Lancelot (ランスロットWP, Ransurotto?), Class Name Berserker (バーサーカー, Bāsākā?) is the Berserker-class Servant of Kariya Matou during the Fourth Holy Grail War of Fate/Zero.

He is one of the Servants of Ritsuka Fujimaru of the Grand Orders conflicts of Fate/Grand Order.

Profile[]

Identity[]

Also known as the Knight of the Lake (湖の騎士, Mizūmi no kishi?), the person serving as a negative symbol of the Arthurian legend.[3][7] The "Knight of the Lake", admired as the strongest even among the Knights of the Round Table.[3] He was extremely loyal to King Arthur as one of the Knights of the Round Table. Lancelot's downfall began when he fell in love with Artoria's queen, Guinevere.[8] It is said that the tragic love story of Diarmuid Ua Duibhne and Grainne later became the story model of Guinevere and Lancelot.[9]

Life[]

He was originally born and raised in France.[10] Having lost his parents as a child, he was raised by the Lady of the Lake Vivian and thus gained the alias "Knight of the Lake".[3]

He had heard rumors of the King of Britain. He believed the King of Knights in Britain was pure nonsense. He began to compare himself with the King of Knights until he decided to travel to Britain to see the legendary king with his own eyes.[10]

He met the King as soon as he landed in Britain in the midst of battle. It carved a deep impression of the King when he saw the sight of a young boy riding on his horse, gallantly swinging her sword in a horde of invaders. It proved how wrong he was, the requirement to battle day and night was not physical attributes but it was one who holds unwavering convictions. Lancelot had fought together with the King in that battle, and for his accomplishments he was granted the honor of speaking with her as a friend and invited to Camelot as a guest. Before long, he began desiring a seat on the Round Table. He became a knight among the Round table and saw many battles.[10]

He had many famous exploits, including once hiding his name and disguising himself to enter a horse race for the sake of a friend’s honor. Even after falling into a trap and being forced to face the enemy's blades with only his bare hands, he had proved victorious with his skilled fighting prowess using only an elm branch.

Downfall[]

When Sir Tristan left the castle saying King Arthur does not understand how others feel.[10] It was those words that began to trigger his insanity.[11] Sir Lancelot wishes to lessen the burden for his King, a wish that Guinevere also held. They conversed with each other and came to recognize each other as friends and rely on the other. It was then that Sir Lancelot became attracted to her. He learnt the King's secret from her.[10] Though the king was actually a woman, she had married in order to maintain the pretense that she was a man and the image of a stable royal family. Guinevere, in turn, willingly sacrificed her own life as a woman in order to preserve this ideal government.

When Lancelot and the queen began their affair, the Knight of the Lake considered fleeing Camelot with her, but his loyalty to Artoria and his sense of duty prevented him from doing so. When political enemies of the king learned about the affair, Agravain, who was working for Morgan le Fay, exposed the adulterous relationship to the public. The queen was ordered to be executed. Lancelot attempted to save her, killing several of his fellow knights including Gawain's siblings, Gareth and Gaheris, in the process.[12] He fled back to his own domain.

Lancelot, who was considered the perfect knight, Guinevere, the queen who had made her beloved betray his duty, and Artoria, the king who blamed herself for her loyal knight's despair, all suffered from the resulting fallout. Although Artoria forgave Lancelot's actions, Gawain still bore great hatred towards Lancelot for his betrayal and the death of his brothers.[12]

His disloyalty fractured the balance among the Knights of the Round Table. This incident eventually became the trigger of civil war and carnage, and the country shattered to pieces in the flames of war.[7] Lancelot, even after being excommunicated, wanted to participate in the Battle of CamlannWP to serve his King but Gawain hostilely rejected him, which helped result in the downfall of his King and country.[12]

When Lancelot heard the news of his King's death, Lancelot sank in despair and escaped through madness. Thus, when he became a Heroic Spirit, he was summoned as the insane Berserker.

Appearance[]

Berserker is a robust man fully clad in pitch-black armor and a rustic helmet with a thinly carved slit displaying the ghastly glow of his eyes. The armor is the work of the delicate and nuanced workmanship of its smith's utmost effort, succeeding in granting it an air of formidability and a fine construction. It is a perfect armor that can be called neither exquisite nor crude, and it instead perfectly melds magnificence and functionality. It is carved with countless marks and scratches, the highlights of his various military exploits etched into it to add a touch of valor. It is an ideal battle outfit that all knights could not help but envy.[13]

During life, he was an ideal incarnation embodying the true face of a "knight." Having lost his distinguished dignity of the past, he has been thoroughly changed by his descent into madness. Mad Enhancement and his anger have corroded him into his pitch-black form. He has a blackened face, the visage of a living dead man who has lost everything to a curse. He had a beautiful visage capable of drawing the admiration of many women, but his hatred has made him gaunt and pallid like a phantom. The only part of him filled with light is his eyes that are filled with hatred.[13] He retains his normal appearance while not under the effects of Mad Enhancement.

Due to For Someone's Glory, the identifying marks of his armor are hidden, only revealing the fact that he is fully clad in armor without any opening. It shows no ornaments or polished luster like that of Saber or Gilgamesh. Blurring the characteristic features and clues on the lineage of the maker, it makes him look like a "shadow", a bottomless black darkness like Hell. Once the ability is removed, the armor is easily identified as that of Lancelot. He lacks the radiance of Heroic Spirits, the "shine" that is the expression of their pride. There is no sign of the honor of his legend, the essential element of Noble Phantasms. This makes him closer to Assassin in nature, holding a "negative surge" like a vengeful spirit rather than a Heroic Spirit.[14]

In Fate/EXTELLA LINK, he has the following costumes:

  • Pitch Black Armor (漆黒の甲冑?)
  • Dark Formal (ダーク・フォーマル, Daku Fōmaru?)
  • Dark Elf Armor (邪妖精の鎧, Yokoshima Yōsei no Yoroi?) (DLC)

Personality[]

« I am the alienated, the ridiculed, the despised. No need to praise my name. No need to envy my body. I am the shadow under the radiance of heroic spirits. Birthed of the darkness of glorious legend. And so, I hate, I resent. Nourished by the sighs of the people precipitated within the darkness, people that curse the light. This is my disgrace. Because of her unsullied glory, I must forever be belittled. You are, the sacrifice. Good, give me more, your blood and flesh, your life. Let them ignite my hatred—!! »

(Berserker to Kariya)

As Berserker, his mind is under the effects of Mad Enhancement, limiting his rationality and ability to think. He gives off nothing but murderous intent and the thirst for blood, his deep hatred radiating out from him enough that he can easily be sensed even when he is hidden. He is able to battle with finesse due to his martial prowess, and he shows the ability to recognize that Lancer has been ordered to help him and take him as an ally for a short time. He still recognizes his King, instantly becoming hostile towards her and forgoing any orders in order to fight her.[8] He growls parts of her name, a moan full of malice hardly resembling human speech.

