Lancer (ランサー, Ransā?) is a Lancer-class Servant summoned by Ritsuka Fujimaru in the Grand Orders of Fate/Grand Order.
Profile
Identity
Lancer's True Name is Musashibou BenkeiWP (武蔵坊弁慶WP, Musashibō Benkei?), the Warrior Monk (荒法師, Arahōshi?), who was the legendary warrior monk that served Minamoto no Yoshitsune, whose exploits are documented in the GikeikiWP (義経記WP?), The Tale of the HeikeWP (平家物語WP, Heike Monogatari?) and numerous other accounts. As a loyal and widely beloved retainer, he possessed both resourcefulness and bravery, with knowledge of Kabuki and JoururiWP, widely beloved.[3]
This Heroic Spirit, is actually a completely different individual named Hitachibou Kaison (常陸坊 海尊WP, Hitachibō Kaison?), whose existence has little evidence. Originally, Hitachibou served Yoshitsune alongside the real Musashibou Benkei, having a brief mention in the Gikeiki where they shared joy and sorrow. Ultimately nothing more than a supporting role, in their final battle at Koromogawa no Tate (衣川の合戦?), he abandoned his comrades instantly in fear for his own life. Motivated by guilt and shame at his cowardice, he attained a limited immortality with study of esoteric Buddhist practices, and assumed the identity of Benkei for the remainder of his years, spreading the legend of Benkei's ideal heroism and unyielding loyalty.[2][3] It is in part by Hitachibou's efforts that Benkei attained status as a Heroic Spirit. He is said to have served to influence Yoshitsune's tale in an unexpected manner in the Gikeiki, said to have taken the stage as the narrator who survived the battle of Koromogawa to pass down Yoshitsune's legend in many places. The shameful Kaison is said to have taken the impressive duty to go beyond his shame and live in disgrace, wandering around.[3] Unlike his legend, Benkei doesn't have a weak spot, although he feels pain when he is kicked to his shin.[2]
Legend
Musashibou Benkei is the most famous spearmen in Japanese history. He was rumored to had been the child of an Oni. Musashibou Benkei was known for his loyalty, valor and a great strong man. He is the ideal image of a hero who fought bitterly to end together with Minamoto no Yoshitsune. Just by swinging his Naginata, ordinary soldiers would had their bodies blown off at once and just by roaring, starving wolves would be on the run. There is also many traditions transmitted to the present, such as Benkei's daunting pose and Benkei's weak-spot in his shin.[2]
Appearance
Personality
Incidentally, his imitation of Benkei is imperfect, and occasionally hints at his true personality through facetious and jesting.[3]
His wish to the Holy Grail is to make Benkei's great renown eternal. Although that wish is already half-way granted, so long the deeply ashamed Kaison has a mouth, he will probably continue to narrate eternally.[2]
Role
Fate/Grand Order
Fuyuki: The Contaminated City in Flames
Benkei is a shadow servant in Fuyuki singularity, Shadow Lancer joined forces with Shadow Assassin to kill Ritsuka Fujimaru, Mash Kyrielight and Olgamally Animusphere. Cú Chulainn arrived to support Chaldea and vanquish both of them.[4]
GUDAGUDA Honnouji
Benkei appears in the singularity under the name Musashibou SessaiWP. After setting up camp, Sessai is told by Imagawa Yoshitune to prepare a banquet in two seconds. He hastily goes prepare the banquet whilst telling Imagawa to stay guarded as camp location is dangerous. Imagawa tells him that there is nothing worry about with their Mini-Nobu army, but Sessai only worriedly agrees with her. Later, he and Imagawa see the Chaldea group approaching them as they're running from Matsudaira Arash's Stella; Sessai wondering if they're the reinforcements Matsudaira sent for. Then, both he and Imagawa are struck by Stella, as they were too busy wondering what it was after Sessai answered Imagawa that he didn't set up any fireworks for the banquet. As both begin to disappear, he states that the current situation is why he told her to not let her guard down before disappearing, and tells her that they should leave while they've the chance.
