Hisui (翡翠, Hisui?, Jade) is one of the five heroines of Tsukihime. Her character image song is PARADE, performed by Soft Ballet.

She is the younger of the two twin maids in the Tohno mansion. Her name, Hisui, is the Japanese word for jade, referring to her eye color.

Profile[]

Background[]

Hisui match 1

Young Hisui

Hisui was a member of a branch family of the Fujou clan, but was brought with her sister Kohaku to live in the Tohno mansion, because the Fujou clan had a special power of giving others energy. Makihisa Tohno needed this ability in order to keep control of his body.[4][5]

Hisui, however, was never forced to utilize her abilities as a Synchronizer because of the pleas of Kohaku and instead found herself living as a normal girl. When Shiki Nanaya arrived to the Tohno house, at first he was unwilling to adapt to his new home, still traumatized for the death of his father. However Hisui was the one who encouraged Shiki to go out and play in the house. Her childhood was pleasant, and even though she is not naturally an active person, upon seeing Shiki playing so energetically she did her best to keep up with him.

After Shiki went to live with the Arimas, Hisui learned that Makihisa raped Kohaku so she becomes depressed. Kohaku, noticing this, promises Hisui that she will "take on her role" until she was cheerful again. Ironically, it is because of those words that Hisui is unable to return to her old self.

Personality[]

Hisui appears as a stern young woman, but actually she is a kind, loving and emotional girl, hiding her emotions to keep her sister as she is, due to the incident with Makihisa. Seeing Kohaku acting happy as Hisui was as a young girl, she cannot bring herself to return to her former self. Even if Kohaku is simply acting out her old role, she seems to have attained some level of happiness.

Appearance[]

Hisui has short pink hair, like her sister, Kohaku. She wears a maid headdress on her head and a brown western maid uniform.

Arcueid and Ciel's routes[]

Because the events of Arcueid and Ciel keep Shiki away from the Tohno mansion, Hisui plays the role of cleaning maid to the Tohno family.

Hisui's route[]

Hisui after the Welcome Party

« Nee-san.... Why? That's fine. I was okay with the way I was. If you were happy, then I was happy. I...I was always protected by you, so.... »

(Hisui to Kohaku after she tries to kill herself - Hisui's route, Epilogue)

Shiki Tohno returns to the Tohno house after 8 years. He remembers a cheerful girl he got along with and a quiet girl who gave him a ribbon, but he cannot remember their names.[6] After meeting with Hisui and Kohaku, Shiki mixes the two maids up, believing Kohaku to have been the girl he always played with and Hisui the girl who stayed in the mansion. Hisui's demeanor has changed so much, that rather than being the active girl he knew as a child, she has become severe and emotionless.[7][8] During Shiki's Welcome Party, Hisui, not used to drinking but wanting to do it for Shiki, drinks only one glass and then falls asleep. Shiki carries her to his room so she can rest and then as he falls asleep he remembers that the first person he met at the Tohno house when he was a kid was a cheerful girl who convinced him to play outside with the others.[9] When he wakes up, he finds that Hisui is sleeping on top of him, but apparently nothing happened.[10]

Hisui, because she knows of the abuse inflicted upon Kohaku, refuses to let any male so much as touch her, the one exception being Shiki later in her path. Still believing Hisui to be the quiet girl who gave him the ribbon, Shiki gives Hisui the ribbon back.[10]

Shiki and Hisui

As the arc progresses more and more about her personality and who she truly is revealed. Rather than the stern, immovable young lady she appears to be, Hisui is revealed to be a kind, loving and emotional girl, who is hiding her emotions to keep her sister as she is. Becoming a daily part of Shiki's life, Hisui wakes him up every day and prepares his uniform.[11][12][13] However, she is hiding a darker secret, as she knows of her sister's plans for the downfall of the Tohno family, and after Shiki becomes paralyzed due to SHIKI Tohno stealing his life energy,[14][15][16][17] Hisui offers her ability to Synchronize with Shiki so that he can stop SHIKI. She then accompanies Shiki as he goes to the school.[18]

