Napoleon BonaparteWP (ナポレオン・ボナパルトWP, Napoléon Bonaparte?), Class Name Archer (アーチャー, Āchā?), is an Archer-class Servant summoned by Ritsuka Fujimaru in the Grand Orders of Fate/Grand Order.

Profile[]

Identity[]

A version different from the historical human of the same name. Rather than being directly based on Napoleon's life, his existence is drawn from the legends told about Napoleon and his symbolic role in the history of France.

The man of possibilities. The idol of a hero created by his people's expectations. The first emperor of France. He had reached and conquered most of Europe during his reign, but it eventually fell. His life of ups and downs were not dependent on his own desires and abilities, but rather it was led by his people's desires.[1]

ーーAt least, that is how the "Throne of Heroes" defines the Heroic Spirit Napoleon's existence as such.[1]

Therefore, he always acts as a man who responds to "someone's desires". While alive, he was to "respond to expectations and wishes". Following a lot of support, he established himself as emperor. He came back once again from Elba when the voices of the longing of an emperor increased, yet he fell back when people denied him as emperor.[1]

On one day, the word "impossible" was no longer in his dictionary. On one day, he met Iskandar in a pyramid. On one day, he destroyed the Great Sphinx of Giza by bombardment. On one day, it was said the French Revolution was a conspiracy between secret societies, and he was deeply involved in it.[1]

In the past, Alexandre Dumas' father, Thomas, served under Napoleon Bonaparte as a general. The said father was killed by Napoleon over policy dispute and his ethnic background, being a child of a marquis and a black woman. This left Dumas and his mother in poverty, due to being denied army pension. Napoleon was seen at least twice by Dumas.[2]

Appearance[]

Napoleon is a tall and muscular man. His appearance is different from his self in history. His third ascension outfit seems to be based on the Template:W oil painting Template:W done by Template:W in 1801. It is stated that if he was summoned as a Rider, his height would decrease.[1]

Personality[]

The Heroic Spirit Napoleon responds to expectations and wishes, responds to desires, and accomplishes what needs to be done. He affirms every Napoleonic legend, and he will always be there as a Servant who embodies the possibilities of man (primate). The man who lived a life of responding continuously had made a lot of impossibilities possible, as was said in the legends that "Napoleon would do that much". Some may even call him some kind of superhuman.[1]

The Dandy of Possibilities. A hero who fights in secret while shouldering the hopes and expectations of the masses. In response to those feelings, he carries out what must be done.

He isn't fixated on the matters relating to his self from back when he was alive. Corsica, Paris, Waterloo. They are all events that have already passed. 'I, who materialized as a Servant and had even my appearance changed compared to the one during my lifetime, am the idol called Napoleon Bonaparte and not a ghost tied down by the past─────' That's what he thinks. If people have dreamed a lot about 'Napoleon', then there is nothing to do, but to live up to those dreams. With an unwavering conviction, he devotes his body and soul to the people living in the present and the future.

By the way. In the Scandinavian Lostbelt, Napoleon said he decided to fall in love with one woman every time he manifested, but...it is unclear whether the Napoleon in Chaldea would do the same, so the current Napoleon's speech and conduct will need to be observed carefully to ascertain this.

A habitual smoker. He likes pipes too, but the one he prefers smoking even now is the Spanish cigar (Spanish tobacco) that he loved best while he was alive.

An avid reader. On the battlefield or inside a moving carriage, in any case, if he had the time, he would always be reading a book, but if he found it boring he would immediately throw it away (even if it was through the window of a carriage).

Bad with dogs. It is said that Napoleon was bitten by his wife Josephine's dog, Fortune when he was entering her bed. By the way, the dog was a pug. "I'd rather not deal with pugs."

The person he admired during his lifetime was Iskandar. It is also said that one of the reasons for his interest in conquering Egypt was because of 'Iskandar's influence'.[3]

Attitude towards the Master[]

Did you really say that the word impossible doesn't exist in your dictionary?

Did you really destroy the Sphinx in Gisa with a bombardment?

If the Master were to ask about the Napoleonic legends, generally, he would be happy. And then he would get a distant look in his eyes for a brief second as if he was reminiscing about something and say the following:

'Come, let's create new legends.'

'If possible, glorious legends that everyone would wish for.'

