Mori NagayoshiWP (森長可?), Class Name Berserker (バーサーカー, Bāsākā?), is the Berserker-class Servant of Major Matou in the Imperial Capital Holy Grail Strange Story of Fate/KOHA-ACE, and the Servant of Major Magatsu in its remake Fate/type Redline. He is also summoned by Ritsuka Fujimaru in the Grand Orders of Fate/Grand Order.
Profile[]
Identity[]
Nicknamed Demon Musashi (鬼武蔵, Oni Musashi?). A warrior from the Warring States Period, the son of Mori Yoshinari from the Oda clan, and the elder brother of the famous Mori Naritoshi (Ranmaru) who served as Nobunaga's attendant. A brave warrior who's earned the nickname "Oni Musashi" for his many military exploits and the spearmanship that was taught to him by his father who was famed as "Sanza the Attacker”.
As a person with an extremely volatile temperament, he had furiously cut down a checkpoint guard, after being asked to dismount and state his family name, saying “What are you trying to do making this Katsuzou (Mori Nagayoshi) dismount; how could there be such ignorance in the presence of Lord Nobunaga?”, forcing his way past the checkpoint and threatening to set fire to the town if anyone tried to stop him. When he reached a bridge immediately after that, he was asked to dismount, and furiously cut down (et cetera) and there were no shortages of such anecdotes. By the way, the person who gave the order to dismount and state the family name is none other than Lord Nobunaga himself. But he was somehow forgiven.
Nobunaga: — — — "There’s no helping it, since it’s Oni Musashi”
Galloping through the world in the Sengoku Era as the epitome of insolence, Nagayoshi was nonetheless killed at a young age when hit by a bullet during the Battle of Komaki and Nagakute. At that time, it was said that both friend and foe rejoiced, yet such a tale's veracity is questionable.
Appearance[]
Mori is a large man, towering over every other character in the story. Appearing in a technologically advanced suit of tan and red armor provided by the military, it has several distinct features, most notably several thick cables hanging from the upper back and a large, bucket-like helmet that completely encases his head, six horizontal slits aligned in two vertical columns serving as his means of seeing out. Beneath the armor, he wears a suit of deep green.
After losing his helmet, it is revealed that he is a fairly young looking man with spiky crimson hair swept backwards, his fringe normally hanging in front of one of his eyes.
Personality[]
Mori Nagayoshi was known for having a very violent temper and ruthless behavior in combat, leading to his nickname. Decapitating 27 by himself in his first battle, he painted the lower half of his armour pure red with the spilt blood of his fallen foes in the Battle of Takato during the Kōshū Conquest, to the point where his allies mistakenly thought he suffered severe wounds, boasting exceptional valor while demonstrating excessive brutality. To put it more clearly, it would be dangerous to even look or talk to him, and he’s the sort of person with whom one should avoid eye contact, even if you met him on the streets.
On the other hand, he is outstanding in his flawless management of his territory. There is also an erudite side to him, in his appreciation of tea and calligraphy. What the heck is wrong with you.
In any case, while Nagayoshi’s life is filled with nonsensical anecdotes of gratuitous violence, he has never leveled his spear at his liege even once in his entire life. Even now, when he is summoned as a Servant, he is single-mindedly loyal towards his recognized Master, in the same vein as his lieges, and there is absolutely no need for concern regarding betrayal.
However, whether that very sense of loyalty would take form in accordance with the Master’s wishes, remains to be seen….
Relationships[]
- Mori Ranmaru
- “My little brother Ranmaru? Yeah, Naritoshi was Ootono's favorite. He was too attentive to minor stuff, but he was my cute little brother. He died at Ōtono's side for one reason or another, but well, that's a preferable way of dyin'. Not like me!”[5]
- "Oh, that’s the little brother I brag ‘bout! He was a hunky just like me, and Ootono was pretty fond of him somehow. But hey, he died along our Ootono, so I think he had a good life."[1]
- Oda Nobunaga (Archer)
- "Oh! If it ain’t Ootono! It’s gonna be fun to fight again under Ootono! Whoops, now my lord ain’t Ootono, but Master... Huh? Then ain’t she my enemy? Fuhahahahahaha! How interestin’!"[5]
- The #1 Lord during his lifetime. Haha! He can’t thank his Ootono enough for looking after Naritoshi. But, he surprisingly still doesn’t behave that well around her. Perhaps Nobbu still has a soft spot for the Mori Clan, letting them do whatever they want. Maybe it’s because of their unique qualities.
