Hassan of the Hundred Faces (百貌のハサン, Hyaku Bō no Hasan?), Class Name Assassin (アサシン, Asashin?), is the Assassin-class Servant of Kirei Kotomine in the Fourth Holy Grail War of Fate/Zero, and one of the Servants summoned by Ritsuka Fujimaru of the Grand Order conflicts of Fate/Grand Order. He is unique in that he has the capability to manifest as multiple entities at once.
Profile[]
Identity[]
Their True Name is Hassan-i-Sabbah, given the appellation of Hassan of the Hundred Faces (百貌のハサン, Hyaku Bō no Hasan?, also romanized as Hassan of the Multiple Personality or Hassan of One Hundred Personas), one of the nineteen people to hold the legendary Persian title "Old Man of the Mountain".
He was a candidate to become the next leader of the Assassins along with No Name Assassin, but he was chosen due to their fear of her. Their official reasoning was that even though she copied the eighteen previous Zabaniya abilities, she had not produced a miracle of her own.[7]
His own ability, Delusional Illusion, was unique in that it was the first to be an inborn ability rather than achieved through modifying his body. Instead, he took advantage of his affliction of Multiple Personality DisorderWP and acted as an assassin without a true identity. He became the nineteenth in succession and currently the last to have become a candidate for summoning. His wish to the Grail was ultimately "to be reconstituted as a complete personality."[8]
Appearance[]
The multiple bodies of Assassin can vary widely in age, gender, build, and style of dress, but in general, their hair appears purple, and their skin and clothing are nearly black. They wear the standard skull mask associated with the known Hassan of the other Grail Wars. The masks change as he changes personalities.[1]
Personality[]
Each of the Assassins has their own personality, and their experiences are not shared between them. The female Assassin is shown to be the main one to interact with Kirei. Assassin's goal in wanting to obtain the Grail is "to have a perfect and unified personality." Due to his Master having no intention of winning the war, he is instead damned to the fate of a voyeur. Kirei following the orders of Tokiomi makes it so he is truly a servant of a servant. He had plotted to hijack the Holy Grail before either Kirei or Tokiomi in the event the War had gone in their favor, but he didn't even get a chance to display his rebellious side before becoming the first Servant eliminated from the war.[8]
Relationships[]
- Hassan of the Cursed Arm
- "A very average Hassan. So I’m not irritated. A good guy."[9]
- Hassan of Serenity
- "I don’t like her personality, but her skill is so suited for assassination it makes me jealous. A good person as it is."[9]
- Hassan of ■■
- "You damned genius!"[9]
- First Hassan
- "A person that I don’t want to encounter if possible. When a great achievement is accomplished and there aren’t any regrets to leave, he always appears and always wants to put an end......"[9]
Role[]
Fate/Zero[]
The Assassins initially act as reconnaissance agents for Tokiomi Tohsaka and Kirei Kotomine, after Gilgamesh kills one of them in full view of the other Masters who possessed no specialization in any particular skill. This tactic successfully lead most of the Masters to believe that Kirei and Assassin had been defeated, and allowed the dozens of remaining Assassins to move freely without suspicion.
In the conversation between Kiritsugu Emiya and Maiya, Kiritsugu found it hard to believe that Assassin was defeated so easily so he orders Maiya to send familiars to keep an eye on Kirei Kotomine who surrendered in Fuyuki Church. In the battle between Saber and Lancer, Kiritsugu notices one of the Assassin watching the battle.
Their continued existence, however, is discovered when Rider and Waver Velvet accidentally encounter three Assassins in Caster's lair but they retreated after one of them was killed.
Kirei uses all of his command seals to send all the Assassin to gauge Iskander's power levels. The Assassins meet their end when they decline Iskander's wine offer. He complies by using his most powerful Noble Phantasm, "Ionioi Hetairoi: Army of the King", to massacre each and every one of the Assassins.