Kara no Kyoukai: The Garden of Order
Benkei is one of the Servants missing from Chaldea to serve as a tenant of Ogawa Apartment. He resides in the first room, which is oddly cold despite thermometer showing otherwise. He is confronted by Ritsuka, Mash, and Shiki Ryougi when they enter his room. Mash tries to talk to him, but he attacks the group saying they abandoned a respectable way of life. After he is defeated, Romani Archaman tells the group that Benkei will eventually return to Chaldea since he's contracted to it.
Onigashima: The Demonic Fairy Tale
Benkei meets Ritsuka, Mash, Ushiwakamaru, Fuma Kotaro, and Sakata Kintoki when they enter the slave village beyond the first gate. He tells the group there is another settlement higher up, and explains he was looking for them when he ended up in the village. He decides to join them in slaying oni when an oni patrol appears. After slaying the oni, the group observe how people's wills have been broken by the oni's oppression. They then leave the village for the settlement higher up the mountain. On their way there Ushiwakamaru asks Benkei how he got past the checkpoint. He reveals he actually fell off the cliff and ended up in the previous settlement. The group notice the cliffs are too narrow and steep for them to circumvent the checkpoint. So they go with Kotaro's plan for them to distract the guards, then have Kintoki charge in while they're causing a commotion inside. Kotaro dons an Oni disguise while the others (expect Kintoki) pretend to be human slaves he's bring in. Bringing them to the checkpoint, Kotarou tells an oni there that they were requested by the great oni. However when observing the group, the oni notices Ushiwakamaru's small frame and shameless outfit, and doubts she can do any work. However, Benkei tells the oni that she is a seductress, then he knocks her out to "eliminate" her as a threat to the oni. Benkei then drags her unconscious body past the confused oni guard. Once inside Kotarou sends a signal to Kintoki, and after he arrives, the oni are sent into complete disarray. Defeating the oni, the group get past the checkpoint while Ushiwakamaru ponders why Benkei is so powerful on the island.
Continuing on the pass, Benkei suggests they gather information at a tea house in the settlement up ahead that he visited before. There he gives Ushiwakamaru some tea, but she gets drunk from it and takes a jizo statue she mistakes as her brother. After some antics involving it and oni, the group arrive at the second gate where they encounter Tamamo-no-Mae. They defeat her and the great oni she summoned, Wazahamimaru, and then unlock and pass through the second gate.
Arriving in the settlement where the teahouse Benkei told them of is, the group encounter Shuten-douji and Ibaraki-douji. Both of the oni girls are seen working at the teahouse, inviting and welcoming customers of both human and oni alike. The group learn from Shuten that a spell had been cast on all oni and humans from their current location down, and the Grail used to serve wine isn't strong enough the alcoholic mist like in Rashomon. They end up fight her and Ibaraki when Kintoki rejects her proposal to join forces to find the mastermind behind the related cases of Rashomon and Onigashima. During the fight, Ushiwakamaru is left fatigued by her fight with Ibaraki, who goes to unleash her Noble Phantasm. However, Benkei uses his body to block it, and Ushiwakamaru disperses the flames with Kikenjō - Icicle Cutting after jumping from his shoulders. Eventually as Ibaraki struggles against the group, Shuten offers her the Grail's wine to grant her the power she had in Rashomon. However, the group is saved by the arrival of Minamoto-no-Raikou, and with her help, Shuten and Ibaraki are forced to retreat. The group continue the mountain while Raikou chases after the pair.
Arriving at the third and final gate, the group encounter Kiyohime there. They defeat her and Gorikimaru, and then unlock and pass through the final gate. At the summit, they find Raikou standing before the Grail, but Kintoki recognizes her as her oni self, Ushi-Gozen. She reveals she had acquired the Grail and constructed Onigashima using the Authority inherited from Gozu Tennou to create a kingdom for those scorned for their appearance, using the oni that she drew into existence as a expendable workforce. She confesses she mortally wounded Shuten and slew Ibaraki a moment ago. She then tries to convince Kintoki to join her since the island was made for him. She also reveals that she is responsible for the Rashoumon incident to make everyone kill each other by getting them intoxicated with the Grail's wine. Kintoki refuses her offer, so the group fight her. However, Ushi's immense strength proves too much for them. She prepares to finish them all off when Shuten appears and ambushes her, but she is slain by Ushi afterwards. Using the opening made by Shuten, Kintoki eventually defeats Ushi with Golden Spark. Returning to her regular self after waking up, Raikou apologizes to everyone for her behavior despire having no recollection of being Ushi. After comforting her, everyone returns to Chaldea.