Lancelot was known to have extreme loyalty to his King during life as one of the people she considered to be a friend. She believes, even after their armies had clashed, that their hearts should still be the same, as a subject upholding the way of the knight and a king upholding the way of the knight. Saber is shocked in his ability to manifest as Berserker, that he who was the subject of people’s admiration could be reduced to that state. She cannot help but think their eternal partnership was nothing but a naive fantasy onto which she had clung upon seeing him in that state.

In one sense, he can be said to be a victim of Saber's righteousness.[11] Saber believes the root of it to stem from her hiding her gender. Seeking punishment for his actions, he was forgiven by the one person who he desired it from the most. The wretchedness he felt from that simple act was overwhelming for him. His guilt weighed down on him the more he adored his king, so his only salvation became to personally bring about her downfall. The atrocities he committed were of an insane and irritable young man, but ultimately driven by his overwhelming love for his king. He hated that she could remain an ideal king even after learning about the affair, and lamented how his king sacrificed herself for the sake of her country.

Fate/Zero[]

Fz Berserker (anime)

Berserker in Fate/Zero.

Berserker is summoned by Kariya Matou in the 4th Holy Grail War. Zouken Matou, deciding that Kariya was too lacking as a Mage, compensated by forcing him to obtain a Servant from the most powerful of the seven classes - namely the Servant of Mad Enhancement, Berserker. Until his identity was revealed, he was known simply as the Black Knight (黒騎士, Kurokishi?).[15]

During the War's first battle between the Servants, Lancer strikes Saber with Gáe Buidhe and attempts to finish her off, but their fight is interrupted by Iskandar. In the ensuing chaos, both Archer and Berserker arrive and engage one another in battle. They are evenly matched, with weapons of Archer's Gate of Babylon being caught and effectively wielded by Berserker to deflect any other weapons thrown at him.[16][17]

Archer is forced by his Master to retreat, but Kariya, unable to control his Servant any longer, is unable to order Berserker to do the same. As a result, Berserker turns his attention to the injured Saber, but is stalled by Lancer's interference. However, Lancer's Master, Lord Kayneth Archibald El-Melloi, decides that Saber is the greater threat, and uses a Command Spell to coerce his Servant into aiding Berserker. This order is quickly retracted when Iskander interferes again, attacking Berserker from behind and threatening to team up with Saber. Both Berserker and Lancer retreat soon after.

Fz Berserker using F-15 as Noble Phantasm

Berserker controlling F-15 to use as his Noble Phantasm.

During the battle against Caster, Berserker takes control of an F-15 jet to use as his Noble Phantasm, and engages Archer in aerial combat at his Master's behest. Their fight is left unresolved when Berserker catches sight of Saber, and ignores Archer in favour of attacking the female Servant. He is defeated when Archer strikes him from behind with a barrage of Noble Phantasms. His Master, Kariya, is likewise defeated when he engages Tohsaka Tokiomi in combat.[18][19][20][21][22]

Berserker is next sent out to kidnap Irisviel von Einzbern, in order to fulfill Kariya's end of a bargain with Kirei Kotomine. He uses his abilities to assume Rider's form, effectively fooling Saber and her Master into pursuing the wrong Servant. Saber engages the true Rider in battle, allowing Berserker to safely deliver Irisviel to his Master.[23]

Twisted Lancelot

Lancelot revealing his identity.

On the final day of the 4th Holy Grail War, Berserker engages Saber using submachine guns as his Noble Phantasm. (The anime depicts him with a Sniper Rifle and a Submachine Gun.) She manages to disarm him and damage his armour, but her killing blow is stopped short when Berserker deftly catches her blade between his hands. Saber realises that Berserker possesses knowledge of Excalibur's shape and length despite its invisibility, and deduces that he had known her when still alive. She demands that he reveal his true identity, to which Berserker responds by drawing his own sword, Arondight. His helmet finally shatters, revealing him to be Saber's old friend and greatest knight - Lancelot of the Lake.[13]

Overcome by guilt of how she had contributed to his downfall in life, Saber loses her will to fight, and is brutally battered by Lancelot. She blocks one final blow from Berserker, expecting the next to be a killing strike, only to have him completely cease all movement. At the instant of his last blow, Berserker's Master, Kariya, had been completely drained of magical energy, effectively cutting off Berserker's source of power.

Berseker gets killed by Saber

Berseker killed by Saber.

Taking advantage of the situation, Saber drives Excalibur into the frozen Berserker, dealing him a mortal wound. She tearfully tells him that she had wished to win the Holy Grail to atone for her past mistakes, including her part in Lancelot's death.

Having regained his sanity, Berserker admits that he wished Saber had condemned him for his crimes, and demanded penance of him. Instead, her willingness to forgive him made it impossible for him to forgive himself. Berserker collapses into Saber's arms, sighing that, in the end, he would die in the bosom of his king, like a loyal and just knight. Unable to sustain his physical form any longer, Lancelot fades away and was the fifth servant to perish in the Fourth Grail War.

« You were the greatest amongst the kings. All who served you… believed thus. »

Einzbern Consultation Room[]

Lancelot appears in Einzbern Consultation Room, a metafiction segment analyzing the story, taking place after his death. He appears as his normal self rather than under Mad Enhancement, shocking Irisviel and Student No.0's expectations of the Berserker-class Servant. He is humble and well-mannered, ashamedly standing outside hesitating to enter due to the deeds he committed. Throughout the episode, he makes several remarks about his past and the Grail War, as well as more personal opinions (the most notable of which being that he prefers Saber over Guinievere). He also reveals that, upon his summoning, he came into contact with the Greater Holy Grail of Fuyuki's corruption and thus he became familiar with the nature of the Grail.

Due to wishing for the Servants to be corrupted as a vessel for Angra Mainyu, Irisviel places a pot on his head to have him remember the darkness and slowly revert to Berserker. He tries to warn Student No.0 about Irisviel's true nature, but ends up reverting to Berserker and leaves in madness, only to be absorbed by the Grail.

Garden of Avalon[]

Lancelot recounts his and Guinevere's betrayal.[10]

Capsule Servant[]

MasterSaberfamily

Artoria's family in Capsule Servant.

There are two Lancelot in the game: the Berserker Capsule Servant, and the Lancelot in the world of Capsule Servant who is the son of Gawain and the brother of Master Artoria, Kay and Bedivere.