Einzbern Consultation Room[]
Assassin is the first Servant to visit Einzbern Consultation Room. This individual is Zayd and he explains his existence to both Irisviel von Einzbern and Zecchan. The truth wounded him when Zecchan calls him fake among fake. Both Iri and Zecchan continue wounding him when they described him as a disposable pawn that only lasted in episode two and was easily tricked by his master. He calls himself the most unfortunate Servant in the Holy Grail War as his appearance, class and Noble Phantasm are plain. Kirei, Tokiomi and Risei only see Assassin as surveillance and they called him useless and a loser. Assassin couldn't stand for the slander as he considers it is not his fault. Iri and Zecchan questioned to Zayd whether it was his fault. They pointed out was it necessary for himself to be proud of himself to snuck in alone with Kajiura YukiWP cool theme playing, he struck strange poses to dodge magic wires to show off which he only needs to dodge and destroy the origin of the Bounded field and lastly to say out loud it was "too easy" on a top secret mission. Zayd fallen to the pressure and admitted to his faults, he tried to redeem himself by offering his service as a tea server representing the Assassins. Iri rejected his offer as his troubles were solved and should be in the battlefield as a Servant. Zayd was touched when Iri thought highly of him, motivated by her words, Zayd leaves. Before leaving he tells his wish to leave his name on the pages of history, to change his name as Zayd the king of Assassins. Zayd runs out and was looking forward to participate in the war again, to assassinate all enemies to earn Kirei's respect. However he is caught by the tentacles of the Black Shadows, as he is being dragged he saw visions of the other Assassin being slayed by Rider and his armies. His last words were Assassin has no right and thought it was cruel who thought of it.

Fate/Grand Order[]
Fate/Accel Zero Order[]
Hundred Faces sees the flash of Rayshift and goes to investigate. However, El-Melloi II catches her in his Unreturning Formation, having prior knowledge of her abilities. He, Ritsuka, Mash then kill this particular persona of Hundred Faces.[10]
Stalking Ritsuka's party, Hundred Faces tries to ambush them. But El-Melloi II catches her again with Unreturning Formation. The group then kills this particular persona of Hundred Faces.[11]
Later, it is implied that Kirei has abandoned the war and left Fuyuki, leaving Hundred Faces without a Master. Fortunately for her, Tokiomi, who recently lost Gilgamesh, becomes her new Master. Tokiomi then sends her after Ritsuka's party, having no idea how to best use her abilities.[12]
At the Grail's cavern, Hundred Faces fails once again to ambush the group. Frustrated, she decides to use all of her remaining personas for this battle. After being defeated, she admonishes the group for trying to destroy her wish. She hears a bell toll and disappears asking the First Hassan to forgive her.[12]
Sixth Singularity: Camelot[]
Hundred Faces and her compatriots are kidnapping Nitocris when they’re confronted by Ritsuka’s party. Assuming they're soldiers sent by Ozymandias, she orders her compatriots to keep one alive for intel. Her mask breaks during the fight, so she orders her compatriots to retreat with Nitocris. But one informs her that Leonardo da Vinci took Nitocris during the battle. Hundred Faces and her compatriots then retreat when sphinxes and medjed approach the area.[13]
Hassan of the Cursed Arm reintroduces her to the group after they saved her village, the western village, from Mordred's unit. She refuses to cooperate with them, saying they cannot be trusted. Cursed Arm asks for an update on the situation regarding Hassan of Serenity. Hundred Faces answers there are no developments, but she’s concerned their plans may be tortured out of Serenity. Realizing only Ritsuka's party can help, she tells them that Serenity is imprisoned in a fort belonging to the Round Table. A select few were sent to attempt a rescue, but none have returned. Hundred Faces tells the group to prepare a hostage to exchange for the Hassan; Mash suggests Bedivere. Hundred-Faced agrees, and departs Ritsuka, Mash and Cursed Arm.[14]
Along the way, the group rescues Xuanzang Sanzang from monsters. She joins them to rescue her disciple, who is also in the fort.[14] Arriving at the fort, the group decide to break in before Agravain returns to torture Serenity again for information. Hundred-Faced uses Zabaniya: Delusional Illusion to distract the guards, while the others sneak into the dungeon.[15]