Babylonia: The Absolute Frontline in the War Against the Demonic Beasts
Benkei is one of seven Heroic Spirits summoned by Gilgamesh to defend Mesopotamia from the Demonic Beasts from the north. Together with Ushiwakamaru, he slays the Demonic Beasts around Uruk. He later eats with Ritsuka, Mash, Merlin, Ana, Ushiwakamaru, Leonidas, and Siduri in the Chaldean Embassy. He confirms to Romani Archaman that Gilgamesh is the only one providing them with magical energy. He then explains Gilgamesh summoned seven Heroic Spirits after Merlin, but now only four are left. He continues that Gilgamesh formed their Spirit Origins with his own magical energy during the summoning. Essentially incarnated, they can eat and sleep like humans, and generate their own magical energy.
During the days of Ritsuka and Mash helping the citizenry of Uruk, Benkei and Ushiwakamaru join them in investigate into the possible affair of the armorer's wife. The investigation leads the group with discovering and stopping a plot by an underground species, one of whom is the armorer's wife, to invade the surface. Afterwards, Benkei explains how Gilgamesh previously sent scouting parties to investigate the jungle in the south, but none of them ever returned.
Later when Ritsuka, Mash, Merlin, and Ana are tasked with investigate the jungle, Benkei and Ushiwakamaru do a practice battle with them to congratulate them for being entrusted with such a task by Gilgamesh before they leave to help Leoniadas. After the battle, the pair commend the group for their skills. Benkei warns them though that two Heroic Spirits summoned by Gilgamesh, Amakusa Shirou and Fuuma Kotarou, also never returned from the jungle. He also states how Ibaraki-douji defected from Uruk and fled somewhere, while Tomoe Gozen perished killing Girtablilu, the general of the Demonic Beasts.
Benkei, Ushiwakamaru, and Leonidas later meet the group at the Northern Wall when they're tasked to rescue the remaining populace of Nippur. As part of the rescue operation, his and Ushiwakamaru's unit will head towards the city from the east to distract the Demonic Beasts while Ritsuka's group enter from the west. However following the failed operation and Ushiwakamaru's supposed death, Benkei leaves the Northern Wall since he blames himself for her death, and heads for the ruins of Nippur.
When Tiamat's Laḫmu are massacring the Mesopotamian populace, Benkei is defending the people of Ur from them. He later arrives to save Ritsuka, Mash, Quetzalcoatl, and Jaguar Man when they're about to killed by the corrupted Ushiwakamaru and her clones by grabbing her. Despite both of them being impaled by her clones, Benkei still lives to her surprise. He tells her that her hatred for humans doesn't come from Tiamat, but something she always felt. He confesses he was unable to bear it, and pities the loneliness she must have felt. He says the original Benkei never wanted to leave her alone, even though he couldn't save her heart. After proclaiming he cannot bear her anger, Benkei uses The Pilgrimage of the Five Hundred Arhat to disconnect her from the Chaos Tide and destroy them both.
Salomon: The Grand Time Temple
Benkei is amongst the "Babylonia" Singularity Servant to aid Chaldea against Demon Gods Pillar.[5]
Merry Christmas from the Underworld
Interlude
In his interlude Destroyer Monk (破壊僧, Hakai Sō?), Benkei wants to train due to being tired of being on standby, so Mash suggests a mock battlefield to safely train at. After defeating a few mock Servants summoned by Mash, Benkei desires a opponent that won't hold back. Both Mash and Romani think it's strange though that the last Servant's parameter were set so high, but Romani is suddenly cut off from the group when a Shadow Servant suddenly appears. After the shadow Servant is slain, Benkei wishes to go back to Chaldea, but more Shadow Servants appear that have grown to be on par with Servants. While Mash wants to retreat, Benkei decides that the Shadow Servants should be destroyed, which Mash agrees with. After defeating the Shadow Servants, Romani is able to communicate with the group again. Deciding that they've trained enough, Benkei gives his thanks to Ritsuka.
