Illyasviel von Einzbern (イリヤスフィール・フォン・アインツベルン, Iriyasufīru fon Aintsuberun?) is the main protagonist of Fate/kaleid liner PRISMA☆ILLYA. She also appears as Caster (キャスター, Kyasutā?), a Caster-class Servant summoned by Ritsuka Fujimaru in the Grand Orders of Fate/Grand Order.
Profile[]
Background[]
Illya differs from her Fate/stay night counterpart in many different ways. She was born directly to be utilized in the fourth Fuyuki Holy Grail War. She was given the knowledge needed at birth as a result. Her parents, Kiritsugu and Irisviel, had been discussing completely abandoning the ritual and the Einzbern family, and Irisviel was given the final choice. They decided when Illya was eight months old, and sealed her magical abilities and her memories up until that point. They remained within her as a separate personality, Kuro, that continued to accrue the same memories as her.
She was brought to Fuyuki from the Einzbern castle and raised as a normal child along with her adopted brother, Shirou. Their parents were away for long periods of time, so they were left with Sella and Leysritt much of the time. She had a normal life for ten years without any knowledge of her background, and had no idea about her parents' activities.
Appearance[]
She has basically the same appearance as her Fate/stay night counterpart, even though here she is younger. Being originally an Einzbern homunculi, Illyasviel has red eyes and long silver hair just like her mother, Irisviel. She wears many casual outfits but the more recognizable ones are her regular school uniform, summer school uniform and her pink Magical Girl outfit after contracting with Magical Ruby. While using Magical Sapphire, she wears a purple outfit, a little bit different from Miyu's.
In the Zwei Form where she wields both Magical Ruby and Magical Sapphire, her outfit changes to a purplish color with and she obtains cosmic-like wings. As a Card User she is able to install Class Cards and to obtain outfits and equipment of various Heroic Spirits. She only becomes able to do it by herself during her first fight with Beatrice Flowerchild.
When she installs the Saber Class Card, instead of summoning the King Arthur, Artoria Pendragon, she brings out the Princess Knight side of her.[3]
Personality[]
Illya exhibits a cheerful and positive attitude; but unlike her counterpart, she is shy, easily flustered, and more innocent at the beginning. In her first fight, she is shown to be agile but rather cowardly. Also, Illya is an ardent fan of anime, much to Sella's disappointment. She secretly harbors feelings for her brother, Shirou, something that Ruby highlights frequently much to her embarrassment. She is also rarely (if ever) clingy when with him unlike her Fate/Stay Night counterpart.
When interacting with her friends at school, she shares a dynamic relationship with them where she usually acts as the voice of reason, a role that is very much like a Tsukkomi (a person who throws punchlines). This is particularly expressed when it comes to suggestively lewd or comedically immoral situations. She has a rather intense fascination with maid outfits, though she does not like the official Einzbern maid outfit Sella puts on at one point.
As the series progresses, Illya matures into a strong individual who's willing to face overwhelming odds for what she cares about while also maintaining her innocent nature and strong morals. This is proven when Illya also wants to protect everyone, especially her friends. It is shown as Illya proclaims that she will help Miyu and her world, even though Julian stated that it is almost impossible.
This characterizes the immeasurable amount of kindness Illya possesses that she is considered a natural genius in becoming friends with her enemies.[4] Examples include Miyu, Chloe, Bazett, Gil, and Angelica.
Despite her growth in maturity, she still holds behaviors fitting of her age such as childish tempers, trying to act mature, and being stubborn towards things she dislikes. Like all young girls her age she adores cute things like animals and stuffed toys. In stark contrast to her original version, she really likes cats.

- Ruby: Illya? Illya? Down, Illya. Down!" [2]
- "Illya: Fufufu... Take a look at these, Kuro. Take a look at the overwhelming amount of outfits I can change into! I'm definitely better than you, since you only have one good―ouch! What was that for!? You don't need to smack me!
- Ruby: Fellow Archers getting along...how wonderful."[5]
- " 'Would you like me to lend you a swimsuit? Obviously it'll be a string bikini!' I think she'd respond well to that!"[6]
- Chloe von Einzbern
- "I heard Chloe's been messing with you again, Master... If you don't like it, you have to tell her! If you don't she'll, um... she'll take what she wants! All kinds of things!"[2]
- "She was looking at my swimsuit with envy."[6]
- "I must! Give my all! As the OLDER sister! But she is really reliable. But I have to say, she's also really cheeky!"[1]
- Child-Gil
- "I think he is a bit scarier than the Gil-kun that I know? But still, Gil-kun is Gil-kun."[1]
- Irisviel (Dress of Heaven)
- "Huh? Was that my mama's voice just now? Hmm, I must be hearing things. The way she was speaking was too elegant. Mama speaks more like... well, you know."[2]
- "Mmm, a goddess-like.... something... that looks like Mama but isn't actually Mama? Huh? There aren't really any change at all!?"[1]
- Irisviel (Dress of Heaven) / EMIYA (Assassin)
- "Ruby: Freely enjoying summer vacation away from parents... Mmm, that's every elementary school kid's dream.
- Illya: Well, I am enjoying myself...but I don't know about the whole "away from parents" part, since there's plenty of people acting like chaperones here..."[2]
- EMIYA (Assassin)
- "Uh, Mr. slightly-dark-skinned-professional-killer-who-looks-like-Papa-but-isn't-actually-Papa? U-Um, I think k-killing people is a bad thing to do!"[1]
- EMIYA

- "Although you're being so cold, and although I and the "I" that you know are different persons, but I do know that you're watching over me. But I never thought you'd cry from eating a mapo eggplant... Even though it doesn't taste any different."[1]
- "I'm going to forget about everything and focus on playing! ...At least that's what I decided to do, but the man in red at the cafeteria's been giving me a stern look... Okay, I'll try to do it in moderation! I'll play hard, but in an orderly way!"[2]
- Edward Teach
- "Um, I just saw a man with a black beard in the hallway. He made a weird noise the second he saw me and passed out...! What? It's ok to just leave him there? And I shouldn't ever go near him again? Whaaaat? Who was that man...?"[2]
- Sitonai
- "Illya: A girl who looks like me other than Chloe!?