An hour later, the others leave the fort with Serenity and Tawara Touta. Hundred Faces noticed Agravain returning to the Holy City of Camelot on horseback. She commends Ritsuka for their success, then goes to steal some horses. The group return to the village by horseback.[15]
Returning to the village, the group realizes they’re outmatched in terms of power and numbers. They also recognize they need someone to fight Gawain since their assault on Camelot will always fail as long as he’s at the front gate. Serenity suggests going to the Shrine of Azrael to ask for the First Hassan, whose location she was tortured for. Cursed Arm agrees with the idea and tells the others to return to the eastern village. On the way back, Hundred Faces parts ways with them to gather more troops.[16]
When Ritsuka’s party is sent to the Atlas Institute by Hassan, Hundred Faces tells them via a messenger that they’ll need to search for Ozymandias’ favorite ruin. It is a place he has no power over, and even he can’t investigate it. She also notes a man wearing a black cape and turban has been spotted near the ruins. Providing a map, she warns the group not to fight Ozymnadias’ divine beasts wandering around the ruin.[17]
After Ritsuka’s party returns to the village having gained Ozymandias’s cooperation, Serenity confirms they’ve gathered 17000 followers. Hundred Faces says there are 2,000 people in Camelot secretly supporting their rebellion. The rebellion had difficulty growing at first, but it grew exponentially after Ritsuka and Mash saved the refugees from the Holy Execution. Later, after Cursed Arm reviews their strategy, Ritsuka, Mash, and Bedivere prove their resolve to the Hassans through combat. Afterward, everyone takes time to rest.[18]
In the wastelands near Camelot, the group reviews their strategy once more when Romani reports the city is ready for them. Lancelot (who defected from Goddess Rhongomyniad earlier) orders the allied forces to advance when a sandstorm created by Hassan suddenly appears from the north to envelop Camelot. With the storm making both sides’ archers useless, the allied forces advance onto Camelot as fast as possible.[19]
As Ritsuka’s party struggle against Tristan in Camelot, the Hassans arrive to fight him instead. Hundred Faces tells them they researched Tristan’s history, so they can kill him. After Ritsuka’s party leave, the Hassans fight Tristan. Hundred Faces’s manifested personas are soon reduced to less than five. Serenity attempts to poison Tristan with her Noble Phantasm, knowing he has a conceptual weakness to poison. However, it is ineffective due to his Gift, Reversal. Hundred Faces and Serenity are then killed by him.[19]
Final Singularity: Solomon[]
Hassan of the Hundred Faces is amongst the "Camelot" Singularity Servants to aid Chaldea against the Demon Gods Pillar.[20]
Hokusai Trial Quest[]
Hundred Faces and Serenity appear as police officers named Bou and Sei respectively in Ritsuka's dream of Edo. They are the subordinates of Hatchoubori (Cursed Arm).
Receiving false intel from Utagawa publisher Hoeidou, they arrive in Enkou-in to search for the supposed impostor of Katsushika Hokusai. As Hokusai himself isn't present, they decide to arrest Hokusai's disciples, Oei included. But publisher Nishimuraya says the police should've gotten notice that Hokusai himself wouldn't be present. Nevertheless, Hatchoubori and his subordinates continue with their arrest. Oei fights back, with Ritsuka and Suzuka Gozen joining her.
After being defeated, Hatchoubori admits the police were at fault and apologizes for trying to frame Oei for a crime she didn't commit. But Bou believes Oei and the others should be punished for interfering with police duties. She calls Hatchoubori a softie and reluctantly agrees with him when he decides to pass off the incident as a minor offense involving a rather lively round of sumo. She then leaves with him and Sei.
Realm of the Thanatos Impulse: Traum[]
Hundred Faces serves under Kriemhild, though in this scenario Zayd is the representative persona instead Asako. Kriemhild sends them and Archer after the traitor Salome and the Via Regia Realm spies helping Ritsuka from the Revenge Realm. The two kill the spies, though Hundred Faces dies fighting Salome.
