Magical Energy (魔力, Maryoku?) is a source of energy found naturally within magi and the World, acting as the source to actualize the Mysteries of magecraft.[1][2]
Characteristics[]
Referred to as the primordial animus and life itself, magical energy is the source that powers all forms of magecraft. Analogous to gasoline, it is an essential element for the invocation of spells.[1][2] There have been many names for magical energy depending on the culture.[2]
Magical energy is primarily classified by two types, mana and od, separated only by whether it comes from the atmosphere or from within human magi. They are essentially identical in terms of quality, but the world's mana vastly exceeds humanity's od.[1]
In the Holy Church, it is considered taboo to use the terminology preferred by magi due to the organization’s long-standing conflict with the Mage’s Association. Members of the Church therefore refer to magical energy as "holy energy".[3]
Magical energy can be absorbed from others. In Fuyuki City's Fifth Holy Grail War, Medea absorbed the od of civilians through the leylines to provide herself with an unlimited supply of magical energy. Another example is Gray, who uses the scythe form of her unique Mystic Code, Add, to absorb magical energy.[4]
Mana[]
Mana (マナ, Mana?), the meaning of which is approximately the same as that of Polynesian cultureWP, is the greater source of magical energy found in the atmosphere of the world.[1][2]
Mana is the "breath of the Planet filling the world and nature,"[1] produced by the World through a network of Leylines (龍脈, Ryū Myaku?, Dragon Vein) across the globe. There also exist alternate versions of leylines, such as the Divine-make Leylines (神造霊脈, Jinzō Rei Myaku?, God-made Spiritual Vein) of Olympus, a wireless network created and administrated solely by the Gods, capable of superior mana provision compared to regular leylines.
The density of mana on the planet is dependent on the age. Within the Age of Gods, the mana density is such that a modern human will die when exposed to it without a specialized Mystic Code to block out the mana.[5][6] The reason for that is because humanity has adapted to an environment where magical energy is vanishing, and their bodies can no longer withstand their original one now that they parted from the World of Magecraft.[7] As such, to people of the modern age, magical energy from the Age of the Gods is basically a poison,[8] and too much of it can damage internal organs.[9]
The mana within a given area is finite, with the three-kilometer cavern housing the Fuyuki Greater Holy Grail holding one thousand units. Similar to magi needing time to regenerate their od, the mana of an area will take a long time to replenish after it is depleted.[10]
Magi freely utilize the mana in the air for the purpose of spells that exceed their personal od, but the amount they can utilize at one time correlates to the capacity of their Magic Circuits.[1][2] If there is no available mana, they can only utilize small-scale spells with their own storage.[2] It is also possible for magi to interfere with leylines, such as the technique of the Native American tribe of the Protectors of the Land, which consists of having promising newborn's Magic Circuits forcibly linked to the land's leylines through a ritual requiring human sacrifice.[11] This connection can help to strengthen senses,[12] or convert the mana gushing from the leylines into od through one's Magic Circuits.[13] The major drawback of this method is that if the magus physically leaves the land, they will die. Karabo Frampton has been shown to be able to utilize his Black Keys to connect to and activate leylines by placing them at focal points.[14]
The Forest of Einnashe directly controls its atmosphere, so magi cannot use the mana from environment.[2] Satsuki Yumizuka's Reality Marble Depletion Garden rapidly depletes the mana in the area, acting as a natural enemy to magi and Elementals.[15] Within the World of Fate/EXTRA, worldwide Mana Depletion (魔力枯渇, Maryoku Kokatsu?) brings about the end of magecraft, many magi becoming Wizards.[16][17]
In the Spiritual Tomb of Albion lies the Great Magic Circuit (大魔術回路, Dai Majutsu Kairo?), otherwise known as Vein Corridor Od Vena (静脈回廊オドベナ, Jōmyaku Kairō Odobena?). It is Britain's leyline cavern.[18] Magic Circuits are fused with the earth here but cannot be harmed by the excavating magi, and so the excavations avoid them, forming various passages like corridors. This layer is inhabited by Magical Beasts, and the Magic Circuits are said to lead one to the Reverse Side of the World. It is unknown if the Magic Circuits are from the Dragon of Albion, or if they already existed as a part of the earth.[19]
Od[]
Od (オド, Odo?), from the concept of Odic forceWP, is the life force (生命力, Inochiryoku?) energy found within living organisms such as humans, animals and Magical Beasts. Once depleted, the Magic Circuits that are stored in the human soul will begin to replenish it. Od is produced as long as one lives, but the amount a person can store varies from individual to individual.
The difference between mana and od is their abundance. mana can be found almost anywhere and in great quantities, thus it is called the Greater Source (大源, Dai Minamoto?) by the magi.[20][21][22][23] As od is the energy inside humans and animals, it is much smaller in amount and is called the Lesser Source (小源, Shōgen?).[20][21][22]
Strictly speaking, mana and od are energy in its raw state, whereas magical energy is the name given to the energy once it is converted by the Magic Circuits.[22]
Mana can be taken in accordingly with the capacities of the Magic Circuits,[1][20] but the actual conversion process will take time.