Fate/Grand Order[]

First Singularity: Orleans[]

Lancelot is summoned by Jeanne Alter to serve as one of her Servants. He and Charles-Henri Sanson encounter Ritsuka's party when they witness them attacking Marshal Gilles' soldiers with wyverns outside of Lyon. The two fight the group until Gilles arrives and bombards the wyverns with cannon fire. At this point, Carmilla orders the retreat, but Lancelot ignores her upon mistaking Jeanne d'Arc for King Arthur. So Carmilla orders him to hold the group off while she escapes with Sanson. He is defeated, calling out to Jeanne as Arthur, and disappears.[24]

Fate/Accel Zero Order[]

Lancelot helps Ritsuka's party kill Gilgamesh when they disrupt the King of Heroes' discussion with Artoria Pendragon and Iskandar.[25] After Gilgamesh perishes, however, Lancelot attacks Artoria when Kariya collapses from expending too much magical energy. The group helps her fight Lancelot, but Iskandar soon stops the fight. He has decided to ally with Kariya and Lancelot against El-Melloi II and leaves with them.[26]

Outside the Matou Mansion, however, Iskandar abandons the idea of Kariya and Lancelot being his allies upon seeing Kariya doesn't have his priorities straight. Lancelot loses Kariya as his Master when Kariya trades his right hand and Command Spells for Sakura, whom Iskandar captured while burning the worms in the basement. He is then left by himself after Iskandar has Mithrenes take Kariya and Sakura to a hospital outside Fuyuki and leaves. Zouken finds his mansion burning and Lancelot about to disappear. He then contracts with him to get revenge.[27]

At the Grail's Chamber, after Iskandar disappeared, Lancelot ambushes El-Melloi II on Zouken's orders. Zouken then orders Lancelot to kill the others, desiring to see the Grail completed despite its corruption.[28] Ritsuka's party kill Lancelot, but that, unfortunately, triggers the Grail's activation.[29]

Final Singularity: Solomon[]

Lancelot is among the "Orleans" Singularity Servants assisting Chaldea against the Demon Gods of the Melting Furnace.[30]

Interlude[]

Knight of Owner[]

Lancelot is brought to have a picnic with Ritsuka and Mash. Though Romani Archaman is concerned because Lancelot is a Berserker, Mash says it’s fine since he’s an understandable Berserker. However, further conversation is interrupted when a monster attacks the group. Mash can’t use her shield though because everyone’s lunches are on it. So Lancelot blocks the monster’s attack with chopsticks, then he uses a log to fight the monsters with Mash.[31]

For Someone's Glory[]

Lancelot joins Mash in a battle simulation (secretly at the highest parameters) as part of Romani’s plan to remove his helmet. However, he overcomes all of Romani’s best efforts to get his helmet off. Frustrated by his failures, Romani accidentally reveals aloud that everyone wanted to see Lancelot without his helmet. Complying with their request, Lancelot removes his helmet, but For Someone’s Glory prevents them from seeing his face. Though they’re disappointed, Ritsuka and Mash hope that Lancelot will one day reveal his face.[6]

Fate/EXTELLA LINK[]

Lancelot has been Oraclized to be a member of Karl der Große's New Holy Empire.[32]

First Route[]

If Hakuno's forces intercept Karl's forces at Mare Origio, Lancelot appears along with Darius III and Medusa.  He assumes the form of a Shadow Lancer, and hides among the others in effort to ambush the Hakuno's Servants.  He is eventually discovered, and forced to retreat for a time after being bested in combat. He returns later when Darius and Medusa have retreated, but he is defeated again.

Final Route[]

Lancelot is in charge in defense of Carolus Patricius when Hakuno's forces assault it. He repeats the tactic he did in the first route, but he's discovered and forced to retreat. He returns later, but he is defeated again.

Other appearances[]

In Type-Moon's April Fools' Day 2009, moon.cinemas.jp is a fake movie theater site listing a number of parody films. He was featured in Tank Man (戦車男, Sensha Otoko?), a parody film of Densha OtokoWP. Berserker plays the role of Sensha Otoko's Eirei Throne Channel internet friend with the nickname U to O (ウtuオ, U tu o?). He's a surprisingly nice guy but he is a man with a phobia of face to face and he uses his sketchbook to write his speech and thoughts. His role is expanded in TYPE-MOON 10th Anniversary Phantasm where he lives in the Matou family with Kariya and Sakura Matou. He and the other Eirei Throne Channel suggested Sensha Otoko to buy a Saber figure for El-Melloi Girl. When Kariya was stalking Aoi Tohsaka, Berserker calls him delusional and Kariya retaliate by throwing objects at Berserker. Kariya accidentally thrown an apple at Berserker's Saber Lily figure to which Berserker dived and saved it from falling. Berserker started to damage Kariya with his ability and they started to fight.

In Fate/kaleid liner PRISMA☆ILLYA 3rei!!, Sakura installs Berserker Class Card. She was able to use Knight of Owner to steal Shirou's projected Noble Phantasm.

Abilities[]

Lancelot was born with numerous abilities and aptitudes that took him beyond the realm of "high-spec" right into "completely overpowered".[7] With his signature weapon Arondight in hand, he was considered an unrivaled swordsman,[13] the strongest when it comes to individiual prowess.[2] Not only was he reputedly unbeatable in his time,[33] but he is famed as the strongest of the Knights of the Round Table.[7] As he often fell into madness many times due to troubles involving Guinevere, he has a particular compatibility with the Berserker class.[7][2] In this class, his Magical Energy comsumption is increased,[34] so it is considered worthy of praise how Kariya Matou, a weak Master who relies on Crest Worms, lasted as long as he did.[21][34]

Combat[]

Lancelot wears a perfect black set of full-body armor. It is neither exquisite nor crude, but a seamless blend of magnificence and functionality. The delicate, nuanced workmanship of a smith who gave his utmost effort succeeded in giving it an air of formidability and fine construction. The countless marks and scratches etched into the armor serve as carvings, highlighting the wearer’s illustrious military exploits and adding a touch of valor. It is the ideal battle outfit that all knights cannot help but envy.[13] Paired with Lancelot's own Endurance, it makes him an incredibly durable Servant. Not even direct exposure to the subsonicWP convection currents at the back of an F-15 Fighter jetWP is able to face him.[20] He was also capable of enduring multiple direct hits from Gilgamesh's Noble Phantasms, although it incapacitated him.[18] In another occasion, Lancelot reacted to a surprise attack of Iskandar's Gordius Wheel, luckily avoiding the maximum impact of its two wheels by crawling away of its path. However, just getting trampled by the eight hooves of the two divine bulls injured him so much he couldn't even stand afterward.[16] His helmet also took a direct blow of Artoria Pendragon's Invisible Air, albeit it was noted that this was thanks to Artoria not getting a perfect shot.[13]

