Old Magi

Magi from across the Nasuverse.

Magus (魔術師, Majutsushi?, plural "Magi", officially translated as "Mage" in all properties but Melty Blood: Type Lumina) is the term for a practitioner of magecraft, the magical science, as opposed to a Magician, who is capable of bringing forth true miracles that are impossible to be reenacted at the current scientific stage.

In ancient times, the term magus was used for both the users of magecraft and Magic, but with the advancement of science that made past miracles possible and the decline of the overall power of magecraft, the differences between the two became clearer. In the modern age, there are only five Magicians left. A Magician, just like a magus, has a long life. If one uses life-prolonging magecraft, it wouldn't be impossible to live a few hundred or thousand years, either.

Magi frequently, but not necessarily, descend from old magical families, as affinity to magecraft is something transmitted through blood relations.[1]

More than just a name, the term "magus" defines a whole set of beliefs and lifestyle, the first of which is the desire to reach the "Truth". No matter the cost, they use all their assets and abilities to reach that goal, and any abilities gained in the process are a by-product. They hold no meaning except as a means to reach the Truth.

A magus also dedicates himself to the study and refinement of magecraft while driving himself apart of the values of common people in the process. He searches for the greater truths of the universe not to answer existential questions, but just for the sake of knowing.

Ideally, a magus would render his own self transparent while still retaining his ego. In reality, however, most magi, especially those of the Mage's Association, are often caught up in petty power struggles. On the other hand, those who openly deviate from the way of magi, such as Kiritsugu Emiya and Shirou Emiya, are perceived as heretics that do not deserve to be called a magus. They have no interest in the Truth and see magecraft as a useful tool. They are called Spellcasters.[2]

Characteristics[]

Depending on their craft, the appearance of magi may become distorted due to the chemicals with which they work or type of magecraft they practice. Rather than become ashamed over it as a mark of humiliation, it is normal for them to see it as a source of pride.[3]

Many magi look down on those like freelancers who use magecraft to earn a profit, believing it to be solely a field of research that should not be used in such a manner. Only those with more worldly experience or those practicing more controversial magecraft can look past the initial disdain and bewilderment other magi have for such people.[3]

It is possible for magi to obtain magical patents recognized by the Clock Tower, allowing them to obtain money from theories and rituals in the same manner as regular patents. The Tohsaka family earns tens of millions of yen annually from those that they own.[4]

Mindset[]

Most magi of long lineages do not find convenience in using modern technology, believing that the comparable magical tools they have possessed since long before the technology was invented will never be inferior. Compared to communication tools that are susceptible to spying and that will stop working with power outages, they feel their own apparatuses like Tokiomi Tohsaka's implements in place of fax machines and phones will remain superior due to not having such issues.[5] Others make the argument further that, while Science and magecraft sleep in the same bed, if the methods are too directly scientific, it gets farther away from the Mystery.[6]

Magi are usually unused to such technology, with Irisviel von Einzbern being hard-pressed to understand how to properly use a phone,[7] Jubstacheit von Einzbern fervently arguing against Kiritsugu Emiya having a telephone line and power generator installed at the Einzbern Castle,[8] and Rocco Belfeban believing social networks to be a form of magecraft and misunderstanding writing an email as being like sending a physical letter.[9]

People like Kirei Kotomine cannot truly understand this train of thought, believing that a fax machine that can be used by anyone is more convenient,[5] and Kiritsugu, a magus who frequently uses such technology, finds that the tendency of magi to ignore such technology as a legitimate threat, not understanding what a regular human can accomplish without magecraft, is a blind spot he can exploit in his work as a Magus Killer.[10]

Nevertheless, it's not necessarily the case for every magus: those of families that do not follow such traditions like Waver Velvet are easily capable of using them to the degree of any ordinary person,[11] and even a Clock Tower Lord like Inorai Valualeta Atroholm enjoys modern technology for her own pleasure, such as owning an iPodWP,[12] a personal computer,[13] and a cineplex.[14] In the same vein, the Archelot family head is into modern trends,[15] and the family has been a part of television media for years,[16] with one of their members even having been a world renowned idol singer. New Age magi, to compete against the old magi families who can rely on the Magic Circuits and Magic Crests built up by their ancestors, turn to modern science and the media to try and gain an advantage by doing something new.[15]

The Mage's Association does not base its principles on normal morality, but rather the preservation of the secrets of magecraft, the Concealment of Mystery (神秘の隠匿, Shinpi no Intoku?), one of the Mage's Association's three great principles,[17] and the first of its ten commandments.[18] What magi consider a crime is the popularization and the vulgarization of Mysteries, so while magi may commit horrendous crimes like murder, they generally will not be targeted so long as it does not become a threat to their secrecy.[17] While many people may perish in the Holy Grail War rituals, the Association only seeks to make sure the media is properly manipulated as to avoid letting it become public and having the Einzbern cover any monetary damage.[19]

However, perhaps out of pragmatism, the Association forbids the criminal use of magecraft.[20][21] It does not allow research that would harm society[22] or involve innocents.[23] If a magus pulls a civilian into a magical phenomenon, the Association dispatch assassins to kill that magus.[24]

One rule among magi is that it is taboo to kill your own students, because it goes against a magus' instinct of passing on their hopes to reach the Root on the next generation.[25] Since students and apprentices are like their own offspring and they are like their parents, magi fight fiercely to protect them, no matter what.[26][25]

When hunting those who have been given a Sealing Designation, their greatest priority is ensuring the safety of the results of the designated's research over all else. Competing with the Holy Church in their goal of wiping out all heretical knowledge, they seek most of all to obtain the Magic Crests of the designated as the most precious of a magus' work. In the case of Norikata Emiya and his successor Kiritsugu Emiya, the Association keeps the majority of the Magic Crest, and only through negotiations of the one selling it to them, Natalia Kaminski, is Kiritsugu able to inherit a minor portion.

Families[]

Some magus families will develop branch families over time. Among the Clock Tower families, the main family name sometimes will be bestowed upon a branch family member as a middle name to indicate being directly under their care.[27]

The magi of Yggdmillennia take on "Yggdmillennia" as their last name, while their former family name is taken as their middle name.[28] The Barthomeloi family puts their family name before their given name, similar to Eastern name orderWP.[29] Within Atlas, the family name of a magus is used as their middle name, while the last name is a chosen name or title.[30]

Classifications[]

- Is the term used to refer to users of Astrology. Flueger is one of them.[31]
— A type of magus originating in Celtic cultures.[32]
  • Faker (複製者, Fukuseisha?) - Faker is used as a term for Shirou Emiya and Archer for their usage of Gradation Air. Rin Tohsaka uses it as a regular term[33], while Gilgamesh uses it as a term of derision. Faker is also a Servant class, but it has no known connection to this terminology.
  • Houjutsushi (法術師, Hōjutsushi?) - Those who exorcise Spirits through SūtraWP, prayers and faith. The ones who achieved true enlightenment can draw upon the power of supernatural entities to perform miracles, but those with insufficient training have to fill the gap by adding their own power, just like the Western magi do. In Japan, there is a very secretive organization of Houjutsushi. Currently none of the monks of Ryuudou Temple are Houjutsushi, but there were a small number of them in the past.
  • Shaman (呪術師, Jujutsushi?) - The practitioners of Curse Arts, through similar in concept they are seen as a different kind from the regular magus. Users include the Fujou clan in the world of Kara no Kyoukai, Alice Kuonji, and, at first, Ayaka Sajyou.
- The name given to those who use magecraft without following the way of the magus, such as Kiritsugu Emiya and Flueger who treated magecraft as just a tool. Usually, their general skill with magecraft is low, but it is not uncommon for them to be highly proficient in a single field that they choose to specialize at. Also includes magi who lack formal training such as Shirou Emiya and Sakura Matou.
  • Spiritual Doctor (霊媒医師, Reibai Ishi?) - A magus that uses Spiritual Invocation to perform medical operations, one who heals not through the flesh, but through the soul. Can also be found among the members of the Church, thus hinting that these procedures are not completely seen as magecraft. Kirei Kotomine was an excellent Spiritual Doctor who was capable of removing Command Spells from a Master without damaging his nervous system.
  • Tuner (調律師, Chōritsu-shi?) - The term used for practitioners of Tuning Magecraft, a rare type of magus within the Clock Tower that are able to help with Magic Crests. They resonate with the natural wavelength of the Crest, better matching it with the wavelength of the host. Due to the Crest being akin to a living being, its natural wavelength differs from the magus, so syncing the two increases the effectiveness.
- The new class of magus in the world of Fate/EXTRA. Also called Spiritron Hacker (霊子ハッカー, Ryōshi Hakkā?) they are A-class Hackers that, compared to average Hackers, possess special abilities and can dive into the cyber world at a Soul level.
  • Witch (魔女, Majo?) — The practitioners of Witchcraft and a type of supernatural being tied to the First Magic.

