Jeanne d'Arc (ジャンヌ・ダルクWP, Jan'nu Daruku?), Class Name Ruler (ルーラー, Rūrā?), is the Ruler-class Servant in the Great Holy Grail War of Fate/Apocrypha. She is one of the Servants of Ritsuka Fujimaru of the Grand Order conflicts of Fate/Grand Order.

Profile[]

Identity[]

Jeanne d'Arc, the Standard-Bearer who Correctly Guides the Holy Grail War (聖杯戦争を正しく導く旗手, Seihai Sensō wo Tadashiku Michibiku Kishu?), was the Saint of Orleans. A Catholic saint born in 1412 Domrémy, FranceWP, and the heroine of France who liberated OrléansWP in the Hundred Years' WarWP.[2]

Life[]

Jeanne d'Arc was a common farmer's daughter. She claims she had received the command of God to fight. She heard the Lord’s lament that the world changed straight into hell. The Lord wept into sorrow as no one could stop it and people were not even allowed to live simply, and were compelled to become either beasts or food. Conflict never ended, and blood continued to rain incessantly and soak the land. She received a revelation from the Lord, the voice contained no glory or victory, no obligation or sense of purpose but only the Lord laments. She caught his small, feeble murmurs that everyone else failed to hear.

She responded by throwing away her life as a simple villager and the joy of loving someone and being loved back. Furthermore, there would be no compensation. She knew she would surely be scorned by the masses of both enemies and allies alike, considering their beliefs in the church's guidelines for proper behavior in women. It was a very terrifying thing to contemplate. It was mad for a mere village girl from the countryside to leap onto the battlefield where people’s killing intent swirled about. She would not turn her back on the Lord's cries. She decided to devote her life to oppose this world’s hell to help stop the Lord’s tears and soothe Him. She clad her armour on her body, hung a sword on her waist and carried the flag. She fought alongside with Gilles de Rais.

Having been born to a peasant family, Jeanne never knew the contents of the many books of prayer. She did try hard to learn them, but it seems she was simply born incapable of reading or writing. The most she ever managed was learning how to sign her name. While she worried about this, in the end, she decided that she needed little more in order to pray to the Lord. As she recalled, one of her comrades whom rode beside her, Gilles, once laughed and promised her that this was more than enough.

They say that in reality all that happened was that she used tactics that the knights of that time didn't use out of contempt and honour. It is believed by Mikiya Kokutou that she utilized the Counter Force in her deeds.[9]

Both Jeanne and Gilles were decorated as saviors and national heroes by King Charles in the cathedral with the Ars NovaWP melody playing in the background.[10]

Death[]

Jeanne was put to death at Place du Vieux-Marché in RouenWP the 30th of May 1431. Scorned by words of damnation as she was led to the pyre and feeling only slightly pained as she endured it, she had already abandoned emotions such as fear, disappointment, and regret from the outset of her battles, so she was able to walk towards her death without faltering in her steps. As she unconsciously reached for the cross that had been at her chest until they took it from her, she felt some sadness as there was nothing to support her heart. Shortly after, she was given a wooden cross fashioned by an Englishman who revered her, thanking him quietly as he knelt and wept. Her hands were tied to a wooden stake behind her, and the priest present completed the recitation of her final judgement before throwing the torch upon the pyre. As they believed that the loss of the flesh was the greatest of fears, it was the cruelest punishment that could be laid upon her.

The flames began to burn her skin, scorch her flesh, and char her bones, all while she spoke the name of the Lord and the Holy Mother against those who denounced her prayers as only a lie. She could only find such thoughts strange, believing that prayers are nothing more than prayers, no matter to whom is prayed, that carry no intrinsic truths or falsehoods. Although she wished to tell them of the thought, she was unable to produce any sound. As she burned, she saw visions of her past, her ordinary family in her rustic village and herself, "the fool who ran away and tossed all of that aside." Having known how her journey would end from the start, she felt that she may have certainly been foolish in her actions, that she may have been able to have lived a regular life, gotten married, and lived together with her husband and child.

Had she simply shut away the voice and abandoned the lamenting soldiers, she could have had that life, but felt that it was not a mistake to have walked her path due to those she had saved. She knew from the moment she chose to take to battle that she would have such an end, and she felt that she would never come to self-derision for her choices. Her past, impossible futures, and the cruel reality before her were meaningless before her prayers, offering herself that even if all other condemn her that she would not betray herself. Rather than continue to look back on her path or crave for another future, she only wished for a silent rest. Within the savagery, she only kept a single prayer within her heart to the very end, one unblemished by regret and filled with sincerity. As she said her final words, "...O Lord, I give myself to You...", her consciousnesses ended and she was released from her suffering. Although the girl's dream ended there, "the dream of La Pucelle was only just beginning."

Her death had caused Gilles de Rais to go insane, turn his back on God to practice black magic, and commit atrocities before he was captured and hanged to death.

Appearance[]

Ruler possesses the body of a French girl named Laeticia whose physical build, spiritual build, personality and Magical Energy were compatible to her. But her bust size alone is just slightly bigger than Jeanne d'Arc.[11] Her eyes were described as amethyst-colored eyes and they were completely pure. She didn’t have the precise and moulded beauty of a homunculus or the kind of cuteness that made one’s heart flutter just by being nearby like Astolfo. She possessed a wondrous beauty that scarcely felt real. In her battle mode, she can transform into her battle-dress with armour woven from Magical Energy to enclose her. Under her gauntlet, she has Command Spells engraved on her hand, whereas those special to command the Servants during the Great Holy Grail War are printed on her back with a similar shape drawn that of an angel. Although Gilles mistook King Arthur as Jeanne d'Arc, the main difference between her and King Arthur's appearance is sex appeal.[12]

In Fate/EXTELLA, she has the following costumes:

  • The Girl of Orléans (オルレアンの娘?) - Casual outfit.
  • Graveure Vacances (グラビア・ヴァカンス?) - Bikini costume.
  • April Magical (エイプリル・マジカル?) - The Kamikaze Magical Girl Jeanne costume.

In Fate/EXTELLA LINK, she has the following costumes:

  • Holy Maiden Armor (聖女の甲冑?)
  • Heavy Holy Maiden Armor (聖女の重甲冑?)
  • Cool & Sporty (クール&スポーツ, Kūru & Supotsu?) (DLC)
  • Black Elegance (ブラック・エレガンス, Burakku Eregansu?) (DLC)
  • Li'l Jeanne (ふにふにジャンヌ, Funi Funi Jannu?) (DLC)

In Fate/Grand Order, she has the following costumes:

  • Prove

Personality[]

Jeanne is described as a taciturn and cool girl when acting as a Servant, but her natural self is a plain and quiet sixteen-year-old girl. She puts order first, and will wield a sword for the sake of the rules, but fundamentally believes "all people and Heroic Spirits participating in the Holy Grail War are important".[2]

Jeanne and her host, Laeticia, do not share two personalities in one body, but rather their personalities are merged into one. Due to her faith, Laeticia accepts Ruler into her body completely. While Ruler remains the main dominant conscious, Laeticia's consciousness still lingers. In particular, Laeticia serves as the base for Ruler's knowledge that concerns matters outside of the Holy Grail War. She had never been able to read or write while alive, but she gains the ability to do so through Laeticia. Occasionally the possessed Laeticia would affect the possessor Ruler. For example, Laeticia is bad at handling men so her influence would affect Ruler. Ruler could not interact normally with Sieg when they stayed together in Serge's house unless she maintained a certain distance.

She has no wish for the Holy Grail but if there were to be one, it would only be that the Greater Grail War be conducted correctly. She doesn't mind if the person wishes a personal desire in front of the Holy Grail. As long as it doesn’t beckon the world’s destruction, she would properly respect the wish.

She doesn't have a single regret regarding her lifetime. She does not wish revenge or wish to be saved and it was enough for her to know the life that she lived alone. In Fate/Grand Order's "Little Santa Alter" event, Jeanne says that when she was young her greatest wish was to see the ocean.

