Rider (ライダー, Raidā?) is a Rider-class Servant able to be summoned by Ritsuka Fujimaru in the Grand Orders of Fate/Grand Order.

Profile

Identity

Rider's True Name is Marie AntoinetteWP (マリー・アントワネットWP, Marī Antowanetto?), the Queen of France of the 18th Century whose genealogy is related to the House of HabsburgWP. The queen consort of Louis XVIWP. An ephemeral lady. Born between Holy Roman Emperor Francis IWP, a person originating from the House of LorraineWP as its Duke, and Maria TheresaWP, who is a descendant of the great aristocratic German household, the House of Habsburg, Marie was born and raised as an existence that symbolizes the "rule of nobility" of the European world, and during a chaotic period of human history where the right of monarchy was no longer absolute, she lost her life in a changing worldWP.[1][2]

History

Loved as a symbol of royal authority, being blessed while living—Destested as a symbol of royal authority, shown contempt as she ended up dead. Protruding eyes of the nobility, political marriage, living the royal court life, and then, revolution and execution. It is possible to say that Marie's way of life and manner of death is the embodiment of royal authority as an evident "idol".[1]

Although a target of hatred by many people before, during and after the Age of RevolutionWP, Marie's reputation has been restored in modern France; during famines, she reduced court expenses to make donations, personally demanded for the nobility to provide support to the people and such—it has thus being confirmed that she was a woman that thought of the people.[1][2]

There was a tragedy. Still————

Marie will never wish to the Holy Grail, for the erasure of her tragedy. She will only fulfill her own role. In other words, radiance to the sky. Blessings to the earth.

————Happiness to the people.[2]

Appearance

Marie is endowed with the greatest body and good looks as the result of her being born so as to become a beautiful monarch that will be loved. Her attire is based on the concept of an "Idol Queen".[1]

During the Moon Festival event, Marie commented that in life, no matter how much food she ate, all the food would go to her breasts, making that the more she ate, the bustier she would get. d'Eon then confirmed it and stated through that, her Majesty would grow to have one of the finest bodies in France.[3]

Personality

An image (idol) from birth. Soothing the masses with a smile, earning adoration with a gaze.[2] Marie was born to be loved, and this is not a theory, but her actually feeling this as an instinct. Finding joy on and accepting the fact that she is an image, she is set on conducting herself just as it is expected of her.[1][2] Such mentality is already close to some sort of goddess.[2]

Marie never hates the people. As she was born to be loved, she therefore loves the people. If the people deem her to be unnecessary, and even if they shout at her, capture her, and kill her, she will smile at them even at the moment of her death. However, her mentality as a Servant have fundamentally stopped at "the moment she married Louis XVI, visited France as its queen, and was loved and blessed by the many citizens", and she does not easily display her aspect as the queen of a tragedy. (It cannot be concluded that she has no memories after the aforementioned moment, but the stage of her character and mentality is simply at "that time".)[1]

Honest. Spontaneous. Marie will speak whatever she thought of. She will say the things she likes are what she likes, and the things she dislikes are what she dislikes.[1]

Marie loves baths.[2] Similar to and influenced by her mother, Maria Theresa, she awfully loves being clean.[1][2] That's because, the perfumes she uses aren't that strong (for her, the light ones that are similar to herbs and flowers are good).[1]

Marie is a spendthrift. She wastes money on one thing or another as she pleases, and she does not understand even herself about this habit.[1]

As the bond with the protagonist (Master) deepens, it appears that she will display the aspect of her tragic side. It is very evident that she is "the very idol that continues to scatter love, yet whose body and mind are scarred." And yet, she still smiles beautifully. Never, will Marie desire for the erasure of the tragedy.[1]