Charlemagne regards Lancelot as a worthy opponent. In fact, maybe a little TOO worthy.[32] Despite having forsaken his reason for Mad Enhancement, Lancelot remains a remarkably skilled warrior.[16] He is familiar with the full extent of Artoria Pendragon's abilities, so he is able to utilize accurate and prudent battle tactics against her. He hunts her by continually giving chase without allowing her to retaliate so as to slowly strangle her.[18] He knows every detail of her sword from its shape to its length like the back of his hand, which allows him to predict its path even while it is sheathed in Invisible Air.[13] Nevertheless, Artoria, while crippled by Gáe Buidhe, is capable of defending herself from his relentless attacks, forcing an external force such as Diarmuid Ua Duibhne to break the stalemate.[16] According to Sola-Ui Nuada-Re Sophia-Ri, Diarmuid's decision to aid Artoria was correct. In order to defeat Lancelot, he had no choice but to team up with her. However, Kayneth El-Melloi Archibald strongly disagreed with her. Due to his Master's Perspective, he believed that Artoria's strong abilities made her a greater threat than Lancelot.[17]

Lancelot and Mash Kyrielight working together defeated a virtual simulation of Shadow Servant Gilgamesh. While Mash states that they barely won, Romani Archaman claims that Lancelot made it look like a walk in the park.[6] Furthermore, in Accel Zero, the combined efforts of Lancelot, Diarmuid Ua Duibhne, Zhuge Liang, and Mash managed to defeat and kill the actual Gilgamesh. However, Lancelot consumed so much Magical Energy in that fight that his Master Kariya Matou collapsed and fell to the ground. Lancelot later fights Artoria Pendragon, Diarmuid, Zhuge Liang, and Mash. Diarmuid disarms him with Gáe Dearg, but Iskandar saves him before Ritsuka Fujimaru can finish him off.[26] Lancelot is extremely fatigued from his consecutive battles,[26] however, he eventually forms a new contract with Zouken Matou and presumably regains his full strength.[27] He is defeated by a team comprised of EMIYA, Diarmuid, Artoria, and Mash.[29] In the First Singularity, Lancelot and Charles-Henri Sanson fought Mash Kyrielight, Marie Antoinette, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, however, they were incapable of getting past Mash's shield. Jeanne d'Arc while weakened was capable of blocking one attack from Lancelot. Lancelot was then defeated by Jeanne and Mash.[24]

Iskandar states that he could probably defeat Lancelot with just his war chariot.[22]

Skills[]

Class Skills[]

  • Mad Enhancement (C Rank): Rank up for all parameters except Luck and Mana, but in exchange, Berserker can no longer think and speak properly.[1][2] It is noted that only reason Lancelot was able to fight Gilgamesh as well as he did was thanks to his parameters being boosted by Mad Enhancement.[34]

Personal Skills[]

  • Protection of the Spirits (A Rank): A blessing from Elementals; the capacity to increase one's Luck in dangerous situations. Activation is limited to battlefields, where it is possible to perform feats of arms.[1][2]
  • Eternal Arms Mastery (A+ Rank): Mastership of combat arts has reached the point of being said to be unrivaled in one's era. By completely merging his mind, body, and technique, it is possible to make use of full fighting skills even when under the influence of any sort of mental hindrance.[1][3][2] Thanks to this skill, Lancelot's martial prowess hasn't faded at all despite having lost his sanity.[33]

Noble Phantasms[]

Lancelot's first Noble Phantasm is Knight of Owner. It transforms any normal object he holds with his hands into a D-rank pseudo-Noble Phantasm as long as it can be recognized as a "weapon". However, in the case where the stolen Noble Phantasm is originally higher ranked, the original stat is preserved.[2] Presumably thanks to this ability, Lancelot was a powerful enemy against any Servant in the Fourth Holy Grail War excluding Diarmuid Ua Duibhne,[35] whose Gáe Dearg can nullify the Magical Energy enhancements of Lancelot's weapons.[16][17][35][26] Knight of Owner is particularly compatible with Gilgamesh's Gate of Babylon,[16][19][21][25] making Lancelot his natural enemy.[16][19] Tokiomi Tohsaka considered Lancelot a more threatening opponent than Artoria Pendragon's Excalibur, but lesser than Iskandar's Ionioi Hetairoi.[21]

Lancelot's most notable weaponry includes:

  • Noble Phantasms from Gate of Babylon: Lancelot was capable of enduring the continuous attacks of sixteen of Gilgamesh's arrows. He would catch one of them mid-air and use it to deflect the rest, only switching weapons once he got a stronger one than the one that he was currently wielding. Their fight was stated to be evenly balanced until Gilgamesh opened twice as many gates, a number of weapons that no one present, not even Lancelot, could have endured.[16]
  • F-15J Fighter JetWP: Lancelot used it in his second fight with Gilgamesh, who was riding Vimana.[20] Artoria Pendragon's good command of her footwork allows her to rival the jet in speed.[20]
    • M61 VulcanWP: Normally, cannon shells pose no threat to a Servant, regardless of the size of the caliber. This is especially so with Artoria Pendragon, whose physical abilities would allow her to evade them with no difficulty. However – no matter how extraordinary the Heroic Spirit may be, the 12,000 rounds per minute of the M61 autocannon present an unmanageable amount of shots. Furthermore, the weapon is enhanced with Lancelot's Magical Energy, a single shot would instantly be fatal. While Artoria would be capable of destroying the F-15 with Excalibur, Lancelot's battle tactics, prudence, and previous knowledge of Artoria's abilities, made it so that his attacks didn't give her any opportunity to counterattack.[20]
    • Four Sparrow MissileWP: 26 pound explosive that is magically enhanced by Lancelot. Typically would function using radar waves, but Lancelot's enhanced version tracks down the target of his animosity. Gilgamesh blocked these missiles with 2 shields from Gate of Babylon.[20]
    • Four AIM-9 SidewinderWP
  • Small Machine Guns provided by Kirei Kotomine: They fire bullets faster than the Speed of soundWP, however, they are still unable to surpass the speed of Artoria Pendragon's sword. Nevertheless, the speed of twenty-odd bullets per second leaves her only able to parry. Furthermore, Artoria sensed that even though she was a Servant, if she were hit she would be fatally wounded.[13]

Lancelot's second Noble Phantasm is For Someone's Glory. Originally, it was an ability that not only allowed him to hide his True Name, parameters, and appearance, but to disguise himself as another Heroic Spirit. However, he can no longer use this last ability due to the influence of Mad Enhancement. As a Berserker, its full capabilities can only be used if his Master forces him with a Command Spell, as shown when Kariya Matou made Lancelot disguise himself as Iskandar to kidnap Irisviel von Einzbern.[23]

Lancelot's true Noble Phantasm is Arondight. It is a Divine Construct with the same origins as Excalibur, a weapon that was only allowed to be wielded by the greatest knight of its time.[13][36] In exchange for sealing away For Someone's Glory and Knight of Owner, Lancelot receives a boost in his parameters.[36] It allows him to unleash his true ability, showing skill with the sword completely incomparable to his previous level.[13] Furthermore, it deals extra damage to Heroic Spirits with the Dragon attribute.[36] In fact, the increased damage is so great that it surpasses Artoria Pendragon's innate regenerative capabilities. During the duel between the two, Artoria was defeated the moment she realized Lancelot's True Name. With her will to fight shattered, Lancelot's strong prowess was many times greater than her own. Due to this, all Artoria could do was defend herself to prevent receiving a fatal blow. However, it is noted that even if Artoria had been in perfect condition she might not have been able to withstand the strong momentum behind Lancelot's relentless blows. Arondight's main weakeness is that it multiplies Lancelot's normal Magical Energy consumption many times. It not only surpasses the limit of Kariya Matou's Crest Worms, but comsumes the amount of energy that would have allowed him to remain in physical form even without a Master for several hours in just ten seconds. It is implied that Lancelot would have killed Artoria had he not ran out of energy at the very last moment.[13]

Development[]

King

Lancelot first appearance in Fate/stay night [Realta Nua] soundtrack.