She does not believe that God had forsaken her in her last moment but rather that the Lord has never forsaken a single person. There was just nothing he could have done. Praying, giving offerings, everything is an act not for oneself, but for the Lord. She believes prayer will heal the Lord's laments and sorrow. The moment her prayer began, she became separated from the world—removed from the past, the future, and reality itself. She was there not for any particular purpose, but simply to offer a prayer to God. By doing so, the course which she ought to take would come to be fixed. To her, every second of prayer is as important as every breath she takes; a day will not pass where she does not pray. She had a strange habit of comically poking Gilles in the eyes when ever he was least suspecting.

The "Servant Summer Festival" event in Fate/Grand Order reveals that Jeanne has a talent for drawing and feels great joy whenever she brings a story to life by drawing a manga. She even says that if she were just a normal person and not a Heroic Spirit, making manga is what she would want to do with her life. Jeanne also has a strong desire to be an older sister, referring to Ritsuka Fujimaru, Jeanne Alter, and Jeanne Alter Santa Lily as her younger siblings. In real life Jeanne d'Arc was the youngest of five siblings.

In the Orleans Singularity Jeanne tells Marie Antoinette that when she was a child she was considered one of the boys by the other kids,[13] and in Fate/Zero material Gilles is described as liking boyish girls.[14] In "My Room" in Fate/Grand Order Jeanne says that she can't resist lying down to sleep in a pile of hay. In "My Room" in Fate/EXTELLA LINK she says that sometimes she would lean against a tree and stare at the sky while her chores went undone.

Relationships[]

Gilles de Rais (Saber)
"Oh, Gilles! You are here as a general too? Let me know if you ever need your eyes poked out!" [15]
Jeanne’s former brethren. There is happiness and trustworthiness for Jeanne in being able to fight with Gilles together once more.[3]
Gilles de Rais (Caster)
"Yes, Gilles is now in that form... The past cannot be reversed, but I can still pray for the salvation of his soul." [15]
Jeanne’s former companion. Even though they are existences that now turn their backs towards each other… in that voice, Jeanne can discover traces of Gilles’ former self.[3]
Jeanne d'Arc Alter
The girl who muscled her way in from the reverse side of the coin. But, putting aside the time they had fought as enemies, she can't, of course, let the person know that once she turns into a Servant, she feels a little happy as if she had a brash little sister.[3]
"Alter! Alter! Honestly, as the older sister, I simply cannot abide her perverse ways! I know what this is called... It's "tsundere" right? What? That term is old-fashioned...? I-I thought it's the new trendy word!"[15]
Jeanne d'Arc Alter (Swimsuit)
“You’re making manga, right? Then I’ll make one too. Let’s do our best together! By the way, you need a German dictionary? Why? Also, where did you get those Japanese swords from?”[16]
Jeanne d'Arc Alter Santa Lily
"I see. You're a Santa, a Lily, an Alter, and another me. Th-that is rather complicated... But it's okay. Yes, everything will be all right!"[15]
Sieg
During Fate/Apocrypha, Jeanne develops romantic feelings for Sieg, though she refuses to acknowledge them because she has promised to love everyone equally. Jeanne does come round to accepting her feelings and in the Reverse Side of the World, Jeanne confesses her love to him.
"...I'm sorry, Master. who is that Servant? A homunculus, you say? I...must just be confused, then... Yes...that must be it..."[15]
Astolfo
"It's not that I have anything against him, but once we confront each other, I would naturally make a fist, you see! I wonder why!?"[3]
Jeanne finds Astolfo's carefree nature rather difficult to deal with. For the majority of the Great Holy Grail War, she mistakenly assumed he was female like her until she saw him naked. She embarrassingly admits to Sieg that she couldn't tell Astolfo's gender even when normally clothed. Her frustration at not knowing his gender is made worse when neither Jeanne or Sieg are able to read his gender in his status due to it being obscured. Astolfo attributes this to Casseur de Logistille interfering with their ability to read his stats as reading a Servant's stats is technically a spell.[17]
Astolfo (Saber)
"Hold it right there, Saber Astolfo. That outfit... It's definitely...something that I cannot let go and ignore... Just how off the rails can you get?"[15]
“A cute rabbit? WHY!?”[16]
Siegfried
"Is something the matter with Sieg? Is he in trouble again?"[15]
"Siegfried... Yes, I have some connections with the famous dragon slayer. Still, we've hardly ever met. What does that mean? Heh, we'll keep that a secret."[15]
Amakusa Shirou Tokisada
Jeanne and Shirou are both Catholics who were summoned as Rulers as part of the Great Holy Grail War. Jeanne is disgusted by Shirou's unorthodox methods in trying to obtain the Greater Grail, and insists that he is failing to live up to the title of "Heroic Spirit." She believes Shirou's wish for salvation for humanity is simply Shirou forcing his own selfish wishes on the people. Jeanne ends up sacrificing her life to weaken Shirou for Sieg to defeat.
"Amakusa Shirou Tokisada. The one aim to bring salvation of all. To be quite honest, you were an opponent I hope never to cross blades with again. I am glad we now fight together."[15]
There is a record where they once fought each other. But now, they are on a common front as comrades. The fact is that, even though they cannot get close to each other, they can advance alongside each other.[3]
Atalanta
Atalanta develops a grudge against Jeanne during the events of Fate/Apocrypha when the latter exorcises Jack the Ripper. "You imposter of a saint! I will never forgive you!" Upon her mortal wounds her final fight with Achilles, Atalanta tearfully admits that Ruler was the one right all along yet still could not let go of her views out of pride.
"Atalanta.. Yes.. We don't stand in opposition anymore. I am glad we can fight together."[15]
Karna
"A champion of the poor... We may not be of the same God, but he too is worthy of the title of Saint. If you allow me to say so, I think he should work on boosting his Master Luck... Indeed."[15]
William Shakespeare
"Shakespeare... If you use your Noble Phantasm on me again, will you at least come forward? I can't take much more of this!"[15]
Altera (Fate/EXTELLA)
Jeanne joins Altera's faction in Fate/EXTELLA in an attempt to understand and ultimately save Altera.
Marie Antoinette
"The queen? No, I haven't forgotten. Marie, you don't mind if I call you by your first name, yes? Hehehe."[15]
Jeanne and Marie befriended each other in the Orleans Singularity and occasionally appear together as friends in further events in Fate/Grand Order. They formed the St. Orleans doujin circle to make manga together, and Jeanne based one of her swimsuit ascensions off of Marie's own clothes.
When the two are present, the beach will already turn into a sea of gorgeous celebrities. Perhaps since the two also get along naturally well with each other, it is fundamentally common for them to act as a pair.[16]
Martha
"Oh! If it isn't Martha! I can't believe the one who pushed back Tarasque with prayers alone would be here!"[15]
Anne Bonny and Mary Read
"Teehee. Now I'm in the same circle as Miss Anne and Miss Mary. I have become a woman of the ocean! Hm? I should come and defeat Mister Blackbeard? Okay! I will accompagny you!"[15]
Robin Hood / Ibaraki-douji / Ushiwakamaru
"Everyone, thank you for putting up with her and her manga. I know things are difficult, but let's keep up the good work to complete her book!"[15]
Artoria Pendragon (Swimsuit) / ;Artoria Pendragon Alter / Artoria Pendragon
"You're in a swimsuit too... So you are truly the king of swimsuits!? Then, as I'm a Servant of the ocean, let the two of us become rivals!" [15]
Other Swimsuit Servants
“Gorgeousness is a nice thing, isn’t it?! I don’t know whether or not it’s fine for the likes of a plain person like me to join in with you all, but as a representative of the nameless flowers, I’ll do my best!”[16]
“… And to think of such things, even though they’re the most gorgeous. After all, a swimsuit is basically something for me to wear to participate and have fun with the others, so to wear a swimsuit just to dress myself up, that’s not something I would think about.”[16]

Role[]

Fate/Apocrypha[]

Joan of Arc (Fate Apocrypha)

Jeanne as Laeticia

Due to the irregularity of the Great Holy Grail War and the continued existence of the previous Ruler from the Third Holy Grail War, Shirou Kotomine, Ruler is summoned under strange conditions. Although she is to act as the impartial mediator between the two factions, she feels a foreboding in that there is someone unknown she must encounter, Shirou, that takes precedence over her role as mediator. Rather than being given a spiritual body, she instead possesses a human girl named Laeticia, a willing host, due to the previous Ruler still existing. Acting as Laeticia and using her natural ability as Ruler to have others believe her words, she tells her friends and the teachers of her school that she is going on a necessary journey. She ponders the strangeness of her summoning, her physical body, being summoned in France far away from the battlefield, and the overall strangeness of being the fifteenth Servant rather than the eighth. Deciding that it must be due to the unique war, she gathers the necessary supplies before departing for Trifas.[18]

Unable to travel in spiritual form, she must travel normally through public transit and airplane. Gathering her knowledge on the flight, she knows of the situation between the two factions, worried over how much damage fourteen Servants will cause. Unable to determine the exact reason for her summoning, she decides not to speculate until reaching the battlefield.[18]

After the Homunculus receives the heart of Saber of Black, Ruler offers to watch over the Homunculus herself. She intended to guide the Homunculus, who names himself "Sieg," into carving out a new life for himself. However, Ruler would later find Sieg participating in the war despite her insistence that he can live a normal life instead.

