The Meiji Restoration Singularity is Singularity created during the aftermath of the Human Order Incineration Incident. It is unique in that it is a single point in time unconnected to the past and the future.
Chaldea's visit to this Singularity was covered in an event of Epic of Remnant; GUDAGUDA Meiji Restoration (ぐだぐだ明治維新?)
Setting[]
During the Battle at the Time Temple, Andras developed self-awareness. In fear of his demise, he fled the Time Temple while the battle was still ongoing. Left in a near-death state, he was guided through the sea of death by a dying Chacha's powerful sense of shame and eventually drifted into a Singularity, where he died. However, his residual thoughts resonated with the powerful desire not to die and fused with it to materialize as an existence similar to a Holy Grail.[1][2]
Needing to connect with the Spirit Origin of a Heroic Spirit to maintain his existence, Andras called out to those who shared his desire of not wanting to die.[1][3] The first of these was Hijikata Toshizou, who only recalls having been fatally shot at Hakodate. As he wandered the Singularity, Hijikata projected his desire not to die until he wins, which Andras granted by shaping the Singularity accordingly. However, their versions of immortality were incompatible with each other, so Andras sought another to fuse with.[3]
He also summoned Oda Nobukatsu who shared his desire to bless all mortals with eternity so Oda Nobunaga can be freed of the Oda, and they can returnto the carefree days of their childhood.[4][5] In accordance with this plan, Andras disconnected the Singularity from the past and the future.[6] However, Nobukatsu needed Andras' power to maintain his existence, as he doesn't qualify as a Heroic Spirit. Still needing to fuse with a Heroic Spirit, Andras summoned Chacha, who only recalled being consumed by the flames of the burning Osaka CastleWP, and tried to fuse with her. She escaped the Singularity, however, so Andras ordered Nobukatsu to recapture her.[1][7] While waiting for Chacha to return, Nobukatsu overthrew the Tokugawa Shogunate while pretending to be Nobunaga Oda and created the Oda Shogunate a week before Chaldea's arrival. Meanwhile Hijikata recreated the Shinsengumi, who eventually came into fierce opposition with the Oda.[7][8]
History[]
GUDAGUDA Civilization and Enlightenment[]
Okita Souji and Oda Nobunaga are relaxing with Ritsuka in the latter’s room when Mash alerts them to an intruder. A Nobbu suddenly appears, but it’s quickly dispatched by a masked person.[9]
Ritsuka assumes they’re a man which angers the latter, revealing they’re a woman and inadvertently reveals her name is Chacha when she speaks in the third-person. She claims to come from another dimension to warn Chaldea of impending doom.[9]
Okita recalls Chacha was the concubine of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who unified Japan during the Sengoku period, and Nobunaga’s niece, who led an ill-fated life.[9]
Nobunaga is shocked to see her niece. Chacha, removing her mask, is shocked to see her aunt as she thought Akechi Mitsuhide killed her in Honnoji.[9]
Leonardo da Vinci interrupts via hologram to inform the group that Chaldea has become infested with GudaGuda Particles. She refuses to explain what they are and ends the call.[9]
Mash explains Servants contaminated with GudaGuda Particles turn into disappointments. Not wanting that to happen, she strongly advise they all leave. At Chacha’s behest, the heroes then rayshift to what she describes as a crazy-weird realm she doesn’t understand at all.[9]
Blackbeard Arrives[]
Arriving on a beach, Nobunaga quickly defeats Edward Perryeach, sending him flying into the distance. She assumes with his defeat crisis has been averted and asks Chacha what time period they’re in. Chacha confesses she doesn’t know, only that isn’t theirs. She then remembers Perryeach wasn’t the problem.[7]
Mash speculates they’re in 19th century Japan around the end of the shogunate. It is pre-Meiji Restoration when Okita was still alive.[7]