- Oda Nobunaga (Swimsuit)
- "What the hell, Ootono!? What's with that getup!? A swimsuit? You swim in that? Eh? Sing? On a stage? Uwahahahahahahahahahaha! What the hell!? That's totally the opposite of wabi... Simplicity!"[5]
- Chacha
- "If it ain’t Chacha-sama? It’s been a while! How’s Your Highness, Your Highness? Ah, he ain’t here. It’d be funnier if Ootono and Your Highness were here. I was interested in seein’ who’d win between Ootono and Your Highness"[5]
- "Hey, if it isn't Chacha-sama, how’s she goin’? Ah, she died? Hahaha, I went ahead hahahah but I heard she cracked up after my death. Still, to make that Chacha-sama laugh, I’m pretty good, ain’t I?!"
- Akechi Mitsuhide
- “Akechi? Ah, that treacherous and solemn bastard. Betrayal's really shitty, a disgrace for warriors! Well, he was decent at tea ceremonies, though”[5]
- "Treason is always crap but hahaha, I can’t believe he got killed that easily hahaha. Guess tea ceremony preparation is all that bastard is good for hahahah!"
- Toyotomi Hideyoshi
- The #2 Lord during his lifetime. Even he isn't a match for His Highness that has risen atop even the very person who ruled the entire country! But he also wouldn’t listen to a single word from him. The Hideyoshi Clan also had the same soft spot as the Oda’s, so they would never close the net. He really was allowed to do whatever he wanted.
- Nagao Kagetora
- "Echigo's war idiot, huh. Tch, that woman really pisses me off but I gotta admit she really's strong. I mean, I didn't know she was a woman. Ah right right, it's the same with Ootono, but strong women rise my defeat points."[5]
- "Well, if it isn't the Warfool of Echigo hahaha. Listen, battles are to be won hahaha ー Huh? She was practically undefeatable in battle? Heh... not too shabby."
- Miyamoto Musashi
- "Yer Musashi? Eh, what a coincidence. I’m Musashi too. Musashi’s Musashi but I’m Oni Musashi. Rich of me to say it, but there’s quite a lot of Musashi so it’s easy to get mixed up"[5]
- "What are the odds, Udon lady, I’m also called Musashi. Well, I’ve got the demon tacked on there. Sounds like there's plenty of Musashis aside from me around, that’s no good."
- Li Shuwen (Old Assassin)
- "Hey! That geezer over there! Did I meet ya somewhere... Ah no, must be my imagination, you don’t even have a spear... I somehow felt like you stabbed me in the head a long time ago... My bad my bad, let me make some tea as an apology"[5]
- Okita Souji
- "Okita? Ah, that li'l girl. I feel like I remember havin' seen yer sword. No, I don't mean at this war. It's more like, as if you stabbed me in the heart."[5]
Role[]
Fate/KOHA-ACE[]
He was summoned instead of Major Matou's intended Heroic Spirit, Miyamoto Musashi. After being summoned Berserker is initially restrained in a lab in Demon Archer's compound.[6] He eventually is released and begins to rampage through the compound, cutting off Shinji's arm to remove the threat of Command Spells in the process and then carrying him while slaughtering guards.[7]
Encountering Lancer and his master, the two battle, Lancer gaining the upper hand after splitting Berserker's helmet and piercing his head, seemingly killing him. However, his armour revives him, and activating his Noble Phantasm, he catches Lancer off guard. However, before their fight can reach a conclusion, Berserker is struck from behind by Sakura Saber.[8]
Fighting both Lancer and Saber together, Saber confronts Berserker with her Lightless, Three-Stage Thrust, piercing clear through Berserker's heart. Unable to recover, Berserker fades away.[9]

Fate/type Redline[]
Day 3[]
Mori is first seen inside a tank where he is kept in an Imperial Japanese Army base.[26] He is later seen being released from his tank by his Master,[27] Major Reiji Magatsu, who orders him to bring Archer's head to him.[28] However, the first thing he does is slaughter the soldiers guarding his containment. Before his Master can use his Command Seals to make Mori kill himself, Mori cuts off his Master's right arm and then crushes it with his bare hand. Terrified and confused, Major Magatsu asks him if he truly is Miyamoto Musashi, but Mori corrects him and says he's the "Oni Musashi". He then carries his Master with him and continues to kill more soldiers on his way out of the facility.[29][30]