Hundred Personas Looking for Something[]
During Hundred face Hassan's story interlude, it is revealed that one of their personalities has been missing since they were summoned to Chaldea. All their personas have been seeking this missing personality during their spare time, but the "Asako" facet eventually seeks Ritsuka and Mash's help in determining where their missing personality might be. Hassan initially attacks Blackbeard under the suspicion that he is holding them captive due to his tastes for "cute" girls, especially one as defenseless as their missing persona. This proves fruitless, after which Hassan agrees to have their Dew Painter personality help fix Blackbeard's destroyed figurines in apology.
The group comes across other personalities of Hundred Faces trying to gather information from other Heroic Spirits in various contests, prompting "Asako" to "help herself" win. Eventually they determine that the children Heroic Spirits have been behaving suspiciously, which leads them to the room of Nursery Rhyme and Jack, where they have been hiding the "Little Hassan" personality. The children oppose "Asako" taking her child personality back, having only shortly become friends after finding her wandering the halls, and they assume "Little Hassan" will be forced to continue her role of "being interrogated".
After subduing Nursery Rhyme and Jack, "Asako" assures all present that as a Servant, "Little Hassan"'s role is not to be interrogated anymore, and that the other personas have only been searching for her out of concern. She is free to adopt the role of a normal child who can have friends and have tea parties, much to Nursery Rhyme and Jack's delight and they happily send her back home so long as she comes by to play in the future. As they return, "Asako" reasons that due to the lack of any form of mental communication between their personalities, "Little Hassan" went into hiding because she did not understand what Master they had been contracted to. Mash reassures her on this matter, and is intent on introducing "Little Hassan" to the other Heroic Spirits and Chaldea.
Other appearances[]
The Hundred face Hassan was briefly mentioned in No Name Assassin's narration.[7]
In Type-Moon's April Fools' Day 2015, Asako and Chibi Assassin is in a female group called Momoiro Hassan Z (ももいろハサンZ, Momoiro Hasan Z?) in the Imperial Roma talent agency, her class is Stealth idol (ステルスアイドル, Suterusu Aidoru?).
Abilities[]
Hassan of the Hundred Faces uses their superior numbers to overwhelm their enemies and use a variety of weapons depending on the personality. As each personality has its own expertise, they can handle almost any situation they find themselves in. As an Hassan, Hundred Faces is naturally suited to assassination missons.
Skills[]
Class Skills[]
- Presence Concealment (Rank A+): Severs presence as a Servant. Suitable for covert actions. It is nearly impossible to be discovered if presence is completely cut off. However, the rank of Presence Concealment falls greatly when adopting preparations to attack.[3]
Personal Skills[]
- Librarian of Knowledge (Rank C): Distributed processing of memory through multiple personalities. By passing a Luck check, knowledge perceived in the past can definitely be reproduced in the memory even if it wasn’t acknowledged.[3]
- All Kinds of Specializations (Rank A+): Proper usage of professional skills by arbitrarily switching between the multiple personalities. Tactics, scholarship, espionage, assassination, swindling, rhetoric, and other 32 types of specialties in total can be demonstrated with proficiency of B rank or above.[3][4]
- Battle Retreat (Rank B)[4]
Noble Phantasm[]
The Noble Phantasm of Hundred Faces is Zabaniya: Delusional Illusion. It allows Hassan of Hundred Faces to divide himself into any of 100 separate personalities, though only 80 existences can manifest at one time. Rather than being the result of body modification like other Zabaniya techniques, the multiple bodies he possess as a Servant came of intentionally fragmenting his psyche in life—a sort of self-inflicted dissociative identity disorderWP intended to compartmentalize the various skill sets and knowledge he had accumulated during his lifetime, owning a total of 32 distinct specializations. Summoned as a Servant, he obtained the capacity to express each personality as an independent body, and to relegate individual tasks to the personalities best suited to them.