Relationships[]

Iskandar / Alexander
"The real Iskandar... Is it really Alexander the Great!? Aw shucks, you got me there. Finally...he's neither a mirage nor an illusion. I'm finally face-to-face with the man himself!"[4]
The figure he admires.
It seems like he encountered the phantom of the great king when he entered the great pyramid.[3]
Marie Antoinette
" Hm? What!? Queen Marie Antoinette!? What a surprise...! Hmmm, I see... The symbol of royal authority...the White Lily...so that's what it means... I may not be the right person to say such a thing, but...yeah, it must have been tough."[4]
He has his thoughts about the violence and tragedy that struck her, Louis XVI and their children.
However, since he wasn't involved with the French central during then, there is nothing he can say...feeling so, he's becoming tongue-tied.[3]
Charles-Henri Sanson
"Sanson! Is he THE Sanson, Monsieur of Paris!? Ah...what a coincidental meeting, er... You know, that guy never addressed me as "Your Majesty.""[4]
A person towards whom he feels reverence.[3]
King of the Cavern
"The count of Monte Cristo... I see, Edmond Dantès... No, I'll go see him later, since it might start a serious exchange of fire. I didn't save him from imprisonment. Naturally, he must despise me. Huh? The guy here now isn't the kind of person who would come and attack me? Really?"[4]
Napoleon is the reason behind his incarceration.
And then, he didn't save him. In that case, Napoleon assumes he would definitely be a subject of his hatred, however...[3]
Achilles / Hector / Paris / Penthesilea
"Ah...ohhh! The hero of the Trojan War!Wonderful! I love the "Iliad!""[4]
For Napoleon who liked the "Illiad", they are legendary heroes and subjects of his admiration. He would like to get their autographs.[3]
James Moriarty
"Hey old man! Yeah, you! I hear that you have an interesting nickname. Something about being the "yours truly of crime." Hahaha! So in all seriousness... What kind of person are you really?"[4]
"How did it go again? The what of crime?"[3]
Scáthach-Skadi
The materialized Napoleon is quietly listening to her reminiscence.[3]

Role[]

Fate/Grand Order[]

Götterdämmerung: Eternal Ice-Flame Century[]

Napoleon is summoned into the Norse Lostbelt by Ophelia's wish for a hero to come save her more than by the Counter Force.[5] Some time afterwards, he encountered someone who seemed to be a normal human, yet knew all about life in the Lostbelt. This man told Napoleon about many aspects of the Lostbelt, and even hinted at Brynhildr's summoning by reciting her legend. He also told Napoleon that he was trying to discover why the Earth was blankened.[6] Eventually, Napoleon came to Scáthach-Skadi's castle, where he met Skadi, Ophelia, and Sigurd. He proposed to Ophelia, but she refused.[7] He then left, promising to give her a gift to show his feelings are true.[8]

Guided by Huginn and Muninn,[7] he first meets Ritsuka and Mash at Village 23, and helps them stop the Envoys from enacting the Ritual of Ordainment, the sacrificing of adults. After the Envoys retreat, he introduces himself.[9] Joining Ritsuka and Mash, he reveals the identity of the Lostbelt King as Scáthach Skadi. He suspects they'll find Ophelia, Sigurd, the Paper Moon, and learn Fantasy Tree Sombrero's location at her castle.[10]

The group enters the castle through an underground. They reach the throne room, where they meet Skadi. She refuses to divulge the Sombrero’s location, and orders Thrud to capture the group. They fight when Ophelia and Sigurd enter. Ophelia orders Sigurd to neutralize the group, later ascending his Spirit Origin. She also uses her Mystic Eye to slow Mash by reversing Ortenaus’ output. Before the fight can go any longer though, Skadi orders Ophelia to stop. She then immobilizes them with her runes when Caenis appears. She tries to kill Ritsuka, but Napoleon stops her. She tries to attack him when Sigurd stops her in accordance with Skadi’s decree that killing in the castle is prohibited. She then delivers a message from Kirschtaria. Following the message, Caenis leaves, and the group are put in the dungeon.[7]

In their cell, Ritsuka and Napoleon form a temporary contract. Ritsuka suddenly collapses, which is when Sitonai appears in the cell.[11] After they wake up, Sitonai reveals she materialized the same time as Napoleon, but she was found and imprisoned by Skadi. She then reveals Sigurd is a Servant from the Proper History, at least his Spirit Origin is. He has the Paper Moon, and he knows Sombrero’s location since he’s always with Ophelia. Sitonia then reveals there is another goddess from the Proper History that can help the group oppose Sigurd. After giving their location, she opens the cell door, and conceals the group so they can escape.[12]

The group escape the castle when they're confronted by Koyanskaya. They breakthrough her giants and escape.[12] They eventually reach GaldhøpiggenWP, the location of the goddess Sitonai mentioned. At its peak, they find a ice castle surrounded by magical flames acting as a barrier. As they contemplate on how to bypass it, Fantasy Tree Seeds crash down and attack them. Napoleon shoots one with enough force that it crashes into the castle. It is thrown out and destroyed by the castle's occupant, Brynhildr.[13] Napoleon flirts with her, which prompts Brynhildr to cast an illusion him on him after learning he already proposed to Ophelia. Napoleon tries to embrace her, only for it to be a pile of snow. After he recovers, the group stop at Village 67 on their way to Village 23. They learn someone made its Bounded Field stronger. Goredolf Musik then informs them that Village 23 is under attack.[14]