Magi Bloodlines[]

Animusphere[]

The Animusphere (アニムスフィア, Animusufia?) family is one of the Twelve Lord families of the Clock Tower, one of the top ten families and are responsible for developing the Department of Astromancy and leading its Faculty. They have multiple branch houses, with the Fellows and Fargo families counted among them. The Animuspheres don't reside in cities, primarily constructing their domains in the mountains and highlands to observe the heavens.[34][35] They rarely come down unless they need to.[36][34]

The Animusphere's Astromancy magecraft specializes around predicting the future and observing the planet. Their family magecraft is dependent on the ambient Mana to fuel it, as revealed in the Atlantic Lostbelt with Kirschtaria Wodime.[37]

Known Members
Marisbury Animusphere (Former Head)
Olga Marie Animusphere (Current Head)

Aozaki[]

The Aozaki (蒼崎, Aozaki?) is the family who administers the greatest Spiritual Land in Japan. For magi of the Clock Tower, this name is a synonym for "trouble". Despite its age, it is not a renowned lineage. A bloodline with a history worth a total of six generations, the head of the third generation was a genius that discovered a path to the Root under his land. After creating the Fifth Magic, however, he sealed this path and decided to wait for someone who had the potential to comprehend the Root. He was the Fifth Magician until he passed on the Fifth Magic to his successor, and was a "magus infinitely close to being a Magician" afterwards until his death. By using this path, the successive heads have a high chance of inheriting the Fifth Magic, but going further into touching the Root is forbidden.[38]

The family head during most stories is Aoko Aozaki.

In the present generation, the family had the misfortune of having siblings disputing over the position of family head, a tragedy for any clan of magi. The outcome of the conflict was that the younger of the two sisters, Aoko, emerged victorious and became a Magician. At a point of time, both sisters were part of the Mage's Association but eventually they withdrew from it. Aoko left on a whim and became a Freelancer. Meanwhile, the older sister, Touko Aozaki, ran away after receiving a Sealing Designation after realizing that if she remained with the Association she would never be able to leave later, despite the great chance of her reaching the highest levels of the place.

The Aozaki family never had a history of producing heirs with many Magic Circuits and the numbers were decreasing even more with the passing of generations. By the time of the fifth generation, there were almost no Magic Circuits left. Many though that was the end for the Aozaki lineage, but Touko of the sixth generation surprisingly turned out to be a prodigy with 20 Magic Circuits.

About the time of the Fifth Holy Grail War, Touko was still hiding herself from the Association, while Aoko was touring around the country without a care in the world.[38]

While Touko is a very versatile magus, Aoko is good at nothing but destruction, being a user of the Fifth Magic, "Magic Blue".[38]

They are descendants of the soot witches (煤の魔女, Susu no Majo?) that sprang up in the shadow of the Industrial Revolution.[39]

The head of the Archelots is famous among magi who are into modern trends.[15] The Archelots have been involved with television media for a while now.[16] Before the current head took over, the Archelots were involved in the military.[40]

In the 19th century, the Archelots helped Henry Jekyll develop his famous elixir which turned him into Mr. Hyde.[41]

Crudelis[]

The Crudelis (クルドリス, Kurudorisu?) family is an Alchemist clan a part of Atlas Academy, being one of the Six Sources of Atlas equivalent to the Lords of the Clock Tower. The Crudelis family's magecraft uses Alchemy to make bone Familiars and bone constructs, being directly compared to how the Eltnam family makes weapons out of their nerves.[43]

The Crudelis were involved in the creation of Ergo, supplying the flesh of a God for him to devour. As Atlas seeks to prevent the end of the world, Lord El-Melloi II believes that the Crudelis' motive for creating Ergo was to prevent whatever disaster they foresaw.[44]

Dioland[]

The Dioland (ディオランド, Diorando?) are a magus family that specialize in puppet making, and were involved in United States politics since the country's founding.

Among their members was Assassin's Master in the Third Fuyuki Holy Grail War, who recorded mystic memories through the puppets he used in the War, and transmitted them to his family, even to distant relations. Eventually, Faldeus’ grandfather joined hands with United States politicians and military leaders, and developed a plan to hold a Holy Grail War on their own land within several centuries. When Faldeus' father inherited the project, Francesca proposed cultivating a stolen portion of the Fuyuki Holy Grail, which allowed their Holy Grail War to occur in less than a century.[45] Two known members have participated in a Holy Grail War.

Escardos[]

The Escardos (エスカルドス, Esukarudosu?) is a particularly old lineage even within the Mediterranean Basin. It was rumored to have been active centuries following the dawn of the Common Era, alongside the Magician Kischur Zelretch Schweinorg. No one at the Clock Tower believed it, nor did the descendants themselves—after all, although their family was old, they hadn't produced any worthwhile results. Even their Magic Crest had only age to recommend it. The greater portion of spells was indecipherable, even to the heirs themselves. The Magic Crest did, however, contain advanced life preservation capabilities so they managed to just barely cling to their dignity as an old family.[48]

Mocked by the Clock Tower as "moldering antiques" their only wish was for their Magic Circuits to develop. While their Magic Circuits remained few down the generations, their Magic Crest had yet to show signs of reaching the end of its lifespan. The Escardos family found this preferable to dwindling like the Makiri and they worked hard to shore up their footing as magi to avoid that fate—even if other magi laughed at their wasted effort.[48]

After a few centuries of that, an "anomaly," Flat Escardos, was born into the Escardos family. He had Magic Circuits unparalleled within his lineage, genius Magical Energy control, and the originality to combine spells from the past into a unique new magecraft. He was believed to have been the ideal heir, but as his talents began to bud, it became clear that he had entirely lacked the "mental attitude" that could be called a magus' most important attribute.[48] Though known only to Zelretch and Van-Fem, Flat is the result of the 1,800 year old dream of the Escardos family.[49]

Forvedge[]

The Forvedge (フォルヴェッジ, Foruvejji?) are a family from Germany that is in decline.[36][51] They specialize in Spiritual Evocation, specifically the summoning of Animal Spirits. Their great manor, which would have been cared for by maids three generations ago, is now being cleaned by low-level spirits summoned by Mr. Forvedge's wife, but this does not protect the house itself from decay, as it has begun to collapse in places, a shell of its former glory.[52]

In the world of Fate/Apocrypha they joined the Yggdmillennia, while in the world of Fate/stay night the heir Fiore ran away from home and her younger brother Caules became heir instead.

Fraga[]

The Fraga (フラガ, Furaga?), a family with a history that extends back to the Age of Gods. Due to the faithful servitude they showed to the ancient deities in the past, the clan was rewarded with the knowledge of mystic runes and rights over the Noble Phantasm Fragarach. From the Magi's standards they are supposed to be the top-elite, but for some reason decided to remain isolated in a small coastline village. By bloodline alone, they should have been seen as high class, but in truth possess neither money nor fame. Instead, they just live secretly while passing down their mystical knowledge to their descendants, one child in the family per generation.[53]

They possess the Sorcery Trait God's Holder: the remains of a Mystery of the Age of Gods in the form of a virus. Not an hereditary trait carried in the genes, but rather a pathogen that has been transmitted throughout the generations. Allows the recreation and use of the Noble Phantasm Fragarach.[53]

The parents of Bazett were against her entrance into the Association.[53]

Known Members

Frain[]

The Frain (フレイン, Furein?), are a family quite well known in the field of doll engineering. It is traditional for the children of the house to be left nursed by Golems from the moment of birth, and until they reach the age when the family Magic Crest can be transferred to them, their parents practically never leave the workshop to see them. It was the policy of the Frain family to be raised and not give any love from the beginning. The Golems have complete responsibility even for their education. As such, every child of the clan becomes very familiar with Golems. The acts and speech of these dolls modelled after human beings—the way they continue to work day and night—becomes what is common sense to them. Having been raised on such an eccentric upbringing, they become magi for whom Golems rather than other humans are the norm. They may have forgotten even the faces of their own parents, but they remember the form of every single Golem who has cared for them.[54]

Fujimiya[]

The Fujimiya (藤宮, Fujimiya?) family are a magus bloodline from Japan whose magecraft specializes in controlling water, allowing them to channel their mana into liquids and control them like mist.[55]

The previous family head, Tsukumo Fujimiya's mother, had been summoned to help repurpose magecraft weapons for World War IIWP, but she refused. This caused her whole family to get eliminated, leaving only Tsukumo as the sole survivor, as she had been away at the time. Her dad, who had been away for the war, died during his duties, but it is unknown if the Imperial Japanese Army had anything to do with it.[56] Tsukumo is the head of the Fujimiya family, who goes down a path of constant decline with each generation. Through the connections of her predecessors, Tsukumo managed to obtain an invitation to the Holy Grail War from the Holy Church.[55]