- Ruby: Um, Miss Illya... Just between you and me, you may have it backwards...
- Illya: What do you mean!? ...Well, I kind of had a sneaking suspicion...
- Ruby: Of what?
- Illya: There are many people from various places here. Even though some may share the same face, they may have lived different lives. There's even some people here who've gone as far as going into space or wearing swimsuits. All of that mean it's completely possible for there to be a version of me who's an elementary school student and magical girl, right!?
- Ruby: I like that positive thinking! That's the spirit, Illya! Use that experience of dealing with Chloe here!
- Illya: Unnngh... The first step is to make friends with her... I hope it'll go okay..."[2]
- "That swimsuit, something like that is interesting...No! It's nothing!"[6]
- Kiara Sessyoin
- "Illya: H-huh? Was Miss Sessyoin always that big? I thought she was my size... But then again, the big Sessyoin is wonderful too! I can't put my finger on it, but she gives off the air of an elegant and refined person...like a graceful young lady raised with tender care.
- Ruby: Oh that person is actually registered on your "Servant restraining order" list.
- Illya: Why!? And what the heck is that list!?"[2]
- Abigail Williams
- "Illya: I ran into Abby in the cafeteria earlier. I tried to sit next to her to eat, but it was the scary Abby today.
- Ruby: Her attitude does differ daily. We need to be especially careful when she's in tentacle mode because it's hard to communicate with her.
- Illya: Yeah...and I panicked. But I knew I had to say something, so I blurted out: "takoyaki is delicious, don't you think!?" She looked really bewildered and used a really big word...sak-ree-ligious...or something. I guess non-Japanese people don't eat octopus."[2]
- "Hey! Senpai! I want you to teach me how to be a bad girl so Master can take care of me!"[6]
- Tomoe Gozen (Swimsuit)
- "(Sigh) Tomoe is so cool. She must be this super famous pro-gamer, seeing how she agile she is with those controllers... Huh? She's not? She's not a pro-gamer, but a dual-wielding swordmaster? Ha, that can't be true...!"[2]
Role[]
Fate/kaleid liner PRISMA☆ILLYA[]
Illya lives as a normal 10-year-old girl with her family in Fuyuki City, being enrolled in Homurahara Academy as a 5th grade student, not knowing her true nature as a Grail conduit. One day, when she's having a bath, she met Magical Ruby and accidentally made a contract. Rin then confronts her to take Ruby back, but Ruby refuses to return to Rin. So, Rin appoints Illya as her "servant", to collect the Class Cards that appeared in Fuyuki.[7]
In her first battle, she is cornered by the Rider Class Card manifestation until Miyu Edelfelt helped her. The next day, Miyu transferred to Illya's elementary school and instantly grabs attention with her talents. Meanwhile, Magical Sapphire explains Miyu's situation.
Her next enemy is the manifestation of the Caster Class Card. But Illya, with Rin, Miyu, and Luvia, got defeated very quickly. The only way to defeat Caster is to bypass her magic circle in the sky, so they must fly. Illya can fly easily because of her magical girl imagination, but Miyu can't. So, Illya helps Miyu to learn to fly.[8] In the end, Miyu still could not fly, but they could defeat Caster with two magical girls' teamwork.[9]
Suddenly, the manifestation of Saber Class Card appears and instantly defeat Rin and Luvia. Illya and Miyu then make a plan to defeat it: give the Kaleidosticks to the more experienced magus.[10] Rin and Luvia, in their Kaleid forms, seemed to win until Saber unleashes her black Excalibur. At this moment, Illya's seal of her Grail power cracked,[11] and she unconsciously Installed Archer Class Card. With Archer's abilities, she defeats Saber.[12]

In the fight against Assassin's Class Card manifestations, Illya unknowingly unleashed a devastating magical attack that demolished the enemies and almost killing Miyu, Rin, and Luvia. Scared of her dangerous power, she resigns from her duty as a magical girl.
With Illya leaving the team, Miyu confronts Berserker Class Card alone, and she is cornered. Meanwhile, Irisviel comes back and talks with Illya about life when she is away. Illya comes to realize her friendship with Miyu and decided to help her. Miyu Installed Saber Class Card to fight toe-to-toe with Berserker until God Hand kicks in, and at this time Illya came to help. Together, they defeat Berserker, and with his card, the Class Card collection is completed.
Fate/kaleid liner PRISMA☆ILLYA 2wei![]
Sometimes later, Rin and Luvia kidnapped Illya and Miyu to perform the next task from Zelretch, to stabilize the flow of mana in Fuyuki city. They came to the cave beneath Ryuudo temple and seemingly succeeding their task, but the cave collapsed. Illya, using her Grail power, installed the Archer Class Card again to save the party with Rho Aias. Suddenly, Kuro appears from within Illya and escaped.
The next day, Kuro attacks Illya and Miyu. She explains that her purpose is to kill Illya and take her place, and defeat the both of them before Illya shred her clothes. Rin and Luvia then organize a plan to capture Kuro, using Illya as a bait. They ultimately succeed, and Rin casts a pain-sharing curse to Kuro so she can't harms Illya anymore.