Lancelot first appearance in the illustration cover of Fate/stay night [Realta Nua] soundtrack.

The scene with Berserker fighting Gilgamesh with a fighter jet was planned from the start, so Gen Urobuchi worked towards making it. He especially wanted an "Itano Circus", a unwieldy and unnecessarily large amount of missiles that will not even hit properly based on Ichiro Itano's work in MacrossWP, from Gilgamesh's Gate of Babylon.[37]

The anime version has heavily revised the Berserker's flashback scenes. Gen Urobuchi explains that the sudden change from the battle to a flashback would make the audience lose tension from the inconsistent timeline.[38]

Tomonori Sudo (Supervising Key Animation Director) explains that they had the plan of "there's a black haze" with Berserker. He wanted to clearly show the haze that was hiding Berserker's real body. Naturally they thought of animating Berserker and then pasting the haze on top, but then the haze wouldn't look three dimensional. In the end, pictures are flat, so even if you paste the haze on top, it wouldn't have any depth. That being the case, he figured that if they applied the haze to the 3DCG, maybe they could get that sense of depth. So first they animated Berserker, then swapped out for 3DCG, and applied the haze to that. It was a fairly tedious process, but he thought it would be best to show Berserker.[39] Masato Takizawa (Berserker 3DCG Supervisor) explains that he had to tweak parts like warping and altering the scale so Berserker's movements wouldn't look like stiff CG animation. Although there were a ton of difficult areas over the course of the series, he believe that all the hard work really can be seen on the screen and made for better visuals. He think that shows like this that are so beloved by the audience comes around once in a blue moon, so it is a real honor for him to be given the opportunity to take part in it.[8]

In episode 23 "The Sea at the End of the World", Berserker's movements are first drawn with keyframe animation, and then a 3DCG Berserker is animated to match, and finally, black mist is added over the top of that. After the mist clears, Berserker is fully animated using keyframe animation. Just like Kariya, the animation staff worked so hard they coughed up blood when they animated Berserker. Kei Tsunematsu was in charge of the storyboard for this episode.[8]

Creation and Conception[]

Protozeroberserker

One of the early designs of Berserker.

Berserker's armor was designed by Hirokazu Koyama for Fate/Zero. He was told to give Berserker the appearance of a dark hero with a "bucket with a slit in it" for the helmet. He gave him a massive outer appearance, and utilized various parts similar to Saber's armor to assemble it. Only the slit in the helmet remained from the original design order, and just from the outline of the head, it is a rather simple silhouette that still manages to carry the impression of the armor. Within the discarded designs, there was a period where the slit featured a more eye-like design.

His original feel for the character was one of a great gap between his thin, weak looking appearance and amazing power and speed. The design of the back of the armor was added on afterwards, but fit in unexpectedly well. Takashi Takeuchi was surprised Koyama made such a complex design from the simple instruction of a "Bucket Helmet", and thought "This sort of design must be pretty valuable." Gen Urobuchi also wondered how such a design would end up looking good, imagining a "slit-like eyepiece" like what was used in the final design.

Takeuchi designed Lancelot's face easily, thinking "This guy is so unlucky!" while drawing him. The difference in his facial features between his living form and that under Mad Enhancement is like the difference between an ibisWP and an amoebaWP. The expression Lancelot makes next to Bedivere, like that of someone being punished for doing something wrong, makes Takeuchi tear up when looking at it. Urobuchi feels Lancelot is more beautiful as a handsome man with a shady past rather than an unrestrained playboy.[4]

Atsuhi Ikariya was in charge of the character design for the anime version. He drew Berserker like a mecha, so he used lots of shadows and lines and tried to give a sense of the metal of the armour.[8]

Ryōtarō OkiayuWP (Voice actor of Berserker) talks how it was surprisingly hard to pick out lines in the scripts as his lines were mostly just screaming "Aaaah!". When he was recording "Sound Drama," he was told that the "Aaaah!" howl was him trying to shout "Arthur", but his hatred is so strong that he can't get the word out. He thinks it is hard to pick up on that when he first appears, but he made a point of going "Aaaah!" after they started the second season. He was really happy that he got to deliver some proper lines in the last two episodes.[8]

Lancelot (Berserker) was illustrated by Hirokazu Koyama in Fate/Grand Order His scenario writer is Kinoko Nasu in Fate/Grand Order[2]

Reception[]

Okiayu said from a visual standpoint, the staff of Ufotable has really pulled out all stops on Berserker. When he heard that they could only finish a handful of cuts in a day, he was shocked at the craftsmanship. Since the visuals weren't done when he was recording, he only did growls and howls for timing. Okiayu said that a lot of people didn't know that he was playing Berserker in the first season because he's always howling.[8]

Shingaki Tarusuke (Voice actor of Kariya Matou) stated that every scene featured Berserker is a classic scene.[8]

    Profile
The "Knight of the Lake", admired as the strongest even among the Knights of the Round Table.
His adulterous love with Queen Guinevere invited the ruin of Camelot - surely, an individual who is the negative symbol of Arthurian Legends.

    Level 1 Bond
    Height/Weight: 191cm・81kg
    Source: Arthurian Legends
    Region: England
    Alignment: Lawful Mad Gender: Male
Once the greatest knight; but, consequentially, his error was too severe.

    Level 2 Bond
Having lost his parents as a child, he was raise by the fairy of the lake Nimue and thus gained the alias "Knight of the Lake".
Upon reaching adulthood, he crossed over to the Isle of Britain and, after meeting with King Arthur, joined the Knights of the Round Table. It has been said that none could compare to his valor and chivalric mentality.

    Level 3 Bond
For him to surrender himself to his feelings towards Queen Guinevere was an inevitable outcome for his chivalry. If his treachery towards the king was promptly met with ruin, he would probably have been saved. However, because his valor was peerless, this situation brought about the worst possible outcome.

