Miyamoto IoriWP (宮本 伊織?) is the Master of Saber in the Waxing Moon Ritual of Fate/Samurai Remnant.
Profile[]
Background[]
Miyamoto Iori Sadatsugu is the student and adopted son of Miyamoto Musashi.[5][6] He is a ronin living in Asakusa, Edo, who studied the Niten Ichiryu style of swordsmanship, but Musashi passed away before he could teach him the secrets of the art.[5] As he couldn't in good conscience call himself the successor to Niten Ichiryu without learning all the secrets, he gave up a future in government service and became a ronin, eventually finding himself in Edo.[1] Still seeking to master the Way of the sword, he spends his days training while making ends meet.[5]
Iori was born in a small, port town. As a child, the town was raided by bandits known as the Yagorou Gang and everyone was killed. Because the bandit leader happened to like kids, he spared Iori, taking him in as a servant boy, but Iori knew that the bandit would eventually kill him too once he got bored. Shortly after this, the bandit group encountered a mysterious wandering sword saint, who went on to wipe out all 84 men singlehandedly.
Afterward, Iori was adopted by Miyamoto Musashi. From that point on, Musashi trained Iori in the way of the sword. On his deathbed, Musashi admits to Iori that he took him in with the intent to train him into a worthy opponent, not out of love or compassion, but Iori was too kind, being born in the wrong age.
Shortly after his master's death, while visiting his grave, he encounters a wandering samurai who went to pay his respects. The man recounted his battle with Musashi, leading Iori to realize that the man before him was Sasaki Kojirou, the only man who's blade Musashi feared. Iori then asked to become Kojiro's disciple, to which he agreed. While under his tutelage, Iori learned Tsubame Gaeshi Hiyoku no Dan.
At some point following Musashi's death, while going through his master's possessions, he and Kaya happen upon the Crimson Codex. The Codex goes on to teach Iori the basics of magecraft, specifically jewelcraft.
On one occasion, Iori tried to avoid eating to gain enlightenment, but ended up passing out from hunger.
Appearance[]
Miyamoto Iori is a young man with a sharp and striking appearance. He has tousled, dark brown hair that falls haphazardly around his face and over his forehead, and teal eyes.
He is clad in traditional Japanese attire; a dark teal kimono with a subtle woven pattern that gives the fabric depth and texture. The kimono's sleeves are wide and fall elegantly from his wrists, and the garment is paired with a black hakama that falls straight and covers his legs. His attire is completed with simple straw sandals.
Personality[]
Iori's personality is a mix of profound talent, intellectual prowess, and a deep conflict between his values and the era he inhabits. According to Musashi, Iori possesses remarkable talent but is born in an era that does not fully appreciate his abilities. [7][8] Iori's differences from renowned swordsmen like Musashi are not due to a lack of talent, but because he could not adopt the same inhuman level of indifference Musashi exhibited. He values rationality, wisdom from his time, and deeply respects tradition.[7]
Musashi acknowledges Iori's intellectual prowess and admires his ability to adapt to new ideas, reverence for traditions, and a longing for peace. However, Musashi considers Iori "too kind" due to these qualities, as he witnessed that teaching Iori in the Way of the Sword had brought him suffering.[8] Iori's participation in the Waxing Moon Ritual is fueled by his desire to prevent unnecessary bloodshed and to defeat those with evil intentions before innocent lives are harmed.
As observed by Musashi, despite his passion for battle and the way of the sword, Iori struggles to find contentment in the relatively peaceful era he lives in, echoing an inner conflict similar to Kirei Kotomine's. Both Iori and Kirei grapple with desires that clash with societal norms and notions of goodness. They attempt to maintain a facade of tranquility in an effort to conform and seek happiness, despite the apparent futility of their efforts.
Notably, in the broader context of his personality, Iori is described as a “lady-killer” by Takao Dayu, hinting at his charisma or charm.[9] Arjuna considers Iori his sole friend in the World of Fate/Samurai Remnant, but feels that another personality might be hidden behind Iori's smile, watching with intense and fiery eyes.[10] His father Musashi says that Iori would’ve been happy if he had chose a humane path but he chose the sword and threw it all away.
The female Musashi states that the Iori in her world is identical to himself.[11]
The act of creating a statue of Buddha by carving it out of materials such as rock or wood is one of the very few hobbies Miyamoto Iori enjoys in his free time. He began by copying his teacher Miyamoto Musashi, who would make carvings as a meditative practice. Although he practices carving whenever he has time and suitable lumber at hand, Iori has yet to create any statues that would surpass Musashi's works. The statues Iori can carve are Bishamonten, Vairocana, Kanzeon, Fudō Myōō, Senju Kannon, and a Gilgamesh statue.