Tsukumo's son, Kanata's father, didn't inherit her magecraft, and thus the Fujimiya's lineage of magi ended with Tsukumo.[56] However, Tsukumo's grandchildren, Kanata Akagi and his younger sister, are capable of using magecraft, though Kanata is a mediocre magus who can merely decrease the speed of any object he touches, while his sister who apparently had potential and talent, separated herself from their family and became a freelancing magus.[57]

Galliasta[]

The Galliasta (ガリアスタ, Gariasuta?) are an old bloodline from the Middle East, only recently aligned with the Clock Tower. Their magecraft steps right into the field of Curses, so they are a rather troublesome opponent to deal with. They used that magecraft to force cooperation from nearby organizations, securing the rights to oil drilling operations. As far as influence in mundane affairs is concerned, they're in the lead even among members of the Clock Tower.[58]

If you want it, then take it. If there's a blade in your hand, then swing. That line of thinking is how the Galliasta family had risen to prominence. The successor to the family is decided by pitting siblings against each other in a number of trials meant to curry political power. Atrum Galliasta, the current owner of the Galliasta Magic Crest, was the one who brought their family into the Clock Tower. Seeing magecraft that was considered old and outdated, he instead saw profit and potential.[59]

Glascheit[]

The Glascheit (グラシュエート, Gurashuēto?) family is a magus family specializing in the use of Beast Magecraft. Magecraft that borrows the abilities of animals exists all over the world, but the Glascheit family's strain of magecraft is rather eccentric.[60][61]

Known Members
Svin Glascheit

Goodfellow[]

The Goodfellow (グッドフェロー, Guddoferō?) are a magus family that specializes in investigating magic ruins, and has done so for seven to ten generations as external consigners of the Church. Although they were explorers in name only, it distinguished them from the normal world of grave robbers, however in reality there wasn’t really much of a big difference between them.

In particular, the father of Norma Goodfellow had also associated with many people who were slightly disconnected from the path of righteousness whether they were in either the Mage's Association or the Holy Church.[62]

Harwey[]

The Harwey (ハーウェイ, Hāwei?) are a magus family from the world of Fate/EXTRA. The family owns approximately sixty percent of the real world, whether this is through land ownership, monetary wealth or political influence is unclear. Regardless, the Harwey Conglomerate is a powerful organization, possessing both great influence and its own team of assassins with which to do away with opposition.

The heir to the family, Leonardo B. Harwey, was conceived between the former Harwey head and Leo's mother Alicia. While Leo is the younger brother of Julius B. Harwey, Julius is an illegitimate son, and after being harshly tested as a child, was discarded as a potential heir. Determining the Holy Grail to be a threat to their regime, the Harweys sent both brothers to the moon in order to claim it: Julius with the purpose of eliminating those that would oppose Leo, and Leo to take the Grail for the group.

Icecolle[]

The Icecolle (アイスコル, Aisukoru?) family, were a fairly old bloodline of practitioners of the dark arts. The Icecolle were forced on the run by the devastating witch hunts of the Middle Ages. They escaped from western Europe all the way to Siberia, they lost the Thaumaturgical Foundation of their magecraft and eventually fell into decline. Celenike was the first child to be born of the decaying bloodline in a long time.[52]

Known Members

Iselma[]

The Iselma (イゼルマ, Izeruma?) family has pursued the creation of 'the most beautiful person' for generations as their path to 「 」. In pursuit of "beauty", the Iselma family has been stated to create a generations of "Princess of Gold and Silver" that embodied the success of their research during that era. This is seen where they would traditionally have an unveiling party to show off the two to the other magi of the Mage's Association.

They are dependent on Lord Valualeta of the Valualeta family, of which Iselma is a branch family.

Isemi[]

The Isemi (伊勢三, Isemi?) family are a group of magi seated in the western part of Tokyo.[64]

Their stronghold is on the deep green summit of the Okutama mountain range, but they own several facilities, which focus on medical studies, in the downtown area too. As a magi family it's rare for them to achieve adaption and conformity to a certain degree for modern science. Although one could say they are compensating themselves with modern science as their Magic Circuit lineage has been losing it's power it once had.[64]

The family head, Shizuri Isemi, participates in the First Tokyo Holy Grail War as the Master of Rider, using Nefertari's necklace as a Catalyst, much to Rider's fury, as he is under the impression that the tomb of his most beloved wife was broken in and the necklace was stolen just to summon him.[65]

Eventually, the family dies when Assassin spreads her poison throughout the base beneath the Okutama mountains. The only survivor is a boy named Aro Isemi, who has been in a hospital, he is found by Manaka Sajyou and implanted with a Beast. Being forcefully kept alive, he eventually becomes the Master of Rider during the Second Holy Grail War, a week after the summoning he dies due to the summoning exhausting his life. He uses his Command Spells to incarnate Rider and dies smiling.

Ishtario[]

The Ishtario (イシュタリオ, Ishutario?) family is an Alchemist clan a part of the Atlas Institute, being one of the Six Sources of Atlas equivalent to the Lords of the Clock Tower. The Ishtario magecraft is called Moleculeface (モレクルフェイス, Morekurufeisu?), the manipulation of the skin.[66] One of it's members, Giuseppe, excels in heating up his skin to melt things. Quart, another member, can paint surfaces just by waving his hand over them, by manipulating the color, viscosity, transparency, and durability of his skin. Gray speculates that his multicolored hair is also an extension of this, since hair, skin, and nails are part of the same system.[67] Quart also excels in using his skin to dissolve objects, like touching a wall to make it lose rigidity like a block of sugar soaked in water.

Istari[]

The Istari (イスタリ, Isutari?) were a family well-noted for their Alchemy. In the family, the first principle they are taught is "Magecraft is as strong as what occurs in the body."[68]

Originally, the current head of the Istari Family and his wife held high hopes for their firstborn son, Heine, to succeed due to his immense talent and skill as a magus. However, he later caused a scandal within the Clock Tower due to him abandoning his family, titles, inheritances, Magic Crest and position within the Clock Tower to join the Holy Church.

This in turn caused his parents to resort to implant their Magic Crest into their second child, Rosalind, at an incredibly young age that could potentially damage her body. Hearing about this, Heine returned in order to save his sister. However, by the time he returned to the family to retake the Magic Crest, his parents had already implanted the majority of the Magic Crest into her body and had damaged her internally, halving her overall lifespan.

Kuruoka[]

The Kuruoka (繰丘, Kuruoka?) are a magus family from eastern Asia associated with the government organization of America that is responsible for the True and False Holy Grail Wars of Snowfield. They acquired some of the mechanics behind the Holy Grail War and part of Zouken Matou's system of entomancy. They began to adapt it to their own use with the goal of developing a new way to modify the flesh with even smaller bugs, after much trial and error, they came of with pseudo-entomancy in the form of magically-modified bacteria meant to be instilled within a young magus to amplify their Magic Circuits as they grow.[70]

In the past, searching for a way to beat the Makiri's entomancy Magecraft, Yuukaku Kuruoka collected some microorganisms near some ruins in South America, surprised to find them so mystically compatible with humans. Unsure of whether they were a remnant of evolution that took place in the Age of Gods or if those microorganisms had a completely different origin from normal Earth species, Yuukaku was unable to develop them from scratch but did find a way to modify them and adapt them to his family's Magecraft. He then caused the microorganisms he'd modified using Magecraft to enter into a symbiotic relationship with his daughter Tsubaki Kuruoka's Magic Circuits.[71]

Lehrman[]

The Lehrman (レーマン, Rēman?) are a distiguished magi family that specialize in Jewel Magecraft and Mystic Eyes, more specifically, their Magecraft allows them to use a specific cut of gemstones to create artificial Mystic Eyes for their own use, even reproduce Noble Colored Mystic Eyes to a degree. Implanting a foreign object into the human body will trigger rejection, so there are generations of bodily and brain modification in order to allow Yvette L. Lehrman to handle it.[72]

Due to the family specializing in the creation of artificial Mystic Eyes, they are regular attendees of the Mystic Eyes auction of the Rail Zeppelin.[51]

Lusendra[]

The Lusendra (ルセンドラ, Rusendora?) family are a clan of magi specializing in Reinforcement Magecraft, originating from the far north, they are said to have discarded even the concept of humanity.[73][47] They determined that one of their end goals was to replicate an allegedly extinct Phantasmal Species from Japan, the Oni, with their own flesh and blood, and spent the past 1000 years modifying their own bodies and Magic Circuits.[74]

