Julius Belkisk Harwey (ユリウス・ベルキスク・ハーウェイ, Yuriusu Berukisuku Hāwei?) is the Master of Assassin in the Moon Holy Grail War of Fate/EXTRA. The older half-brother of Leonardo B. Harwey, he is a cold man whose sole purpose in life is to protect him.
Profile[]
Background[]
Although Julius was born as the eldest son of the Harwey family, he was an illegitimate child.[2] In truth, Julius is a Designer Baby.[3] As a child of the Harwey family Julius had high expectations placed on him, but it became clear while he was still in the womb that he was powerless and defective. The Harwey family threw him away as garbage for the reason “this child will bear us no profit” but Julius managed to survive thanks to his strange willpower, and in time he crawled up the ladder to his current position.[4] At a young age, he was experimented on by removing his kidney without being in an anesthetic state to see his pain response. The results showed him to be a failure with no ability. The Harweys concluded that he lacked the qualities of leading the family and was scorned for his existence.[2]
When Julius turned six years old, Leonardo B. Harwey was born.[4] Julius was fond of Leo's biological mother Alicia who showed him love and acted like a mother to Julius.[2][4] The short time Julius spent with her was the only time he was able to be like a normal child. However, it ended all too soon. Disdained as a defective product, he was given a harsh first test of his skill.[4] When Leo was three, orders were given to Julius to assassinate Alicia, to help secure Leo's inheritance. Julius was shocked as this was too sudden and there were no signs of warning.[2] “Leo will be the next King. Eliminate everything that is unnecessary to him.” said his father whose face he had never seen. It was a moonless night. He walked along the familiar path he often took to Alicia's room. Beautiful long golden hair. A calm and peaceful sleeping face. A small clicking noise resonated in the room as he started to pull the handgun’s trigger. Alicia's gentle voice haunts in his head.[4] Alicia's final request to Julius was to protect Leo. Julius accepted this role and supported Leo because of her words. “Take good care of Leo for me.”[2][4] Julius lost the only person who had ever tried to cheer him up, and at the same time he finally proved his worth to the Harwey family.[4] People started to despise him like an Evil Spirit whose hands were forever tainted.[2]
In order to be “profitable” for the family his youth was essentially discarded, and his body was forced by various medicines to rapidly develop into an adult body. After completing his first job, his existence was finally deemed to have some value. He was placed out of sight and out of mind in the Harwey assassin unit. This is why he has so much combat experience despite being as young as he is. He was able to gain enough sway over the other members of the unit through sheer willpower rather than relying on talent or his household’s authority.[4]
As Leo was selected to be the next head of the Harwey family, Julius became an Assassin in the Harwey Foundation's counter-terrorism unit,[5] being its captain and a skilled assassin who has worked in the shadows to eliminate many enemy forces.[4] If Leo is the light of the Harwey family, then Julius is the dark. Julius takes all the darkness upon himself and walks the villainous path.[4]
In the manga adaptation, Julius, like his brother, summoned his Servant on Earth prior to entering the Moon Cell.[6]
Appearance[]
Julius is a 25 years old man with short shoulder length, black hair with blank, cold black eyes. He wears a large black coat lined with fluffy black fur. Julius also wears blue gloves, light blue zipper pants, and blue shoes.
He reappears in the ULTM round on Day 1, with his hair seen to be slightly messy and combed to the back. He appears to have tired eyes, and his face seems is somewhat pale. This indicates the hardship he had to face when trying to escape his death during the previous round.