Role[]
Fate/Samurai Remnant[]
Iori is the protagonist of Fate/Samurai Remnant.
Prologue[]
In the morning, while practicing his swordsmanship, Iori is interrupted by Kaya, who persuades him to go work so he can afford food. At the request of Sukenoshin, Iori takes out a group of thugs causing trouble. After doing so, he notices a bruise on the back of his hand. That night, he is attacked by Yui Shousetsu, who gives her full name as a courtesy. While he fights back the numerous shinobi who attempt to kill him, he is helpless against Rider. Before he is killed, Command Spells appear on Iori's hand and he summons Saber. The two then fall back, fighting through more shinobi before Rider & Yui catch up to them. During Saber and Rider's fight, Lancer suddenly appears and interferes. Saber and Lancer then fight throughout Asakusa and Saber attempts to use their Noble Phantasm; however Iori, realizing how powerful Saber's attack is, attempts to stop them, unintentionally using a Command Spell to prevent Saber from charging it fully. As a result, while a chunk of Asakusa is damaged, Lancer manages to survive. Not wanting to draw attention, Lancer, her master, Rider, and Yui all retreat. Saber attempts to follow, but Iori stops them, telling not to use that attack again because of how much damage it caused. Saber then explains the basics of Waxing Moon Ritual to Iori, and after returning home, Iori decides to participate in the ritual to protect the people of Edo.
The next morning, Iori is woken up by Saber. Kaya then arrives and assumes Saber to be Iori's girlfriend. The Crimson Codex then reveals himself and offers to turn Iori's home into a Magical Workshop, sending Iori and Saber off to gather supplies. After they do so, the book quickly knocks down the wall to the connecting home to build the workshop. Following lunch, Iori and Saber head to Yoshiwara to help the law enforcement of the area. Upon leaving the house, Saber is amazed by the amount of people as well as the multitude of features in the city and orders Iori to show them around. Iori goes on to show Saber a food stall before they begin to depart. However, Saber suddenly notices a magical disturbance in the area, and Red suggests that they investigate. Reaching the location of the disturbance, a hoard of skeletal warriors along with a Phantom Ogre Warrior suddenly appear, forcing Iori and Saber to eliminate them. After the battle Red encourages Iori to use the dropped mounting to enhance his swords and the group departs to Yoshiwara.
Upon entering Yoshiwara, the two are spotted by Sukenoshin, who asks them to help out a merchant who needed aid. The merchant claims that thugs have been extorting him for money and he wanted Iori to guard him. Saber suggests cutting all the thugs down, but Iori explains that killing is against the law, so unnecessary killing should be avoided. Saber, while seeing it as a bother, agrees to help take down the thugs without killing them. Iori and Saber then follow the merchant to the thugs and proceed to incapacitate them, but after the battle it is revealed that the thugs were actually debt collectors who the merchant owed money to. Iori attempts to confront the merchant, but he immediately flees upon his ploy being revealed, and Iori admonished Sukenoshin for not checking the man's background. The two are then approached by an elderly man and Madam Yamabuki, a courtesan. The man explains that he is a moneylender and he hired those thugs to make the merchant repay his debt. Not having the money to repay the man himself, Iori offers act as the man's sword arm for the day to apologize. The man accepts, telling Iori to visit 3 borrowers behind on their payments and collect the owed money. The first debtor attempts to fight them off with a group of thugs, but is defeated and forced to pay. The second debtor attempts to hide in his house, but Saber uses their spirit form to enter and intimidates him into paying. They find the third debtor being attacker by Oni-bis and a Cursed Lantern. After Iori and Saber defeat the monsters, Iori can't help but compliment Saber's swordsmanship. They then confront the debtor who, assuming them to be in league with the monsters, pays them and flees. Returning the the moneylender, he offers Iori a proper job in debt collecting, but Iori declines.
As they leave, Iori and Saber witness Takao Dayu being led across town. Takao suddenly has Rogue Berserker attack them before she leaves. Iori, while hesitant to retreat, sees his best course of action to be pursuing Dayu and leaves Saber to fight Rogue Berserker alone. As Iori pursues Dayu, he is pursued by her subordinates, and while he briefly manages to evade them by collapsing some rubble to block his path and sneaking through alleys, he is eventually forces to fight them off. He is then attacked by a mysterious woman, however he quickly recognizes her swordsmanship to be that of his master as she simultaneously recognizes him.