Kuro then transferred to Illya's school and kissing most of Illya's close friend (and Taiga), causing Illya to confronts her again. After dueling at a ball game, Illya protest to Kuro that she want her life to returns to normal, making Kuro fighting against Illya and Miyu again, because she doesn't want to be forgotten. In the fight, suddenly Irisviel appears and knocking both Illya and Kuro out. She then takes them to Luvia's bath. Kuro asked Irisviel about her true nature, apparently she is Illya's part of memory that sealed simultaneously with Illya's Grail conduit. She then began to disintegrating, but Illya gave her mana so that Kuro can still exists. Irisviel then introduce Kuro as Illya's distant cousin, so she stayed within Einzbern household. Illya and Kuro's relationship then become not unlike real sisters.
One day, Bazett appears to seize the Class Cards that Illya and the others collected. She defeats Luvia and her butler and later takes Illya, Miyu, and Kuro head-on, until Rin appears and use the same pain-sharing curse that Illya and Kuro have to her. Rin also told Bazett about the 8th Class Card and proposes to cooperate with her. After that, Bazett retreats.
After Illya, Miyu, and Kuro's birthday party at the beach, they confront the 8th Class Card with Bazett. With great teamwork, they seemingly win against the enemy until he draws Ea and destroy the Mirror World, escaping to the real world. Caren appears and explains that the 8th Class Card is going to Mount Ryuudo. Illya and Miyu confront the enemy, until Illya unknowingly pushes the manifestation, Gilgamesh out from its darkening form.
Gilgamesh explains that he came from a Holy Grail War in a parallel world, Miyu's homeworld and that Miyu is the Holy Grail of that world. Miyu then surrendered herself to Gilgamesh. To take Miyu back, Illya borrowed Sapphire's power to became Kaleid Liner Zwei Form. She then defeat Gilgamesh and saved Miyu.[13]
Suddenly, from the rift of the worlds that Ea created, Angelica and Beatrice Flowerchild appears and took Miyu to their world. Illya and her friends are transferred to that world as well.[14]
Fate/kaleid liner PRISMA☆ILLYA 3rei!![]
In the parallel world, Illya met Tanaka and encounters Beatrice again, until she is called by the Ainsworths. Illya and Tanaka then visit Kirei's ramen shop, where they met Gilgamesh again. He agreed to help fighting against Ainsworths, because "it is interesting".
At Ainsworth's castle, the party met parallel world Shirou who was captured. Angelica appeared and Gilgamesh fights against her announcing that she was his goal, whilst Illya and Tanaka escaped. Beatrice intercepts and wallops them, until Illya reunited with Ruby and fights back with Caster Install. Before Beatrice and Angelica took them seriously, they escaped. Kuro and Bazett then appear to assist them in escaping.
Using Illya's primary school as team's headquarters, Kuro then confronts Illya to know her true feelings about their situation. Illya defeat Kuro with Lancer Install, and confirmed that she will help Miyu whatever it takes. Bazett then spreads a rune bounded field to warns them against intruders, but Erika can bypass them because she holds no ill intent. After that, Darius Ainsworth came to pick up Erika, and in the process, hold off against the attack of Illya, Kuro, and Bazett with his unknown Noble Phantasms. After Tanaka destroyed his barrier Noble Phantasm, he retreated.
At night, Angelica used her hypnotism to capture Illya and insert her soul into a bear stuffed toy.[15] Illya then has an adventure in Ainsworth castle, where she met Beatrice discovered her obsession with Julian, and also Rin and Luvia who were hypnotized to become Ainsworth maids. After escaping from Rin and Luvia's cleaning attacks, Illya finds Sapphire and assumes Kaleid Liner Sapphire form. She fights back, and succeeds returning to her body, until Angelica ambushed her and began to explain the Ainsworths' true intentions to save the desperate world by using Miyu. Suddenly, Kuro comes to the rescue, stating that she would still choose Miyu over the world, which confuses Illya. After a battle between Angelica and Kuro, Illya finally exclaims that she would try to rescue both Miyu and the world.
Then, Kuro gives Illya all of her cards, and pairing Sapphire with Ruby, Gilgamesh, and Bazett which comes and hitting Luvia and Rin's seal, so their minds could return to their bodies. After that, Kuro destroys the Central Tower and Gilgamesh rushes to rescue Miyu's older brother.
After that, Illya flies in to rescue Miyu. Darius then tries to incapacitate Illya by using Crown Undertaker and Ninth Prayer, but Illya uses Saber Install, foiling those two Noble Phantasms. Illya then strikes at Darius with Saber's Sword, which has no effect. Illya then uses Rule Breaker via installing Caster's card to stab Darius' chest which successfully harms him allowing his facade to gradually fade, and makes him relocate the castle. Beatrice appears and attacks Illya, but Illya throws Sapphire to Miyu, and finally they reunite.
After relocating the Castle, Darius' Facade was completely destroyed, and revealing that he is actually Julian Ainsworth. Claiming he has to complete his Legend, he personally warns Illya not to intervene with his plans, and destroys Illya's Caster Card. Meanwhile, after the Pandora Box spawn endless army of Mud, he asks Miyu to return, which suddenly Illya interferes and asks Miyu not to return to the Ainsworths, which make Julian orders his Mud army to fire arrows at Luvia, Rin and Bazett. Then Emiya Shirou appears, blocking the arrows with Rho Aias and helps them to fight the Ainsworths. Together with Kuro, they defeat Angelica even after she accelerated the Noble Phantasms to an unreactable speed. Following her defeat, Shirou rushes to Julian brandishing Kanshou and Bakuya.