With a special form of Reinforcement Magecraft passed down in the family, they repurpose their skeleton, each muscle fiber, each nerve, each lymph duct, and each capillary vessel to pass as a makeshift Magic Circuit. Their final destination is defined by the contradiction of making the already lost past reach the distant future. To take hold of, understand, or rewrite what is lost with the progress of the current form of Human Order, many magi keep the engine of their bloodlines running.[74]

The Lusendra lineage has been in rapid degradation in recent years, not because they've been getting any less Mystery, but simply because they tried too hard. They devoured everything they could to grow closer to the phantasmagoria of the Oni, or to live life the way they did. The previous family head, the most powerful in their history, devoured man and fiend alike, sometimes even Vampires, and lastly, in an attempt to devour a God, he headed to Japan, where the God Possessor clans are. And there he randomly came across the real deal, which means to say he was slaughtered by a one-eyed man with thick Oni blood in his veins.[74]

They lost most of their Magic Crest and then had to deal with the heavy consequences of their quest for "sacrifices to devour" continuously making larger amounts of new enemies for them, the only options left for them were to disappear into obscurity or to be instantly ruined by an enemy attack. That's when Doris, the only one who hadn't given up yet, was visited by Francesca Prelati and invited to the Snowfield Holy Grail War.[74]

Meluastea[]

The Meluastea (メルアステア, Meruasutea?, Meluastella) family is one of the Twelve Lord families of the Clock Tower, that is in charge of the Neutral Faction in the Clock Tower. They are in charge of two Departments after taking possession of the Department of Mineralogy from the El-Melloi family in the confusion following Kayneth El-Melloi Archibald's death. The current head is Lord Karmaglyph Meluastea Deluc.

Their bloodline's origins lie in the Library of AlexandriaWP (the historical one, not the surviving Magecraft branch).[75]

The Meluastea's Department of Archaeology has always been in constant poverty for its entire history, but its sheer authority has always kept the Meluastea family at the very top of the Neutral Faction even without the money to back it up.[67] However, the Department has been on the rise ever since Karmaglyph became Lord.[76]

While the Meluasteas were famous for being quite the softies despite being Lords, Karmaglyph’s actions are quite ambitious. Money was always necessary for Archaeology, but come the 20th century, money suddenly became exponentially more needed by everyone. The Meluasteas were the leaders of the Neutral Faction, but the Eleventh Department was always among the weakest. Their leadership status was symbolic and held together by tradition. Karmaglyph knew that and this was why he was so invested in solidifying his position.[77]

A large part of the family's debt is owed to Melvin Weins' mother.[77]

Their name is similar to Astea (アステア, Asutea?), a Clock Tower Lord who lived in the 16th century.[78] Any connection between Astea and the Meluastea is currently unknown.

Musik[]

Musik Crest

Musik family's crest.

The Musik (ムジーク, Mujīku?) are an Alchemist family of ancient Einzbern disciples,[79] who were once known to had rivaled the Einzbern in terms of skills in Alchemy. In the World of Fate/Apocrypha, their Thaumaturgical blood had already been in decay, and so the Musik family was absorbed into the Yggdmillennia clan before the Great Holy Grail War.

Despite their insular and unsociable nature, the Einzbern reluctantly formed relationship with other magi, which the Musik family took advantage of in order to obtain a portion of their Homunculi craft. However, what the Einzberns taught was merely the equivalent of giving a toy to a child, so it was not much of a problem for them. While Musik family concealed the fact that they were part of the Yggdmillennia clan, the Einzberns had already known the truth.[80]

Norwich[]

The Norwich (ノーリッジ, Nōrijji?) are known as the "Daddy-Long-Legs family of the Clock Tower," referring to the Daddy-Long-LegsWP practice of anonymous benefactors providing scholarships for orphaned children. Having been fortunate with money for generations, the Norwich family has a tradition of adopting people of interest, causing the name to spread throughout the Clock Tower. If any of their adoptees cut ties with them afterward, the Norwich family has a strict "it's not worth pursuing those who flee" policy.

The Norwich family were also the benefactors of the Department of Modern Magecraft Theory at the Clock Tower when it was first established, and so the department now bears their name. While the current head of Norwich has taken an interest in Lord El-Melloi II, due to their complex political situation, Reines has decided it is best for them to keep their distance.[81]

It's unknown what kind of relationship, if any, Mrs. Norwich has with the family.

In the universe of Fate/Apocrypha, Deimlet Pentel and Cabik Pentel were a well known combat specialists duo and were known throughout the world for their strength, having been described as monsters specialized in combat who remove the opposition without mercy. Their reputation and strength being infamous enough for them to be assigned as members of the Red Faction and act as Masters.

In other timelines, including The Case Files of Lord El-Melloi II and Fate/strange Fake, two sisters of the family, Nazica Pentel and Radia Pentel, are students of Lord El-Melloi II and are known to be up and coming magi of the Clock Tower who would reach the Rank of "Brand" or "Pride" within a short amount of time.

Being one of the elite magus families in the east, the Reiroukan family maintain many connections with politicians, leaders and businessmen causing them to have a lot of pull with local governments. They are several levels higher than the Sajyou family. Aritoshi Reiroukan and Hiroki Sajyou were old acquaintances, but Misaya Reiroukan did not meet Ayaka Sajyou until after she became a Master in the Tokyo Holy Grail War.[84]

Aritoshi was the Master of Caster during the First Tokyo Holy Grail War, having been betrayed by Caster, he dies channeling suppression magecraft on his daughter to hold back her curse that was placed by Caster and activated by Manaka Sajyou. Misaya herself then becomes the Master of Lancer 8 years later during the Second Tokyo Holy Grail War.

Riedenflaus[]

The Riedenflaus (ライデンフロース, Raidenfurōsu?) are a family associated with the Clock Tower, from the Department of Spiritual Evocation. They are low in status compared with the elite of the Mage's Association, and their history spans only a few centuries. However, in the world of Fate/Requiem their longtime occupation of the seat at the foot of the Aristocratists' table was enough to grant them entry to Mosaic City.[85]

The Riedenflaus are the promoters of the Holy Grail Tournament held in Akihabara, meaning they are actively and brazenly flouting the first precept of the Mage's Association: the Concealment of Mystery. The family's magecraft revolves around the creation of Homunculi.[85]

Rum[]

The Rum (ラム, Ramu?) magus family is another clan of magi affiliated with the Clock Tower and the Mage's Association, with the whole family being full of book lovers that have a great amount of original copies of books printed back in Alexandre Dumas' time[86] and there is a rumor that Jean Rum, a member of the family, searched for Ivan the Terrible's library.[87]

In the universe of Fate/Apocrypha, one of its members, Jean Rum, would garner a reputation as a powerful and skilled magus for hire. With her prowess and skill in combat having been infamous enough for her to be chosen by the Clock Tower to participate in the Great Holy Grail War as a Master of Red.

In other timelines, including the The Case Files of Lord El-Melloi II and Fate/strange Fake, another member of the Clan, Org Rum, is a student of Lord El-Melloi II and is well known as one of the Clock Tower's up and coming magi that would successfully reach the rank of "Brand" or "Pride" within a short amount of time.

Sajyou[]

At some point in the past, the head of the family Hiroki marries his wife (who is from an English background), who then gives birth to his daughters Manaka and Ayaka. His wife soon dies some time after creating her botanical garden, "Garden", due to both having a weak constitution and additional leftover strain from Ayaka's birth.

The family participated in the First Holy Grail War with Manaka as the Master of Saber, at the end of the war both Hiroki and Manaka died leaving Ayaka as the last member of the family at the age of 8.

Sakatsuki[]

The Sakatsuki (朔月, Sakatsuki?) are an old family rooted in Fuyuki since the Tenshō eraWP (1573-1592)[89] with no apparent ties with the World of Magecraft on the surface. They were wealthy farmers that were allowed the right of a surname and a katana. In the age where the death rate of child birth is insanely high in Japan, children are revered as the entity that exist between the boundary of Gods and humans. They are referred as Child of God (神稚児, Kami Chigo?), with the children possessing Divinity until the age of six.[90] The tradition and culture has been lost in the age of modern medicine, but the Sakatsuki still continue the practice of revering children as divinities.

The Sakatsuki's Child of God can grant the power of wishes unconditionally, though it is uncertain if the Child of God wish granting abilities is based on the age or Fuyuki's magical Leylines. The Sakatsuki are very secretive with their Child of God; no one witnesses the birth of the girl aged below six. They set up Bounded Field inside their house to block out human thoughts. The Sakatsuki kept their children from other humans, with the children solely raised by their mothers and given limited education. After the girl has aged beyond six, the Child of God would become human and would appear in society. To explain the child's appearance and lack of education, they are introduced as having recovered from a chronic illness and then adopted into a relative's family.