Chapter 1: Demonic Revelry[]
Later, Iori and Saber speak with Berserker Musashi and Dayu in Dayu's quarters. During the meeting Dayu and Saber explain what Heroic Spirits and Command Spells are and Musashi reveals that she is from another world. Dayu and Musashi agree to a truce under the condition that Saber and Iori provide them information on the other masters, with Musashi threatening to attack them if they don't provide the information by the 7th. At Musashi's insistence, Dayu also explains more details about the Waxing Moon Ritual to them, including the Waxing Moon itself, the presence of Rogue Servants and the value of leylines.
They keep talking into the night, and Dayu reveals that Tsuchimikado Yasuhiro is in charge of the ritual. Before they leave, Dayu warns Iori about the dangers of the ritual. After leaving Dayu's quarters, Saber insists that they explore Yoshiwara a bit more before returning to Asakusa. After some more exploring, the two return home and eat dinner. They discuss a bit more about how they intend to approach the war before going to bed.
The following day Iori and Saber proceed to Okachimachi to try and find information on Yui Shousetsu. While Iori is distracted by a merchant, Saber wanders off and Iori manages to find Saber talking to a storekeeper. While Saber pretends that they were investigating, Iori notes the fox mask they have and quickly ascertains that they were having fun. Saber asks the shopkeeper about Yui Shousetsu, and the shopkeeper quietly informs them that Yui is gathering ronin at her military school and suggests that they go to the tavern to learn more. They head to the Ryogokubashi tavern and overhear some ronin complaining about Shousetsu working with the corrupt shogunate. Iori and Saber end up following a group of ronin into a trap; however, their battle is interrupted by the appearance of several monsters, which Iori and Saber defeat. Iori and Saber then attempt to follow follow one of the ronin, but are intercepted by a group of hypnotized soldiers. After defeating them, Iori decides to try to get information about the academy from the constable.
After returning to Asakusa, the constable informs Iori and Saber that a student of the academy lives in the samurai residence in Suidobashi. They conclude that the one who cursed the soldiers is probably Yui, but before they can continue the conversation, they are attacked by monsters. After defeating the monsters, Red insists that they connect to the leylines to increase their defenses. After doing so, Iori performs maintenance on his katana until dinner.
The next day, Iori and Saber conclude that Yui is probably manipulating the shogunate. Saber then suggests that they go to Ueno in order to provoke the shogunate. On the way to Ueno, Red senses enemies approaching from Suidobashi & Ueno. In response, Red has Iori and Saber take the Ueno enemy out by cutting off its connection to the leylines. After reaching Ueno, Saber goes ahead and while Iori is searching for them, he runs into and odd fox-eared girl, who tries to ask him a question. However, Saber then returns and immediately recognizes the girl as a Servant. Before they can finish the conversation, Iori and Saber go to help someone being attacked and fight off more shogunate soldiers. The Fox-Eared then then catches up, revealing herself to be Rogue Rider, the Servant bound to Ueno. She is about to give her real name, but more monsters attack, leading Rider to strengthen Iori before he fights them off. After defeated the monster, Iori laments how their plan to provoke the enemy has failed before thanking Rogue Rider for the help. Rider then reveals her true name as Tamamo Aria and reveals that she has fallen for Iori, but he turns her down, agreeing to be her friend instead.
Upon leaving Ueno, Iori and Saber proceed to eliminate the Suidobashi enemy by cutting off its leyline connection. They then proceed to Suidobashi, but notice a crowd gathered in front of the samurai residence. After seeing that the road ahead is blocked, Iori & Saber try to sneak around the front door, fighting off more monsters and shogunate soldiers. Upon reaching the residence, a guard thanks them for taking care of the soldiers and explains that 2 days ago an armored warrior had killed the shogunate's retainers and guards outside the residence and the lord of the residence was blamed. The guard then reveals that he is Yui Shousetsu's student and, upon being asked, divulges that the academy is called Choukou Hall and is located in Kanda. The pair then decide to return to Asakusa to prepare.
when they return to Asakusa, Iori and Saber overhear people talking about a new shop in the wholesale district and they to go check it out. The shop, Babyloni-ya, turns out to be run by a Heroic spirit, Boss. Saber is prepared to fight, but two children, Eikichi and Miyo, come into the store and Boss gives them each a candy in his image. After the kids leave, Boss reveals himself to be a Master-less Ruler class servant with no interest in the Waxing Moon. Boss then proclaims himself as the one true king of the world before telling the two to leave. After leaving, the shop, the duo encounter a little girl, Sawa, holding a magical gem. She explains that it was given to her by Eikichi and Iori and Saber decide to take it so it doesn't attract monsters. Sawa then tells them that Eikichi and Miyo also have some and went to Torikoe Shrine.