    Level 4 Bond
"A Knight Does Not Die Empty-Handed"
    Rank: A Type: Anti-Unit
    Knight of Honor.
An Ability Noble Phantasm that implements the attributes of "one's own Noble Phantasm" to anything he puts his hands on. No matter what armament, no matter what kind of weapon becomes a pseudo-Noble Phantasm equivalent to D Rank.

    Level 5 Bond

    • Eternal Arms Mastership: A+

Martial dexterity that reached the point of being boasted as peerless in a given era. By complete unification of heart, technique and physique, it is possible to display one's former combat power even while under the influence of any kind of mental restriction.

    Interlude
The tenacity of a knight who feel in the depths of regret despite being bathed by too much honors; especially due the feelings of love and hate pointed towards the King and the Queen that can never reach an answer, he continues to be imprisoned by eternal madness.
The black knight continues to fight, seeking the sole meeting that might appease his agony.

    Koyama's comment
I accepted an order that said to make him look like a dark hero and settled on giving him a massive outer appearance. It runs counter to expectations, but if you look at it closely, you should see that it is assembled from parts that are similar to Saber's armor. It is so complex that it would be hard to make a video game sprite, huh? If you could do it, make it 3-D from now on. Make it look gloriously three dimensional and whatnot. [Koyama]

    Koyama's comment
The order was for a bucket with a slit in it, but right now only the slit remains. From the head alone, it is a rather simple silhouette, but it still carries an impression of the armor. In the discarded designs, there was also a phase where the design was more eye-like. [Koyama]

    Koyama's comment
Initially, I imagined him as a character that had a great gap between his thin, weak-looking appearance and amazing power and speed. The black deign was tacked on later, but fit unexpectedly smoothly. Remember. the tentacles lie flat. [Koyama]

    Initial design
I was taught the heel looks like it's floating a little.

    Comment for Lancelot
Takeuchi: Koyama was responsible for the armor's design. Because he drew it in a very complex form, I thought it was something like "This sort of design picture must be pretty valuable." I did not think he would develop so much from the original instruction of "Bucket Helmet"! (laugh)
Urobuchi: That was a pretty irresponsible order, hu-uh? I kept pondering how the heck I would make a bucket helmet look cool!? I surely really wanted it to be a "slit-like eyepiece", in the end. And then, the current form.
Takeuchi: I finished the design for the face with no trouble at all. I kept on thinking "This guy is so unlucky!" while drawing him.
Urobuchi:I thought Lance would be more beautiful as a handsome man with a shady past than an unrestrained playboy.

    Takeuchi's comment
Lancelot during the era of the Knights of the Round Table. I think you wouldn't know it because the picture was trimmed, but on the jacket of the PS2 Fate soundtrack, Lancelot is actually standing across from Bedivere. His expression, like he's being punished for doing something wrong, makes me tear up. [Takeuchi]

    Sir Lancelot [Servant]
The "Knight of the Lake", famed as the strongest of the Knights of the Round Table.
His illicit love affair with Queen Guinevere drove Camelot down the road to ruin, tarnishing his legacy in the legends of King Arthur.
As he often fell into madness due to troubles involving Guinevere, he has a particular compatibility with the Berserker class. In a lot of ways, he's just a guy who pushed himself too hard.
He was born with numerous abilities and aptitudes that take him beyond the realm of "high-spec" right into "completely overpowered", and none of them were any help at all in solving his problems. But while I could sort of sympathize with him, at the same time I couldn't help but feel a little bit of black joy that so many terrible things happened to such a handsome and talented person. But then the girls in class just looked at me in disdain, like, "Eww, so jealous, gross!" while screaming in shrill voices about how cool Lance-sama is, and… ahem. Sorry, I'm getting off track here.
Anyway, if he and King Arthur had just been able to have an all-out brawl to satisfaction on a sandy beach under the evening sun, so many tragedies might have been avoided. Well, there's no guarantee, of course, but the fact remains that whatever else happened that was the one thing that Lancelot's nature never let him do. He even tried going insane to change that part about himself, but just ended up causing the way-too-serious Artoria to misunderstand a lot of things instead. Really, it makes me wonder if his origin is "being a nuisance" or something.

Master Session 004 - Berserker Side

    Kariya Matou
    Berserker's Master.
Second oldest son of the Matou family, one of the three founding Mage familes.
Although his Magecraft aptitude was higher than his brother's, he hated the vile nature of the Matou family's magic. To save Sakura, the daughter of Aoi Tohsaka, he agrees to participate in the HolyGrail War. As a side effect of the Crest Worms, half his body is twisted and distorted. Atsushi Ikariya was in charge of the character design for the anime version.

    Berserker
A mad knight Heroic Spirit who is clad in black armor. The "Berserk" affinity was added to him, as he is unable to speak, and he refuses to obey his Master's instruction. His abilities include For Someone's Else's Glory, which conceal his own abilities, and Knight of Honor, which allows him to turn anything into a Noble Phantasm. He demonstrates an unnatural fixation on Saber. Atsushi Ikariya was in charge of the character design for the anime version.

    Worms
The Matou family uses Worms in their Magecraft. In combat, they can be summoned and employed at will. There are various kinds, including the flesh-eating Blade Wing Worms that Kariya employs, and the Crest Worms that crawl around the Worm Pit.

    Zouken Matou
Head of the Matou family. After repeatedly extending his life, this Mage is already not quite human. He is well versed in all things related to the Holy Grail, and gives Kariya Crest Worms. He observes the proceedings of the Holy Grail War from a distance.

    Comment
    Berserker 3DCG Supervisor Masato Takizawa
With Berserker's movements, I tweaked things like warping the parts and altering the scale so that it wouldn't look like stiff CG animation. Although there were a ton of difficult areas over the course of the series, I believe that all the hard work really can be seen on the screen and made for better visuals. I think that shows like this that are so beloved by the audience comes around once in a blue moon, so it's a real honor to have given the opportunity to take part in it.

    Lancelot
A knight of the Round Table who served Arthur (Artoria). He falls in love with King Arthur's wife, Guinevere, and this dishonor brings about the fall of Britain. Also, in the anime, he is drawn with keyframe animation after his face is revealed. Because his complex armor was bring drawn by hand, it involved huge amounts of time and effort.