Ruler commands

Ruler using her Command Spells in the anime.

On her way to the location of the Red Faction, Ruler is the first outsider to see Assassin of Red's Hanging Gardens of Babylon. When a battle between the two Factions initiates, Ruler finds herself once again under attack by a few hostile Servants. She manages to defend herself from Berserker of Red's devastating blast. Ruler joins the Black Faction in infiltrating the Hanging Gardens to retrieve the stolen Greater Grail, and personally commands several Servants into attacking Darnic, who has merged himself with Lancer of Black.[19]

« In the name of Ruler—of Jeanne d’Arc. I order all Servants gathered here with my Command Spells! Defeat the vampire who was once Vlad III! »

(Ruler)

However, Darnic escapes being defeated when the Red Faction Servants suddenly collapse, leaving Ruler to pursue Darnic with the brief assistance of Archer of Black.

Ruler witnesses just in time the death of Darnic and Lancer of Black at the hands of Shirou. Ruler questions Shirou's motives and becomes disgusted by his selfish ambitions to force humanity to accept salvation they had never asked for. Although she still wants to question him further, Servants of the Red Faction show up and force her to retreat with Chiron.

Ruler teams up with the Black Faction since the situation of the Great Holy Grail War is no longer normal. Ruler also continues to act as Sieg's primary caretaker. When Assassin of Black is discovered slaughtering magi, Jeanne assists the Black Faction in defeating Assassin. Although Ruler is horrified to discover the true nature of Assassin, she still chooses to end Assassin's existence.

This earns Ruler the complete hatred of Archer of Red, who attempts to avenge the "poor children" by killing Ruler. Rider of Red steps in to take on Archer himself, allowing Ruler to continue her pursuit of Shirou.

Caster of Red intercepts Ruler and begins tormenting her psychologically, but it isn't until he shows her Sieg being burnt at the stake that Ruler nearly breaks under Caster's machinations. To add insult to the injury, Caster reveals the presence of Ruler's former companion, Gilles de Rais. Ruler initially believes Gilles to be another illusion, only Gilles to confirm that he is indeed real; in other words, a Servant.

Both Caster and Gilles torment Ruler over her romantic feelings for Sieg. She tries to deny any attraction to Sieg due to her vow of loving everyone equally.

Ruler eventually faces off against Shirou, with Sieg and a reformed Gilles by her side. Ruler decides to use her Noble Phantasm, La Pucelle, at the cost of her own life. Ruler fails to do much beyond cost Shirou an arm, and Ruler dies in Sieg's arms. She leaves behind the body of her vessel, Laeticia.

Sieg later transforms into the dragon Fafnir and transports the Holy Grail to the Reverse Side of the World so that Shirou's wish will not come true. An unspecified amount of time later, Jeanne manages to travel to the Reverse Side of the World from the Throne of Heroes. She reaches Sieg and reverts him to human form. They decide to travel together, and she finally confesses that she loves him.

Fate/Zero[]

Jeanne is referenced by Caster, whose identity is her former comrade Gilles de Rais, who, in his crazed mind, mistakes Saber for Jeanne. He witnesses the battle between Lancer and Saber through his magic crystal, and believing that his wish of bringing Jeanne back to life was granted by the Holy Grail, he succumbs to tears. He believes Saber's denial of Jeanne's identity is a curse laid upon her by God, that her heart has been sealed through her devotion. She who gave everything to God was not given salvation by Him, so he wishes to "free" her by proving that no such God exists.

Recalling his past while bathed in the annihilating light of Excalibur, Gilles remembers events before he began his forays into murder and the occult, back when he still served alongside Jeanne d'Arc.[10] She is shown standing at a church altar and turns back to Caster and reaches her hand out to him, making him realize the transgressions of his life before he is destroyed.

Einzbern Consultation Room[]

Caster has no regrets, but he does have a question that makes him linger before merging with the Greater Grail. In the Einzbern Consultation Room, Caster says he cannot help but think how Jeanne was not saved. He wonders if she is suffering eternal pain from burning in the inferno by those in power. He decides he cannot leave and is determined to return to the Holy Grail War to save her. Caster claims that his bulging eyes were caused by Jeanne when Irisviel von Einzbern unexpectedly pokes him in the eye to calm him down. Irisviel tells Caster that she was saved and was acknowledged as a Saint and became a famous idol in all media. Caster becomes the number one fan and the president of Jeanne's fan club group.

Fate/Grand Order[]

First Singularity: Orleans[]

Jeanne is summoned into the Singularity shortly after her death, but she's weakened and lacks the Skills attributed to the Ruler-class. Due to Jeanne Alter's actions, she is feared and distrusted by much of the French populace.[20]

Jeanne meets Ritsuka and Mash when she helps defend Vaucouleurs from wyverns.[21] Afterward, she tells the pair of her circumstances. She agrees to help restore the era and decides they need to gather intel on Orleans.[20]

The next day, the group travels to La Charite to gather information about Orleans, only to find the town already destroyed by monsters. After slaying the monsters there, the group is met by Jeanne Alter and her Servants. Jeanne asks her why she destroyed the town. Jeanne Alter answers it’s because she’s destroying France. She asks Jeanne why she wanted to save France and its people, despite knowing they’d ridicule and betray her. As Jeanne hesitates to answer, Jeanne Alter declares she will no longer be fooled or betrayed any longer. Unable to hear God's voice, she believes France is no longer blessed by Him. So, in accordance with His grief, Jeanne Alter will destroy France to save it. She tells Jeanne that she couldn’t understand, accusing her of pretending not to see hatred and joy and incapable of human growth. Jeanne asks her if she is truly her, to which Jeanne Alter mockingly calls Jeanne the leftover residue she threw away. Jeanne Alter then orders Carmilla and Vlad III to kill Jeanne. Marie Antoinette soon intervenes and helps the group escape by having Amadeus Mozart repel the vampires with Requiem for Death.[22]

After escaping, the group discusses how all of Jeanne Alter’s Servants have Mad Enhancement regardless of their background. Romani Archaman attributes this to the Holy Grail. Jeanne theorizes Marie and Mozart’s summoning is the result of the Grail resisting the reversed causality of it having a holder before the Grail War even began.[13]

Later that night, the group defeat Martha, who tested their skills rather than merely observe like Jeanne Alter ordered. Before she disappears, Martha tells them to go to Lyon. There they’ll find a dragon slayer who can slay Jeanne Alter’s personal dragon.[13]

The next day, Marie gathers intel about Lyon from a nearby town while the others wait outside since Jeanne’s presence will terrify the citizens. Marie reports Lyon was destroyed a while ago, yet despite that, the group decides to search the town.[23]

While searching Lyon, the group encounters and kills Phantom of the Opera. Romani then warns them a dragon and three Servants are approaching. The group decides to continue their search, so Romani points them to the town castle that he got a Servant reading from. Ritsuka, Mash, and Jeanne head there while Marie and Mozart stay behind to fight. The three find the dragon slayer, Siegfried, and free him.[23]