A Nobbu tank suddenly appears to capture Chacha. She refuses to go back, saying there is nothing in that castle anymore.[7]
The heroes defeat it. A local fisherman compliments their fighting prowess, having witnessed the battle and the one prior. But he complains there has been nothing but fighting ever since the Oda shogunate conquered the Tokugawa last week. Okita and Nobunaga are both equally shocked to hear there is an Oda shogunate.[7]
Meanwhile, in a golden throne room, Nobbu reports to a figure they have located Chacha occupied by an unknown party. The figure doesn’t care who the others are, boasting none can interfere with their plans, and claim themselves to be Nobunaga.[7]
Nobbudamon Incident[]
The heroes are next in Kyoto eating at a local tea shop when they hear a commotion. It is the Oda and Shinsengumi fighting again. The heroes see someone claiming to be Nobunaga fighting someone Okita recognizes.[8]
She immediately rushes over to him and identifies as Hijikata Toshizou. He demands her help, but she is confused about the situation and the identity of “Nobunaga”.[8]
“Nobunaga“ proclaims he is Nobunaga back from the dead when the real Nobunaga recognizes him as her brother, Oda Nobukatsu. Nobukatsu claims he took his sister’s name and made a new Oda Shogunate because the people wished for a hero to save them from their decadent ways.[8]
Nobunaga prepares to punish him for taking her name when Hijikata stops her, as Nobukatsu is his prey. Okita, however, implores both of them not to fight for the time being.[8]
With reluctance, Nobunaga agrees to Okita’s request and decides to accompany Nobukatsu back to his camp. Hijikata decides to retreat as well, demanding Okita come with him back to headquarters. Okita, assuming by headquarters he means the Shinsengumi headquarters, agrees to go with him.[8]
She and Nobunaga then argue about who Ritsuka will go with. Regardless of their choice, Mash and Chacha follows Ritsuka.[8]
Let's Go, Our Oda Shogunate![]
If Ritsuka joined the Oda, the heroes gather at Nobukatsu’s abode, in a golden tea room, following a battle with the Shinsengumi. Nobukatsu thanks Ritsuka and his sister for getting the funds necessary to complete the Oda’s new weapon. Beating the Shinsengumi in battle has also put Nobunaga in a good enough mood that she postpones her brother’s punishment until they’ve defeated the Shinsengumi.[2]
But changing the subject, she asks her brother if he doesn’t find the tea room gaudy. Chacha is reminded of Hideyoshi’s golden tea room and asks Nobukatsu if he built it. Nobukatsu claims it was given to him by the Oda’s sponsor. He then leaves for a meeting with a weapons merchant.[2]
While he does that, the heroes pay Okita a visit. During said visit, a Nobusengumi spy hands a report to Hijikata: Ronin are plotting to burn Kyoto, and they’re secretly meeting at the Ikedaya Inn.[2]
Go, Go! Everyone's Shinsengumi[]
If Ritsuka joined the Shinsengumi, the heroes gather at the Shinsengumi headquarters following a battle with the Oda. Okita thanks Ritsuka for gathering the funds to make the Shinsengumi financially stable like it never was.[10]
Hijikata sends her and the others out on patrol, which they use as a chance to visit Nobunaga. During said visit, a Nobusengumi messenger sent by Hijikata hands a report to Okita: Ronin are plotting to burn Kyoto, and they’re secretly meeting at the Ikedaya Inn.[10]
GUDAGUDA Idekaya Tumble[]
At the Ikedaya Inn, Saigou Edimori and Katsura Tesla argue about how their respective companies, Satsuma Corporation and Choushu Industries, are superior to the other. Their sponsor, however, convinces them to cooperate for the sake of their mutual goal and join forces to become the SatChou Alliance.[11]
Okita and RItsuka burst into the room to arrest them, prompting the sponsor to escape. Okita tries to give chase, only to be stopped by a group of Mecha Nobbu summoned by Edimori. She and Ritsuka fight them.[11]
Meanwhile, outside the inn, Nobukatsu is revealed to be the sponsor. He worries what his sister would do if she were to find out, but believes he can finally become the official head of the Oda if the SatChou Alliance kills her for him. Unfortunately for him, Nobunaga and Chacha overheard him.[11]