They reach the village by nightfall to find it safe, learning from Gelda that someone claiming to be from Chaldea possibly saved it. Its Bounded Field was repaired; Napoleon deduces its former tear attracted the giants. He also realizes his, Ritsuka, and Mash's fight against the Envoys was why it was damaged.[14]

The next morning, the Border comes under attack from Valkyries, so the group rush over there. After fending them off, they're confronted by Thrud, Hildr, and Ortlinde, the bases for the mass-produced Valkyries. Napoleon defends Brynhildr from her sisters' word about having no issue with killing them, saying she doesn't want to kill anyone. He continues that a warrior carries the burden and responsibility of every life they take. Brynhildr concurs, saying that is how a true hero conducts themselves. She realizes her sisters forgotten that after spending years in a world without heroes, and deems no longer fit to be called valkyries. She kills Thrud and Hildr following a battle, while Ortlinde reteats.[15]

As it's dangerous to keep driving during the night, the Border stops in Torsby before continuing towards Skadi's castle tomorrow. During this time, Napoleon tells Ritsuka in their room that they'll have to take the responsibility for making Brynhidlr kill Sigurd again. Though, he suspects Brynhildr knew she was summoned to kill Sigurd. He then apologizes for saying he was the only hero of humanity in the Lostbelt, something he thought was true since he never met saw another Servant after he materialized. That was until he met Sitonia and Byrnhildr. He blames his source for giving him bad info, but realizes his source's recital of Brynhildr's legend was a hint about her materialization. He refuses to tell Ritsuka who his source is, having promised to keep it a secret. Though he didn't get a good look at him, Napoleon describes his source as looking like a normal human, yet knowing all about life in the Lostbelt. He suspects it was him that strengthened the villages' Bounded Fields.[6]

Returning to Skadi's castle, the group fight Sigurd and Ortlinde. Brynhildr realizes Sigurd is stronger than usual, so she activates a primordial rune to empower herself at the risk of burning her soul away. However, Ophelia arrives and uses her Mystic Eye to undo its effects, but not the severe damage done to Brynhildr’s Spiritual Core. Despite the risks, Brynhildr reactivates the rune. Her determination to kill Sigurd negates Ophelia’s second attempt to use her Mystic Eye on her since it doesn’t work on singular possibilities. She then uses Brynhildr Romantia to kill Sigurd, but it doesn’t kill him. He reveals he isn’t Sigurd and attacks the group. Brynhildr destroys his Spiritual Core, but he still isn’t dead. He reveals he was waiting for someone capable of piercing Sigurd’s Spiritual Core, as the Command Spells forbid suicide. Ophelia tries to use her Mystic Eye to undo his defeat, but it doesn’t work. With the destruction of Sigurd’s Spiritual Core, the false sun meant to seal Surtr away breaks. Mash and Napoleon try to fight Surtr when he kidnaps Ophelia, with Sigurd using Bölverk Gram to repel Surtr's flames.[16] After Surtr leaves, Ortlinde reveals she used a rune to maintain Sigurd's body, assisted by Ophelia using her Mystic Eye on him earlier. Sigurd heals Brynhildr. Skadi reveals she protected Sigurd from Brynhilr's death blow, and eveyone from Surtr.[17]

Inside her throne room, Skadi reveals giants are attacking the villages, as her masks meant to pacify them ceased to function with Surtr free. After she explain explains the Lostbelt's origins, Fantasy Tree Seeds suddenly crash down afterwards. Skadi commands them to die, but to her shock, it is ineffective. Sitonai arrives and reveals Skadi’s connection to Sombrero has been severed. After Sitonai destroys the Seeds, the group suspects Surtr is the new Lostbelt King. Skadi then reveals Sombrero is to the north, camouflaged by her magical snow. After she agrees to help, the group return to the Shadow Border in pursuit of Surtr.[17]

Napoleon disappearing after launching his overloaded Noble Phantasm at Surtr.