Personality[]
Julius does everything in his power to make it so that Leo will win, but he doesn’t do this out of loyalty to the Harwey family.[4]
Julius appears to be a mature and cold person. He seems to be protective of his younger brother and has the duty to kill anyone who gets in his brother's way of winning the Holy Grail war. Being an assassin, he will use any methods to accomplish his mission, such as trying to kill off Hakuno Kishinami before. He has a dark and cold aura around him, but it slowly disappears as the game goes.[7]
After he resisted deletion his personality completely changes. He starts to become insane, taking on an enraged and superior attitude when he faces Hakuno in the final week. Julius himself doesn't understand what's driving him but it was those feeling drove him to seek Hakuno. He seeks death so that it can put him out of his misery by killing Hakuno as his last victim. Julius could not accept Hakuno beaten him, as someone from the past and him living in the present. He believes it is his duty is to get rid of Hakuno, and allow Leo to lead the world as its king. After Hakuno defeats him, he is shown to actually have a soft side, before finally disappearing.[2]
Julius seems to possess some affinity for film. Being the only Magus capable of accessing the multimedia room, he uses a projector to try and spy on the battles in the coliseum and later refers to poorly made films in his speech.[8]
He reveals that he was empty ever since he was born. This changed when Leo's mother Alicia taught him that his life had values. She was the only person to show him love for he never loved someone before. He admits that no one can live without love, though only one person who ever loved him was Leo's mother. Despite this, he was assigned to kill her and after he'd done so, Julius was left in despair. Thinking to himself he would never be loved again, he decided that his only purpose in life would to protect his brother, Leo, as was Alicia's last wish and a motivation in life. He can no longer remember the exact events but he felt it was surreal. His goal was clear, to grant her final wish and join her in death. He calls his father as Master because he believes he has no right to call him father.[2]
Relationships[]
- HAKUNO Kishinami
- Julius believes he and HAKUNO are both garbage and less than human due to being a Dead Face. Julius sought to end HAKUNO's existence so he may return to where he belonged. Because HAKUNO bore the name and appearance of the original Hakuno, Julius occasionally became nostalgic while speaking to HAKUNO. He was confident that HAKUNO, an embodiment of utter hatred, would not thrive once he had defeated Julius.
- Hakuno Kishinami
- Julius thought little of Hakuno when they first met but became increasingly intrigued and annoyed as Hakuno continued to ascend during the Moon Holy Grail War and thus began viewing them as an obstacle to Leo's victory. He had attempted numerous times to hinder their progress by killing them or their Servant before the final battle, but failed. In his final moments, Julius found comfort in Hakuno who offered him kindness after learning about Julius's past. In Last Encore, it was Julius who revealed to Hakuno her existence as an NPC.
- Leonardo B. Harwey
- Julius is the older half-brother of Leo, who acted in the shadows to ensure Leo's victory. Unlike Leo, Julius was not as confident in the Harwey victory and was occasionally chastised by Leo for harboring doubt. While Julius may appear to respect Leo and regard him highly, it was Leo's mother Alicia who inspired Julius to serve Leo, not Leo himself.
- Li Shuwen
- Both Julius and Assassin made a living by stealing the lives of others, making them rather compatible. However, Julius was a man of few words compared to Assassin, so their opinions tended to clash. Julius did not care for Assassin and was willing to forcibly turn Assassin into a Berserker-class Servant to better suit his own needs.
Role[]
Fate/EXTRA[]
Julius was given the Servant Assassin who was summoned by another Wizard who used to be in Leonardo B. Harwey's service.[4] First presented as the teacher Souichirou Kuzuki, he is in fact Julius, the brother of Leo, hacking the profile of the original Kuzuki but using his own avatar.[9] In the preliminaries Julius is the only Master who thinks that Hakuno Kishinami might pose a risk. Thanks to Julius’s keen sense, he was able to see that the biggest obstacle to Leo’s victory was in fact Hakuno rather than Rin or other favored Masters. That naive amateur would prove to be a rock that the King would stumble on.[4]