Regarding nature interference magecraft mentioned before, at least for large-scale spells, activation requires the use of mana regardless of the amount of od that the magus has. In fact, it is common practice among the magi to start up their spells with od and then keep them running with mana. Only small-scale spells that do not interact with the environment directly are performed entirely with od, an example of which would be Reinforcement.[21]
Magical energy itself does not have any elemental attribute. However, once embedded into an object that does have said attribute (such as jewels) or that is under the influence of Nature Spirits, it will attune itself to the Elements in question until the moment that it is released.[21]
The magical energy itself is held only inside the body fundamentally and if released in the outer world, it will return to the life force and be scattered into the Greater Source. This has also been expressed as "Evaporation."[22] If someone has Magic Circuits and they are still operating, an individual's od will be regenerated even if is totally used up. However, without Magic Circuits, od will no longer be generated at all.[24]
For magi, their own bodies makes for first-rate catalysts.[25] For example, it has always been easy to turn human hair or eyes into raw material useful for magecraft: the purer the eye color, the better, and the longer the hair, the better.[26] Hair that has been cultivated and maintained over many years becomes an especially powerful and precious fuel and raw material.[25][26] Long hair can be used for many purposes, like an instant Reinforcement spell,[26] transcribe Magic Formulae,[25] making Familiars,[27][26] creating a Chain of Submission able to restrain a Phantasmal Species,[28] and amplifying a Mystic Code[29] among other things. The importance of long hair is especially important for women, who have strong magical power residing in their hair seen as the symbol of their magical powers[30][28] and as an extension and "copy" of the female magus.[26][28] Due to this, they use their hair as a secret weapon and trump card equivalent to Mystic Codes,[25][26][29] and ribbons used to tie them are suitable magical artifacts,[31][30] as holding the hair in place means holding the magical energy in place.[31] Even if men accumulate magical energy in their hair, it is not as effective as women.[32] Magical energy is also prone to merge with the fluids (such as blood or semen) of the magus, and these fluids are good at holding in magical energy for some time even after leaving the body. Because of this, by drinking a magus' blood, one can replenish one's magical energy. Magi with monetary problems have also been said to sell their bodily fluids, in which magical energy has been merged, to the Mage's Association.[22][33] And in ancient Egypt, there existed the practice of sewing one's eyelids together to prevent magical energy from escaping the body.[34]
QiWP (気, Ki?, localized as "Chi") is one of the culturally-specific names of od. Li Shuwen uses qi for his Sphere Boundary[35] and No Second Strike techniques.[36]
Od is connected not only to a person's physical condition, but also to the characteristics carried by inhuman blood.
The first situation is displayed when, eight years before the start of the story of Tsukihime, Shiki Nanaya's life force was stolen by the inverted SHIKI Tohno.[37] In order to keep the child Nanaya alive, Akiha Tohno gave him half of her own life force.[38] As a result, Shiki developed chronic anemiaWP [39] due to having half the life energy of an ordinary person.[38]
The second occurrence was with Akiha Tohno. Originally, she had less Tohno blood than her brother, as revealed by her father.[37] But because she gave half of her life force to Shiki, the sleeping Tohno blood demon awoke.[40] Under normal circumstances, she would be able to suppress it if she only had to worry about herself, but she carried the burden of two people.[40] Due to this, of all the energy she holds, she only uses half for herself. Shiki equates this to trying to move only with half of his body.[38]
Michael Roa Valdamjong (Remake), in SHIKI Tohno's (Remake) body, wields special Mystic Eyes with properties similar to Shiki Tohno's (Remake) Mystic Eyes of Death Perception which he uses in conjunction with a knife. While Roa believes them to be the same Mystic Eyes of Death Perception the Shiki because of the Lines and Points, they are significantly different. Such eyes allow him to see the "point that makes things live", and interact with them. The Mystic Eyes are limited to directly damaging or annihilating the "life force" of living beings, the "place that indicates the source of life" and the "part that keeps things alive". They do not kill outright by actualizing death, but instead inflict critical damage on someone's life force that leads to their death.
Known Magical Energy levels[]
There is some inconsistency between the various visual novels that make up the Nasuverse. In Fate/stay night, the average amount of od is 25 units of magical energy. However, in Tsukihime, the average amount of od is 40 units of magical energy.
- Average matured magus: 25 units of magical energy (Fate).
- Average matured magus: 40 units of magical energy (Tsukihime).