Relationships

Amadeus
Around the time when she was seven years old, on the occasion of a six-year-old genius, who was invited as a performing musician to the palace of Vienna, falling down, she kindly extended her hand to him. As a matter of fact, this genius boy would be later known as Amadeus Mozart, and he proposed marriage to the beautiful Marie (who at that time had the name Maria). The answer at that time was...[1]
Even now where she became a Heroic Spirit, this event that was enjoyable and sincere to her is said to be recognized as "love". That is, nothing about this "love" has changed whatsoever from when she felt it around that very youthful time.[1]
Charles-Henri Sanson
The executioner who hoisted the guillotine for Marie. During her lifetime, he is the last companion who raised his voice to her during her final moments. Just before her execution, Marie expressed her words of apology regarding her stepping on Sanson's shoes.[1]
Chevalier d'Eon
She completely recognizes d'Eon as "female". Furthermore, she deeply respects her as a person who endeavored in diplomacy and secret missions while she was a woman. Marie had gave a dress to d'Eon before in life. For Marie, she thinks about going out with d'Eon as a fellow friend and not as master and servant.[1]

Role

Fate/Grand Order

Orleans: Wicked Dragon Hundred Years' War

Marie appears as an ally to Ritsuka Fujimaru and Mash Kyrielight. When Ritsuka, Mash and Jeanne are being overwhelmed by Jeanne Alter's Servants in La Charite, she, along with Mozart, suddenly arrives to help the group escape.

After the group set up camp in a forest, Marie and Mozart introduce themselves as stray Servants, with her being infatuated with Jeanne. She decides to join Ritsuka's group to combat Jeanne Alter, believing it to be the reason why she and Mozart were summoned. Marie then wonders if Berserk-Saber is actually Chevalier d'Eon, which leads to a discussion about Jeanne Alter's Servants having Mad Enhancement regardless of their backgrounds. After Jeanne theorizes that the Holy Grail summoned her and Mozart to combat the reversal of causality of the Holy Grail having a holder before the Holy Grail War even began, Marie becomes excited at the prospect of meeting new people. Later that night, she and the others fight and kill Saint Martha, who tells them to go to Lyon where they'll find a dragon slayer who can slay Jeanne Alter's dragons.

The next day, Marie gathers intel about Lyon from a nearby town while the others wait outside since Jeanne is currently feared as the "Dragon Witch". She reports that Lyon was destroyed a while ago, yet despite that, they decided to go to the town to search for the dragon slayer who once served as the town's protector. While searching the town, the group eventually encounter and kill the Phantom of the Opera. Romani then warns them of a dragon and three Servants coming towards them, but Marie and Mozart stand to fight while the others go rescue the dragon slayer from the town's castle. After the others rescue the dragon slayer, Siegfried, Marie and the others encounter Jeanne Alter and her dragon, Fafnir, who is then commanded to burn them all. But Marie and the others are protected from the dragon's flames by Jeanne and Mash, before they then escape when Siegfried's Balmung causes Fafnir to retreat. While escaping, they encounter a French army being attacked by wyverns, and there, she encounters her executioner, Sanson, who she repels him with Mash and Mozart's help. After the group kills Lancelot while Carmilla and Sanson escaped, she asks Jeanne if she wishes to answer Gilles before they leave, but Jeanne decides not to do so as to not endanger his position.

Arriving at an abandoned fort, Marie heals Siegfried of his wounds, but she and the others discover that he'd been cursed. Jeanne is unable to remove the curses due to their multiplicity, so Marie and the others split up to search for a Saint to help remove the curses. Traveling with Jeanne, Marie tells her that if she were her, she would probably accept Jeanne Alter's scornful words, but she tells Jeanne to reject such words. Eventually reaching a town under protection of Georgios, Jeanne and Marie try to recruit him, but he replies that he cannot leave until the town's citizens are evacuated. When Jeanne Alter comes to attack the town, Marie stays behind to protect the town while Jeanne and Georgios escape.