  9. [v] Fate/Zero material - Encyclopedia: Diarmuid Ua Duibhne [Servant], p.100

    Diarmuid Ua Duibhne [Servant]
The Lancer class Servant of the Fourth Holy Grail War, summoned by Kayneth El-Melloi Archibald. A hero of the Fianna, spoken of in Irish mythology. The story of his tragic love affair with Grainne would later become the model for the story of Lancelot and Guinevere. It's no wonder that the Berserker of the Fourth Holy Grail War has such bad compatibility with him!
In battle, he wields two Noble Phantasms: the Crimson Rose of Exorcism (Gae Dearg) which temporarily nullifies the effects of magical energy, and the Yellow Rose of Mortality (Gae Buidhe) which inflicts cursed wounds that cannot be healed by any means.
His basic parameters are not particularly high, but he excels at using battle tactics designed to trip up enemies stronger than himself. In particular, he is the natural enemy of those Heroic Spirits which rely on the powers of their Noble Phantasms to fight. Depending on his strategy, it's even possible that he could have won the entire Fourth Holy Grail War (or suffer a humiliating defeat at the hands of Assassin).
Out of all the Servants in the fourth war, he had the second-worst compatibility with his Master. Though, if his very first opponent had been anybody besides Saber, he might have been able to fight in a way more in line with his Master's expectations. For you see, it was Saber's serene beauty and grace which kindled the flames of chivalry within his heart. Also, while he was summoned as a Lancer this time, and therefore carried the twin demonic spears Gae Dearg and Gae Buidhe, his legends also speak of a pair of demonic swords: Moralltach and Beagalltach. So, there was actually a decent chance he could have been summoned as a Saber. Or rather, that's probably what Kayneth was hoping for…

01 - Excalibur Galatine: The Resurrected Sword of Victory
The sword of Sir Gawain and the sister sword to Excalibur. It is said that like Excalibur, Galatine once belonged to the Lady of the Lake. However, its legend have been overshadowed by its more famous counterpart, and therefore very few people know of its true significance.

Another difference is the while Excalibur was said to absorb light radiated from the Earth, Galatine reflected the warming rays of the Sun.

02 - Knight of the Sun
While King Arthur was ruled by the movement of Artemis, the goddess of the moon, Sir Gawain drew his strength as a knight from the sun.
It is said that his power are at their greatest when the sun is at its zenith.

    03 - Excalibur
Arthur, said to be the mightiest of all the kings to rule Britain, is believed to have ruled sometime in the fifth or sixth century.

The sword that is said to have proclaimed his rule was bestowed upon him by the Elemental known in legends as the Lady of the Lake. The entire episode was passed in the stories collectively known as "King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table."

    Details

    01 - Character Background
One of the major knights mentioned in the Arthurian legends and often thought to be King Arthur's nephew.

A knight said to be equal of Sir Lancelot, Gawain was frequently at odds with Lancelot due to his slaying of both of Gawain's brothers. Although pure of heart and loyal beyond question, it was Gawain's all-consuming hatred that not only led to him being stripped of his knighthood, but also led to the downfall of King Arthur himself.

Although his hostility inevitably led to his death at the hands of Sir Lancelot, he realized that it was his own lack of virtue that led to Sir Lancelot's betrayal and the defeat of King Arthur at the battle of Camlann Hill.

Up until his death, Sir Gawain was considered a paragon of knighthood; chivalrous, loyal, and gallant. Even as King Arthur became a legend, Gawain was content to stay in the background, doing his duty regardless of whether his efforts were acknowledged or not. In reward for his gallantry and loyalty to Arthur, as well as his eventual forgiveness of Sir Lancelot, Gawain was resurrected as a Legendary Soul and, freed from the sins of the past, has once again reclaimed his role as the "Knight of the Sun."

02 - "The White Knight of the Round Table."
The White Knight of the Round Table.

Widely considered to be equal of King Arthur by many and the wielder of the lesser-known holy sword Galatine, Sir Gawain was fiercely loyal to the king, or more accurately, the King's station. Unlike Sir Bedivere, a trusted friend of Arthur's who wished only that he would find peace and contentment, Gawain's only concern was that Arthur maintain the throne of Britain.

If King Arthur was seen as the personification of the moon, then Sir Gawain was the harbinger of the sun. He was frequently compared with Arthur, although Gawain himself ignored these comparisons and devoted himself to serving his king to the best of his abilities. Though loyal to the end, his irrational hatred of Sir Lancelot proved to be his and Arthur's undoing.

Though Arthur eventually forgave his wayward knight's transgressions, Sir Gawain could not find it within himself to do the same until the very last moments of his life and only after being stripped of his knighthood, excommunicated from the church, and causing the downfall of his sovereign king.

With his dying breath, he swore that if he was ever given a second chance at life, he'd support his king, no matter what. Upon being reincarnated as a Servant, Gawain devotes himself completely to the goals of his Master and by doing so hopes to gain absolution for the sins of the past.

    [v] Fate/Zero material - Encyclopedia: Matou Kariya [Person's name], p.103-104

    Kariya Matou [Person's name]
The little brother of Matou Shinji's father, Byakuya.
The gutsiest, most rebellious person in the history of the Matou family – against that monstrous old man, just standing up to him and running away was a heroic act of valor. Of course, from Zouken's point of view, no matter how much better Kariya's magic circuits were than his older brother's, they weren't worth the effort it would take to break his will and train him into a proper family head. In fact, at that point he had probably already decided that he had no choice but to bet everything on Byakuya conceiving an heir that would turn everything around. Unfortunately, in the end his longshot gamble backfired spectacularly, and instead of a miracle that would save his lineage, he got Shinji.
By the way, even Kariya's childhood friendship with Aoi was set up by Zouken, who had become aware of the Zenjou family's excellent hereditary trait long before the Tohsaka. However, due to Kariya turning his back on sorcery and getting cockblocked by Tokiomi, the old man's plans once more came to nothing.
…Well, Kariya bringing his beloved Aoi back to some horrid worm pit was never going to happen in the first place. Maybe if the Matou sorcery was a little more normal, he would have been willing to obediently accept his inheritance and become Tokiomi's rival for Aoi's affections.
For a makeshift magus, Kariya's suitability as a Master was exceptional. The fact that he was able to endure the maddened Lancelot's outrageous magical energy consumption for as long as he did is a feat truly deserving of praise. While he might have been better off if Zouken hadn't punished him by forcing him to summon a Berserker, well… I hate to say it, but the only reason Lancelot was able to fight Gilgamesh as well as he did was due to the parameter boost from being maddened. And given the single-minded devotion with which Kariya was pursuing Tokiomi, there's no way you could expect him to have the prudence to avoid that powerhouse team and survive to the very end. When all's said and done, as long as he carried the Matou spirit of putting grudges before everything else, he was probably doomed to failure no matter what.