Sakura suddenly appear as the last line of defence for Julian when Shirou attacks him. Seemingly appearing from the mud below Julian's feet, she attacks using the power of the Berserker, Lancelot. Catching him by surprise, she severely wounds him. Stating that she had been waiting for him a very long time, she is attacked from behind by Miyu, who uses the Gilgamesh class card to attack. Despite he onslaught of weapons Miyu uses, Sakura is able to take control of them. Before Miyu can launch into another barrage, her personality starts to be overtaken by that of her own class card, and Julian interrupts, taking the Archer card from her.
No longer possessing that power, Sakura proves overwhelming, nearly killing Miyu before Julian once again intervenes. Using the power of his Assassin class card, Julian restrains Sakura and Miyu and, taking Shirou's image, convinces her to halt her assault. She is last seen being dragged back into the mud by the Assassin's Noble Phantasm.
After that, Julian is confronted by Gilgamesh, who tells him that his wish can't come true unless he has two Holy Grails to accomplish it. Gilgamesh then notices Erica, and after hearing her, he notices something, laughs, and telling the Ainsworths he's going to enjoy watching it, and disappears from sight when Beatrice swings Mjolnir at him.
While in the abandoned school, Tanaka reawakened. Illya is struggling defending Rin who tries to heal Emiya Shirou's wound. She charges Excalibur with Magical Energy and succeeded to blow away a lot of the Mud creatures. But her mana is depleted because of that, and Julian simply stated that the Mud Creatures will reform and endlessly swarm them. Tanaka, from the distance throws her hand, revealed to be a Sword, to Illya. The sword proves to be lethal against the Mud and Pandora Box. Illya succeeded in stopping Erica and the Pandora Box, and proclaimed to Julian that this is her victory. Julian then permits Beatrice have two swings of Mjolnir, which she gladly does. But Illya and Miyu survived thanks to Shirou's Rho Aias. As this occurred, Rin successfully heals Shirou with the gem on her necklace found by Bazett.[16]
After that, the glowing hot red sword turned into a arm/hand which begins to tease Illya and chasing her and unbeknownst to Illya, it was actually Tanaka's hand. Shirou then invited them to his house, which all agrees, even Angelica, which has been rescued by Illya earlier. Upon arriving at the house, all members except for Shirou and Miyu were surprised at the immense size, saying that it was comparable to a mansion. Illya and Kuro took a bath, and discusses Miyu's identity, while Tanaka's hand comes and touch them. Surprised, they threw the hand. That hand reveals that it is Tanaka's, which shows them they haven't picked up Tanaka yet from the school. After that, Illya and the others present in the living room, preparing to hear Miyu and Shirou's story about them.[17]
Illya learns of Miyu's and Shirou's pasts, from how they met, to how Miyu became Shirou's actual little sister, Matou Sakura's death, Julian, the Ainsworths Holy Grail War, Shiro's involvement in the war, the Archer Card's identity, and how Miyu came to Illya's world. Therse revelations bring Illya to tears and she tells Shirou what happened to Miyu in her own world. [18]
Later, as she and the others were lying in bed, she and Chloe talk about how similar yet different the Shirou of Miyu's world compared to her own, with Chloe muttering how not simple salvation really is. As she walks outside, she catches a glimpse of Miyu's Shirou talking to Angelica, commenting on how similar she is to Julian and deducing that she is the latter's older sister. He then proceeds to ask for Darius' identity since their true father is Zachary. Tanaka appears out of nowhere, answering that he is the All-father of the Ainsworths, with Angelica confirming it and proceeding to ask Illya to save Julian.[18]
Fate/Grand Order[]
Event: Prisma Causeway[]
Illya and Miyu Edelfelt were on their way to the Mirror World when the First Lady summoned them into her Reality Marble.[19][20] They were attacked by Connacht ☆ Medb, allowing the First Lady disguised as one of Medb's familiar to capture Miyu.[21] Not knowing the truth, Illya blamed Medb and demanded she gives Miyu back. She tried fight but Magical Ruby fled, so she is struck Medb's chariot.[19]
She recovers and catches up to Medb as she is overwhelming Mash. Impressed Illya survived getting hit by her chariot, Medb invites her into her army. Illya refuses and demands Medb to return Miyu. She then has Ruby transform her into her Magical Girl form, and she easily overwhelms Medb. Her next attack meant to finish Medb off is blocked, though, by Medb's familiar, Mini Cu. After Medb and Mini Cu leave, Illya suddenly returns to normal because of the magical energy feed from Ruby not stabilizing for some reason. She then explains her circumstances to Ritsuka and Mash. She also realizes she cannot Install and that Miyu must not be able to. When Ritsuka compares her to a Magical Girl, they and Mash are contacted by Romani Archaman. He reveals they’re inside a Reality Marble.[19]
Mash asks Romani to give Illya temporary refuge in Chaldea. He refuses though as only her, Ritsuka, and their Servants can rayshift back. Chaldea also cannot intervene too much with other eras. But Mash reveals Illya is from a parallel world, and there wouldn’t any era interference since events are inside a reality marble. Illya refuses to take refuge in Chaldea, needing to save Miyu. Romani orders Ritsuka and Mash to return to Chaldea, but Mash stays to protect Illya.[22]
While Ritsuka is gone, Illya and Mash encounter the people of the Land of Sweets. Mash tries to ask them for information, only for the candylanders to abduct her and Illya to their kingdom. Illya tries to ask if they've seen Miyu but her question goes unnoticed. Ruby then returns with Ritsuka, and the group fights the candylanders. Most however flee upon learning that Illya is a Magical Girl. Illya uses this to her advantage to get information. Learning the queen may know more, the group head for Candy Castle.[23]
While heading towards the castle, the group are confronted by what appears to be Tamamo Cat.[24] However, after defeating her, they discover her to be a Mystic Code copying Cat’s form before breaking under the strain.[25]