As they escape, Marie encounters Sanson, who has come to execute her once again, but Marie defeats him another time. After he is defeated, Sanson expresses his disbelief at his own self being defeated after killing so many. But Marie replies that he became weaker because he became more proficient as a killer, but all the while becoming weaker as an executioner, as a savior of criminals. Sanson denies her claims, saying that he honed his skill so as to give her a better execution so she would forgive him. Marie, however, reveals that she bears no grudge against him; before Sanson could reply, he disappears when Jeanne Alter arrives. After greeting Jeanne Alter, Marie activates her Noble Phantasm, Crystal Palace. Saying goodbye to Jeanne, Marie fights Jeanne Alter, but she perishes in said battle.

Do Moon Goddesses Dream of Dango?

Together with Charles-Henri Sanson and Chevalier d'Eon, Marie had stolen a load of dumplings that were originally transported to the Singularity by Artemis. However, they had to give most of the dumplings to Saint Martha, Georgios, and Kojiro as a sign of friendship.

Later, while camping out in a forest, Marie eats the dumplings with Sanson and d'Eon, who she feeds the dumplings to. Sanson questions the morality of them taking all three tons, but Marie reprimands him for being too modest, asking where his boldness when he prepared the guillotine went. She then reveals, to Sanson's amazement, that all the food she eats goes to her breasts when he tells her that she is eating too many dumplings. Marie doesn't call it a medical marvel as Sanson does, but something that all girls have in common. However, Ritsuka, Mash and Artemis arrives in the forest, with Mash demanding that they surrender. Marie greets Ritsuka and Mash, but struggles to remember them and ends up fighting them with d'Eon and Sanson. After tthe group defeats them, Mozart appears to help the French Servants, with Marie happy to see him. Then after Ritsuka, Mash and their group defeat Mozart, d'Eon, and Sanson, Marie remembers who Ritsuka and Mash are and returns the dumplings to them. She then reveals that her group had given most of the dumplings they stole to another group as a sign of friendship. Marie admits that they couldn't possibly carry three tons worth of dumplings, and reveals that the other group had gone to pray near the waters of Marseille. She then wishes Ritsuka and Mash good fortune in their venture, giving Ritsuka a kiss goodbye.

Miss Almost Weekly Santa Alter

After Chevalier d'Eon bought back a French Royal family treasure from Julius Caesar, who is mistaken for Santa Claus, Marie reprimands them for accidentally selling it earlier. Later, she writes a letter to Santa saying that she wants a present that'll bring her two friends, who are always fighting, together. But when Santa Alter comes in response to the letter, Marie shoots her down with a cannon. However, when Santa Alter lands and speaks briefly with her and d'Eon before their fight, she realizes that Santa Alter isn't the same Santa Claus from before. After Santa Alter defeats them, Marie tells d'Eon what she had figured out before the fight, though she omitted that fact due to having fun in her fight with Santa Alter. She then tells d'Eon and Astolfo to line up after Santa Alter told them to do so to retrieve their presents, and she is then given a glass horse as her present. After Astolfo was tossed a Halloween pumpkin as his present, Marie ponders on what it means, but later figures out that it means that he won't reappear until next year's Halloween.

Salomon: The Grand Time Temple

Marie is amongst the "Orleans" Singularity Servants assisting Chaldea against the Demon Gods Pillars.[4]

Chaldea Summer Memories ~White Beach of Solace~

Marie Antoinette and several other of Ritsuka's Servants are accidentally rayshifted to a remote island where they're unable to contact Chaldea. As the group wonder where they are, she believes the island not to be France. The next day after, the group learn from a near dead Blackbeard (who was convinced earlier by Mary Read to observe the island) that their location is still unknown, and its nearly impossible to leave with a normal ship. Agreeing with Soothing White Beach|Artoria Pendragon's suggestion to leave the island to contact Chaldea, the group decide to build a ship capable of leaving the island. After slaying monsters, the group's Spirit Origins are altered by Scáthach to give them swimsuits in order to accommodate with their current environment. After more monsters are slain, the group go to gather materials for Scáthach to build their escape ship while also building other facilities.

