Otama first meet Ritsuka and Miyamoto Musashi when they come to Toke Castle town. She quickly deduces that they are from out-of-town like her. Ritsuka calls her Tamamo-no-Mae, but Otama says they’re mistaken, though finds it interesting to know she resembles her. Then, assuming they’re rich based on their outfit, she invites Ritsuka to her establishment. She explains to Onui that hers is a place for adults where they can eat and drink and be entertained; a little slice of paradise amid a world of suffering. She and Kiyohime get into a violent argument over Ritsuka that Musashi is forced to break up. Afterwards, she returns to her inn hoping Ritsuka will visit sometime.[1]
A short time later, Otama allows Ritsuka and Musashi to borrow her bed for the unconscious Fuuma Kotarou when they barged into her inn. Ritsuka confirms they will spend the night. Otama allows it on the promise they’ll stay until Kotarou has recovered.[1]
A couple of days later, though, Senji Muramasa comes to Otama’s inn to retrieve Onui and Tasuke. Otama joins him in his reprimanding of Ritsuka’s party, saying they didn’t leave when they said they would, and treated her room like they owned it. She grants though that she thought their company would help ease her loneliness.[2]
When Toke Castle becomes Onriedo Castle, Otama witnesses Yagyuu Munenori and his samurai slay the monsters long enough for most of the survivors to escape. She then helped evacuate the children and elderly who were left behind. The evacuation is still under way when Ritsuka’s party arrives. Otama explains to them what has happened in the hour since the carnage began. She asks them if they know where Kiyohime is, recalling her servants fled from the castle in terror, and sought refuge at the town’s outskirts. The group leave the children in her while they head for Onriedo Castle.[3]
The next day, Otama cancels her original plan to return to Edo to help clean up. However, she doesn’t know where she can ply her trade now that her inn is ruined. Kiyohime suggests setting up an emergency meal station for the laborers and builders who will be rebuilding Toke Castle. Otama is wary of the suggestions, then asks Ritsuka where Musashi and Muramasa are now.[4]