Arriving in Candy Castle, the group is greeted by the queen, Nursery ☆ Rhyme. While having a tea party with her, Illya asks Nursery ☆ Rhyme if she or her people have seen Miyu. Nursery ☆ Rhyme promises to tell what she knows in exchange for playing with her. llya replies they can play later, but Nursery ☆ Rhyme refuses as her only playmate is a black sheep. It turns out to be the Demon God Glasya Labolas. Nursery ☆ Rhyme then proceeds to "play" with the group.[25]
Afterward, Nursery ☆ Rhyme tells Illya to stop searching for her friend upon learning she is a Magical Girl. She explains that Magical Girls in this world disappear once they stop "playing." But those who did their best can make their own kingdom. Nursery ☆ Rhyme lists off all the kingdoms she knows of, including her own. She then gives Illya her jewel as thanks for playing with her and Glasya Labolas. She believes it will help Illya find her friend. Outside the caste, the jewel glows and points toward the Land of Dragons and Sea.[26]
The group sails through the ocean when they're boarded by Dragon Tooth Warriors.[27] After destroying them, they meet Medical ☆ Medea. Illya and Ruby recognize her from their memories of fighting a Medea in their world. Medea demands to know which kingdom’s Magical Girl they killed to get her jewel. Illya explains Nursery ☆ Rhyme gave it without bloodshed. Realizing they’ve come to take her jewel, Medea invites the group to her castle.[28]
In her throne room, Medea offers to never interfere with the group's affairs if they never interfere with her kingdom. But she'll never hand over her jewel, as it supports her kingdom and grants her power. She then reveals the kingdoms were founded as a result of a conflict between the Magical Girls. Equating the loss of her jewel to her own death, Medea demands the group leave her kingdom. She tells Illya to use her jewel to create a kingdom filled with friends. Illya refuses to do so as she only wants to return home with Miyu. However, Medea reveals Magical Girls cannot leave the Reality Marble and tells Illya she'll use the jewel's power in the end. She continues that Illya should give up on Miyu, revealing Nursery ☆ Rhyme disappeared after giving her jewel as they're what keep Magical Girls alive. Illya refuses to give up though, which makes Medea finally snap and fight the group.[29]
Refusing to be defeated, Medea prepares to transform into her adult self. Illya stops her, however, saying she'll find a way to save Miyu without Medea's jewel. She also believes Medea created her kingdom to fight for something dear to her. But Mini Jason reveals Medea created her kingdom out of debt to him, and she's been protecting her jewel out of fear of other Magical Girls. He also says she isolated herself to keep herself from becoming a witch. He then gives Medea's jewel to Illya, not wanting Medea to become a witch. Medea accepts the outcome but remains silent on the subjects of Magical Girls fighting as it'll only bring back sad memories.[30]
Following the light of the jewels, the group arrives in the Land of Dead Bookshelves. Mash notices a large black wall that Romani cannot scan past. A ghost then appears, but the group ignores it since it is passive. After the ghost departs for the black wall, the group continues onto the land’s center. But the jewels' light stops leading them, so Illya transforms to get an overview of the area. However, she and the others are attacked by ghosts that eventually prove too strong and numerous for them. Mahatma ♀ Helena arrives and reveals the land is the graveyard of Magical Girls, and the ghosts are theirs. Recognizing Romani’s communications as a leyline directly linked to a parallel world, Helena realizes “she” found a way to the outside world. She then brings the group into her library so she may continue talking without danger.[31]
Inside her library, Helena explains the ghosts of Magical Girls are called Echoes. She also reveals the Reality Marble was created by the First Lady residing beyond the black wall. She then tries to give her jewel to the group, unconcerned that the Echoes will attack her without it. She also informs Illya of the truth of Miyu's kidnapping. Illya refuses to take the jewel, but Helena reveals the jewels are needed to bypass the black wall as they’re the crystallized emotions that grant wishes. She warns though the First Lady is likely gathering the jewels to use them to escape to the outside world. But she advises against fighting her as the First Lady’s power in the Reality Marble is absolute. She then demands Illya take her jewel, forcing Illya to fight her.[32] After she's defeated, Helena accepts Ritsuka's offer to join their group.[33]
Returning to the Neutral Zone, Illya says she wants to check on Nursery ☆ Rhyme, even though the jewels' light is pointing towards the Land of Snow and Honey. Helena reveals Medb is forming a rebellion against the First Lady, which explains Medb trying to recruit Illya earlier. After slaying Medb’s monsters, Ritsuka and Mash lose contact with Romani. He reestablishes contact but reveals Chaldea's Servants just repelled an assault on the facility using its leyline connection. He gives Ritsuka and Mash five minutes to decide whether to return to Chaldea or stay with Illya. Suddenly it starts to snow, signifying that Medb is attacking the surrounding lands. Ruby has Mash return to normal as her power is solely dependent on Ritsuka’s magical energy with the connection with Chaldea now cut. After the group decides to stay and help Illya, Ruby has Illya teach Mash how to recharge her magical energy through kissing. Romani then reestablishes contact to hear Ritsuka and Mash’s decision.[34]
After Ritsuka and Mash tell Romani of their decision, the group travels to the Land of Sweets, which has been assimilated into the Land of Snow and Honey. There they fight Mini Cu's monsters despite Mash being weakened in Medb’s territory. After his monsters are slain, Mini Cu prepares to unleash his Noble Phantasm, Gentle Bite Coinchenn, on Illya, even though he knows Medb wants to recruit her. Mash protects Illya when Magical Sapphire suddenly appears. Sapphire agrees with Ruby’s request to temporarily contract with Mash since she is Illya’s ally. After Sapphire contracts with Mash, Mini Cu retreats as Helena tells him to tell Medb that Illya has two jewels. Sapphire then plays a message from Miyu. Miyu reveals she is imprisoned in the First Lady's castle, and the latter has been luring Magical Girls from different worlds into the Reality Marble. She suspects it's for a nefarious purpose, and it's related to her captivity. She then ends the message warning Illya not to come. Sapphire believes Miyu doesn’t want Illya to come because she knows something about the First Lady’s true identity. Helena only heard that the First Lady was the first Magical Girl.[20]