The Sakatsuki family was wiped out with the exception of Miyu in the Fourth Holy Grail War.

Sembren[]

The Sembren (センベルン, Senberun?) family was noted to be one of the Clock Tower's most prestigious magus families, with its current head, Feend vor Sembren, being a first rate instructor to the Clock Tower and a first rate magus.

In the world of Fate/Apocrypha, Feend's skills and power earned him a first pick to be a Master for the Great Holy Grail War as one of the Masters of Red. However, upon him falling prey to Father Shirou's trap and subsequent manipulation without actually accomplishing anything in the Holy Grail War, the Sembren's family suffered greatly and his son, Fezgram vor Sembren, is currently trying to work his way up a certain classroom to restore the family's reputation.

In other timelines, including the The Case Files of Lord El-Melloi II and Fate/strange Fake, Fezgram still becomes a student of Lord El-Melloi II and is well known as one of the Clock Tower's up and coming magi that would successfully reach the rank of "Brand" or "Pride" within a short amount of time and has already become a professor at his young age.

Sisigou[]

The Sisigou (獅子劫, Shishigō?) are a magus family already in its seventh generation despite hailing from the Far East, where magecraft can hardly be said to be flourishing. The ancestor of the Sisigou family made a contract with an unknown being in the past which resulted in the decline of producing children. Kairi is the last survivor of this extinct bloodline. They once adopted a girl who was compatible with their magecraft and hoped to pass down their legacy by implanting the Magic Crest to her but she died in the process. There is no successor to this bloodline.

In the world of Fate/Apocrypha, Kairi is selected as one of the Masters of the Red Faction for the Great Holy Grail War, eventually dying and putting an end to the bloodline in this world. While in the world of Fate/stay night, he is still alive and active as a Freelancer.

Sophia-Ri[]

The Sophia-Ri (ソフィアリ, Sofiari?) is a family related to the noble Nuada-Re (ヌァザレ, Nwazare?) lineage (which boasts considerable behind-the-scenes influence within the Association),[91] a prestigious clan that is proud of its latent potential as magi and the family of the current Department Head of the Eulyphis – Spiritual Summoning Department of the Clock Tower. Around the time that Sola-Ui was born, the Nuada-Re family was embroiled in a tumultuous power struggle, and there was a very real fear that their legitimate heir could be assassinated. As a result, they enacted a plan to train both the older brother, Bram, and the younger sister, Sola-Ui, in the rudiments of magecraft so that either one could inherit the family Magic Crest.[91]

In the end, though, the conflict died out before anything happened to either child, and Bram was given the Magic Crest and the title of successor.[91]

Tsuchimikado[]

The Tsuchimikado (土御門, Tsuchimikado?) are a Japanese noble family from the Edo Period. A family of Onmyouji, they are descended from Abe-no-Seimei. The Tsuchimikado were the leaders of the Onmyouji and are known for having long acted as protectors of Japan. However, under Tsuchimikado Yasushige the family lost its position following a series of blunders, and leadership of the Onmyouji was given to the Koutoki, who claimed to also be descended from Abe-no-Seimei. Since then, reclaiming their former position has been the fervent dream of the Tsuchimikado family.[92]

In the world of Fate/Samurai Remnant, Abe-no-Seimei learned of the Holy Grail War though divination and recorded details of the war's structure. Centuries later, his descendant, Tsuchimikado Yasuhiro, would discover these records and use them to create his own weaker version of the Holy Grail, the Waxing Moon. Yasuhiro then became both the Master of Caster and the Overseer of the Waxing Moon Ritual.

Weins[]

The Weins (ウェインズ, Weinzu?) family are a branch family of the Trambelios. They are shown to be one of the most elite families within the Clock Tower due to their status as being related to the Trambelios and their own reputation in their chosen specialty of offering their services in fine Tuning and adjusting the Magic Circuits and Magic Crests of other families.

These advantages have also effectively made the Weins incredibly wealthy and well-off, with their current heir, Melvin, being noted to frequently squander and use gigantic amounts of money with little care for the consequences, with his expenses being shown to not actually damage or endanger his families finances. The considerable finances of the Weins family has also afforded them powerful connections to the upper echelons of the Clock Tower, as shown where Karmaglyph Meluastea Deluc and his family owe a large debt to Melvin’s mother.

Melvin himself also loans various other magi of the Clock Tower considerable sums of money for their research, as shown with Melvin loaning Waver, later Lord El-Melloi II, a large sum of money for his participation in the Fourth Holy Grail War and his later travels and loaned Amleth Wotan a large sum for his research, with Melvin later cashing in various collateral from them when they couldn’t pay him back.

Wodime[]

Currently, the family's heir and head is Kirschtaria Wodime, an extremely prodigious magus of the Clock Tower's Astronomy Faculty and stated to be the "Jewel of the Clock Tower", to the point he was deemed to be a superior candidate to inherit the title of "Lord" than the legitimate inheritor Olga Marie Animusphere after studying under the Astronomy Department's head, Marisbury Animusphere.

Yakou[]

The Yakou (夜劫, Yakō?) are a family of Houjutsu practitioners in Tokyo. Rin Tohsaka had heard of them even in Fuyuki, though didn't know they were still active.[93] A Japanese Magecraft force in possession of a Divine Body — a living fragment of a God.[94] They are a yakuzaWP family and distant relatives of the Ryougis.[95] They live on Mt. Kuchinawa just outside Tokyo.[96]

The Yakou follow the God Ōkuninushi.[97] The name Yakou means “night eon”. In simpler terms, it signifies an endless night. And as this name suggests, their God’s nature is intimate with the Japanese underworld. To pay respect to their God, all members of the organization wear black.[94]

They have deep ties to gambling dens, and because there's little to no need to protect people from fiends in the modern day, managing the gambling houses has now become their main activity.[94]

Incest is not uncommon in the Yakou so they can thicken their special blood with the inbreeding. Father-grandfather, uncle-niece, and father-daughter marriages have all occurred.[96]

Although limited to a few locations, their Boundaries are extremely vast and they have powerful techniques that can be used only within their Bounded Field, thus giving them unparalleled defensive power.[94]

The Yakou use magecraft the way it was done in the Age of Gods. The Yakou magecraft uses kashiwade to call on kami (kami in this context referring to Od, the energy in all living things) to resonate with the opponent's individual wavelength. With this they can do things such as shaping Magic Formulas inside the opponent's body, essentially detonating a bomb inside of them.[98] They also use kagura masks crafted by the Tobori family to perform rites for their magecraft.[96]

Japanese Magecraft is performed by connecting to fragments of Gods called Divine Bodies (神體(がんたい), Shintai(Gantai)?), which are fully-formed organs of Gods. There are only eight known Divine Bodies in Japan, and in order to keep their Mystery from fading the eight groups that hold them have different ways to keep them safe. The Yakou store Ōkuninushi's Divine Body inside of a human being known as a Black Chest (黒櫃, Kurohitsu?).[99] The number of people directly contracted to the Divine Body is slightly short of 100, but that only makes them the third biggest magecraft force in Japan at best.[94]

As an aside, the Yakou family used Muramasa swords not because of their Mystery value but because Muramasa made the most combat-practical katanas. The fact that their Mystery eventually came to surpass their practicality with the passage of the years was a kind of ironic surprise.[94]

Zemlupus[]

The Zemlupus (ゼムルプス, Zemurupusu?) are a family with a relatively weak history and short bloodline. With the family being stated to only be a few generations old and their Magic Crest only being two hundred years old. The Zemlupus family magecraft is anti-beast, meant for fighting animals. Their specialty is on the verge of obsolescence because humans can now track and kill beasts with mundane means, but in the past anti-beast magecraft was very useful for humans to protect themselves from dangerous animals.[100]

However, despite their Anti-Beast magecraft no longer being very useful in the modern world due to it becoming obsolete to modern day weapons and techniques, the Anti-Beast magecraft of the Zemlupus family still had strong merit in the World of Magecraft. This is stated where the Beast Magecraft of Svin Glascheit and the Snake Magecraft of Roland Berzinsky were stated to be weak to it in a fundamental-conceptual level and made members of the Zemlupus family their worst opponents due to the natural advantage their magecraft had over theirs, forcing them to avoid fighting them and negotiate a peaceful resolution with a member they did encounter.[74]

Zepter[]

The Zepter (ツェプター, Tseputā?) are an extinct bloodline likely originating from Bavaria in southern Germany. They experimented with perfecting resurrection of the dead. Whilst they did succeed in restoring the body to a perfect semblance of life, even allowing bodies with missing parts to accept foreign organs with ease, they could never achieve perfect retrival of the Soul.