Exiting the castle, they’re confronted by Jeanne and her dragon, Fafnir. Jeanne Alter commands Fafnir to incinerate them, but Jeanne And Mash protect everyone from the dragon’s flames with their Noble Phantasms. The group then escapes after Siegfried uses Balmung to drive Fafnir away.[24]

While escaping, they encounter soldiers being attacked by wyverns. Jeanne defends the soldiers from the wyverns while the others fight Charles-Henri Sanson and Lancelot. While fighting the wyverns, Jeanne is insulted by Carmilla for being feared now as the Dragon Witch, but she doesn’t falter. Eventually, Marshal Gilles arrives and attacks the wyverns with his artillery, giving Jeanne the chance to attack Carmilla. As Carmilla retreats with Sanson, Lancelot attacks Jeanne, having mistaken her for King Arthur. The group defeats him, and Jeanne apologizes to him for not being his king. After Lancelot disappears, Gilles stops Jeanne and asks if it’s truly her. Jeanne refuses to answer him to not endanger his position and leaves with the others.[24]

Arriving at an abandoned fort, the group learns from Siegfried that he’s been cursed. The curses’ multiplicity prevents Jeanne from removing them herself, so she and the others split up to search for a saint to help.[25]

Traveling with Marie, Jeanne is told by her to reject all of Jeanne Alter’s scornful words. This helps to dispel some of Jeanne’s self-doubt.[25] The two eventually come to a town protected by Georgios. They try to recruit him, but he refuses to leave until the town is evacuated. However, just as the town is nearly evacuated, Jeanne Alter arrives to attack the town. Marie stays behind to protect the town while Jeanne and Georgios escape.[26]

Rendezvousing with the others at Thiers, Jeanne tells everyone about Marie’s sacrifice. She and Georgios then lift the curses from Siegfried. Later that night, she has a conversation with Mozart about Marie. Mozart tells her that Marie’s wish for a friend was fulfilled thanks to her. Jeanne affirms to him she will save France in honor of Marie.[27]

The next day, the group agrees with a frontal assault on Orleans. On the way to Orleans, they kill Atalanta.[28] Afterward, Jeanne confronts Jeanne Alter while the others deal with Fafnir and Jeanne Alter’s Servants. Jeanne Alter retreats after her Servants and Fafnir are slain.[29] Ritsuka's party gives chase and eventually reaches Orleans Castle. Siegfried, Mozart, and Georgios stay behind while the others head-on in.[30]

Inside the caste, Ritsuka's party is confronted by Gilles de Rais. Jeanne asks him if Jeanne Alter is the real her, to which Gilles answers Jeanne Alter is the real Jeanne. This helps Jeanne affirm to herself that she will defeat her dark self, prompting a fight with Gilles. The group struggles against him at first because of his sea demons until they gain the upper hand, yet they’re still unable to defeat him. Kiyohime and Elizabeth Báthory decide to hold him off while the others head for the throne room to confront Jeanne Alter.[30]

In the throne room, Jeanne asks Jeanne Alter if she remembers her family. Jeanne Alter answers she doesn’t, which makes Jeanne realize the former isn’t her. She and the others then defeat Jeanne Alter’s Shadow Servants followed by the Dragon Witch herself. Gilles arrives in time to witness Jeanne Alter’s last moments, retrieving the Grail from her after she disappears. He reveals he created her with the Grail to create a Jeanne that sought vengeance on France. However, Jeanne affirms to him she could never be the “Dragon Witch“, as even with her tragic end she could never hate her homeland. Despite knowing Jeanne’s true feelings, Gilles reaffirms his desire to destroy France in revenge for killing her. Refusing to let even Jeanne stand in his way, Gilles absorbs the Grail and fights the group. To his shock, he is defeated despite having the Grail’s power. He refuses to give up though until Jeanne tells him to stop and thanks him for believing her in life. He disappears and Mash retrieves the Grail.[31]

As the Singularity collapses, Marshal Gilles confronts Jeanne, overjoyed to see her alive. But Jeanne corrects him that her execution and him despairing over her death will remain unchanged. She tells him she senses they fight together again in some form, calling their situation a temporary goodbye. Gilles realizes she still cares for France, even in death, and asks her forgiveness for France betraying her. Jeanne then says goodbye to Ritsuka and Mash, feeling they’ll meet again.[31]

Vengeful Demon's Wail at the Prison Tower[]

Jeanne tells Ritsuka the story of Edmond Dantès while their soul is still trapped in Château d’If. Acting as the avatar of wrath, she willingly enters the prison tower to stop Edmond. She rejects his belief that she should be vengeful towards her betrayal and execution. She also refuses to judge Ritsuka, saying she lacks the will and right. Instead, she has come to save Edmond’s soul, but Gilles says his soul too filled with hatred to find salvation. Realizing words cannot reach him, she fights Edmond with Gilles. The pair are defeated; Jeanne retreats, refusing to give up on Edmond.[32]

She soon returns, having resolved herself to stop Edmond. She tells him that even with his uncontrollable rage, he can still ask for forgiveness and salvation because she knows he experienced it before. Edmond prepares to kill her when Amakusa Shirou tells her words cannot reach him. Despite knowing this, Jeanne refuses to give up. She accepts Amakusa Shriou’s aid against Edmond, ignoring their conflicted past, knowing they both wish to save Edmond. After being defeated, Jeanne tells Edmond that nothing is eternal, particularly evil. She and Amakusa Shirou then disappear, praying that Edmond’s soul finds rest.[33]

Christmas Event: The Second Generation is Alter-chan[]

Hearing a commotion in the hallway, Jeanne demands Gilles to explain why he's making so much when everyone is trying to sleep. However, upon seeing Jeanne Alter Lily, she demands an explanation for her instead under the threat of poking his eyes out. After getting an explanation, she takes Alter Lily to Ritsuka. There she reiterates what happened to Ritsuka and Mash. Santa Alter then enters and demands to speak with Jeanne and Ritsuka alone upon seeing Alter Lily. She reveals Alter Lily will disappear in her current state. To maintain her body as a Servant, she needed to become something. However, Alter Lily wanted to become Santa, even though children shouldn’t. Thus, Ritsuka devises a plan that will help Alter Lily realize her desire under the guise of making her Santa. After returning from their discussion, Santa Alter decides to give her sack to Alter Lily if she proves her worth as Santa in the combat simulator.

Jeanne appears at the end as Alter Lily watches the sea with Nursery Rhyme and Jack the Ripper. She confesses wanting to see the sea was her wish as a child before she departed at age seventeen. She then explains the true purpose of Alter Lily’s journey to Mash. Agreeing with Amakusa Shirou’s previous statement about the ideal Santa needing to be impartial in delivering presents, Jeanne says It’s impossible for children because they should be receiving presents. It’s different if they give a present to someone specific since it’s out of their own desire, not out of impartiality like an ideal Santa. Jeanne hoped Alter Lily’s journey would teach her that children desire presents more than anyone, and for her to harbor a desire. Unfortunately, Alter Lily proved more stubborn than previously thought, so Jeanne, Santa Alter, and Ritsuka placed Servants at certain locations. Jeanne explains the other purpose was for Alter Lily to see the sea with her dear friends. As long as she has that memory, she will continue to exist as a Servant. Jeanne then thanks Amakusa Shirou for his help, even dismissing his ulterior motive of wanting more Jeanne Alters to annoy her. She feels as if she gained a little sister. She, Santa Alter, and Amakusa Shirou then tell Mash that it wasn’t them who conceived the plan. After Ritsuka is revealed to be the mastermind, Jeanne praises their ability to improvise, and for placing Servants at the appropriate places. However, no one told Mash about the plan since she cannot lie. EMIYA tells Ritsuka to apologize to Mash; Jeanne, Santa Alter, and Amakusa Shirou all agree that EMIYA is experienced in apologizing to girls. Jeanne thanks Leonidas and Hassan of the Cursed Arm for their help. She apologizes to Asterios for getting him involved, but he doesn't mind since Alter Lily’s wish was granted. Alter Lily then comes to talk with Ritsuka, so everyone except Ritsuka hides.

