New Age (新世代(ニューエイジ), Shin Sedai(Nyū Eiji)?) Magi, also called New Agers, are members of the Clock Tower recognized by their lack of historied families, usually traced back a century or so at best,[1] looked down upon by the aristocratic Magi.[1][2][3][4][5]

Characteristics[]

New Agers commonly shun the outlook of traditional Magi that only those with long bloodlines are able to advance. Seeking out alternative means of advancement, they may instead seek new ways through the use of modern science or the mass media.[6] For New Agers, Lord El-Melloi II is a figure of inspiration[7][8] and considered a leader.[1] For the El-Melloi Classroom in which he teaches, and where New Agers come in droves,[3] they are said to be its "star of hope."[9] Svin Glascheit and Flat Escardos are considered to be the "real vanguard" when it comes to the advancement of the New Agers.[10]

Discussing New Agers among the aristocrats is considered a topic not worthy of consideration,[7] with many Lords seeing them as nothing more than an easily controlled workforce[11] and drudges turning the gears of the Clock Tower's economy.[1] However, because of the decline of Magecraft, Magi are forced to start incorporating the New Agers who they used to dismiss into their organizations, a compromise which led to the creation of the Department of Modern Magecraft Theory, where New Agers can place their hopes.[12] The members of the Democratic Faction see more value in New Agers taking positions of power among the traditionally aristocratically controlled Clock Tower[13] and indeed has swallowed up all the Magi of the New Age.[14] However, they accept New Agers not out of kindness, but because there aren't enough Magi in the modern world to provide them with human labor.[15]

Touko Aozaki believes that even New Agers can achieve good results and rise to the top if they have a large amounts of artifacts such as from exploring the Spiritual Tomb of Albion,[16] which used to be the only means for New Agers to make a name for themselves before the arrival of Heartless and the rise of the Department of Modern Magecraft Theory.[17] Because of the influx of New Agers to the Department of Modern Magecraft Theory, many see the El-Melloi faction as leaning towards the Democratic Faction, despite being part of the Aristocratic Faction.[3]

Youthful Magi with the backing of powerful lineages are not considered among the New Agers.[2]