In the real world, he is a cold-blooded assassin, and he came to protect his brother from the shadows by killing his opponents in any way. Rani VIII calls Julius the Black Scorpion (黒蠍, Kuro Sasori?),[10] while Rin calls him professional killer (殺し屋, koroshiya?).[5]
Julius will be Hakuno's opponent in the fifth round, regardless which route the player chose to go through. Julius attempts to kill off Hakuno quickly by making an ambush in the Arena, though their servant intercepts the attack, becoming badly injured. Since Julius's servant is invisible, Hakuno seemingly has no chance to defeat them.[11] With the help of Rin/Rani, Hakuno's servant recovers again, and reveals a hint at Assassin's true identity. Julius tries to kill Hakuno again in the school, but Kotomine stops them immediately.[12]
However, during the final confrontation, Hakuno will be given the choice to talk to Julius, and the questions thrown at him will push him into revealing some of his true self.[13]
When Julius is defeated, he resists deletion. He lets out a scream and disappears from sight, which leads to the question whether he is dead or not.[13]
During the first day of the ULTM battle, the arena is covered in a Reality Marble of 'absolute hatred', which leads to the conclusion that it was set up by Julius. While finding an escape route in the arena, Hakuno is by hit Julius's memories, though they are unclear.[2] Even after being defeated and dying, Julius remains as a vengeful ghost and once again faces off against the protagonist in the final layer. The reason that Julius is so obsessed with Hakuno is not because Hakuno is Leo’s biggest obstacle, nor because Julius realized the Hakuno's true nature. It’s simply because Julius is furiously irritated. Just like Julius, Hakuno worked his/her way up from the bottom. So when they met, Hakuno could immediately and clearly see through Julius, and this pissed Julius off to no end.[4]
Reaching the exit, Julius does indeed return with Assassin, who has now taken on traits of a Berserker through the use of a former Berserker Master's Command Spells, which Julius had stolen from another Master after his own command seals disappeared after Assassin's defeat. Julius explains that he was able to escape the Moon Cell's deletion and explains how he is unable to accept his defeat. Being torned apart by SE.RA.PH, he understood Hakuno's true nature. Hakuno is not even really alive, revealing to them that they are only a ghost created by the Moon Cell-based on someone who died twenty-years ago.[2]
After defeating them, Berserker immediately disappears, though Julius remains. Julius appears more calm, and slowly collapses to the floor. Despite everything he has done to them, Hakuno shows sympathy to Julius.[2] Julius would only find out the cause of his vengeful impulse in the final moments before his complete destruction.[4]
Seeing the kindness displayed by Hakuno, Julius finds himself pleased to see someone else is crying for him or is willing to understand him. He either attempts to wipe away their tears, but is unable to, or takes hold of their hand. Even so, he finally disappears with a smile. It is said that he finally finds salvation, and is reunited with his mother again.[2]
Last Encore[]
Julius was the Floor Master of level five, and his Servant was Assassin. The two had faced off against Hakuno Kishinami and Saber in the past and it was Julius who revealed to Hakuno that she was neither a magus nor a proper Master, but an NPC. This revelation temporarily discouraged Hakuno from continuing the fight, but Saber was able to cheer Hakuno back up.
Julius was defeated soon after by Hakuno, and subsequently died. However, a Dead Face in his image began roaming level five while his Servant, Assassin, was turned into a Berserker-class Servant and lost his sense of reason, requiring Julius to act as his mind.
Saber eventually returns to level five alongside a new master, HAKUNO Kishinami, and a companion, Rin Tohsaka. Julius personally fights against HAKUNO and laughs at the other's assumption that Julius is a ghost (a memory of Julius's death leads HAKUNO to assume this). Julius then reveals that neither of them are ghosts, but are garbage lesser than ghosts. HAKUNO proceeds to witness a vision from Twice H. Pieceman that reveals HAKUNO's identity as a Dead Face, much to HAKUNO's horror.
Julius and Berserker nearly kill all three of their opponents, but Rani VIII appears in time to rescue them. As with her previous Master, Saber tries to encourage HAKUNO to accept the way he is and to move forward regardless of the truth. HAKUNO does regain his resolve to fight and in the ensuing battle, he defeats Julius. Saber also dispatches Berserker.