Having declined for several generations, their final head Heinrich Zepter became a heretic by creating monstrous fusions of man and beast in a fashion none too dissimilar to Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. After fleeing to Present Mountain, America, he was hunted down and killed by Natalia Kaminski and Kiritsugu Emiya. The Zepter family's Magic Crest was destroyed at this time by Kiritsugu, erasing the secrets of their magecraft.

  1. [v] Fate/complete material III: World Material - Theory of Magic - Magecraft: Family lineage of Magus, p.046

    Family lineage of Magus
A magus lineage refers to the Magic Crest relay that passes down a Magic Crest through unilineal succession. Because this “relay” is so important, even if a family’s biological lineage has ceased, the magus lineage will be considered continuous if the crest is engraved onto somebody else’s body. Conversely, if the Magic Crest itself is lost, that magus lineage will be considered to have been severed even if a child with Magic Circuits still lives. Under normal circumstances, a magus selects the best qualified heir from within the family, and gradually passes on the Magic Crest to the successor.
The chosen successor to a magus lineage undergoes harsh training from a young age. Because an abnormal mindset and body are required to use magic, the training to instill these qualities is extremely severe, and it is not unusual to employ inhumane measures such as brainwashing and bodily modification. Thus, as the heir matures he or she inherits the lineage’s magic, knowledge, and research. Finally, a new master is born when the entirety of the Magic Crest is passed down from the predecessor.

Increasing the number of Magic Circuits
Magic Circuits are organs that one is born with, so there is no way to increase their number after birth. There are ways to transfer circuits, but it is rarely done because the success rate is low. Therefore, magus lineages will modify the parents’ bodies or take every measure possible at the moment of a child’s birth to create a successor with even one additional Magic Circuit. Therefore, the children of older lineages tend to have more Magic Circuits.

    Inherited Magic Crests
Magic Crests are heirlooms within which the entirety of a lineage’s research is inscribed, from the first ancestor to the present. The crest contains the regrets of previous family heads’ inability to master their magic. A Magic Crest with a long history is a cursed crystallization impregnated with the feelings of countless preceding magi.

    The Tohsaka family
Rin is the heir to the Tohsaka family, while Sakura was adopted by the Matou family as a successor. Because Tohsaka Tokiomi, the family head, died in the Holy Grail War, Rin inherited Tokiomi’s estate, including his magical patents, businesses in Fuyuki, and other assets. However, at this point most of Tokiomi’s magic crest had not yet been transferred to Rin. Tokiomi’s crest was extracted from his body by the Clock Tower, and given to Tokiomi’s next of kin to be transplanted into Rin.

  2. [v] Fate/complete material III: World Material - Theory of Magic - Magecraft: Land and Thaumaturgy, p.043

    Land and Thaumaturgy

    Magic Foundation Land

To use magic, a magus must first establish contact with a magical foundation engraved in the world, send a command to the foundation, and then execute a pre-constructed function. At this point, mystic energy fuels the execution of the function, so the magus must send the command and supply energy simultaneously.

Magic foundations are magical theories that schools of magic have engraved in the world, and magic is started up in accordance with those rules and systems. For example, the magical theory with the largest foundation is the “Teaching of the Lord” of the Holy Church. Magic foundations engraved in the form of academia and religions fuse intimately with the veins of the land, and the magus using that magic foundation can perform magic anywhere in the world. However, if the magus leaves the land where his magic foundation was engraved in, he loses the backup of his land, and the magic’s power is certain to deteriorate.

Additionally, this effect differs with magic foundations that are neither academia nor religion, but are instead exclusively inherited from person to person, such as in oral tradition or clan teachings. As long as the rules of those foundations are met, it is possible to exhibit the same basic effect irrespective of geographical location.

Q: How does Tohsaka Rin pay for her living expenses when she is performing sorcery using such valuable jewels? Is she eating up her parents’ inheritance? Has she taken up a part-time job like Shirou? Or has she turned her hand to some other trade?

A: The Tohsaka family is still relatively wealthy because it receives royalties from magical patents (theories and rituals used at the Clock Tower. Like real-life patents.), and as a result their income is surprisingly high. Even without any additional revenue, annual income is roughly #0,000,000 yen. ...Although, Rin feels a bit ashamed of this since it’s all thanks to the work of previous generations.

  13. [v] Lord El-Melloi II Case Files material - Encyclopedia: Inorai Valueleta Atroholm [Person], p.098-099

    Inorai Valueleta Atroholm [Person]
Aozaki Touko’s teacher. Head of one of the Three Great Aristocratic Families, Valueleta. Lord of the Faculty of Creation, she was a Brand, a magus of the highest practical rank.
As that consequently places her as the teacher of Araya Souren and a certain other individual, more care was taken in writing her for Case Files than any other character. That being said, when asked about her general image, the response that came back was. “Got it. I’ll leave it all up to you, Mr. Sanda.” The insane image Type Moon had garnered up to that point had just been reinforced. One could say that was the point the author came to terms with the fact that Case Files was going to be accelerated as a whole.
She possesses a triple affinity for Earth, Water, and Wind. Her specialty is Sympathetic Magecraft. Though she only showed a brief look at her abilities in the series, she is especially skilled with magecraft using sand, and the small bag she carries around with her at all times can spill out an immeasurable amount of it. Within the series, Touko says something along the lines of “Please spare me one of your pictures at least.” That is because she knows full well what fate awaits those who are drawn in her sand pictures.

In a manner of speaking, she is the idealized image of a magus. She navigates the political sphere as easily as she breathes, and progresses her research in magecraft as easily as she walks. The fact she strongly supported the Sealing Designation of her favorite pupil Touko is a simple manifestation of that nature. Thinking there were issues of greater importance that took precedence, such a conclusion was only natural for her, and so she didn’t hesitate for a moment in her decision. Feeling no sense of contradiction or conflict in her own character, she is like a mountain ascetic still entrenched in the ways of the world, a perfect and powerful woman.
Personifying the concept that what the people of any given age loved was to be considered art, unlike many magi of her advanced age, she thoroughly enjoys brand new technologies, like her iPod and her personal computer. Though she as an air of approachability to anyone regardless of their relative standings, her total lack of any pretense has the terrifying effect of feeling like she can see through you right down to your very core.
By nature, such pretense and complexity is necessary for humans.
These are inventions created by humans so that society can move along unhindered, after all.
For a member of one of the Three Great Aristocratic Families, removing that necessary element from everything is a suitable kind of monstrosity, don’t you think?
Additionally, her name was given by Nasu Kinoko.
As someone in a position of such enormous power in the Clock Tower, like putting the eyes in a Buddha, the author begged Nasu to be the one to name her.

The Holy Grail War is unknown to the general population, but to what extent is it hidden from normal people? Are the Church people (supervisors) manipulating the media and police (or even the governmental level) to cover it up?

  20. [v] Kara no Kyoukai Special Pamphlet - Encyclopedia: Mage's Association [Others], p.039-040 [T]

    Mage Association [Others]
A self-defense organization formed by practitioners of magegraft, transcending nationality and genre. (Of course, this is in name only.)
Its mission is to manage, conceal, and develop magecraft.
It reserves the use of force to protect itself from entities that threaten its existence (the Church, other mage organizations, and individuals who hunt what they consider taboo). In order to promote the development (or regression?) of magecraft, the Association set up research institutions and established laws that forbid the criminal use of magecraft.
The headquarter of the Association is in London, England. It is also called the Clock Tower.
The Association is divided into three departments. Besides the Clock Tower, there are also the "Giant's Cellar" in the Atlas mountains in Egypt, and the "Sea of Astray", the integrated association in Northern Europe. The "Sea of Astray" was the original Association that predated the Clock Tower, and had ceased communication with the Association since the Clock Tower became the headquarter.
Also, the Association deems the Magic Foundation of the Middle East and the philosophies of magecraft from the continent* as incompatible with its teachings. Conversely, the other two schools also reject the Association.
Furthermore, as Alba stated in the story, the mage organizations in Japan did not join the Association.

The head of the Atlas Institute.
Already having become a Dead Apostle, he has overcome the limit of his lifespan.
His number of and precision with Parallel Thought Processes are overwhelming even compared to other members of the Atlas Institute, as shown by his ability during the story to suppress the rampaging Logos React almost single handedly.
Completely separate from his pursuit of magecraft, he has an overwhelming love for theater.
Furthermore, he has a strong one-sided love for his daughter (or rather, a distant descendant of his from when he was human). Rumors have it that he adds to her trials out of a joy of seeing her under stress, but there are none who can confirm that.
Also, the name Atlasia is a title given to the head of the Atlas Institute. Before becoming the director, he had chosen the name Oberon.
In the world of magecraft, where a resemblance of names holds such a deep meaning, the relationship between him and the fairy king Oberon of a Midsummer Night’s Dream is a story only he knows.