- Aoko Aozaki is capable of absurd feats of magecraft using just her od. An approximate comparison would be of a car traveling 1,000 kilometers with only one liter of gasoline.[2]
- Medea’s cost for a bolt of light is around three times Shirou's full capacity, and she can launch over ten at once in multiple volleys.[41]
- Ciel: 100 times the amount of a magus based on an average magus having 40, giving her over 4000.[2]
- Ciel/Remake: Said that if the average magus has 20, she has 5000, giving her 250 times the amount of a magus.[42]
- McDonell Trambelio Elrod: Said to have less than half as much magical energy as Ciel in the Remake at 2000, but has unparalleled magical energy regeneration.[42]
- Medusa’s Pegasus: 100 times the amount of a magus, so about 2500 units of magical energy.
- Rin Tohsaka: 20 times the amount of an average matured magus, so about 500 units of magical energy.[43] Maximum output is about 1000 units of magical energy.[10]
- Artoria Pendragon (with Shirou as Master): 1200~1300 units of magical energy.
- Saber’s consumption (with Shirou as Master):
- Sakura Matou: Normally, she should have about the same amount as Rin, but the Crest Worms in her body are constantly consuming her magical energy. In addition, the shards of the Lesser Holy Grail implanted in her corroded and consumed her Magic Circuits over the years, leaving the Crest Worms as her only way to magecraft.[45] When connected to the Holy Grail and Angra Mainyu, the magical energy inside her body is equivalent to 1,000,000,000,000 units of magical energy, already on the level of a Counter Guardian. However, her maximum output of this magical energy can only equal her original amount, approximately 1000 units of magical energy at a time.[10]
- Shirou Emiya: 25.[43]
- Shirou Emiya’s cost for:
- Reinforcement: 2 units of magical energy.
- Tracing: 5 units of magical energy.
- Shirou Emiya’s cost for:
- Waver Velvet: As Waver, he could produce about 20 units of magical energy. At the time he became Lord El-Melloi II, that increased to 70 plus 10 (similar to hidden savings thanks to magical artifacts he possesses and the rituals he uses).[43]
- Tiamat (Femme Fatale): 16,785 units of od (Suppressed). Tiamat releases from her body as much magical energy as a Hydrogen BombWP just by screaming. When she powers up, her od value is 11,010,303.[46][47]
- Tiamat (Unleashed): 900,360,230 units of od.[46]
- Tiamat (Draconic Corpus): 18,180,187+ units of od in the Underworld.[48]
Other Forms of Magical Energy[]
Aside from life force, whether from the Planet or one's self, there are many other forms that magical energy can take.[21] It can be known as spiritual power, willpower, vitality, survival instinct, dan t'ianWP in Chinese thinking, kundaliniWP in India, pranaWP, etc.[49] Some use their force of will, and there are some that use magecraft by paying a price other than themselves.[21] Replenishment of spiritual calories by consuming them as food can also give increased spiritual power to the soul, as can the desire to leave behind descendants, i.e. sexual activities.[49]
There is also significant increase in land's mana during festivals and holidays, with such charged distortions being a boon to a magus' craft, be it creative or destructive.[26] The Tower of LondonWP emits what the Clock Tower considers the "magical energy of the dead", which consists of the large amounts of mana seeping from the leylines and the od given off unintentionally by the tourists, with the "concept" of the dead at its core.[50]
Mana Crystal[]
Mana Crystals (マナの結晶, Mana no Kesshō?), also known as Ete Amorpha (血体格子, Chi-tai Kōshi?),[51] are crystals of magical energy created through human sacrifice. True Archer described them as resembling the mystic crystals used by jewel magi, but seeming several orders of magnitude more pure.[52]
Known to Greek witches,[53][51] a technique to create them was developed by the Galliasta family, using exchange in the form of a "primitive curse" to generate magical energy from human sacrifices, and consisting of a ritual that would take a month and require a transmutation Incantation of a three-day and night duration. Atrum Galliasta modernized and sped up the process, skipping the incantation process entirely, having the sacrifices placed in cylinders, liquefied, and then transferred into a crystal. It is more efficient with "pure" raw materials, so he used young girls as sacrifices.[53]
This system would later be improved and expanded to a far larger scale by the Scladio Family, able to use dozens of sacrifices simultaneously.[52]
Mana Prism[]
Mana Prisms (マナプリズム, Mana Purizumu?) are crystals created through concentrating mana.
Rare Prism[]
Rare Prisms (レアプリズム, Rea Purizumu?) are rare crystals created by concentrating mana under special circumstances.
Quantum Piece[]
Quantum Pieces (クォンタムピース, Ku~ontamu Pīsu?), abbreviated as QP, are a magical energy resource formed from the spacial magical occupancy value, the quantum of the Thaumaturgical Foundation.[54]
Due to the nature of their usage in the gameplay of Fate/Grand Order, QP is treated as the basic form of currency related to Servants, especially in comedic settings.

An essential element for invoking sorcery. Also known as the primordial animus, and life itself.
It is broadly divided into two types: the greater magical energy (mana), which is the breath of the planet filling the world and nature, and the lesser magical energy (od), which is possessed by living beings (humans).
As far as quality is concerned, they are both essentially identical. The only difference is that the amount of mana in the world far, far exceeds the amount of od.