After Helena gives her jewel to Illya, the group enters Medb's castle without Helena. Inside the throne room, the group confronts Medb. She tries and fails to convince Illya that Ritsuka and Mash are secretly trying to conquer her world. She then offers to help Illya save Miyu in exchange for them joining her, saying they'll make Ritsuka and Mash into their slaves. Ritsuka realizes Medb is fighting against despair after she mentioned her servitude under the First Lady led to the deaths of many Magical Girls. Illya refuses to believe that, however, as Medb's attack on her and Miyu made it possible for Miyu to be kidnapped and states Medb is also trying to invade Chaldea. Ritsuka says the First Lady is at fault, not Medb, which greatly enrages the latter. Mini Cu launches his Noble Phantasm at Ritsuka, but Mash and Illya block it. Reinvigorated by Mini Cu, Medb fights the group.[21]
After being defeated, Medb confesses her army was for those Magical Girls who had nowhere left to go. Illya realizes Medb considered the Magical Girls who disappeared her comrades. Medb's heart finally breaks, and as a result, her castle begins to collapse. Ritsuka and Illya plead with Medb to come with them. But Mini Cu tells them that's impossible as Medb can no longer bear the strain of forcibly interfering with parallel worlds. The group then escapes the collapsing castle, leaving Medb and Mini Cu to disappear together. Medb’s jewel appears in Mash’s hand. Illya returns Helena’s jewel to her. With all four jewels, the group can now bypass the black wall.[35]
Returning to the Neutral Zone, the group watches the black wall disappear. Illya, Ruby, and Sapphire fly up to get an overview of the First Lady’s kingdom. Sapphire senses a change in the castle. Illya asks what is when the First Lady's familiars approach. She, Ruby, and Sapphire rejoin the others and warn them of the approaching familiars.[36] They eventually breakthrough and enter the First Lady's kingdom.[37]
As they head closer to the First Lady's castle, the group is attacked by a large enemy force. Using power borrowed from Ruby and Sapphire, Illya initially tries to hold off the enemy herself so the others can go on ahead. She eventually exhausts herself, though, fighting so many enemies. Helena tells her to pull herself together and spanks her on the behind. She then confesses her surprise at how much spirit she has shown, having thought she was a fake Magical Girl before. Impressed by it, she takes over for Illya so the latter can meet with the First Lady with Ritsuka and Mash.[38]
Inside the First Lady’s throne room, the group sees Chloe von Einzbern on the throne. Chloe reveals that she and Miyu have been in the Reality Marble for a very long time, though she’s been in it since the beginning. The group finds Miyu restrained by the Anti-Magical Girl Mystic Code, Voile de Deuil, part of which turns into hostile familiar when Mash tries to check Miyu’s condition. Chloe reveals that she secretly followed Illya and Miyu into the Mirror. She ended jumping into the Reality Marble but became trapped, arriving during the Magical Girls conflicts. She hid her presence but her magical energy soon depleted. That was when she met the First Lady through her familiar. She calls her appearance in the Reality Marble an inevitability as the First Lady turned her against Illya by calling her an accessory to Illya. Illya denies that, but Chloe projects a weapon in response and fights her.[39]
Their shared pain puts Chloe at a disadvantage when she reveals she is the First Lady’s vessel. The First Lady then possesses her. She explains her history and how her desire to spread the Magical Girls’ magic of love and hope throughout the world attracted Echoes to the Reality Marble. She attempted to use them to grant her wish by giving them temporary bodies and bodies, but it failed because they weren't real Magical Girls. That is when she met Chloe and made her into her vessel. With Miyu’s power, the First Lady will incarnate the Echoes into Magical Girls and spread them across parallel worlds to save people. She’ll soon absorb Miyu as Chloe resists assimilation with her. Miyu asks Illya to help Chloe and the First Lady both, saying the latter has an impossible wish in her heart. Chloe briefly takes back control of her body before the First Lady retakes control. The First Lady reveals her and Chloe’s desire for Miyu allowed her to break through the latter’s mental wall and fully control her body. Once Miyu is emotionally broken by seeing the group dead before her, she’ll use Miyu to reach infinite parallel worlds. The group then fights the First Lady to save her from herself.[40]
With the First Lady defeated, Chloe slowly regains control of her body, and Miyu is freed. Urged by Miyu, Illya confesses to the First Lady that she would be overwhelmed if she had the power to save the world. But if her friends and family are in danger, she will use her magic without hesitation. The First Lady sees her old self in Illya and recalls how she killed her best friend to protect the world when she refused to be a Magical Girl. Helena then arrives and takes everyone outside.[41]
There they encounter the passive Echo from before. Ruby has it possess Illya; the First Lady recognizes her as her friend Mila. Mila became an Echo since she was a Magical Girl, even if it was for a brief time. After Mila explains her circumstances, Helena convinces the First Lady to give her ownership of the Reality Marble so it can serve as a refuge for wounded Magical Girls to stop them from becoming like the First Lady. The First Lady and Mila then reconcile and disappear. Illya and Chloe find themselves holding hands. Illya expresses admiration for how Ritsuka and Mash can help others, even though they're suffering more than anyone. She believes only someone like that can save the world. Afterward, everyone uses the power of the jewels to return their respective worlds.[41]
Parvati Trial Quest[]
Jaguar Man drags Illya with her when she confronts Parvati in a bamboo forest about joining Chaldea. Illya is confused that Jaguar Man calls her "Student Ex". Jaguar Man convinces her to help test Parvati's resolve to join Chaldea by saying she'll do her homework for a week if they win. They lose, leaving Illya disappointed that she has to do her homework herself. She is also left exhausted by Jaguar Man's antics, finding that she seems familiar. She leaves after Ritsuka says they'll do her homework.
