Gray (グレイ?), Class Name Assassin (アサシン, Asashin?), is an Assassin-class Servant summoned by Ritsuka Fujimaru in the Grand Orders of Fate/Grand Order.
Profile[]
Identity[]
Gray was the young assistant of Lord El-Melloi II. Gray was to be the flesh of King Arthur. When she was born, her facial features vaguely resembled those of King Arthur, but with the years, her body suddenly changed to that of King Arthur's. Losing her true face, she could no longer differentiate her own existence from that of King Arthur. Because of this, she could never fully understand herself. Upon hearing the news, Lord El-Melloi II, visited the village, and due to circumstances, Gray was entrusted to El Melloi, who made her his apprentice; admitting her to the Clock Tower of London.
Appearance[]
Assassin takes on the appearance of Gray in all of her forms. Her personal weapon is Grim Reaper: Scythe of the Death God, which is the alternate form of Add, her personal mystic code, whose purpose is to seal away Rhongomyniad and preserve its mystery.
A result of a particular clan’s attempt to forge a vessel fit for a king, her body faithfully resembles that of a hero of ages past, containing capabilities that should not be able to be found in modern day humans. However, as these changes happened instantaneously to Gray when she was a child, she is still not able to come to terms with the face she now carries. With that said, Gray cannot help but feel distant from even her own face. She has a great amount of trust in the man Lord El-Melloi II who brought her away from her hometown.
Personality[]
For the most part she is quite shy with other people and generally withdrawn.
Coming from her being born and raised in a rural area, she has yet to become used to life in the city and has a habit of being very attentive to her surroundings. From the ground up Gray is a kindhearted and patient girl whom others feel charmed by. No matter where she goes, she’ll more than likely have no trouble getting used to her surroundings and getting along with those around her. However, that is provided that we do not involve ourselves with the topic of the face under her hood.
She makes a great pair with the dirty-mouthed yet honest Add.

Fate/Grand Order[]
Event: Lady Reines's Case Files[]
Due to her connections with El-Melloi II and the effects of Chu Shi Biao, Gray is summoned to the Singularity as a full-fledged Servant, having reasonably qualified as one.[3] Understanding she was a Servant now but not how or why, Gray began searching Patchwork London for answers.[4]
She eventually finds Reines with Ritsuka fighting Astraea in the Tower of London and destroys the automatons that came to capture Reines under the assumption she is El-Melloi II. Ritsuka and Reines use this chance to grab the Mnemosyne scrap and run.[3]
Ritsuka is rendered unconscious upon retrieving the scrap. Carrying them, Reines and Gray went to the Patchwork of Dazzling Steam and rent a room at a hotel. While waiting for Ritsuka to wake up, Gray tells Reines of her circumstances. Reines tells Gray how she thought she was El-Melloi II until recently and that she and Ritsuka have been investigating El-Melloi II’s murder, believing the Mnemosyne scraps are connected. After Ritsuka wakes up, Gray voices her resolve to discover what happened to her mentor, feeling there’s no point in her being in the Singularity if she cannot do that. She then requests Ritsuka to form a temporary contract with her, which they do. Mash reveals through her analysis of the previously collected Mnemosyne scraps that there are smaller scraps. The group set out to find and retrieve the scraps.[4]
Outside of the hotel, the group sees a parade of automatons riding steam-powered horses, with the Patchwork’s king, Charles Babbage, riding in a steam-powered wagon. Suspecting Babbage has a connection with the scrap, Reines goes alone to search for a clue to prove that connection. She leaves joking Gray should at least keep Ritsuka from wandering into any mobile death traps. Gray apologizes to Ritsuka for Reines’ joke, though she does think that is her way of worrying about them. She is glad to hear that Ritsuka understands that, feeling it makes sense that Reines’ pupil would know Reines is a kind person deep down. She hopes Ritsuka will continue helping Reines, who always pushes herself in everything she does. However, she feels they wouldn’t have to worry about anything if El-Melloi II were with them. El-Melloi II was irreplaceable to her, and while he wasn’t a strong fighter or entirely reliable in bad situations, his presence gave her and Reines the strength to fight. Reines then returns with Artoria Alter, who' s been looking for Ritsuka and Reines to grant them their promised reward for solving the mystery of the missing pianist. Artoria Alter notices Gray is covering her face and asks her if she is trying to hide from her. Reines tells the queen that Gray is dealing with unusual circumstances, so Artoria Alter leaves the subject alone. She then agrees with the group’s request to meet with Babbage, especially since she already planned to speak with him anyway.[5]