Because mana is the magical energy of "that space" which fills the atmosphere, magi can use it freely.
…Of course, the amount that can be utilized directly corresponds to the capacity of the magus – which is to say, the number of magic circuits they have.

The source that powered all magecraft, analogous to gasoline.
There were many names for it. For example, the magical energy in the atmosphere was called Mana. The meaning of Mana was approximately the same as that in the Polynesian culture. Also, Ether was not a form of Magical Energy as it was something else.
The Magical Energy in this story included Mana and the Magical Energy generated by magi themselves.
The difference in magnitude between the Magical Energy that permeated the natural environment and the Magical Energy generated by an individual was so great, it was foolish to compare the two.
Since the atmosphere in the Engulfing Forest was under Einnashe's control, one could not utilize the Magical Energy of the environment. As a result, most magecraft could not be activated, a magus could only activate very small-scale spells that utilize an individual's internal storage.
As an aside, this thing called "an individual's Magical Energy" as used by Blue in a foolish yet clever manner. To use a simile, it was like driving a car for 1000 km on 1 L of gas.
Also, the capacity of Ciel was ridiculously large. If a regular magus' gas tank was 40, then Ciel's was more than 4000. She truly deserved the name Miss Glutton.
- ↑ Tsukihime -A piece of blue glass moon- - Midnight Rainbow route - Day 10: "Arc en Ciel II"

Yumizuka Satsuki's Last Arc. A reality marble.
Satsuki's powers blossomed after becoming a vampire, and this is her strongest attack. As the name "depletion" suggests, the magical energy in the deployed space is rapidly dissipated. Though it is similar to Akiha's Origami, the target of Depletion Garden is the world itself. Also, the depleted magical energy does not return to the user, Satsuki, but instead merely vanishes.
It is a field effect that could be considered the natural enemy of magi, who require magical energy to attack, and elementals, who require magical energy just to exist.
On the other hand, against organisms that are cut off from the world (for instance, humans, who don't use the magical energy in the atmosphere much at all) there will not be a pronounced effect.

Magic is activated when a magic formula is set into motion. For example, to light a fire with magic, one must contact a magic foundation engraved in the world and activate the magic formula for the phenomenon of “igniting a fire.”
To run a magic formula, one must first generate mystic energy. As previously mentioned, mystic energy is generated through the conversion of life force with magic circuits. Magic is classified into two major groups depending on whether the internal life force of the magus (Lesser Source = od) is converted into magic power, or whether the external life force of nature (Greater Source = mana) is taken in and converted into energy.
The generated mystic energy travels through the circuit, is sent to the magic foundation, and immediately activates the magic formula. In a narrow sense, the phenomenon that the magic formula starts can be called "magic".
Regardless of the Source of power, there is no difference in the activated formula. Whether one manually cranks a power generator or builds a windmill to drive the generator, the type of "power" generated will be the same (though the magnitude will differ).
•Magic powered by the Greater Source
The Greater Source is the life force of the planet, expressed as the life force of the atmosphere and other parts of nature. It is the life force that permeates the outer world.
The nature of it is the same as the Lesser Source, but the amount is orders of magnitude greater than that of the Lesser Source. However, the amount of the Greater Source that a magus can convert at one time is limited by one’s magic circuits, so no matter how much mana is available, it cannot be used without limit.
There is also a limit to the amount of energy someone can hold at once, so it is not possible to convert the Greater Source to mystic energy in advance and build up a massive reserve.
•Magic powered by the Lesser Source
The Lesser Source is the life force of the magus itself. It is something that exists in one’s inner world so there is no process needed to absorb it as with the Outer Source, and it is accordingly easy to handle. Many magi use their Lesser Source to generate mystic energy.
As one might assume from the name “life force,” overuse will have negative consequences on one’s body. Thus, it is typical for magi to gradually generate mystic energy and build it up inside the body. Mystic energy capacity differs by individual, and excellent magi can store large amounts of energy.
•Characteristics of Mystic Energy
Mystic energy is fundamentally stored only inside the body, and if released in the outer world it will return to life force and be dispersed into the Greater Source. This phenomenon is also expressed as "evaporation.” Mystic energy easily mixes with the fluids (such as blood or semen) of the magus, and these fluids are effective at holding mystic energy for a time even after leaving the body. Because of this, by drinking a magus' blood, one can replenish one's magic power. Magus with financial difficulties have been known to sell their energized bodily fluids to the Association.
- ↑ Fate/Grand Order - Babylonia: The Absolute Frontline in the War Against the Demonic Beasts - Chapter 4: Hardworking Citizens of Uruk

[] Tsukihime Dokuhon PlusPeriod - TSUKIHIME Dictionary: Magic Circuit [Term], p.188-189 Magic Circuit [Term]
The foundation for setting up Thaumaturgy. There are two types, but here it refers to the quality within a human body that makes a magus a magus.
Magic circuits are responsible for converting life force into magical energy, and for connecting to the underlying grand sorcery formula.
