Mesala Escardos (メサラ・エスカルドス, Mesara Esukarudosu?) is the ancestor of Flat Escardos.
Profile[]
Background[]
Mesala was a contemporary of figures like Van-Fem and Kischur Zelretch Schweinorg 1800 years before modern day. While he was not on the level of true magicians, he was still a powerful and ancient Magus who was full of bizarre ideas. In Monaco, he made a small yet deep Workshop where he would interact with a Magician friend and other huge names. In one such conversation, a weird idea came to his mind. It was sparked by a talk with an acquaintance where he heard of an interesting allegory of countless possibilities. In other words, it was about countless works that are lined up in parallel with his own.[1] Unlike other Magi who would consider it a joke, Mesala found hope in these words. While he did not have a clear thesis at the moment, he was patiently waiting until he had a brainstorm.
Usually, a Magus would keep their research a secret, but Mesala was too excited to not express his ideas to his peers. He told them about his dreams and ambitions, and encouraged them to strive for the same goal. Most of what he got in return was ridicule and laughter for what was seen as an impossible endeavor. Others simply said that he could just modify someone else's body, so there was no need to wait such a long time. With Mesala's skill, modification would indeed be a more ideal path. However, he argued that the creation actualizing itself through evolution was the entire point. There were two people who actually listened to Mesala but didn't endorse his ideal: Zelretch and Van-Fem. While they held different lives and positions, both thought that Mesala's dreams, while unlikely, were possible. Since there were people in his circle who would listen to his ideas in earnest and would debate the theory, he thought that was enough to use the rest of his life for his plan. He planned to use his life and the blood of his descendants as forfeit. [1]
While it can be assumed that Magi would always use their bloodline in a thesis, he decided to set up one gimmick for the Escardos family: as time went on, they would continue to forget more about their purpose. He could not trust that his descendants wouldn't rush the process and attempt to complete the goal during their generation. He thought to himself that his creation will be finished at random one day, so it will not be ideal to let it out incomplete. The creation needs to take away everything that the family ever had. This would mean the Escardos family will be one with only history and no theory which would mean they will need to either find a new thesis by exploiting the Magic Crest or try to gain riches and success in the world of Magi. He feared that his greedy descendants would add new modifications onto the evolution system of the Magic Circuits or Crest in order to become his creation. While he did not think it would bear any fruit for at least 1000 years, the scenario of his family's greed was worse than Magi stealing his research after realizing its potential. [1]
As he wished, the Escardos family forgot its purpose and became a family with only history to back it up. He had set up a mad mechanism for his child and the Crest. He had a goal he wished to accomplish: to make Earth's next "Prime Ones", the species that would stay behind and take over when either Human Order was over or humanity abandoned the planet.[1] While alive, there was no way to know whether or not the plan would work. As such, he spoke a soliloquy for the child who would have to inherit this burden. In this soliloquy, he expresses his thanks and apologies to this child who will end up becoming a prodigy in an age of minimal Mystery. He expresses that this person will be hated, but that is the fate of the body being granted to them. Life will be hard, but when the Crest is inherited, the child will be completely erased before doing anything of any importance. He ends it with saying that their erasure will give the planet a new Prime Species, so he thanks them and apologizes.[1]
His work eventually culminates with the birth of Flat Escardos long after the Escardos family had forgotten their goal. Upon learning of Flat's existence, both Van-Fem and Zelretch praised Mesala with the same exact words, "I see. So, you've finally done it. You've achieved the one thousand eight hundred year dream of the Escardos family, which even your descendants have forgotten."[2] While Mesala finally attained victory in his gambit, he was short-sighted given there were factors he did not consider. He did not predict that the parents of Flat would purposely lose the Crest out of fear of their child, but this was circumvented when Flat retrieved it. While he knew Flat would be a prodigy, he could never predict how much of a freak Flat would be nor the person Flat ended up meeting.
Personality[]
Little is currently known about Mesala's personality, but Van-Fem does refer to them as an "old friend".[3]
Role[]
Fate/strange Fake[]
Upon Flat's death at the hands of Faldeus Dioland, Van-Fem said that Mesala's plan has reached completion by sacrificing Flat who had a future in order to obtain the past, causing a mysterious entity to emerge from Flat and take over his body.[4]
Abilities[]
Little is currently known about Mesala's abilities, but Thia was created as the culmination of the 1800 year old plan devised by Mesala in the Escardos family's Magic Crest. Requiring the Crest to remain unmodified until the appropriate successor was born, it was a plan unlikely to come to fruition. The plan was made in mind that the successor would be a sacrifice.[4] While below Magicians, he was still seen as a powerful Magus.
