Nagato Tohsaka (遠坂 永人, Tōsaka Nagato?) is the first head of the Tohsaka family and one of the founders of the Fuyuki Holy Grail War.

Background[]
Nagato was the head of the Tohsaka family around the 1790s.[2][3] Though the Tohsaka family of the time were traditionally hidden ChristiansWP practicing despite the ban on ChristianityWP, Nagato and his clan came upon the world of sorcery after "strange old man appeared out of nowhere and led them astray.".[2][4] Nagato first encountered Kischur Zelretch Schweinorg during a journey, and for having picked up the hotel bill, Zelretch taught Nagato something of magecraft. Though Nagato was officially viewed as a pupil, it was more of Nagato being a "follower whom he looked out for every now and then" in Zelretch's eyes.[4][5]

While originally attempting to reach the root through martial arts, Nagato was contacted by Zouken Makiri and Justeaze Lizrich von Einzbern as a means of utilizing the Tohsaka land in Fuyuki for the ritual, although his daughter was more useful in the actual construction of the Greater Grail.[2] Though originally planning to utilize the Holy Grail together, the three families had a falling out and became opponents in the ritual after realizing only one could utilize it.[6] Nagato was entrusted with the plans to the Jeweled Sword of Zelretch despite being mediocre compared to the talented Einzberns and Makiris due to being good at heart. Zelretch thought that "this House will probably never accomplish anything great, but at least they will never stray from the righteous path". Entrusting the design to Nagato, he said, "alright, it will be a struggle, but work towards this goal". Throughout the following generations, the family "stubbornly followed" the teachings, and Rin Tohsaka finally "accomplished the impossible."[7]
Personality[]
Nagato is described as "mediocre, cold, and bipolar", holding himself in a way to make even Zelretch exclaim, "Hey, are you crazy or something?". Compared to the "fundamentally evil" Einzberns and Makiris, Nagato was considered good at heart, "willing to sacrifice himself for a better future.".[7] Much like his descendant, Rin Tohsaka, he was "prone to goofing up." Holding favorable positions with the Church due to their religion and the Mage's Association due to being disciples of a magician, their family was in an enviable position, allowing for their appointment as the managers of Fuyuki due to the connections.[2]

Nagato appears in the Heaven's Feel movie adaptation in a flashback to when he, Zolgen, Justeaze, and Zelretch performed the ritual to turn Justeaze into the Greater Grail.[8]
Abilities[]
Nagato was not particularly talented in the ways of magecraft, his daughter holding the true talent and being more useful in constructing the Greater Grail than Nagato.[2] While considered to be one of the rare few talented pupils of Zelretch who managed to undergo training without being harmed by Zelretch's normally crippling training, he was actually neither a "pupil of a Magician", those who will be turned into wrecks, or a "pupil of a magus", those who will come out of Zelretch's training without harm. The level of their relationship was distant from Zelretch's perspective, akin to him being a "supervising teacher who is observing the students doing experiments from afar."[4][5] He was considered mediocre and the least talented amongst Zelretch's pupils, but his demeanor allowed Zelretch to trust him with the "homework" of the Jeweled Sword of Zelretch plans.[7]
Nagato viewed magecraft and martial arts as equal paths, originally attempting to reach the root through a state of mushinWP before encountering the Einzberns and Makiri.[2] He later began to seek to use the Holy Grail for that purpose instead.[4]

The Tohsaka family head during the very first Holy Grail War, two hundred years ago.
He took part in the ritual at the request of Makiri Zouken and Justeaze.
Though traditionally the Tohsaka were a clan of secret Christians, one day a strange old man appeared out of nowhere and led them astray. Ever since then, they have devoted themselves to the world of sorcery.
With their contacts in the Holy Church and favorable treatment from the Association as disciples of a magician, they are in an enviable position.
It is due to their connections with both organizations that they were appointed the managers of Fuyuki.
At any rate, Nagato viewed sorcery and martial arts as equal, and was attempting to reach the Root via a state of mushin (no-mind) when he was recruited by the Einzberns and Makiri.
As you might expect from Rin's ancestor, he was prone to goofing up. Also, it seems that his daughter was the one with talent for sorcery, and ended up being far more useful in the construction of the Great Holy Grail than her father was.遠坂永人【人名】

