The Meiji Restoration Singularity is Singularity created during the aftermath of the Human Order Incineration Incident. It is unique in that it is a single point in time unconnected to the past and the future.

Chaldea's visit to this Singularity was covered in an event of Epic of Remnant; GUDAGUDA Meiji Restoration (ぐだぐだ明治維新?)

Setting[]

During the Battle at the Time Temple, Andras developed self-awareness. In fear of his demise, he fled the Time Temple while the battle was still ongoing. Left in a near-death state, he was guided through the sea of death by a dying Chacha's powerful sense of shame and eventually drifted into a Singularity, where he died. However, his residual thoughts resonated with the powerful desire not to die and fused with it to materialize as an existence similar to a Holy Grail.[1][2]

Needing to connect with the Spirit Origin of a Heroic Spirit to maintain his existence, Andras called out to those who shared his desire of not wanting to die.[1][3] The first of these was Hijikata Toshizou, who only recalls having been fatally shot at Hakodate. As he wandered the Singularity, Hijikata projected his desire not to die until he wins, which Andras granted by shaping the Singularity accordingly. However, their versions of immortality were incompatible with each other, so Andras sought another to fuse with.[3]

He also summoned Oda Nobukatsu who shared his desire to bless all mortals with eternity so Oda Nobunaga can be freed of the Oda, and they can returnto the carefree days of their childhood.[4][5] In accordance with this plan, Andras disconnected the Singularity from the past and the future.[6] However, Nobukatsu needed Andras' power to maintain his existence, as he doesn't qualify as a Heroic Spirit. Still needing to fuse with a Heroic Spirit, Andras summoned Chacha, who only recalled being consumed by the flames of the burning Osaka CastleWP, and tried to fuse with her. She escaped the Singularity, however, so Andras ordered Nobukatsu to recapture her.[1][7] While waiting for Chacha to return, Nobukatsu overthrew the Tokugawa Shogunate while pretending to be Nobunaga Oda and created the Oda Shogunate a week before Chaldea's arrival. Meanwhile Hijikata recreated the Shinsengumi, who eventually came into fierce opposition with the Oda.[7][8]

History[]

Okita Souji and Oda Nobunaga relax with Ritsuka in their room when Mash alerts them of an intruder. A Nobbu suddenly appears, but it’s quickly dispatched by Chacha. She claims to come from another dimension to tell Ritsuka of impending doom. Leonardo da Vinci then tells the group that Chaldea is infested with GudaGuda Particles. Hearing these turn infected Servants into disappointments, the group rayshift to the source.[9]

Upon arriving on a beach, Nobunaga sends Blackbeard flying into the distance. She asks Chacha what period they're in, but the latter only knows it isn't theirs. A Nobbu Tank then appears to capture Chacha, but the group defeat it. They're thanked by a local fisherman, who reveals there's been constant fighting ever since the Oda Shogunate conquered the Tokugawa last week.[7]

The group eats at a local Kyoto restaurant when they hear a commotion. It is the Oda and Shinsengumi fighting again. The group sees a man claiming to be Nobunaga fighting Hijikata Toshizou. Hijikata demands Okita's shelp, but she's confused about the situation and the identity of "Nobunaga". "Nobunaga" proclaims he is Nobunaga back from the dead when the real Nobunaga recognizes him as her brother, Oda Nobukatsu. Nobukatsu confesses he made a new Oda Shogunate to save the people from their decadence. Nobunaga prepares to punish him for taking her name when Hijikata stops her, as Nobukatsu is his prey. Okita stops them before a fight can ensue. Nobunaga then decides to accompany Nobukatsu back to his camp. Okita decides to accompany Hijikata to assumably the Shinsengumi headquarters. She and Nobunaga then argue about who Ritsuka will go with. Regardless of their choice, Chacha follows Ritsuka.[8]