Artoria Alter takes the group to Babbage’s throne room. After learning of their search for the Mnemosyne scraps, Babbage asks them to destroy his kingdom, as it is an unnatural realization of his dream. He reached this conclusion thanks to the Astraea’s guidance, who appears in the room. She reveals everyone in the Singularity, including herself, are missing memories and explains how she needs the scraps to compensate. Babbage reveals the scrap is infused into his body when Reines asks where it is. He explains the scraps are central to each Patchwork, and they immediately seek residence in what’s closest. Since the scrap is likely infused with his Spirit Core, he requests the group to kill him, calling it a last resort when they refuse. He reveals Astraea searched for an alternative in the other Patchworks, which explains why Ritsuka and Reines met her in the Tower of London. He then tells the group to locate his subsystem located somewhere in his castle.[5]
Searching for the subsystem, Ritsuka’s party locates a secret passage and follows it underground. After destroying the steam ghosts they encountered, they reach the core of the castle and witness ghosts being absorbed into a massive steam engine for their magical energy. Trimmau reports the engine has traces of Mnemosyne scraps that someone retrieved prior. Reines surmises the steam ghosts are the result of the scraps’ magical energy and ghosts fusing with the steam. After destroying the steam ghosts, the group finds Babbage’s subsystem, the Difference Engine. Reines uses it to discover that it was El-Melloi II who retrieved the scrap. She also realizes Babbagge forgot the scraps were in the engine. She further realizes the enemy’s goal was to use the energy taken from memories, which are normally inefficient as a source of energy, but she deduces there is something about the Singularity that makes memories an extremely potent energy source. Further deducing the Difference Engine has been working independently, Reines surmises the automatons went after her brother to get back the scrap he stole. She then says they need to return to her brother’s flat immediately.[5]
The group returns to Patchwork Fairy Tales to discover it has been warped into a city consumed by fire. Automatons and steam ghosts piling on each other in what remains of El-Melloi II’s flat, each trying to get the scrap. Astraea soon arrives and uses her Noble Phantasm, Custos Morum, to destroy automatons and steam ghosts, then goes to retrieve the final scrap. The group gives chase to reach the scrap before she does while fighting through enemies, and avoiding the remaining stars from her Noble Phantasm. However, far too many enemies stand in their way, as Astraea nearly reaches to the scrap. Gray prepares to unleash her Noble Phantasm to stop her when EMIYA arrives and stops Gray. After EMIYA is defeated, Gray launches Rhongomyniad, easily breaking through Astraea’s Custom Morum. With Astraea down, the group rush to reach the scrap. However, upon touching the scrap, Ritsuka finds their memories of Da Vinci are being erased. A figure tells them to accept those as no longer being the truth when El-Melloi II breaks the process. He reveals the scrap was a trap. Reines and Mash doubt it’s really him, to which he explains how he used his special properties as a Pseudo-Servant to create a corpse of himself. While it left him without nearly all of Zhuge Liang’s powers, it also allowed him to investigate without being detected as a Servant. He then explains how the enemy tried to use the scraps to rewrite Ritsuka’s memories. He concurs with Gray that Chaldea would know the validity of Ritsuka’s memories, but questions why they’ve only received transmissions from Mash, and explains the enemy needed someone Ritsuka absolutely trusted to guide them. Reines then deduces the “M“ in El-Melloi II’s message was for Mash. El-Melloi II reveals the Mash they’ve been talking with so far is a fake. After “Mash“ blocks communications, El-Melloi explains the enemy fabricated her to manipulate the group. He therefore suspects the enemy has information on Chaldea and believes the final scrap is related. He cannot deduce anymore though with his analysis of the final scrap, but he says Babbage could provide a deeper analysis. The group then return to Babbage’s castle with El-Melloi II, Astraea, and EMIYA.[6]
Babbage agrees to analyze the scrap, believing it may provide clues to the enemy. The analysis will take time, so he invites the group to rest in his castle. He believes the enemy would know why Ritsuka needed false memories implanted into them when Astraea asks why. He also wonders what particular memories of theirs were being erased. El-Melloi II deduces the enemy pities them, with good yet ill intentions. He then recommends they all rest. Gray requests to comb his hair in that case, noticing how messy it is, and scolds El-Melloi II for getting sloppy now that he’s a Servant. El-Melloi II tries to stop her from combing her hair when Reines realizes why she, Luvia, and Gray were summoned. It was because El-Melloi II failed, meaning when he created the corpse because he was driven into a corner. She, Gray, and Luvia were more inclined to be summoned because of their deep connections with him. But while Gray could reasonably qualify as a Servant, the same cannot be said for Luvia or Reines, so Reines deduces it was thanks to Zhuge Liang’s Noble Phantasm. El-Melloi II confirms it was Chu Shi Biao. Reines concurs with Gray that being forced into the position of Pseudo-Servant caused her to think she was El-Melloi II when first summoned. She mocks her brother for refusing to rely on others until things get really bad, but she and Gray would rather have that than a heartless fool who refused to do the same under similar circumstances.[3]
