Subspecies Singularity III: Shimosa[]
Houzouin Inshun is defeated by Saber of Empireo and cursed by Ashiya Douman after fighting the Swordmasters to let Ritsuka Fujimaru, Miyamoto Musashi, Onui, and Tasuke escape. After his corruption, he confronts his former compaions as they continue escaping. He reintroduces himself by his Cursed Name: Lancer of Purgatorio. Musashi fights him when he targets the children for killing. She decapitates him, but he gets up and reattaches his head. The group escape to the village, hide in a nearby haystack. Inshun tries to antagonize Musashi by massacring the village. Afterwards, he massacred the villages to the north and the west.[1]
He comes to the hermitage and attacks Senji Muramasa. Muramasa dodges and destroys Inshun’s upper body with a single blow. Inshun regenerates and boasts there isn’t any technique nor blade that can reach the Spiritual Core of a Swordmaster. Regenerating from another attack, he reveals what he did before coming to the hermitage. He claims his body is now a puppet controlled by karma, so only his complete destruction will stop him. Musashi then challenges Inshun to a duel to reach the apex of her mastery. Inshun responds by casting a spell similar to a reality marble, a field of corpses where the loser’s soul will be consumed. Thanks to Myoujingiri Muramasa, Musashi was able to reach Inshun’s Spiritual Core and kill him.[1]
Interlude: Battle with Oneself (Not a Metaphor)[]
Abilities[]
Lancer of Purgatorio stands as one of the strongest Heroic Spirit Swordmasters. During the Shimosa Subcategory Singularity, Saber of Empireo questioned if Caster of Limbo was really up for the task of taking down Miyamoto Musashi. The reason for this is that she had defeated Purgatorio already. On the other hand, Musashi points out that whereas she had to imagine 30 different scenarios to figure out how to defeat Purgatorio, she sees herself beating Archer of Inferno in 1/10, implying the former is the stronger of the two.[3]
Combat[]
After being infused with the Curse of Annihilation, Purgatorio became significantly stronger, mainly thanks to gaining abilities like Monstrous Strength and Immortality. His immortality keeps his Spiritual Core detached from his body. Due to this, he can heal from normal injuries without any issues. The only way to kill him through conventional means is to destroy his entire body without leaving a single speck behind. As long as an arm or even a finger remains, he will be able to regenerate. The only known exception is Senji Muramasa's finest katana: Myoujingiri Muramasa, a sword that can reach his core in the Ether, killing him with a single blow.[1]
In exchnage for his new powers, Purgatorio lost Houzouin Inshun's former godlike skill as a spear wielder.[1][2] At the start of the Shimosa Subcategory Singularity, Miyamoto Musashi claimed that she would never have had any hope of defeating Inshun, however, since Purgatorio no longer utilized his signature Suigetsu, Musashi gained an opportunity to take him down. The reason for this is that his former beautiful technique had been covered up beyond all hope of recognition by his newly-gained Monstrous Strength.[1] On the other hand, Inshun states that Purgatorio wastes a lot of his power in his strikes, leaving him vulnerable for counter attacks. Purgatorio relies on power that already exceeded his limits, failing to understand his own body. Although Purgatorio may have fared a bit better against an opponent with swords since that had been his focus as a Swordmaster, the rest was quite sloppy. He may had gained in one area, but he had lost much in others. Although his spear may have grown sharper, as a Lancer, he had grown weaker. Thus, Inshun is able to defeat him in his Interlude.[2]
During his first fight against Miyamoto Musashi and Ritsuka Fujimaru, Purgatorio displays an impenetrable defense and movements as quick as lightning. However, he ends up letting Musashi land a strike that he could have easily avoided. The reason for this is that he wanted to test his newfound Immortality. Musashi is angered by this, saying she can't accept one of her strongest blows was laughed off as a practice swing. During their rematch, Musashi faced him over and over inside her mind's eye, thinking about what she could do to defeat him. Out of the 32 duels she imagined, she died in 31 of them. He was strong, but she could still see a way to win. All she had to do was choose it. Out of the multiple factors that intervened, Musashi lists the the will of the heavens, Ritsuka Fujimaru's help, and the final decisive factor: the sword she borrowed, Myoujingiri Muramasa. With it, Musashi's Fifth Force was able to reach Purgatorio's Spiritual Core in the Ether, taking him down permanently.[1] However, Musashi would go on to later confess that even her couldn't have defeated Purgatorio if she hadn't borrowed that katana.[4]
Senji Muramasa is quick enough to not only dodge Lancer of Purgatorio's thrust, an amazing feat in itself, but then destroy his entire upper body with a single blow. At a glanze, it looked like he swung his sword the way an old man would wave a cane around, however, his speed and power were incredible. The reason for this is his Sword Trial Skill, which allows him to draw the full potential of a sword at cost of its self-destruction.[1]
Finally, as a Heroic Spirit Swordmaster, Purgatorio can use powerful Magecraft resembling a Reality Marble and what Lady Kannon uses. It creates a battlefield made out of corpses that consumes the Soul of loser after a fight.[1]
