Kouma Kishima (軋間 紅摩, Kishima Kōma?) is the man who eliminated the Nanaya clan under orders of Makihisa Tohno. He is the head of the Kishima clan, a branch of the Tohno family.[1] He debuts in Melty Blood: Type Lumina.
Profile[]
Background[]
Kouma was born into the Kishima family as something that shouldn't have been born. He is the eldest son of the Kishima and their masterwork.[1]
Due to Makihisa Tohno's orders, he slaughtered the Nanaya clan. The last man standing was Kiri Nanaya and Kouma faced him to a death match, the gap between him and other humans was finally solved due to meeting the same type of person as him. Since Kiri was just a human, the outcome of the fight was decided from the beginning. Before long, it was Kiri's son, Shiki Nanaya's turn as well, Kouma turned towards him, but his mother covered him, protecting him from Kouma's killing blow.[2]
After the Nanaya clan massacre, Kishima voluntarily distanced himself from human society and lived as a hermit in the mountains[1] until 3 years prior to the events of Tsukihime, after Akiha decided to repent for her father's mistakes in time for Shiki's arrival on her mansion.
Appearance[]
Kouma’s design is nearly unchanged from his appearances in the original Tsukihime series, though the color of his hair is now jet black instead of dark blue. He has a large and muscular build, and his medium-length hair is always shown covering his right eye which Kiri gouged out. He wears a sleeveless black tangzhuang, black pants, and black fingerless gloves, forgoing shoes but partially wrapping his feet with black bandages. When not fighting, he also wears a white longcoat with a fur collar.
Personality[]
Usually very quiet, he chooses to live as a hermit in a remote area of the mountains where he seeks to achieve spiritual enlightenment. Because of this, he often speaks of worldly and spirituality.[1]
Despite his demon heritage, Kouma is a religious Buddhist, as noted by Ciel.[3] And despite his very violent behavior in the heat of battle, his violence is anything but mindless and is ironically a very disciplined warrior.
Vlov’s motivation of fighting for the sake of his wives is something he cannot relate to given his background.[4]
Role[]
Tsukihime[]
Kouma is first seen in a flashblack of the night of the Nanaya clan massacre, as Shiki Nanaya recounts this memory of his mother protecting him from Kouma.[2]
Kouma is mentioned early on, when Hisui mentions to Shiki that the eldest son of the Kishima family stayed at the Tohno Manor for close to three years.
Melty Blood: Type Lumina[]
Kouma arrives in Souya to discover the presence of a vampire in the city and sets out to eliminate them, despite not normally involving himself with such creatures. He is apprehended by Ciel, who considers him a threat, but he shows himself to be more thoughtful and soft-spoken than she expected. After locating and eliminating Vlov, he leaves confident that Akiha can manage whatever situation lured vampires to the city to begin with.[4]
Other appearances[]
Kouma is indirectly referenced in Fate/strange Fake, during the fight between Rin Tohsaka and Doris Lusendra, he is called "the real deal" that the previous head of the Lusendra family encountered when he traveled to Japan in order to devour a god, being referred to in narration as "a one-eyed man with thick oni blood in his veins" that slaughtered the previous head.[5]
Abilities[]
He is half-demon. Even among mixed-bloods, his demon blood is strong, making him only barely human. His demeanour in battle, however, reflects his innate strength and demon blood. His ability to use Scorching Heat means those in his way are often burned to ash.[1]