Later, while everyone is resting, El-Melloi II and Gray encounter Ritsuka in the hallway after they spoke with Reines. El-Melloi II instructs Gray to listen as he tells Ritsuka there is no need to resolve the Singularity since it will collapse on its own and recommends they return to Chaldea once they reestablish contact. But Ritsuka is determined to see through things to the end. El-Melloi II and Gray both swear as Ritsuka’s Servant to do all they can to assist. Reines then rushes in to show the three that the supposed Clock Tower was actually a fake Rhongomyniad.[3]
Babbage reports many steam ghosts and automatons are emerging from its interior, with approximately 80% of them heading out to capture Ritsuka. He then gives his analysis of the final scrap, revealing the enemy is related to Chaldea. El-Melloi II assumes they’re a traitor since they knew both Mash’s appearance and mannerisms. Babbage then gives the second name revealed in his analysis: Mnemosyne, a system of Chaldea. Reines and Astraea decide to assault the fake Rhongomyniad, but Babbage warns against it with all the enemies swarming out. Gray says she could clear a path, but she lacks the magical energy to do so. El-Melloi II suggests collecting the smaller scraps for magical energy and asks Babbage to provide a countermeasure against their fabricated memories.[7]
Joined by Babbage, the group search for the smaller scraps, and fight through their fabricated memories. Following a battle against fabrications of Ultra Heroine Z, and later a fabrication of Mysterious Heroine XX called Super Heroine ZZ, everyone is left exhausted seeing so many Artoria Faces. Add, noting how Gray has always hated her face, jokes that she’d likely faint on the spot if she ever visited Chaldea. El-Melloi II confesses it took him some time to get used to the phenomena when he came to Chaldea and tells Gray she’ll be fine for long as she wears her hood. Ritsuka doesn’t recall such a battle, so El-Melloi II suspects the enemy added possible memories.[8]
Afterwards, the group defeated a fabrication of Gawain at Camelot’s front gate, though his Gift of Nightlessness wasn’t functioning.[9]
Next, they defeat a fabrication of Black Iri, who transforms into a corrupt version of Illyasviel von Einzbern. Gray finds the memories oddly familiar, even though she shouldn’t know anything about them.[10]
Afterwards, the group defeats fabrications of Heracles and Medea on the Argo followed by fabrications of a corrupted Benkei.[11][12]
With the smaller scraps collected, Gray uses their magical energy to create an opening in the fake Rhongomyniad and a crystal stairway to it. Ritsuka, Reines, Gray, and Astraea ascend the stairs when they’re transported into a fabrication of the Battle of the Time Temple by a sudden Mnemosyne scrap. There they are confronted by fabrications of Lev Lainur Flauros and Barbatos. While Astraea bombards the Demon Gods with Custos Morum, Reines extracts Ritsuka’s memories of fighting the Demon Gods for her Noble Phantasm. Then, after Barbatos is fought several times, she uses her Noble Phantasm to rewrite the fabrication so Ritsuka is the Demon Gods’ conceptual weakness based on the fact Ritsuka slew more than anyone in history. With the fabricated Barbatos destroyed, the group continued their ascension.[7]
Eventually the group enters the fake Rhongomyniad’s interior, but Astraea is suddenly forced outside. Closing the opening, Mnemosyne explains they created the fabricated memory from earlier in order to weaken Astraea since she was a major threat. Taking on the appearance of Da Vinci, Mnemosyme explains she was a subsystem for verifying a Master’s existence during rayshift in case the staff died, though she was never implemented due to technical issues. Reines realizes Mnemosyne is trying to ensure Ritsuka is protected. Mnemosyne demands the group hand Ritsuka over and fights them. The battle ends when they’re struck by something akin to a Noble Phantasm. Reines deduces Mnemosyne is using the memory of Rhongomyniad since the fake one is her body. She tells Gray to use Rhongomyniad, but Mnemosyne is interfering with its activation. Mnemosyne then uses the Grail to transport Ritsuka into a space of memories.[13]
Gray uses Rhongomyniad to create a link into the space, allowing Reines to at least speak into it. Mnemosyne argues with Reines that Chaldea has been too tragic for Ritsuka, claiming she awakened to save them from their flaws and sorrows. Ritsuka, however, refuses to let her take their memories away. Mnemosyne replies she will need to break them, believing they are lying to themselves to cope, and decides to keep them with her until they’re completely healed. However, to her shock, something breaks through the exterior of the fake Rhongomyniad. It was Moriarty’s Noble Phantasm, with him having sacrificed himself to increase its distance and damage output.[13]