    [v] Fate/Zero material - Encyclopedia: Kayneth El-Melloi Archibald [Person's name], p.095

    Kayneth El-Melloi Archibald [Person's name]
Kayneth demonstrated genius level talent during his time as a student. He was the youngest lecturer to grace the podium of the Department of Evocation in its history. His skills were not only in research, but also politics. Due to his great lineage, he had extensive connections. He was expected to form the greatest faction in the Clock Tower.
He did not participate in the Holy Grail War due to necessity or duress, it was merely to add a splash of "martial prowess" to his life's story. That was it. Although he did not severely underestimate the Three Founding Houses, he did boast that Lord El-Melloi could overwhelm them by skills alone.
The reason Kayneth brought many dangerous Mystic Code had nothing to do with research, but for entertainment value. Kayneth had talents not only in Spirit Evocation, but also in many fields of magecraft. He was really a man of many talents like Gennai Hiraga or Cao Cao.
Kayneth even considered the Heroic Spirits ---- Servants, to be part of his stock of Mystic Codes. Because he never acknowledged the humanity of Servants, he did not understand Diarmuid's loyalty even until the very end. As a result, he effectively lost through self-destruction.
However, Diarmuid was not choosey of his Master, he would acknowledge anyone who would accept his loyalty. As a result, he did not understand Kayneth as a person either. If Diarmuid really appreciated Kayneth's talents and experience, then Kayneth would have treated him with a much softer attitude.
To Kayneth, unable to bond with his Servant was the second most unfortunate event at the worst. The most unfortunate event by far was encountering Emiya Kiritsugu. Although as a mage, Kayneth won by an enormous margin, as a killer, he was miles behind Kiritsugu. It was inevitable that Kayneth would lose in a melee such as the Holy Grail War. Because of Kayneth's sudden death, his many valuable research accumulated in the Clock Tower was unorganized and left unattended. Although they were almost lost, the most useless formal student suddenly appeared to save the day. He had an unusual talent of "could not put magecraft to practice, but ingenious in the reinterpretation of theories and classification of systems". This student eventually compiled a tome named "Lord Kayneth's Encyclopedia of Arcane Secrets", which laid the foundation for the flourishing of House El-Melloi and its descendants.
By the way, in the Fourth Holy Grail War, the following strategy would insure the absolute victory of Team Lancer:

    • Kayneth must not let his Servant recognize such things as honour on the battle field or knights' pride. He must let Diarmuid realize that the Holy Grail War was merely dirty chores that needed to be done.
    • In order to fulfill the previous item, Kayneth must avoid any contact between Diarmuid and Saber with his best effort.
    • In combat, Kayneth must prioritize securing an exit. In a battle, missions would be considered accomplished if Diarmuid scored one hit with Gae Buidhe. Repeat this tactic, and exhaust all hostile teams.
    • Capitalize on Team Berserker. Team Berserker was a powerful enemy against all other teams, but Lancer had an advantage due to compatibility. It would be optimal to let Berserker destroy the other teams and reach the finale. He could then be defeated at that point.

    About Berserker Side
Nasu: But, I was moved to tears by that last conversation with Lancelot. Nobody was at fault… Nobody was to blame!
Urobuchi: I think that’s the most heartbreaking thing about it, though.
    Nasu: Ah, it really is.
Urobuchi: The scene would have been totally ruined if Alexander had barged in, huh?
Nasu: That’s Dead Weight Alex for you, lol
He’d start his lecture with something like “Well, be that as it may…”.
Urobuchi: Sounds like something out of Hana no Keiji.
Nasu: Then, “It’s all your fault!” “And also, it’s your fault too!”
     “So, become my subordinates!”
Urobuchi: That’s exactly what he’d say!
Nasu: Of course, their response would be “What the hell is this guy going on about!?"
Urobuchi: Right, it’d be a total negotiation failure.
'Nasu: And Alex would just tilt his head to the side and wonder, “Hmm, did things go poorly?”
    Anyway, about Berserker’s ridiculous Noble Phantasm… were you aiming at “that” from the start? That… f i g h t e r j e t.
Urobuchi: Yup! Basically, I really, really wanted to fight Gil with a fighter jet. I worked toward it with all my heart and soul!
Nasu: We should call you Yagami Gen. ”Just as planned!”
Urobuchi: I thought the Gate of Babylon would be perfect for an Itano Circus.
Nasu: Whoosh! The swords are homing in! Ornamental swords, holy swords, demonic swords, shitty knockoff swords!
Urobuchi: Especially that last one! That’s the heart of the Itano Theory.
    Nasu: Because they won’t hit!
Urobuchi: Filling up the screen with missiles that won’t home properly is very important.
    Nasu: Right, right.
Urobuchi: It truly is profound, the Itano Circus.
Nasu: But, a motorcycle that flies through the sky is going too far!
Right? Is it really okay, including that Braiger kind of thing?
Urobuchi: What? Of course it flies. Because it’s a motorcycle. Also, you’re thinking of Baxinger.
Nasu: It can turn into a bazooka, too, right? It can do anything, this motorcycle. I bet it even turns into a battleship.
Urobuchi: If it was Gil’s Noble Phantasm motorcycle that probably wouldn’t be too far off.
    Nasu: It’d be a suuuuper-awesome Itansha, lol
Urobuchi: You know… it might be too extreme, but… what if we made it a Super Cub?
Nasu: Ah, now THAT’S a Noble Phantasm. Definitely.
    Takeuchi: A golden Super Cub.
    Nasu: I waaaant one!
It’s the very model of majesty and grace!
Urobuchi: Gil making his appearance on that… it would be just like WWE SmackDown.
Nasu: Circling the ring at 3 kph, lol
    While the spectators go wild.
Takeuchi: Ahh… I can almost see it, that armored figure straddling the bike.
Nasu: Wow, everybody really loves Gil, huh?

  38. [v] Fate/Zero Blu-ray Disc Box II English Translation booklet: Introduction, p.003-004

    Introduction
    Special issue
    Gen Urobuchi:
To give a specific example, allow me to explain Berserker's flashback scenes, which were probably the most heavily revised from the original. In the original novel, it is a scene that jumps to an entirely different time period that is inserted right in the middle of the duel at the end. It is precisely because the depiction of the fight had been placed in the back of the reader's mind as a concept that it was possible to depict and link this to his past as a separate narrative thread.

With that said, in the visual medium, because the audience takes in the battle in the underground garbage by means of sight and sounds, the scene has a sense of place which helps to make it seem as if they themselves are there. If the point of view were to suddenly shift to another time, another story, the tension that suffused that showdown scene would suddenly evaporate. Although humans can develop differing concepts in parallel, they can only focus on and process one view point at a time. If the anime version has ignored this difference and stayed slavishly true to the original novel and revealed Berserker's past in exactly the same way, the viewers probably would have felt a visceral sense of incongruity and instantly been thrown out of the moment.

The same goes for the flashback scene where Gilgamesh reminisces about Enkidu. In the novel, I took care to write it with deliberately vague, ambiguous imagery to depict Gilgamesh's flashback so as not to ruin the afterimage of Excalibur's activation scene that immediately preceded it. However, this sort of allowance isn't possible in visual media. Every scene is depicted with the same resolution and the same sense of presence as time unfolds at the same pace. So with that in mind, they had no choice but to place both the catharsis of Excalibur and the information dealing with Enkidu on the table and decide between. Of course, it was obviously the former that was more vital to the overall story.