Basically, sorcery is a formula that causes nature interference by starting up and stabilizing a "rule already established in the world" with magical energy. Or to put it another way, the "rule" is a car, and the "magical energy" is the gasoline that makes it run.
In order to start up sorcery, three things are required:
the necessary amount of magical energy, a key (password/spell/code), and magic circuits to inject the magical energy into the "engine".
If we assume for a moment that magical energy is electricity, then magic circuits would be both the reactor that produces that electricity, as well as the pipelines for running the system.
Because vital activity is indispensable to the operation of this reactor, there is a common misconception that a magus' body = magic circuits. However, though quite rare, magic circuits that continue rotating on their own even after the practitioner's vital activity has stopped do exist.
The reason that an individual's magical energy (od) will be regenerated even if is totally used up is because the magic circuits are still operating. But on the other hand, without magic circuits, magical energy (od) will no longer be generated at all.
They are spread throughout the entire body as pseudo-nerves, and can basically be divided into cores, and pipes that connect these cores together. The pipes are similar to the synapses within the brain, constantly breaking off and reconnecting, but the cores never change.
Strictly speaking, these cores are the actual magic circuits.
They are considered to be a sort of internal organ, that will never increase or decrease in number. Of course, extracting and transplanting them is technically possible, but just like implanting an extra organ into a human body it should go without saying what will happen if you try it.
Magic circuits, once lost, will never return.
As for what magi actually use these magic circuits for, well, that's covered in a different story.

[] Fate/EXTRA - Li Shuwen (Assassin) Matrix [T] Class: Assassin
Master: Julius Harway
True Name: Li Shuwen
Noble Phantasm: No Second Strike
Keyword: A second strike isn't needed, Obfuscation
Strength: B, Defense: C, Agility: A, Magic: E, Luck: E
Obfuscation: -, Liuhe Quan: A+++, Concealment: AKewords 01 - No Second Strike
Li Shuwen's blows are almost always fatal, whether he throws a hard blow designed to kill or a simple feint to draw his opponent into an attack. A saying that has managed to survive the passing of years is, "For Li Shuwen, a second strike is needless." It is this saying from which his Noble Phantasm get its name.
To be accurate, this isn't a Noble Phantasm in the traditional sense of term. Rather, it is the ultimate expressions of the true power possible by mastering the martial arts. Li Shuwen is considered to be one of the very few to have gained total mastery over his style, and in fact was believed to have transcended the need for physical attacks, instead defeating his opponents by engulfing them in Chi.
There is much debate as to whether Li Shuwen actually uses his Chi to defeat his opponents, although the very few who have managed to survive a confrontation with him report suffering all of the effects associated with this attack, such as obscured senses, heightened state of paranoia, and the feeling that their nervous system was under almost unendurable strain.
02 - A second strike isn't needed
This was the second name given to one of the strongest practitioners of kung fu in Bajiquan history. Considered to be the ultimate master of Bajiquan, it is said that this person was able to take the life of his opponents with a single gentle touch.
03 - Obfuscation
A skill used to completely conceal one's presence.
Although this ability allows the user to become almost completely invisible, the sheer amount of magical energy required almost screams out that some form of thaumaturgy is being used. Should this person's opponent be a skilled magus, their presence would be noticeable in some extrasensory fashion.
There is a way to achieve this state of being without the use of any kind of magical aid and using only the abilities inherent within one's own physical form, but the level of concentration required is far beyond what humans are capable of.01 - 无二打
Skills Obfuscation [-]
While a common skill of all Servants of the Assassin Class, the level to which he is able to almost completely obscure his presence goes far above the limits normally associated with this ability.
Liuhe Quan [A+++]
A Chinese meditiative ideal. It is a belief that true mastery of martial arts comes not through training, but acceptance. As this technique is extremely difficult to understand, let alone master, it is only when achieving the rank A that one is thought to have actually begun to learn. Those with ranks exceeding A are considered true masters of the arts.
Concealment [A]
A technique in which one uses their Chi to blend in with the whole of their surroundings. For masters of the ability, it is possible for them to truly become one with the world and have their very forms seem to become invisible.
圏境[A]:

Li Shuwen (1864-1934)
A Chinese martial arts master from Yanshan County, Hebei-Cangzhou. One of the foremost practitioners of the style of the style known as Bajiquan, he was so powerful that many remarked that with him, "a second strike is needless as long a single blow will suffice."
In addition to his skills in hand-to-hand combat, he was also supremely talented in the use of the spear, so much so that he earned the name "Divine Spear Li." His occasional us of this weapon sometimes causes his opponents to mistakenly classify him as a Lancer. While this wouldn't normally be entirely incorrect, due to his Master's desire for a stealthy Servant capable of killing from the shadows, the traits more associated with the Assassin class have come to the fore.
On a final note, since his ability to become invisible is based on his natural abilities and not on any form of thaumaturgy, he is all but undetectable to the vast majority of magi or anyone dependent on magic.
