Mikiya Kokutou (黒桐 幹也, Kokutō Mikiya?) is one of the main characters of Kara no Kyoukai and the husband of Shiki Ryougi.[2] After marrying her he changes his name to Mikiya Ryougi (両儀 幹也, Ryōgi Mikiya?).[5]
Profile[]
Background[]
Mikiya has a normal family consisting on his parents and his sister Azaka Kokutou. He is also the nephew of Daisuke Akimi but he refers to him as his cousin and looks up to him as an elder brother.
Shiki often refers to him as Kokutou, saying that his name reminds her of a French Poet. The poet in question is Jean CocteauWP, whose Romanized name is pronounced in a nearly identical manner.
When Mikiya was in junior high, there was an interscholastic field day where six of the city’s junior high schools participated in the competition. Since Mikiya's athletic ability was poor, he was given administrative duties in health and safety instead of being chosen as a participant. He took care of the injured Fujino Asagami.[6]
Appearance[]
In the majority of the story, Mikiya is a youth in his late teens.[2] His outward appearance has been described as plain, but cute and he is often seen wearing black clothing. His trademark look is his black-rimmed glasses.[7] Due to Lio's action, Mikiya can only use his right eye to see and one of his leg was crippled.[8]
Personality[]
He is gentle, sincere, perceptive, diligent, compassionate, attractive, he possesses infallible eloquence and charisma, and is infallibly judicious. He has repeatedly shown to be incredibly intelligent, logical, deductive, passionate, and strong-willed. But mostly his personality reflects his Origin "one that will never hurt others, more so than anyone else," which leads him towards a completely normal life. Mild-mannered and caring, he is someone all sorts of people and animals easily trust and become loyal to, even strangers can comfortably speak with him or listen to what he says, believing what he says and agreeing with anything he suggests. People and animals are naturally very fond of him.[2] His relationship with Lio Shirazumi was simply a simple senior/junior relationship though Lio interprets it as an unbelievable friendship.[9] Mikiya in his twenties is a natural laid-back lady-killer.[10] Mikiya prefers to be a normal being rather than a "special being", though he is not aware that he already became "special" to Shiki.[11]
He believes that crying is a "special" action that makes the person whom you are crying for "special" in return. Because he instinctively attempts to live a "normal" life as his Origin dictates, it is impossible for him to shed tears for someone unless they are truly special to him. Even after Shiki was involved in a car accident and left in a coma, although there were some tears in his eyes, he never cried fully. The only case where Mikiya cries in the entirety of Kara no Kyoukai is when he swears to take up Shiki's sin after her murder of Lio Shirazumi, when he sheds "the bloody tear of a sinner" from his left eye.
Mikiya is an overly safe driver to the point where Shiki would get frustrated.[12]
For normal people, he’s a gentle but otherwise unassuming young man. However, for those walking outside the human path, his impossible normality can become a fatal toxin.[13]
Role[]
Kara no Kyoukai[]
Chapter 2: Murder Speculation Part 1[]
In March 1995, he meets Shiki Ryougi for the first time on a snowy night. The two would end up in the same class as first-year students, Mikiya had exceptionally average grades.[14]
Before his date with Shiki, he was super nervous.[15]
Mikiya would sneak out of his house every night to observe Shiki's movement.[16]
Chapter 3: “Remaining Sense of Pain”[]
When Fujino stayed over in Mikiya's apartment, out of consideration he excuse himself to buy cigarettes even though he doesn't actually smoke, mainly to cool his head when she took a shower.[17]
Chapter 4: The Hollow Shrine[]
Two years ago, he made a promise with Shiki to attend college together. He discovers a doll at an exhibition his friend asked him to attend and fell in love with its flawless craftsmanship. He is so charmed by it that he sought out the creator, Touko Aozaki, and then finds her residence.
With his hopes of attending college with Shiki crushed due to her falling into a coma, Kokutou drops out of college to work under Touko as an assistant investigator. Touko holds his investigative skills with high-regard due to his ability to find her workplace, an abandoned building hidden to all except those who wish to find it. Though she doesn't think much of his deductive reasoning, she's impressed with his research diligence and thoroughness.
Chapter 1: Overlooking the Scenery[]
In August 1998, Mikiya brings over some ice cream while visiting Shiki, but Shiki is not happy to see him and says that she does not like ice cream so she decides not to eat it.
Mikiya went to Fujou apartment to investigate the recent suicide incidents. He was caught in an unconscious state by Kirie Fujou who was attracted to him when he visited Shiki in her coma state.