If Ritsuka joined the Oda, the group go to Nobukatsu's abode following a battle between the Oda and the Shinsengumi. Nobunaga postpones her brother’s punishment until they’ve defeated the Shinsengumi. While Nobukatsu meets with the weapons merchant with the funds Ritsuka gathered, the group pays Okita a visit. A Nobusengumi spy then hands a report to Hijikata. Ronin are plotting to burn Kyoto, and they’re secretly meeting at the Ikedaya Inn.[2]

If Ritsuka joined the Shinsengumi, the group return to the Shinsengumi headquarters following a battle between the Oda and the Shinsengumi. Okita thanks Ritsuka for gathering the funds to make the Shinsengumi financially stable like it never was. Hijikata sends the group out on patrol, which they use as a chance to visit Nobunaga. A Nobusengumi messenger sent by Hijikata then hands a report to Okita. Ronin are plotting to burn Kyoto, and they’re secretly meeting at the Ikedaya Inn.[10]

At the Ikedaya Inn, Saigou Edimori and Katsura Tesla‘s benefactor convince them to join their companies’ products. Okita and Ritsuka then burst into the room to arrest them, prompting the benefactor to escape. Okita tries to give chase, but a group of Mecha Nobbu block her. While Ritsuka and Okita fight them, Nobukatsu is revealed to be Edimori and Tesla’s benefactor. Nobunaga and Chacha prepare to punish him upon hearing this revelation when Tesla attacks with Nobbu UFOs. Nobukatsu escapes while they’re busy fighting. Meanwhile, in the inn, Ritsuka and Okita breakthrough the Mecha Nobbus to get out of the inn. Hijikata then arrives to help then destroy the remnants. Edimori surrenders afterward, and he is captured for interrogation. Nobunaga and Chacha then arrive with a captured Tesla, who surrendered after the Nobbu UFOs were destroyed. However, the two inventors flashbang the group, and escape while Nobunaga and Hijikata argue. While escaping, Edimori reveals his factory in Toba is producing tens of thousands of Mecha Nobbu, and Tesla reveals his company in Fushimi is testing a powerful weapon. After they escape, Okita collapses from overexertion.[11]

Back at Shinsengumi headquarters, Mash appears and explains to Ritsuka that she had Da Vinci analyze the Singularity while they went to the Idekaya. Speaking in private, Da Vinci reveals the Singularity is in stasis; it is a single point in time unconnected from past and future. It is a world where time is deliberately stopped. Suddenly, Ritsuka overhears a commotion coming from Okita’s room. Chacha argues with Hijikata about taking Okita into battle to Toba-Fushimi when she isn’t well enough. However, Okita joins him anyway, causing Chacha to leave, but not before giving medicine to Okita. The group then leaves for Toba-Fushimi.[6]

Arriving at Toba-Fushimi, Hijikata assesses that they’re outnumbered, so their only option is to distract the enemy with a feint while another unit flanks. He decides Okita will lead the feint while he leads the flanks. However since Okita is still unwell, Nobunaga decides she’ll lead the feint while Okita and Hijikata lead the flank.[6] Chacha soon arrives to see the battle is going well for the group when she sees Nobukatsu running off somewhere. She eavesdrops to hear him being ordered to kill Ritsuka. However, Nobukatsu is alerted to her presence when she’s shocked by his mentioning of Taikou. He tells her he was summoned to be Takiou’s servant and he’ll send her to the castle. Chacha refuses to believe Taikou is alive, but Nobukatsu replies death hasn’t affected either of them due to the Singularity’s nature. Meanwhile, on the battlefield, Edimori and Tesla disappear after they’re defeated. Nobukatsu then arrives with an unconscious Chacha. He reveals his true master is the Great Gold Demon Taikou, Toyotomi Hideyoshi. A golden castle then suddenly appears that Nobukatsu goes to with Chacha.[5]

The group prepares to rescue Chacha. Hijikata recalls Demon Taikou is the identity of the voice he heard before. The group near the castle, the Sun Fortress, when they’re stopped by fortifications suddenly summoned by Sanada Emiyamaru. They then defeat him, Gotou Setanta, Mouri Medinaga, Mysterious Chousokabe Heroine X, Akashi Ex, all of whom were summoned by Taikou to obey Nobukatsu’s orders while he sacrifices Chacha to Taikou. The group confronts Nobukatsu, who reveals Taikou has been revived with Chacha’s sacrifice. He then shifts space to a cavern.[12]