Later, the group discuss what their first task of island life should be when a storms suddenly rolls in. They enter a small cave spotted by Mordred to escape the rain, but they run out due to a massive swarm of bugs. Outside the cave, the group decide they need to build a cabin to take shelter in. After that is built, the group build a water supply to preserve any fresh water they collect. Later, Marie goes fishing with Ritsuka, Mash Kyrielight, Tamamo-no-Mae, and Cú Chulainn at his fishing spot. As they continue fishing, she repeatedly lets go of the fish she caught out of sympathy for them. Marie catches something bigger than her usual catches, and with the others' help, is able to reel it in. Unfortunately, it turns out to be a monster which is promptly slain by the group.

Tired of barbecue, the group decide to build a proper cooking facility. Marie requests they build a pizza oven out of her desire to eat pizza after seeing Francis Drake, Gaius Julius Caesar, and others eating it at Chaldea. She always wanted to try pizza, but she was always stopped by Charles-Henri Sanson and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. If the pizza oven is built, Marie is intrigued by variations of pizza that Ritsuka mentions. She wonders if Sanson and others were being mean to her by preventing her from eating it. Marie then agrees with Mash that Sanson and other don't know what pizza tastes like as she believes they don't want to get their hands greasy. She then asks they hold a pizza party for Sanson and Mozart when they return to Chaldea. Next, the group build a bathing facility. Afterwards, they cultivate a vegetable field for a stable food supply. Later, the group build a ranch to raise livestock.

Later, Marie, Artoria, Kiyohime, and Mordred learn from from Scáthach that their crops were destroyed by a beast as determined by Fionn mac Cumhaill's use of Fintan Finegas. Unfortunately, they find Fionn and Diarmuid Ua Duibhne, who served as lookouts the previous night, fatally wounded. Fionn quickly dies, but Artoria is able to get Diarmuid to reveal their attacker to be a boar. When Artoria spots a boar piglet, Marie defends it from the group's allegations that it killed the Lancers and the destroyed the crops because it looks adorable. She is told however by Artoria that they they've no choice but to suspect it given the current evidence, and not to be fooled by appearances. Marie tries to feed the piglets some nuts, prompting Artoria to warn her of to be beware of a boar's charge. She continues to defend the piglet as the others want to kill it, believing it to be innocent since it hasn't ran off yet. After killing monsters that appeared, the group split up to search the island for the boar piglet that ran off earlier. Later that night, they reconvene at their crops joined by Tamamo, Martha, and Anne and Mary. Marie again defend the piglet's innocence when Martha also questions its ability to kill Fionn and Diarmuid. The group eventually find the boar piglet along two others defending the crops when a demon boar attacks them. Angered it attacked the piglet, Marie attacks the demon boar with the others following suit knowing it's the true culprit. After the demon boar is slain, Marie is apologized to by Artoria and Kiyohime for wrongly accusing the piglet, which she gladly accepts. She then thanks the boar piglets for trying to protect the crops against the demon boar despite being smaller than it. After Scáthach contracts the piglets to guard the crops, Marie gladly accepts the proposition. She then reprimands Artoria for saying to the piglet that it makes her hungry in her apology to it.

The next day, the group build a pathway to improve their efficiency in material gathering as Artoria suggested. Next, they decide to build an aqueduct to improve their efficiency in storing water, with Marie requesting a stone aqueduct. If the stone aqueduct is built, she admires how it looks like the Pont du GardWP. Afterwards, the group decide to build a bridge to make travelling easier for Ritsuka. Later, Marie is asked by Scáthach to join her party of her, Ritsuka, Mash, and Martha to investigate something the boar piglet. When near the location, she learns she was asked to come to stop the piglet from fleeing as it's their guide. Eventually the group discover a pool of poison the size of a manhole causing all plants in the area to wilt. After slaying the monsters that appeared, the pool is purified by Martha. The group then follow the boar piglet to even larger pool of poison, which was created by a demon boar bathing in the water. After killing the demon boar, Scáthach plants ash trees to clean the miasma as they grow when Martha's purification proves to be ineffective. Marie considers that act to be a form of giving back to the island, and taking back its future.

