The Library of AlexandriaWP (アレクサンドリア大図書館?) is an ancient library built in Egypt. While the surface building was destroyed, the second hidden building housing knowledge of magecraft remains in the modern day.
Characteristics[]
The Library of Alexandria had two buildings: the historically famous building collecting all worldly knowledge, and the submarine building collecting all the secret magecraft knowledge that can't go public. In this way, it can be called Atlas's version of the Spiritual Tomb of Albion.[1]
The city-sized ruins are located underwater near the city of AlexandriaWP, Egypt. It is hidden under an illusory false sea floor and contained within a giant dome. Inside the dome, the air still has mana from the Age of Gods.[1]
The key to the magical Library of Alexandria is the heart of Pharaoh Ptolemy, contained within his mummy. If the key is taken out of his mummy, access between the layers locks down.[1] There are four layers to the magical library. As long as the key is in its place, you can travel freely between the first and second layers, which are not very fortified. The third layer is the real core of the library, and the fourth layer is an even deeper forbidden realm that even current Atlas technology would struggle to reach.[1] The first layer is the outer city, the second layer is the library proper, the third layer contains forbidden documents, and the fourth layer is the server room which also contains Ptolemy's mummy. There are secret entrances across the library which can be used to access the various layers besides their main entrances, and also some secret entrances that connect to the outside.[2] The secret entrances were made for the construction and shut down when the library was finished, but one out in the Egyptian desert was rebuilt by Edelfelt graverobbers.[3][4] They are normal-looking caverns with space distortions inside,[3] which teleport the user to the library.[4]
The second layer, the library, resembles a forest of hexagonal crystal pillars that serve as both recording and browsing devices.[2]
The third layer also uses the second layer's crystal pillars as recording media, but here the pillars have grown roots, branches, and flowers for self-defense. Every pillar is protected by its independent decision-making ability, which can override decisions from the central command. As a defense mechanism, the pillars can use a Memory Weapon allowing them to create an imitation of Ionioi Hetairoi, desert and all, based on Ptolemy's memories. It can be disabled by attacking the flowers on the pillars.[3]
The library is protected by Atlas-made mechanical guardians that resemble various mythological creatures from nations surrounding Egypt, showing how Atlas's cultural sphere is not restricted to its own country.[2] One is a scorpion with a humanoid torso, resembling the Mesopotamian god PabilsaĝWP.[2] Others include a centaur with a bow and arrow, a panther with a snake head, a crocodile with a dog head, and an eagle with a lion head.[5]
The Throne of Heroes recorded Ptolemy and the Library of Alexandria as being one and the same, and so Ptolemy's Noble Phantasm Bibliotheca Basileus gives him total control of the library and its information and mechanisms.[6]
History[]
The secret library was created by Atlas as part of a deal with Pharaoh Ptolemy I Soter.[1] The true purpose of the library that Ptolemy created it for was to be a place where Alexander IV could read as much as he wanted, as he had always loved books but wasn't allowed to read as a child.[6]
Some generations ago, the Edelfelts rebuilt one of the secret entrances to the library in the Egyptian desert in order to plunder the library's secrets.[4][3]
In 2007, a joint team between Atlas and the Clock Tower went on an excavation of the library.[1] At the end of this incident, Pharaoh Ptolemy who had been summoned as a Servant locked off the library to prevent access for hundreds of years.[6]