Final Singularity: Solomon[]

Jeanne thwarts Flauros from killing Ritsuka. Her arrival heralds the autonomous summoning of many Heroic Spirits to the Time Temple through their connection with Ritsuka. She rallies the Servants to clear a path to the Throne and they begin to defend Chaldea and engage the Demon Gods, killing the Pillars as endlessly as they can regenerate.[34] She is amongst the Orleans Singularity Servants to assist Chaldea against the Demon Gods administrating the Melting Furnace.[35] After Goetia is defeated, Jeanne thanks the disappearing Servants for holding the Demon Gods back so Ritsuka and Mash could reach the throne. She agrees with Gilgamesh that they can only their lend strength to humanity before he disappears. She then disappears congratulating Ritsuka for gathering so many Heroic Spirits.[36]

Summer Event: Servant★Fes[]

Jeanne and Marie are members of the doujin club, St. Orleans, known for their cute art and intense stories. They have already proven themselves popular at Servant Fes, selling more copies of their doujin more than any other group the previous year.

Jeanne encounters Ritsuka’s party when they come to the beach to gather reference material for their doujin. She mistakenly believes Ushiwakmaru and Medb are having a friendly brawl and joins in, forcing Ritsuka and Robin Hood to break it up. Afterwards, she leaves to meet Marie for their lunch date. The next day when the convention center is opened, she and Marie sell their doujins.

On the second day of the time loop, Jeanne encounters the group, wanting to hang out with Jeanne Alter. She is surprised Jeanne Alter knows she’s drawing a doujin, but she’s more pleased the former is drawing doujin as a constructive attempt to surpass her. After being embarrassed about everyone knowing about her competitive streak, she takes everyone to breakfast.

At breakfast, she tells the group about the other doujin groups. The first is Grown-Up Fairy Tales run by William Shakespeare and Hans Christian Andersen. Second is Tentacle Iron Bar founded by Katsushika Hokusai. Jeanne bets Hokusai could release the winning entry, though her work is so good that it doesn't trend with the general public. There is a rumor however that she’s missing. The third club is The One Thousand and One Night Offerings Collective run by Scheherazade and Nitocris. The last club is Princess Princess run by Osakabehime and Kiyohime. Jeanne expects the group will encounter all of them eventually if they explore Luluhawa. Refusing to let the Foreigner who appeared last night to wreak havoc, she vows to defeat her. She then tells the group that she plans to draw a dolphin love story. She also looks forward to reading Jeanne Alter’s own work.

Later, at the convention center, she greets Jeanne Alter, though the latter assumes she came to mock their group’s poor sales numbers. She then confesses to Jeanne Alter’s shock that her dolphin love story didn’t sell the most. Nonetheless, she looks forward to the next Servant Fes.

The next night, she encounters Ritsuka and Jeanne Alter as they’re walking along the beach. She explains how after taking a photo with Anastasia Romanova that she made a dolphin into her familiar to save its life. After killing the coconuts crabs that appeared, she tells Jeanne Alter she has the dolphin reference material she needs thanks to her familiar, Reece. Her story this year is about summer, the sea, and dolphins, and she is going to ensure it turns out wonderfully.why she came.

A few days later, Jeanne comes to the group’s hotel room to see how their drafts are coming along. With Reece’s help, she wakes Jeanne Alter up and explains why she came. At breakfast the next morning, she asks Jeanne Alter how their manga is doing, but the latter refuses to say anything. She is surprised that Jeanne Alter knows about her dolphin love story, and that it’s 80% finished. She asks Jeanne Alter about their progress, to which the latter says it’s halfway done. Jeanne Alter then asks Jeanne why she started drawing manga. Jeanne confesses Marie asked her to make manga with her while thinking about what she would do if she was neither a Heroic Spirit or a Servant. She felt fulfilled from creating stories, as they weren’t a major part of her life. She then asks Jeanne Alter why she’s drawing manga. Jeanne Alter answers it is to surpass Jeanne’s story about a princess and a monster. Jeanne doesn’t remember drawing such a story however, so Jeanne Alter tells her about it. Even after being told about it, she still doesn’t remember it. Jeanne Alter tries to show it to her, but it’s seemed to disappear. Jeanne Alter asks where BB is, to which Jeanne reveals BB is running Servant Fes this year. However, she felt BB was fundamentally different from everyone else when Ritsuka asks if she noticed anything unusual about her. She recalls Edmond Dantès asking her the same thing, saying he hangs out at the beach at night. She then swims with Ritsuka and Jeanne Alter.

At night, following another loop, Jeanne examines Jeanne Alter’s art in her room. She praises her for making vast improvements in her drawing in just five days. She agrees with Osakabehime that artists spend their entire lives trying to improve their skills. Like the previous loop, Jeanne cannot remember drawing a story about a princess and a monster that inspired Jeanne Alter to draw. She feels she couldn’t draw such a story before Marie, an actual princess.

A couple of nights following another loop, Jeanne has Ritsuka join her in a nighttime swim. Comments on how Ritsuka always have their hands full every summer, she tells them to enjoy Luluhawa for the moment. She asks them to think of her as a big sister now, instead of their Servant. Thus when they return to restoring humanity, Ritsuka can count on her like a big sister. Jeanne even boasts they’ll see her as the best big sister after seeing the practice she put in with Jeanne Alter and Alter Lily. As a first step she has Ritsuka hold her hand when she realizes Jeanne Alter and Alter Lily should join them. The two Alters join later, but they’re confused by Jeanne’s insistence that Ritsuka is the newest member of their “family”. When they fail to see it the same way, Jeanne uses force to make them see it. After successfully coercing the Alters, she and Ritsuka return to their room. She then has them fall asleep in her lap after they took a bath.

Later at dawn, she tells Jeanne Alter everybody wishes for something, but only a select few can succeed at doing. Imagination may be limitless, but the act of creation is not. It is the same for her, believing no creator is truly satisfied by their work.

The next day, she meets Ritsuka and Jeanne Alter after they leave the hotel. She asks how their final draft doing, admitting hers is done. Seeing Jeanne Alter upset about Hokusai and Osakbehime also being done, Jeanne quietly asks what her problem is. Ritsuka answers it’s related to their slow progress on their manga. Jeanne Alter admits she came outside looking for a fight to relieve stress after Jeanne asks. Jeanne helps her do so, having Hokusai and Osakabehime join as well.

Later that evening, Jeanne, Hokusai and Osakbehime enter the group’s room to help Jeanne Alter after Ritsuka asked. Jeanne is fine if Jeanne Alter’s book wins, as she sees Servant Fes as a type of conversation. While sales are important, she wants to see another book in the mix. She and Jeanne Alter soon argue about the princess’ love resurrecting the monster in the story, with Jeanne believing it should be more encompassing. However, she withdraws her objection after Jeanne Alter says the princess’ love is more possessive. Unfortunately, Hokusai later accidentally deletes the data on their tablets. Everyone then crunches to get it done by early morning. Jeanne, Osakabehime, and Hokusai collapse from exhaustion.

Capsule Servant[]

In both Rin and Shirou route, Jeanne traveled from France and is using her Heroic Spirit vacation time to come to Fuyuki City on holiday which she received for completing her work as Ruler. She proclaims herself as France's biggest celebrity and worries about reports of her reappearance in headline newspapers. She becomes determined to hide her identity on vacation. She encounters either Rin and Shirou, she calls Rin a modern saint and Shirou a young soldier. Both who she believed to be affected by her holy aura that they couldn’t contain themselves and rushed to serve under the Lord's banner. She boasted about how famous she is and how she has been easily discovered. Shirou mistakes her to be King Arthur which Jeanne curses England. She tries to explain the difference between her and King Arthur bust size. She blames on XavierWP for her reputation to be not known in the East. Rin recognizes Jeanne, though she mistakenly quoted NapoleonWP in front of her. She gets angry when both Shirou and Rin know more about Napoleon than her, she further explains that mixing her up with Napoleon is on a whole other level than mixing her up with King Arthur. Jeanne tries to impress Shirou with her flag Noble Phantasm but Shirou explains that a sword that shoots beams is easier to understand. She cries saying she plans to never come back to Japan. Jeanne gives a copy of Fate/Apocrypha to Rin. Rin enjoys the book but she enjoys the parts with Astolfo more, to which Jeanne curses Astolfo.[37]

After the battle, the ending skips to a 7 years later narration where both Shirou and Rin summon their Servants in Fate/stay night. In both Rin's and Shirou's ending, they both summoned Ruler and she wants to participate in the Holy Grail war and to increase her popularity. In Shirou's ending, she is tired of the Saber clones trend such as Sakura Saber and Red Saber which left both Shirou and Lancer shouting to her to wait. In Rin's ending, she plans to establish a new law that all pink haired girls and people who look like girls will have their hair cut off immediately.[37]

Fate/EXTELLA[]

Jeanne is a playable character in Extella, serving in Altera's party alongside Gilgamesh and Iskandar. Jeanne is a "Top Servant" summoned by the Moon Cell to defend it from the Umbral Star and is sent to destroy Altera following her defeat of Iskander. After she and the interloping Gilgamesh are defeated by Altera she swears loyalty to her in an attempt to understand and ultimately save her.