Chaldea Heat Odyssey ~Evolving Civilization~

Interlude

In her first interlude Queen of Lily and Emperor of Rose, Marie is summoned to Chaldea by Romani Archaman for the purpose of cheering Vive la France repeatedly with her. However, Marie begins to feel that their cheering would be better with more people, and asks Romani if they can go to a place with more energy and people. Romani suggests that they can go to Rome, saying that it should be safe without any enemy Servants there. After Rayshifting to Rome with Ritsuka and Mash, Marie is impressed with the city's architecture and the jovial energy of its citizens. She then takes notice of the palace, and proceeds to go towards it without Ritsuka and Mash, who goes after her. Inside of the palace, Marie is impressed by how elegant it looks yet notes that it is still strong and sturdy. After Romani expresses disappointment at not being able to Rayshift to 18th Century France, Marie takes notice of the throne, and goes to the throne room to look at it. In the throne room, she encounters Nero Claudius, who is somewhat confused by Marie's presence. After Nero asks her where she is from, Marie introduces herself to Nero, who introduces herself back. Marie then proceeds to ask Nero if she could sit on her throne, but Nero mistakes her request as a challenge for the throne. After the group defeats Nero in the ensuing fight, she tells Marie to sit on her throne later when no one is around, and invites the group to a banquet. Hearing Romani's disappointment that he can't join the banquet, Marie promises him that they'll bring back presents.

In her second interlude The Fragile Lily, Marie, Ritsuka and Mash encounter each other inside a dream of hers, which makes her ponder who is exactly dreaming. She then recognizes their current location as Tour du Temple, the place where she awaited her execution, and her perceived mental landscape. After wondering if the others perceive the location as different or the same, Marie tells Ritsuka and Mash that they need to leave her prison and return to the real world. However, the prison is turned into a labyrinth due to Marie's doubts that she can escape on her own as the prison represents her memories of sorrow and misery. But her connection with Ritsuka encourages her that she can find a way to the exit. After defeating a group of ghosts, Marie expresses that she never fell into despair while imprisoned, and further expresses her belief that France is eternal even if the royal family is dead and forgotten. However, after she states that France is eternal even if it changes, the group is confronted by another Marie, who says that Marie's words are just self-deception. "Marie" then proceeds to state that Marie in truth wants France, and its people who killed her family, to die. Confirming that both of them are real, Marie states that she is the one who never gave up while "Marie" is the one that did. However, "Marie" calls Marie fake, and calls herself the real Marie Antoinette, cursing France for her fate. But Marie rejects her other self, saying that she never stopped smiling no matter what fate befell her. After "Marie" further expresses her hatred for France and the world at large, the group proceeds to fight her. After the group defeats "Marie", Marie is thankful that she now has nothing to hide from Ritsuka and Mash, and then proceeds to lead them to the exit. Before leading them though, she asks Ritsuka and Mash to not tell Romani or Cath Palug about the dream if they still remember it, not wanting them to see her not smiling.

Abilities

Marie's Noble Phantasms are Guillotine Breaker and Crystal Palace.

If it's simple Magecraft, Marie's Magic Resistance Skill can nullify it.[1]

Marie - who is a heavenly-sent child of the royalty conferred by God - can freely handle all vehicles and beasts with her Riding Skill, starting from the white horse that symbolizes the French royal family. However, the Dragon Kind cannot be mounted.[1]

Marie's general weapon is her singing voice due to her Alluring Nightingale (魅惑の美声, Miwaku no Bisei?) Skill.[1] A mesmerizing-kind of Skill possessed by those with a beautiful natural voice; it is also a declaration of the exercise of power by the royalty.[1][2] It works as a charm magecraft-like effect towards those of the user's opposite sex, but evasion is possible by means of a Magic Resistance Skill. Even without Magic Resistance, one can abate it to some extent so long he or she maintains a will to resist.[1] For Marie, who has materialized as a symbolic existence, she can guide magical damage towards the opponents of the royalty with just a single singing voice.[2]