In the 1790s, the Einzbern and Matou landed in Japan to fulfill their plan. Then, they proceeded with the preparations of the First Holy Grail war over the course of 10 years.
1800s - The First Holy Grail War
The first Holy Grail War. The rules were not laid out properly, and the Masters' sense of being “participants” was weak. Because there were no Command Spells as in the present, the Servants did not comply with orders, and so the rest of the ritual failed. The Descent of the Holy Grail was at Ryūdō temple.
1860s - The Second Holy Grail War
In light of the failure of the First, the ritual was held only after detailed rules were developed. The so-called "Command Spell System” was perfected/completed, so that it became possible for the Master to enslave the Servant, though the War was a failure. The Descent of the Holy Grail was at the Tōsaka Residence.
1930s - The Third Holy Grail War
Held on the eve of WWII. There were battles over the Lesser Grail with the Imperial Army and the Nazis as well, and the fighting unfolded in the Imperial Capital, but the Lesser Grail was destroyed and the ritual failed. The evocation site of the Grail was at Fuyuki Church. Angra Mainyu was taken in and the Greater Grail was contaminated.
1990s - The Fourth Holy Grail War
2000s - The Fifth Holy Grail War
Events told in "Fate / stay night", the latest and final battle.
2010s - The taking apart of the Holy Grail War.
Ten years after the Fifth War. Lord Emelloi II (real name, Waver Velvet. One of the Masters of the Fourth War) arrived in Fuyuki and together with the head of the Tohsaka line, set out to completely take apart the Great Grail. The Association was planning on bring back the Greater Grail, so the two sides were completely opposed. After the end of the great turmoil of the same magnitude as the Grail War, the Greater Grail was completely dismantled. The Grail Wars of Fuyuki came to a complete conclusion here.１７９０年頃 - 聖杯戦争の準備

Family head of the Tohsaka during the original planning of the Holy Grail War. He studied under Zelretch as a mage apprentice and dreamt of attaining the Root through the Holy Grail. Also, he was a Christian despite it being banned in the Japan at that time.
Witness, “Wizard Marshall” Kischua Zelretch Schweinorg
One of the only five True Magicians in the world. Zelretch served as the witness during the creation of the Greater Grail. He is an old man with many nicknames. He has been referred to as “Wizard Marshall”, “(Zelretch ) Of the Jewel”, “Kaleidoscope”, “Old Man Time” and many other names. The 5 phenomenon that cannot be achieved through sorcery or science are called “True Magic”, and those individuals who can invoke these are called “True Magicians”. Zelretch once fought the existence known as “Crimson Moon”. Although emerging victorious (draw?), he paid a heavy price. As a result of this engagement, he became severely aged, and his powers diminished. And it was also at that time, he was bitten by the Crimson Moon and turned into a vampire. His name was entered into the list of “The 27 Dead Apostle Ancestors”, which documents powerful vampires.
The Magic which Zelretch wields is something called “The Second Magic”, and through this Magic he can freely stroll through many parallel worlds. He is a complicated and weird guy with a personality that “rages at evil and laughs at good”. He is a powerful existence who is surprisingly meddlesome in worldly affairs, and frequently sparks conflicts. A troublesome figure indeed.
In the Association, becoming “a pupil of Zelretch” is synonymous to being turned into a complete wreck. Tohsaka Nagato is one of the few rare talented ones that returned without a scratch after becoming the pupil of Zelretch.
Not only a True Magician, but also the pinnacle of magi, this is the “Wizard Marshall” Zelretch. His physique is strong and tough. His demeanour can certainly be called “old but not out”.遠坂 永人

Nagato could not even be called a "pupil of a magus".