Fate/EXTRA CCC[]
Julius also appears as a Master in CCC.[4] Julius works closely with Leo and Gawain in the student council. Julius is the Student Council’s secretary. He can be a bit gloomy, but he is a reliable young man.Since Hakuno can't remember anything, as far as he/she is concerned Julius is just a very slick handsome guy that always seems to be at Leo's beck and call. Actually Julius has retained just one memory. He remembers turning into a vengeful ghost and trying to attack the protagonist, and his resulting “complete destruction” (death). He didn’t die in the fifth round, and only died much later after becoming a ghost. BB has no idea that Julius survived till much later than the fifth round as a ghost, and mistakenly pulls the “ghost” version of Julius back into the fray of battle despite Julius knowing everything that will happen until the seventh round.[4]
When Jinako Karigiri went missing in the Sakura Labyrinth during in the 9th floor, Julius volunteers to search for her. When he found her, he worked along with BB to devour Jinako. After Leo and Gawain were defeated, BB revealed to Hakuno and the student council that Julius is a double agent.[14] After being employed as one of BB’s pawns Julius pretends to have died holding a grudge against Hakuno, but he actually takes action to support Hakuno from the shadows. The reason he does this goes without saying. In the last moment before being destroyed when he was ghost, Julius finally found the light he always desired.[4]
When Hakuno was thrown away by BB to be deleted, BB prepared a shape shifter shadow to delete Hakuno. Julius then appears through a portal door to rescue Hakuno. BB questions his betrayal and Julius reveals that he came to help a friend. BB thought Julius would hate Hakuno after Hakuno defeated him in the 5th round, but she didn't know the details about his survival in the 7th round as a ghost and how he made peace thanks to Hakuno. He sacrifices himself to force Hakuno to escape to the world of logo where Hakuno's servant is sealed.[15]
Fate/EXTRA CCC Foxtail[]
Other appearances[]
In the backstory of Fate/EXTELLA, Julius' role is unchanged from the Fate/EXTRA of the Moon Holy Grail War. He is openly hostile to Hakuno, and is Hakuno's greatest rival. Julius' special animosity towards Hakuno (and the Female Protagonist) is because Hakuno is the same type of person as Julius. On a deeply subconscious level, Julius rejects the notion that a normal person, possessing nothing and chosen by nobody, could rise to become Leo's greatest enemy. It also stems from Julius' irritation that he was unable to do the same. In the fifth round, Hakuno fights Julius in the fifth round. Nero is rendered unable to fight by Assassin's Noble Phantasm. With Casko's assistance, Hakuno challenges Julius and Assassin on his own.[16]
Abilities[]
Julius in real life is aging twice the rate of an average person, he was predicted to have about 25 years of lifespan.[2] Julius’s physical body that lies dormant on Earth is half dead. Julius's body has been modified so much that he will no longer be able to function normally as a Human after this mission. He is organically connected to the Harwey super computer. Using the backup of the super computer to his advantage, Julius pushes the limits of the rules in order to eliminate all obstacles to Leo’s victory. There is no future for Julius on Earth. He can never return alive.[4]
Julius is shown on many occasions to be a very capable and dangerous man. He is a Master, but not a Wizard.[4] He is a talented Spiritron-hacker. Using his hacking talents, he is first seen using the personal data of Souichirou Kuzuki to enter the war. His avatar is not that of a standard student or NPC.[9] He managed to lock down the AV Room for his own personal use.[8] He was shown to be capable of teleporting others into a space somewhere within the coliseum to allow his servant to dispose of them. Before the end of the preliminaries he is seen at one point surrounded by corpses with three more appearing in the hallway during the third round, implying Julius had disposed of them himself.
Even outside of the Moon Cell it is implied he was a competent and high ranking assassin within the Harwey Foundation's counter-terrorism unit.[5]
- seal_guard(); - This Codecast seals opponent's GUARD command. The effect would only last for 2 turns.
- heal(64); - This Codecast heals a significant amount of Health to the Servant.
Harwey Curry (ハーウェイカレー, Hāwei Karē?) is a black colored curry that’s made in a big metal drum found at the back of the old School building. Julius is the one who makes it. Its flavor can only be described as heavy and sticky, and its unrefined taste and substance feels like it’s going to stick in your stomach forever. The curry hasn’t even reached a level where you can debate if it is spicy or not, and frankly it’s probably just some coal tar. Surprisingly, it tastes good if you put it on watermelon.[17]
Forms and Alternate Versions[]
Ghost[]
After escaping deletion within the Moon Cell, Julius displays several unique, if highly frightening talents. He is shown to be capable at surgery through hacking, having grafted the arm from a Berserker's Master onto his own. He also altered the Arena of the Seventh Chimeric Lunar Sea into a Reality Marble, a space which Caster describes as a place built around targeting a single individual for revenge. In this space, not only has he sectioned off parts of the arena, preventing his target's freedom of movement, at several points, perhaps unintentionally, the space manifest spectral walls which allow access to fragments of Julius' memory.[2]

A Designer Baby is a child created with artificially modified DNA.
With this it is possible even for parents who have completely normal genetics to bear a child who possesses magic circuits.
Within the world of EXTRA, Shinji and Julius (among others) are designer babies.
Contrary to what people often think, Leo is in fact not a designer baby. His great knowledge, intellect and experience were instilled through a hypnosis learning method, and his body does not contain a single speck of artificially created parts. His existence is not something that was realized through human intervention, he is just a “Born King.”