Grace of God (神の恩寵, Kami no Onchō?) is a Skill that denotes the beauty of royalty.[1][2] Marie was born to be a beautiful monarch, endowed with the greatest body and good looks.[1]

Princess of Loveliness (麗しの姫君, Uruwashi no Himegimi?) is a Skill representing one's charismatic nature in regards not to leadership, but the ability to charm the people around oneself. For Marie, who possesses an A Rank in this Skill, a knightly individual that protects her is pulled towards her just by existing.[1][2]

Forms and Alternate Versions

Swimsuit

Whether at the royal palace or at the beach, a queen consort is a queen consort. She is Marie Antoinette as she still is, even if her Saint Graph has been tinkered with by Scathach. Nevertheless, she is somewhat in high spirits, and comparing with her materialization as a Rider, the number of times she smiles has increased by a tiny bit.[6][5] Unnoticed goes the crab that got on her head (only in her first stage Ascension).[5]

Personality

The same Marie Antoinette as always. Given that it is the resort, she is slightly in high spirits. She feels that royalty is at home in a summer resort.[5] Having successfully materialized in a swimsuit, she does not really care about the large amount of skin exposure. Marie Antoinette continues to sparkle beautifully, pleasantly, and gorgeously. Concerning her appearance, because she is rather unmindful of it, it may not be known that in the eyes of others, she comes out all the more boldly.[6][5]

Marie's motivations and attitude towards the Master are, basically, the same as usual.[5] Spending every summer day with Marie Antoinette seems to be, genuinely, letting one have a dream of a real celebrity vacation. Since it is a dream, one will wake up someday, but memories of it will undoubtedly be left behind.[6][5]

Relationships

Amadeus

"Goodness gracious! As I expected, you’re looking quite pale. Your face has become pure white. Let’s take a break somewhere. Ok?"

"W-WhatーーーMy third stage Ascension is dangerous? Why would you say that?"[5]

Charles-Henri Sanson

"Ah, Sanson. Hey, please look. Miss Scathach prepared a swimsuit for me… Huh? Sanson? Why aren’t you looking at me?"[5]

Chevalier d’Eon

"Come on, you should enjoy your vacation too! Hehehe. Look here, I chose some clothes and swimsuits that seems to suit you nicely. Oh! That’s right, it might also be a good idea to walk to the merchant shop and find something together!"[5]

Scáthach

"Merci mille fois. For the first time in a while, I relish in the mood for a vacation."[5]

Abilities

Marie uses a beach ball in combat. Or more precisely, there is a possibility that Marie herself is merely playing with a ball at the beach, all while not being aware of the battle.[6][5]

A charismatic nature not for leadership, but to bring and attract to her the people in her surroundings at the sea. Due to a composite effect with the Beach Flower Skill, Marie is revered and protected as a princess of the beach simply by existing as usual.[6][5]

… I want you to take a good look. Just now, those who protected Marie from the enemies did not consist of only a musician, an executioner and a knight of white lilies whom disguised their appearances and happened to pass by coincidentally…[6][5]

Development

Creation and Conception

Ginka is the character illustrator for Marie Antoinette.[1][2][6][5] Hikaru Sakurai is the scenario writer for her character.[1][5]

Marie's concept is an "Idol Queen". An idol who flew down to 18th Century France. Or, a glass angel (as an embodiment and symbol of a pure and fleeting thing, and not as a religious motif).[1]

Comment from Illustrator

"It was fun because I was able to even design 2 swimsuits and 3 kinds of one-pieces. At first, I was wandering off course, acting quite rashly and recklessly with something like deciding on a blue one-piece as I was too conscious about the resort feeling, but with Mr. Takeuchi’s safe words of advice, I did a white dress! I’m safe!! Given that the Noble Phantasm was already in the shape of a raid boss at the occasion of its ordering, I presented it to them in high spirits. I even extended her hair within the short moment when they weren’t looking…"[5] (Swimsuit Ver.)