After getting to the shrine, Iori and Saber find the kids being attacked by monsters and intervene. After eliminating the monsters, Iori and Saber take the gems from the kids and Saber ascertains that they came from Ruler's shop. Going back to the shop, Ruler reveals that knew the gems were stolen and that Iori and Saber would get them without his interference. As a reward, he offers Iori the position as his retainer. While Iori initially tries to refuse, he realizes it would be more beneficial to have Boss as an ally and agrees.

Other appearances[]
In the Fate/Grand Order event "Las Vegas Championship Match", Summer Musashi pretended to be Iori.
Abilities[]
As Iori is Musashi's star pupil, he can easily fight other human enemies such as villagers or even squads of ninjas. However, he is still an ordinary human, and is utterly outmatched by most Servants. While Iori may have a slim chance of survival in a confrontation with a Servant if he were willing to face certain death, various factors come into play, including the potential fame boost that a Servant could possess.[12] Arjuna says that Iori has the lethal skill of a Kshatriya.[13]
Swordsmanship[]
Iori uses the same Niten Ichi-ryūWP sword style as Musashi, though Musashi died before he could pass down its secrets.[5] He switches between five sword stances based on Musashi's Book of Five RingsWP. These stances were invented by the Iori in the World of Fate/Samurai Remnant, while Ioris in other worlds don't use them.[3] While he initially only knows the Earth and Water Stances, he develops the Wind, Fire, and Void Stances as the story progresses. By the end of the story, he is capable of defeating Musashi in a battle of pure swordsmanship.
- Earth Stance: A one-sword style used for defense and counterattacks.
- Water Stance: Dual wielding with extreme speed, allowing him to fight multiple enemies at once.
- Wind Stance: Wield a single sword and magecraft together. Best for fighting nonhuman enemies, from monsters to Servants.
- Fire Stance: A dual sword technique that, while slow, boasts powerful destructive force. This stance shows its true strength in difficult situations, growing faster and fiercer as HP decreases.
- Void Stance: A vigorous technique that uses lightning fast iai strikes to cut down any enemy in its path. Though this stance boasts great power, it leaves a greater opening between attacks as HP decreases.
Valor Strikes[]
Valor Strikes are powerful sword strikes that Iori can use when the Valor Gauge is full. In gameplay, they are functionally like his version of a Noble Phantasm.
- Onefold Path of Light: A special single-sword technique. Takes a large step forward to deliver a fearsome thrusting attack. Usable in Earth and Wind Stances.
- Tread the Twofold Realm: A special dual-sword technique. Raises both sword together to preform a horizontal slash. Usable in Water, Fire, and Void Stances.
- Tsubame Gaeshi Hiyoku no Dan: A special dual-sword technique, learned from his master's rival. Uses both sword to unleash six simultaneous slashes. Usable in Void Stance.
Magecraft[]
Iori was taught Jewel Magecraft by the Crimson Codex. He specializes in flame attacks, and erroneously believes it to be ninjutsu.[3]

Development[]
Summer Musashi mentioning Iori in Grand Order's Las Vegas event was meant to be a tease for Samurai Remnant, which had already begun production by that time.[14]
Iori is also the name of the companion of the fictional character Musashi, a fictional anime series called Magical☆Warrior Musashi featured in Fate/kaleid liner PRISMA☆ILLYA.
Creation and Conception[]
Miyamoto Iori's character setting was by Kinoko Nasu and Hikaru Sakurai. He was designed by Rei Wataru in Fate/Samurai Remnant.[3] Early on the only information that Wataru was told about Iori when designing him was that Musashi would steal his name at one point. He struggled with a design until Takashi Takeuchi provided some reference pictures. Iori had many design revisions because he is the face of the game, and Wataru struggled with how much he was willing to compromise on his design, unlike how with the other Masters' designs he had more freedom. Iori's initial design drafts were much more flashy but he was given his current simple outfit to blend in more naturally with Edo's ordinary life.[15]
Iori wasn't planned to be the main character at first, or even a Master. Originally he was one of Koei Tecmo's requested Servants, but when Nasu saw Iori on their list of requests he said that they would only do Iori if he was the protagonist. Takeuchi believes that Nasu had a vague approximation of Iori's character before this, and it was fleshed out while working on Samurai Remnant.[15]
Reception[]
Takeuchi thinks that it is "very sexy" that Iori has overcome more uphill battles against Servants than any other Fate protagonist.[14] Takeuchi also calls Iori a very special character to him because the decision to make him the protagonist is what defined Fate/Samurai Remnant.[15] Rei Wataru calls Iori "my boy".[15]