After Kirie's suicide in September 1998, Mikiya finally wakes up and feels as if he had slept for a very long period of time. Shiki demands that he stay over at her house to finish the ice cream he bought.
Chapter 5: Paradox Spiral[]
Mikiya was contacted by Daisuke about an odd case when a burglar went to the police after he witness the Enjou couple's dead bodies but when the police went; they were alive. At the same time Touko asked Mikiya to accompany her to the Ogawa Apartment Complex to look around.
Touko told Mikiya to investigate all the residents of Ogawa Apartment Complex. He spent a whole month to research and he found out about Tomoe Enjou and details of Lio who is involved with Araya Souren.
Mikiya tries to enter Shiki's apartment but he realized that the apartment has installed new locks. He encounters Akitaka who hands over Kanesada Kuji to him.
Tomoe gives Mikiya Shiki's spare house key before going separate ways.
At the very end, Shiki obtained the key to Mikiya’s apartment.[18]
Chapter 7: Murder Speculation Part 2[]
In February 1999, after Shirazumi left to face Shiki, Kokutou survived the fatal slash though he ended up losing an eye and some mobility in one of his legs after Shirazumi stabs him with Shiki's knife. It took over three months for Mikiya to recover from the mental damage from the blood chips drugs.[8]
Upon Touko leaving on journey, Mikiya was pretty much left unemployed. He basically has two choices. The first is making the best use of his talents, finding employment at an honest company, and honestly working his way up the corporate ladder. The second is entering one of the accounting personnel starved companies affiliated with the Ryougi Group, where he would strike out on his own, eventually becoming one of Papa Ryougi's most trusted Fixers.[19]
The Adventures of Lord El-Melloi II[]
Mikiya is now an accountant for the Ryougi organization, though calls himself unqualified.[20]
The Man Who Devoured God[]
In 2007, Mikiya is outside the Ryougi residence, watching the moon, vaguely afraid of something. His daughter Mana comes out and asks what he's doing, and he answers that he got a letter from Touko for the first time in a very long while. In his hand, he has an envelope addressed to Ryougi Mikiya. A really old envelope, as if it was something she was supposed to have sent years ago and forgot.[5]
The Devil of the Wandering Sea[]
Two weeks ago Lord El-Melloi II asked Touko if she knew anything about removing curses, intending to find a cure for his student Gray. Touko said she knew just the person for the job and arranged a meeting between El-Melloi II and Mikiya. Mikiya offers an exchange of favors: to get help from the curse remover, he would like El-Melloi II to investigate the kidnapping of Akira Yakou, a girl who was taken away from her family.[20]
The Yakou are relatives of the Ryougi, and so they contacted Mr. Ryougi when Akira went missing, who in turn contacted Mikiya due to his history of investigating disappearances. However many of the Ryougi, including Shiki herself, were against helping the Yakou. Shiki even left Tokyo temporarily in order to not support Mikiya's decision. Mikiya could have found Akira himself, but the goal is not to find her but save her, which is beyond his capabilities, hence asking El-Melloi II for help.[21]
Mikiya has a key to Touko's old agency the Garan no Dou, which has a new owner now but that owner is a friend of his. He gathers the two separate groups - Akira and her kidnapper Bai Ruolong, and El-Melloi II and his companions - together to discuss what they should all do going forward. He also gives Bai Ruolong a spare key to the Garan no Dou for him to stay at temporarily, as Bai Ruolong is currently homeless with no form of identification.[22]
After Akane Yakou captures Akira and Bai Ruolong and begins sacrificing them to save Yukinobu Yakou, Mikiya confronts her and asks whether Yukinobu even wants to be healed. Yukinobu had always been jealous of the relationship between Mikiya and Shiki, and more than anything wanted to stop being so special and be normal just like they were. Akane calls Mikiya scarier than any Lord of the Clock Tower or devil of the Wandering Sea because of how quickly and unwittingly he exposes human fragility that they hide even from themselves.[23] When Akane asks why he's getting involved with people so much bigger than himself like Ziz and El-Melloi II, Mikiya's answer is the Yakou are related to the Ryougi and he simply should do what he can to help his wife's family.[24] He leaves the mountain in his car, since he is a normal person he would have been killed by the mountain's mist, however Shiki killed it so that he can get out without a problem after she finally came back home.[24]
Mikiya and Mana bid farewell to El-Melloi II's group at the airport, and El-Melloi II assures Mikiya he still intends to find Akira who had been taken by Ziz.[25]
Kara no Kyoukai: Future Gospel[]
Other appearances[]
In Carnival Phantasm, he makes brief cameos during the series and a small appearance in Episode 12 at the Ahnenerbe party, discussing with Shiki Tohno and Shirou Emiya the possibilities of a new season.
