Profile[]
Background[]
Ptolemy is one of the generals of Alexander the Great who became the ruler of Egypt following Alexander's death. Ptolemy founded the Ptolemaic dynasty which ruled Egypt for 275 years, until the death of his descendant Cleopatra. This is an older version of Ptolemy from when he was the ruler of Egypt, in contrast to the younger version who is Ptolemy when he was a soldier under Alexander the Great. He did not gain the epithet "Soter" until several years after Iskandar's death.
Ptolemy was born with an innate ability similar to Atlas alchemists' Memory Partition. According to legend, Ptolemy would be able to thoroughly analyze others with only a short exchange. This talent would help beckon similarly powered scholars and establish his glorious academic institute (the MouseionWP), and, in this setting, said superhuman abilities would serve as its basis. As a result of his similar abilities, he came in contact with Atlas.[1]
During the Wars of the DiadochiWP where Iskandar's generals fought over his territory after his death, the enemy that Ptolemy most wanted to avoid was Eumenes.[2]
Ptolemy made a deal with Atlas which led to his heart being the security key to a second, magical Library of Alexandria. While the public Library of Alexandria contained worldly knowledge, the second one held secret Magecraft knowledge that could not go public.[3] Ptolemy participated in Project Ergo to revive Alexander IV, Iskandar's son. Alexander always had a skill with languages but was never allowed to read so that he could be a puppet king, so Ptolemy wanted to make a place where he could read as much as he always wanted, which was the true purpose of the Library of Alexandria. The reason Ptolemy participated in the Ergo project was so that the library could have a reader.[4] To create a Thaumaturgical Foundation that could enable the project, Ptolemy had his priests spread the tale that Iskandar was a son of Zeus and a son of Ra, establishing a syncretic Hellenistic faith centered around Iskandar. This combined with uniting all legends and wisdom in the Library of Alexandria created a Thaumaturgical Foundation that facilitates the mixing of Gods of different cultures, allowing for the mixing of Gods in Project Ergo.[5]
Appearance[]
Ptolemy carries a book that looks more like a computer screen.[4]
Personality[]
The old Ptolemy is is a wizened king who established the Ptolemaic dynasty. While prone to make those around him nervous, including his Master, he will quickly establish himself as an exceptionally reliable ally.[1] Despite his loyalty to Iskandar, Ptolemy was strangely disheartened to learn that his "dumb brat" was recorded as one of the greatest kings in history.[2]
Despite the stark contrast of appearances, the young and old Ptolemys are of the same mindsets. It is because of this that the Servant Ptolemy was constructed with his old and young forms simultaneously.[1]
He bases things off of asking himself "In what way, or how" something can be utilized. Ptolemy, thinking young while old and old while young, is astounding at deeply examining things and events from a plethora of perspectives. If he decides the Chaldean Master's actions have merit for the world, his young and old selves will easily cooperate. On the other hand, should that be lost, and his Master firmly refuses to ever change their mind, Ptolemy will unwaveringly deliver punishment, no matter how deep a bond they share. Just as he had to do during the Wars of the Diadochi against his companions.[1]
Relationships[]
- Iskandar
- "Aah, the conquering king! You've nearly doubled in size, and can easily see my old form eye to eye. I had a hundred different things I wished to ask should we meet again, but I have forgotten them in time...apologies. But, if you have a moment, would you care to discuss the Iliad with me?"[6]
- Alexander
- "Chaldea is certainly a place of many dreams. How else would the youngling form of the conquering king ask to see the library of Alexandria?"[6]
- Hephaestion Mnemosyne
- "At last...we meet. I have no defenses for the Wars of the Diadochi. And as the eventual victor, I shall not ignore my parts in it. But, before that, would you tell me of your journey? You, the Servant called "Faker"."[6]
- Darius III
- "Darius. While you may not remember me, just as Alexander followed you as pharaoh, I followed him. All I have to say is that I always knew to love those lands as you once did."[6]
- Cleopatra
- "Unbelievable...the queen who attended my gasping dynasty! She has been through struggles. But she has earned her pride, for she did what she had to."[6]
- Zhuge Liang
- "El Melloi II? Yes, I know of him. The ones from my records in the library, not the one present here. Hmm. As Iskandar's newest vassal, do you think he would care to chat over some drinks with me?"[6]
- Sima Yi
- "Oh, the successor of the Clock Tower. Just as described in my library. Even now, she follows an adverse path alongside her elder brother."[6]
- Gray
- "Well, if it isn't Ms. Gray. That talking box of yours is certainly something. Perhaps I could make use of it for my libr...oh. Come now, won't you at least hear me out before running off?"[6]
Role[]
The Adventures of Lord El-Melloi II[]
Ptolemy's heart, which serves as the key to the second underwater Library of Alexandria, was stolen from his mummy. This prevented anyone from being able to access the library's contents. After this incident Latio Crudelis Hiram activated a mechanical bird which serves as Ptolemy's spare body, allowing his mind to communicate with people.[3] Similar to how Add's personality is a copy of Sir Kay, the bird is a copy of Ptolemy's mind. It replicates what Ptolemy would say with 99% accuracy.[7]
Ptolemy is later briefly summoned as a Servant by Sion Eltnam Sokaris and Ergo, using the mechanical bird as a catalyst and Ergo's gods as the equivalent of the Holy Grail. Ptolemy uses his Noble Phantasm to stop Latio from using Ergo's gods to power a supercomputer, and then seals the Library of Alexandria, shutting it off from intruders for hundreds of years. He gives an information crystal to Ergo with all of the library's knowledge about Project Ergo on it.[4]

Skills[]
Class Skills[]
- Magic Resistance (B Rank)
- Independent Action (A Rank)
- Territory Creation (A+ Rank)
- Saint Graph Data Preservation (A Rank)
Personal Skills[]
- Savior's Charisma (A Rank): A unique form of Charisma granted for Ptolemy I having the title of Soter (savior). In comparison to the bloodied front half of his life, his latter half was a time spent on a compassionate reign.[1]
- Memory Partition (King) (A Rank): A skill superficially similar to the Memory Partition of Atlas, but Ptolemy was born with it innately while for Atlas alchemists it is a learned ability. Due to not necessarily requiring Mystery, it is best compared to superhuman phenomenon like Psychic powers.[1]
- Reach Towards Wisdom (EX Rank): Due to being able to access the Library of Alexandria with his Noble Phantasm Bibliotheca Basileus, he can obtain, and also change, the information saved to his own Saint Graph. This makes it possible for Ptolemy to recognize the suitable form and skills required to counter any enemy.[1]
Noble Phantasm[]
The old Ptolemy's Noble Phantasm is Bibliotheca Basileus. The Throne of Heroes recorded Ptolemy and the Library of Alexandria as one entity, and this Noble Phantasm is the manifestation of them being one and the same. He has access to all of the library's knowledge and mechanisms.[4]
Ptolemy can combine his old and young Noble Phantasms into a third Noble Phantasm, Soter. His library amplifies the light of his mirror, and both are turned into Broken Phantasms to multiply the attack further. In doing so, he also burns out his Spiritual Core and dies.[8]
Development[]
Creation and Conception[]
Old Ptolemy was designed by Shidzuki Morii and illustrated by Mineji Sakamoto in The Adventures of Lord El-Melloi II.[9] He was illustrated by Shidzuki Morii in Fate/Grand Order.