Flame Poem[]

Jeanne leads Altera's forces against Nero Claudius in Mare Origo, but she's eventually defeated by Nero. Later, she helps defend Mare Carcer against Nero's force, but she's again defeated.

Orchid Words[]

Jeanne helps Gilgamesh in defending Mare Origo against Tamamo's force, but she's defeated by Tamamo.

Dawn[]

Jeanne invades Mare Carcer to defeat Altera on Moon Cell's orders. Altera offers to let her join her, but Jeanne rejects her. She then fights Altera, using her powers as Ruler to seal Altera away forever. However, Gilgamesh suddenly appears, and interrupts their battle with Gate of Bablyon. Jeanne shocked he came to the Zero Dark without being summoned, finding it impossible even for a Top Servant. She is shocked further when Altera deduces Gilgamesh's identity. After Gilgamesh decides to join Altera, Jeanne asks why he would help Velber. He leaves her to contemplate whether to follow her duty to Moon Cell, or her own passions. Jeanne later joins Altera, and helps fight against Tamamo-no-Mae's forces in Mare Origo.

A few days later, Jeanne, joined by Iskandar, help Altera conquer Mare Aurum. After the battle, Altera realizes Nero launched an attack on Mare Carcer while she distracted by Gawain, and summons Iskandar and Jeanne back. She orders them to destroy every enemy program in the Zero Dark while she attacks Nero's main forces in Mare Carcer.

Golden Poem[]

Jeanne and Gilgamesh help Iskandar fight against Nero's forces in Mare Origo, but they're both defeated. Later, as Gilgamesh watches Nero and Iskandar fight, she ask him if she truly means to kill Hakuno along with Nero if the battle fails to amuse him. She then asks him why he joined Altera, as he wasn't summoned by Moon Cell, so she cannot perceive a reason for him to intervene with Velber. Gilgamesh thinks she's joking, but she insists she isn't. He then explains how he came from the Far Side after sensing an awakening in the Zero Dark to intervene in the battle against Sefar. Sensing the battle against Sefar will come to an end, he wonders what will come afterwards, as neither he nor Jeanne can perceive it. The next day, Jeanne and Gilgamesh help defend Mare Carcer, but they're defeated again.

Fate/EXTELLA LINK[]

Before the start of the story, Jeanne was ordered by the Moon Cell to eliminate Karl der Große as a threat. However, he overpowered and assimilated her, turning her into blue particles, so he can use her Spirit Core as a Top Servant to the second furnace of his Spirit Core Replication System. Thus, With Gilgamesh powering the first furnace, he is able to produce more stable Facsimile Servants. Jeanne and Gilgamesh were also capture as the two of three Spirit Cores of a Top Servant to power Carolus Patricius Dimitte.

Second Route[]

Jeanne is restored to her original state by Tamamo's Eightfold Blessing of Amaterasu. She is pleased to see everyone again, but she turns hostile towards Charlemagne upon sensing his Spirit Core is the same as Karl's. She calms down though after Hakuno asks her to stop, and she sees none of the Servants are Oraclized. Asked by Charlemagne what happened to her, she reveals she fought Karl, but his power reduced her to the blue particles. Afterwards, he used her as the core of the Spirit Core Replication Factory. Though Nero believes Karl will be unable assimilate nor produce Fax. Servants without Jeanne, Charlemagne and Jeanne sense Karl still has power. Jeanne recalls he already the blue particles around him when she was assimilated. She believes losing her significantly weakened the New Holy Empire. She thus agrees with Tamamo's assessment that they wouldn't be try so hard to capture Artoria Pendragon otherwise. She then joins the group.

She joins Hakuno, Nero, Tamamo, and Charlemagne they go confront Karl in the Great Cathedral of Carolus Patricius. They find it dense with blue particles, but Jeanne uses Luminosité Eternelle to temporarily stop the Oraclization. Karl reminds her that her power cannot stop him. She understands she can't do alone, but this time she has comrades on her side, who all agree it's thanks to Hakuno. Karl activates Carolus Patricius Dimitte, and sends his troop against the group. The group quickly defeat Karl's soldiers before they can assimilated. In response, Karl activates Carolus Patricius Auctoritas to forcibly assimilate the group along with the rest of SE.RA.PH. After a grueling battle, the group destroy the mechanized armor, taking Karl with it. After he disappears, the group escape before Carolus Patricius collapses.

Everyone returns to Mare Aurum, and hold a celebration party. Jeanne understands from Charlemagne that Astolfo is the same whether in life or as a Heroic Spirit. She considers Charlemagne's knights not to be very knightly after learning from Astolfo that most knights were light-hearted and took part in the latter's games. She sees Archbishop Turpin was a magnificent man, but understands he was too noble to stop Astolfo from crossdressing. She also believes his faith allowed him to defeat a thousand enemies even after being impaled by four spears, and getting his skull cracked to Charlemagne and Astolfo's amazement. She then asks Nameless for seconds.

Final Route[]

Jeanne is oraclized, and joins Gilles in defending Carolus Patricus from Hakuno's faction. Charlemagne thanks her saving France, but he demands she move so they can stop Karl. Jeanne merely replies resistance is futile, saying to accept God's love. She then orders the cannons to be prepared. Once they're prepared she orders them to be fired at Hakuno's position. After Altera and Arjuna destroy the cannons, and her troops are routed, Jeanne joins the battle herself. Jeanne is eventually defeated, though Gilles refuses to accept they both lost. She tells him to accept it, feeling God's will is with the group. She then asks Hakuno and Charlemagne to save Karl's soul if they were truly chosen by God before disappearing.

Other appearances[]

In the Kara no Kyoukai novel, Mikiya Kokutou mentions her when he was discussing with Touko Aozaki about heroes who utilized the power of the Counter Force, saying that Jeanne's story reminds her of the Counter Force.[9]

Ruler was mentioned in the conversation between Orlando Reeve and Francesca in Fate/strange Fake. Orlando says that the grail system would oppose them in due time but Francesca corrects him, saying that it would be too late for Ruler to interfere when the false grail becomes the real version. Francesca has an obsession with Ruler, she shows some sadistic urges by claiming she is looking forward to burn and make her suffer.[38]

In Type-Moon's April Fools' Day 2013, she appears in Back Alley Satsuki. Jeanne d'Arc is a gold heroine of dog to protect the eleventh temple and she is known as Kamikaze Magical Girl Jeanne (神風魔法少女ジャンヌ, Kamikaze Mahō Shōjo Jan'nu?). Her zodiac sign is The Dog.

Abilities[]

As the world’s most famous female saint, Jeanne d'Arc left her village at the age of seventeen, and two years later indelibly carved her name into history when she was burned at the stake. She is the saint who saved France by accomplishing a miraculous military offensive, only to meet a tragic end shortly thereafter.[4] As a Heroic Spirit, she has qualifications to be summoned in the Ruler and Saber Class.[2] Under the Ruler class, she is a special Heroic Spirit summoned by the Holy Grail itself to act as the administrator of the Holy Grail War. Any Servants participating the Holy Grail War can learn identity and information, however information on the Ruler is strictly confidential, there are many mysteries in its presence. In the Great Holy Grail War, several of her abilities as aren’t functioning correctly due to the existence of the previous Ruler.

Ruler sensing Assassin of Black

Ruler sensing Assassin of Black before she attacks her.