Hokusai Trial Quest[]
Illya and Chloe appear in Ritsuka's dream of Edo under the names of Illysue and Kakuloe respectively. They are taking a leisure trip through the country with Old Meowster.
Old Meowster purchases a ukiyo-e from a suspicious merchant who claimed it was a genuine Katsushika Hokusai piece. She sensed it was painted by Hokusai's daughter, Oei, yet it had Hokusai's signature. So she sends out Kakuloe and Illysuke to find Oei to verify the piece.
Kakuloe and Illysuke eventually find Oei with Ritsuka and Suzuka Gozen on their way to Hosshou Temple. Calling Old Meowster, they have Oei verify the ukiyo-e. Oei confirms it is real, leading Old Meowster to believe that her appraisal was correct. Her feral instincts then kick in, as if ready for a fight. Illysuke tells it's too early for that, only for Old Meowster to shove her toe beans in her face. While Illysuke deals with that, Kakuloe tells Oei why they sought her out. Unfortunately, she triggers a fight with the group when Oei is angered by the implication that she is lying to herself about not caring whether the piece was made by Hokusai or not.
The fight stops though when Oei suddenly collapses. After being tended to by Suzuka and Illysuke, Oei confesses the piece was a collaboration between her and her father. Ever since then she has painted many pieces under her father's name. Illysuke wonders if that means some sections of the paintings are counterfeit, but Suzuka explains ukiyo-e are collaborative efforts in general. Therefore, the name "Katsushika Hokusai" is closer to a brand name. Oei then signs the piece as per Old Meowster's request after Ritsuka and Suzuka convince her. Ritsuka then asks about the art dealer that sold the piece. Illysuke recalls there were two and carried things labeled "Seiseidou" and "Kitsurudou". Oei recognizes those names as publishers from the Utagawa School, but she doesn't recall selling any Hokusai work to them. Learning she overpaid for the piece, Old Meowster asks Illysuke and Kakuloe to do a bit of erotic modeling for the Hokusai, for which they'll sign a royalty agreement. Illysuke and Kakuloe refuse, though Kakuloe jokes Illysuke may enjoy it.
Final Singularity: Solomon[]
Illyasviel is among the Servants to assist Chaldea against the Demon Gods Pillars.
Other appearances[]
Abilities[]
While she wields the Kaleidostick, Magical Ruby, she is granted A~Rank Magical Barrier, Physical Protection, Accelerated Healing and Increased strength.[7] Due to her free spirited nature, Illya was also able to learn how to fly, a difficult technique, without effort, because she believes that "all magical girls can fly". This level of imagination can even allow her to move and speak in the body of a stuffed animal that her mind was transferred to.
As a Lesser Grail, Illya possesses unnaturally high magical output,[12] though it is greatly reduced after Chloe was created. To compensate the loss in output, she devised ways to refine the shape and utilization of her attacks. An example is a technique called Schneiden, a thin blade of magical energy with high cutting power and low cost. Another example is how she has demonstrated a clever usage of her magical barriers. She created a barrier technique called Pyramid where she deployed a forward physical shield in the shape of a pyramid[42] and used her barriers as forms of restraints.[43]
When wielding both Magical Ruby and Magical Sapphire, she is able to enter a new powerful form called Zwei Form.[13] This transformation grants her an immeasurable boost in her magical girl abilities that makes her a match against Gil and Gilgamesh together. However, this takes an extreme toll on her body as it turns every part of her body, primarily the muscular, nervous, vascular and lymphatic tissues, into a Magic Circuit. Ruby points that such a form can potientially cease all her body functions, killing her which makes it a last resort.[14][44]
She possesses a strong mental fortitude that makes her immune to brainwashing and can protect her memories and emotions in a conceptual space that Chloe left when the two separated.[15] This strong will has also made her more resistant against Berserker's Mad Enhancement.
After sacrificing herself to reset the timeline using Starlog, Illya now has reality warping powers, at least within the new world Darius Ainsworth sought, as shown when she destroyed a part of her house to show Darius the consequences of his wish. She is able to even restore Darius' whole, younger form. [45]
Skills[]
Class Skills[]
- Magic Resistance (B Rank): A powerful magic boundary granted to the transforming Illya. Invalidates Magecraft with chant 3 verses or less. Unable to defend against large scale magecraft such as greater magecraft and ritual spells.[1] Furthermore, during her transformed status her physical protection, healing acceleration, and physical ability and such are strengthened, exerting an effect to each of her status.[1]
- Infinite Mana Supply (C Rank): A literally infinite supply of Magical Energy from the Kaleidostick. But due to the output being restrained by the user's own Magic Circuit's ability, Illya still yet to be able to show the stick's original power.[1]
Personal Skill[]
- Cheerful Model Mystic Code (A Rank): The self-proclaimed Ruby. Formal name "Magical Ruby." It is made by the old geezer sorcerer of the jewel. Within the sorcery stick dwells a natural man-made Spirit. Unnaturally obsessed with magical girls; although it supports its user, it stubbornly refuses to accept things other than magical girls. As long as it's having fun, everything's fine. So, cheerful-type.[1]
- Child of Nature (B Rank): A miracle born of her father, Kiritsugu Emiya and her mother, Irisviel, hoped to to live a normal life. Those miracle and love is bundled within the pure Illya, granting a blessing unto her.[1]
- Shining into the Future (A Rank): Upgrade from Child of Nature (Fate/Grand Order)
- Suspicious Medicine (A Rank): Ruby's handmade magic potion. Its effect is quite extraordinary, but you just can't have any confidence in it. At least until you drink it yourself anyway.[1]
Noble Phantasm[]
Illyasviel's Noble Phantasm is Quintett Feuer.[1]
Forms and Alternate Versions[]
Swimsuit[]
Even Magical Girls want to play!