02 - "Master of the Demonic Fist"
Li Shuwen, Master of the Demon Fist.
One of the few undisputed masters of martial arts, he maintains a delicate balance between the innate goodness and inherent evil found in all men. He fell victim to poison after earning the undying hatred of the countless families of those he had killed.
As a Servant, the balance he maintained in life has slipped slightly, but he still values rationality greatly. While he does not see much difference between good and evil, he will react with disgust and utter contempt for those who stray from rational thinking. And for those who allow what Christians call "The Seven Deadly Sins" to overwhelm their lives, he brings swift and inevitable death.
Although he was known as a deadly fighter throughout his life, in his later years he discovered that true power lay not in the strength of his fists, but in the strength of his convictions. He spent the remainder of his life following valor, not violence.
He freely acknowledge that in his current incarnation he is nothing more than a professional killer, but does so without bitterness or regret. And although he uses his power as Julius directs, could it be that...?01 - 人物背景:

[] Melty Blood Act Cadenza PS2 Manual - Dictionary: Tohno Shiki [Person's name], p.051 Shiki Tohno [Person's name]
The protagonist of Tsukihime. He is an extraordinarily ordinary young man who possesses the mystic eyes of death perception.
Eight years ago (nine years ago counting from Melty Blood), he received a massive chest wound in a traffic accident, but miraculously revived. After recovering, however, he developed chronic anemia, and so was sent to live with the Arima family by his father Makihisa.
He is the kind of character that makes both friends and enemies without realizing it.
Because he lived true to his promise with Aozaki Aoko to "become a man in the manner he thinks is right", he developed into a good and upright person. Perhaps because of his ability to see death all around him, he has a comparatively farsighted view of things. No matter what happens, he just takes it in stride. Que sera, sera.
A peculiar type of superhero who's basically benign, but if you approach him with the intent to cause him harm he'll destroy you.

[] Tsukihime Dokuhon PlusPeriod - TSUKIHIME Dictionary: Tohno Akiha [Person's name], p.185 Akiha Tohno [Person's name]
One of the heroines in Tsukihime. Shiki's younger sister, and the Tohno family's heir.
She has long black hair and a dignified posture, firm speech, and an unendearing personality. On top of that, her love of strict discipline can make her somewhat hard to get along with.
Perhaps it's because she doesn't think much of the way Shiki lived doing whatever he pleased for eight years, but she lashes out at him every chance she gets. Though she is basically straightforward and honest at her core, she is also unyielding and hates losing, so her true personality rarely gets a chance to shine.
She was one of the people involved in the accident eight years ago, after which her dormant Tohno blood was awakened. Though she would have been able to suppress it if she only had to worry about herself, she was carrying the burden of two people. As a result, she started being attacked by seizures nearly every night, and at Kohaku's suggestion began drinking blood to maintain her body.
…Of course, it was all just a scheme to push Akiha closer to her Tohno nature. Probably, even Akiha herself was aware of it on some level.
In one of the routes, she ended up inverting and demonstrating her power to its fullest extent. That dreadful form, with its fluttering vermilion hair, she may be equal to or surpass Arcueid.
Long ago, in the Tohno's country, there lived a female oni named Momiji. Though she is not their ancestor, maybe you could consider her the origin of Akiha?
Incidentally, Akiha is the character with the greatest number of individual sprites. It actually made the art director break down in tears. Not only were there uniform sprites and casual sprites, but sprites for Akiha when she was inverted as well.
Also, by some strange twist of fate, her roommate at school actually had the last name "Tsukihime".
She was the only heroine in Tsukihime that didn't get a happy ending, which apparently made a lot of fans mad. We got a ton of hate mail demanding that we do something about it, hahaha. I guess it worked, though, since we ended up writing a sequel to Akiha's ending for Kagetsu Tohya.
She is the student council vice president at the Asagami Academy for Girls, and seems to be quite popular.
…Of course, that popularity stems from equal parts reverence and terror.
In Kagetsu Tohya, the power relationship between her and Kohaku began to change, and in Melty Blood she was the victim of Kohaku's cheerful treachery. Also, though the Akiha in Melty Blood is pretty… energetic, she's normally a little more graceful than that.
She totally lacks the pride and thin skin characteristic of the super-rich, but her sense for how to use money is still grossly out of sync with normal people's.
When she told Sion to "rest a bit", in Akiha's head "a bit" meant either until Sion herself was sick of it, or until she was dead. It seems she's the type of person who's cold to strangers, but excessively soft toward those who have earned her favor. Ah, so that's why you let Kohaku toy with you as she pleases, Lady Akiha!

[] TYPE-MOON Manuscript - Lord El-Melloi II, p.036-039 Lord El-Melloi II
Overview
A magus working at the Clock Tower, the headquarters of the Mage’s Association.
One of the twelve Lords that rule and manage the Clock Tower, and the current head of the El-Melloi family. His skill in magecraft is mediocre, but his talent for teaching is recognized by everyone. Apparently.