    Aozaki [Person's name]
The name that briefly appeared in this story. It was the name of the mage house that managed the greatest "Spiritual Land" in Japan.
In the mage world, the name had become synonymous with trouble.
The Aozakis were an ancient house, but were by no means prestigious. Because of the "Path" opened by the previous Heads, the current Head of the Aozakis had a greater chance of becoming a "Magician".
The current heirs were a pair of sisters whom were thought to be ominous. After a battle for the right of inheritance, the younger sister became heir of the "Magician" title.
The older sister traveled to London and made quite a name for herself, but quickly withdrew from the Association due to being problematic.
During the Fifth Holy Grail War in Fuyuki City, the older sister was busy hiding her tracks, while the younger sister was roaming around the country.
Although the younger sister was good at nothing but destroying things, the older sister was truly a polymath. Fate might had a little to do with the older sister.

As a magus, he’s a mediocre one who can merely decrease the speed of any object he touches. As for his personality, he’s just like any other modern human in that he’s become much too accustomed to peace. Having nothing to call a conviction of his own, he was thrown into the Holy Grail War through a crazy series of coincidences. By the way, he has a younger sister who apparently had potential and talent, so she separated herself from their family and became a freelancing magus.

One half of the El-Melloi Classroom’s legendary duo.
His elemental affinity is Fire, but it’s been somewhat changed. His specialty in magecraft is Regression.
Many believed that if it were not for Flat, he would be an entirely ordinary person, but with Gray’s arrival that illusion was put to rest. The incident that made the El-Melloi Classroom aware that their title of legendary pair extended to their weirdness was one month before the Adra incident.
Magecraft that borrows the abilities of animals exists all over the world, but the Glascheit family’s strain of magecraft is rather eccentric. It functions not by drawing out a powerful bestial nature, but by transforming oneself wholesale into an animal. Nerves, muscles, bones, and even the cerebrum are rebuilt in a process rivaling the theoretically extinct werewolves.
Speaking from the conclusion, rather than a magus, it would be more accurate to describe Svin Glascheit as a vessel for magecraft. That was why he became so captivated by Gray, who was similarly created to be a vessel for a past hero.
This is, in a certain sense, similar to Karabo, who was constantly being overtaken by the memories of others due to his Mystic Eyes. Having managed to overcome this unique facet of his nature, if Svin had come to meet Karabo at some point, perhaps he could have given him some advice.
Within the story, Svin acquired the rank of Pride. This is not just an acknowledgement of his personal abilities, but Svin himself, who was the crystallization of the Glascheit family’s research, was also taken into consideration. On top of that, having achieved the rank in his teens is a feat rarely seen in the Clock Tower, so it was understandable for El-Melloi II to be struck by such deep feelings on that occasion.

  61. [v] Lord El-Melloi II Case Files material - Encyclopedia: Bestial Magecraft [Magecraft], p.103

    Bestial Magecraft [Magecraft]
The name given to the field of magecraft that utilizes one’s bestial nature.
While this magecraft eats at the minds of those of the Glascheit family, many other forms of it are more mild. For example, enhancing one’s sense of smell to be like that of a dog, enhancing one’s legs to run as fast as a horse, or enhancing one’s eyes to see in the dark like a cat.
Possession by a fox or a dog god, famous in Japan, are also examples of this magecraft.

The current head of the Isemi family, a group of mages seated in the western part of Tokyo.

Their stronghold is on the deep green summit of Mt. Okutama, but he owns several facilities which focus on medical facilities in various places throughout the downtown area too.

As a magi family lineage it is truly rare, for them to achieve adaption and conformity to a certain degree for modern science.

Rather, you could say they are compensating themselves with modern science which magi normally avoid doing, through advanced logical methods as they also couldn’t anticipate any further development than this.

    Yvette L. Lehrman [Person]
Daughter of a family who specalizes in Mystic Eyes, she has a number of Mystic Eyes of her own, fashioned from precious stones, which she can swap out.
Though she is capable of activating various types of Mystic Eyes, that effectively means her brain must create an equal number of pathways through which to activate them. Practically speaking, in order to use her eight varieties of Mystic Eyes, the number of times her brain had been tampered with approaches seven times that. That being the case, the fact she has managed to maintain any sort of stable personality is a testament to her genius.
In developing plans for Rail Zeppelin, it was obvious that someone specialized in Mystic Eyes would be necessary for the setting, but even so she worked well for it. Being a spy for the Neutralist Meluastea faction, a lover of honey traps, with an eyepatch that looked like it was stolen from some anime, she is overflowing with character. Despite that, she seemed to have a strange sense of unity and robustness, to the point even the author had difficulty pinpointing where her true nature stopped and where the acting began.
In regards to her conversation with Melvin in the final volume, since they were both people drenched in lies, for her that must have been one of the few times she needed no deception.

[v] TYPE-MOON BOOKS material -The Adventures of Lord El-Melloi II Glossary: Karmaglyph [Person], p.023

    Karmaglyph [Person]
    Karmaglyph Melissa Deluc.
“Woah, woah, woah, I know that status-wise I’m the leader of the Neutral Faction, but I’m from the puny Eleventh Department. I cannot be compared to the previous El-Melloi.”
“Hey, El-Melloi II, don’t you think it’s unfair for you to monopolize all the fun of the adventure?”
    Lord Meluastea.
Has two attributes: Earth and Ether. He is the Lord of Archeology, and now also the Dean of Mineralogy.
The simplest way to describe him is as a Mage Indiana Jones capable of utilizing the treasures he collected.
He uses Shoot the Moon(Silver-corded Instant-arc), a mystic bow normally hidden in his suit. The mystic bow is capable of several different types of shots and can be used for excavation. Aside from its bow form, it can also morph into a hookshot wire or an emergency crane.
    He’s actually an Alteration pro.
His touch can effortlessly alter metal into rubber, fire into ice, concrete into mud. In addition to this ability, he also carries concealed in his person a diverse array of treasures he collected as the leader of the Meluastea. The sheer adaptability of this ability combined with his Mystic Codes is enough to place him among the Clock Tower’s top five.
He normally keeps this a secret but his true ability is to overclock his treasures.
    Its name is Phantasm Overload.
As someone who has no qualms about altering even his own magical energy with extreme delicacy, Karmaglyph can force a treasure to go beyond its capabilities. Naturally, the treasures burn to crisps more often than not, but until they do, they display power far superior to the Mysteries of the modern era—in some cases superior to their power in the Age of Gods. This couldn’t make for a more horrifying combination with how the Department of Archeology owns quite a few artifacts rivaling the Holy Ark. But obviously, as a lover of archeology, he rarely ever displays this ability.

During the events of The Adventures of Lord El-Melloi II, he’s in his late 30s.
While the Meluasteas were famous for being quite the softies despite being Lords, Karmaglyph’s actions are quite ambitious. Money was always necessary for archeology, but come the 20th century, money suddenly became exponentially more needed by everyone. It’s due to this that he managed to steal the position of Dean of Mineralogy, but this also invited major distress.
Stealing a chair from the Aristocratic Faction put him on Barthomeloi’s watchlist.
The Meluasteas were the leaders of the Neutral Faction, but the Eleventh Department was always among the weakest. Their leadership status was symbolic and held together by tradition. Karmaglyph knew that and this was why he was so invested in solidifying his position.
Also, since the Department of Lore keeps exoanthropic artifacts under custody, they keep each other under constant surveillance. Lore is suspicious that Archeology is withholding artifacts belonging to their category, while Archeology wholeheartedly believes Lore is a hoax to monopolize a set range of artifacts. But despite everything, fieldwork often requires each other’s cooperation.
His interest in El-Melloi II is part political and part because he thinks their situations are similar. Because both lack genuine interest in Lord status and have another goal outside their goal in magecraft.
PS: A large sum of his debt is owed to Melvin’s mama.
His name is portmanteau of karma and hieroglyph.

    Einzbern [Others]
One of the Three Families that established the Fuyuki Holy Grail War. The family that lies at the center of events in “Fate/stay night” and “Fate/Zero” (Writer: Urobuchi Gen).
In “Apocrypha”, they didn’t become discouraged by the fact that the Greater Grail was stolen in the Third Holy Grail War… rather, they don’t seem to have that kind of mentality in the first place (if they gave up, it would only be when even their greatest creation, Illyasviel, would fail to attain the Third Sorcery), and they are doing everything they can with the belief that they might be able to reproduce that miracle. Accordingly, they have come to reluctantly have relationships with other magi despite their insular and unsociable nature, and the Musik family took advantage of their confused state of affairs in order to receive a portion of their homunculi craft. However, what the Einzberns taught was merely the equivalent of giving a toy to a child, so it wasn’t much of a problem for them.
The Musik family concealed the fact that they were part of the Yggdmillennia clan, but naturally the Einzberns know about it. However, the Greater Grail was formed by taking apart the only successful Justeaze-model homunculus, so the Einzbern agreed to cooperate with them in case they should manage to activate one.