She has a unique ability that allows her to scan around her position from a wide range within 10 kilometers radius. The scan allows her to search for servants' positions which can even overcome Assassin's Presence Concealment ability. One of the many privileges afforded to the manager of the War is the function of locating Servants. As she dips her right hand into the holy water and casts it into the air the water gives a dim glow and then begins to smoothly draw a three-dimensional map. Ruler’s perception ability exceeded that of the Spirit Board (霊器盤, Reikiban?). When Siegfried committed suicide, she could affirm that Siegfried had not completely disconnected with this world. It was unclear where exactly he was, but—in any case, he should still be alive. When Sieg used his Dead Count Shapeshifter, she can sense Siegfried from a dying state to be alive and active.

Combat[]

Although she never fought the English during her life and only serving as a flagbearer, she is still able to fight many servants during the Great Holy Grail War. She fought both Karna and Atalanta for long periods of time while the latter was using Agrius Metamorphosis, which gives her abilities equivalent of that of a Berserker that has A-rank Mad Enhancement, although Achilles had to step in to save her.

She can even dodge Atalanta's arrows, and react fast enough to stab her flag on her. And even put down Jack as she was about to attack her in the back. During the conflict against Karl der Große, she was powerful enough to resist his powers protecting both Hakuno Kishinami, Charlemagne, Nero Claudius and Tamamo-no-Mae from its effects.

Skills[]

Class Skills[]

Jeanne blocking Semiramis' strike

Jeanne resisting and blocking Semiramis' attack.

  • Magic Resistance (EX Rank): In addition to the Magic Resistance of the Saber Class, she demonstrates a high anti-magic from her unwavering piety. However, since it is just averting (evading) the Magecraft, only Jeanne will be saved against a wide-range magic attack. It cannot cope with the sacraments of the Church.[1][2] At this rank, Jeanne can't be wounded even by magecraft from the Age of Gods. However, this resistance only turns spells away from her. In other words, it doesn't negate them. Semiramis's lightning spell attack was suppressed, not a single spot, but an entire area had been diverted away without injuring her. The strike, which should have had a will of its own, had lost its malice. Instead, the lightning attacked the surrounding area.
True Name Discernment

Jeanne's True Name Discernment identifying Shakespeare.

  • True Name Discernment (B Rank): When summoned as a Ruler, status information such as the true identity, Skill and Parameters is automatically revealed when she directly encounters a Servant. However Servants with hiding capacity depend on her luck level to bypass this.[1]

  • God's Resolution (A Rank): As a privilege of the Ruler Class, Jeanne d'Arc has two Command Spells that can be used for each Servant participating in the Holy Grail War. However, she cannot re-purpose other Command Spells that had been previously used.[1] When the nameless vampire previously known as Vlad III and Darnic Prestone Yggdmillennia abandoned his existence as a Servant, this skill was no longer able to restrain him. As such, Ruler deemed him the greatest threat that could destroy the Holy Grail War and she used her privilege to force a truce with the black and red faction Servants to eradicate the vampire.

Personal Skills[]

  • Revelation (A Rank): A Skill equivalent to "Instinct". Instinct is a sixth sense regarding battles, but "Revelation" accommodates all matters related to the achievement of a goal (for instance, choosing the most suitable path while traveling). Because there is no basis (so she thinks), it cannot be explained well to others.[1][2]
  • Charisma (C Rank): The natural talent to command an army. Jeanne's figure participating in the assaults hoisting a flag raised the morale of the soldiers to the limit and united the troops. Thanks to her charisma, it is possible to make others believe in the contents of the "revelations" without basis.[1][2] She can make others believe her words due to her status as Ruler, differing from suggestion magecraft in that she only has to forcefully assert her point to regular humans for them to acquiesce. She persuaded her teachers and friends that she must go on a journey and made them understand that it was absolutely necessary.
  • Saint (B Rank): Indicates being acknowledged as a saint. When summoned as a Servant, the ability of saint is selected one among "raising the effectiveness of sacraments", "automatic HP recovery", "1 Rank-Up to Charisma" and "production of a holy shroud" is possible.[1][2]

Noble Phantasms[]

By brandishing her holy flag, Jeanne can activate her Luminosité Eternelle Noble Phantasm, by converting her EX rank Magic Resistance skill into an equally powerful defense that blocks all physical attacks. It is the crystallization of the legend of Jeanne d’Arc waving her flag on the battlefield and fighting to the very end with hardly any wounds. However, each time she uses it, she accumulates damages, so naturally, she can’t withstand an Anti-Fortress Noble Phantasm multiple times in a row. Incidentally, Jeanne uses this flag mostly to attack in battle.[39]

Jeanne also has access to La Pucelle, a conceptual crystallization weapon interpreted as her burning at the stake in an attack-like fashion.[1][2] It is a variant of Reality Marble that crystallizes the mental landscape of the user into a sword in the form of flames.[1][2][4] After the battle in which this Noble Phantasm was manifested, Jeanne will be extinguished.[1][2] In exchange for her life, she gains access to pure destructive power that cannot be calculated, which allows her to annihilate anything in existence. However, these flames only destroy that which she considers a dangerous threat that must be destroyed. In other words, this Noble Phantasm cannot be used against simply a strong enemy or out of emotions like hate.[40]

Summoning[]

Ruler is possessing a human body, an unprecedented summoning with a very weak link to the current world, so she has a number of irregularities that do not plague regular Servants. She has the physical abilities of a Servant, but since she is linked to a physical human body through the realm of the unconscious, she has to carry on her life as a normal human. She cannot turn into spiritual form, and she must deal with the body's needs of hunger and sleep. Ruler kept a backup of Laeticia's body. When she achieved her objective or if she was killed midway through the war, at that instant, Laeticia's body would return to its original form as recorded in the backup and, depending on the situation, would be forcefully transported somewhere safe. With that process, no matter how many wounds this body received, it would immediately regenerate.

Forms and Alternate Versions[]

Swimsuit[]

Jeanne in her swimsuit becomes an Archer-class Servant and she replaces her banner with a hoop and commands a dolphin named Reece like a familiar. Although she believes herself as being no different, she has become more carefree thanks to the summer weather.

She formed the Circle St. Orleans together with Marie Antoinette. While the concerned duo believes they are writing romantic comedies, their stories are considered overly sweet and absured.

Abilities[]

When Jeanne's Saint Graph achieves final ascension, her role changes from "a big sister of the dolphins on the beach" to "a saint who strides into the everlasting summer". At this stage, the hoop has become a halo, turning her into an All-You-Can-Do High-Powered Shooting Saint.

Jeanne commands a dolphin named Reece like a familiar, who she met in a cheesy girl-meets-dolphin senario. Reece always stays close to Jeanne and can walk on land and fly through the air. He often tries to give advice, though his input is considered unwanted.

Class Skills[]
  • Magic Resistance (B Rank): Nullifies magecraft spells that were invoked with a chant of three verses or below. It is difficult to damage Jeanne who has this rank of Magical Resistance with magecraft, even if she was targeted by Great Magecrafts, Ritual Spells and the like.[16]
  • Independent Action (Celeb) (EX Rank): One can act even with the absence of their Master. Dolphins also come to play with Jeanne. For some reason, her magical energy continues to be supplied as long as she is near the sea.[16]
Personal Skills[]
  • Endless Enjoy Summer! (A Rank): EES for short. The spirit where one should enjoy the endless summer with all their energy.[16]
  • Holy Maiden of the Waterside (Dolphin) (A+ Rank): By getting into the Archer-class, it appears that dolphins become emotionally attached to Jeanne for some reason. The dolphins bear their fangs against those who are hostile to Jeanne, as though they are about to come and swoop down on them just to cut up and pull apart their flesh.[16]
  • Servant Cheer! (B Rank): Even if she is not in the Ruler-class, Jeanne's cheerful mentality did not change at all. This cheerful energy could give other people the wrong idea when she sugges they do their best together, even if she believes she is encourging them.[16]
Noble Phantasm[]

Jeanne d'Arc's Noble Phantasm is Des Océans d'Allégresse. With this Noble Phantasm, she can summon phantasmal beast related to the ocean, including dolphins and a whale named Scrooge.[41]

Development[]

She was first referenced in TYPE-MOON's earlier piece Kara no Kyoukai novel.[9]

Creation and Conception[]

Ruler was created by Kinoko Nasu and designed by Takashi Takeuchi for the original canceled Fate/Apocrypha online game project.[2] She would have been the main aspect of the repeating war, where she would act as a counterforce who wishes to safeguard the framework of the Holy Grail War. Summoned as a Ruler class, this aspect allows her to retain the memories of each repeating "game" unlike other Servants. Though other Servants would only focus on protecting their respective Masters, she would only want to protect the Holy Grail War. While the overall story would change depending upon the Servants' relationship with the Masters, the story would conclude with her activating her ultimate Noble Phantasm that she had been stubbornly withholding, thus creating a world with a complete story despite its nature as an online game.[42] While the design for Jeanne was not made during the production of the Fate/Zero novels, the design was completed around the time of the anime adaptation, so it was included in Caster's flashback in Fate/Zero.