Capsule Servant
In Capsule Servant, Lancer is one of the many available servants.
Abilities
Having fought to the bitter end together with Minamoto no Yoshitsune in many battles and having become the idealized image of a hero, Benkei is the most famous warrior monk of Japanese history.[2] He's strong enough to defeat multiple Laḫmu at once, however, he is defeated by Corrupted Ushiwakamaru.[6] He also claims he'd be no match for Gorgon, who had been empowered by the Holy Grail and Tiamat's Authority, becoming a Divine Spirit.[7]
His Noble Phantasm is The Pilgrimage of the Five Hundred Arhat. With it, he's able to peel off Ushiwakamaru's Spirit Origin signature out of Tiamat's Authority, therefore stopping the Sea of Life of respawning more of her clones.[8]
Class Skills
- Magic Resistance (C+ Rank): Cancel spells with a chant below two verses. Cannot defend against magecraft on the level of High-Thaumaturgy and Greater Rituals. He has a remarkable resistance to Japanese-related Witchcraft.[1]
Personal Skills
- Vengeful Spirit Exorcism (A Rank): A skill with an invocation of nine characters - the kujiWP Rin Pyou Tou Sha Kai Jin Retsu Zai Zen (臨兵闘者皆陣列在前?) - curses of evil origin may be defended against and nullified. If successful, an opponent's use of Magecraft may be sealed. In certain circumstances, appropriated by the Servant as part of his own repertoire in a limited capacity.[1][3] Musashibou Benkei possessed a similar technique as a monk (described in a passage of The Subscription List), and the Servant has imitated said ability with his own skills as an actor.[3]
- Imposing Stance (B Rank): A Skill that reproduces the famous episode that Benkei once managed to carry out. Of course, because he is not actually Benkei himself, Lancer has no ability to sublimate this into a Noble Phantasm. Instead, it is recognized as a simple defense enhancement and being able to make himself a target, falling into a state where attacks are concentrated towards him.
- Blank Subscription List (— Rank): A skill that reproduces the famous episode that Benkei once managed to carry out. He forcibly enforces a Noble Phantasm sealing order, but since he is not actually Benkei the sealing probabilities are low.[1] A counterfeit decree with an effect equivalent to a Command Spells expenditure originating from an opponent's Master, which orders that "no Noble Phantasms may be used" within a given engagement. If successful, even if the targeted Servant is unfooled by apparent origin of the decree, it must be obeyed. A mental interference technique with a probability of negated each turn with a successful roll of a resistance check on the part of the opponent. However, in the condition that the influence of the skill is removed, reapplication becomes possible.[3]
- Attendant of Iron (C Rank): With proximity of presence alone, the Servant is capable of reinforcing his Master's physical attributes. The original Musashibou Benkei possessed six black birthmarks, said to have appeared because his mother ingested metal (kurogane) during her pregnancy. Itsuki, in the Shinto tradition, was a title ascribed to servants of a god; Yoshitsune, a beautiful child, is regarded to have possessed the aspect of a godling, and Benkei was his faithful servant. The ability "Kurogane no Itsuki" may have been designed to mimic this pattern.[3]
Development
Creation and Conception
Lancer was designed by Jinroku MyougayaWP and character designed by Katsuya Terada for the canceled Fate/Apocrypha online game project and not included in the final version.[3] He was collected along with the other thirteen initial Servant designs in Fate/complete material IV. The project was revived in novel format afterwards, but he was cut along with David, Saint George, and Sakata Kintoki, in favor of Vlad III and Karna. Benkei's design has been reused elsewhere. Yuuichirou Higashide outlined him as a Servant whose mentality was very complex which made him hard to act as a partner to a Master, but the Master-Servant pairs had already been decided and there was too little room for him to cut in. The fact that he was a Japanese Servant also played a factor, so he was unfortunately retired from the running.[9]
Yuuichirou Higashide is the scenario writer for Benkei in Fate/Grand Order.[1]

Noble Phantasm
- Eighth Implement
An opponent's Noble Phantasm may be temporarily claimed as the 8th of the Servant's Seven Implements, and manipulated with some proficiency even if its usage is unfamiliar. A weapon claimed in this manner will be returned to the opponent of its origin after a certain number of turns, but may be launched as a projectile to deal damage upon return. Rather than owing to some inability on the Servant's part to permanently maintain an eighth implement, he opts to relinquish an implement upon satisfaction of his curiosity in its use.