They prepare to punish when Tesla attacks with Nobbu UFOs. Nobukatsu uses this operating to escape, telling Tesla he’ll see him you-know-when, you-know-where, for the you-know-what. Nobunaga tries to chase after her brother, but the Nobbu UFOs block her.[11]
Meanwhile, in the inn, Ritsuka and Okita are still fighting Edimori’s Mecha Nobbu. Okita is getting exhausted but is determined to keep fighting and requests Ritsuka empower her with a Command Spell. Unfortunately, she coughs due to her illness, causing her to fall down the stairs. Fortunately, when she opens her eyes again, Hijikata has arrived and helps destroy the remaining Mecha Nobbu.[11]
With his army destroyed, Edimori falls onto his knees in utter dismay. Hijikata has him captured for interrogation later.[11]
Nobukatsu arrives with a captured Tesla, who surrendered after the Nobbu UFOs were destroyed. Hijikata decides the Shinsengumi will interrogate Tesla as well, but Nobunaga wants to interrogate both inventors herself. Okita tries to keep tensions between the two from escalating, only for her to violently cough again.[11]
Edimori and Tesla use this chance to flashbang the heroes and escape. While escaping, Edimori reveals his factory in Toba is producing tens of thousands of Mecha Nobbu, and Tesla reveals his company in Fushimi is testing a powerful weapon.[11]
Hijikata blames Nobunaga for the inventors’ escape, though they have determined their headquarters are in Toba-Fushimi. Nobunaga asserts the Oda will defeat them and demands Ritsuka leave with her. Ritsuka is concerned about Okita’s condition, however. Okita claims she can still fight, but she collapses almost immediately.[11]
Universal Battle of Toba-Fushimi[]
Okita finds herself back at Shinsengumi headquarters in bed being cared for by Ritsuka and Chacha.[6]
Mash appears, wishing to speak with Ritsuka. She has been long for some time, admitting while Ritsuka was heading toward Ikedaya she asked Da Vinci to do an analysis on this realm. She asks to speak about it privately somewhere else. Chacha permits it, saying she’ll continue to nurse Okita.[6]
Speaking in private outside, Da Vinci reveals this realm is in stasis. It is not a Singularity of a specific point in history nor altered history. It is a single point in time unconnected to past and future, a world where time is deliberately stopped. Da Vinci senses a strong will behind it, one that says “it ends here” or “nothing beyond this point is necessary.” [6]
Suddenly Ritsuka hears a commotion coming from Okita’s room. They and Mash rush over there to find Chacha arguing with Hijikata about taking Okita into battle to Toba-Fushimi when she isn’t well enough. Okita joins him anyway, causing Chacha to leave in anger but not before giving medicine to Okita. The heroes then leave for Toba-Fushimi.[6]
Arriving at Toba-Fushimi, the heroes see Nobunaga is already there observing Nobukatsu and the inventors’ Nobbu army. She notices the heroes, but that Chacha isn’t with them. Ritsuka explains what happened.[6]
Moving on, Nobunaga asks for Hijikata’s assessment of the enemy. Hijikata assesses that they’re outnumbered, so their only option is to distract the enemy with a feint while another unit flanks. He decides Okita will lead the flank feint while he leads the feint. However, since Okita is still unwell, Nobunaga decides she’ll lead the feint while Okita and Hijikata lead the flank. The heroes head into battle.[6]
We Won! The The Oda Shogunate Finishes!/Key to Victory is Shinsengumi![]
Chacha soon arrives to see the heroes have won the battle when she sees Nobukatsu running off somewhere. She eavesdrops to hear him being ordered to kill Ritsuka. However, Nobukatsu is alerted to her presence when she is shocked by his mentioning of Taikou.[5]
He tells her he was summoned to be Takiou’s servant and he’ll send her to the castle. Chacha refuses to believe Taikou is alive, but Nobukatsu replies death hasn’t affected either of them due to the the realm’s nature.[5]