Jeanne d'Arc was illustrated by Takashi Takeuchi in Fate/Grand Order. Her scenario writer are Kinoko Nasu and Yuuichirou Higashide in Fate/Grand Order.

Comment from Illustrator[]

"Swimsuit Jeanne… she was a character I was a little worried about in regard to her methods of attack. In the beginning, when she was called an Archer, I even thought about a gigantic water gun for her, but in the end, I cannot grow accustomed to a Saint with firearms. At the end of ups and downs, it became “I have no choice now but to put a dolphin here”, which led to her becoming the current Dolphin Saint. For her swimsuit in her First Stage, I designed its appearance so that it is arranged like the swimsuit Jeanne was wearing in Fate/EXTRA." (Takashi Takeuchi)[16]

    [v] Fate/complete material IV: Extra material - Fate/Apocrypha - Joan of Arc, p.343

Joan of Arc, the Standard-Bearer who Correctly Guides the Holy Grail War
Joan of Arc is a Servant of the Ruler class, with the additional classification of the Saber class, designed by Kinoko Nasu. She is a Catholic saint born in Domrémy, France, and the heroine of France who liberated Orléans in the Hundred Years' War. She is a special Heroic Spirit summoned by the Holy Grail itself to act as the administrator of the "game" unlike other Servants. She is taciturn and cool when acting as a Servant, but her natural self is a plain and quiet sixteen-year-old girl. She puts order first, and will wield a sword for the sake of the rules, but fundamentally believes "all people and Heroic Spirits participating in the Holy Grail War are important".

    • Class: Ruler (Saber)
    • Source: Historical fact
    • Region: France, Domrémy

    Skill

    • Magic Resistance: EX

In addition to the Magic Resistance of the Saber Class, she demonstrates a high anti-magic from her unwavering piety. However, since it is just averting (evading) the Magecraft, only Joan will be saved against a wide-range magic attack. It cannot cope with the sacraments of the Church.

    • Revelation

A Skill equivalent to "Instinct". Instinct is a sixth sense regarding battles, but "Revelation" accommodates all matters related to the achievement of a goal (for instance, choosing the most suitable path while traveling). Because there is no basis (so she thinks), it cannot be explained well to others.

    • Charisma

The natural talent to command an army. Joan's figure participating in the assaults hoisting a flag raised the morale of the soldiers to the limit and united the troops. Thanks to her charisma, it is possible to make others believe in the contents of the "revelations" without basis.

    • Saint

Indicates being acknowledged as a saint. When summoned as a Servant, the ability of saint is selected one among "raising the effectiveness of sacraments", "automatic HP recovery", "1 Rank-Up to Charisma" and "production of a holy shroud is possible".

    Noble Phantasm

    • La Pucelle: The Crimson Holy Virgin

A holy sword that manifest flames which uses the line of a death poem "O Lord, I entrust this body to you---" as activation incantation. A conceptual crystallization weapon that interpreted Joan's burning at the stake in an attack-like fashion. A subspecies of Reality Marble, an imagined landscape crystallized as a sword. This sword is Heroic Spirit Joan of Arc herself and after the battle in which this Noble Phantasm was manifested, Joan will be extinguished.

    ... Touko-san's story, it's really long.

But I remember hearing something similar during a class in high school. What topic was it, in what subject. It was something along the lines that all humans are different, but connected in some way.

... Separate from that, in this story just now I imagined the Saint of Orleans. The old story of how a common farmer's daughter received the command of God to fight. They say that in reality all that happened was that she used tactics that the knights of that time didn't use out of contempt and honour, but wouldn't that also be because she was instigated by something.

Someone who acts like they have suddenly become a different person. Someone who only turns different for that moment to fight with some evildoer. That this was the guardian of the human race that they called the Counter Force.

    Talk about Jeanne d'Arc
Higashide: This is the main heroine Jeanne-san. Konoe-san’s version of her seems to have a slightly bigger chest. It goes without saying in her armored form, but even in her casual clothing, her side breasts are nice! It may be trivial, but I think she’s the best Servant who rigorously wields a flag in the world. The sight of her is far too striking.

Konoe: Laeticia-san is ideally close to Jeanne-san as a possessed vessel, but her bust size alone is just slightly bigger than Jeanne-san. When I saw the wonderful.

    Comment for Gilles de Rais
Takeuchi: He is a fairly troubled character Drawing this character with such strong peculiarities is fun.
Urobuchi: Already, he's more in the style of a creature than a Caster. He used to be such a good-looking guy... but what's really terrifying is his occult knowledge.
Takeuchi: I don't think he's that good-looking, but he does have an awfully pretty expression (laugh). Because he's a knight, his body build is also pretty good, so he has the possibility of being summoned as a class other than Caster, huh?
Urobuchi: Well, his summoning as a Caster is already against the rules. Though he ended up becoming a general, his most awesome asses wasn't his martial might but his money, right~?

God is Here With Me [Noble Phantasm]
Luminosite Eternelle. By brandishing her holy flag, she can convert her EX rank Magic Resistance skill into an equally powerful defense that blocks all physical attacks. It is the crystallization of the legend of Jeanne d’Arc waving her flag on the battlefield and fighting to the very end with hardly any wounds.
However, each time she uses it, she accumulates damages, so naturally she can’t withstand an Anti-Fortress Noble Phantasm multiple times in a row. Also, only Heroic Spirits who had witnessed Jeanne’s legend in life—in other words, only Gilles, in his past form as a Marshal of France, can use this Noble Phantasm besides Jeanne.
There are various theories about the flag’s design, with many popular suggestions featuring angels or flowers (specifically, the iris flower). Incidentally, Jeanne uses this flag mostly to attack in battle. “There’s a spear-point at the tip, so it’s a divine sign that this flag should be used to strike the enemy,” is what she says as an excuse each time one of the Servants she passes judgement on protests about it. Please stop.

The Crimson Holy Virgin [Noble Phantasm]
La Pucelle. The suicide-type Noble Phantasm used by Ruler. It is a Conceptual Weapon that crystalizes one’s mental landscape. It uses the Sword of St-Catherine, which Ruler never swung once in her lifetime, as its catalyst, and manifests the flames which once burned her to death. By using this Noble Phantasm, Ruler loses her own life. But in exchange for her life, she can annihilate anything in existence.
Its designated rank of C refers only to its pre-activated state while the sword is still sheathed. The EX rank after activating is because its pure destructive power cannot be calculated. These flames only destroy that which she thinks must be destroyed. In other words, this Noble Phantasm cannot be used against simply a strong enemy or out of emotions like hate.
These flames exist in order to save something, and in the novels she decided to use this Noble Phantasm out of her sense of duty to save the future of humanity.

Nasu: To summarise, there is a conspiracy in the finale of the story that intends to use the Holy Grail War framework for evil. As the Counter Force, the Servant Joan of Arc wishes to safeguard the framework of the Holy Grail War. Other Servants wish to protect their respective Master, but Joan wishes to protect the Holy Grail War. Although the development of the story may change depending on the Servant’s relationship with the Master, ultimately the story concludes with Joan activating her ultimate Noble Phantasm which she stubbornly withheld. The goal here is to create a world with a complete story, despite being an online game.
