Modern Magecraft (現代魔術, Gendai Majutsu?) is a classification of magecraft pertaining to a present day, broad overview of magecraft, contrasting the anachronistic views of older magus lineages. The study of it is Modern Magecraft Theory (現代魔術論, Gendai Majutsu-ron?), studied under the Clock Tower's Department of Modern Magecraft Theory and the California Convention.
The field of Modern Magecraft should not be confused with the term "modern magecraft" designating all of current Magecraft, which began when the Age of Gods ended.[1]
Characteristics[]
The rise of Modern Magecraft started at the end of the 19th century,[2] as a result of the Industrial RevolutionWP.[3] It consists of the magecraft of the past centuries summarized as a broader, shallower, more general magecraft that is "easier to use" and adapted to modern society.[4] As such, it tends to encompass forms of magecraft of relatively shallow histories,[5] with the most recent form of magecraft known to be made popular being Chaos MagicWP or Chaos Magecraft, which began in West YorkshireWP, Britain, in the 1970s.[6]
Techniques in Modern Magecraft are often extremely specialized, so many components have to be pulled from beyond it.[7] For example, Chaos Magecraft collects the strong points of various styles of magecraft and combines them into a single art,[8] and it's not just limited to magecraft, but philosophy, theoretical science, and even science fiction are all drawn in, for the purpose of allowing the magus to access the "beyond", in order to bring about all sorts of paranormal phenomena. This leads to accusation that Modern Magecraft doesn't understand the history or complex ways the depths of different magecrafts meld together, and just steals a taste of everything and mashes together the parts that taste good.[6] Also, Chaos Magecraft itself is brittle, as the reality was that properly codifying those strengths of other styles into workable spells is a difficult endeavor.[6][8]
Modern Magecraft also tends to borrow from scientific theories such as nuclear physics,[9] quantum theory,[10] bioelectricity,[11] and heliocentrism,[12] among others.
Besides Chaos Magecraft, other things in the category of Modern Magecraft includes mesmerismWP,[13] the modern variant of elementary suggestion, Galvanism,[11] and Internet Magecraft (ネット魔術, Netto Majutsu?), Modern Magecraft utilizing the internet to facilitate it.[14]