With Ritsuka out of Mnemosyne’s space of memories, Astraea enters the fake Rhongomyniad’s interior. She uses her second Noble Phantasm, Iam Redit et Virgo, to clear the sky of the smog that blocked Chaldea’s communications, allowing Chaldea to reestablish contact. Reines then reveals the motives for each Patchwork and concludes Mnemosyne created the Singularity centered on memory loss because she was the one who wanted to forget. Trimmau reveals the synergy between Mnemosyne and the fake Rhongomyniad has decreased due to Astraea’s Noble Phantasm, so the group use this opportunity to defeat her. With Mnemosyne defeated, all the memories she collected spill out from her. The fake Rhongomyniad begins to collapse as well, since it is her body. The group escape before it finally collapses.[13]
With the fake Rhongomyniad now destroyed, everyone disappears with the Singularity’s collapse.[13] Gray, however, encountered the Grail, which reacted to the real Rhongomyniad and granted her wish to stay with El-Melloi II. As a result, she returns with Ritsuka and El-Melloi to Chaldea. She apologizes to everyone for imposing on them and shows she collected the Grail. Da Vinci deduces how Gray came to be at Chaldea, for which Gray again apologizes. Goredolf Musik commends however and recommends she be given a tour. Sion also wishes to speak with her, wanting to know more about the Clock Tower, though her greatest interest lies in learning about Add and his function. Sherlock Holmes tells Gray she deserves a great deal of credit for resolving the Singularity and guarantees on his honor as a detective that no one in Novum Chaldea will begrudge her presence. Gray is surprised that she and Add are allowed to stay. Ritsuka welcomes her to Chaldea.[14]
Event: Little Big Tengu[]
Fate/Grand Order Arcade[]
Event: Lady Reines's Case Files[]
In the Arcade version of the event, the London Micro-Singularity is being created by the real Rhongomyniad using the memories of Ritsuka Fujimaru, instead of Mnemosyne and her fake Rhongomyniad created from Ritsuka's memories. When Fujimaru regains their memories, Rhongomyniad goes out of control and begins draining Gray's life force to maintain the Singularity instead. Gray completely transforms into Lancer Artoria due to Rhongomyniad, but after she is defeated returns to normal.
Much later, Lord El-Melloi II would claim that Beast VI/S was responsible for Rhongomyniad going haywire.[15]
Other Appearances[]
In Fate/Grand Carnival Gray appears among a lineup of Saberfaces when Ibaraki-douji complains about how many characters with that face there are.
Abilities[]
The reason why Gray qualifies for the Assassin Class is because of some special characteristics of Add and how she hides her Grim Reaper scythe on herself all the time.[4]
Skills[]
Class Skills[]
- Magic Resistance (C Rank): Nullifies any Magecraft with less than two incantations. She is unable to defend against greater magecraft and rituals.
- Independent Action (A+ Rank): The ability to act without a Master.
- King's Reflection (A Rank): A Skill that represents Gray’s capacity as the Once and Future King. She possesses what would be considered impossible for modern Human beings.
Personal Skills[]
- Mystic Code Seal Release (C Rank): Not only being able to seal the Holy Spear, but also based on what the circumstances call for Add is able to undergo a special release where he is able to take on a range of varying transformations. Gray’s appearance as an Assassin is a result of this skill and Mystic Code.
- Anti-Spirit Combat (B Rank): From being brought up as a grave keeper of a cemetery that calls for attention even within the British Empire, Blackmore. Gray is able to fend off all sorts of evil spirits and the sort through what she learned. Even Servants that are the materialization of a Great Heroic Spirit are not able to lift a finger against her skills.
- Protection of the Ends of the World (B Rank): However, since the spear is something that has only been given to her temporarily, its rank has been decreased.
Noble Phantasm[]
Her Noble Phantasm is Rhongomyniad. The spear Gray carries is actually but a shadow of its true form, an anchor that binds the two sides of the World. Even though it may only be a shadow, due to the burden that it places on Gray who is but a human, it is regularly sealed within Add and only released when the need arises. The various weapons that Add is able to transform into is made possible from the overflowing power of Rhongomyniad. Though it may be sealed by the mystic code and placed under 13 restrictions, the Holy Spear continues to shine as bright as ever.
Gray uses Add in his scythe form as her main weapon, though she's still highly adept at wielding his other forms: boomerang, mallet, bow, and spear.
Development[]
Gray's profile in Fate/Grand Order material VIII lists her as a Lancer instead of an Assassin.
Creation and Conception[]
Gray was illustrated by Mineji Sakamoto in Fate/Grand Order. Her scenario writer is Makoto Sanda in Fate/Grand Order.[2]
Comment from Illustrator[]
"I didn't have to draw different ascensions for her, so I went all out with her expressions and Add's weapon forms."' (Mineji Sakamoto)[2]