Taking off and throw away her identity, the Magical Girl turns into a simple elementary school student who is fully prepared for this summer. She's somewhat more excited than normal, while her IQ and good luck is on the decline. To sum it up, it's Illya-san in comedy-mode. Although it general won't fare well for her, she would still not be deterred from showering people with her smiles and tears.
Ruby is in the process of shifting into "Splash Mode" in the form of a hose reel and nozzle. Even if its appearance has changed, the nuisance that, as always, flies about on its own here and there and disturbs the place, is still going strong.
She also left the Cards behind in her room.
Illya had a sudden realization that day.
"While you are in Chaldea, you can have unlimited summers.....?"
The smart Illya-san is someone who made proper plan and would finish her homework in the first half of the summer vacation, however, that left her with nothing to do in the later half. Now, that later half is stretching on infinitely.
"It's fine to play now, isn't it......? Time for swimsuit......?"
The unexplainable desire to make merry and forget about her troubles is increasing every day. Speaking of which, during summer every year, a portion of the Servants gets a little loose in the head.
Miyu said it was "Some sort of endemic disease." What the, it's scary. Kuro said "The more serious the person normally is, the more serious their symptoms." Please stop scaring me. Ruby said "I'm going to give you a vaccination to prevent that." Wah, in that case I'm relieved.
"So you said but Ruby!? What was that injection...... It's hot! My body is......! My Spirit Origin is...... becoming Summer......!"
Thus, she was transformed into a Swimsuit Spirit Origin.
Personality[]
Regardless of the circumstances, Illya, whose body and mind has changed into Summer, made it her top-most challenge to "go all out on the summer vacation with everything she has".
No matter where you bring her, she would gladly play around. It seems together with reasons', her restraints for food has also loosened, and she does things like talking excessively about food. "Basically I would eat anything. The meals are delicious." "I'm not getting fat. This is healthy growth." "......I said I'm not getting fat!"
Abilities[]
Class Skills:
- Magic Resistance (A Rank): A powerful magical barrier given to Illya during her transformation. Nullifies spells A rank or bellow. Modern day mages can't harm elementary school students who are having fun during summer vacation![6]
- Independent Action (B Rank): Ability to stay in the world for a while even if the supply of magical energy from the Master has been cut off.[6]
- Infinite Mana Supply (C Rank): The kaleidostick literally supplies an infinite amount of magical energy. Illya suspects that her (slight) increase in weight has to do with an excessive supply of magical energy.[6]
Personal Skills:
- High Pressure! (A Rank): A skill that raises the discharge power of the hose, increasing its water pressure. By the way, even though it's called "water", it is actually something that Ruby manufactered using its magical power to give it that summer feeling, what comes out of the nozzle changes from time to time as well.[6]
- Summer Vacation! (Child) (A Rank): Elementary school students during summer vacation are invicible. (They feel) They could do anything, and (they feel) that they have all the time in the world.[6]
- Regal Shower! (B++ Rank): Filled with Ruby-chan's carefully made herb extract (deadly poison). The volatile ingredients come into effect not only via skin contact, but also from inhaling them even just a little. "However, due to the sophisticated selective toxicity, it's not only harmless to Illya-san, but comes with the effect of raising her power of concentration!" While it contains ingredients that would make even a Hydra recoils in shock, it is totally harmless, so her parents can also be relieved.[6]
Noble Phantasm[]
Illya's Noble Phantasm is Prisma☆Splash Rainbow!.[6]
Development[]
Creation and Conception[]
Illyasviel von Einzbern (Fate/kaleid) and Illyasviel von Einzbern (Archer) were written and designed by Hiroshi Hiroyama in Fate/Grand Order.[1][6]
Comments from Illustrator[]
Illyasviel von Einzbern (Fate/kaleid)[]
"Uniform -> normal form -> Zwei form. Because there're already stages of form change that fits the game system, curiously I didn't need to puzzled over it too much and just put the orthodox finishing touches. Because the normal form is the design from back then, I feel like some parts are really shoddy. But still, now that I have drawn for many years, I no longer fumble with the balance. The big mantle is a respect of sort to the first generation Kaleido Ruby. By the way, Illya already has, like, 8 different battle costumes already, so...wouldn't there be a Costume Dress unlock in the future? Please?" (Hiroshi Hiroyama)[1]
Illyasviel von Einzbern (Archer)[]
"With the theme of Summer + Archer I knew I had to get fired up and think of something, but it felt like I had already run out of ideas! So after much thought I came up with the hose reel. Ruby's mood has been steadily getting worse yet she has become more and more popular. The mysterious cat headdress is made out of toweling not fur. The initial idea for her second ascension was a graceful style called "wrap towel" but for some reason the boss didn't approve of it. Damn! I think I overdid it with the facial expressions, but I drew the faces that I thought were necessary for Illya's role in the story, and this is what I came up with. I am grateful that they were able to be used effectively." (Hiroshi Hiroyama)[6]
