor of Ryuunosuke) said he has a mixed feeling over the fact that a character like him is well received. Ishida thought it was fascinating how Caster who doubts God's existence and Ryuunosuke, who is a believer, mesh so well together somehow. Ishida believe that Gilles and Ryuunosuke need to apply themselves in order to win the Holy Grail War and that they might win if they had gone-all-out.[10]

Megumi ToyoguchiWP (Voice actress of Sola-Ui) claims she loves Caster.[19]

Kinoko Nasu said the scene where Caster first shows up is horrific enough in the book, but the way Ufotable animated has made it even more memorable.[22]

Takeuchi joked about Caster and Ryuunosuke ought to get married already.[23]

    Comment for Gilles de Rais
Takeuchi: He is a fairly troubled character Drawing this character with such strong peculiarities is fun.
Urobuchi: Already, he's more in the style of a creature than a Caster. He used to be such a good-looking guy... but what's really terrifying is his occult knowledge.
Takeuchi: I don't think he's that good-looking, but he does have an awfully pretty expression (laugh). Because he's a knight, his body build is also pretty good, so he has the possibility of being summoned as a class other than Caster, huh?
Urobuchi: Well, his summoning as a Caster is already against the rules. Though he ended up becoming a general, his most awesome asses wasn't his martial might but his money, right~?

    Profile
A French noble from the 15th Century. Having repeatedly committed the deed of abducting young boys from the vicinity of his domains and then disgracing・slaughtering them one after the other, things reached the point in which he became known as the model for the later fairytale "Bluebeard".

    Level 1 Bond
    Height/Weight: 196cm・70kg
    Source: Historical fact
    Region: France
    Alignment: Chaotic Evil Gender: Male
A holy monster that sought for God more than anyone else.

    Level 2 Bond
He was once the owner of a highly pious heart, he fell of deep despair and lost sight of God after Jeanne D'arc was executed as a heretic. His cruel deeds were also a means to prove the absence of God (who supposedly punished such vices).

    Level 3 Bond
"Textbook of the Spiral Sunken Castle"
    Rank: A+ Type: Anti-Army
    Prelati's Spellbook.
A grimoire which in itself is equipped with a magic reactor.
It summons monsters from another world in an inexhaustible supply.
Gilles de Rais is not a legitimate magus himself and has no groundings in magecraft, but in exchange this grimoire can exercise magecraft.

    Level 4 Bond
At first, Gilles got involved in alchemy along with his friend, the cleric François Prelati, in order to cover up for financial difficulties, but at some point he lost sight of the original purpose and began to concentrate on summoning of demons.

    Level 5 Bond
As others began fearing that he would sell over his domains to an enemy nation in order to raise money, as an excuse for the seizure of his territory, Gilles was convicted for his past misdeeds and executed. The censures towards his blasphemy and cruel deeds were all nothing but political pretenses.

    Interlude
This man, who couldn't help but hold suspicions against God exactly because he extolled God too much and infatuated himself with scornfully curse God, was finally destroyed without being judged by God. Probably, only a Master who shows understanding towards such zeal and despair can perfectly employ him as a Servant.

[v] Fate/Zero material - Encyclopedia: Gilles de Rais [Servant], p.097-098

    Gilles de Rais [Servant]
A nobleman from 15th Century France. As a leader in the French army, he fought alongside Jeanne d'Arc to put an end to the Hundred Years War, and was hailed as a hero who saved his country. But soon after he returned to his territory, he began kidnapping, raping, and killing young boys one after another, eventually coming to be feared as the villain "Bluebeard".
However, it was all-too-common in that era for nobles to disregard the human rights of commoners and treat the populations of their territories as disposable livestock. So, under normal circumstances even killing them en masse shouldn't have been treated as anything more serious than animal abuse. But unfortunately for Gilles, he had an enormous amount of land holdings at the time, far exceeding those held by the Duke of Brittany, and enough to be regarded as a threat by the king himself. On top of that, due to his mind-boggling wastefulness in his private life, his public finances were almost entirely depleted, and there were apprehensions that he may try to sell his land to enemy nations. As a result, he was condemned and executed for his crimes as a pretext for seizing control of his assets.
As for Gilles' relation to sorcery, he turned to alchemy in an attempt to relieve his financial difficulties, and eventually strayed down a dark path that led him to try summoning a demon. But while it's certainly true that he participated in the ceremony, the actual magus was his friend François Prelati – Gilles himself was nothing more than a patron. As such, he is not a Heroic Spirit that qualifies for the Caster class. Or rather, he is not even a proper Heroic Spirit at all. The fact that Ryuunosuke's bogus ritual ended up actually completing a summoning sorcery was, honestly, more or less a total fluke. In that sense, the "Caster" Gilles de Rais is just as much of an irregular Servant as the "Assassin" Sasaki Kojirou.