Edimori and Tesla are defeated and disappear. Nobukatsu then arrives with an unconscious Chacha. He reveals his true master is the Great Gold Demon Taikou, Toyotomi Hideyoshi. A golden castle then suddenly appears which Nobukatsu goes into with Chacha.[5]
The Secret Emiyamaru[]
In a cavern, a voice implores Chacha to come back to them. She refuses to go back there, asserting there is nothing. The voice implores her again, saying her children, Tsurumatsu and Hideyori, are here too. Chacha continues to resist the voice’s temptations.[12]
The heroes prepare to go rescue Chacha. Hijikata recalls Demon Taikou is the identity of the voice he heard before.[12]
Meanwhile, at the castle. Nobukatsu addresses the generals of the Toyotomi Shogunate summoned by Taikou: Goutou Setanta, Mouri Medinaga, Sanada Emimura, Mysterious Chousokabe Heroine X, and Akashi Ex. Calling them the Sun Fortress Five, he leaves the defense of the castle to them while he goes sacrifice Chacha to Taikou. None of the Sun Fortress Five like the fact they’re going to let Chacha to die, but as Servants, they have no choice but to obey their summoner and by extension Nobukatsu.[12]
The heroes near the castle when they’re stopped by fortifications suddenly summoned by Emimaru. They defeat him along with the rest of the Sun Fortress Five. Before he disappears, though, he implores the heroes to save Chacha, saying it is what the Heroic Spirit, Sanada YukimaruWP, wants.[12]
Nobukatsu is disappointed the Sun Fortress Five were useless beyond stalling. However, thanks to it, he has already sacrificed Chacha thus reviving Taikou. He then shifts space to a cavern.[12]
GUDAGUDA Final Battle, Fortress of the Sun[]
Massive amounts of magical energy emanate from the Sun Fortress. Mash calls from Chaldea, having returned there without informing Ritsuka so Da Vinci could analyze a few things for her. Da Vinci reveals the corpse of a Demon God who died in the Time Temple and drifted to this space is at the castle’s core.[4]
Taikou appears and announces the creation of an eternal golden paradise. Nobukatsu proclaims to his sister a new almighty savior has been born the Demon God's remnants, and within the space, Taikou will bless all mortals with eternity. He did of all this to free Nobunaga from her obligations to the Oda, so they can relive their carefree childhoods forever. Nobunaga rejects him though, so Nobukatsu sends waves of his soldiers to force her to understand. Ritsuka, Okita, and Hijikata fight Nobukatsu’s army while Nobunaga deals with her brother.[4]
Nobukatsu’s army is defeated and Nobunaga prepares to execute her brother, only for her to miss on purpose. Nobukatsu is so moved that she couldn’t bring herself to kill him, a family member, that he immediately clings to her while crying. Nobunaga demands he stop that for they still have another fight——against Taikou.[4]
Farewell, Loving GUDAGUDA World[]
Nobunaga calls out to Chacha, whose yet to be consumed by Taikou, telling her no Oda could ever die so easily. Chacha confesses she has been hearing the voices of those who tried to protect the Toyotomi family, blaming for its downfall. Nobunaga, however, helps her remember Hideyoshi was always and only kind to her, thereby realizing Taikou’s deception.[1]
She then affirms Taikou truly is the corpse of a Demon God, deducing it had gained self-awareness during the battle against Goetia. But in gaining self-awareness, it came to fear its own death and so fled the Time Temple. It eventually drifted in a near-death to this space where it finally died, with only its vindictive desires remaining.[1]
Surprised Nobunaga deduced all that, Da Vinci reveals Taikou is the manifestation of the Demon God’s residual thoughts. It resonated with the powerful desire not to die, then fused with that desire to materialize as something akin to a Grail. It cannot maintain its existence, though, without using the Spirit Origin of a Heroic Spirit as a catalyst. Realizing the space will return to normal if they free Chacha, the heroes fight Taikou.[1]