Among these, several distinct persona are observed. Each personality has some strengths and weaknesses. Among them, there are impatient glory-hounds who ignore orders, and individuals who are terrible at ambushes despite being assassins.[8] As the nature of the Hassan's Noble Phantasm is "division," the sum of his iterations did not exceed his original existence in strength or capacity; that is to say, each independent fragment was far weaker than his original whole—and owing to the generally weak starting attributes of his class, he definitively became the Servant of the Fourth Fuyuki Holy Grail War. However, Presence Concealment was shared across all bodies without degradation, effectively permitting him to serve as an "intelligence network" in his multiplicity.

Little Hassan[]

Others[]
Including the above individuals whose titles are known, the epithets of eighty-eight of the Hassan's hundred personas have been revealed.[21]
Development[]
Gen Urobuchi originally designed a plot line involving one of Assassin's personalities, a small girl called Child Assassin, joining with Waver and Rider in the second or third volume to lighten up the story, but it remained unused because giving Waver too much focus would have made the identity of the main character too confusing. She was conceived as an unfortunate young girl lacking in conversational skills, memories, and the awareness that she was a part of Hassan-i-Sabbah. Her clueless personality surfaces when she is captured by the enemy in order to protect her secret, so when she, along with the other Assassins, attack Waver and Rider in Caster's workshop, she separates herself from those who are beheaded by Rider. Waver mistakes her presence there, believing her to be one of Ryuunosuke's victims suffering from memory loss, and while Rider knows of her identity, he honors Waver's chivalry to allow the Mackenzies to take in yet another false household member. After Kotomine, who knows of her existence, utilizes the Command Spell to attack those at the Einzbern Castle, she regains her memories as Hassan. Through a dramatic farewell tragedy, Waver would climb another step on the path to becoming an adult.[22] Although she was discarded, she was later featured in Einzbern Consultation Room and Capsule Servant.
Atsuhi Ikariya was responsible for the Assassin scenes in episode 2, he had drawn the key animation and had fun drawing him.[23] The scenes with Assassin put Mr. Ikariya's abilities on display. He says that "Assassin is drawn with an emphasis on actions that are striking and having impact merely standing still. Pay particular attention to how meticulously the abdominal muscles and overall musculature are drawn".[24]
Creation and Conception[]
The female Assassin is given a design for her face in Fate/Zero material. Takashi Takeuchi calls her the "most delicious" female and says she looks more like a thief than an assassin, but says he made her more like a "Terasawa Girl" rather than just having a beautiful form to keep from overlapping with Maiya. Urobuchi thinks he may have used her more if he had seen her face earlier, and he likes her muscular figure. Despite the design, she doesn't actually have a face under her mask, much like Hassan of the Cursed Arm.[1]
Kinoko Nasu explained that Ufotable has made many original character designs, one for each Assassin.[25] Atsushi Ikariya was responsible for Assassin designs.[26] There is a design for a very muscular assassin. Because there are multiple Assassins, additional character designs are made each time he appears.[27]
Urobuchi has made up an Assassin who is famous for impersonating "Toyotomi Hideyoshi". Nasu has made up an Assassin whose expertise is in sexing chicks[28]
Hassan of the Hundred Faces was illustrated by Task Ohna in Fate/Grand Order.
Reception[]
Urobuchi really liked the stage direction and execution of the scene where Assassin infiltrates the Tohsaka estate, he thought it was excellent. Urobuchi liked the Assassin Servant, he was surprised by how well the Ufotable staff drew all the different Assassins that were all part of him (Hassan). He was impressed to see them make 100 varied designs for the scene where a swarm of them attack Rider.[25]
Nasu thinks Assassin is a great Servant and he was pumped up thinking about him sneaking into the Tohsaka headquarters in the anime.[25]
- In the Type-Moon's 10th Anniversary Character Poll, Assassin was ranked 91st.

Comment for Hassan
Takeuchi: As expected, the most delicious girl is female Assassin, but if she just had a beautiful form, it would overlap with Maiya's, so I aimed to make her like a Terasawa Girl.
Urobuchi: Yeah, I love this better. Secretly, the muscles on her two arms and abdomen are also moe.