In Hisui's True Ending, after Kohaku reveals that she was responsible for the deaths of Akiha and SHIKI, she commits suicide by stabbing herself in the chest to end her "doll's existence". However she has no regrets since, due to her sacrifice, Hisui was never touched by Makihisa. Hisui begins a relationship with Shiki and later accompanies him on his vacations. Before going, she throws Kohaku's ribbon to the sky.[2]

Hisui ending 1

Hisui's Good Ending

In Hisui's Good Ending, after Kohaku reveals the truth about her participation in the downfall of the Tohno family, and claims that she hated Shiki for the silent connection between them (watching each other but never talking) Hisui appears and tells Kohaku that what she is saying is not true and that she truly loved Akiha and Shiki. She also tells her that if Kohaku was genuinely attempting to take on her role, using Hisui's original cheerful personality as her own, to never hate Shiki is an integral part of it. After Hisui's words, Kohaku ingests poison in order to commit suicide. She is saved by Shiki, who cuts the "lines" of the poison within her. She later loses her memory and she is renamed "Nanaya" by Hisui, and returns as a peaceful maid to the Tohno Mansion. After that, Hisui takes Shiki to her favorite spot to see the city together.[19]

It should be noted that in both endings, Hisui returns to be the cheerful girl she used to be.

Kohaku's route[]

« ...It started eight years ago. After you were adopted by the Arima family, I think I just became calmer than before. Nee-san tried to cheer me up by acting very happy, and then, we gradually traded our roles. »

(Hisui explaining to Shiki how she and her sister switched personalities - Kohaku's route, Day 7)

Hisui only plays a supportive role as Shiki's maid. Like in Hisui's route, he wants to give back the ribbon that the quiet girl who watched him from afar when they were young, gave him; but he mistakes that girl for Hisui. He tries several times to talk with Hisui about the ribbon promise, but she does not seem to remember it at all.

After Shiki starts regaining his memories about him being adopted, he asks Hisui about his childhood, but she refuses to give details. Shiki notices some discrepancies in her story and realizes Hisui was the cheerful girl he met when he was young, while Kohaku was forced to stay inside. Hisui gives up and tells him what happened between Kohaku and Makihisa years ago and why the sisters switched personalities. She's afraid Kohaku will return to her gloomy old self now that Shiki knows the truth, but he reassures it won't happen.[3]

Kagetsu Tohya[]

HisKoha

Hisui and Kohaku after became unrecognizable from each other.

In the Flower of Thanatos side story, which takes place in an artificial dream world, she and Kohaku live together with Shiki in the isolated Tohno Mansion, without Akiha or anyone else, where they humbly serve him by fulfilling his every wish. Shiki gradually grows bored of this and starts to seek escape from the recurring stereotype of this world. Because of this Shiki will start even periodically raping her and Kohaku but without any satisfying result. In the end in order to permanently change something he comes to the final choice between them. Depending on this choice, he then spends a night of passion with one of them, or both. If Shiki spends the night with both then Hisui and Kohaku gradually lose all their differences and becomes mirror-like couple, on which he's no longer able to recognize who is who. That finally allows him to love them truly equally and accept the artificial world as their personal paradise.[20]

Carnival Phantasm[]

HisuiCP

Hisui in Carnival Phantasm

« Shiki-sama, your skin will burn the sun if you don't do anything about it. »

(Hisui at the beach with Shiki and the girls - Carnival Phantasm, Episode 2)

Hisui has a minor appearance in Carnival Phantasm as one of the heroines of Tsukihime, appearing as a stoic maid who acts as the deadpan snarker to Kohaku. She constantly uses the wrong words when speaking, and also has the power of hypnotism (due to her fan nickname "Brainwasher Detective").

Abilities[]

Hisui normally lacks any sort of combat capabilities. She is a Synchronizer, which allows her to transfer energy through the exchange of bodily fluids. While it can be done with those of the same sex through a transfer of blood, it is most effective through sexual intercourse with someone of the opposite gender.[17][2][21] She has worked as a maid of the Tohno mansion for much of her life, which has made her extremely talented at most household tasks besides cooking. Even the simplest tasks in the kitchen are impossible for her, creating something nearly lethal no matter how easy the recipe. Kohaku happens to be strong at cooking while having the same kind of weakness with housework, so they tend to stick to their respective role.