In Fate/EXTRA, he was briefly mentioned when Touko talks to Hakuno Kishinami about being too busy attending to other work given to her by Mikiya. It is said that by the time Ayako Mitsuzuri enters college, she has a one sided love with Mikiya.[26]
In the Fate/Grand Order x Mahoutsukai no Yoru collaboration event, Shiki mentions that she is on vacation with her family and Mikiya and Mana are currently in their hotel room. They appear in person at the end of the event, after everything is resolved.
Abilities[]
Kokutou is mostly just an ordinary human. Touko notes that he seems ordinary, but his Origin is "one that will never hurt others, more so than anyone else."[4] His natural ability is to find lost objects but it is almost a kind of stubbornness.[7][27] He is able to find Touko's office despite her having protected it with a Bounded Field to prevent any ordinary people from detecting it. Mikiya is somehow able to bypass it once he starts searching for her. Although ordinary, he is very talented in research and investigation in which Touko, Daisuke and Tomoe thought he could have been a detective. Daisuke often discussed various aspects of the case he was working with Mikiya because Daisuke likes to hear what Mikiya has to say as a third party observer.[28]
Development[]
Creation and Conception[]
Mikiya Kokutou was illustrated by Takashi Takeuchi in Fate/Grand Order.

A youth in his late teens. Employee of the Garan no Dou. A very normal and unremarkable individual. One of the protagonists of the story, possessing characteristics of the Yang.
Although he was related to all characters of Kara no Kyoukai, he only stepped into the maelstrom during one incident.
Mild-mannered and caring, most people were very fond of him.
... However, for some inexplicable reason he encountered Shiki, who was his polar opposite. Subsequently, he was doomed to a long-term relationship with Shiki, for better or for worse. Be careful when walking alone during snowy nights, Mikiya.
Since he symbolized the peaceful daily life, he was very popular among people who sought such things. Even after the story concluded, Mikiya still made Shiki restless.
He was an example of "the scariest things are always found closest to you in unexpected forms".
The protagonist of Tsukihime inherited the characteristics of both Mikiya and Shiki.黒桐幹也【こくとう―みきや】【人名】

He doesn't have a single special ability to his name. A completely normal young man in every respect. Both his outward appearance and personality are plain. His trademark look is black-rimmed glasses.
Other than that, there's not much to him. Personality-wise, he's the prototype for Tohno Shiki. Although he isn't strong, he's definitely the strongest person of all. For some reason, he's extremely talented at finding things and nothing else.
Also, though their personalities are similar, Tohno Shiki is still a child compared to Mikiya.黒桐幹也【人名】

The deuteragonist of Kara no Kyoukai. You know who he is.
For normal people, he’s a gentle but otherwise unassuming young man. However, for those walking outside the human path, his impossible normality can become a fatal toxin. This nature is in full display in Adventures, as the shock of meeting him was enough to split Yukinobu’s head into 17 pieces. PS: The hardcore fans may have noticed it, but the Shiki that Yakou Yukinobu saw there was SHIKI. Yukinobu himself had subconsciously noticed that, which is why his narration of the moment consistently described Ryougi as “the high schooler” instead of “her.”
During my research trip for The Adventures of Lord El-Melloi II, I rechecked the chronology of the events between the end of Kara no Kyoukai and Future Gospel. The essential thing I wanted to verify was who owned Aozaki Touko’s office, Garan no Dou, and the answer was that the owner at the time was Mizuhara Maayu. It’s only a little while after this that a young man stumbled into place and ended up publishing a fairy tale book.両儀幹也【人名】

Nasu: All right, now that Daisuke is asleep, the Great Reasoning begins! …Anyway, it’s not like they have logic battles at the scene of the crime or anything, but occasionally Daisuke likes to hear what Mikiya has to say as a third party observer.Q:事件のことを幹也に色々と話していた大輔さんですが、幹也はひょっとして今まで大輔さんのブレーン的なことをやってたんですか?
武:おっちゃん、ごめん!
奈:でた、眠りの大輔、名推理の始まりや!……と、現場で推理合戦する事はありませんが、たまに第三者の意見として聞いていたようです。