His real name is Waver Velvet. Before being adopted into the El-Melloi family, he was no more than the eldest son of a fledgling magus. However, the Fourth Holy Grail War drastically changed his life, and before he realized it, he was suffering under the weight of the El-Melloi family’s mantle.
Appearance
British, male, in his thirties.
Though he possesses well-chiseled features, his constant expression of displeasure means he is rarely considered to be handsome.
185cm tall, 72kg. Black eyes and hair.
He wears his long hair straight, but it is kept quite well, so it is not too stifling or unkempt. He regularly smokes cigars, but only as a way of calming himself, with no interest in their flavor.
Personality
Lawful Neutral.
Extroverted, confident, proactive.
Has a wicked tongue, and hates people in general… or so he appears. In truth, just and upright.
Always speaks with a kind of disdainful condescension, but that doesn’t come from looking down on his interlocutors. Rather, it stems from a self-deprecating feeling of “compared to that, what am I even doing? I look like an idiot. I’m the biggest fool here!” Intelligent, possessing good judgment, and more than anything else having lost all sense of vanity, he is able to accurately accept himself as he is. As a result,
“Really, I wanted to complete it myself. But I knew it was impossible for me. The moment I realized that, I noticed that everyone around me was brimming with potential, but wasn’t making use of it. Is there any more infuriating way of life? It takes everything I have to protect what little pride I have left, so why do I have to worry so much about how those idiots live?!”
He often curses others in that fashion, but he also says things like, “I can’t bear to watch such a disgraceful waste. You, come over here!” as he regularly looks out for others.
Though he appears cynical and pessimistic, that is only because of how keenly aware he is of his own limits. At his heart, he believes in helping the weak and disciplining the strong. He does not like getting involved in affairs that appear irritating to deal with, but those same affairs tend to capture his attention and prevent him from focusing on other matters, so he often cooperates to resolve such situations, cursing the whole time. While his experiences have taught him to act courageously, he is still rather cowardly. That is the source of his predilection with making sure his preparations are perfect before making a move.
Manner of Talking
He uses the personal pronoun “watashi.”
For people he is meeting for the first time, or is not especially familiar with, he refers to them by “Last Name”-san or “Name”-kun. He drops the honorific when speaking to his own students. He refers to enemies by their full name with no honorific.
Reines is a special exception, where he refers to her as “kimi” (you) or “ojou-sama” (young lady) in an effort to avoid using her name as much as possible.
When requesting help from someone, he will refer to them as “lady,” “miss,” or “mister.”
He speaks like a young man who spends a great deal of time around old people. His sentences are long and meandering, like a university lecturer, and he often speaks with bitterness. He often adds qualifiers like “seems likely,” “that’s the situation,” or “perhaps that is the case.” giving the impression he is speaking of someone else’s concerns.
He speaks in a rather formal way, but often covers a wide array of topics, regularly diverging into talking about the newest things. Kind of like “for an old guy, you’ve got pretty young tastes!”
Most of his words are fairly strict, but when speaking with someone standing at a crossroads in their life, he becomes much more pleasant and agreeable, bolstering his reputation as a teacher. He is rarely excited by much, but behind closed doors, he becomes furious with his students’ shenanigans (like Flat’s).
“And now you’ve just made more work for me! I’m not even going to have time to sleep! Yes, I understand now, this is actually Hell, isn’t it? There are many depictions of Hell around the world, but one of those is surely where your students are running around causing problems at every waking moment!”
And of course, always around to watch him rant is the young lady Reines, wearing a smile as sweet as the worst medicine.
Abilities
Element: Earth.
Specialty: Counteraction, Leyline/Organic Adjustment, etc. Extremely plain.
The quality of his magic circuits is on the lower end of mediocre. As Waver, he could produce about 20 units of magical energy. At the time he became Lord El-Melloi, that increased to 70 plus 10 (similar to hidden savings thanks to magical artifacts he possesses and the rituals he uses).
※For comparison, Shirou could produce 25, and Rin could produce 500. The cutoff for a full-fledged magi is considered to be 100.
As you can see, he falls below the line for a full-fledged magus. Though his talent for adjustment lends to his abilities as a teacher, his talent in that field mostly stems from his character and personality.
Totally unsuited to combat. Though he has a number of mystic codes for self defense, he rarely carries them around.
Assistant: “That talisman in your pocket is the only one you have, Professor?! Don’t you have any other mystic codes?!”
El-Melloi: “No. They’d be useless against a real magus anyway. There’s no point carrying a thousand of them around to extend my life by a couple seconds. I’d suffocate under them before they ever got to me.”
A: “How have you survived so long then?!”
E: “That should be obvious. I don’t go anywhere that an talisman like this isn’t enough to protect me.”
Though he has learned techniques to use in combat, his output is so low that he tries to avoid using them. He doesn’t carry small weapons like handguns around either. His last line of defense is his cigars, which contain (about ten units of) magical energy.