During Melty Blood, under the influence of Night of Wallachia, White Len, or Dust of Osiris, she gains the ability to fight on par with all of the other strong inhabitants of Misaki. She makes use of a number of household items such as cleaning implements, cooking utensils, and even furniture like chair and tables as melee weapons. She brings them out of thin air, allowing her to attack with a number of different items in succession. She also gains the ability Fake Reality Marble: Guru Guru Hisui World (偽固有結界・ぐるぐる翡翠ワールド, Nise Koyū Kekkai・Guru Guru Hisui Wārudo?) and the Dark Jade Fist (暗黒翡翠拳, Ankoku Hisui Ken?).

Dark Jade Fist is the Arc Drive of Hisui in Melty Blood, based on the mystery story "Imogirisou" from Kagetsu Tohya. Reproducing the splendid action demonstrated by Hisui when she was possessed by the evil spirit, she stores up a mysterious energy while rotating both arm, then shoots it forward in a killer move. It appears that she is converting her complaints and dissatisfaction toward the excessively harsh manual labor she's put through every day in a similar manner to Wallachia's Malignant Information. It is useful for as projectile technique because it lingers after being launched to pressure the opponent. It becomes the Grand Dark Jade Fist (大暗黒翡翠拳, Dai Ankoku Hisui Ken?) during Blood Heat, showing the power to shake the earth itself.[22]

    Hisui [Person's name]
A sub-heroine in Tsukihime. A servant working at the Tohno mansion. Sympath.
She is a maid who sports an apathetic expression and an inflexible attitude. Though she seems to be the exact opposite of her older sister Kohaku in that regard, if you look carefully you can see she's actually demonstrating a wide variety of subtle expressions. Compared to Kohaku, who only ever wears an expression of "happiness", Hisui actually seems much more human.
She has been working as a servant ever since she was taken in by the Tohno family as a child. After Shiki was sent to live with the Arima, she began working inside the mansion, and stopped talking to people of her own accord. Also, because of what Kohaku went through as a child, she forbade herself from leaving the mansion.
Though, perhaps it's because her mental fortitude improved during the events of Tsukihime, but in Kagetsu Tohya she actually leaves the mansion of her own accord to bring Shiki his lunch.
She's a bit ashamed of it, but it seems that even though she tries her best to maintain conduct befitting a servant when she's in Shiki's presence, every once in a while her true colors slip out.
Just as Kohaku is incapable of cleaning up inside, Hisui's palate is hellishly out of sync with most people's. It seems the reason she never cooks for Shiki is entirely because she doesn't want to make him sad.
In the Kagetsu Tohya side story Imogirisou, she gets possessed by an evil spirit and demonstrates a strange form of martial arts. This was the inspiration for the Dark Jade Fist, her Arc Drive in Melty Blood.
Her super maid action in Melty Blood is a must see. The way her skirt flutters during her backdash is just… yeah.

    Hisui [Person's name]

Compared to Kohaku, who only ever wears an expression of "happiness", Hisui actually seems much more human.
Characterized by extreme fastidiousness and a fear of men. Just as Kohaku is naturally unsuited for cleaning up inside, Hisui's palate is hellishly out of sync with most people's. It seems the reason she never cooks for Shiki is entirely because she doesn't want to make him sad.
Normally she's not a character than can fight, but in Melty Blood due to the Tatari's generous interpretation of a maid as "one who protects their master by any means necessary", she acquired the legendary Maid-style Killing Arts.

    Synchronization [Unusual talent]
The ability to sympathize with other people. Putting it simply, it's giving one's own physical strength to somebody else. (Synchronizing with somebody else would be empathy.)
As Kohaku and Hisui are particularly talented sympaths, they don't just give their own physical strength, but also strengthen and support the mental and physical strength of their target.
Also, because this is sympathy and not empathy, even if the target is injured there won't be any feedback for the sympath. In game terms, it's like turning off collision detection.
The method of sympathizing varies depending on the practitioner. For some, it is possible to sympathize regardless of the target's will, while for others some sort of ritual is necessary.
The ritual is a switch on the spiritual plane passed down within a family, to control heretical abilities. It is a mental block implanted in the subconscious that prevents the ability from activating unless certain conditions are met.
…In other words, Hisui's family must have been a bunch of perverts, huh?