Abilities[]
Although Li Shuwen considers Mori Nagayoshi a quite strong opponent,[7] Major Reiter states that she doesn't believe even the combined efforts of Mori and Okada Izou could take Oda Nobunaga down.[31] Oryou also believes that Mori doesn't compare to Sakamoto Ryouma at all, and that he wouldn't like to see her when she is angry.[14]
Combat[]
Mori was fast enough to react to a surprise attack from Li Shuwen (Old Assassin) aimed at Ritsuka Fujimaru. Thanks to his great bulk, he was able to shield Ritsuka from the attack, although it was in exchange for taking severe damage, which made him feel as if his insides were about to become his outsides. Li and Mori keep fighting until Ritsuka orders Mori to withdraw, and Li decides to join them.[11] Although Mori Nagayoshi is unable to dodge Maeda Setanta's strikes, by working together with Chaldea's Oda Nobunaga, the two of them manage to beat him. This isn't without Mori taking great injuries.[12] Kakizaki Sitonai was also able to beat down Mori rather easily. She ordered Heracles and Shirou to finish him off, but thanks to Nobunaga's arrival, her and Mori defeat Sitonai's team.[15]
Although he is capable of handling High Priest Makuzu's Heretical Warrior Monks if he is allowed to act freely, he can't while under the pressure of God of Makuzu's Magical Energy. Despite the priest claiming that even greatest Heroic Spirit would be helpless in the face of Lord Makuzu's power, Mori is able to move slightly. The priest is impressed by this.[16]
Type A Spirit Limiter Device[]
Mori is sometimes equipped with the Type A Spirit Limiter Device (甲型英霊拘束具?) (localized as "Heroic Spirit Restraint Armor Type A"), a Heroic Spirit Restraint Armor supposed to give the Master complete control over any Servant imprisoned inside it.[7][13] Theoretically, the armor can control any Heroic Spirit perfectly, but in practice, the subject's mental state can have a significant effect on that control. The restraints fare worst on Berserkers and those with the Mental Corruption skill. Due to this, Mori is able to act freely while wearing it, ignoring his Master's orders.[13] The armor was initially created during the Imperial Capital Holy Grail Strange Story,[6] however, during the Sengoku Singularity, Maxwell's Demon is able to recreate it so that Kaiser Nobunaga can keep him under control.[13]
Mori can't see really well with his helmet on.[30] Furthermore, he has stated on multiple occasions that the armor slows him down. Because of this, he can't land a hit on Nagao Kagetora.[10][13] Kagetora doesn't even bat an eye at his surprise attack.[10] Similarly, Okita Souji is able to hold her own evenly in close range combat with Mori without wearing her Coat of Oaths.[9] Although the likes of Li Shuwen (Old Lancer) and Nagao Kagetora have been shown to be capable of easily splitting open Mori Nagayoshi's head with their respective weapons, they were unable to kill him due to the regeneration provided by the armor.[8][10]
Despite Mori Nagayoshi not being a Heroic Spirit known for being immortal,[10] this armor allows him to absorb Magical Energy from the land, enabling him to heal from even fatal injuries.[8][10][32] If he takes too much magical energy, he would eventually destroy the land, killing all the inhabitants.[8][32] And fighting on top of a Ley Line makes him practically invincible.[32] In Fate/type Redline, Major Magatsu notes that the initial plan was to drop him into enemy territory to make use of these abilities.[32] To defeat him, his entire body must be destroyed in a single blow alongside his armor.[8][10] Li Shuwen states that due to not possessing an Anti-Army Noble Phantasm, he cannot defeat Mori.[8] Oda Nobunaga once destroyed his armor completely with her true Three Line Formation by going all out, however, she didn't kill him. Nevertheless, having been depleted of magical energy and being a Berserker without a contract, he would have died right there had it not been for Ritsuka Fujimaru making a contract with him.[10] It is also possible to defeat Mori by destroying the core of his armor first.[9] Okita Souji accomplished this by activating both her Coat of Oaths and Lightless, Three-Stage Thrust Noble Phantasms, killing him with a single blow.[9]