    Norwich [Organization/Other]
A pseudonym for the Faculty of Modern Magecraft.
Alternatively, the “Daddy Long Legs” family of the Clock Tower.
Having been fortunate with money for generations, the Norwich family has a tradition of adopting people of interest, causing the name to spread throughout the Clock Tower. Once upon a time, Adashino Hishiri and Heartless bore the name, but later cut their ties with them. Neither of which was a particular concern to Norwich, due to their strict philosophy of “It’s not worth pursuing those who flee.”
The name Norwich came to be associated with the Faculty of Modern Magecraft due to the strong backing the Norwich family provided when it was being set up as one of the twelve main Faculties of the Clock Tower.
While the current head of Norwich has taken an interest in El-Melloi II, due to their complex political situation, Reines has decided it is best for them to keep their distance. After all, she had long since given up hope for her brother to possess such a sense for politics.

Comment from Takeuchi Takashi: The original form of Fate/Stay Night’s Tohsaka Rin. Although this time we started over with design, I think the resultant design was faithful to the image that the original author had.

Explanation: A flawless and beautiful woman. Extremely proud, showy and cruel. A sadist. Ayaka’s rival and an ojou character, but isn’t of the “ohohoho~” type. The magus family she was born into is several levels higher than the Sajyou family. The two fathers were old acquaintances, but Misaya did not meet Ayaka until after she became a Master. By the way, among the Holy Grail War’s Master ranks, “Princes” and “Thrones” have the same position.
Because of her father’s persistence in wanting to realize the Holy Grail, a curse of “If you become a Master and do not obtain the Holy Grail, you will die” was put on her. That is, after becoming a Master, if she did not achieve victory, she would die. In reality, the one who cursed her was not her father but ■■. Although Misaya’s father struggled to dispel his daughter’s curse, he was murdered by ■■. In the middle of the story, the curse spreads to her entire body, and she dies. After this, she becomes a living corpse on the verge of becoming a fallen angel.

  88. Fate/EXTRA CCC Fox Tail Chapter 51: "Sakagami Kazuhito 1"
  89. [v] PRISMA material/pre - Encyclopedia: Sakatsuki [Lineage], p.28-29

    Sakatsuki [Lineage]
An old family rooted in Fuyuki since the Tenshō (1573~1592) era. When one thinks that it was there since about the time Nobbu was burnt or not, it’s a lineage with quite the history.
The Sakatsuki family were wealthy farmers that were allowed the right to bear a surname and a katana. It was during the time of the third generation that the strange phenomenon was seen.
Total annihilation of the rice fields due to a record-setting flood. It lasted for several years. The dead by starvation continued appearing one after another, and the decline of labor force resulted in a further reduction of the harvested amount. The chain of poverty was already in an unstoppable state. Corpses and resignation were widespread around the land, and on top of that snow fell and accumulated mercilessly. That late winter in which every hope was given up, a child was born at the Sakatsuki family.
―It was a baby girl that had red eyes.

That year, Fuyuki was struck by a strange abundant harvest. The sun was shining, the earth grew fertile, and the river was full of gentle currents. The natural disaster took a sudden change and was turned inside out into a gift of nature. The destiny of people is so influenced by the whims of nature. When the object of fear and gratitude is replaced to something else that is not nature, the concept of Mystery is adhered.

The farmers regarded the baby girl of the Sakatsuki family as “a child sent by the god of fertility,” and revered her. A narrow and deep faith was fervently consecrated to the red-eyed baby girl, and she actually brought harvest until two years later. And the baby girl died without counting her third year.
Whether the red-eyed baby girl really had the power of Mystery or not can’t be ascertained after all this time. If Mystery gave birth to faith or if faith gave birth to Mystery isn’t important. Because after that, the baby girls born in the Sakatsuki family had all red eyes, and undoubtedly possessed a paranormal power ― the property of granting the wishes of people.

Since then, the Sakatsuki family spent several generations learning the way of treating the God Child. If that power was well used , harvest, prosperity, and even execution of criminals could be done as one pleased. But the conclusion they got was “not to use the power of the God Child.” While omnipotent power was in their hands, they renounced to their right to use it. That decision was made out of a modest and deep affection towards the child.
Well, with something like that, the Sakatsuki arrived to the present as an old family of women, without having prospered, without having been ruined, for generations. Infant girls from the Sakatsuki family generally are not different from ordinary girls after they surpass the age of six. But, maybe as an after-effect of the mother’s wish of “raising them healthily,” in general they are raised to become superwomen with excessively high specs in both mind and body. Such a lady of character played an active role in rain or shine, and sustained the house.

    God Child [Legend]
In an era in which the mortality rate of infants was high, immature children were closer to death than adults —In other words there was an approach in which they were thought to be beings close to “things that can’t exist in this world.” Moreover, there have been legends since ancient times in which gods, as well as equal rebellious beings, appeared under the form of a child. That might be the proof that people detected divinity in the innocent beings that are children. The faith of the God Child is an instance of such thoughts.
“Amidst the gods until the seventh”
A religion/legend in which, with that age reckoning, children until they reach the age of seven are not seen as humans but as beings closer to a god or a spirit. That is commonly just a connotation of the level of, for example, “being granted the role of a god at a festival” or “being taken care of by the adults as the symbol of the faith,” but in the land of Fuyuki there was a Mystery that reached the real thing.

    [v] Fate/Zero material - Encyclopedia: Sola-Ui Nuada-Re Sophia-Ri [Person's name], p.099

    Sola-Ui Nuada-Re Sophia-Ri [Person's name]
Daughter of the noble Nuada-Re bloodline, which boasts considerable behind-the-scenes influence within the Association, and Kayneth El-Melloi Archibald's fiancé.
Generally, families of magi make it a rule to only pass down their secrets to a single successor, while keeping any other children they may have ignorant of even the existence of sorcery itself. However, at the time Sola-Ui was born, the Nuada-Re family was embroiled in a tumultuous power struggle, and there was a very real fear that their legitimate heir could be assassinated. As a result, they enacted a plan to train both the older brother and the younger sister in the rudiments of sorcery, so that either one could inherit the family crest.
In the end, though, the conflict died out before anything happened to either child, and Sola-Ui's older brother was given the crest and the title of successor.
Sola-Ui, on the other hand, was no longer of any use to her family, and her very existence was disavowed. She became a mere tool to be given away in a political marriage, where her excellent physical capacity for sorcery and childhood training would allow her to serve as an assistant for some first-rate magus.
However, Sola-Ui did not harbor any resentment toward this treatment. To be perfectly frank, she didn't even understand what "likes" and "dislikes" were in the first place. While it's certainly true that she always selfishly toyed with those around her, that was simply because it was ingrained in her from a very young age that acting in a way that would preserve her value as a noble was the secret to success in life. Sola-Ui herself had never truly wanted or hoped for something even once since being born.
Consequently, she didn't care one bit whether the attraction caused by Diarmuid's mystic face was real love or not. For her, the simple sensation of passion boiling up from the depths of her heart was her greatest treasure, and she had she had no intention of giving it up after she had finally obtained it. Because, passion is the very thing that gives life value.
…When Nasu Kinoko heard all of that, he started writhing around muttering something that sounded a lot like "It's a perfect moe bull's-eye…!"

    Yakou [Organization]
A Japanese magecraft force in possession of a Divine Body—a living fragment of a god.
The number of people directly contracted to the Divine Body is slightly short of 100, but that only makes them the third biggest magecraft force in Japan at best.
The name Yakou means “night eon.” In simpler terms, it Yakou signifies an endless night. And as this name suggests, their god’s nature is intimate with the Japanese underworld.
To pay respect to their god, all members of the organization generally wear black, be it on a suit or a kimono.
They had deep ties to gambling dens, and because there's little to no need to protect people from fiends in the modern day, managing the gambling houses now became their main activity.
Although limited to a few locations, their Boundaries are extremely vast and they have powerful techniques that can be used only within their Bounded Field, thus giving them unparalleled defensive power.
Incidentally, Japanese organizations never say the name of their gods without reason or use an alternative name known only within the organization. This is an attempt to prevent the deterioration of Mystery by not banalizing the name. The Four Demon Hunter Families of old were believed to have employed this same method.