    Akira Ishida

    Tsuruoka Satoshi

Where did you draw your portrayals of Caster and Ryunosuke from?
Tsuruoka: Some of it comes from looking at the visuals. The bulging eyes says it all. I learned from reading the novel that he has a talkative personality, so I thought I would play him in a kabuki style in spite of the fact that he's European. I based his speaking styles on big actresses and entertainers and decided that he would tend to use kabuki tones when he becomes emotional.
Ishida: Back when I first played him in "Sound Drama", I thought to myself, "Boy, this character is horrible" (laughs). "A character like this can only exist inside a story." Plus, since "Sound Drama," had no visuals, I had no choice but to rely on the insanity inside myself. Even at the risk of being misunderstood, I believe that Ryunosuke's emotions are ones that everyone had deep down. I thought I would give that a broad interpretation. I was a bit hesitation when I first started playing him, but then I gradually started thinking. "Hey, it's fun to be able to cut loose like this." In the end, I've managed to reach a place where I understand Ryunosuke, as dangerous as that sound (laughs).

When Ryuunosuke was shot (#14), I was overjoyed that I was able to feel, "Oh, no...Ryunosuke..." That scene was original to the anime, and I recorded two versions after discussing the performance with Director Ei Aoki. One was an upbeat performance, like, "But do not worry, Ryunosuke!" The other performance, "You have died and left me alone" was sadder, said as if he was cradling Ryunosuke. The former was chosen for the broadcast version, but at the end, I go, "Behold, Ryunosuke!" As a performer, I was happy that he had realized that Ryunosuke still existed somewhere inside his heart.

Caster's Master. His fascination with, and lust for, death leads him to become a serial killer who commits murder after murder. He has two piercing, a chain at his waist, and a quiet disposition. The bracelet on his wrist is a magical item given to him by Caster, however, it is destroyed by Rin Tohsaka. Atsushi Ikariya was in charge of the character design for the anime version.

    Caster
True name: Gilles de Rais. Doubting God, he becomes a Heroic Spirit to try to resurrect the holy virgin Joan Of Arc. In the original novel, he is described as having "huge, rolling eyes and oily, glistening cheeks." Because he was originally a knight, he has a muscular build. Atsuhi Ikariya was in charge of the character design for the anime version

  18. [v] Interview de Gen UROBUCHI à l’Épitanime 2013

TMF: Where did you get the idea to make Gilles de Rais appear as a Servant?
U: At the start of Fate/stay night, there was a person in armour, feminine, blonde; so everyone, even me, said to themselves that it was Jeanne dfArc. But that wasnft the case. So, to tease the reader, I told myself that I would also have a blonde character in armour, and one would think that it was Jeanne dfArc. Thatfs how Gilles de Rais came to be. I am sure that the readers make the same mistake I did.

Master Session 002 - Lancer Side

Midorikawa: Lancer had quite a few of scenes, but I was struck by the scene where he curses them as he dies (episode 16), and by the way he's shown as being so vigorous in the first half of the episode. He was so lively that when he's forced to kill himself, you feel sorrier for him. I thought his suicide scene was handled delicately. There's an illustration for that scene in the original (the TYPE-MOON VERSION). But they presented it differently in the anime. I was really impressed at how well they pulled it off.

Yamazaki: I bet that if we'd applied ourselves, we would've been the favorite to win the Holy Grail War.

Midorikawa wished that they allow Lancer and Saber to go on fighting forever as Lancer seemed to be enjoying himself.
