Melty Blood: Type Lumina is a reboot of the Melty Blood franchise following the continuity of the Tsukihime Remake series,. It released on September 30th, 2021 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and Steam.

Plot[]

Unlike Melty Blood Act sub-series, which took place after both Tsukihime's non-existing route of Satsuki Yumizuka (a year later), and Kagetsu Tohya (a month later) in original timeline, Type: Lumina takes place ten days before Tsukihime -A piece of blue glass moon-. However, some of the characters' episode takes place within certain routes in Tsukihime -A piece of blue glass moon- or Tsukihime -The other side of red garden-.

Characters[]

The roster consists of 18 characters (14 initial and 4 DLC rosters). It was said that some characters who appeared in the original timeline depicted in the Melty Blood Act sub-series, such as the game series' original main heroine, Sion Eltnam Atlasia, won't appear in this game, due to this game's timeline continuity taking place before the remade events of Tsukihime, Kagetsu Tohya, and Melty Blood Act sub-series.

Gameplay[]

Most of the gameplay systems carried over from the Act games, with the exception of Guard Meter and Moon Styles.

There are new gameplay systems introduced:

  • Rapid Beat allows players to execute combinations with repeated presses of the attack buttons. However, once a same button is pressed second times, the third followup will immediately goes to a Launcher (regular main button outside Rapid Beat is universally 3C) while on the ground and Air Throw while in the air, meaning Reverse Beat cannot be used normally.
  • New Moon Systems:
    • Moon Skills: very powerful Specials that can be unleashed by consuming the Moon Icons that appear next to the Life Gauge. These deal greater damage than regular Specials, and are not only powerful but easy to activate with simple controls using combinations of the directional buttons and attack buttons.
    • Moon Drive: a Chain Shift/Roman Cancel/Overdrive-based power-up that can be activated by using all of Moon Icons any time with more than one half full. It temporarily boosts Moon Skill, increases Magic Circuit or number of possible Jumps/Dashes, as well as providing various other effects.

Additionally, the Last Arc mechanic has been updated with another variant: Instead of requires EX Shielding, a second variant of Last Arc mechanic can now be used via pressing all four main buttons (A+B+C+D) simultaneously and normally, as most characters’ Last Arc moves are being reworked into Instant Kill-like attacks. Last Arc can be access after losing a previous round and gaining four level gauge bars on next rounds at a same time; then can only be used once at full level, causing the character's level bar slots revert back to regular three levels.

The game is also confirmed to have Rollback Netcode for online battles. However, a Cross-Play system between different consoles is not featured.

Development[]

Type Lumina initially started development in early 2010 as an untitled Melty Blood HD Remake, prior to French Bread shifting development to their original game, Under Night In-Birth, however development was halted due to TYPE-MOON being busy with developing Mahoutsukai no Yoru. A decade later, French Bread and TYPE-MOON returned to collaborate again and rebooted the series, with Delightworks assisting in production and sales. Type Lumina appears to run on the same engine and uses a similar sprite style as Under Night In-Birth and Dengeki Bunko Fighting Climax, both developed by French Bread. It was planned for a worldwide release on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Microsoft Windows and Xbox One on September 30, 2021. While confirmed to be taking place prior to Tsukihime -A piece of blue glass moon-, Melty Blood: Type Lumina was originally was originally meant to be a "what-if scenario", until Shiki's arcade ending confirms the game’s canonical continuity, though some like Dead Apostle Noel alternatively takes place during certain routes during between Tsukihime -A piece of blue glass moon- or the upcoming Tsukihime -The other side of red garden-.

Apart from the upgraded graphics and much different gameplay, the teaser shows animated cinematic cut-in screens for super moves, even faster gameplay than previous versions and HD graphics. Character naming conventions have been reverted to English styles even for organic Japanese names, and like French Bread's and Type-Moon's recent releases, now comes with English language out of the box. Previous Melty Blood, the Act sub-series (safe for Current Code) releases were exclusively in Japanese.

In TYPE-MOON Vol. 5, the game’s initial roster was originally though to end with 13. However, TYPE-MOON Vol. 6 presentations reveals this game adds one more initial roster, who happens to be originating from a series outside Tsukihime timelines, Fate timelines.

On October 29, 2021, it will feature post-launch DLC characters and their associated stages.

  • Season 1:
    • The first two representing teachers were released on January 13, 2022 for free on January 15, 2022. In the end of 2021, the said DLC Pack’s second fighter was announced to commence both upcoming movie adaption and home console ports of the Tsukihime prequel, Mahoutsukai no Yoru.
    • The second two representing the high-ranked members of Holy Church will be released on April 14, 2022. Both fighters are announced at the same time after Type-Moon's official tournament on April 10, 2022. The characters were originally non-playable at the initial release as well.
  • Season 2: Announced after Type-Moon's second official tournament on June 26, 2022, Four characters are set to be released for Summer and Winter 2022 respectively.
    • Neco-Arc's return as a playable character in Summer 2022 was foreshadowed in the Boss Rush of the game, where she was originally non-playable. Other than to commence EVO 2022, Neco-Arc is accompanied by another Fate timelines' guest fighter, as part of exchange collaboration for inclusion of Arcueid's Archetype-Earth form in Fate/Grand Order. Additionally, the Story Mode scenario will be updated with sprite and 3D stage bases and receives multiple scenarios as well.

12 years after the inclusion Melty Blood Actress Again in the main EVO 2010 (while Under Nights In-Birth Exe:Late[st] is solely the first French-Bread owned game to participate in the main EVO 2018), Type Lumina becomes the second game made by both French-Bread and TYPE-MOON to be in main EVO tournament, with the latest entry is in EVO 2022 on August 2022, whether there will be bigger announcements or not, before the overall Melty Blood series’ 20th anniversary.