Takeuchi: "If you take off the mask, there's no true face underneath"; it should be something like that, but, of course, they were nothing but empty words.

One of the successive generations of the Old Man of the Mountain, Hassan. Because of a too wide-ranging abundance of knowledge and an inexplicable mentality with tendencies that nobody can predict, he was feared as the one of "hundred visages", but in truth he was a character who suffered from a mental disorder known today as multiple personality.

Zabaniya.
A Noble Phantasm ability originated from the multiple personality from his lifetime.
The division that comes with multiple personality also carries out a division of one's own spiritual potential, making possible to take action as different individuals.
Because each personality manifests with their own respective bodies, there are various appearances of men and woman of all ages, of big frame and small stature.
Level 3 Bond
Because it "divides" oneself, the aggregate amount of powers remains the same even if the number of individuals increases.
Accordingly, the abilities of each individual declines the more they divide themselves, only the Personal Skill "Presence Concealment" suffers from no decay and they transform into an extremely excellent "intelligence organization" by making use of this to its maximum potential.
Level 4 Bond
If a divided individual dies, said individual is extinguished without being restored to the whole of Assassin.
It is not like there is something that can be called a superior "main body" that produces inferior "offshoots", rather all of Assassin are existences of same rank.
Level 5 Bond

The Assassin Heroic Spirit who participated in the Fourth Holy Grail War. One of the "Old Man of the Mountain" amongst the generations of Hassan-i Sabbah.
He was an exception in Hassans, as he did not undergo the body modification called "Zabaniya". Instead, he took advantage of his affliction of Multiple Personality Disorder and acted as an assassin without a true identity.
When summoned as a spiritual entity and emerged as a Servant, segments of his compartmentalized soul each materialized as an individual. However, due to the potential of the spirit being only that of one person, the abilities of the Assassins produced by the division were extremely low, reaching the nadir of the capabilities of Servants.
In addition, each personality has his strengths and weaknesses. Among them, there are impatient glory-hounds who ignore orders like fools, and individuals who are terrible at ambushes despite being assassins. However, if one can comprehend their characteristics and apply their skills in the right situations, the Hundred-Faced Hassan can be a very dangerous Servant. Unfortunately, because his Master had no intention of winning the war, he was damned to the fate of a voyeur.
The Hundred-Faced Hassan was summoned by Kotomine Kirei when he was still a lackey of Tokiomi Tohsaka, thus he was truly a servant of a servant. Even so, he still harboured a wish that he hoped the Grail could grant (by the way, it was "to have a perfect and unified personality"). He even plotted to hijack the Holy Grail before Kirei and Tokiomi, had the war have gone in their favour. However, in the end he did not even have a chance to show his rebellious side before becoming the first Servant eliminated from the war.
- ↑ 9.0 9.1 9.2 9.3 9.4 Fate/Grand Order material III Hassan of the Hundred Faces' Profile, translated by Beast's Lair User King of Padoru.

A plot in the 2nd or 3rd volume that went unused. This conceived character was one among the hundred-faced Hassans, an unfortunate loli that would lighten up the story. A young girl lacking conversational skills, memories, and the awareness that she was a part of Hassan Sabbah. That personality of this past Hassan would surface when she was captured by the enemy in order to protect her secret. When Rider and Waver attacked Gilles’ workshop, she alone separated herself from the Hassans who were beheaded, leading Waver to mistakenly think “This is one of the children who Ryuunosuke kidnapped, and who fell victim to memory loss” and take her under his wing. Although Iskandar knew that she was a Servant, because of Waver’s chivalry allowed the Mackenzies to take in yet another false household member. In the third volume, because Kirei (who knew of her existence) used his command spell, she regained her memories as Hassan, and went through a dramatic farewell tragedy. Waver again climbed another step on the path to becoming an adult…although it was conceived like this, it would make people even more confused about who was Zero’s main protagonist! Because of this judgment it was cut, leaving only the already-written workshop raiding scene.
- ↑ Fate/Zero Blu-ray Disc Box I, p.015