“You thought I smoked these stupidly expensive things just to look sophisticated and eccentric?”
“Well, I guess that’s not really wrong.”
History
Eldest son of the Velvet family, who first started their study of magecraft at the beginning of the 1800s. He was considered a bit of a prodigy in his hometown.
Full of hope, he applied to enter the Clock Tower, and through his connections somehow managed to join the classroom of a certain Lord, Kayneth El-Melloi Archibald. Thus he entered a rather elite course.
However, with only two hundred years of history under their belt, the Velvet family were infants to the world of magecraft. From the perspective of the Lords, he was only fit to serve as a member of the magical working class.
Rebelling against the authority and old-fashioned structure of the Clock Tower, he joined the Fourth Holy Grail War to prove his talents. In the end, he returned as the only survivor from the war. Thus ended what he thought would be the greatest battle of his life. He returned with a quiet resolve to face the battle that was the life waiting for him.
However, that was not to be the battle of his life. What awaited him on his return would determine the course of the rest of his life. With Kayneth and Sola-Ui gone, the Archibald family began to decline. The other Lords wasted no time in pillaging the rights, mystic codes, personnel, and wealth of the fallen family. In the few months Waver spent preparing for his return from Japan, the Clock Tower had undergone a great upheaval.
Upon his return, the Archibald family was on the edge of collapse. Feeling partially responsible for Kayneth’s death, Waver did what he could to at least preserve the El-Melloi classroom, but it was all for nothing. The young and powerless Waver had no way of saving the dying El-Melloi name.
Even so, he managed to sustain the El-Melloi classroom for three years. Keeping the magi of renowned families from leaving was an impossible task, so instead he set his sights on the younger generation, those studying modern magecraft. With little interest in gathering power for himself, he had no aversions to the new agers. Convincing an old lecturer that had lost his place in the Clock Tower in a previous power struggle to take the podium once again, he created an emotional fulcrum for the new agers to operate around.
Starting as little more than a school club, they eventually rose to the level of the other classrooms of the Clock Tower, and before he realized it Waver himself had completed the necessary courses to teach the classroom in an official sense as a graduate student.
Though he had a terrible reputation among the ruling class, he had become a star of hope for the younger generation, his own distaste for that fact cementing his popularity among the students. (Occasionally, his underclassmen and friends had to fend off assassins sent by the ruling class and the Archibald family.)
Around the time the difficulties of his life had created a permanent wrinkle in his brow, he received an invitation to meet with a branch family of the Archibalds, the Archisorte family. Confused by the invitation, he was presented with Kayneth’s body that they had retrieved (with its destroyed Magic Crest), and a report on the details of the Fourth Holy Grail War. The young head of the Archisorte family, Reines, claimed to have watched his every move with admiration since he had returned to the Clock Tower. She was one of his fans, she claimed with a grin.
Waver, of course, didn’t believe her for an instant, and expected to be killed at any moment. From the perspective of the Archisorte family, Waver was the cause of their collapse. But he hadn’t stopped there. He had also stolen the rights to the El-Melloi classroom away from them, and even if it was in a bid to preserve it, ended up transforming it into something repulsive. Killing him would hardly be enough to satisfy their grudge.
Confirming that Waver was well aware of that, Reines presented him with an offer. If he accepted her terms, she would keep the details of the Fourth Holy Grail War a secret, and furthermore would guarantee his safety. In exchange, he had to agree to the following three terms:
- Repay all of the El-Melloi’s debt.
- Maintain the seat of Lord until Reines is old enough to take it herself.
- Restore Kayneth Archibald’s Magic Crest (the Archi Crest).
He understood how impossible those terms would be to fulfill, but also that if he refused, he would likely be killed immediately. He did feel he bore some responsibility, so he reluctantly accepted her offer.
W: “But what do you mean by that second condition? Isn’t it basically the same as paying back the debt?
R: “Ah, that. To put it simply, someone has to take the job of Lord until I’m old enough.”
Waver immediately felt suspicious.
W: “Wait. Are you saying—”
R: “Exactly. I’m sure dealing with the other Lords will be a pain, but I’ll leave it all to you, Lord El-Melloi II. Or should I just call you my beloved older brother?”
Waver immediately collapsed. Before he could so much as stand, she continued.
“Ah, I forgot one thing. There’s a fourth condition. You also have to be my private tutor. Having a brother not related to me by blood giving me private instruction is a great form of impropriety,” said the suspiciously grinning young girl.
Ever since then, Waver took up the mantle of Lord El-Melloi II (since he was Kayneth’s successor) in the Clock Tower. Such was the birth of one of the Clock Tower’s most charismatic lecturers, destitute yet holding the position of Lord and running his own classroom and department.
“It’s not like I’m asking you to work for the rest of your life. I just want your help until the rightful glory of the title of Lord has been restored. That sounds fair to me.”
“That’s the same as saying ‘work until you die,’ you demon.”

Repay all of the El-Melloi’s debt.