A flashback reveals the Demon God was Andras. After he had drifted to the space, Andras expressed his desire to keep living alone in his own world without purpose, wanting only to relish his newfound self-awareness a little longer. It was then he found Chacha and tried to make his vessel, realizing it was her powerful sense of shame over the Toyotomi’s downfall that guided him through the sea of death.[1]
In the present, Andras realizes Chacha will never accept eternity. He finds humans incomprehensible, but he also realizes life without purpose is meaningless. He accepts he failed to properly order his goals and purpose in his brief existence and disappears.[1]
Nobukatsu begins to disappear as well. He doesn’t qualify as a Heroic Spirit, so he could only maintain his Spirit Origin thanks to Andras. He disappears, telling Nobunaga he leaves the rest to her.[1]
Da Vinci and Mash urge the heroes to escape the space before it collapses, yet it isn’t even though Andras is gone. Da Vinci wonders if there is still a shard of Andras somewhere when Nobunaga deduces Hijikata has it.[1]
Shinsengumi[]
Nobunaga has surmised Hijikata was another Heroic Spirit summoned by Andras. Hijikata realizes it is the truth, recalling he appeared in the space after he was shot at Hakodate. He wonders if that means Andras consumed him, too. Nobunaga tells him not necessarily.[3]
She explains Andras called to those who shared his desires and maintained the space. Hijikata is one of the keystones that created the space while being a Stray Servant who didn’t need Andras’ power. If Andras had consumed Hijikata, then the space would have been more of a hellish battlefield. Furthermore, Hijikata’s version of immortality doesn’t match with Andras’, nor is he the kind who would let someone else control his Spirit Origin.[3]
Okita believes everything will be resolved if they can talk Hijikata back to his senses. Nobunaga tells her that is impossible for not even Andras could release him from madness.[3]
She has surmised Hijikata never realized he turned into a Heroic Spirit after his death. He continued to wander the space, all the while projecting his desire not to die until he wins towards the Grail——toward Andras. Andras granted his desire by shaping the space accordingly. Okita wonders if that means Hijikata intended to continue living to forever embody the Shinsengumi.[3]
Hijikata concludes the heroes are trapped in the space until he dies. Okita tries to talk him down, informing him he is already dead and that the Shinsengumi is long gone. Hijikata, however, proclaims the Shinsengumi will never end so long as he is around. He then fights Okita to determine whether his or her Shinsengumi is the real one.[3]
Okita defeats Hijikata. He accepts she is now on Ritsuka’s side, but proclaims his Shinsengumi will never die. He disappears, telling Okita to always keep her makoto banner flying.[3]
With Hijikata gone, the space begins to collapse, so the heroes rayshift back to Chaldea.[3]
Meanwhile, in presumably the still collapsing space, Hijikata accepts he had died. It enrages him his conviction never failed him, yet his body did, but not as much as the fact Okita defeated him. He was glad he got to see her again, though.[3]
Andras urges him to leave before the space collapses completely. Hijikata regrets he wasn’t more compatible with Andras, as the space would’ve been better fortified otherwise. Andras thanks him for teaching him to die lamenting the life lost, seeing this as the sole saving grace he received with his self-awareness.
Accepting they’ll soon disappear, Andras tells Hijikata to keep fighting even though he cannot be saved. He calls this Hijikata’s punishment for briefly redeeming his evil, as well as his final wish. After Andras disappears, Hijikata declares he’ll accept whatever battlefield he’s summoned to.[3]
Meanwhile, at Chaldea, Ritsuka and Mash go to the former’s room to take a break only to find it had been turned into a golden tea room by Chacha. Nobunaga and Okita, who is recuperating since she used Noble Phantasm too much, are there as well. Chacha gives Ritsuka the Grail she took from Andras, and joins Chaldea.[3]