Massive amounts of magical energy emanate from the Sun Fortress. Da Vinci reveals the corpse of a Demon God who died in the Time Temple is at the castle’s core. Golden Demon Taikou Hideyoshi appears and announces the creation of an eternal golden paradise. Nobukatsu proclaims that within the Singularity, Taikou will bless all mortals with eternity. He did of all this to free Nobunaga from her obligations to the Oda, so they can relive their carefree childhoods forever. Nobunaga rejects him though, so Nobukatsu sends waves of his soldiers to force her to understand. While Ritsuka, Okita, and Hijikata fight Nobukatsu’s army, Nobunaga deals with her brother.[4]

After Nobukatsu’s army is defeated, Nobunaga prepares to execute her brother, only to shoot past him on purpose. She then calls out to Chacha, whose yet to be consumed by Taikou, and makes her realize Taikou’s deception. She then reveals the Demon God fled the Time Temple, fearing its own death upon gaining self-awareness. It eventually drifted in a near-death state into the Singularity where it finally died. Da Vinci reveals Taikou is the manifestation of the Demon God’s residual thoughts. It resonated with the powerful desire not to die, then fused with that desire to materialize as something akin to a Grail. It cannot maintain its existence, though, without using the Spirit Origin of a Heroic Spirit as a catalyst. Realizing the Singularity will return to normal if they free Chacha, the group defeat Taikou.[1]

The Demon God is revealed to be Andras. It was also a nearly dead Chacha’s powerful sense of shame that guided him through the sea of death. Andras realizes Chacha will never accept eternity. While unable to understand humans, he also realizes life without purpose is meaningless. After Andras disappears, Nobukatsu begins to disappear as well. He doesn’t qualify as a Heroic Spirit, so he could only maintain his Spirit Origin thanks to Andras. After he disappears, the group finds the Singularity isn’t collapsing even though Andras is gone. Da Vinci wonders if there is still a shard of Andras somewhere when Nobunaga deduces Hijikata has it and he was Andras’ vessel.[1] Hijikata recalls appearing in the Singularity after being shot at Hakodate. Nobunaga explains Andras called to those who shared his desire of not wanting to die. Hijikata is one of the keystones that created and maintained the Singularity, but unlike the others, he didn’t need Andras’ power. Nobunaga theorizes if Andras had consumed Hijikata, then the Singularity would have been more of a hellish battlefield. She realizes Hijikata’s version of immortality doesn’t match with Andras’, so he didn’t let Andras control his Spirit Origin. She also realizes Hijikata never realized he turned into a Heroic Spirit after his death. He continued to wander the Singularity’s battlefields while projecting his desire not to die until he wins towards Andras. Andras granted his desire by shaping the Singularity accordingly. Hijikata realizes the group is trapped in the Singularity until he dies. He then fights the group to determine whether his or Okita’s Shinsengumi is the real one. With his demise, the Singularity begins to collapse, so the group rayshift back to Chaldea.[3]

In the still collapsing Singularity, Hijikata accepts his death. Andras urges him to leave before the Singularity collapses completely. Hijikata regrets he wasn’t more compatible with Andras, as the Singularity would’ve been better fortified otherwise. Andras thanks him for teaching him to die lamenting the life lost, seeing this as the sole saving grace he received with his self-awareness. Accepting they’ll soon disappear, Andras tells Hijikata to keep fighting even though he cannot be saved. He calls this Hijikata’s punishment for briefly redeeming his evil, as well as his final wish. After Andras disappears, Hijikata states he’ll accept whatever battlefield he’s summoned to.[3]

Meanwhile, in Chaldea, Chacha gives Ritsuka the Grail she took from Andras, and joins Chaldea.[3]