- Benkei Butsu
Slicing the space about him with a long blade, the servant manifests multiple replicas of Benkei, equivalent in attributes to his base level of strength -- and capable of walling off the original from an opponent's attack. A single deployment of the Noble Phantasm creates one to seven replicas at random, and the results cannot be determined by the servant. The Servant's own attributes are temporarily boosted by a function of the number of replicas that remain manifest and undestroyed.
- The Pilgrimage of the Five Hundred Arhat
Five hundred Arhat -- those who embark upon a pilgrimage to the Pure Land of the West in an effort to attain Enlightenment in life in a practice known as Fudarakutokai -- are summoned, streaming forth in a holy procession. All those who stand within their path that fail a resistance roll are dragged with them, ultimately dematerializing to the Void with the procession. Amen.

[] Fate/Apocrypha material - Encyclopedia: Restructuring [Others], p.187-188 [T] Discarded Servants [Other]
The Servants who experienced the bitterness of being discarded in the transition from the proto-version of “Apocrypha” featured in “Complete material IV” to the official light novels.
The one who disappeared first was Sakata Kintoki. As an enemy to the protagonist side, he’s a far too nice guy to fight, and as an ally, he’s very reliable. Furthermore, one aspect of the plot that was decided near the beginning was that “Frankenstein will use her Noble Phantasm and revive”, so Frankenstein had to take up the slot for the ally Berserker, causing Kintoki to be discarded. The next one to be cut was Musashibou Benkei. In his case, I briefly outlined him as a Servant who’s mentality was very complex which made him hard to act as a partner to a Master, but the Master-Servant pairs had already been decided and there was too little room for him to cut in. Most of all, there were three Lancers drafted in the first place, and the remaining two were Vlad III and Karna. The fact that he was a Japanese Servant also played a factor, so he was unfortunately retired from the running.
During this period of the plot creation, the following had already been basically decided: “Romanian stage. Vlad III’s big fame bonus. Central Servants are Jeanne and Astolfo, and the rival Servant is Amakusa Shirou Tokisada.” Therefore, the next one to be retired was Georgius. Since he would be the third saint in the story, he would have to be included in the ideological conflict between Jeanne and Amakusa, but I feared it would become too confusing. Also, considering the final outcome of the story, his value as a character dimmed further since his Noble Phantasm would cause the metamorphosis midway through the story, so he was discarded.
Now then, one of the two planned Riders has been discarded and left an empty Rider slot, so let’s think of possible choices. If possible, it should be someone really famous who wouldn’t be too intertwined with the main plot of the story… With that thinking, the candidate that came to mind was Achilles.
I want one more Servant suitable to act as a rival to Achilles on the opposing team from him. For example, how about his teacher Chiron? But in that case, one of the initially planned Archers would have to be discarded.
At this point, it was already decided that Atalanta would oppose Jeanne, so she had to be in the Red camp like Achilles. The remaining Archer was David. There was no problem with him as an ally character-wise, Vlad III was planned to be made the head of the Black camp. If there were another world-famous king on the same team as him, his relationship with Vlad would become complex… As such, David was the last one to be discarded.
This segment has already become very drawn-out, but, well, I have say to congratulations for them all getting to make a return in “Fate/Grand Order”…リストラ【その他】