As the others try to protect Village 23 from Surt, Napoleon overloads his Noble Phantasm deal a heavy blow to the fire giant at the cost of his life. As he disappears, he tells Ophelia she is why he was summoned in the first place. Then, as the last act of his materialization, he removes Fafnir's curse that Surtr inflicted Ophelia with. This final act of his inspires Ophelia to fight agaisnt Surtr.[5]

Abilities[]

Napoleon is a relatively modern Heroic Spirit. Thus, although he never wielded a cannon in life, when manifesting as a Servant, he's turned into a caricature of his real self, carrying a large cannon as his main weapon.[10] In the Norse Lostbelt, he materialized with a elevated Spirit Origin that possesses more power than it usually would.[7] The combined efforts of Mash and him are able to match "Sigurd", who ends up asking Ophelia Phamrsolone to remove one of his limiters. Despite forcing a Spirit Origin ascension and Ophelia using her Mystic Eye on Mash, they prove to be more of a challenge than Saber had thought. However, "Sigurd" claims that they'd need to be a lot stronger in order to kill him. Scáthach-Skadi is also able to freeze him in place with one Primordial Rune, stopping him from moving a single finger. However, he's able to momentarily move and shield Ritsuka Fujimaru from Caenis thanks to an adrenaline rush.[7]

Although his Magical Energy is not unlimited, he's able to fire consecutively many large bombardments with his cannon, killing several mass-produced Valkyries with each shot, without running out of mana and forcing them to retreat.[9] Despite his ranged attacks being very powerful, they prove insufficient to destroy Thrúd's Divine Iron shield, which was forged by Odin himself. Caenis is also able to block his blasts with just one hand without feeling any pain.[7]

After making a contract with Ritsuka, Napoleon's Spirit Origin takes better shape, allowing him to manifest his second stage.[11] Despite now possessing an overbearing Spirit Origin,[15] he claims to still be weaker than "Sigurd" on his ascended state, at least when he's not using any of his trump cards.[12] However, the combined efforts of Brynhildr, Mash and him finally managed to overpower Ortlinda and "Sigurd", despite him having unlocked his full capabilities in the form of his final ascension. Every thrust of her spear, every cannon shot, every shield bash wore him down bit by bit, until Bryhinldr finally managed to pierce his armor, tearing through his flesh, shattering his bones, and cutting his Spirit Core in two.[6]

Napoleon also boasts a keen eye which allowed him to discern from a glance the true nature of Thrúd's shield.[7] However, even he is not able to accurately measure Skadi's magical energy.[11]

Skills[]

Class Skills[]

  • Independent Action (C Rank): The ability to act independently for a while even without a supply of mana from the Master. At rank C, it is possible to remain in the world for a day after losing one's Master.[3]
  • Magic Resistance (C Rank): Cancels spells with a chant below two verses. Unable to defend against large-scale magecraft like greater magecraft and Greater Rituals.[3] As an Archer, Napoleon should be resistant to weaker forms of magecraft, such as those intended to interfere with the target's sight. However, Brynhildr is able to cast an illusion on him thanks to one of the Primordial Runes bestowed upon her by Odin himself. Being a power of the Age of Gods, just a tiny fraction of their power is enough to affect Napoleon.[14]

Personal Skills[]

  • Firepower Support (Cannon) (B+ Rank): A powerful ranged attack that is used to support tactical operations. In Napoleon's case, this attack is used in the form of a bombardment. Essentially a compound skill that comes included with the effects of the Tactics skill.[1][3]
  • Light of Possibility (B Rank): A skill similar to Pioneer of the Stars and also closely resembles Innocent Monster. The fact that Napoleon had accomplished his own feats by himself and the fact his legends had no involvement - all of them were taken as the idol representation of the Heroic Spirit Napoleon who behaves as an embodiment of "expectations" and "possibilities". "Well, I was supposed to say that." The Light of Possibilities, alike as a rainbow. Enemies who meet him will witness a rainbow traveling across the skies.[1][3]
  • Imperial Privilege (B Rank): As Napoleon was the first emperor of France and Emperor of the French, he possesses Imperial Privilege (though it is basically not used in Fate/Grand Order).[1][3]

Noble Phantasm[]

Napoleon's Noble Phantasm is Arc de Triomphe de l'Étoile. Bombardment type Noble Phantasm sublimated the tale of the Great Sphinx of Giza’s bombardment. Its outward appearance is that of a transforming, one-handed cannon. Due to the story of the bombardment that 'destroyed the Sphinx', it is especially effective against Mystery.[1]

He remarks regrettably that his Grande ArméeWP is not summoned with him as a Noble Phantasm, hinting that he could have them under another Class.[18]

Development[]

Creation and Conception[]

Napoleon Bonaparte was designed by Ryota-H in Fate/Grand Order. His scenario writer is Hikaru Sakurai in Fate/Grand Order

Comment from Illustrator[]

"I have been contacted about a dandy and coolly heroic Napoleon. At first, the cannon's size was less than half of the current one's, but, saying "Let's make the cannon transform, to emphasize the silhouette even more!", it turned into this. By the way, it was Takeuchi-san who removed the buttons on his chest in the first ascension, but seeing everyone's reactions, I think it was a wonderful decision after all. Not showing off his muscles would be a waste, right!" (Ryota-H)[3]