Mori Nagayoshi was able to react to Tanaka Shinbei's Noble Phantasm and shield Mysterious Ranmaru X with his own body. Mori survived the blow, however, the amount of damage he took was so great that he couldn't move afterward for the rest of the fight. Oryou claims that Mori's Saint Graph was on the verge of collapsing from that wound. Furthermore, since Ritsuka Fujimaru was using a lot of Magical Energy just keeping Mori around, it was up to Oryou to heal him with her saliva.[19]
Mori was capable of reacting to and blocking a surprise attack of Oryou under the influence of Lancer Ryouma. Izumo-no-Okuni's Zanzaburou and him then manage to overpower Oryou in combat, although they don't deal any damage due to her inherent divine toughness.[21]
Skills[]
Class Skills[]
- Mad Enhancement (D Rank): While possessing an affinity with the Lancer and Rider classes as well as the Berserker class, he is invariably affected by Mad Enhancement, regardless of the class he is summoned in, curiously enough.
Personal Skills[]
- Mental Pollution (Wicked) (B Rank): Abnormal mentality exhibited on the battlefield. It becomes difficult to communicate with everyone, including the Master, and behaves recklessly. Cruelty is intensified, and he will fight until the enemy is killed or he dies.[1] Mori Nagayoshi is immune to mind control abilities like his own Heroic Spirit Restraint Armor Type A or Ama-no-Sakagami's black smoke.[13][19]
- Bloodsoaked Recklessness (A Rank): A Skill derived from an anecdote that the hakama is dyed red with blood. A Skill from the sanguinary tale of his, in which he stained his clothing in the blood of fallen foes. Granting increasing offensive power as he continually attack the enemy, this skill lowers his defensive capacity in exchange.[1]
- Will of the Daredevil Warrior (C Rank): Different effects are activated at two times, when the Skill is used and when it becomes impossible to fight. A doubtful anecdote said he enjoyed it when not only enemies but also when allies lost their lives.[1]
Noble Phantasms[]
Mori's Noble Phantasm is Ningen Mukotsu, a spear that cuts through armor like tissue paper. He was able to catch Nagao Kagetora off-guard with it, injuring her enough so that the two of them could fight evenly, despite her evading all his blows previously.[10] He also used it against Li Shuwen (Old Lancer) as a surprise attack, injuring his arm.[8] During the Showa Restoration Singularity, Mori's Noble Phantasm cut through Arahabaki's armor with ease, allowing Mysterious Ranmaru X to retrieve Nobunaga's head.[25] However, even Kagetora and Mori working together are unable to do anything to Shibata Katsuie empowered by the Demon King Nobunaga's Magical Energy. Mori states that Ningen Mukotsu has no effect on him.[14] This Noble Phantasm was also unable to even scratch God of Makuzu.[17]
If he was summoned in the Lancer or Rider classes, he would also gain access to One Hundred Steps, his favored horse.
Development[]
Creation and Conception[]
Mori Nagayoshi was illustrated by Dd in Fate/Grand Order. His scenario writer is Keikenchi in Fate/Grand Order.[1]
Comment from Illustrator[]
"I love all three ascensions equally, because all of them were made under my esteemed Takeuchi-sensei and Keikenchi-sensei’s supervision. The mad warrior feeling of the first and third one is pretty good, isn’t it? I liked the ideas so much, that just thinking about them again with this memo makes my heart burst. Battle-types are always the best, and as a fan, I couldn't be more grateful. Thank you so much!" (Dd)[1]
